Quite possibly the nadir of Steven Spielberg's career as a producer, this piece of sentimental junk from 1987 concerns five little spacecraft which arrive on Earth just in time to help out some New Yorkers getting kicked out of a tenement. The script's goo just sticks to the viewer, and the cast looks silly by trying not to be silly. You get the feeling that Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment was pretty much throwing stuff at the wall to see what would hang there, and they came up with this ridiculous thing. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars An rarely heard of classic.......2007-09-14

The official review by Amazon misses the point of this fun movie. True, if you are expecting the greatest movie of all time then this might fall a little short but honestly, it's just a fun movie. The story is simple but charming, the nolstalgia factor of the 80's wonderful and the special effects are great for it's time. And it really has some heart to it. Overall it's great to see this again after so many years and most people I know think it's a lot of fun, with a healthy dose of cheese! ;)

5 out of 5 stars I love this movie~.......2007-03-19

I had it on VHS for years and am still converting to DVD. I had to have this long time favorite. Jessica Tandy was such an awesome actress.

5 out of 5 stars For All Ages.......2006-11-04

This delightful film has it all: terrific acting, charming fantasy, low key action and appropriately targeted villain (greedy developer).

3 out of 5 stars Great Blend of the old and the New.......2006-11-03

There are so many reasons this is a good film. The biggest is that it has a main plot that even little children can understand and therefore watch it over and over again.
The other reason you should watch this film is for all of the little subplots. Let's see, there's a single mother, corporate greed, a washed up artist, an over-the-hill boxer, an older couple one of whom is a little confused, and best of all, there's little UFO's!
I'm sure you'll recognize at least a few of the actors who are very accomplished and pull this story off in a very believable way.
And, whether believable or not, there actually is a happy ending, but I won't spoil it for you.

4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Universe.......2006-10-15

This is a wonderful story showing the Universe can have Aliens that are not horrors monsters or disasters for humans and humanity. Kids or Adults can see a picture of Aliens, not the usual us in a strange colored costume but folks we cannot see or even recognize as folks. Strangers with a problem seek help and after receiving help, return the favor.
Aliens that flash thru the night abducting people, and destroying property are enemies.
Aliens that come in the night, make contact with local people, seeking understanding and trade, are far more likely representatives of extra solar beings.

This gentle reworking of Ted Hughes's 1968 novella was the unseen gem of 1999. Hogarth, a young boy who lives in the Maine woods during the cold war, befriends a giant robot. As with E.T., the iron giant is a misunderstood outsider who becomes a child's best friend, and Hogarth does his best to hide the massive figure from his mom (voiced by Jennifer Aniston) and the local scrap-yard beatnik (Harry Connick Jr.). Soon the suspicions of neighbors and a government agent (Christopher McDonald) spell trouble.

With no songs, no sidekicks, and no cheap ending, The Iron Giant is a refreshing change-- like an off-Broadway production compared to the glitz of Disney's annual animated extravaganzas. Director Brad Bird may have Family Dog and The Simpsons to his credit, but this film doesn't have that brand of scatological humor. As with the best family entertainments, there are gags that adults will howl at while the kids are watching something else (see Bird's interpretation of cold war propaganda). And the star is one cool piece of animated magic. Voiced by Vin Diesel (Saving Private Ryan's hulking Private Caparzo) and filled with more gadgets than a Swiss army knife, the giant is a grand thing to behold. And like another famous cinema tin man, our hero--and the movie--has heart. Superb entertainment for ages 5 and up. --Doug Thomas

Description

A young boy rescues a huge robot which has rocketed to earth from space - and tries to protect the genial giant from a nosey government agent and the military. A captivating animated feature that's part metal, part magic and all heart.

5 out of 5 stars '57 Chevy's make a tasty breakfast treat.......2007-09-02

Take the ideas of knowing right from wrong and having a choice, then stylishly wrap them both around the most unlikely personification of innocence, and what will you have? The main character of this highly enjoyable tale, the Iron Giant, of course. Superbly played by Vin Diesel, this fantastic alien life form -the odd looking giant to our human eyes, has mysteriously found himself in a strange land. With a touch of amnesia.

But fear not, he turns out to be one big and very likeable dufus. Never mind his appetite for power transmission towers, '57 Chevy's and other assorted ferrous foodstuff, the big guy's got mettle. As he finds a friend in the smart, imaginative kid Hogarth, the possibilities for change are presented.

This potential, the one within, and the way it all plays out, is where I found the appeal of this movie. It has heart, good natured humor, and the voices really match the characters. The pacing and supporting cast are all spot on as well. The expressive animation, and the level of detail in the mechanical design made me an instant fan. Yes, I mean the way they animated this robot is just cool.

I'm happy to have this, it's a top notch production. Included: 8 additional scense, bits for the Duck and Cover Sequence & The Voice of the Giant; two trailers, a motion gallery (with music, stills, color sequences combined), as well as a Behind the Armor feature, which gives more detail on the film making.

5 out of 5 stars Visually appealling and a sweet story about the clarity of childhood thinking compared to adult prejudice and stupidity........2007-08-27

I first saw this movie in the theatre in Japan (animation capital of the world that it is), and watched it several times since then on DVD. I love the feel and style of this movie, but what I mostly love is the comparative reactions to the Iron Giant by Hogarth versus his progressively adult and responsible counterparts.

Hogarth isn't the least bit scared of the giant--he thinks it's really cool--and after some initial fear, so does his super cool adult, artist friend Dean. But Hogarth knows the adults would freak out if they knew, and so tries to hide and protect his robot friend from the adults.

Enter an overeager and overzealous government representative who is most fond of telling people he's important because he's from the government. His chief concern in life is finding any incursion of the 'commies' on US soil, and when he suspects a robot from space may be on the loose, he jumps to the conclusion that it must be Russian. If he can only confirm this, he can really live his ultimate fantasy--calling in the Army to blast the thing out of existence.

Hogarth teaches the robot human values from a child's perspective, and ends up saving everyone from what might have been the end of humanity--but without really knowing it. Hogarth just wants his friend, the robot, to live, be happy, and not be harmed or cause harm to anyone.

Hogarth has natural morals. He knows what's good and bad without considering good and evil. Even if the robot had a 'Made in Russia' label on it, Hogarth would have helped, befriended, and did his best to teach it right and wrong all the same. His character is a nice refresher for us jaded adults and our thousands of issues.

All of the above aside, it's a very entertaining movie which couldn't be safer for your children to watch, and adults will be thrown back into how they thought as children.

4 out of 5 stars The Iron Giant (Special Edition).......2007-08-23

This video was surprisingly well done. It's a great story and the animation was wonderful. For a children's story, I thought it was a mistake to use the words "hell" and "damn" in it--so be advised.

4 out of 5 stars If your boys like robots, they'll love it........2007-08-15

My preschoolers love robots, so we got this dvd for them. They love it because of the robot. There is some mild violence--the army comes in with guns and tanks-- and portions where the little boy disobeys his mommy, so be forewarned. I had to talk about those portions with my sons and remind them that those things were no-nos. If you don't like your boys being exposed to any sort of gun visuals, maybe you won't like this.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome film!!.......2007-08-14

My kids and I LOVE this film. It is so under appreciated! IT is a MUST see for the whole family!

Jane Fonda's memorable, zero-gravity striptease during the opening credits of this 1968 Roger Vadim movie is the closest the film comes to a liberated marriage of wit and sex. Based on a French comic strip, the story concerns the adventures of a 41st-century woman, who pretty much gets it on with whomever asks. The sci-fi sets were pretty interesting at the time, though they look rather anachronistic now. Appreciated today mostly as a camp classic, the movie is actually more trying than anything else. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Jane's body is the star!.......2007-07-31

If you are expecting a great film, then leave this one alone. If you want to see Jane Fonda, in her prime, in various states of undress, then you are in luck!
The 'strip tease' at the start of the film is infamous. If you use your 'pause' and 'stop' buttons on the DVD, you CAN see Jane's breasts a few times.
Every costume Jane wears shows off her great body. Twice, her costume is torn up, and we see even more skin!
My favorite scene is "The Excessive Machine". Jane is put in this 'organ' and stripped of her costume. The machine is meant to pleasure you to death. Jane Fonda is great here. She sells this scene for all it's worth. Soon, she is covered in sweat, and we get many close-ups of her face, as she gives in to the pleasure. Jane then gives what may be the best orgasm ever in a PG film.
Again, the plot, and special effects are not that good. But Jane Fonda's body ROCKS!

4 out of 5 stars Barbarella.......2007-05-28

A fantastic sci-fi sexual experience! Totally cosmic and Jane Fonda is a very hot woman!!
Worth it!

3 out of 5 stars Expired Cheese.......2007-05-25

I think "Barbarella" is best appreciated at a midnight showing with people shouting rude things at the screen. The flick is undermined by the lunkheaded direction of Roger Vadim. Did anybody explain to this guy that he was making camp? Also on display is some of the most garish art direction ever. Austin Powers would vomit. I did dig the shag carpeting in Barb's spaceship, though. What redeems this enterprise is the acting, not least Jane Fonda in the title role. Jane, consummate actress that she is, did understand the tongue-in-cheek aspects of the film. Jane's striptease over the opening credits is something to write home about. Good contributions are also given by David Hemings, Milo O'Shea, Anita Pallenberg, and Ugo Tognazzi. Venture into this flick for it's curiousity value and nothing else.

4 out of 5 stars "Your mission Barbarella: find Durand-Durand.".......2007-04-09

Jane Fonda stars in a title role of this famous cult sci-fi sex comedy as a space beauty in the variety of skimpy outfits. She looks great - all male (and female) creatures on a strange planet SoGo (Sodom and Gomorra?) drooled over her.

"Barbarella" (1968) directed by then Fonda's husband, Roger Vadim may be the silliest, the cheesiest, the campiest movie ever made but it is certainly one of the most entertaining comedies I've seen and is Fun with the capital "F". It is also very "pretty - pretty".

So, what do we have here? In the year 40.000, Barbarella "the Queen of the Galaxy" is sent by the President of Earth in search of the disappeared scientist named Durand Durand (finally I learned how the band got its name.) While looking for him, her space ship crashes on the planet Sogo where she encounters Pygar the Blind Angel (yes the man with the wings), Professor Ping - kind scientist (the celebrated and the finest mime artist Marcel Marceau in the rare speaking role), Dildano (David Hemmings of "Blowup") - the revolutionary who plots to overthrow the evil empire, Marcan - the barbarian who introduces Barbarella to an old fashioned love making (the advanced one is achieved by taking a pill and holding hands - welcome to the brave new world!) and The Great Tyrant - dangerous and very attractive ruler of Sogo (Anita Pallenberg, the object of Mick's, Brian's and Keith's desire and Mrs. Keith Richard at the time) who calls Barbarella "pretty-pretty" and invites her to come and play.

Fonda is quite good as a naive Barbarella and sometimes there is such an ironic and intelligent smile on her face that it should not surprise you what a fine actress she would eventually become.

Italian horror master Mario Bava brought his considerable skills to bear on this hypnotic genre hybrid, creating one of the most eerily atmospheric science fiction films ever made. A spaceship is lured to a mysterious planet, where members of its crew are slaughtered, and their bodies possessed by a near-extinct alien race--a minimalist plot, to be sure, but in the hands of Bava and cinematographer Antonio Rinaldi, Planet of the Vampires (the best-known of this film's many titles) is a near-masterpiece of style over substance. The simplest sets and backdrops are composed with a perfect eye for perspective and color, with sensible spaceship design and memorable costumes that look like they sprang from the futuristic fantasies of an S&M biker gang. Performances are secondary but effectively low-key, serving to enhance Bava's painterly use of matte work and miniatures. With a surprise twist ending, POTV is an essential addition to anyone's sci-fi collection. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars sick horror sci fi.......2007-04-18

THis film came out in 65 - the original star trek came out in 66. Yunno those star trek plots where the psychic aliens take over crew members? This film is like the horror version of that plot. (Ray bradbury's martian chronicals is probably the inspiration for this type of stuff - he took hp lovecrafts approach to sci fi to another level)

I especially loved the creepy creepy vintage sci fi sound design (make sure youre in the right state of mind to enjoy this). It starts slow and just keeps getting better and better. When they find the alien ship! WOAH!!!

but all in that hokey 60s sci fi way - like the original star trek. obviously (as other reviewers have noted) this movie was a big inspiration on ALIEN as well. well worth your time and $.

1 out of 5 stars planet of the vampires.......2006-10-01

if there could be a worse movie, i am not aware of it. while it has a surprising end, it has added a new meaning to the word 'acting.' clumsy and uneven performance, strange music and , well, you get the point. there is no point.

4 out of 5 stars Italian Yellow Fever in Space, 28 March 2006.......2006-03-29

First of all "Planet of the Vampires" is not about vampires, it is about aliens taking over the bodies of a group of space explorers. It alternates between science fiction and horror. Although directed by legendary horror filmmaker Mario Bava, it is technically science fiction. The production design and premise were heavily influenced by "Forbidden Planet" and would itself provide much of the inspiration for "Alien".

Bava is generally acknowledged as the founder of the "gialli" style of Italian horror/thrillers, which is characterized by a much greater focus on the deed of murder (whereas other styles emphasize the solving of the murder). They also have a lavish and lush look and in this regard could be thought of as the opposite of the "film noir" style. Dario Argento is the other acknowledged master of "gialli".

If you are looking for a sci-fi film heavy on atmosphere, with very original cinematography, and featuring the all-time coolest black leather space suits; then "Planet of the Vampires" is a must see.

There is also a subtle anti-fascist political message. Note that the crews of both the Argos and the Galliot wear Nazi "SS" lightening flash insignia and that the disciplined and militaristic natures of the crewman make it far easier for the aliens to successfully impersonate them. The ending implies that 1930's fascism was actually an attempt by the invading aliens to take over the earth.

Bava appears to cheat a bit to make the ending a bigger surprise. It is possible that this may just be the English dubbing which assigns earth names to the crew members and has the alien referring to them as humans.

The scene with the bodies of dead crewmen rising up out of their graves still wrapped in clear plastic is extremely eerie.

As in "Alien" the two spacecraft are lured to the planet by mysterious radio signals and find an earlier victim of the same trap. Both ships are damaged upon landing and an alien presence is able to turn various members of the crew into violent killers.

As the engineer works to repair The Argos, its crew is slowly being taken over. Most of the suspense comes from the race to fix the ship before everyone falls victim to the alien possession. But eventually the captain begins to worry that a successful repair will furnish the aliens with a means to leave this planet and invade his unsuspecting home world.

A historically significant film that is still very entertaining.

Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.

this 1965 sci-fi horror film is one of the movies that gave rise to alien. a ship in deep space goes to the aid of a ship in trouble and finds bodyless aliens who are looking for host. very creepy and just the right amount of goosebumps. give it a try

4 out of 5 stars "How many strange things seem and then are, ever since we got on this planet?".......2006-01-31

I don't think I've seen a film that went by as many different titles as American International Picture's Planet of the Vampires (1965) has over the years...there's Terrore nello spazio, Demon Planet, Planet of Blood, Space Mutants, Terror en el espacio, Terror in Space, The Haunted Planet, The Haunted World, The Outlawed Planet, The Planet of Terror, and my personal favorite, The Planet of the Damned, which, I think, is a more appropriate title than the one used here, but whatever...directed by the legendary Mario Bava (Black Sunday, A Bay of Blood), who also co-wrote the original version, the film features Barry Sullivan (Shark!, Earthquake), along with a slew of foreign actors, mainly Italians, I'm not really familiar with including Norma Bengell (The Murdered House), Ángel Aranda (Satan's Blood), Evi Marandi (Agent 077 Fury in the Orient), and Fernando Villena (The Blind Dead 4).

The film opens in deep space, as we're aboard a futuristic looking ship named The Argos, which features about the biggest control room I've ever seen...seriously, it's huge, and includes a whole lot of unused space...at least there's lots of room to move...anyway, this is one of two ships traveling towards a distant planet called Aura. Apparently some sort of signal is emanating from the mysterious, fog shrouded, world and The Argos, along with her sister ship The Galilea, and have come to check things out. After losing contact with The Galilea, Captain Mark Markary (Sullivan) and his crew finds themselves in trouble, as The Argos is caught in some sort of gravity well, one that is drawing the ship towards the planet. After an emergency landing, the crew finds themselves in the grip of the space madness, attacking each other for no, apparent reason (it's like they turned Klingon), but eventually they manage to snap out of it, with no memories of their actions. After spotting their sister ship off in the distance, the captain and a few hardy individuals hoof it on over, across a barren, craggy, molten wasteland, only to find the crew of The Galilea in bad shape, i.e. they're dead, Jim. But are they? After the `away team' buries the recently deceased and returns to The Argos we discover the ship is damaged to the point where they can't take off, which is really bad because, due to the wacky orbit of the planet, if they don't leave in like three days, they'll never get home. The engineering dude says he might be able to make repairs enough for them to take off, or blow up (that's reassuring). Only problem is crewmembers keep disappearing, and the bodies previously buried don't seem to want to stay buried...turns out the crusty fog planet is inhabited by unseen creatures that have their own designs for The Argos and her crew, ones that don't necessarily entail a peaceful co-existence, if you know what I mean.

Overall I really enjoyed this, creepy, highly atmospheric science fiction thriller, and it was really interesting to see various concepts in this early film adapted in other, more poplar films released later on, specifically Ridley Scott's 1979 feature Alien. At one point the crew finds a large, derelict alien spacecraft, complete with skeletal remains of some rather large beings...sound familiar? Now I'm not saying Dan O'Bannon, who wrote the story for Alien, stole the idea from Bava's film, but one can't help but notice various similarities between the two films. One aspect that really sets this feature apart from many of the science fiction films of the time is the attention to detail regarding the overall atmosphere. This may have been a modestly budgeted feature, but it's hard to tell given the expansive space ship interiors and creepy, intimidating landscapes of the alien planet. One thing's for sure, Bava certainly knew how to set the mood utilizing effects, such as lighting, fog, spooky electronic scoring, etc. to create rich, vibrant, and imaginative backdrops for his features. The pacing can get a bit slow here, but I really didn't mind, as there was so much to take in visually. Something I really appreciated were the special effects in this film, often incorporating miniatures mixed in with live action footage, looking very realistic. Whoever was responsible for this did an outstanding job, given the technology available at the time. I'm no special effects expert, but I have seen enough films to provide an opinion towards this aspect, respective to when the movie was made. As far as the acting goes, well, it works well enough for the film, but none really stood out as being overly impressive, partly due to the sometimes odd and expository dialogue. The Captain's signature line seemed to be "I'll explain it to you later." Another kind of goofy aspect was how, after a mysterious, unexplained occurrence it wasn't unusual for someone to make an incredibly intuitive deduction that was right on the money...it was almost as if the characters in the film were privy to the script. One example of this is when a crewmember, apparently in a trance, tries to steal a vital component from The Argos, only to be stopped by Captain Markley. Afterwards he tries to describe what happened, and another states his mind must have been controlled by some malevolent alien force inherent to the planet. I suppose one would have eventually come to that conclusion, but given how little information was available at the time, it seemed like an amazingly accurate hypothesis. These various, astute deductions seemed almost uncanny at time with regards to their accuracy. I did like the mixture of males and females in the cast, along with the fact the female characters were relatively strong ones, expected to perform the same duties as their male counterparts, and not there just to serve coffee and such as was commonplace in films like this of the time. There are a few unintentionally humorous bits throughout, my favorite being when the captain and a female crewmember were investigating the giant, derelict alien ship. The female crewmember touches a disk found on the ship, only to get one heck of a shock, issuing an appropriate yelp. The captain comes running over, asks what happened, and then proceeds to touch the very same object she did, receiving the same shock...it's like going to a restaurant and having the server delivering a plate of food and issuing a warning that said plate is very hot. After she leaves, what's the first thing you see people do? Touch the damn plate...but I digress...if you enjoy classic science fiction films oozing with atmosphere and don't mind sometimes overly talky characters, then this feature would definitely be worth your time.

The picture on this DVD, presented in non-anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1), looks very sharp and does justice to Bava's glorious, often haunting visuals, and the Dolby Digital audio comes across extremely well, highlighting the highly excellent and appropriate musical scoring. The only extra available is a slightly worn, original theatrical trailer.

Cookieman108

If I learned anything from this film, it's that if you ever find yourself on a derelict alien spaceship, don't go flipping switches...by the way, I almost forgot to mention why I didn't care for the title of this film...there aren't any vampires in the film, at least not in the tradition sense.

This is a very good movie on many levels! The story is original and is really interesting. I am a fan of this quirky director and this is his best work to date. If you can find this along with "Frankenhooker" and the "Basket Case" trilogy your in for some strange, but excellent cinema!

This one is about a worm like parasite named Aylmer (pronounced Elmer) that injects people with a kind of drug "juice," but in order to deliver the "juice" the subjects have to help Aylmer obtain human brains. After the character Brian realizes that Aylmer is eating human brains while he(Brian) is high, he tries to stop taking the "juice." However, this is a lot harder than he thinks as his body begins to unergo withdrawal. Brian is left with no other choice but to help Aylmer get what he wants in exchange for the "juice." If you can find this movie I highly recommend it. It has gone out of print, but if you do a search some places still carry it for a reasonble price.

5 out of 5 stars Sick, Twisted Little Film From 'Basket Case' Director...4.5 stars.......2005-11-13

Well, I have to admit that after I saw the sick BASKET CASE, I wondered what other movies Frank Henenlotter had made besides the BASKET CASE series. I found this sick, twisted film a few years ago and ordered the special edition DVD and finally got it days later. Nervous, I wondered how this film would stand up against BASKET CASE and how good it would be...and to my surprise, I was not at all disappointed.

BRAIN DAMAGE is a freakish tale of a young man named Brian (Rick Herbst), who happens to be the next to fall victim to a worm-like parasite named Alymer (voiced in Bing Crosby-type fashion by the hilariously over-the-top John Zacherle). We learn in the first frame of the film about Alymer (he prefers 'Elmer') and his past family, and how they have tried to wean him on sheep's brains. Well, Alymer is just plain sick of that, and he wants real human brains, so he gets in touch with Brian, showing up at his place. He explains his situation to Brian, and tells him if he gets him brains, he will inject him with a fluid drug that gives him the ultimate pleasurable feeling. Brian reluctantly agrees, and so now he and Alymer become "attached" to some degree. They go on a killing spree, knocking off people by cornering them in less-crowded places. The best scene involves a little sexual "job" that you will laugh your head off to, but it's also kind of sick in a twisted way. The trouble with Alymer and Brian's relationship is that it's interfering with Brian's relationship with his girlfriend Barbara (Jennifer Lowry, cute and competent in her role). This creates real tension between Brian and Alymer, leading the ultimate showdown for control of Brian's mind. The ending wasn't as strong as it could have been, it was more weird and strange than satisfying, but the movie itself is a hoot and there are some decent chills throughout the movie. This is a comedy horror film, and you too will feel the same about it.

Without comparison to Henenlotter's twisted debut feature, BRAIN DAMAGE stands on its own as a own as a bizarre cult flick. While certainly not as successful as BASKET CASE, it's as much in touch with the strangely creepy and bizarre as the aforementioned film. Ever wonder what would happen if you had to help a parasite get brains and would fall victim to its addictive psycho-drug? Look no further!

1 out of 5 stars Worst movie EVAR!.......2004-08-04

I love bad cheesy movies (see 'The Stuff'), but this has got to be one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Mind you, I *did* make it through the whole thing so I guess something made me keep watching. Maybe it was hope that it would get better.

Released in 1972 under the international title Panic on the Trans-Siberian Express, this effective horror thriller is now regarded as one of the better European horror films of the 1970s, aided immeasurably by the casting of horror icons Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. Set at the turn of the 20th century, the story begins in China when the arrogant British Professor Saxton (played by Lee) boards the Trans-Siberian Express with a mysterious crate containing a body that he claims is the missing link in human evolution. What he doesn't know is that his ancient discovery is still alive--a monster with glowing red eyes that stare into the eyes of its victims, boiling their brains and absorbing their intelligence, turning them into zombies possessed by the creature's evolving personality! Pretty soon even Telly Savalas (as a power-mad Cossack) is raving among the train full of zombies, and it's up to Lee and rival anthropologist Cushing to destroy them... or die! There's a surplus of thrills and chills in this sharp, fast-paced Spanish-British production, made at a time when suspense and clever writing were still valued over graphic gore and special effects. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars RUNAWAY RIDE INTO TERROR!.......2007-06-25

One of the underrated gems of classic horror, HORROR EXPRESS is a surprisingly effective chiller that succeeds where many big-budget genre films fail. Headliners Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, and Telly Savalas guarrantee superlative acting, while the well-handled direction makes the most of the romantic 19th-century trans-Siberian train on which the story unfolds. The plot is simple--anthropologist Lee boxes up a frozen fossil that may be the elusive Missing Link and brings it aboard the eponymous train of the title, where it returns to life and begins preying upon the train's unsuspecting passengers--but blossoms into a many-headed hydra of gothic horror. The script is refreshingly literate, incorporating the fierce rivalry between religion and science that was perhaps even more bitter in the 1800s than it is today, and there soon proves to be even more to Lee's Missing Link than even he suspects. The special effects are perfectly adequate and hold up well, but the relative lack of gore compared to today's splatterfests is another check in this little movie's favor. HORROR EXPRESS is not a Hammer Film, though it should have been, and certainly captures much of Hammer's flavor and style. And at a compact 88 minutes running time, HORROR EXPRESS isn't spread too thin like many other movies. Widely available nowadays in a variety of public domain editions, HORROR EXPRESS is an atmospheric, haunting thriller that should satisfy any fan of classic horror.

5 out of 5 stars Horror Express.......2006-11-26

This is horror cinema! Horror Express is easily one of my all time favourite classic horror films. It has all the hallmarks of greatness. Firstly it stars 2 supremo horror actors, the late great Mr Peter Cushing and the equally brilliant Mr Christopher Lee. Secondly it has a story to die for including, a alien entity that is bought aboard the the Express train frozen in a "missing link" monster. (But frozen not for long!) An evil being that drains the memories of the living through simply staring and hypnotizing its prey, turning them into white eyed corpses. Mouth watering creature and camera effects, man this is one creepy entity. A finale that includes a horde of undead zombies amassing towards a trapped group of passengers on a speeding coal fired locamotive. And much, much more. Oh and lest we forget a strong supporting cast including Telly Savalas. Horror Express quite simply has some of the most memorable and genuinely chilling scenes and imagry of any horror film, period. An absolute horror classic. Don't miss this gem. I've seen it no less than 5 times since I first discovered it a few years back and it never ceases to feel fresh or pack the same powerful punch as the first viewing. This is a very rare feat.

I just recently picked up this DVD (mine was from Gemstone Entertainment). I never heard of it before but noticed it starred Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Telly Savalas and was made in 1972. Although this wasn't a Hammer film it obviously had the aura of a Hammer film, and I love Hammer films. So I picked it up (for a buck, no less!).

Ah, what a pleasant surprise!

How can I best describe "Horror Express"? Okay, imagine if a guy had in his hands the DVDs "The Thing" (Carpenter's version), "Murder on the Orient Express," "Trog," "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" (huh?) and a few Hammer films with Lee & Cushing. Got that? Okay, now imagine this dude taking a transporter beam back in time to 1972 and re-appearing with only one DVD, a mixture of all the above films. Can you imagine that? Good, because that's pretty much how "Horror Express" will strike you.

You might be curious as to why I included "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" in the list of films; it's because the score in "Horror Express" will bring to mind that popular Western composition, except that it's a bit more eerie and fitting for a 1972 horror flick.

Another highlight of the film is that it features two incredibly gorgeous redheads: Helga Line, who was 40 years old at the time, and another cutie that was half Helga's age playing a Countess of some sort.

At 88 minutes the film definitely doesn't overstay its welcome, which can be a good thing.

In its time I bet "Horror Express" was cutting-edge horrific entertainment. Today, some of it will strike you as unbelievable (for instance, Lee accepts too quickly the notion that the caveman/fossil is alive and roaming around the train); at other times it will strike you as ridiculous and amusing (it's hard suppressing a giggle here and there, especially when they view dinosaurs through a microscope in the blood of the creature [huh?]). But the film at least takes its subject seriously; it's never campy that's for sure.

If my review piques your interest, don't hesitate to pick up "Horror Express." I'm glad I did. (Besides, how can you go wrong at such an ultra-cheap price?)

Finally a high quality transfer where I can actually see the inside of the train and the monster, and Telly Savalas in his Red robed coat!

This is a movie I always liked and now have got the DVD since this shows it complete like it was at the Theatre.

Excellent story of the alien who uses "hosts" to survive, nice atmosphere of the early 1900's.

The opening and closing credits are fine,no problem here as another reviewer mentioned they were fuzzy ? , its a train at night with titles like the lights of the train and there never were any credits at The End, it just faded to black. Typical of 70's movies.

Great movie to watch on a rainy saturday afternoon.

5 out of 5 stars anime the old fashioned way.......2007-03-22

This is five stars because it was what I was looking for! There is no nudity (a PG film)and the story is well written with tragedy, comedy and hope. It deals with classic themes, specifically, what defines "human" and the ethics of revenge. If you are looking for three episodes of excellent entertainment for an inexpensive price with some shred of moral value...this is your anime.

5 out of 5 stars These angels pack a punch!.......2005-10-09

Based in the future, the future of mankind rests on unlikely girls, they are androids and earths only chance for freedom from the alien invaders. But haunted by their pasts, each one more horrible than the last, will the angels be able to win the day? Or will the human race be wiped out? Check it out and see

5 out of 5 stars Their not called angels for nothing.......2005-08-31

In the near future the unknown enemy, called Space Emigrants, invaded and took over the earth. The humans had escaped to underwater cities, and for 100 years they have been waiting for the chance to recapture the earth. Then the five person electric brain (cyborg) attack team, Voogie Angels was formed, and they started to move.

4 out of 5 stars More plot than expected.......2002-04-04

Too bad this is the only vid' I can find of Voogie; it's another lost gem in my opinion. The basis is pretty plain: alien invaders are conquering Earth and a band of heros must defeat them. Nothing new on the fly, but the way the story plays out is quite interesting.

Voogie and crew are another set of good looking anime gals (if you like 'em skinny and breasty and tall) in a rather serious situation with some humor to break the ice. But in the end this has some serious stuff. The main exploratory theme is what makes a person human; it doesn't get in the way of some good melodrama and decent graphics and action. There are kinks (same darn plot devices here and there) but overall I liked it.

Perfect? No. Terrible? Only if you want to avoid some thinking and prefer ninjas, sex-only, non-violence, comedy only, kiddie shows, etc. If you like a good action-humor sci-fi plot with characters who are real and girls in skimpy duds and a talking intelligent space ship that can kick-butt (but OOPS! runs out of power doing so), at least rent it. I compare it to the quality (but not plot) of Outlaw Star, Cowboy Beebop, Tenamonya Voyagers, and most other ordinary Japanese anime.

Sigh, only episodes availble. Indeed, it seems the popularity of many videos requires multiple episodes; few people want to watch one set and get a good pic' and then have no more to watch. I rate few movies as "****" four stars; they have to stand out for me.

    Money well spent to me.

3 out of 5 stars Passable filler anime.......2001-08-30

Did you like Saber Marionette J? If so, just go ahead and buy this without hesitation. Or, if you like Masami Obarii's character designs, go ahead and buy this without hesitation too (although the chest sized are certainly scaled down from something like Gowcaizer, there's still more fanservice than you can shake a stick at). For the rest of you, here's my opinion:

Inspired by a set of radio dramas, Voogie's Angel is perfectly passable filler anime. It's one of those OVAs that you don't feel like you've wasted your time if you watch, but at the same time you can probably pass over it and not feel like youre missing too much either. The super-quickie plot summary is as follows - aliens show up, drive humans into underwater bases, humans build a 5-woman cyborg combat team (complete with strange ship thing with the brain of a dead taxi-driver) to go kick some alien tookas in ludicrously revealing outfits. Voogie is the leader of the team, and each team member has a "quirk", as one has psychic powers, one has reoccuring amnesia, etc. Each of the 5 main girls actually has a somewhat sad side story of how they originally died, and were eventually reborn as the cyborg fighters. You have your requisite mix of comedy, action, and pseudo-drama, and there is a climax of sorts that leaves the way open for a sequel.

The DVD does get decent marks for having all 3 OVAs on the disc... standalone discs are pretty rare. The picture quality is fine. It looks a little soft, but that's probably more the fault of the original material. Colors are decently saturated and I noticed no major artifacts or encoding errors, and the menus are static and very fast in access speeds. No real extras to speak up, just 4 trailers.

    Description

Ride the Horror Express with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee as turn-of-the-century monster-hunters. In the early 1900s, anthropologist Alexander Saxton (Christopher Lee) unearths in China what he believes to be the scientific find of the new century: the centuries-old frozen body of a gigantic ape-like man, a veritable "missing link." Booking a ticket on the train back to Europe with his crated-up, but still very healthy discovery, he joins an international group of passengers on a nightmarish adventure aboard the Horror Express, including a game of discovery with rival scientist Dr. Wells (Peter Cushing). A relentlessly entertaining cult favorite, "Horror Express" is the best 1970s pairing of genre stalwarts Cushing and Lee, this time as reluctant comrades forced to combat a diabolical creature bent on human destruction.
