4 out of 5 stars Loads of fun.......2007-08-20

If you try to take this serial seriously, you won't like it much. But if you'll relax and let it take you back to the Great Depression days, it's a gem. There's Bela Lugosi in the starring role as Dr. Zorka, "mad scientist," with a load of crazy inventions in his bubbling and vaporous laboratory: there are exploding spiders, a weird robot with pointed teeth, a belt gizmo that doesn't quite make Dr. Zorka invisible but turns him into a puffy cloud. And there's sexy Dorothy Arnold as the "girl reporter," a drop-dead gorgeous blond who married and divorced Joltin' Joe DiMaggio near the time this serial was filmed.

The plot is more than a bit silly, but that was the case in those old serials. They had to put a cliffhanger in every episode, in an attempt to keep moviegoers coming back. There's also a fistfight in every chapter, plus wrecked cars, a railroad collision, and other thrilling sillies. The acting is no better. It's all downright camp--like the Batman TV series. But one has to like those old square-back cars, the roadsters, even antique fire engines, biplanes, and the Hindenburg wreck.

So relax and view this for what it is--an entertainment from a seemingly simpler time, when people were trying to forget about the Depression and Hitler and Mussolini and the Dust Bowl and Father Coughlin. This is just great fun. Reality wasn't.

3 out of 5 stars The Hindenburg Mystery Finally Solved!.......2007-02-19

"The Phantom Creeps" is a serial made in 1939 starring Bela Lugosi. Lugosi really stretches himself as an actor, this time playing Dr. Zorka, a mad scientist. (For a genuinely new twist, he does actually grow a beard for the role.) This is one of the better serials from the era, but is tediously long, though Bela really does his best to keep the suspensefulness in play.

The series is more interesting than some other serials due not only to Lugosi, but also to the bizarre mechanical contraptions he invents. My personal are the mechanical exploding spiders that he can control with a piece of the "secret element" he has discovered. This same element makes possible an invisibility belt which Bela aggressively uses along with his "Z-ray" gun to pursue his nefarious plans. He also invents a giant robot to do his bidding, though it doesn't seem all that menacing to me in that it moves as deftly as a sloth. (Why do people in these kind of films never try running away from the slow, menacing thing?)

Zorka's schemes put him in a variety of exciting scenarios, each designed to get the original theater viewers to come back for the next episode. There are shootouts, car chases, and in the end an airborne conflict between biplanes. Zorka gets progressively more insane throughout the film, and Lugosi really shines in that aspect of the role. In the finale, Zorka steals a biplane (remember that the military still used biplanes as first line fighters when this was made) and starts tossing bombs out of it destroying varied targets (a barn, a battleship, etc.) with great abandon, before finally being engaged by the biplanes of the Army. Without doubt, my favorite moment in the serial is when a shot of the Hindenburg is shown placidly cruising along, followed by Bela maniacally tossing a bomb overboard. Although predictable, what follows is the single gutsiest use of stock footage in history, when we see the now famous footage of the Hindenburg exploding at Lakehurst, New Jersey in May, 1937 (only two years before this was made.) I absolutely could not believe the director was brave enough to even think about trying that.

The serial features all the elements meant to keep the viewer coming back: romance (for the ladies,) action (for the men,) and suspense (for everybody.) As such this is successful, and I recommend it enthusiastically to all fans of serials, fans of Lugosi, or anyone interested in filmmaking conventions from the era.

VCI Entertainment and Universal Pictures present..."The Phantom Creeps" (1939) (Dolby digitally remastered), a 12 Chapter cliffhanger from a thrilling suspenseful Universal serial featuring a good cast, but Bela Lugosi is at his very best in this twist and turn original story, Lugosi keeps the adrenaline going and makes this mediocre serial a top notch flick....story line asks these questions, what strange experiments is Dr. Alex Zorka (Bela Lugosi) performing in his very secret laboratory and to what end will this bring to the world as we know it...can assistant Monk (Jack C. Smith) keep the fine Zorka from releasing his eight foot giant robot friend upon the entire cast and crew of Universal Pictures...is there such a thing as inivisiblity, suspended animation and weapons of mass-destruction, well only Lugosi can answer all these questions...will our hero Captain Bob West (Robert Kent) and girl report Jean Drew (Dorothy Arnold) be able to cope will all the ins and outs of Lugosi's villianous plans...why is Zorka planning to carry onboard deadley explosives then chart his travel log over the ocean....doesn't sound good to me, an you're correct there's trouble afoot.....don't leave the theater until the final chapter is over and done with "To Destroy the World"....just remember double thrills, chills, mystery and suspense...hitting the bull's eye with excitement...don't miss a single spine thrilling episode..return next week to this local theater for another episode of action and adventure that will keep you thrilled until the next chapter.

Under director's Ford Beebe and Saul A. Goodkind, associate producer Henry MacRae, supervised by J. Laurence Wickland, screenplay by George Pympton, Basil Dickey and Mildred Barish, original story by Willis Cooper, dialogue director Lyonel Margolies, musical score by Charles Previn, Franz Waxman, Frank Skinner, stunts by David Sharpe, Tom Steele and Bud Wolfe...the cast includes Bela Lugosi (Dr. Alex Zorka), Robert Kent (Capt. Bob West), Dorothy Arnold (Jean Drew), Edwin Stanley (Dr. Fred Mallory), Regis Toomey (Lt. Jim Daley), Jack C. Smith (Monk), Edward Van Sloan (Jarvis-spy chief), Dora Clement (Ann Zorka), Anthony Averill (Rankin/henchman), Hugh Huntley (Perkins/Mallory's lab assistant), Eddie Acuff (Mac/AMI agent), Roy Barcroft (Parker/AMI agent), Al Bridge (White Rose sailor), Lane Chandler (Henchman with Rankin), Edmund Cobb (Army sergeant), Lee J. Cobb (Road crew foreman), Karl Hackett (Brown/henchman-secretary), Charles King (Policeman), Monte Montague (Signal tower operator), David Sharpe (Schooner sailor), Tom Steele (Train conductor), Forrest Taylor (Black/henchman), George Magrill (Thug-Pilot)..........special footnote, to many collectors this serial reunites Bela Lugosi and Edwin Stanley from their first meeting in the film "Dracula" (1931), all serial-buffs should find "The Phantom Creeps" very rewarding and entertaining, Lugosi gained fame when he played "Count Dracula" in the legendary 1927 Broadway stage adaptation of Bram Stoker's novel, continued for three years, and was subsequently, and memorably, filmed by Tod Browning in 1931, establishing Lugosi as one of the screen's greatest personifications of pure evil.........meanwhile back to our Universal Serial which is always good till the last drop and this serial is no exception...there is a great deal of entertainment here for the cliffhanger fans out there...all courtesy of VCI Entertainment, who in my humble opinion is the best there is in restoring early serials and features.

This was a very good film. Bela Lugosi plays Dr.Zorka a mad man who wants to take over the world. The film goes on and on from Zorka disappearing to the government stealing his box of mystery. I enjoyed the film but I thought it was a bit too long!

1 out of 5 stars Beware of annoying trademark watermark.......2005-07-30

What a load of old cobblers. No, I'm not complaining about the storyline and quality of The Phantom Creeps (after all, what do you expect for under $7?) What I'm irate about, and what every DVD purchaser around the world should also be concerned, is the way the distributor - Vintage Home Entertainment - has superimposed its logo watermark in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Not just once to establish the copyright ownership, but ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE SERIAL. I don't want my attention distracted with a logo emblazoned across the picture... and if I had known I wouldn't have spent my money on it. I hope this is not a sign of things to come with DVD releases - 'cause if it is, I ain't gonna buy anymore. The quality of the print, by the way, is woeful. Shocking quality and constant jumps where the film has been joined after breaking. I'll never buy another DVD from this mob again... this is possibly the worse DVD I've ever purchased... and I'm a big Bela Lugosi fan!!!

3 out of 5 stars Fun Serial with Lugosi. Typical early Alpha Quality.......2003-05-10

Fun Serial with Bela Lugosi at his evil best as Dr Zorka. Alpha has broken this 12 chapter serial into 2 separate DVD's for sale. This disk contains chapters 1-6. When I first starting watching this disk, I cringed during Chapter 1 as the quality was quite poor with lots of scrathes and some splicing. I thought, "Here we go again with a substandard Alpha release!" Then, to my surprise, chapters 2-5 were quite good. Still nothing like you would get from the Roan Group, but on par with Sinister Cinema or Retro Media. Chapter 6 falls in closer to the poor quality of chapter 1, however.

If you are a Lugosi fan and want a low cost version of this series, then take a chance on the Alpha release. If you are a Lugosi fan who wants to collect the best possible prints of his films, then skip this Alpha release. The disk contains no extras, but does have a chapter stops for each serial chapter.

Here are chapters 7-12 of the cheesy Bela Lugosi serial Phantom Creeps. Remember, the price of these Alpha titles should tell you something. The video quality here varies greatly from chapter to chapter. There are many scratches and the pictures jumps a little in places. This is a great serial and if you want a cheap copy, this Alpha version is okay. If you are a collector, however, wait for a better version.

2 Feature Films starring Bela Lugosi! THE DEVIL BAT (1940)- Bela Lugosi plays crazed scientist Dr. Paul Carruthers, who feels he has been treated horribly by the cosmetics companies and sets out to get his revenge. THE PHANTOM CREEPS (1939)- Bela Lugosi stars in this classic Universal serial as Dr. Alex Zorka, a crackpot scientist who invents the "secret element", something so powerful that it catches the attention of the US government as well as spies form (sic) various countries, all of whom scramble to obtain it. Though it ranks as one of the more inventive serials of the era, with its array of quasi-futuristic gadgets as well as an assortment of deranged robots, THE PHANTOM CREEPS is truly so bad that it's good.

Passport Video presents "The Bela Lugosi Box - 15 Frightful Films" (1942) --- (Dolby digitally remastered) --- Béla Lugosi was the stage name of actor Béla Ferenc Dezs Blaskó (October 20, 1882 - August 16, 1956) --- Lugosi was born in Lugos, Hungary, at the time part of Austria-Hungary (now Lugoj, Romania), the youngest of four children of a baker --- best known for his portrayal of "Dracula" in the American Broadway stage production, and subsequent film, of Bram Stoker's classic vampire story.

Late in his life, he again received star billing in movies when filmmaker Edward D. Wood, Jr., a fan of Lugosi, found him living in obscurity and near-poverty and offered him roles in his films, such as "GLEN OR GLENDA?" (1953) (in which his role made no more sense than the rest of the movie) and as a Dr. Frankenstein-like mad scientist in "BRIDE OF THE MONSTER" (1955), during post-production of the latter, Lugosi entered treatment for his addiction, and the premier of the film was ostensibly intended to help pay for his treatment expenses. The extras on an early DVD release of "PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE" (1959) include an impromptu interview with Lugosi upon his exit from the treatment center, which provide some rare personal insights into the man --- this was one of Lugosi's most infamous roles was released after he was dead. Ed Wood (Director) features footage of Lugosi interspersed with a double --- Wood had taken a few minutes of silent footage of Lugosi, in his Dracula cape, for a planned vampire picture but was unable to find financing for the project --- Wood later conceived of Plan 9, Wood wrote the script to incorporate the Lugosi footage and hired his wife's chiropractor to double for Lugosi in additional shots --- notice however the "double" is thinner than Lugosi, and covers the lower half of his face with his cape in every shot --- Leonard Maltin (Famous Film Critic) was quoted - "Lugosi died during production, and it shows."

Lugosi died of a heart attack on August 16, 1956 while lying in bed in his Los Angeles home. He was 73 --- Bela Lugosi was buried wearing one of the many capes from the Dracula stageplay, as per the request of his son and fifth wife, in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California --- Contrary to popular belief, Lugosi never requested to be buried in his famous cloak; Bela Lugosi, Jr. has confirmed on numerous occasions that he and his mother, Lillian, arrived at their decision independently.

2. Edward D. Wood Jr. (Director, Writer and Producer)
Date of birth: 10 October 1924 - Poughkeepsie, New York
Date of death: 10 December 1978 - North Hollywood, California

This collection of "The Bela Lugosi Box - 15 Frightful Films" (1942) --- still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years --- but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten ... Description

Motion picture serials from the '20s to the '50s were short adventure films that played before the feature attractions. Genres included horror, sci-fi, mystery, superhero, western and more that were played over 10-15 episodes in order to entice the audience back to the theatre the following week. Serials were known as "cliffhangers" because each episode would leave the viewer hanging, always "to be continued" until the final episode's resolution 10 or 15 weeks later.

One of the most memorable serials of the 1930's was The Phantom Creeps (1939). Bela Lugosi stars as Dr. Alex Zorka, a mad scientist, who conducts bizarre experiments in a secret laboratory with his assistant, Monk, an ex-convict. Dr. Zorka's inventions are sought after by the U.S. Government as well as hostile spies. The source of his inventions' power is a meteorite fragment he discovered in Africa, containing a source of limitless energy. Hokey, entertaining, and funny by today's standards, The Phantom Creeps is a classic example of the bygone era of Saturday matinees at the local movie house. All 12 episodes are presented here in their original unedited version.

3 out of 5 stars Lugosi Destroys the Hindenburg!.......2005-01-16

"The Phantom Creeps" (1939) is 12 chapters of Universal serial hokum. In other words, it's a lot of fun. Bela Lugosi plays Dr. Zorka to the hilt -- assisted by Universal's vast catalog of stock footage and classic music scores. The final chapter is particularly memorable, as mad scientist Lugosi gleefully brings down the Hindenburg. Universal did not make the finest serials, but "The Phantom Creeps" remains one of the studio's better efforts.

4 out of 5 stars wacky editing mania.......2002-12-20

This tape is nuts. When it arriaved at my house I was very dissapointed to find that it was only 80minutes long. The other version said that all the twelve episodes fill about 200 minutes. So i was bummed that i only got volume one out of 3 or something. But It turns out that this tape is a compilation of the best moments throughout the serial. This procedure of turning 200 and something minutes into 80 minutes a fun and wacky ride. There are so many jambled up plot lines, people running into scenes then back out in a cut, and then peopleliving through speeding plane wrecks and car explosions (With no explination). Over all the tape is rockin and I highly recommend it. A Cheasy Good Time!

4 out of 5 stars Creepy Bela.......2002-05-12

The Phantom Creeps was Bela Lugosi's last serial. Lugosi is Dr. Zorka another mad scientist looking to take over and control the world. He tries to achieve this World domination with a number of gadgets. He has built an 8-foot robot, a belt that makes him invisible, and a gas that suspends animation, which he delivers with mechanical spiders. Through the 12 episodes an Army intelligence officer and a newspaperwoman chase him.

The 12 episodes are:

1) The menacing Power
2) Death Stalks the Highway
3) Crashing Timbers
4) Invisible Terror
5) Thundering Rails
6) The Iron Monster
7) The Menacing Mist
8) Trapped in the Flames
9) Speeding Doom
10) Phantom Footprints
11) The Blast
12) To Destroy the World

I purchased this DVD because Bela Lugosi was in it. I was not disappointed - I have really enjoyed it. The quality is not bad. There are options to play each episode or play all 12 continuously.

2 out of 5 stars Good Serial, Bad DVD.......2001-01-27

The Phantom Creeps, Bela Lugosi's final movie serial, holds a special place in my memories for being the first complete chapterplay I had seen. I had seen portions of others but never a complete one before this. Lugosi steals the serial as Doctor Alex Zorka, a brilliant scientist who has made a series of inventions from a meteorite he found in Africa--via footage from "The Invisible Ray" for the Africa sequence. He wants to sell his secrets to the highest bidder, but the US Government wants to stop him. What is unusual for this serial is that I feel that Zorka was initially the good guy of the story before the US and a spyring start looking for his secrets and thus hounding him into insanity. The DVD for this is painful. The print used retains the Commonwealth (TV?) logo instead of the normal Filmcraft or Universal logo. Sound is muddy at quite a few places. Picture will be dark in a few places--sometimes in a daytime scene. They use only one set of opening credits for the 12 chapters. Normally, Universal would use a opening which showed the main cast for its first 3 episodes while the remaining episodes would use an opening that merely lists who the actors were. It is this second opening that is on the DVD and is only used once for all 12 chapters. There are no extras on this disc, such as a trailer, although you can choose to play it all at once or select an individual chapter. There is an insert with information on Lugosi. There are better VHS copies out there and in my own collection at one time I had an actual film print which had the Universal logo. I can't really recommend this DVD unless you don't have a copy of this serial at all. I wouldn't buy another disc from Whirlwind Media, the releasers of the disc, unless it was an extremely rare serial that probably would not be released any other way. Now if only Universal would get off its duff and start releasing their own serials instead of letting people with Public Domain prints do it, I might be a little bit more happy.

Description

A monstrous, eight foot tall robot with a fearsome face and sharp, fang-like teeth emerges from a vault in the laboratory of the mad Dr. Alex Zorka. The insane scientist hopes to create an army of such monsters in his bid to conquer the world. He's also developed an invisibility ray, discovered a deadly new element from outer space and mastered the secret of suspended animation. The U.S. government would like to take control of Zorka's scientific breakthroughs, but the scientist is more interested in vengeance and world conquest. Captain Bob West of U.S. Military Intelligence fights to put these incredible powers in safe hands, but he's up against a foreign spy ring hell-bent on obtaining Zorka's secrets for America's enemies. The good guys race to stop Zorka before his warped plans for massive world destruction can be implemented. The Phantom Creeps was compiled from episodes of the 12-chapter Universal serial of the same name. Bela Lugosi was at his performing peak, playing the role of Dr. Zorka with unbridled emotion. The film borrows many elements from Universal's previous horror film outings, including recognizable sets and music cues lifted from Frankenstein movies and scenes from Lugosi's earlier film, The Invisible Ray. The Phantom Creeps was directed by Ford Beeb

5 out of 5 stars "The Phantom Creeps (1939) ... Bela Lugosi ... VCI Home Video".......2006-10-30
