5 out of 5 stars Just As I Remember.......2007-09-08

If you're into the videos that were aired on MTV, you know back when they actually showed (music) videos that rocked, you'll love this one. It's got all of 'em and a bunch more really cool footage. If you're a Twisted Sister fan, it's an absolute must! Rock on.

2 out of 5 stars Tipper Sister.......2007-08-24

Like every other SMF I had been waiting for years for a release like this. I read somewhere on the net that this would have the full unedited 4 songs from "The Tube". This unfortunately was not true and a lot of the appeal was lost to me. But of course I had to get it anyway. It's great to have these videos in such good quality but I would just like someone from Rhino or from the band to explain why the live show has been CENSORED and why is the "We're Not Gonna Take It" video EDITED? The absolute classic video, the reason why this band got so big is presented here TWICE. EDITED. Unforgivable. Have you guys given in to the PMRC??

5 out of 5 stars Twisted Sister Rocks.......2007-08-13

I was a huge fan of Twisted Sister in the 80's.I remember seeing the Stay Hungry concert on video and I thought it was awesome.I have always hoped that it would be eventually released on DVD but I didnt think that it ever would be.This is one DVD release that is long overdue.I havent seen some of those video clips for years.Watching those old video clips took me back years to my high school days. This is a great DVD with all the bands videos plus the 1984 Stay Hungry MTV concert. The only thing that I noticed about the live concert is that it has been censored. All the swearing has been cut from it for some reason most notably during S.M.F.Anyone who has seen the original VHS version will know what I am referring to.But still its a great DVD and a must have for any die hard Twisted Sister fan or for anyone who is maybe just discovering them for the first time.

3 out of 5 stars Gee not only Wal Mart does that.......2007-07-28

I just cracked this one open.I basically got it for The Price and You Can Stop Rock'n'roll.I wasn't disappointed at all with those. The quality was a lot better than the priginals and you simply never see the Price anywhere.Yes,the cover of the Stones 'It's Only Rock'n'Roll' was cool seeing Lemmy and Robbo was cool as can be.But the one that made me take out the disc and hate it was the live concert.I have seen it on vhs a few times so I knew where things went. But no,it's CENSORED that's fine if you have kids but there was no uncensored option.I thought only WalMart did stuff like that.Especially since I didn't get it there. If you have wee ones, fine. They don't need to here this. But I don't and I'd say a lot of fans don't.The swearing was part of it.Dee admittied that when he was with friends he cursed. He considerd the audience to be friends.Wann support censorship? But it.Don't wanna? I'm sorry to say it but avoid it.

4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect.......2007-07-27

It is great to have all these videos on DVD.I would have given it 5 stars but the concert is edited.I have the unedited version on dvd already so its no big deal. But they should mention that it is the edited version. The sound and picture qaulity are fantastic which is no suprise as Rhino always puts out top notch products.

With a tawdry plot and a short list of suspects, Twisted gives armchair detectives an easy chance to figure out whodunit. Critics roasted this pulpy potboiler, in which Ashley Judd (attempting to repeat the thriller success she had with Double Jeopardy and High Crimes) plays a San Francisco homicide detective who is her own prime suspect in an ongoing serial murder case, in which all of the victims are men she recently slept with. These one-night stands, and a problem with alcoholic blackouts, make Judd's wine-drinking character the loose cannon on the case, and her partner (Andy Garcia) and police commissioner mentor (Samuel L. Jackson) have their own reasons for wanting the case to close. Apparently nobody bothered to point out numerous weaknesses in Sarah Thorp's B-movie screenplay, and with no apparent interest in the proceedings, director Philip Kaufman (The Right Stuff) allows Judd to look silly, Garcia to overact, and the whole movie to unfold in murky darkness and dimly lit rooms. Kaufman, Judd, and her costars are capable of better. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars She is a good cop.......2007-08-14

but she likes to drink... Her father and mother had had violent deaths...
She has just arrived at the homicide department when guys she had met casually start to be murdered...A bit too graphic... Don't miss the extras!

4 out of 5 stars Though not a masterpiece, a movie worth watching.......2007-05-20

Twisted brings to the screen the story of a young policewoman, recently promoted to inspector, who finds herself investigating the murders of her former lovers, making her...the prime suspect.
Ashley Judd, Andy Garcia, Samuel Jackson, and the rest of the cast carry out their performances very well.
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, and the music are all good.
In a nutshell, it's probably not a movie you would want to add to your collection, but it will provide for an evening's entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars Twisted.......2007-01-15

Fue un regalo para mi esposa ya que me dijo que nunca se la habia alquilado y espero que le guste.

3 out of 5 stars Suspense , thriller kind of movie..........2007-01-04

The key to this movie, was the interaction between the trio
Samuel Jackson, Ashley Judd and Andy Garcia, the latter whom
the viewer can't really figure out, as a bad guy, good guy
throughout the movie, until the suspense is resolved towards
the end of the movie, doing a fine job.

Avoiding to spoil this thriller, clearly SJ does a fine acting
job, as does AJ, who seems significantly out of character in
this movie, playing an alcoholic, attitude-filled, gutsy police
detective, with a number of other flaws, such as ease with
which she moves from lover to lover. Within her own limits, Judd
demonstrates a very good, but not exceptional, acting performance.

For those, like myself, who enjoy movies who take you to another
time and space, for 1 hour and a half, this work is an acceptable
rental choice, if only to see the main actors playing characters
that are out of the ordinary, taking risks in terms of how far
they can remain credible playing difficult characters.

The downside to this movie,is perhaps the energy level, considering
the actors seem in most cases looking tired or worn out ...perhaps the
filming and on-location shots took a long time to prepare. This seems
to be the case for most of those in the movie, except for a few, such
as Camryn Manheim's character.

Perhaps to redeem herself from this shocking character, Judd is later
interviewed in the extra section of the DVD, on-set filming another
picture, Norma Jean, in a more charismatic manner.

2 out of 5 stars Do the Twisted.......2006-07-10

I think when many say they knew after 15 minutes who the killer was, they're actually saying they guessed who the killer was and just happened to be right.

Think about this for a moment: What was the motive? That was something I never figured out. The killer didn't have a motive. That's what threw me off. But I guess some would say a crazed killer doesn't need a motive. But come on! Even the deranged killer in 7even had a reason for killing. Even Norman Bates had a reason for killing.

It could be the reason was explained but I just missed it because the movie was so terrible. I don't know. I really don't want to have to watch the whole movie again to figure it out.

I know if you have a lot of high profile actors in secondary roles, one of them is the killer for sure; but you're thrown off by the fact that you have Andy Garcia, D.W. Moffett, and Sam L. Jackson. So all 3 are fair game.

What a rip off
the price is high the quality is low
I am not talking Rob Lowe
I am talking a bunch of films that stink
I would rather throw them in the drink
then waste the overpriced asking of this set
I don't even think I will donate it for the wagons headed for Tibet
Just buy them individually it will cost less
of course the zombies profess
it is so good!

Yeah, overpriced collection

3 out of 5 stars A mixed bag of horror films.......2007-07-29

Someone else has already said which films are in this set, so I will add detailed descriptions of each featured film:

From Beyond the Grave (1973) Peter Cushing - 4/5 - Cushing hosts this anthology of four tales that is pretty good if you are a fan of British style horror. The shortness of the four tales keeps things moving along nicely so that you don't get bored. What holds the stories together is that Cushing plays the owner of an antique shop whose customers meet supernaturally tragic fates if they try to wrong him.

Someone's Watching Me (1978) - Stars Lauren Hutton and David Birney, directed by John Carpenter - 4/5 - Lauren Hutton is a woman being stalked by a neighbor across from her apartment. He calls her, sends her gifts, and watches her through his telescope. When she can't get the police to take her seriously, she has to take on her tormenter herself along with her boyfriend and a woman that works at the same TV station as she. This is actually a well-done film that was made for TV. The features are:
Anamorphic Widescreen Presentation
English, French and Spanish Mono
English, French and Spanish subtitles
New Featurette "John Carpenter: Director Rising"

The Hand (1981) - stars Michael Caine, directed by Oliver Stone - 3/5 - The idea is simple enough. Jonathan Lonsdale is a comic book artist whose right hand is severed in a car accident. The hand takes on a life of its own and kills everyone who annoys or wrongs Jon. Although not great, good direction by Stone and good acting by Michael Caine as the tortured artist really save this one. It's not meant to be so much horror as a character study of Lonsdale, and on that level it works. The features are:
Anamorphic Widescreen Presentation
English and Spanish Dolby Surround
English, French and Spanish subtitles
Commentary by Oliver Stone
Theatrical Trailer

Eyes of a Stranger (1981) - Lauren Tewes and Jennifer Jason Leigh - 2/5 - This is your typical immediate post Jason/Michael Myers kind of slasher movie that was prevalent at the time. Tewes, of "Loveboat" fame, is a reporter on the trail of a neighbor that she believes is a serial killer. And of course, what would a 1980 era slasher film be without the helpless girl waiting to be a victim, Jason Leigh, the blind and deaf sister of Tewes. Not very interesting or thrilling at all except for the fact that this is Leigh's film debut. The features are:
Anamorphic Widescreen Presentation
English, French and Spanish Mono
English, French and Spanish subtitles
Theatrical Trailer

Deadly Friend (1986) stars Matthew Laborteaux (Little House on the Prairie) and Kristy Swanson (Buffy in the original BTVS movie) directed by Wes Craven - 2.5/5 - Laborteaux plays Paul, a new kid in a strange town whose only real friends are the girl next door, Samantha (Kristy Swanson), and a robot that he has built. When Samantha is murdered by her abusive father, Paul steals Samantha's body and implants his robot's microchips into her brain to bring her back to life. However she is merely reanimated rather than "alive" in the moral sense, and soon becomes out of control. I have to say it's not like any other Craven film I've seen, and it comes across more cheesy than anything else. It does have one extremely original thing going for it - death by basketball. What a hoot. The features are:
Anamorphic Widescreen Presentation
English, French and Spanish Mono
English, French and Spanish subtitles
Theatrical Trailer

Dr. Giggles (1992) - Holly Marie Combs (Charmed) and Glenn Quinn (Angel) - 2.5/5 - Larry Drake, the villain in "Darkman", plays the insane son of a mass-murdering doctor. Drake's character escapes from his confinement, sets up practice as a doctor in the town where his father was caught, and comes up with all kinds of inventive ways of killing his patients as a means of avenging his dad. The worst thing a horror film can be is boring, and it seems the film makers had this in the front of their minds because they are so busy juggling activity that the picture literally becomes cramped with action. Much could have been cut from the script and they would have had a better movie. The features are:
Anamorphic Widescreen Presentation
English Dolby Surround
English, French and Spanish subtitles

I didn't show any extra features for "From Beyond the Grave" because the Warner press release doesn't specifically mention any. The extra features on the whole package really just add up to the commentary by Oliver Stone on "The Hand" and the featurette about John Carpenter on "Someone's Watching Me". Because of the paucity of extra features in this set I just averaged my ratings of the individual movies in the set to get my final rating of three out of five stars.

1. Deadly Friend (Wes Craven)

4 out of 5 stars Great B horror flick.......2007-05-07

I enjoyed this movie just for the story alone.

Spoiler:
I liked the idea of the adopted child not knowing that there was a twin sister and the twin seeking revenge on the other.

The acting was great in this one as well as story. For those that appreciate the female nudity, there is plenty of it. To me, this was a well put together B horror flick and is highly recommended to anyone that loves B horror flicks.

4 out of 5 stars Too Sexy!!.......2006-10-14

If you like movies about sweet, sexy, totally insane females, then "Twisted Sisters" is definitely for you. The movie is about two sisters, Jennifer and Nora, who live completely opposite lifestyles. Jennifer has the marriage, career and stability; Nora, well, not so much.

Jennifer was, unknowingly, an adoptee. what Jennifer doesn't know is that she has a twin sister. This twin sister has found her and is out for revenge. Nora blames Jennifer for the hardships that she has encountered and now is her time to get even!! She starts to play out the role of Jennifer and begins to committ heinous crimes that Jennifer gets pinned for.

The movie has a surprise ending that I am not going to spoil here, but just know, if you like an erotic, chilling thriller, "Twisted Sisters" is the one for you. A really good horror/thriller.

Description

Biblical theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer was executed by the Nazis just days before the Allies defeated Germany in World War II. This gripping documentary narrated by Ed Asner captures the life, times, and thought of Bonhoeffer. Using rare archival footage, documents, and visits to original locations, we get an intimate portrait of a man whose life and writings grow in their influence and speak powerfully to issues of our own day some 50 years later.

How does a man of peace come to assist violence in combating unrestrained evil? What do you do when deep-seated patriotism for your nation compels you to oppose your fatherland and its demonic leader? What course do you take when your love for the Gospel conflicts with your tragically compromised church? What is the responsibility of a follower of God when others are being persecuted and sent to prison camps and gas chambers?

As shown in this two-hour program, Bonhoeffer confronted these and other issues with a searching Biblical faith and personal courage in a way that speaks to every generation.

This is a DVD that my husband wanted for his birthday. The movie stops playing about 20 minutes from the end, so he can't see the end of the movie. He has tried different DVD players with no results. This is the first time I have purchased movies this way. Can I get it replaced with one that works? I purchased new rather than used to avoid this type of problem.

5 out of 5 stars A informative and engaging documentary on the life, times, and thought of this man who was martyred for his beliefs.......2005-12-13

Biblical Theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer was executed by the Nazis just days before the Allies defeated Germany in World War II. "Hanged On A Twisted Cross" is a informative and engaging documentary on the life, times, and thought of this man who was martyred for his beliefs. Drawing upon archival footage, historical documents, and visits to original locations, "Hanged Upon A Twisted Cross" provides an intimate and insightful portrait of a man whose life and writings grew (and continue to grow) in their theological influence within the Christian community, and still powerfully speak to contemporary issues a half century after Bonhoeffer's death. Viewers will benefit from Bonhoeffer's views on how men of peace come to employ violence when combating unrestrained evil. What is to be done when deep-seated patriotism and their religion-based ethics compels Christians to oppose their fatherland and its demonic leader. The DVD format is thoroughly "user friendly". With a total running time of two hours, "Hanged On A Twisted Cross" is strongly recommended viewing and a welcome contribution to personal, seminary, and academic Christian Studies collections.

5 out of 5 stars A powerful and captivating "sermon".......2005-09-24

The secondary definition of the word "sermon" according to Merriam-Webster is "a speech on conduct or duty."

This 120 min. 29 little chapters documentary has the feel of a "sermon" and history lesson all wrapped in one.

The movie starts with the following prologue/opening credits: "dedicated to Him Who made this film possible." Not only this but also the sound of a classic church hymnal as background music sets the tone for a Christian religious movie. The narration that follows, is by no means boring or soporific, as the music and voice and images presented are very engaging and intellectually stimulating.

This documentary focuses solely on "The Life, Convictions and Martyrdom of" a man by the name Dietrich Bonhoeffer at the orders of no other than Adolf Hitler and his henchmen. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a pastor, theologian, university professor, anti-Nazi conspirator, and martyr who detected early on the evils of a new monster rising amidst his germanic countrymen (Adolf Hitler as Fuehrer, racism as means of national liberation, the deification of state authority, the corruption of the state churches) and amidst Christendom before the break of WWII in September 1939. His theology and actions also saved the lives of some Jews he personally helped escape to Switzerland.

The presentation is rich in quotes from his writings, church sermons, and letters he wrote. One gets the feeling of familiarity with his books ("Life Together: The Classic Exploration of Faith in Community," "Cost of Discipleship / Nachfolge," "Letters and Papers from Prison") after viewing this film. Also quite a bit of time is spent explaining the geopolitical and social situation of Germany between the end of WWI and capitulation of German army in 1945 and during Dietrich's time abroad in Barcelona/Spain, American, and England.

This Christian, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, had a living theology and a theology that was alive. And his life and writings are as relevant to our post-modern lives as they were to the turbulent 30s and murderous 40s.

As a companion (especially for the un-churched or non-Christians) I would also recommend the 2003 First Run Features production of "Bonhoeffer - Pastor, Pacifist, Nazi Resister" also found on Amazon DVD.

Because His "grace" is "costly!" (to use Bonhoeffer's terminology)

"The Musgrave Ritual"
Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett) and Dr. John Watson (Edward Hardwicke) are brought to Hurlstone Manor by Reginald Musgrave (Michael Culver) to look into the disappearance of his butler, Brunton (James Hazeldine). Various clues (a crumpled piece of paper, a brass key, a peg of wood with string attached) suggest that Brunton's disappearance is somehow related to the "Musgrave ritual," an arcane practice compelling young Musgrave family members to recite an odd riddle that might have to do with buried treasure. Holmes's methodical approach to the problem is a lot of fun, and Brett and Hardwicke seem to be having a particularly good time outdoors, pursuing the solution under a bit of sunshine. Jeremy Paul, who adapted Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's story for this teledrama, won an Edgar Award for his script.

"The Man with the Twisted Lip"
One of the most ingenious of the Sherlock Holmes stories, "The Man with the Twisted Lip" presents the famous detective with one of his strangest cases. A gentleman named Neville St. Clair (Clive Francis) is missing, after having been briefly seen (looking quite agitated) by his wife (Eleanor David) in an upstairs window of a disreputable pub. Upon investigating, Mrs. St. Clair can only find traces of blood in the location; later, her husband's coat, mysteriously stuffed with pennies, turns up on a mud bank. Police have detained a notorious street beggar on suspicion of foul play, but Holmes and Dr. Watson believe there is more to the case than meets the eye. This highly enjoyable installment from the long-running Granada Television series is satisfying from beginning to end, with a witty conclusion and unexpected moral about class pressures. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Jeremy Brett - What else do you need to say?.......2007-02-09

Jeremy Brett was the best Sherlock Holmes I've ever seen. Basil Rathbone comes in a close second, but Jeremy captured the true essence of what Conan Doyle was thinking. What a great series of stories!

Description

Oscar Nominee William Hickey in one of his last screen performances stars in Seth Michael Donsky's "Twisted," a contemporary riff on Charles Dickens' classic "Oliver Twist" re-imagined in a New York city subculture brimming with male hustlers, homeless denizens, drug addicts and drag queens.

"A stylized, operatic fable of innocence and corruption, its world and that of Dickens' is one and the same." - Kevin Thomas, The Los Angeles Times

Written and Directed by Seth Michael Donsky

"Twisted"

Recognize Oliver?

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

"Oliver Twist" has taken on yet another update with the release of "Twisted". This time the scene of the action is the gay underground in New York City. However, any resemblance between this movie and the novel by Charles Dickens is very hard to fid. Even the names of the characters have been changed. Oliver is now Lee, a young man who must take care of himself by living on the streets. The Artful Dodger is now Fine Art, a hard hustler with bleached blonde hair and who will do anything for a dollar. Fagin is now Andre, a momma's boy and Bill Sykes and Nancy are now a couple who are into S & M and Nancy, who is now Angel, is Lee's protector.
The script is a mess. The director somehow lost his vision and what we have is a very gritty movie that does have some very good acting. In an attempt to make this into an art film, there are many fancy images, flashbacks and very strange juxtapositions. Instead of advancing the story, thy hinder any kind of plot delineation and the screenplay becomes an odd retelling of the original with very strange results. There is not anything good to say about the editing or the photography or the lighting. There are times when I had to strain my eyes to make out what was happening on the screen.
The character that shows the most promise is the drag queen. I am still trying to figure out what the tone and point of view of the film are. Yet the guys are eye candy but the film becomes boring very quickly. This is too bad because there is a lot of promise here. With a different director and a better screenplay, this could have been a wonderful film.

3 out of 5 stars Merely Average.......2006-08-04

I consider the movie to be average; it did not appear to be a particularly clever take on the original tale - and the acting didn't particularly engage me.

2 out of 5 stars Ehhh. .......2006-07-14

I wanted to like this movie so much more than I actually did. Unfortately it was pretty much a mess from beginning to end.

A great performance from Anthony Crivello though.

4 out of 5 stars A New Twist for Oliver Twist.......2001-11-09

What really makes this low-budget, indi film are the magnificent performances of this highly talented ensemble cast. Seth Michael Donsky, who wrote and directed it, had an excellent idea: set Charles Dickens' classic "Oliver Twist" in contemporary New York City. God knows, not much has changed since Dickens wrote his socially critical study of a young orphan boy, caught in the grips of an unfair society. With the low-budget that Donsky obviously had, he makes a valiant attempt at creating a visually dark and atmospheric montage of the underbelly of modern urban society. He doesn't always succeed, and the film is at points muddled, but the ultimate effect is strong.

The Twist: "Oliver", or as he's called here, Lee, has run away from an abusive foster home and fines comfort and shelter from the elderly street performer, Can Man (beautifully played by Ray Aranha). Can Man teaches him about dreams being the basis of hope, and how you must keep your dreams safe. After Can Man is brutally murdered by a gang of thugs, Lee is comforted and brought "home" by Fine Art - a cute take off on "The Artful Dodger". Fine Art (Jean Loup Wolfman gives an eerie performance) is a young call-boy living in Andre's all-male brothel. The elderly Andre (no less than William Hickey) is the story's Euro-trash version of "Fagan", who is reliant on Eddie (akin to "Bill Sykes") for the house's supply of drugs. Eddie (a scary performance by Anthony Crivello) has a fairly large revere in the city under his control. He pimps his boys and runs his deals, and no one gets in his way and lives to tell about it. Angel (a beautiful and sensitive performance by David Norona) is Eddie's "Nancy". All Angel wants out of life is to make Eddie happy, and become a serious musician. The first is impossible and the later doesn't suit Eddie.

Angel meets Lee at Andre's and take an instant liking to the child. He starts meeting Lee regularly to give him piano lessons. Andre of course, has a different career plan in mind for Lee and sends him out with Fine Art to learn the delicate art of hustling. Unfortunately, they hustle an undercover cop, who snaps Lee and turns him over to the juvenal authorities. Eddie and Andre fear what Lee might say, and strong-arm Angel into "kidnapping" him from the police.

In the end, Angel - along with his best friend, the drag queen, Shiniqua (Billy Porter is worth the price of the video), make a daring attempt at saving Lee's life while risking their own.

Independent movie-making almost at its best!

4 out of 5 stars Great Independent Film.......2001-08-19

A valiant attempt to bring to life the epic story of Oliver (Academy Award Winning Masterpiece) and transform it into modern day society and culture. It's quite the twist from the original musical version. From the attractive gay brothel boys run by Andre (played by William Hickey), to the hilarious protective drag queen, what more can you ask for in a story! Great performances by Billy Porter (well known for his work on stage) as well as Anthony Crivello (which I last saw on Broadway in "Kiss of the Spider Woman w/ Chita Rivera), and of coursre William Hickey (which I loved in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation) Highly recommend! A must see independent film
