The plot of Nostradamus has something to do with a demonic cult of time-traveling monks trying to instigate the apocalypse. But fortunately, the filmmakers don't spend a lot of time trying to make this seem eerie or soul-threatening. Instead, they go for sheer propulsive storytelling, and the result is surprisingly entertaining. Minneapolis detective Mike Nostrand (Rob Estes) begins investigating cases of apparent spontaneous combustion and discovers that they've been induced by chanting demons from the 16th century. He has a hard time swallowing this, despite the conviction of FBI psychic Lucy (Joely Fisher, decked out in miniskirts, push-up bras, and leather jackets). But when he puts on a ring connected to a time-traveling device, he suddenly finds himself in medieval France (where, fortunately, everyone speaks English). According to prophecy, he's Nostradamus, come to save the world! It's all pretty silly, but the script is efficient enough to keep everything moving. Estes and Fisher are pleasant and deliver their dialogue with straight faces. At the end, Nostradamus feels like a pilot for a time-traveling X-Files. Though Estes has some unfortunate "medieval" facial hair, it might make for an amusing series. Fans of Xena and Hercules might also find it up their alley. --Bret Fetzer

Good Movie About Nostradamus. Fiction/NON DOCOUMENTARY.......2006-03-19
It's FICTION.....But A Really Good Action/Adventure Story..Definately Not Boring at all...I Really enjoyed watching it.
Why is it called Nostradamus?.......2005-03-27
I've seen this movie on the Sci-Fi channel, I stopped to see it because I was interested in Nostradamus. However, it has apparently nothing to do with him, except on some scenes. This movie is confusing a terribly compiled. It doesn't give any type of information whatsoever about this great prophet. It's not worth buying...not at all.
MURKY CRYSTAL BALL.......2004-11-12
Not knowing much about the history of this movie, it seems like it might have been a pilot for a tv series? At any rate, NOSTRADAMUS benefits from sharp performances from Rob Estes and Joely Fisher, and some good pacing. Estes plays a detective who apparently is the real 16th century prognosticator, Nostradamus. Although it's never really explained in full, it makes for some interesting plot twists. The special fx aren't all that special, but the movie keeps your interest by throwing many different plausibilities at you. The ending is definitely open for a sequel or a series, hard to tell which!!
This movie SUCKS!.......2004-07-09
This is the worst movie ever made. It has the worst script, actors, and every other bad movie element. It is total CRAP!
Best movie ever made!!.......2004-07-08
Nostradamus is a thrilling tale, that has an ideal plot and a very interesting plot. It is really good and deserves a lot of credit.

An informative look at the life of the Prophet of Doom.......2004-08-05
Almost everyone has heard of Nostradamus' prophecies, but many know nothing about the actual life of the man. This video spends a good twenty-five minutes on the life story of the 16th century seer before it gets into the subjects of the prophecies themselves. Nostradamus was a fascinating man, exhibiting special qualities even as a child. His grandfather took him under his wing and taught him many things that helped prepare him for his life as a medical doctor. I learned one very surprising fact: the first and foremost subject that doctors had to learn in that era was astrology, as they based much of their diagnoses and remedies on the patient's horoscope. Nostradamus was a man ahead of his time even in medicine, as he apparently insisted on cleanliness, refused to use bloodletting as a remedy, and enjoyed much success with his own lozenge of special herbs. The plague was devastating all of Europe in those days, but Nostradamus never contracted the disease himself. The Black Death did claim his wife and children, however, while Nostradamus was away helping treat others elsewhere in Europe.
After the loss of his family and the arrival of news that the Inquisition would like to speak to him, Nostradamus embarked on a wanderlust journey of Europe, during which time he seems to have taken a great interest in divination. The video describes how he supposedly invoked his visions in a secret room of his house; he would, it is said, actually travel in some form to the future and unconsciously write down his predictions while in a trance. He had to be careful, though, as the Inquisition was poised and ready to leap upon anyone with unorthodox ideas, and this is the reason his famous quatrains incorporated all sorts of anagrams and tricky little words and phrases. His fame as a seer grew, and no less than the queen of France herself called upon him for specialized predictions as to the future of her children. One of the quatrains seemed to predict the death of Henry II, and when that prediction came true, a mob wanted to burn Nostradamus as some sort of warlock - luckily, the queen's influence kept him safe.
A number of the quatrains are read to us and accompanied with visual images of the events and individuals they supposedly predicted: the French Revolution, the destructive reigns of Napoleon and Hitler, the assassination of John and Robert Kennedy, man's trip to the moon, the Gulf War, the Challenger explosion, and the list goes on. The only problem I have with this video is the fact that the discussion of the prophecies is completely one-sided. Nostradamus' modern-day supporters marvel at the seer's extraordinary future vision and make a very big deal out of the details he seemed to hit right on the money. There is no real discussion of the validity of the prophecies. Normally, since this is a biographical presentation, I would not expect to see skeptics included in the program. The fact that the video seems to make a big deal out of the accuracy of the predictions, however, seems to necessitate an opposing viewpoint. There is no reference to the skeptics who talk about how vague the quatrains are and explain how different translations and interpretations of the quatrains lead to different conclusions. In its place, all we get is the weakest of explanations for those prophecies that did not prove true - the prophecies showed what would happen if man's course did not change, so obviously man managed to avoid certain of the fates foreseen by Nostradamus. This video gives the impression that Nostradamus was indeed a true prophet who saw the future with incredible accuracy; many people, including myself, do not embrace such a concept, and I think this video would have benefited greatly from the inclusion of at least one Nostradamus skeptic into the discussion.
Biographical Sketch of a man whose life could fill an epic.......2002-04-06
A&E's Biography(long before it was trendy) produced this VHS entitled Nostradamus: Prophet of Doom. As with most programming that A&E produces, this video is high quality. My only quabble is that the video, while providing much background about Nostradamus' early childhood and influences, does not focus on enough of the chilling predictions that he would become famous for. The prophecies that are mentioned are indeed scary, especially how precise Nostradamus was approaching time periods, places, and even peoples names. For instance, Nostradamus predicted the rise of a leader in Germany who would rally his people with passionate speeches and take the land of Poland. I mean what more proof do you need. What was very interesting was the explanations of how Nostradamus actually used some type of brass triangle, a goblet of water and a branch to actually "see" the future by becoming entranced with the rippling of the water. This is really entralling viewing but again the total running time of the video is 50 minutes. Now with the tragedies of 9/11/01 and another of Nostradamus' predictions coming true, A&E should revisit the topic, update, and expand. Recommended.
THE SEER OF CATASTROPHE.......2002-01-16
Join in with scholars and writers who discuss a man's visions that unfolded in the future. Nostradamus is a name well known for his fatal prophecies but little is known about him. Biography takes us through a journey of this man's life and the impact that his words had on future generations.
You will be surprised to find that Michael Notre Dame was the descendent of forced Jewish converts. He grew up learning about astrology, magic and the sources of Kabballah. All of these teachings lead him to become a reknowned medieval physician. The question then arises, what happened to him that he was able to foretell future catastrophes? Biography does an adequate job in its attempt in answering this question.
Throughout the film you are shown the prophecies that he had foretold four centuries prior to their happening. Nostradamus was also under a cloud of suspicion but through his patronage with royalty, he was able to escape the cross examinations of the inquisitors.
This film is informative about a person whose name is well known but whose life and work are a mystery. Should we believe that his prophecies came true or are they a result of our imagination? All of the scholars interviewed says Nostradamus was highly accurate. It would have been good to have another point of view regarding his life and work for us to make a sound judgement. Overall this is a fairly good video to entice you to learn more about this man.

3rd rate documentary.......2004-05-28
Avoid this poorly made documentary. In 1981 Warner Brother released a film produced by David L. Wolper staring Orson Welles called, "The Man Who Saw Tomorrow." Unfortunately this film is not available on DVD and in currently out of print on VHS. "Nostradamus: His Life and Prophecies" is a dubbed and edited version of, "The Man Who Saw Tomorrow." Orson Welles has been removed. The footage by David L. Wolper has also been removed. The moody and spooky atmosphere is gone. What a pity! To make matters worse the producers of this DVD used a poor quality copy of, "The Man Who Saw Tomorrow" the color is faded and the picture is out of focus. Track down and buy, "The Man Who Saw Tomorrow" it's worth it.
Double documentary...........2002-03-05
This disc contains two documentaries:- The first is a 58 minute 1994 documentary on Nostradamus himself and interpretations of his prophecies, containing various quality newsreel footages of his 'hits and misses'. The second documentary is from The Nine channel Australia and lasts a very interesting 87 minutes, with an excellant commentary on prophets and visionaries over the past few centuries and their "insights, predictions, warnings and hopes for the future". Both are very engrossing and entertaining, and are an excellant addition to any video documntary library. I gave four stars as the Nostradamus video picture quality is somewhat lacking - although the material covered more than makes up for this.

Worst Audio EVER!!!.......2005-07-16
There is nothing much to say about this $3 budget dvd. Worst audio. Can't hear it half the time. Nothing more o say. Don't waste your money.

Gambled and LOST!.......2007-04-08
This has got to be THE WORST excuse for a documentary I have EVER come across. This DVD left me feeling that not only did I waste money buying it, but it was a waste of time to even watch it. This amateurish production looked like a bad effort produced with off the shelf software on someone's computer. The footage was nothing more than rip-offs of news footage, documentaries and home videos. Don't be fooled by the "As Seen on TV" marking on the cover. I am POSITIVE that this "program" NEVER was seen on anyone's TV except the hacks that produced it and the fools (like me) who bought it. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THIS DVD. Don't bother, it sucks!!!!.......2006-10-26
The worst documentary on Nostradamus we have ever seen. The acting by the presenter is horrible and the rest of it is just plain stupid. It doesn't really give you any good information on Nostradamus's predictions and none of his predictions for the future.
Our recommendation, Pass on this one!
disappointed.......2003-01-26
It is a good program if you would like to know about Nostradamus but it wasn't what I expected. I had expected more detail about his prophecies but they were not dwelt on as much as his life was. That was okay. Alot of info I did not know about him. Again, Not what I expected but still a biography movie.
Nostradamus: Spelled Backwards...........2001-09-24
I'm sure if spelled backwards and translated from some language nobody knows.... it means something? This is Nostradamus in a nutshell. Old scriptures were and always be unclear, but folks just love to twist words around and conclude something strange, odd, fascinating, or compelling. It is very sad and pathetic that this particular DVD has skyrocketed in sales. ...one cannot be surprised..... Many are confused and hurt, we are all hurting. To find the answers to the future, there are other alternatives. God Bless all true Heroes
God Bless the USA
Good but not outstanding.......1999-10-11
This DVD doesn't take full advantage of the picture quality available to the format. I do like the recreations, and you have the advantage of being able to look at it when you want instead of waiting for cable channels to play it.
The graphics are decent although you can tell its a transfer from tape. The trivia quiz doesn't give a final score and it isn't very long. Despite these shortcomings, it's a great buy. If you're building your library right now as I am, this makes a great addition.
Interesting and amazing........1999-06-25
This video summarize Nostradamus' poems and predictions. You've read or heard most of the cases before, but they're up to date more than ever. See what happens at the end of 1999....!
It's worth seeing.
