By following up their debut thriller Bound with the 1999 box-office smash The Matrix, the codirecting Wachowski brothers--Andy and Larry--annihilated any suggestion of a sophomore jinx, crafting one of the most exhilarating sci-fi/action movies of the 1990s. Set in the not too distant future in an insipid, characterless city, we find a young man named Neo (Keanu Reeves). A software techie by day and a computer hacker by night, he sits alone at home by his monitor, waiting for a sign, a signal--from what or whom he doesn't know--until one night, a mysterious woman named Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) seeks him out and introduces him to that faceless character he has been waiting for: Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne). A messiah of sorts, Morpheus presents Neo with the truth about his world by shedding light on the dark secrets that have troubled him for so long: "You've felt it your entire life, that there's something wrong with the world. You don't know what it is, but it's there, like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad." Ultimately, Morpheus illustrates to Neo what the Matrix is--a reality beyond reality that controls all of their lives, in a way that Neo can barely comprehend.

Neo thus embarks on an adventure that is both terrifying and enthralling. Pitted against an enemy that transcends human concepts of evil, Morpheus and his team must train Neo to believe that he is the chosen champion of their fight. With mind-boggling, technically innovative special effects and a thought-provoking script that owes a debt of inspiration to the legacy of cyberpunk fiction, this is much more than an out-and-out action yarn; it's a thinking man's journey into the realm of futuristic fantasy, a dreamscape full of eye candy that will satisfy sci-fi, kung fu, action, and adventure fans alike. Although the film is headlined by Reeves and Fishburne--who both turn in fine performances--much of the fun and excitement should be attributed to Moss, who flawlessly mixes vulnerability with immense strength, making other contemporary female heroines look timid by comparison. And if we were going to cast a vote for most dastardly movie villain of 1999, it would have to go to Hugo Weaving, who plays the feckless, semipsychotic Agent Smith with panache and edginess. As the film's box-office profits soared, the Wachowski brothers announced that The Matrix is merely the first chapter in a cinematically dazzling franchise--a chapter that is arguably superior to the other sci-fi smash of 1999 (you know... the one starring Jar Jar Binks). --Jeremy Storey

1 out of 5 stars Reeves killed it for me.......2007-09-05

I believe that if someone like Tom Cruise or Denzel Washington was the star then this would have been more compelling but Keanu Reeves is such a horrible actor and so painful to watch that it killed this movie for me.

Following it was difficult. The concept was good and Laurence Fishburne was fantastic but Reeves was as bad as he always is. Why does this man continue to get work...???

This is one of my favorite movies. The sequel's didn't come close. Keanu Reeves plays Neo who find out that the world we live in isn't what we think. The movie makes you think about the world we live in today.

Seen it in 1999 when it first debuted on the big screen. Couldn't take it out of my head for a week or so. Since then I rewatched it perhaps a dozen times or so. I know the dialogue, I know what happens next all the way to the end, but I still watch it.

This is escapism of the cleverest sort. Incredibly stylized, designed, almost perfect pacing, witty and yet simple symbolic dialogue...
After the first viewing I'd give it a perfect score. After subsequent viewings you feel that the action sequences really hold back some of the intellectual potential of this film.

However, the original ideas presented and the way in which they are presented is very very nice.

My one gripe with the plot... Why do machines need human bodies for energy? Their technical intelligence is much greater than humans' so why not just build fusion reactors?
It would be much more believable if the reason were that machines were conducting an experiment, investigation of human behavior, studying their creators in order to answer questions about their own existence. That purpose was also suggested in the sequels.

Despite the flaws I'm gonna stand by the first viewing. 5 stars

[as strange as it may sound I actually thought at the beginning that Morpheus and the rest are the bad guys and agents are good, with the whole "...he is considered by many authorities to be the most dangerous man alive..." line suggesting he's a terrorist or something of that kind. guess I'm really easy to brain wash LOL. I wasn't sure up to the 'choosing-a-pill/unplugging' sequence, why would a terrorist ask you to choose a stupid pill? LOL]

In Earth's dirty, dystopian future, one in which every person alive is kept in a dark, moist pod and fed misinformation (kind of like Manhattan, only the odors are less pungent), only one man can save us - and that man is Johnny Utah. Wait, no - Johnny Mnemonic. Hold on, that's not it. It's some kind of car name...uh, Horizon, um....Omni. Ram Charger - No, Neo. That's it. Neo. Led by the enterprising Morpheus, and the hot-erprising Trinity, Neo learns his fate from the Oracle, a corpulent, crusty, chain-smoking broad who is likely to put you off Oracles forever. What is the Matrix? It's a laugh-a-minute RiffTrax with Mike Nelson and Kevin Murphy, that's what.

Like this needs another review. This is one of the best SiFi movies ever produced and no one who claims to know SiFi should have missed it. If you have never seen it, then buy it. You do not need to rent this movie, as that would be a waste of money. Go straight to the counter and make the purchase. It is so overwhelming that you should put it on a shelf and only break it out on special occasions. This is the type of movie that sticks in your mind.

After scoring popular hits with When Worlds Collide and The War of the Worlds, special-effects pioneer George Pal returned to the visionary fiction of H.G. Wells to produce and direct this science-fiction classic from 1960. Wells's imaginative tale of time travel was published in 1895 and the movie is set in approximately the same period with Rod Taylor as a scientist whose magnificent time machine allows him to leap backward and forward in the annals of history. His adventures take him far into the future, where a meek and ineffectual race known as the Eloi have been forced to hide from the brutally monstrous Morlocks. As Taylor tests his daring invention, Oscar-winning special effects show us what the scientist sees: a cavalcade of sights and sounds as he races through time at varying speeds, from lava flows of ancient earth to the rise and fall of a towering future metropolis.

The movie's charm lies in its Victorian setting and the awe and wonder that carries over from Wells's classic story. The pioneering spirit of the movie is still enthralling, but it gets a bit silly when Taylor turns into a stock hero, rescuing a beautiful blonde Eloi (Yvette Mimieux) and battling with the chubby green Morlocks whose light-bulb eyes blink out when they die. Although it's quaint when compared to the special-effects marvels of the digital age, the movie's still highly entertaining and filled with a timeless sense of wonder. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2007-08-26

This was one of the scariest movies I had seen up until it came out in the 1960s as a child terrified that the A-bomb was going to drop any time I heard a fire alarm. When the Time Traveler gets to 1964 and the air raid sirens are going off, that was it for me. The movie was turned off! I didn't see it in its entirety until several years later and I outgrew (mostly) that fear. I even got a copy of the book and read (most all of) it, for it, too, is a chilling tale of "what if." I happened to watch the 2002 remake last night and it was OK, and entertaining. It definitely has flashier special effects. (How is it that Guy Pearce can outrun those CGI speed-induced Morlocks?) Still, this one with Rod Taylor and Yvette Mimieux is the granddaddy. It won't disappoint.

A timeless classic! Just purchase now! Plus there is a wonderful 2nd sequence between Philby and George after George comes back from the future again!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awesome!!!.......2007-04-08

George Pal's The Time Machine is one of THE great sci fi films. Forget the dumb remake, which totally botches the story. This is about as good as it gets fellow sci fi fans. In this film, a Victorian gentleman visits a hippy commune in the distant future and teaches them how to be men. (Of course that's not the real synopsis, but it fits!)I will not here start expounding on all that's great about this film. There's too much and the review would be too long. I will however say that this is one of my favorite films, has one of my favorite soundtracks, and has one of my all-time favorite main characters/protagonists. Too many sci fi films focus on a future that is better than the present, assuming a priori that things will only get better. I therefore greatly enjoy the novelty of this film's premise: the main character, who does not entirely like the Victorian era he lives in, launches himself on a trek into the future, only to learn that the Victorian era was about as good as it gets. The further he goes into the future, the worse things are, until about 800,000th year or so when he finds that those who are left who still resemble humans have been reduced to passive, unintelligent cattle. Note that the remake entirely botches this point. The Eloi ARE supposed to be human cattle. The remake took too many liberties with the story and unsurprisingly dropped the ball.

This time travelling tale is getting quite old, but is still fine
entertainment that will stir the imagination. Saw this movie around 40
years ago and even if some stuff is outdated, it still holds my attention.

Despite voluminous protest and nitpicking criticism from loyal fans of the original 1978-80 TV series, the 2003 version of Battlestar Galactica turned out surprisingly well for viewers with a tolerance for change. Originally broadcast on the Sci-Fi Channel in December 2003 and conceived by Star Trek: The Next Generation alumnus Ronald D. Moore as the pilot episode for a "reimagined" TV series, this four-hour "miniseries" reprises the basic premise of the original show while giving a major overhaul (including some changes in gender) to several characters and plot elements. Gone are the flowing robes, disco-era hairstyles, and mock-Egyptian fighter helmets, and thankfully there's not a fluffy "daggit" in sight... at least, not yet. Also missing are the "chrome toaster" Cylons, replaced by new, more formidable varieties of the invading Cylon enemy, including "Number Six" in hot red skirts and ample cleavage, who tricks the human genius Baltar into a scenario that nearly annihilates the human inhabitants of 12 colonial worlds.

Thus begins the epic battle and eventual retreat of a "ragtag fleet" of humans, searching for the mythical planet Earth under the military command of Adama (Edward James Olmos) and the political leadership of Laura Roslin (Mary McDonnell), a former secretary of education, 43rd in line of succession and rising to the occasion of her unexpected Presidency. As directed by Michael Rymer (Queen of the Damned), Moore's ambitious teleplay also includes newfangled CGI space battles (featuring "handheld" camera moves and subdued sound effects for "enhanced realism"), a dysfunctional Col. Tigh (Michael Hogan) who's provoked into action by the insubordinate Starbuck (Katee Sackhoff), and a father-son reunion steeped in familial tragedy. To fans of the original BG series, many of these changes are blasphemous, but for the most part they work--including an ominous cliffhanger ending. The remade Galactica is brimming with smart, well-drawn characters ripe with dramatic potential, and it readily qualifies as serious-minded science fiction, even as it gives BG loyalists ample fuel for lively debate. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars An amazing Sci-Fi Film!.......2007-08-14

It was about re-inventing an ages old series, but they just rewrote the book on dos and donts for science fiction. Battlestar Galactica's Mini-Series introduces an amazing new world filled with all the things science fiction seemed to avoid: the biggest personal and societal issues that nobody likes looking at and admitting to. In the midst of disaster, we're capable of wondrous things, but not invulnerable to committing heinous acts... who's the victim on this new show?

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-08-13

Do not watch the miniseries unless you are prepared to buy season 1, after the first 5 minutes of the miniseries I was completely hooked. Everything about BSG is simply ingenious, the characters are perfect, the story line is great, and it's NOT just another sci-fi series. BSG is one of the best sci-fi shows ever created. That because of one simple reason, even if you don't like sci-fi you will still LOVE this show.

2 out of 5 stars I didn't see BSG anywhere in this miniseries........2007-07-30

I was going to pretend this abomination never existed, but recently my wife wanted to rent this and since I had to watch it I feel that I must vent - in the same way that survivors of any tragic violation need to vent. I should also say that in other reviews I've said that I don't like to write bad reviews and that I try to find the good in a work of art. This is true, but I looked and in this particular case I'm going to enjoy writing this bad review.

First things first: For those who don't understand this, The traditional reason you would EVER change a character's gender to female is to add more of a female presence in a mostly male dominated story. The Sci-fi channel seems to just like to do it. No rhyme or reason whatsoever.

I get a VERY strong feeling that the creators of BSG were split on whether they were going to do a politically correct show, and as such the changes are erratic, if not completely random and beyond stupid. Apollo has been turned into a whiney little teenager with daddy issues. Zack is not even granted the grace of an on-screen death but we get to here "Lee" whine about how his dad was responsible. Colonel Tigh is white (which doesn't really matter THAT much I guess but it ties into the aforementioned political correctness thing I mentioned) and we've switched to a new cinema verite style. That might have been cool if done right (Firefly was much more effective with it) but after the first few scenes where the camera veers away right when there should have been a cool FX shot, just feels like it's there so they don't have to computer animate anything difficult.

So we come to it at last. What is UP with the gender changes? We have a new female president which, yay strong women - woman in charge I get it. So we're adding strong women, So Starbuck loses her penis (and about 40 points off her IQ.. not saying there's a connection there.. I'm really not) and so does Boomer who changes race AND sex. Ok, so we've added strong women.. yay for PC, but where are Athena and Cassiopia? I didn't see them anywhere. So we've retcon'd out two female characters and added three more - four if you count Apollo.

Now, people are going to vote down my review for saying these things and that's fine for the very simple reason that younger fans of this series don't CARE about the changes made to the show and that's great. I was ready to forgive ALL the above stuff if only the miniseries could actually put an awesome show together. So I gave the show a chance.

And then...

I watch the beginning bits and I'm noticing that I'm not seeing a lot of space shots which are my personal favorite things in SF. That was ok though because a. There were SOME and b. I knew there were preliminaries. Then there's this cool bit of skirmishing involving one of the newly neutered characters which was kind of cool. THEN they cut back to Galactica and it's mentioned in dialogue that 30 Battlestars have been destroyed. Let me say that again.. it's MENTIONED in DIALOGUE that 30 BATTLESTARS WERE DESTROYED. Part of the attractions in seeing an update of BSG was seeing the Battlestar fleet get BLASTED! Even the cheesy ORIGINAL series showed that! But instead we got to watch some little border skirmish while the real battles were going on elsewhere.

After that bit of crappy film making and watching the camera veer away from anything that would have been a good effect AND looking at that vapid slackmouthed look on Ms. Starbuck's face for 3 hours I can only say that this series has been raped. Ron Moore decided to essentially use BSG as the subject of a Scheizer film(sp). He will go to the special Hell - Firefly fans, YOU know the one I mean.

I already know the crap I'm going to get about this review too.. "BSG is made for an adult audience and isn't all about the special effects." Let me make this clear: I like movies and shows where things get blown up this is true, but not exclusively. I like 2001, Silent Running and Babylon 5 was my favorite show of all time and I don't think anyone would deny that Babylon 5 is made for an adult audience.

In short, this is a bad show, it's badly conceived, badly written and it rapes it's source material for no discernable goal. I give it two stars because the real documentery feel is kind of cool. If anything else were, it might have worked.

5 out of 5 stars Did you wonder how it all began?.......2007-07-30

This is a great introduction to the latest re-incarnation (no pun intended!) of the Battlestar Galactica franchise. A must for fans of serious science fiction, it presents the story of man vs. machine in a gritty, realistic manner that is reminiscent of the best in science fiction films. Recommended for all fans of the series!

4 out of 5 stars The sci-fi classic returns in style.......2007-07-13

Ten years after Star Trek was cancelled, BG was launched and immediately became its own cult phenomenon. The series benefitted from more advanced special effects technology (John Dykstra of Star Wars fame headed that up), and a solid cast of actors including Lorne Greene, John Colicos (who starred as evil Klingon commander Koor in one Star Trek episode), Richard Hatch, and Dirk Benedict.

The gigantic Battlestars and the Egyptian themed fighters were cool, and the Cylons were the implaccable robotic bad guys out to exterminate the rag-tag remnants of humanity. This being prime time and the bland, disco-dancing 70s, the TV censors forbade the Cylons actually killing any human pilots, and so the closest our intrepid Starbuck and the other pilots ever came to perdition was getting his vertical stabilizer singed, but that's okay. The dogfights were still well done and the dramatic launching tubes were a nice touch, too. They tended to reuse some of the special effects to cut costs, but what the hell, that makes BG no different from Star Trek in which the same phasor shot from the Enterprise in space was reused a number of times.

Although the show never achieved the large fandom of Star Trek, the fan base of the show is as loyal as any series ever aired, many of whom prefer it to Star Trek. That's quite a testamonial to a series that only ran for a year before being cancelled.

Now with this miniseries, the show returns with all the drama and originality of the first episodes. Experienced viewers will note some changes (Starbuck is now a woman), but overall, the new serial is true to the original. The special effects are even better, the casting is great, and the stories even more intense and taught. There seems hardly a moment in each episode where you can catch your breath and relax before the next disaster strikes. Overall I think this is a fine series and a credit to the original, much loved show.

Despite the inevitable law of diminishing returns, The Matrix Revolutions is quite satisfying as an adrenalized action epic, marking yet another milestone in the exponential evolution of computer-generated special effects. That may not be enough to satisfy hardcore Matrix fans who turned the Wachowski Brothers' hacker mythology into a quasi-religious pop-cultural phenomenon, but there's no denying that the trilogy goes out with a cosmic bang instead of the whimper that many expected. Picking up precisely where The Matrix Reloaded left off, this 130-minute finale finds Neo (Keanu Reeves) at a virtual junction, defending the besieged human enclave of Zion by confronting the attacking machines on their home turf, while humans combat swarms of tentacled mechanical sentinels as Zion's fate lies in the balance. It all amounts to a blaze of CGI glory, devoid of all but the shallowest emotions, and so full of metaphysical hokum that the trilogy's detractors can gloat with I-told-you-so sarcasm. And yet, Revolutions still succeeds as a slick, exciting hybrid of cinema and video game, operating by its own internal logic with enough forward momentum to make the whole trilogy seem like a thrilling, magnificent dream. -- Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars The End of the Matrix Trilogy..........2007-07-16

"The Matrix: Revolutions" is the conclusion of a trilogy that began with the highly original "The Matrix" and continued with "The Matrix Reloaded." "Revolutions", despite not really adding any new material to the legend, manages to be a surprisingly satisfying conclusion to an epic sci-fi saga, one that cut some original ground and inspired its own pop-culture phenomenon.

"Matrix: Revolutions" picks up where "Reloaded" left off, with the last human city of Zion under siege by the machines. Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus rallies the survivors to buy time for some sort of miracle. Meanwhile, Neo (Keanu Reeves), the hoped-for source of that miracle, works his way through a world that seems equal parts computer language and vaguely Christian theology toward a confrontation with the renegade program Agent Smith. Neo's quest will take him and Trinity (Carrie Ann Moss) to Machine City in search of a final showdown with Smith. The result is frenetic action, with a few welcomes instances of "bullet time" thrown in.

In lieu of adding new material to the legend, the movie features long (even overlong) computer-generated action sequences that will appeal to hard-core fans of the series. A decisive explanation for the nature of the world in which the story takes place won't be obvious from a single viewing, but perhaps that just preserves some of the mystery. Character development is limited; fans will pick up where they left off but newcomers may be confused.

This movie is well recommended to fans of the Matrix phenomenon; newcomers should seek out the original movie as a starting point.

3 out of 5 stars (no spoilers) good thoughts and intentions, poor execution.......2007-07-11

This movie is only moderately entertaining, but what it lacks in its odd pacing and mediocre character development it makes up in intellectual appeal. Upon reflection, it's kind of an odd mix of mass Hollywood appeal and thought-provoking ideas. In this movie, the two elements don't really mesh.

On the one hand, it has the feel of an action movie. Though I'm not much into action movies these days, the action sequences here do exceed most action movies. These sequences are visually and technically stunning, and most of them are filled with new ideas. But aside from their impressiveness, the main pitfall of this movie, and of the whole trilogy, is how it uses action - the action gives the story its texture, but it's simply too conventional. When car-chases or gunfights or karate fights begin, the viewer's mind is intentionally put on pause, and s/he's encouraged to dig into the fight and give into the adrenaline rush. It reminds me of my intense dislike for musicals; even if a musical has a good plot and sound characters, when the music is cued, everything is put on hold for song and dance, when I'm just waiting for things to continue. Likewise, the action sequences here arrest the plot development. They're still entertaining, but in a very short-lived manner. The fighting compares well with every other movie with similar fighting, but it's poorly integrated into the story of The Matrix; and even if it proves groundbreaking, its influence will dissipate as directors one-up these movies by coming up with more exciting ways to have one character chase or demolish another.

The last hour of Revolutions is told in two consecutive unrelenting battles; it results in a long-lived and exciting climax, but it turns the viewer's attention away from the film's plot, and merely towards sigh and relief when the tension stops. And for all it was worth, by the time we reach the end, the plot developments feel minor in comparison.

The ending doesn't quite feel worth it, but it does convey the thought that went into the story's structure. In retrospect, it works very well in theory; it's almost like one of those complicated gun standoffs where more three or so characters are pointing guns at each other in various directions (and in touching every single past convention, the film does contain a brief literal version of this). Only here the characters exist and influence each other on different levels and in different worlds, and they're eventually brought together by similar yet conflicting interests. Moreover, each side pointing guns is made to represent different intertwining ideas. On one level, in order to accomplish this, the movie does occasionally spell things out too clearly to the viewer with pseudo-philosophical rants; but more importantly the characters end up playing out these roles and "ideas" - the structure of the story walks the walk so to speak.

To avoid spoiling it I won't give too much away. In and of itself, the end is fairly simple, but what has continued to impress me is how the movie's sequences of events arrived there from a "perfectly balanced equation" (which we hear about in The Matrix Reloaded), that pitted two seemingly contrasting ideas on different sides in order to fulfill its purpose. There is an inevitable logic to the "solution", which speaks to the trilogy as a whole.

But as I said before, most of this is painted in cheeky Hollywood clothing, complete with Bond-like sarcasm, overuse of stunt-men and CGI-effects, and dispensable characters and side-plots. With a lesser budget and geared towards a smaller adudience, the story could have been told in a tighter and more efficient manner in three or four hours if it had less focus on fighting, and more focus on the characters and the different levels of the story. But not to ruminate on what it could have been, I was glad that the movie challenged me more than most large-scale movies and gave me something pretty to watch at the same time. Hopefully it'll raise the bar for other mainstream flicks, beyond just by giving us new ways to film people shooting each other.

4 out of 5 stars "oh i'm not so bad, once you get to know me".......2007-06-23

Conclusion is what Revolutions is, bringing and ended to the explosive Matrix Trilogy. A direct continuation from Reloaded, Revolutions is once again more eye candy than anything else, with the actual Matrix getting less screen time than the first 2 films. The focus is on the great war in Zion city, against the machines. Its true, the best action and story in this movie all take place in the real world. But there is still plenty of Matrix involved, but only in the beginning and end of the film.

The ending is predictable, but the journey to reach the conclusion has smaller twists and turns along the way that are unexpected. The movie is very intense, in terms of action and cgi. It is truly a thrill ride and we finally get to see an army of mechs unleash their firepower upon the sentinels in Zion city. Neo and Smith face off in their final battle. Unlike the first Matrix, which incorporated a nice blend of realistic martial arts and wirework, this battle is more cgi and expands to the 2 barely fighting on any ground, thus limiting the true martial arts. Not a bad fight, but its ridiculously overdone and not very pretty.

Some say this movie is just plain bad, but I don't believe that is true. Most people want to compare it to the first Matrix, but independently its not a bad movie. While it is not nearly as good as the first Matrix, it is still a great movie, but just like Reloaded, the story effort is not as strong as the first Matrix, and the focus seems to be on the action. You'll want to see Reloaded before Revolutions, simply because Reloaded is part 1 and Revolutions is pt2.

4 out of 5 stars Jesus analogy aside, some brave choices here.......2007-05-17

You know, it's almost impossible to do a trilogy franchise and please fans of the original with episodes 2 and 3. When Reloaded came out, I listened to the masses who moaned and rolled their eyes that no one should bother and to just accept the original Matrix as the classic that it is, essentially pretending that they don't exist. When will I learn my lesson and go see for myself instead of writing things off like that?! I did the same thing with The Two Towers, which everyone told me I would hate. Well excuse me, I loved it. Every last minute. No, it wasn't Fellowship and it wasn't supposed to be, it was different and progressed the story. I feel the same way about Reloaded and Revolutions; it's essentially one enormous story (and yes, it's easy to see the Jesus and King Arthur analogies here) told in three very different films. It would be cowardice and unoriginal to duplicate the first film just to play it safe and I commend the W brothers for staying true to their vision, however and whenever that came about. I won't spoil any plot points here but there are some surprises because American audiences are accustomed to certain things and a few times this film zigs when you expect it to zag. The battle sequences at Zion are a bit long but they're well done, and while I hear a lot of griping about how they ripped off Aliens with their technology didn't we all think it was damn cool at the time and wish we'd seen it do more? I did. So here you get to see that in an insane standoff to save the city.

Reloaded and Revolutions are far more akin to one another than the original Matrix is to either and from what I hear from people in the industry, the W bros didn't know they would be doing 3 films initially so the Matrix was conceived and produced as a standalone project and then the trilogy grew out of the popularity. Now, I personally don't think that detracts from anything. Whether it was all conceived at the outset or not, they planted some very interesting seeds in The Matrix and then helped them to sprout in Reloaded and Revolutions. I liked the philosophy and ideologies lobbed out there, whether I agreed with it all or not. This franchise has balls. Once in a while I felt like the fight scenes or action got to be a bit lengthy but at the same time there was such astounding beauty within each segment it kept me hooked into it and interested.

And as for the absolute ending, all I can say is that if you need a neat and tidy Hollywood ending in order to feel satisfied (which is very common and understandable) then this will leave you frustrated or upset. I also see a corrolation between people's own attitudes about life, death and rebirth reflected in their reactions to this trilogy, though sometimes on an entirely subconscious level. I just wish I had seen them all in the theater rather than allowing myself to be swayed by the massive tidal wave of negativity I heard about the last two installments. I now own them all and I'd love to watch them in sequence sometime soon, like Lord of the Rings or the original Star Wars trilogy, to see how that brings it all together as well.

And for the love of God, let's lay off of Keanu for once! Every actor has their niche, even Jack Nicholson. Would you want to see Jack as King Lear? Probably not. I hated Keanu in Much Ado because it's not his element, but as Neo he is the perfect choice.

If you open yourself to an intense experience and let go of any expectation of seeing another Matrix, you might enjoy this film as much as I did. Again, it might help to watch even 2 and 3 together since they do have such a similar energy and really build on one another. I think this is powerful stuff that would make for some really interesting discussions with a movie group.

3 out of 5 stars Lacks originality and style of acts I & II.......2007-02-28

Revolutions was not a great climax to the Matrix trilogy. The first was sensational. It was stylistic, original, and thought provoking. The first time I watched it I was captivated the entire time and wanted more. Many people did not think much of Reloaded, but I personally loved it. It was not mind-bending like the first, but that wasn't its purpose. The Matrix asked the questions; Reloaded set the stage for a final resolution. I felt it did so with continued originality and style. The fight sequences were artistic and compelling. I don't know how Matrix fans could not have loved watching the result of Neo realizing the potential of his abilities. I can't help overusing the word, but the movie just overflowed with style. The architect scene was odd, but it had good dialogue and was a pretty fun change of direction.

Revolutions almost completely dropped all of those aspects that I enjoyed about the first two. Instead of original, it was filled with cliche. Most of the Zion battle seemed like it could have been made by cutting and pasting from dozens of war/action films. Other than the visual aspect, there was nothing original about the entire Zion portion of the movie. Amaze some people by how well you can pilot a ship. Can an unlikely character somehow find it in him to overcome all when nearly all hope is lost? I need not mention the overdone yet cliche Neo/Trinity scene. The Merovingian fight scenes were fun but basically a hybrid of the security guard fight from I and the medieval weapons one from II.

On the whole, I liked the culmination of the Neo storyline. The machine city, along with the train station, was one of the few aspects of the film that was original and interesting. On a fairly superficial note, I just did not enjoy the fight scenes with Smith. The stylistic choreography was replaced with two guys flying all over the place. Even more superficially, I always loved Smith's wisea-- lines from the previous films, but we didn't really get any more of those. Again, I thought the concept of the Neo storyline was good. It just felt like it was delivered a little less thoughtfully, almost as though that plot was the last to be worked out before some sort of deadline. The Oracle's eyes were thrown in as being important to get then barely played any part in the story. The Merovingian didn't have anything interesting to add this time around. Generally it just felt like the actual plot of Revolutions was thrown together somewhat hastily.

The movie wasn't terrible, it was just quite mediocre. Visually it had many great moments including the batman bouncers at the coat check, much of the Zion battle, and the Source. However, it mostly lacked originality and didn't fit together that well. As the final act, Revolutions could have been the culmination of an exciting, philosophical, and compelling trilogy. Instead it was just the last movie.

Far from the masterful treatment that groundbreaking animator Ralph Bakshi gave the similarly themed The Lord of the Rings just a year later, Wizards feels amateurish. A simplistic distillation of fantasy tropes, the scenario is millions of years after nuclear war wipes out civilization. Middle Earth fairies, elves, and magic emerge from the "good lands," while dimwitted mutants with poor comic timing emerge from the nuclear wastes. In the ultimate confrontation between good and evil, a hippie-ish wizard named Avatar defends his utopia against the technological and neo-Nazi revival of his bad-seed twin, Blackwolf. With volleys of jokes that couldn't hit a barn door, elves with Brooklyn accents, and the dubious climax that sees the kindly old wizard using one of the hated machines of war to triumph over evil, Wizards is one of fantasy animation's least successful examples. --Alan E. Rapp

When the power-hungry Blackwolf attacks Montagar, Avatar, accompanied only by a spirited young woman and a courageous elf, must enter the darkness of Scortch to save his world. WIZARDS is a thought-provoking, kaleidoscopic feast for the eyes that will enthrall animation fans and film lovers of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Wizards/Lord of the Rings.......2007-09-15

REALLY enjoyed the special features. Lots of stuff shared directly from Bakshi directly. You may know that the Bakshi Lord of the Rings DVD just has the movie. But because so much of Wizards was basically preperation for the making of Rings, you kind of get some of what should have been given with that DVD.

5 out of 5 stars For the Love of Wizards.......2007-08-14

I remember at the age of 12 my old man taking me to the drive in to see this movie. It was the sexiest cartoon I had ever seen to that point of my young life. I especially loved the ending. I really loved sharing it with my son who is now 16. It is a fantasy classic.

4 out of 5 stars SIgn of the times.......2007-07-24

Seeing this one-time favorite animated movie was good. The cutting edge animation (for the time) was still worthy of respect. As much as I've always enjoyed the combination of free drawing and other media (like many of the evil soldiers), the final battle between the brothers is what makes the movie for me, as it did many years ago.

I passed this movie on to a young law student so he could see how things used to be. I bet he'll like it.

Falling from the Oscar-winning glory of Dances with Wolves to the opposite end of the critical and box-office scale, Kevin Costner must have been deeply humbled when this three-hour postapocalyptic tale--his sophomore effort as a director--was greeted with a critical thrashing and tepid audience response. One of the most conspicuous flops of its decade, the 1997 release must have seemed like a sure thing on paper: a kind of futurist Western starring Costner as a charismatic drifter-turned-hero who leads the resistance against a military tyrant (Will Patton) by reviving the long-dormant postal system to reunite isolated communities in their fight for freedom. The movie bombed, but, like many audacious failures, it's got qualities that make it at least partially endearing, and its earnestness (although bordering on corny) keeps it from being entirely silly. Faint praise, perhaps, but Costner's ode to patriotism is occasionally stirring and visually impressive. The dual-layered, widescreen DVD includes a documentary segment about the creation of the film's special effects sequences, featuring a running commentary by the special effects creators. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Too long but...........2007-09-04

We watched this movie again yesterday, and just like I remembered, it is too long. But I still like it better than the book, which I also liked with reservation.

Here's the thing, you don't have to pay over-much attention of this film to get the good part, which for me, is the message that people need hope, and more than that, anyone who helps give hope to others is a hero.

But that's just me.

4 out of 5 stars what is important enough to hope for? does it matter if it is true?.......2007-07-19

movie review -- the Postman
I saw it when it first came out, had the opportunity to watch it again this evening.
It's the motivation for hope that interests me most about the movie

The movie is about hope, the kind of hope and strength that comes from believing in something worthwhile and greater than yourself and your immediate gratification.
What is curious is that the plot really proposes a hope in hope, akin to the modern ideas of a faith in faith itself. The content of either is really kind of unimportant, the only thing that seems important is the strength with which you hold to the hope or faith.

He is a fraud. A mild con man, out for a meal and a warm place to sleep. The post system is build by a teenager with a strong hero worship and a great imagination. He too is a fraud, making up letters from the postman to set rules and motivate the postal riders. In some magic way this hope in hope, this faith in faith, transmogrifies itself into a heroic army that sweeps down on horseback to blow the bad guys away. phoey! doesn't it matter if people believe a lie or believe the truth? isn't the content of hope, the object of faith important?

It is a clever plot with enough action and adventure to involve people in watching it. It's not a bad movie, but it really is indicative of the current mentality that faith, hope and love will conquer all, no matter what the content of either is. The orange army, the bad guys, had hope as well. Hope to live another day, hope to watch the flicks that night, and the hope for some loot in raiding the rest of the devastated and depopulated countryside. The leader, the general of the bad guys really had the most hope of all-hope that he would rule and impose his will on everyone around him and knock down anyone who dared stand up to him.

I propose that the object of love, the reason for hope and the content of faith is important. Many of the most motivated and evil people that ever lived had lots of hope, lots of faith, often in themselves and as much love as the next guy. I suppose that those men that devastated this apocalyptic world had lots of hope that they were right, the enemy was wrong and their case just and they virtually destroyed their world. It's all too much like the proverbial airplane pilot that reports to the passengers that he has good news and bad news. The good news is that they are making excellent time, the bad news is that they are hopelessly lost. Great hope and faith in the service of evil is more than wasted it is what makes for so much conflict and evil in this world. People who are completely convinced that their hope and faith is something that i must share or .... . The content of faith, the object and reason for hope is important.

The movie tries to make the connection between home and hearth, between a warm bed with a beautiful wife and the patriotic feelings towards the national state. But it is a sleight of hand trick, the nation state, the big conglomerates of power, this belongs to the evil, orange soldier guys, not to peaceful farmers or really small communities. I can't help but think of the book: The Parable of the Tribes, those evil ones who fight to control and rule over others, they change and shape the world into their image, as force seems the only way to meet force, violence the only way to defeat the violent. It's a stirring enough movie, but it is misdirected, hope and faith are important things, but the object of those very necessary and very human strivings are likewise important.

It is necessary not just to have hope, but to have hope in things that are true. It is necessary to love, but to love the right people for the right reasons. It is necessary to have faith, but the object and content of the faith must be in real things, things that are worthwhile having faith, hope and love place in them, or towards them. Faith in faith, or hope in hope may very well motivate people to rise above themselves and do heroic things, but it also is fraught with potential to me misguided or worse yet manipulated by those evil ones. Everyone in the orange jumpsuits wasn't impressed and forced to be there, some were there genuinely because they loved, hoped and had faith in their leaders and in their cause. This is the way faith, hope and love are double edged knifes, you can and do have people who are sincerely and whole heartedly committed to false and ignoble causes, ready to die, and worse yet kill for their objects of their misplaced but certainly bold faith.

Well, it's just a movie and not a philosophic treatise, although it is nearly as long as some. But it is worth thinking about and considering, good and evil, the constant battle that swirls around and often through us, the sides don't really differ in the intensity of their desires, but only in the object of them.

4 out of 5 stars The critics are idiots!.......2007-07-15

This is a prime example why I never believe a critic. I loved this movie. It has it's little weird moments, which is why I didn't rate it 5 stars. All in all an excellent movie and worth the long watch.
Again, the critics missed the boat on this one!

4 out of 5 stars Ignore the Critics.......2007-07-04

I've enjoyed this movie so much over the years that I found myself adding it to my personal DVD collection - and I am very selective in what I add. Yes it's long, but it's also exciting, moving, and inspiring in turns. This is a movie that features adventure and explores themes of courage, commitment and patriotism. It's also the best movie Costner's ever done.

A visual knockout, Titan A.E. is an ambitious animated feature that combines traditional animations, computer-generated imagery, and special effects in the service of a science fiction adventure plotted with narrative conventions familiar from Star Wars and Star Trek. Credit directors Don Bluth (An American Tail, The Secret of NIMH, Anastasia) and Gary Goldman with crafting a vivid, convincing look to this deep space saga, which conjures some stunning images. A tense opening sequence climaxing in the destruction of Earth, a watery planet where delicate but deadly hydrogen trees float, joyriding in a starship while pursued by playful "space angels," and a nerve-wracking journey through a lethal maze of massive ice crystals each qualify as mesmerizing sequences in any film context.

What's visually stunning proves intermittently stunted on the narrative front, however. Orphaned when the evil Drej atomize Earth, protagonist Cale (voiced by Matt Damon) must journey across space to unlock the mystery of his late father's final project, the Titan spacecraft, in a test of faith and filial identity that echoes Star Wars. The Titan itself ultimately poses a cosmic potential familiar to admirers of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Comical sidekicks (Nathan Lane, Janeane Garofalo, John Leguizamo), a sultry love interest (Drew Barrymore), and a roguish mentor (Bill Pullman) all verge on the generic, narrowly redeemed by dialogue from a writing team including Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon.

It's likely that Titan's target audience of young males prompted the filmmakers to walk a tightrope between softer family features and more violent, hard-edged anime. Titan's brief bloodshed and coy nudity stop short of PG-13 terrain, though younger viewers might be unsettled by the violence. Young teens will find the proceedings tamer than the video games and anime fantasies that have influenced it. --Sam Sutherland

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-05-30

This DVD has great quality and there were no scratches on it. It came neatly wrapped in plastic and looked like it was just made. The bonus features were neat to watch and the movie itself was a delight, even though it's a few years old in the making. I recommend this to anyone who likes animated movies released by networks other than Disney or Nickelodeon, such as HBO, and ones who like to watch futuristic movies.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, and fun .......2007-05-11

No, it isn't anything ground-breaking or incredible, but it's a fun sci-fi romp for the older crowd. Some things may be too tense for younger viewers.

4 out of 5 stars A Really Good and Unappreciated film.......2007-02-06

Titan A.E is an under-rated animated science fiction film that barely anyone seen when it was in theatres. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within had a similar treatment when it was in theatres. I guess because most grown-ups don't go to theatres to see films like this. Plus with the rock music and style of the film it does sorta target teenagers and they were probably too busy seeing X-Men or Mission Impossible 2 at the time. But that's a shame because this is a lot less of a disapointing Science Fiction film than StarWars Episode 1 which was released a year before it. Infact minus the rock music this is more like any of the original Starwars films than any of the prequels.

It's about a group of human rebels who set out to find something called the Titan that might actually be able to build a planet. Since humans have no real home any more after earth was destroyed. They battle an alien race that destroyed earch called the Drej. The Drej are desperate to stop them from finding the Titan.

It's not the greatest cartoon movie ever made but it's refreshing compared to anything else that gets released these days. I mean lets face it everyone just wants to see 3-D these days and no one rushes to see the traditional regular animated movie any more these days. Although this film does have an unique look to it. It also has the sort of style of the animated Transformers movie from the 80's. So fans of that might appreciate this at least. It's also really better than most summer movies that people actually rush out to see. Plus the voice acting is fine. You have Matt Damon, Drew Barrymoore, Bill Pullman, John Leguzamo, Nathan Lane and Janeane Garofalo. Out of all of them I think the under-rated and under-used Bill Pullman does the best work here. He voices a Han Solo type character and does a really good job stealing the show. I just don't like how he's used at the end though since he's the best character of the movie.

4 out of 5 stars Good... for what it is........2007-01-25

Titan AE is a really good scifi movie. It has fantastic visuals, chases, and a good enough story to keep you interested. The voice acting is also pretty good. Unfortunately the movie suffers from what many movies, especially in this genre, suffer from. They don't commit to an adult or child-based audience, nor do they go after strictly a scifi audience or a more general viewing audience. So what ends up happening is you get just enough of both, without fully focusing on one target audience, a little sterile, but still good.

If you are looking for mind blowing concepts and something other than 'standard scifi fare' this isn't where to look. If you want a good movie that keeps you entertained and that the kids can watch too, this is a great flick.

2 out of 5 stars Brat discovers father.......2007-01-15

Take a formula story; add celebrity voices to distract you, throw in graphics that you would not know was better if they did not yell it at you every chance they get. And you have Titan A.E.

If this is supposed to be 3'D a D is missing. It is slightly better than the standard Anime. They fill in the slow spaces while the graphics are catching up to the story with crude imitations of contemporary bubble gum music.

The story is formula. The characters are stilted and the technology is not.

This is a very lengthy cartoon. Designed for people that would be better off with a commuter game.
