A MUST SEE by all freethinkers.......2007-09-16
No End In Sight is a powerful and poignant documentary that every freethinker should see. It is not a political bashing movie by the leftist but rather an honest recollection of the events leading up to the occupation by the actual individuals involved with carrying out the administration's misguided and ill-conceived plans. It's a tale of honest people following the orders (albeit reluctantly) of a dishonest demagogue and the pain and regret they now feel for being a part of the most unjust military occupation of this century. When will the citizenry of our country wake up to the atrocities being done in the name of "We the people" of these United States? It's time to recognize that "High crimes and misdemeanors" have been repeatedly committed by the arrogant and ignorant in this administration and that the only prudent recourse is IMPEACHMENT.
The Power of Delusion .......2007-09-07
"No End in Sight" is a history of the US involvement in Iraq beginning with the Gulf War in 1991 and continuing up until the end of 2006. The interviewees and informants are former senior U.S. government officials, including Rich Armitage and Jay Garner, military and intelligence officers, soldiers, marines, and Iraqis from all walks of life. All senior Bush administration officials declined to be interviewed for the movie. The tone of "No End in Sight" is bleak; the music is appropriately funeral.
There's little that we haven't seen before in this movie, but its useful to recall how we got involved in Iraq. Reverse selection of brains for a thousand years could not have resulted in a bigger mess than created by Messrs. Bush, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, et al. Perhaps the sub-title of the movie should be, "The Power of Delusionary Thinking" because the whole basis of our involvement in Iraq was due to the deluded minds of a few highly-placed US government officials. This movie brings that out clearly.
The most startling fact to come out of the movie is that the ultimate cost of the war is now projected at nearly 2 trillion dollars. Some elementary arithmetic establishes that our expenditure in Iraq will be about $80,000 for each and every Iraqi man, woman, and child. We would have had a better chance of success had we just dropped dollar bills instead of bombs. A disaster many times over, our most optimistic hope now can only be that the mess we have made in Iraq does not spread beyond its boundaries.

Powerful And Disturbing .......2007-09-07
Both in published reviews and among our citizen reviewers on this site, there has been some criticism levied against this documentary that there is little or nothing NEW presented here. Naysayers also opine that the film offers little analysis of options and that the title is misleading in that the filmmakers seem to be content to "rehash" mistakes of the past rather than focusing on solutions--i.e. discussing likely "ends" and getting them closer to being "in sight."
I can only speak for myself, of course, but I did indeed learn much that was new to me. Like many Americans, I had concerns about this war from the outset and was pained to see so many things going wrong so early--almost no sooner than the President had declared "mission accomplished." There was a basic sense that the administration had not adequately prepared for post-invasion realities, but I don't believe that I am in the minority when I say that I didn't have a full grasp of just how bungled that planning (if it can be called that) was.
This film lays out the history of those tragic mistakes concisely and graphically. There are certain advantages that film offers over even the best, most well-researched prose. Visuals are but one, but they are certainly an important one. It is literally painful to see the charred bodies, to hear the screams of the wounded and the dying. Even the best newspaper accounts or the most exhaustive books can't hit you in quite the same way. If it IS a rehash, it's a needed one, and a powerful one.
Again, I am speaking for myself when I say this, but I have to admit that I may have been in a strange sort of denial about this war. I thought I was following the news accounts fairly closely and that I had a basic understanding of what was happening (and failing to happen) in Iraq. But the film not only made the issues painfully graphic, it also convincingly made the case that even steps taken by the administration that were at least debatable ("de-Ba'athfication," the complete dismantling of the Iraqi military) were actual hopelessly misguided and counter-productive.
The looting and pillaging of Baghdad, to which the US administration effectively gave a green light, was an early sign that things were going wrong, perhaps hopelessly wrong. I recall reading accounts of the destruction of the National Museum--with its 4000 years worth of cultural history lost or destroyed--with some dismay. Seeing film footage of the same was literally sickening to me.
No two-hour documentary can be as extensive as the scholarly literature and expert journalism that emerges during the course of a protracted war, but there is a reason why the authors of so many recent books on Iraq opted to appear in this film--and they go beyond sheer self-promotion. A film can serve as a wake-up call, can get necessary dialogue going. (One can easily make the case that as a nation, we've been in denial about the realities of this conflict for quite some time now.)
"No End in Sight"? The charges that the title is misleading (since it is pointing to the future while the film's actual focus is on the recent PAST) is ultimately without standing. The film lays out the reasons for this quagmire (and yes, Mr. Rumsfeld, that's precisely what it is) clearly and logically. Commentators interviewed DO address the fact that because of those mistakes, there are no good solutions, and that Iraq's future looks bleak no matter whether we stay in force, pull out gradually or pull up stakes immediately. There truly is no clear end in sight. And that's downright scary.
Demonstrates The Utter Incompetence Of The Bush Administration.......2007-09-07
The most striking aspect of this documentary is that the people giving interviews are not your typical anti-war activists. To the contrary, they are people like Colonel Paul Hughes, a strategic planner for the Coalition Provisional Authority, and Barbara Bodine, ambassador in charge of Baghdad. They were the ones "on the ground" attempting to create a successful democracy in Iraq. But their efforts were stymied by arrogant and clueless higher ranking Bush officials such as Donald Rumsfield, Paul Wolfowitz and Paul Bremer.
The stories they tell of the Bush adminstration's extreme incompetence are mind boggling. For instance, how Bush officials chose to completely disband the Iraqi military. This left huge numbers of Iraqi men, with military experience and access to weapons, out on the street and with a strong desire to seek revenge against those who had taken away their jobs and livelihood. This problem was further compounded by the huge stashes of Iraqi military weapons that Bush officials foolishy left unguarded. Thus the Iraqi insurgents were able to achieve a level of weaponry and man power that to this day fuels the ongoing civil war. Part of the problem is that the military experts, like Colin Powell, were being ignored. While "chickenhawks" with no substantial military experience, such as Rumsfield, Wolfowitz and Cheney, were making all the decisions.
A strong argument can be made that the Iraq War was always doomed to turn into a Sunni versus Sh'ia civil war quagmire. But this movie isn't really aimed at those who opposed the war from the beginning. Instead it seems more directed at moderates and conservatives who initially supported the war but are beginning to question the results, especially those military families who have lost loved ones in what appears to be a hopeless cause.
It's hard for me to imagine that anyone - conservative or liberal, Democrat or Republican - could come away from this film and not feel angry and disillusioned at how the Bush administration has conducted the war. Highly recommended!
The first documentary that actually made me cry!.......2007-09-04
Facts and figures can usually be overwhelming and dry as dust;but when they are laid out so explicitly and compelling as first time documentary film maker Charles Ferguson has done,then it is really tough to not want to cry as I did."No End in Sight" means exactly what it says;if the U.S does not leave Iraq a projected $1.860 Trillion will be spent on this "War" and who knows how many more lives taken.What I like most about this film is that Ferguson interviews those who were in key positions in the military during the initial push into Iraq.This is their story from their lips.These were people appointed by the Bush Administration to go in and "get the job done and leave." You will hear just how this did not happen,and it is sad and frustrating. It is significant for me to note that in order for those in The Administration to comment and be interviewed.....ALL DECLINED!
Is this just another documentary to be picked apart by naysayers? I heard Ferguson speak and he said " I made mistakes and I would have made many more were it not for two things. First,filmmaker Alex Gibney (Enron:The Smartest Guys in the Room) agreed to consult.And second, my crew taught me my job." If ever there is a more daring and compelling expose of the manipulation and mishandling of The Iraq War someone would really have to excel mightily in order to surpass "No End in Sight."

A hallmark of the science fiction genre as well as a wry commentary on the political climate of the 1950s, The Day the Earth Stood Still is a sci-fi movie less concerned with special effects than with a social parable. A spacecraft lands in Washington, D.C., carrying a humanoid messenger from another world (Michael Rennie) imparting a warning to the people of Earth to cease their violent behavior. But panic ensues as the messenger lands and is shot by a nervous soldier. His large robot companion destroys the Capitol as the messenger escapes the confines of the hospital. He moves in with a family as a boarder and blends into society to observe the full range of the human experience. Director Robert Wise (West Side Story) not only provides one of the most recognizable icons of the science fiction world in his depiction of the massive robot loyal to his master, but he avoids the obvious camp elements of the story to create a quiet and observant story highlighting both the good and the bad in human nature. --Robert Lane
Description
The Day The Earth Stood Still depicts the arrival of an alien dignitary, Klaatu (Michael Rennie), who has come to earth with his deadly robot, Gort (Lock Martin), to deliver the message that earthlings must stop warring among themselves--or else. After being shot at by military guards, Klaatu is brought to a Washington, D.C. hospital, where he begs a sympathetic but frank Major White (Robert Osterloh) to gather all the world's leaders so he can tell them more specifically what he has come to warn them about. Losing patience, Klaatu slips into the human world, adapting a false identity and living at a boarding house where he meets a smart woman with a conscience and her inquisitive son. Both mother and son soon find themselves embroiled in the complex mystery of Klaatu, his message and the government's witch hunt for the alien.

An enlightened message of peace or a plug for capital punishment? Many misinterpret this film!.......2007-09-09
The Day the Earth Stood Still always appears on any list of "the best sci fi films of all time." It's easy to see why. First, it's more serious and less campy than most 50s sci fi, as well as more intelligent than most sci fi films in general. Second, Robert Wise's direction is masterful. Wise also gave us The Haunting (about the best horror film ever made), The Andromeda Strain and Star Trek the Motion Picture (both sci fi masterpieces in their own right). Casting unknowns in the leads was a pivotal decision. Had Klaatu been played by Spencer Tracy (as was actually considered) rather than British actor Michael Rennie the film would have been far less convincing. Patricia Neal, another relative unknown, was also a good choice. The mood and ambiance of the film would not have been as effective without Bernard Hermann's score, which is one of his all-time best (second only to his score for Vertigo in my opinion). Other little touches came together nicely to polish this gem off, such as hiring a real scientist and mathematician to lend credence to the science and math appearing in the film (a move other sci fi films would do well to follow!--by the way, the equations on the blackboard are real, not gobbledygook) as well as hiring a real giant to play Gort. Interestingly, those with giantism in real life are often extremely weak. When Gort was supposed to lift Patricia Neal and carry her into the saucer the actor who played him could not lift her; this is why you can see all the black cables around Neal--she was actually supported by a crane. Also deserving of mention is the screenplay--it crackles with excellent dialogue and many memorable lines. Examples include (paraphrasing here): "It's terrible when people substitute fear for reason," "Nothing is strange about Washington!" and "They're not people, they're Democrats!"
With all this said it must be added that a great many people misinterpret this film! Yes, the film has a message of peace, but think, just how did the aliens erect their peace? This film is NOT about non-violent, enlightened aliens who come to show us the error of our ways. Far from it!! What does Klaatu actually say when he explains himself to the scientists? He says basically that the rule of law is imperative AND that a law is ONLY AS GOOD as the ability to enforce it. That's it. As any behaviorist knows, he says that punishment works only when punishment is swift, harsh (the "punishee" has to fear the punishment, else it isn't punishment at all!) and invariable. People ignore laws in the US because they know they'll probably get away with it. (Think about it. If you KNEW you'd get a ticket every time you sped, would you ever drive over the speed limit?) What Klaatu says--and this is what so many people amazingly miss--is that THEY TOO were violent, but that they created a race of robot police agents, of which Gort is only one, and that if any of them commit a violent act one of these robots comes and immediately annihilates them. Since no one wants to be disintegrated by a Gort, no one commits violent crimes. What this film is actually about is the effectiveness of law--that any law is only as effective as the threat that backs it up. (I don't want to get too political here--though people have been politicizing this film for years--but contrary to the liberal backing of the film, this is a very conservative message!) What Klaatu ACTUALLY says is that we need to set up an effective system of capital punishment! That's what he actually says before leaving. Think about it.

What can I say? This is one of the greatest Sci-Fi movies in movie history. Take an enjoyable look if you haven't seen this classic!!

Une leçon de vie dans ce film mythique montrant d'un côté le savoir vivre et le bon goût des gens de l'époque et d'un autre côté la bêtise humaine déjà à l'oeuvre...
Corny but fun.......2007-08-17
Just like most of the 1950's classic black and white "monster" movies, this one is just as corny and "mild" compared to todays standards, but it's great fun. The acting is really pretty good - you find yourself drawn right into that boarding house where Bobby and his mother live (ok now her character name escapes me, but it's Patricia Neal)....and of course Gort standing guard at the spaceship does a tremendous job of making you feel like there is no way under the sun you're walking up that ramp towards the spaceship! (and he doesn't speak one single word) One blink of his super-duper evaporating x-ray and that's all it would take to convince me to get out of Dodge. Great fun - great for the family, and a must for your classic movie collection.

Director John Carpenter and special makeup effects master Rob Bottin teamed up for this 1982 remake of the 1951 science fiction classic The Thing from Another World, and the result is a mixed blessing. It's got moments of highly effective terror and spine-tingling suspense, but it's mostly a showcase for some of the goriest and most horrifically grotesque makeup effects ever created for a movie. With such highlights as a dog that splits open and blossoms into something indescribably gruesome, this is the kind of movie for die-hard horror fans and anyone who slows down to stare at fatal traffic accidents. On those terms, however, it's hard not to be impressed by the movie's wild and wacky freak show. It all begins when scientists at an arctic research station discover an alien spacecraft under the thick ice, and thaw out the alien body found aboard. What they don't know is that the alien can assume any human form, and before long the scientists can't tell who's real and who's a deadly alien threat. Kurt Russell leads the battle against the terrifying intruder, and the supporting cast includes Richard Masur, Richard Dysart, Donald Moffat, and Wilford Brimley. They're all playing standard characters who are neglected by the mechanistic screenplay (based on the classic sci-fi story "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell), but Carpenter's emphasis is clearly on the gross-out effects and escalating tension. If you've got the stomach for it (and let's face it, there's a big audience for eerie gore), this is a thrill ride you won't want to miss. --Jeff Shannon

ALIEN VS. AMERICAN SCIENTISTS.......2007-09-14
I have watched this movie numerous of times and I find that I love it more each time. Yesterday I let my eleven year old son watch it. When I told him what year that it came out he said, "Ahhh, come on, I hate it when you make me watch those old, stupid movies!" Within ten minutes he was engrossed. When the movie was over he told me that The Thing is now his favorite horror movie and that he was going to have nightmares. My point is that The Thing is such an incredible movie that every person, no matter what generation, is going to love it.
THE THINGS ARE AMONG US!!.......2007-09-01
they sure didn't give this movie the credit it deserved. i'm telling you john carpenter did it again. man, this movie was extra good. the actors did a phenomenal job, the whole idea was brilliant, and the setting...what better place. who's who. the aliens really do exist among us, but as humans. this one was just plain evil. for it's time the effects were great, personally one of the best. total isolation, the thing, paranoia sets in, distrust, and nowhere to go. all you have is to fight back, whether you're the last man standing. the ending was good, he leaves it all up to you. if they don't kill each other the weather surely will. i do recommend this mind blowing classic.
Class from Carpenter.......2007-09-01
I saw this at the Cinema in 1982 and on occasions had to watch through my fingers!
This film and Aliens were the last two great Sci-fi/horror films that did not have digital special effects. The effects in this film are astounding. For the younger people reading this (those born after the late 60's) you have to realise that what you see on the screen was actually created in the studio and not on a computer. They still look good compared with todays CGI and remain the pinnacle of animatronic special effects. Full credit to Rob Bottin the special effects wizard on The Thing.
The film itself is a claustraphobic affair once The Thing is loose in the camp, and you continally have doubts about which character is still human. The suspense is helped immensely by a intense music soundtrack by Ennio Morricone, who had obviously listened to some of Carpenters own soundtrack music.
Kurt Russell in the leading role does a great job as MacReady, and the supporting cast which includes Keith David (Platoon, Pitch Black) and Richard Dysart all give good performances.
This film was a high point for John Carpenters career, since whilst he has made some good films since (They Live for example) most of them have been very poor in comparison compared with this film.
The DVD has digital 5.1 sound.
"I know I'm human and some of you are human or you'd all jump me right now" McReady(Kurt Russell).......2007-08-30
I saw this one when it came out and have this one on my top 10 list of favorite horror movie. While it is true the effects are stunning and have yet to be matched, it is with repeat viewing that the better parts of the movie rise to the top.
This is a more accurate telling of the short story classic"Who Goes There?" which was the used to make the original "Thing". In that one we had a monster from outer space that was described as a "Carrot", while here we go back to the idea that the alien can assume the shape of anything it touches. This is where the movie gets it's scariest scenes from, you never know who is on your side or who is an alien.
The cast is great and once again Kurt Russell shows that he is a very fine actor and carry's this film. This is one that stays with you long after the movie is over.
Grotesque, violent, and repulsive horror at its best........2007-08-25
Years ago I saw this movie on television and I did not understand why this movie was considered a horror classic. On television most everything exciting was edited out and the plot was butchered due to the tv editing.
So I eventually watched it on DVD after a friend suggested I watch it again. I was very impressed. The Thing is not only a grotesque and ultra violent movie, especially for 1982, but it has a steady build up of suspence and twists and turns within the plot. Now, just because I said the movie was super gross especially for 1982 doesn't mean that The Thing doesn't stand strong against modern horror films. In fact The Thing creature is the sickest and most freaky alien I've ever seen in a movie. It would be awesome to see a sequel by the title of Alien VS. The Thing. I wonder who would win and what sort of mutants would form out of their battles.
This movie is highly recommended if you like horror, sci-fi and gore.

After the success of 1950's Destination Moon and 1951's When Worlds Collide, visionary producer George Pal brought the classic H.G. Wells story of a Martian invasion to the big screen, and it instantly became a science fiction classic and winner of the 1953 Academy Award for Best Special Effects. It's a work of frightening imagination, with its manta-ray spaceships armed with cobra-like probes that shoot a white-hot disintegration ray. As formations of alien ships continue to wreak destruction around the globe, the military is helpless to stop this enemy while scientists race to find an effective weapon. Gene Barry and Ann Robinson play the hero and heroine roles that were de rigueur for movies like this in the '50s, and their encounter with one of the Martians is as creepy today as it was in '53. It finally takes an unseen threat--simple Earth bacteria--to conquer the alien invaders, but not before War of the Worlds has provided a dazzling display of impressive special effects. As memorable for its sound effects as for its spectacular visions of destruction, this is a movie for the ages--the kind of spectacular that inspired little kids such as Steven Spielberg (not to mention Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, whose Independence Day cribs liberally from the plot) and still packs a punch. --Jeff Shannon
Description
H.G. Wells' chilling novel of a Martian invasion of Earth becomes even more frightening in this 1952 film adaptation that's widely regarded as one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time. An Oscar. winner for Best Special Effects, The War of the Worlds delivers eye-popping thrills, laser-hot action and unrelenting, edge-of-your-seat suspense. No one who has seen the film's depiction of the swan-shaped Martian machines-ticking and hissing menacingly as they cut their path of destruction-will ever forget their ominous impact.

Nostalgia.......2007-08-24
I love to get different versions of movies to compare. I enjoy this one especially because I have lived in this valley for almost all my life. They mention Pomona, La Puente and other cities I grew up around, and they show the area from way back. And who can forget that the Flying Wing was used in this movie. My dad worked on the original Flying Wing when it was at Ontario Airport. And it shows it taking off from Ontario Airport waaaaaay back a million years ago when it was a dusty field practically! It is great to watch just for the history lesson on our area. If you come from Upland, Ontario, Alta Loma, Pomona, on and on, you will especially love this movie just for the background and the references. The movie isn't bad either. I like it better than the new one, sorry what's your name.
the best.......2007-08-17
This is so much better than the remakes. Only fault would be wish they had stayed more with the book.
Top of the line movie.......2007-08-16
It's incredible to think when this story aired in radio format, our country was so innocent people actually believed this was happening and went into a panic. But wow, what a story! It's a classic, which means nowadays we look at the story line, special effects, acting, etc. and giggle a bit, but it's so much fun you can't help but love it. I mean who can hate a space ship with a "seeing eye" that looks like a street lamp, and of course the alien itself with those long, super skinny arms, super long fingers (and only 3 of them, mind you) and the floppy hand resting on the lovely ladys shoulder? Fun stuff all around - you should have this for your collection!
Excellent Work of Science Fiction.......2007-07-28
This is one of my favorite science fiction films; in my opinion superior to both Wells' novel and the 2005 film version. The special effects are quite good considering this movie was made in the early 1950's. The collector's edition DVD contains a number of special features the origional edition didn't contain.
Some reviews have complained about the religious angle the film takes (especially towards the end) but I thought it actually improved The War of the Worlds (people who have read the novel will quickly notice just how differently George Pal and H.G. Wells portrayed Christianity).
The War of the Worlds (1953).......2007-06-27
Based on the H.G Wells classic, "War" helped feed the public's lurid fascination with the possibility of world annihilation, with a Martian invasion standing in for nuclear attack. "Worlds" is capably directed, the cast clicks, Technicolor adds vibrancy to the picture. And George Pal's Oscar-winning special effects still work their destructive magic. Even today, this sci-fi classic remains harrowing and unforgettable, though it's a smaller, humbler version of Spielberg's behemoth remake.

The controversial, Reagan-era invasion of Grenada by U.S. troops is, oddly enough, at the center of this initially interesting story of a seasoned Marine sergeant (Clint Eastwood) routinely insulted by younger officers for being a symbol of the war that America "lost" in Vietnam. Looking for both a victory and a little redemption, Eastwood's character trains a squadron of scrappy pups and turns them into fighting grunts, just in time to follow White House orders and take the little island. Marsha Mason plays Eastwood's love interest, and Mario Van Peebles is funny as an undisciplined con artist who joins Clint's men and finally catches the spirit after getting his butt kicked a few times. --Tom Keogh
Description
After serving in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, Gunnery Sergeant Tom Highway finds himself with a collection of medals and no war to fight. Training a new group of Marines that are more green than mean, Highway complicates matters by attempting to reconcile with his former wife, Aggie. Rekindling the spark in his failed marriage won't be easy with a crisis brewing in Grenada and his pathetic platoon far from ready.

My product arrive as advertised by the seller in excellent condition. And the price was very reasonable.
Heartbreak Ridge.......2007-08-01
Being a military person myself, I must admit I've ran into a few people whom actually live like this... it's all they live for and most go overboard with it - so to see Gunny show some care for his troops was good. I love this movie for many reasons, Mario Van whatever is not one of them.
Clint Deserved a Promotion.......2007-07-20
Clint Eastwood's "Heartbreak Ridge" is an outstanding movie that was actually ahead of its time in giving us insight into how much one has to sacrifice when completing a career in the military. The movie is set in 1983, and Eastwood plays a grizzled gunnery sergeant in the USMC. He's been in just about every conflict since the battle on the frozen hill of Korea, from which the title is taken. It's a pretty typical military movie, with veteran Clint taking a bunch of low performing gyrines and whipping them into a top-notch unit. The characters are well cast, espeically the commanding officer, who gets his just desserts in a one-on-one faceoff with Eastwood. The subplot, detailing Eastwood's failed marriage to gorgeous Marsha Mason is perfectly handled as well. You can't help rooting for Clint and her to get back together, but the relationship is handled in very adult manner, leaving that question unanswered untilthe final sequence. The climax, set against the backdrop of the Granada invasion, reminds us all of the high risks our soldiers take to every day keep us all free. It also marks the transitionary phase toward increased professionalism our military was going through during the years of neglect after the fall of Saigon. As a vet who served during that time, I felt especially vindicated when I first saw this movie back when it was released in the theaters. Although I suspect it never got its due from the critics, it's a classic and can be enjoyed over and over. Great job, Clint.
Clint Eastwood & the old breed of Marines.......2007-05-13
This is a wonderful movie...showing the difference between the "old breed" and "new breed" of marines. I have seen this MANY times. I know some of the quotes by heart, and started using one of them from time to time.
Excellent Movie.......2007-01-15
I bought this for my brother because he wanted it. We ended up watching it and I was really pulled into this movie. This is not your typical war movie, but more about how Clint transforms a bunch of poor soldiers into fighting men. A fine movie!

A mysterious, pilotless plane carries scientist Rex Reason to a colony of America's best and brightest minds. They've been kidnapped by a dying alien race, the Metalunians, to repair their defense shield before their enemies destroy their world completely, toiling under their spying eyes and futuristic security cameras (two-way TVs that dominate every room). Jeff Morrow, under a raised forehead, bronze tan, and snow-white hair, philosophizes as Exeter, the thoughtful Metalunian torn between his duty and his morals as he forces the plucky humans to labor in his race's defense. The moody mystery of the first half turns to pure pulp adventure when the humans are transported across the galaxy to the battle-scarred world of Metaluna, under the threatening watch of a monstrous bug-eyed monster with a giant brain for a head and massive claws for hands. There's a genuine sense of wonder to Joseph Newman's intergalactic adventure, one of the most ambitious science fiction films of the 1950s. The story is simple space opera, but the futuristic designs of glass and metal, the marvelous alien makeup, and grandstanding special effects invest the film with a Technicolor splendor. Faith Domergue co-stars as a nuclear physicist and Gilligan's Island's Russell Johnson makes his first professorial appearance as a scientist. Science fiction auteur Jack Arnold was an unbilled codirector. --Sean Axmaker

this island earth, abandon ship!.......2007-09-10
One of the most famous sf films of all time, is also one of the most annoying and over rated. The writing is full of impending malevolence, the acting wooden and direction ordinary. I bought this dvd because I hadn't seen the movie in over 25 years, but it turns out only that I can now see it in colour for the first time. The lack of any extra features is indicative of the entire package.
This Island Earth - A Wow of a film........2007-08-14
This movie might not be of the calibre of 'The Day the Earth Stood Still', but it is certainly part of the canon of great sci-fi movies of the 20th century. The digital transfer has been wonderful (I lived off a VHS copy for 15 years), and it allowed a detail more reminiscent of its first release. To say that this movie was one i had waited for is an understatement - to say that it gives contemporary films a run for their money, is to state the obvious. A sign of the times is, I would have loved to see more extra features (like who is Rex Reason, and what about the color of the Metallunan's back on their home world?).
Campy , Saturday matinee feature from the fifties.......2007-07-25
Bug eyed monsters, mysterious aliens ,sexy scientists and catchy special effects, What's not to like ? The pace is slow and the acting wooden , to say the least. The professsor from Gilligan's Island is here and he gets zapped by a green death ray. One scientist has a heaving bosom and another a chiseled lantern jaw. The alien guru has a tremendous forehead. There's a visit to another world in the middle of a centuries old war being fought with flaming meteors. There's some sort of moral message here , but I forgot what it was. Never mind. Just get the movie, nuke some popcorn, kick back and relax. It's high camp all the way.
Earth is my kind of Island, I like the atmosphere........2007-07-10
This delightful and very fifties film,is to me the epitome of fifties Sci-fi.
Uncommonly for a Sci-fi film from this era it's in vibrant colour,and really makes the most out of it.
A simple storyline,competent actors,and most refreshingly of all no CGI.
I'm not totally against CGI as long as it's used in moderation,but personally I prefer a good detailed model,well lit.
~~Synopsis~~
One day electronic expert Dr Cal Meacham is sent some unusual components through the post,his curiosity is aroused even more when a book arrives showing him how to build an Alien device using the components.
This is the start of an adventure that leads to another planet,an interplanetary war,and a possible invasion of Earth.
~~~~
I found the remote controlled DC-3 aircraft an intriguing idea for 1955.
This is a film for all fifties science fiction connoisseur's.
Based on the novel by Raymond F Jones.
(Modern Sci-fi movies could learn a lot about pacing, from these 50's classic's.)
Special-effects legend Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion talents and "Dynamation" (rear-projection) process are the highlights of the '50s-era creature feature 20 Million Miles to Earth. An American spaceship returns to Earth after a mission to Venus and crashes into the sea near Sicily. A sole survivor (William Hopper) is rescued, along with a specimen that quickly grows into a reptilian biped called the Ymir. The being eventually grows to 20 feet high and escapes its confines, whereupon it rampages through Rome before a showdown with the military. Despite lacking much of a personality, the Ymir is a marvelous showcase for Harryhausen's skills. Unfortunately, the rest of the film does not match his level of excellence; direction by Nathan Juran is perfunctory (his later collaborations with Harryhausen, including The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, are more lively), and performances and scripting are flat. Still, Harryhausen fans should enjoy this opportunity to see this phase of his career before he created his most enduring works. --Paul Gaita
Product Description
Special effects genius Ray Harryhausen (Jason and the Argonauts, Clash of the Titans)brings you one of his earliest groundbreaking films, now available for the first time in vibrant color! When an American spaceship crash-lands off the coast of Sicily, a rescue team discovers that the crew has brought back a gelatinous mass that soon hatches and evolves into a strange bi-ped creature which increases in size rapidly. Soon 20-feet tall, the creature rampages through Rome before being destroyed as it seeks refuge in the Colosseum.
Customer Reviews:
Deluxe treatment of a beloved Harryhausen classic.......2007-09-15
Although not as impressive as his later, more popular films, Ray Harryhausen's work on 20 Million Miles to Earth is still marvelous entertainment. And now, here comes a super-deluxe package of not only the film, but a wealth of supplemental material for fans to enjoy.
But first, let's get this "colorization" business out of the way. I've never understood some people's disdain for black & white movies. And I think 20 Million looked just fine in its original form. Having said that, it's important to realize that Harryhausen himself participated in the process, so it has his full approval. In fact, in the 20-minute documentary on Disc 2, Harryhausen states he would have made ALL his Columbia pictures of the fifties in color if he'd been given the budget. So, even though I'm a purist at heart, it doesn't really bother me that the film has been colorized. As for the result, the color looks no better or worse than other films of the same era that were filmed in color. And the disc gives you the options of viewing the film in its original black & white.
The master himself comes off sharp as a tack in the various interview segments. It's amazing that this man, well into his eighties, has such vivid recollections of films he made over 50 years ago. Director Tim Burton sits down with Harryhausen and shows how much of a fan he (Burton) himself is, asking questions we all would ask if we had the same opportunity. Other filmmakers such as Terry Gilliam and Rick Baker offer their experiences with Ray's films as well. Burton and Gilliam, directors known for their visual styles, point out that the films' still-impressive special effects often overshadowed the limited acting abilities of their stars. Actress Joan Taylor (who starred in 20 Million and Earth vs. the Flying Saucers) also has fond memories of the films, and looks great for a woman in her seventies.
Rounding out the extra features are a gallery of ad artwork, one of Harryhausen's original sketches, a comic book teaser "20 Million Miles More," and featurettes on the film's music and the colorization process. Curiously, the original theatrical trailer (which was included on Columbia's previous single-disc release) is omitted. In its place are trailer for "Labyrinth" and "The Dark Crystal."
I suspect die-hard fans will still be put-off by the colorization idea. However, this 2-disc set has so much more to offer, plus the aforementioned ability to view the film in its original form. It's definitely worth picking up.
Another Harryhausen Gem!.......2007-09-14
With very few exceptions, movies are considered the "property" of either
the director or the leading actor/actoress. Ray Harryhausen is one of
those few exceptions.
His master craftsmanship in the use of stop-motion photopgraphy as a special-effect propells Mr. Harryhausen far above anything produced
at a computer work-station, in as much as that he wasn't striving
for "realism" in his efforts; Mr. Harryhausen was just giving form to the
viewers' imagination while extending their 'suspension of disbelief'. The
Oscar he received for his work on "Jason and the Argonauts" was both well
earned and well deserved.
"20 Million Miles To Earth", as well as Mr. Harryhausen's earlier works,
doesn't have much of a plot, but quite frankly, it doesn't need one. His
special-effects are more than adequate to please the pallate of this genre's collector. To emphasise my point, when Mr.Harryhausen put as
much effort into the plot, as well as the special-effects, he earned his
*first* Oscar, for "Jason and the Argonauts".
"20 Million Miles To Earth" is another gem in the collective works of
Ray Harryhausen and a definite "must-have/get" for this genre's collector.
Quick fix for the technical problem.......2007-09-05
Several customers have complained that the angle toggle icon remains on screen for the duration of the movie. This is not a feature of the disc itself. It's a feature of your DVD player, and it can be disabled. Normally you do this by accessing the Setup menu of your player, then switching the "Angle Icon" function to the "Off" setting. (Consult your DVD player's manual for details.) Incidentally, even with the icon no longer visible, you can still toggle between the B&W and color versions of the film by pressing the Angle button on your remote.
Now, what about the movie itself? I always liked it a lot in its original black and white, and was skeptical about a colorized version. But the colors are really terrific - vivid blues and greens, fairly natural skin tones, and decent texture and detail. Colorization has come a long way. For the most part, you may not even realize that the film is colorized, although there are occasional giveaways if you look hard enough.
I'm surprised to say that I like "20 Million" even better in color than I did in B&W. The turquouise Mediterranean skies and colorful Italian backdrops add variety to the film. The action sequences are more spectacular. (For instance, the scene where the Ymir emerges from the Tiber is far more effective in color, and the battle with the elephant works better too.) The night sequences benefit the least from colorizing, but aren't harmed by it. The fact that Ray Harryhausen gave his imprimatur to this release lends it added credibility.
Overall, I'm very happy with this disc, and I hope other B&W sci-fi/fantasy films from the '50s are given the same high-quality treatment. (If you're still undecided, clips of "20 Million" are available for preview on the Sony website.)
Nineteen thirty-nine is often proposed as the movies' halcyon year, and three reasons why were directed by John Ford: Stagecoach, Young Mr. Lincoln, and Drums Along the Mohawk. In that exalted company Drums... would have to be accounted "merely superb"--even if it's the best film ever made about the American Revolution and, oh, only about eighth-best picture of its year.
Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert play newlyweds in New York's Mohawk Valley at the time of the Revolutionary War. That war is more a distant rumor than a direct concern of people with cabins to raise, crops to harvest, and firstborn on the way. When it comes to their valley, in the form of hitherto-peaceable Indians whipped up by a gaunt Tory with an eyepatch (John Carradine), life changes as though with the passing of a cloud shadow.
In this, his first color film, Ford created indelible images of the dawning of America: a lone wagon making its way through acres of long grass rippling in the wind; the Indians, at the onset of their first raid, seeming to materialize out of the mist, out of the very trunks of trees; a ragged line of farmers with flintlocks passing along a split-rail fence, then resolving into a column, an army, marching toward a distant horizon. (Utah's Wasatch mountain country stands in persuasively for upstate New York in pioneer days.) Edna May Oliver scored a best-supporting-actress Oscar nomination as a memorably crusty frontier widow, while Ward Bond--oddly omitted from the opening credits--claimed a place of honor in the John Ford Stock Company playing Fonda's best friend. --Richard T. Jameson
Description
Lawless frontier. Indian attacks. Settlers protecting themselves the only way they know how-with guns and courage. In the years before the Revolutionary War, the East was as wild as the West would be one hundred years later. Henry Fonda delivers one of his most memorable performances ever as a young frontier leader protecting his family in the backwoods of New York state. Claudette Colbert so-stars as his spirited wife. With a fine supporting cast that also includes Edna May Oliver and John Carradine, this is one of John Ford's most exciting historical dramas.
Pioneering Eastern USA.......2007-09-11
This movie endures well, partly because it is historical, and therefore not subject to obsolescence, other than technical obsolescence - due to changes in filming techniques. These are not significant.
In its day, "Drums Along the Mohawk" was Academy Award material. Perhaps it would still be so.
I get caught in the drama, the danger, the excitement and the unbelievable hardships of the pioneers, especially the women. This movie tends to bring out all of those aspects of pioneer life, and because I am drawn in, I get a strong feeling of participation, even though I am sure I don't have the heart to be a true pioneer.
Good Movie This!!!.......2007-09-07
Educational, exciting, this one has it all!! Classic Henry Fonda, good supporting actors, lots of action...there was no FEMA to pull your fat out of the fire, this is a movie about self-reliance, hard work, and the will to live in the New World. Well done!
Lovin Henry Fonda.......2007-08-23
Well, being a great fan of Mr.Fonda since I was very young, it was great to get one of his older movies to watch on DVD.
Drums is a typically well done John Ford story with all the story sidebars and characters you can later regognize as the Ford "people", even a rather young Ward Bond.
This movie was based on a book of the same title, and is good enough to make you want to read the book, just like the movie versoin of "The Grapes of Wrath" does.
Neglected gem!...one of John Ford's finest films..........2007-08-05
1939 was a banner year for great films--and certainly one of them was "Drums Along the Mohawk" in gorgeous early technicolor about a period in history not often used as the subject of a major film. Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert are fine as a young couple in the years before the Revolutionary War settling in the backwoods of New York state. The hardships of pioneer life are made even tougher by the presence of Indians on the warpath, the only refuge being a nearby fort where men, women and children find some protection.
Brilliantly photographed with lots of action scenes that bring the film vividly to life under John Ford's direction. John Carradine makes an excellent villain and Edna May Oliver gives another one of her priceless performances as an elderly widow who forms a strong attachment to the young couple. An unforgettable scene has Indians raiding her home while she refuses to budge from her bed even though they set fire to it. Scenes of Indian cruelty and torture are also present--but altogether a moving film well worth viewing to see what frontier life must have been like way back then.
Sentimental at times--but also harsh and realistic. Most memorable scene: Fonda pursued by Indians for a long chase over woodlands, finally wearing out his pursuers who collapse from sheer exhaustion. Thrilling chase!
A Rare Revolutionary War Classic.......2007-06-09
There are relatively few really good films pertaining to the Revolutionary War era, and this is one of the very best. It is a very fast-moving story of a young newlywed couple (Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert) who move from the comfort of the city to the rustic and eminently dangerous 1770s upstate New York, in the Mohawk Valley, where the settlers continually battle the elements and the Indians, who fight the colonists as the proxies of the British. The film will definitely hold the viewer's interest as the couple, their community, and the young nation battle to survive. An outstanding film, on the same level as "Sergeant York!"
Kirk Douglas produced the trendsetting barbarian epic The Vikings and took the showiest, most aggressive role: lusty Viking prince Einar, the "only son in wedlock" of King Ragnar (a cackling, wild-eyed Ernest Borgnine). With jagged scars down his face and a milky-white blind eye that almost glows in his skull, Douglas has a rowdy time battling defiant slave Tony Curtis (the long-lost heir to the British throne) for the hand of the beautiful princess Janet Leigh. It's pure Hollywood hokum, sure, but spectacular hokum: the great cinematographer Jack Cardiff turns his Norway locations into a lush Valhalla on earth. Faced with an absurd story, journeyman director Richard Fleischer goes for the gusto in brawling Viking parties, furious sieges, and clanging broadsword battles. An enormous hit, the film spawned a huge wave of Viking movies, some perhaps smarter but none as much fun. --Sean Axmaker
Description
Hollywood legends Kirk Douglas, Tony Curtis, Ernest Borgnine and Janet Leigh dazzle in this epic chronicle of brutal rivalry and bloodthirsty ambition. Roaring through the 9th century with powerful performances and "brilliant visual drama" (Cue), The Vikings is a riveting "spectacle of have-at-'em action" (Los Angeles Examiner)! Bitter hatred divides two brothers. Prince Einar (Douglas) is the son and heir of a savage Viking chieftain. Prince Eric (Curtis) is his unknowing half-brother, the bastard offspring of Einar's father and an English queen. When the Vikings kidnap a princess (Leigh), her beauty inflames the desires of both men, forcing a bloody duel thatdecides their fate and the future of the English throne.
Odin would want you to enjoy this Viking adventure.......2007-09-12
This 1958 adventure period piece features big names (Kirk Douglas as Einar, Tony Curtis as Eric, Ernest Borgnine as Ragnar, and Janet Leigh as Morgana) is based upon a book, The Viking by Edison Marshall. In a way, the story was just a good Hollywood vehicle to make a fun, high-action adventure film that was not set during World War Two, the Wild West, ancient Rome or ancient Egypt.
Story: In the opening scene, the Viking chieftain Ragnar raids a small English kingdom, kills the King, and rapes Queen Enid (Maxine Audley), who hides her resulting pregnancy. With no direct heir, the kingship passes to the sneering, haughty Aella (Frank Thring), who allows Enid to live. When Enid secretly gives birth, the baby is sent off into exile, safe from the jealous King Aella.
Years later, Aella arranges a political marriage to the beautiful young Princess of Wales, Morgana (Janet Leigh). He also banishes one of his lords (James Donald as Lord Egbert) out of suspicion that Egbert is collaborating with Viking raiders, in exchange for the Vikings ignoring Egbert's domain. Aella is actually right, but Egbert escapes, and seeks refuge with Ragnar, who is now a Viking king, and Ragnar's son, Einar. In a convoluted, and somewhat forced plot, Einar and Egbert go to kidnap Morgana, before she marries Aella. This leads to lots of fighting with swords, spears, bows, and arrows. And, there is a lot of yelling (Odin!). Einar (Kirk Douglas) and the slave Eric (Tony Curtis) both fall in love with Morgana, and despise each other. Several main characters end up dead, one loses an eye, one loses a hand, and the wolves gets some choice food.
There are some definite flaws in the film. I have already mentioned that the plot seems contrived and forced at times. In addition, during the big sword fights, you can tell, from the sounds, that some of the swords are quite fake. There is also a scene, where the Vikings are storming Aella's castle, wherein a Viking shoots an arrow up at an English defender, and the arrow ends up going horizontal and sideways through the Englishman's throat. And, when the Vikings go to make their big move on Aella, you only see three longboats crossing, yet an awful lot of Vikings end up on the English shores. The fights seems are not well-orchestrated, with the Vikings looking disorganized and the Brits looking hapless.
While I like Tony Curtis in many of his roles (e.g., Operation Petticoat), he never seemed to fit here. He did not speak or act like an angry slave. While Janet Leigh made a beautiful Morgana, she also seemed stiff and out of place. I think she is much better at portraying a city girl.
But, I gave this film four stars. Why? Well, both Kirk Douglas and Ernest Borgnine look like their having the time of their lives portraying father-and-son barbarians. Douglas's performance reminds me of how Johnny Depp immersed himself in the Captain Jack Sparrow character of Pirates of the Caribbean. Kirk Douglas looks like he started off with the attitude of "Let's see how much fun I can have being Einar the Viking!" Borgnine was not far behind.
There are not many different locales used in this film: Aella's castle, boats at sea, and a fjord in Norway, with a Viking village. Despite the lack of variety, the beauty of that fjord gives us some truly stunning shots. I also enjoyed the glimpse we got into the Viking way of life, especially as it might have even had some bits and pieces of accuracy to it.
By the way, I have not read the book upon which this movie is based, but I have read a few versions of this tale. So far, the best variation that I have found is Harry Harrison's alternate history fantasy, collectively known as "Warriors of the Way", and individually known as One King's Way (Hammer and the Cross) and King and Emperor (Hammer and the Cross).
The Vikings: A Classic Movie.......2007-08-11
great action. beautifull scenery. well thought out script. this movie will get your heart beating faster. the soundtrack is worth the price of the purchase.one of the top ten movies ever made.
the crude shlock that Hollywood does best: great entertainment fun.......2007-07-28
If you are looking for an accurate historical film to stimulate a young critical imagintaion, this is definitely not it. However, if you want a very fun swashbuckler with good characters and fine raucous acting, this is as good as it gets. You get some glimmerings of history, but mostly just a good, if rather preposterous, tall tale. When I turn to Hollywood, this is frankly what I hope to find - it is still frsh and lively, it won't strain your mind, and is fast paced and consistently exciting. I am glad a bought it and my kids will love it.
Recommended.
This is a good movie, a different kind. Both Tony Curtis and Kirk Douglas made very good looking vikings! It is quite watchable. I only wish there had been more sword fighting.
