This fourth entry in the Gamera series found the titanic turtle paralleling the cuddly direction of his competitor Godzilla. When two young, star-gazing children investigate a spaceship that has practically landed in their backyard, they are whisked away to Terra, our undiscovered tenth planet whose two "groovy spacegirls" are all that remain of a once-superior alien civilization. But the boys soon discover that their seemingly friendly hosts have sinister plans in mind for them. Never fear, for Gamera comes to save them, flying through space to battle the spacegirls' guardian Guiron, a giant, rhino-like beast possessing a razor-sharp steel blade for a snout. This movie is truly suited for young children, for older kids, and especially for adults will chortle at the unintentional humor arising from the cheesy effects, underplayed roles, and possibly the worst dubbing job in Japanese monster history. Taken as comedy, adults will find this a real camp gem--when the two boys witness Guiron slice 'n' dice a laser-spewing Gaos, one of them proclaims: "What a monster!" --Bryan Reesman

This is the ONLY accurate review for Brentwood's ATTACK OF THE MONSTERS 10 MOVIE PACK. (NOT a Gamera review!).......2007-08-20
The "Gamera" reviews on this page are NOT at all related to the pictured item here: BRENTWOOD's "ATTACK OF THE MONSTERS 10 MOVIE PACK." This is actually a budget-priced collection of ten public domain fright flicks-- there are NO JAPANESE MONSTERS here!
SYNOPSES:
"The Ape Man" - Mad scientist changes himself into a hairy creature, then seeks a cure using human spinal fluid.
"Attack Of The Giant Leeches" - People who live near a swamp are disappearing orbeing found dead with odd wounds on their bodies.
"Creature From The Haunted Sea" - Crook murders some Caribbean islanders and blames their deaths on an imaginary sea monster. Then the real critter appears!
"Eegah" - Teenagers discover a prehistoric caveman, who goes on a rampage.
"The Giant Gila Monster" - The 1950s fad of macro-photography transforms an ordinary lizard into a gargantuan thing that threatens a small Texas town. Or, in the words of this movie's original advertising campaign: "ONLY HELL COULD BREED SUCH AN ENORMOUS BEAST. ONLY GOD COULD DESTROY IT!"
"Indestructible Man" - Lon Chaney Jr. in a modern retelling of the Frankenstein story. An executed criminal is reanimated as a mute killer that seemingly can't be stopped.
"The Killer Shrews" - People on a faraway island are terrorized by giant rodentia.
"The Monster Maker" - Mad scientist injects his enemies with a virus that causes them to become hideously deformed.
"Phantom From 10,000 Leagues" - A lame story about a radioactive rock on the ocean floor that causes a monstrous mutation.
"The Snow Creature" - Himilayan expeditioin captures Bigfoot. The monster escapes while being shipped to Los Angeles.
BRENTWOOD 10 Movie Packs offer a variety of cinematic genres at bargain prices. Video transfers of their "B" movies are pretty decent, as is sound. The manufacturer's hinged boxes house DVDs adequately, but be careful the hinged sections don't pull away from the main spine! They're not that easy to reassemble.
For a more modern collection of creepy movies from BRENTWOOD, their SCARED STIFF 10 MOVIE SET will leave you... well, you know!

Who Knew That Gamera Lettered In Gymnastics?.......2006-08-29
This has got to be one of the silliest of all the Japanese rubber monster movies. Two Japanese boys discover a flying saucer, fly it to a planet inhabited by Guiron, a ridiculous monster with a knife-snout and throwing stars in his nostrils (watch and learn,) and two space babes dubbed very poorly. They uncover a plot that involves both head shaving (a theme introduced early in the film by helpful policeman and Jerry Lewis impersonator, Detective "Cornjob"...don't miss the practice with the disemboweling cutlass) and brain eating. Somehow Gamera (a friend to all children if you'll recall your Gamera history) learns of the kid's distress, comes to the planet, defeats Guiron with a missile through his nostril (really), and takes the boys back to Earth in his mouth.
If this sounds muddled, it is: it is one of the more ludicrous plots of the genre, and is definitely worth a few laughs for the unadulterated cheese factor. My favorite scene in the film hands down is the gymnastics routine Gamera performs in mid-fight (followed by the daintiest dance you have ever seen a giant turtle monster do.) This is all, of course, utterly ridiculous, but therein resides the appeal.
gamera on dinosaur planet.......2006-07-02
i wave seen three gamera movies so far this is my favourite one because it has the most monsters. the story has gamera a prehitoric monster fithg a huge dinosaur on a distant planet here aliens have kidnaptte two kids. this films have the monsters gamera the giant turtle gyaos a pteratactyle from space and of course guiron the intergalactic reptile monster.
Sad to see what became of our favorite giant flying turtle.......2006-05-05
This was a rather sad entry into the Gamera series of movies. The plot, such as it is, is two young boys, Akio and Tom find a spaceship and go inside to explore. The ship takes off and lands on a planet that is in our solar system but is directly on the other side of Earth so we never saw it. The only inhabitants left are two attractive women and their monster, Guiron. Guiron is basically a lizard with a knife for a head. The women read Akio's mind to find out information and then plan to eat the boy's brains before flying to earth. But of course, Gamera, the friend of all children, comes to the rescue. He defeats Guiron and takes the boys back to Earth safely.
The dubbing in this movie is absolutely horrible. The monster fight scenes were comical. In fact, Guiron's whole look is ridiculous. Akio, one of the young boys, is obsessed with living in a world without traffic accidents and keeps calling planets "stars". Back on Earth the adults won't believe Akio's sister that he took off in a spaceship, except for one policeman, "Cornjob".
These Japanese monster movies are always fun to watch, but some of them also had at least a semblance of quality. This one has none. A very strangely written script, beyond terrible dubbing and lower than low-budget effects.
Bad Science but Good Brains!.......2006-04-19
I love zombie movies. Especially campy ones like Return of the Living Dead and Night of the Creeps. Imagine my pleasant surprise to find *brain lust* in a Japanese monster movie! And they're two of the cutest brain eaters you'd ever want to meet! So sad they never got to dine on Akio. Basically, a UFO lands lands on the outskirts of a Japanese village...two kids decide it would be an excellent idea to take a joyride while the alien's away...they race a giant space turtle...then land on a star(?) inhabited by the aforementioned ladies...the girls have a monster with a head shaped like an exacto knife named Gurion...Gurion cuts off a pterodactyl's leg with a laser beam...he also fights Gamera the space turtle a few times...the alien babes die and the kids return to Earth to spread the message of world peace and...ending traffic accidents! Boy is this film ridiculous. The science is so flawed you'd think one of Bush's cronys at NASA wrote the script. Landing on a star! Stopping traffic accidents! Come on guys..but you really can't go wrong with hot brain craving japanese girls and giant rubber monsters smashing each other up, can you? Recommended

A monster mash........2007-03-30
It's been a long time since I seen this movie. Way back in the 70s. Originally, AIP plan to show this film at drive ins, but release it directly to TV instead. The film is awesome. especelly when Barugon ate a guy trying get away with a diamond that was to lure the monster into the lake. This is the second entry in the Gamera series. I recomened this movie to all monster movie fans.
ALPHA DVD VERSION.......2006-12-08
AKA GAMERA VS. BARUGON THIS IS THE FIRST GAMERA MOVIE SHOT IN COLOR, BUT IT'S REALLY BARUGON WHO IS THE STAR OF THIS ONE! GAMERA APPEARS EARLY IN TINTED FLASHBACK SCENES FROM THE ORIGINAL B&W GAMERA FILM & THEN QUICKLY RETURNS TO EARTH FROM THE COSMOS TO BLOW UP A DAM. NEXT WE GET A STORY ABOUT 3 TREASURE HUNTERS WHO THINK THIS BARUGON-EGG IS SOME GEM WORTH A FORTUNE. ONE TREASURE HUNTER DIES FROM A SCORPION BITE & THE 3RD TRIES TO KILL THE 2ND & MAKE OFF WITH THE GEM. ANYWAY, BARUGON HATCHES & GOES ON THE EXPECTED DESTRUCTIVE RAMPAGE. TREASURE HUNTER #2 & HIS ISLAND/NATIVE? GIRLFRIEND RETURN AS DOES GAMERA FOR THE FINAL MONSTER BATTLE!!! TREASURE HUNTER SCUMBAG #3 & BARUGON GET THEIRS & ALL ENDS WELL...
PLAYED STRAIGHT, NO LITTLE KIDS TO GET IN THE WAY, THIS IS A PRETTY GOOD MONSTER BASH WHICH I'VE WATCHED SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE YEARS...
HOWEVER...THE ALPHA DVD IS REALLY PRETTY BAD WITH WASHED-OUT COLOR. I COMPARED IT TO THE EXTENDED PLAY VHS I HAVE " GAMERA VS. BARUGON " & THE VHS WINS HANDS DOWN. IT'S PACKAGED AS CELEBRITY HOME ENTERTAINMENT(1987) UNDER THEIR " CELEBRITY JUST FOR KIDS " SERIES WHICH FEATURES OTHER GAMERA FILMS AS WELL. THE COLOR HERE IS SO MUCH BETTER (AFTER I'VE ADJUSTED THE TRACKING). THIS IS THE SANDY FRANK EDITION WHICH I UNDERSTAND HAS AWFUL DUBBING( SEEMED JUST FINE TO ME-I LIKED THE INANE LINES ), BUT IS THE MORE VIOLENT UNCUT VERSION. WHATEVER...
ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT MY OLD VHS WAS LIGHT YEARS BETTER THAN WHAT ALPHA HAS OUT THERE ON DVD.
Fire vs. Ice.......2006-10-03
War of the Monsters is the second film that Gamera stars in. A new monster called Barugon is released from an egg, mistaken for an opal by treasure hunters, and brings death and chaos. Barugon seems to be a creature of cold and ice which makes it harder for Gamera to defeat. After all the giant turtle has problems moving when it gets too cold.
The plot is a tad slow moving but at least makes more sense than most monster movies. Gamera is not seen as good or as a Hero. He is just seen as energy hungry creature focusing on a new source of energy - Barugon. The extras are very interesting. The posters used in Europe seem to say Godzilla instead of Gamera. First film of Gamera in color.
Solid Monster Movie- Dreadful DVD quality.......2006-07-22
I grew up watching Gamera movies on Detroit TV. They'd have Gamera week and Godzilla week and I'd race home from public school to watch em all.
Now as Gamera went I wasn't as big a fan. The whole flying turtle thing and too many pathetic little kids in the story lines really turned me off. BUT recently I bought the 90's Gamera box set and was blown away! The 90's movies are really good (too bad they didn't make a part 4). And thus wanting more I decided to take a trip down memory lane and wander the mine field of cheesy hokey cruddy Gamera films. I started with the first one which is totally ruined by American actor scenes which just make an already stupid movie EVEN worse. I checked out Gamera vs Monster X cause it was my all time childhood fave (the sub scene). It's OK but leans towards kiddy film heavily, although the cheese factor pulls it from a complete nose dive and several clever scenes keep it above water too. Nervous about trying more I decided to read the other reviews and most people rated War of The Monsters rather highly (one I don't remember all that well) so I gave it a shot- hell, Alpha DVD's are cheap as dirt (with equal quality). And I got to say I was happily surprised. Why??
A) Solid SCI-FI adult story line! Some loopy stuff but hey it's about a flying turtle damn-it.
B) Good action scenes. Loads of monster crushing stuff and decent human action as well.
C) Plausible evil monster. Okay the rainbow ray is a bit sissy and the baseball bat tongue is really odd. But he grew up quick and mean. GOOD human villian too!
D) NO stupid little kids. I repeat NO stupid little kids.
E) Hot chick in lead role. Got to like that.
F) Good soundtrack- no kiddy music!
So why not 5 stars??
A) Not enough Gamera. When it ends you realize Gamera just wasn't in there enough to make it a 5. Good- but needed more.
B) BAD special effects- good enough for B-Movie fans. Better than "Reptilicus" but still goofy bad and loads of wires. Monster blood looked like chocolate milk (maybe the reason why is located in C).
C) Pathetic Alpha Video quality dub. For three seconds the colour goes perfect and you realize why you are squinting your eyes. AND for those few seconds you realize how good this movie could look if done properly. Especially the island dancer scenes! Come on Alpha Video it doesn't have to suck this BAD!!
In conclusion: Solid Monster movie. Dreadful DVD quality dub. But a keeper in my B-Movie collection. I have a feeling this movie may last longer than Monster X (oh those stupid little kids! And all that kiddy music. Gotta remember the telephone poles in the ears and the sub scene... cheese factor- cheese factor- plugging hydro wires into his heart by taking a sub into his mouth- classic cheese).
Bad print of good monster movie.......2006-05-15
"War of the Monsters" is a sad print (grainy, the ends cropped so sometimes the monsters' heads barely peek into either side of the frame) of a quite good monster movie. The human characters in this one actually inhabit a decent story of their own, and have some interaction with the monsters, rather than being mere spectators. Our beloved Gamera and his enemy for this battle Barugon are both cleverly conceived and well realized. There are no little kids in this one, which some will see as a blessing.

Shot in black and white, this 1965 Japanese monster movie was the Daiei company's answer to Toho's famous Godzilla series. A skirmish between U.S. and unknown "enemy" planes results in an atomic explosion over the Arctic which unthaws and unleashes the giant flying turtle Gamera, who eventually settles into Japan to wreak havoc while seeking out hydro-electric sustenance. However, this fire-eating (and breathing) behemoth displays a compassionate streak when he saves the life of a young boy who nearly falls to his death from a toppled lighthouse. Panicky scientists and military officials vainly try to find ways to destroy Gamera while the boy seeks to bond with his misunderstood reptilian hero. Like many of its celluloid Japanese monster brethren, Giant Monster Gamera has not aged all that well, but the well-staged and photographed assault on Tokyo makes for festive mayhem. Overall the film is good entertainment for young kids as well as the inner children of the adults who grew up on these monster mashes. --Bryan Reesman
Customer Reviews:
Tippy, oh, tippy........2006-10-03
OK, this film was seen on MST3K. So what? I happen to be a fan of the Gamera and Godzilla movies which is one of the reasons I enjoyed watching Joel and the Bots. Gamera The Invincible was made in 1965, in black and white. While being a Japanese movie it has a lot of inserted scenes for the American, English speaking, viewers. Some of these scenes, such as the television debate between two scientists, are funny because in some ways they reflect true life.
Gamera is a fire eating, flying giant turtle from a time before oxygen was used by life. Of course he wakes up from a million (billion) year old sleep by the explosion of an atomic bomb. Dropped by the evil Russians, of course. Anti-war film, anti-atomic weapons, pro-United Nations, pro-turtles, the film can be seen as a support for or against anything. An oldie buy goodie. The first of eight installments. Only eight? How sad. I think he was just as good as Godzilla.
If you only see one space turtle movie this year..........2006-04-19
...make sure it's the one with the brain lusting space girls! But that one is kinda intentionally comic, this is played as straight as a movie about a flying space turtle can be. Minunderstood monster is unleashed from his artic grave when a Soviet fighter is shot down and boom, we get a mushroom cloud. The studio debate between the Gamera-believing mythologist and the skeptical science writer is priceless! "He called me an ape!" "No, I called you an ignorant ape!" Reminds me of the evening talk shows on the cable news fronts...my, how far we've come that the satire still stings. The contrarian Senator brings to mind some of our finest in Washington today, head in the sand all the way. Brian Donlevy makes a convincing general. Writers (and George Lucas) take note...this is how child characters should be scripted for minimum annoyance. And Gamera himself, well, he looks like a man in a rubber turtle costume, but it works all the way to the ending. A unique ending, I might add, saving the Earth *and* leaving the door open for sequels. All in a day's work for...Nizo Takahashi! Doesn't have the same ring as Mighty Mouse *sigh*
I Am Invincible!.......2006-01-25
A flight of Soviet bombers "accidentally" flies over Alaska. U.S. interceptors shoot one of the planes down, causing a low-yield nuclear explosion. The nuclear explosion wakes a giant prehistoric turtle called Gammera by the local Inuit. Gammera attacks a model ship, flaming it with bad breath for good measure. Fortunately, the crew abandoned ship just in time. What excitement! Did I tell you that this turtle is so cool that it walks on two legs? Clever trick for a turtle.
This movie digresses for a while as Gammera is walking or flying in parts unknown. Various characters, including Brian Donlevy as General Terry Arnold and Albert Dekker as the Secretary of Defense, debate the existence of Gammera. This movie is relatively early in the monster genre because, as any self-respecting scientist of today knows, giant monsters exist and they are nearly all genetically programmed to attack Japan for reasons that scientists have yet to discover. Eventually the scientists and authorities bow to the overwhelming scientific evidence (footprints, sketches by small boys, anonymous phone calls, possibly including one from Kolchak, the Night Stalker) and recognize something must be done about this giant menace!
Gammera rescues a small boy (bless the monster's heart) before going off and frying a bunch of people in a Tokyo apartment building (this is one quirky turtle). To prepare for toasting Tokyo Gammera destroys a geothermal plant and chows down on the flames. I guess Gammera likes hot food. Somewhere around this point in the movie a scientist establishes that (drum roll) Gammera is not like other creatures!
The excitement builds as Gammera lands at a totally cool model airport and then begins to stomp around an excellent model of Tokyo. We catch a bit of a song titled "Gammera" that sounds suspiciously (to me) like the theme from the 1960s television series "Batman." It could be coincidence, or not.
Of course there has to be a plan to deal with Gammera, since all attempts to stop him have failed. Enter Plan Z! Before Plan Z we see model trains and a model laboratory and more models of other stuff, and then we see the Plan Z model. Woo hoo! This stuff is great! Of course, I have to leave the suspense of Plan Z to the viewer to discover.
After the success of "Godzilla," other Japanese studios attempted to capitalize on the monster fad. Modern audiences will find this attempt at giant monster horror more humorous than scary given today's sophisticated special effects. However, the models in the movie are excellent, and the laughs this movie generates for adults is worth a watch. Young children, on the other hand, may find this movie frightening (I know I did way back in the 60s), so just because you may not find the movie frightening, do not assume the little ones won't.
They just don't make movies like this any more. Thank goodness for that!
Gammera the Invincible.......2005-09-25
Watching this movie is a trip back to my youth. I used to watch these monster movies late at night on the local TV stations. It is sooooo corny that it is good. If a person did not grow up watching these movies they may not like them. But for those of us in the know they are just plain fun to watch. It is nice to see it on DVD.
DUMB!! But really funny in parts........2005-04-06
The first Gamera/Gammera movie with added American actor scenes. I was bored with the story but not the unintentional laughs. There are some real burst-out-laughing BAD dialogue and crazy scenes in this movie. My fav has to be when the Father orders his son to let go his pet turtle and the Father says,"I know it may seem cruel. It is. But it's for your own good". Thanks for the cruelty Dad! Or when they drop an H-bomb in the artic and free a jet propelled turtle from the dinosaur era, "a missing link to the leather back". Huh?? Ah yes back when turtles flew. Or when they drop an H-bomb in the artic and don't bother to tell the Eskimos anything. They just turn to the Chief and say, "Take care Chief" and they walk away. Maybe they should tell him not to go over there? Only he stops them and gives them a rare Eskimo carving dating thousands of years old depicting a giant turtle and some wavy lines. They look at the rock and babble widly at what the wavy lines mean, only they can't figure them out finally one guys says, "Lets ask the Chief" who's been standing there the whole time and he doesn't know. Sometimes we look back at old movies like this and think, "thats not bad for 1965". Until you remember that DOCTOR ZHIVAGO came out in 1965. I mean GAMERA IS BAD!! BUT in all fairness some of the miniature and monster scenes look great especially in black and white, like the attack on the nuclear power plant is very well done. It's the first ("American" version) of Gamera and therefore collectable. The nineties Gamera films are a 100 times better (although they have their problems too) and I would say forget the old Gamera movies and go with the nineties versions but this is the very first one and on Alpha Video its a very cheap way to pick it up. DVD quality is good enough.

even better than Guardian of the universe.......2007-05-18
This year movie celebrated it's 11th anniversary since it was firt released. About its 2 year anniversary on DVD. I first bought this movie along with Gamera 3 the revenge of Irish back in middle of 05 when I was living with my ex roomate before he moved out. In this movie it has been several months since Gamera first appeared and saved the world from Gyaos in the previous films. The girl who oriignally talked to gamera is back but as a secondary character with a small part in this movie. When and alien life form named Legion invades earth leave and carnage of destruction and death in its path as it feed of of fiber opetics to nsurvive. Once again gamera must do battle with millions of small legion and then onbe huge gigantic Legionb about 100 meter tall and long. This enemyt has destuctive new weapons. From his lighting energy beam blasted to super hot laer proton beam strucute like wipes. Can Gamera save all of Japan from utter destuction again or has the might turtle meet his match. find out in the thrilling conclusion. Even though this gamera is wossier and not omega beffy as the original gamera from the very first movie who was completly invulerable and could not be hurt by anyhting not even fall out from atomic weapons. The movie makes up with a weaker monster with good fighting scens and phonimal speciall effects and music. This movie should be for kids 13 and up due to heavy scifi violence, thematic elements, frequent gorry images, and intensity.
Alittle ways from the first Gamera.......2007-02-25
The plot is basic monsters fighting, some drama with the people. The special effects and monsters are better with some pretty good make up. The plot has a few flashbacks from things that happened to a young girl that drive the movie, as well as help build the characters. Enjoyed it myself and would say check it out if you like..
A Large Step Back In The Trilogy.......2006-02-17
There is no way to deny it. The Gamera Trilogy is one of the best sagas in movie history. "Gamera: GOTU" was top notch and "Gamera 3" was one of the greatest monster movies period. But sadly, this film falls short of the greatness. Instead of making long paragraphs, I'll make a list of what worked and what didn't.
WHAT WORKED
-Gamera, for one. I loved the big green man. Unlike the first of the series, this movie shows the creature with heart at its purest, not needing to have people describe it. You really saw that he's not a monster or a "best friend". He's a being that cares, and will take out anyone who gets in his way at the same time. Much like 2005's King Kong.
-Legion. She was a cool yet simplistic arch nemesis that could scare the snot out of anyone.
-The acting was good. You really saw within the characters that we passed up before.
-At times, the special effects were top notch. Especially the flying Legion scene and the appearing Gamera scene.
What DIDN'T WORKED
-The plot was very easy to follow, but it became incredibly confusing when they had random people explain it, which causes even more confusion.
-Yeah, I said the effects were at times top notch, but they later looked like they were rushed and out of place.
-The fights between Gamera and Legion were as dull as just shooting at eachother with little interest.
-I was bored to tears during the human scenes. Unlike the people scenes in G3, these scenes just had talking and talking with little emotion(minus the scene where the camera man goes sober).
-There was actually no purpose of this movie as far as the franchise goes. It could have just been erased and there's be no problem whatsoever.
So overall, in my opinion, this is the low point of a great series. Now, if you are collecting the entire trilogy, then this review probably change your mind. But as far as entertainment goes, look at the other two.
Am I the only one that heard this stuff???.......2006-02-01
I have loved Godzilla and the like since I saw my 1st Godzilla movie at a drive in when I was in 2nd grade (Godzilla vs Megalon; and I still love that drop kick!). My 4 yo son loves Godzilla movies and I'm very proud of the fact that he has latched on to Godzilla instead of the big purple money machine that is pushed off on so many kids.
When I found out about Gamera recently I started ordering some of the movies from Amazon w/o having seen them before. I bought the mid 90's Gamera trilogy as part of this new "influence" for my little boy. I try to screen this stuff before he watches it and turns out he's gonna need more body hair before he sees this one.
However; my review title refers to the 2nd English audio track that's on the DVD. After looking through the posted reviews I only saw one other note mentioning the "hillbilly" audiotrack and that review listed it as an extra. I stumbled onto this audio track and absolutely laughed like a crazed, white faced, purple suited villan!!!
There is a harmonica used for the incidental music, there's the same voice that keeps shouting out in times of chaos "HOLY CRAP", there's the pseudo-Clinton army guy, and enough toilet humor to make Matt Stone and Trey Parker proud.
As other reviews have noted, the movie is good for what it is, but watching it with the "hillbilly" audio track puts this movie in a class all it's own; and you gotta see & hear this stuff!!! For a 36yo guy that lives within 5 mi of the Appy Trail, I'm lucky enough to hear this verbal masacre of the language all the time. And yes many of the people that live in this area talk just like these guys (myself included).
Get the movie & laugh 'til it hurts!!!
Cool.......2005-12-08
A well done monster movie with incredible special effects. This movie doesn't focus on Gamera as much as it does the storyline. Well written and fun to watch, the Gamera movies have come a long way. This Gamera movie gives the Godzilla movies a run for its money and that's not easy to say coming from a huge Godzilla fan. This film gets my kudos. Believe the hype, THIS MOVIE IS EXCELLENT!

Not surprisingly, the ship launches the boys into outer space where they are saved from certain death by Gamera. OPERATION WHIRLYBIRD!!! GAOS WAS ONE EVIL MONSTER. COME ON, I ADMIT IT, I NEED MY KAIJU FIX......................................2007-05-18
Like alot of other people in there late 30s early 40s, I remember seeing "Return Of The Giant Monsters" on the 4:30 movie a few times in the 1970s. This film was originally released during Kaijus golden years in Japan on March 15th,1967. This movie is far out there and really wild. Even though there are miniatures and rubber suits used, Gaos was a well desighned monster and really an evil one. I must admit as a kid watching "Return Of The Giant Monsters" I really felt the evil of Gaos. As a child I cheered like hell for Gamera to kick this vampire bats backside. There is a moral story with this movie about over land development, kind of the trend in 1960s Godzilla movies at the time. As Gaos kicks the big Gs but in the beginning of the film, Gamera the giant turtle saves the day, Gamera demolishes Gaos at the end when we see pink blood spurting from Gaos. This film was out there and really my favorite out of all the Gamera movies. Miniatures and rubber suits aside, "Return of the Giant Monsters" is a well thought out low budget production. I really feel "Return of the Giant Monsters" was a well done, very creative monster movie, despite very limited special effects. The musical score in this movie by classical musical composer Tadashi Yamauchi, is incredible and really goes with the movie well, and has stayed with me well after I saw this movie 30+ years ago. I don't know what it is, but people like myself that are in there late 30s, early 40s kind of like watching people in rubber suits destroying fake cites. I guess it was the in thing for children, teenagers, at the time in the mid 1970s, remember these movies were watched before Star Wars revolutionized sci-fi movies forever in 1977. The 16mm print transferred to dvd is not a great print, but is alot better than what we saw on tv in the 1970s. Operation Whirlybird and sythetic human blood translates to alot of fun, you may have out grown "Return of the Giant Monsters" but it is still alot of fun to watch...............
Turtles, flamethrowing frogs and more.......2006-10-17
Return Of The Giant Monsters has Gamera fighting Gaos, a giant vampire bat, released from the Earth by active volcanos. Blood, forest fires and greedy village people. Great fun.
But that's not all. On this disc is another movie - The Magic Serpent. Samurai, giant monsters, magic, ninja, headless bodies, romance, Noble families and so much more. This is the movie that any MST3K fan would be proud to watch. Or any fan of monster movies or Samurai movies. It's just got everything.
In the end this is a must for any fan of Japanese movies.
Great Action, Bad Special Effects.......2005-03-27
Fake special effects!! But hey, its good ol` Gamera battling a human-eating bat named Gaos to save the world. Gamera is now fully the good guy and Gaos is perhaps the most evil monster with the most battles against Gamera. Good movie!
THE ORIGINAL AIP VERSION.......2004-08-17
It should be noted that this is the original AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL version
and not the mediocre SANDY FRANK version from the 1980s.
Gamera vs Gyaos + The Magic Serpent: Old-School Fun!.......2004-08-10
I remember watching "Return of the Giant Monsters," aka "Gamera vs Gyaos" when I was much younger. I loved every minute of it, because it was so "out-there," so nutty and contrived that I was foaming at the mouth with its kaiju-goodness. Now, I've found a movie that tops it: "The Magic Serpent."
I am very grateful to Retromedia for releasing both of these movies on DvD (and the Magic Serpent especially, because you probably won't find it anywhere else), because they are both such sheer campy fun that they would HAVE to be on the same DvD.
What's great about these films is that they aren't "good" per-say, but they aren't supposed to be. They're supposed to be FUN. People who criticize these movies for being cheaply made and poorly dubbed basically have nothing better to do with their time. It's pointless to really criticize these movies unless you're a real kaiju-fan and know about this kind of stuff. But even with the critical eye of the fanboy (or fangirl), these flicks are hard to nitpick about because they are so...much...fun!
The only thing keeping this movie from getting higher marks is the fact that there's nothing else on the disc besides a scene selection and Retro's website. Plus, the quality of the print is pretty bad, but that's to be expected, these being such old films, and Retro probably having limited resources.
I highly recommend this DvD to anyone who is a fan of good-'ol giant monster rampages, or to anyone who is looking to introduce children to the kaiju genre (but not before a few Godzilla movies).
