5 out of 5 stars The neatest sci-fi of the 60s.......2007-09-16

I first saw this movie in a theatre as part of double sci-fi (the other movie was the time portal which has been renamed the time travelers) and it caught my attention and it has never left. One of the best sci-fi's ever.

1 out of 5 stars Deaf and hard of hearing people once again frozen out of classic cinema.......2007-09-12

What, no closed captions or English subtitles? For forty bucks, you'd think Paramount/Criterion could afford to make this accessible to the millions of us with hearing impairment.

I saw this film in the theater upon its original release, but it pretty much went by me because of my deafness. I had looked forward to seeing it again, but I'm disappointed to find that even 43 years later, I'm still not going to be able to understand the dialogue (or monologue).

I'd like to give it 4-5 stars based on others' reviews, but as long as Paramount doesn't give a damn about people like me, it's going to have to get a low rating.

3 out of 5 stars courage in hopeless circumstances.......2007-08-23

An astronaut searches for food and water after an orbital mission to Mars crashes on the surface of the planet. Obviously low budget 60s sci-fi rises above the B-grade norm with sympathetic main performance, good pace and signs of intellect in plot.

5 out of 5 stars Science in science fiction.......2007-08-12

Robinson Crusoe put the science in science fiction. There are no "noisey" ships or explosions in a vacuum. Our hero uses telecourses and video before compact portable video cameras were invented. He uses true American ingenuity to design a clock, find oxygen, and remain safe until he is taken back home. This film is truly different than science fantasies like E.T. or Star Wars. The score is magnificent and thrilling. And, best of all, it shows what all kids in the sixties knew--the conquest of space could easily be done with World War II surplus equipment.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful film for all ages.......2007-08-10

Count me in with the rest of the gang waiting rabidly for this release. I saw this film several times as a child and was totally engrossed in the idea of a trip to Mars and the adventure it could bring. That adventure is grandly represented by this wonderful film, which allowing for a few flaws in the plot, does at least attempt to present the story with some scientific merit and plausible ideas.

The cinematography is excellent! The stark, desolate landscape is both thrilling and chilling in it's magnificent but achingly isolated beauty. The lead actor, Paul Mantee, does a fine job of conveying the loneliness and edge of insanity mindset that comes from being in a situation of despair and solitude.

And best of all, you can watch this one with your kids, grandkids, spouse or preacher, for that matter. Good clean wholesome fun for all ages.

Highly recommended!

In the first and finest RoboCop movie, director Paul Verhoeven combined near-future science fiction with a keen sense of social satire--not to mention enough high-velocity violence to satisfy even the most voracious bloodlust. In Starship Troopers, Verhoeven and RoboCop cowriter Ed Neumeier take inspired cues from Robert Heinlein's classic sci-fi novel to create a special-effects extravaganza that functions on multiple levels of entertainment. The film might be called "Melrose Place in Space," with its youthful cast of handsome guys and gorgeous women who look like they've been recruited (and in some cases they were) from the cast of Beverly Hills 90210. Viewers might focus on the incredible, graphically intense action sequences (definitely not for children) in which heavily armed forces from Earth go to off-world battle against vast hordes of alien "bugs" bent on planetary conquest. The attacking bugs are marvels of state-of-the-art special-effects technology, and the space battles are nothing short of spectacular. But Starship Troopers is more than a showcase for high-tech hardware and gigantic, flesh-ripping insects. Recalling his childhood in Holland during the Nazi occupation, Verhoeven turns this epic adventure into a scathingly funny satire of fascist propaganda, emphasizing Heinlein's underlying warning against the hazards of military conformity and the sickening realities of war. It's an action-packed joy ride if that's all you're looking for, but Verhoeven has a provocative agenda that makes Starship Troopers as smart as it is exciting. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars A subtle satire of the novel.......2007-08-24

This film may in the end prove to be almost as controversial as the novel on which it was based. Robert Heinlein's novel, written in 1959, has been reviled as fascist propaganda, with its glorification of militarism. While Heinlein denied this, the world he depicts - a military elite holds political power, and wages war against enemies viewed as sub-human - bears an uncanny resemblance to Nazi Germany. The film sides with the novel's critics. Earth is portrayed as authoritarian, although not entirely totalitarian, while military leaders are portrayed as thugs. In contrast to the novel, war is depicted as brutal. The brave young soldiers who are inspired by civic duty do not achieve glory, but rather die in droves and end up as decomposing corpses. All in all, the film is a subtle satire of the novel.

3 out of 5 stars This time the Nazi win.......2007-08-15

The first time I saw this movie I was completely shocked. Were we supposed to cheer for these cute little Nazis? But I watched it again, and now with the Iraq war on my mind, I see that no we are not supposed to like them. At best they are puppets, at worst they are just blood thirsty frat boys. It is pretty obvious that the bugs have no control over the asteroids that are hurtling through space. It also pretty clear that if you want to kill off the bugs for whatever reason, it would be easier just to nuke the planets. But that would not achieve the goals which seem to be endless propaganda and an outlet for all that pent up hostility that seems to running rampant in this futuristic society. I really feel sorry for the bugs. So OK, I finally got it. I am afraid though that lots of folks don't get it though and think it is just a rolicking good time. That actually disturbs me more than seeing Doogie Howser channeling Mengele.

4 out of 5 stars "If Ya Haven't Seen It, Ya Prolly Should...".......2007-08-13

Another in a long line of movies I didn't expect to like, but liked a lot. Starship Troopers has the feel of the best of 1950's Saturday matinee sci-fi serials, updated for the 1990's. It is an interesting movie, has a good plot, has enough action to hold almost anyone's attention (in fact I'm informed Starship Troopers has more shots fired in its run-time than any film ever made...) and is enjoyable end-to-end. As someone told me and as I put in my title up there, if you haven't seen it, you probably should.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable movie, but is way off from the book........2007-08-01

I like this movie. You can't take it seriously though. It is extrememly corny in a lot of respects but is fun to watch. However it does not hold true to the book hardly at all. I would recommend watching the movie first, then read the book. If you do it the other way around you will probably hate the movie. The book is very good in the sense that it is a lot "darker" than the movie. It explains "Rico's" physical and mental torment during training, and in the life of a combat soldier. There is very little contact between both sexes in the book as opposed to the movie in which they all live and "shower" together. Neither the book or the movie are a waste of time. I recommend both definately.

3 out of 5 stars It stands alone its not Heinlein.......2007-07-31

While I am proud to see some of his books made into movies, myself as an avid Heinlein collector finds fault with the straying from the storyline.

As a standalone picture I enjoyed it, but it was not to me Heinlein's vision in the book he wrote. The focus on family was taken aside to focus on some girl, the focus of maturity was made to be a coming of age item and love interests.

Don't get me wrong I like the film, but it was not Robert Heinlein's book.

4 out of 5 stars Alien movies.......2007-01-10

Purchased for nostalgia sake. Parents used to drop me off w/ a girlfriend at the movie theater to see double features. We were only six. Could you imagine doing that today? I remember Moon women and other really bad missle to moon type movies. They're good for a Friday night giggle. These 4 CDs are well packaged and enjoyable to look at as well as play.

4 out of 5 stars A rocket blast from the golden past........2006-06-29

Forgive the rap. These movies, although not the eye-popping ilk of Earth Vs. The Flying Saucers, or War of the Worlds, or even Invaders From Mars, are still worthy additions to anyone's canon of what goes for classic science-fiction. Sure, the sets move when the actors bump them in Catwomen, and the so-called Brain is barely believable in Planet Arous, and the sets still move in Missile To The Moon, and the acting of The Day It Came To Earth has to be seen to be believed, but what is required here (as even in Star Wars) is a suspension of disbelief. It seems to me that as movies get more sophisticated with the special effects, there isn't as much of a challenge being demanded of with our imaginations. It's as if the work is being done for us. See these movies not for their flaws, but for the light and shadow of mystery that is still in each one---even if you have to look a little harder than Close Encounters of the Third Kind to find it . . .
