Highly recommended. All actors do an amazing job, even Camron! Easily one of the best hood movies out!

5 out of 5 stars What can I say about this movie!.......2007-05-11

This is one of the best kingpen movies I've ever seen! All the actors do a great job in this one, even Cam managed not to mess this one up. All I can say is, forget Scarface, this is the new movie all the up and comers will be looking at!

5 out of 5 stars Cam's Shining Moment = Another Rocafella Films Classic...................2007-05-09

Wood Harris and Mekhi Phieffer are great in this movie as 1980's New York drug kingpins. The surprise of the whole movie is Camron's convincing role as the villain of the movie.

4 out of 5 stars Gangsta Painted with Love.......2007-03-26

In a mood that deemphasizes the sex and violence in favor of the moral cost of the drug trade, this film has the easygoing persona of a soap opera with a bite that hits you afterwards.

5 out of 5 stars Not your typical hood movie-- through Az's eyes.......2007-03-04

The movie is definately above your average straight to video or Menace II Society clone. What is working for this film is a combination of many vital elements that combine to make quite a tasty slice of urban life. The film has plot, character development and outstanding acting. The stand out preformance in the movie is Mekhi Phifer playing one of the three Harlem drug dealers with such freshness. Cam'ron's role as Rico is quite good considering he is a rapper and not a trained actor. Then again, I guess the role Cam'ron played is not a strech consdering the type of lyrics presents in his music.

The plot of the movie is based around the life of three famous drug dealers in Harlem named Az,Alpo, and Richard Porter. In the movie their names are fictionalized into Ace[Az],Mitch[Richard Porter],and Rico[Alpo]. I will not bore with anyfurther details because I am sure the following has probably been overemphasized enough in other reviews. Understand, though, the movie was told primarly through the eyes of Az and not through Alpo. Alpo even complained that this movie presented him as a follower instead of a leader in the drug game.

Solid movie that defies the notion that urban drams are all cut from the same cloth.

Amazon.com essential video

Kiss Me Deadly starts off with a bang--a young woman (Cloris Leachman) in bare feet and a trench coat runs along a highway, frantically trying to flag down help. In desperation, she finally throws herself into traffic, and the car she stops belongs to detective Mike Hammer. The pace never lets up--we're not even 15 minutes into the movie and there's already been a murder, a mysterious letter, an attempt to kill Hammer, and, of course, a warning to just stay out of it. Hammer, tired of lowlife divorce cases, smells something big and can't let it go. The film is exciting, about as dark as a noir can get, and full of skewed camera angles and mysterious whose-shoes-are-those shots. At the center, of course, is Mike Hammer, a detective so cool he can win a fight with nothing more than a box of popcorn as a weapon. Hammer knows his opera singers as well as his amateur prizefighters, and he makes the ladies swoon, but he's far from a conventional hero. In fact, he's rather emphatically not a nice guy; Hammer happily whores out his secretary-girlfriend Velma to cinch up those divorce cases and has a penchant for slamming other people's fingers in drawers. Even the bad guys know he's a sleazebag. ("What's it worth to you to turn your considerable talents back to the gutter you crawled out of?") Ralph Meeker plays Hammer's ambivalence brilliantly, swinging easily between sexy and just plain mean. Kiss Me Deadly is just terrific. Stop reading this review and watch it already. --Ali Davis

3 out of 5 stars The Search for the "Great Whatsit".......2007-01-25

Kiss Me Deadly, 1955 film

The film opens on a highway at night, a woman is running down the road looking for help. A sports car stops to pick her up, she is crying. A police patrol is looking for a woman who escaped from an asylum! Mike Hammer tells them the woman is his wife. Later a big black sedan cut them off and captured them. Christina is tortured to death, then she and Hammer are put in his car which is pushed off the cliff. When Hammer recovers he is questioned by the "I.C.C." about what happened. Hammer is a PI who specialized in divorce actions with his beautiful secretary Velda. Upon his return to his office we see a 1950s telephone answering machine. Then Hammer goes to meet a client. He learned the name and address of Christina's roommate. (We hear a trolley in the street.)

Someone sent a gift car for Hammer. He looks it in the mouth and removes the extra features. Hammer then learns about some new people, and finds out more. He visits a rich man who tells him to drop the investigation. But trouble is his business, and he continues to look for something. Christina's friend Lily is afraid, and asks Mike to hide her. Then Mike's friend Nick is murdered. Velda talks about how some people are always searching for the "great whatsit"! Mike visits a bar to drown his sorrows. A message told him that Velda was abducted. At the office Mike is abducted and taken for a ride. They give him sodium pentothal to get him to talk. But Mike escapes from this trap. Later Mike finds a key and figures out where it belongs, and finds a hot secret.

When Mike goes to visit Captain Pat Murphy he gets a big surprise. Another body had turned up. Mike goes to visit an art gallery after hours, and finds a connection to the leader of the pack. There is an exciting ending after Gabriella opens the forbidden box. [Did "Raiders of the Lost Ark" copy this ending?] The director used a number of odd camera angles for this film set in Los Angeles. It is a sort of low budget film whose violent action is played down and off-screen. [Does it remind you of some TV programs from the 1950s? The search for a missing object may remind you of "The Maltese Falcon", a better novel and film.]

3 out of 5 stars "Kiss Me Deadly" displayed the developed Aldrich style..........2007-01-04

Amidst a virtuoso array of Expressionist lighting effects, Mickey Spillane's private-eye was deglamorized to become a thug motivated by material self-interest and sadistic violence: a brutish incarnation of Cold War paranoia and McCarthyist bullying... The climactic explosive images push the Fascist allegory still further: when Hammer's investigation leads to a modern Pandora's Box, 'film noir' enters the Nuclear Age...

"Kiss Me Deadly" had few similarities with Spillane's story about a gang of dope traffickers... Instead Aldrich reworks the plot so that the criminals are mixed up in the theft of priceless and high1y dangerous radioactive material which they are planning to smuggle to an unnamed power... The complicated story begins with Hammer picking up a scared girl on a lonely road at night and continues through the girl's subsequent death, a kidnapping and a series of very brutal killings...

Spillane's Mike Hammer remains the ultimate in violent private eyes... The killings seem to matter less than the sadism... One scene in which Hammer deliberately breaks the irreplaceable records of an Italian opera lover in order to get the information he wants is more repellent than any of the murders in the film...

Violent but stylish, distinguished by formalized low key effects, "Kiss Me Deadly" is a film of great power and remains unique for its mingling of art and pulp fiction...

5 out of 5 stars Classic Movie, Recieved in a Timely Fashion.......2006-11-10

It was exactly what I wanted, and it arrived quickly.

4 out of 5 stars It's 'The Bomb'.......2006-07-12

This late entry into the film noir genre has some harsh and memorable scenes and an ending unlike any other film noir. Of course, most of those weren't made during the A-Bomb scares of the mid 1950s, as this was.

The movie features a tough, no-nonsense Mike Hammer-like private eye, played well by Ralph Meeker, whose narration is a little dated but fun to hear. This is one of those noirs in which everyone is a tough-talking, tough-acting mug and one never knows who to trust. Except for Cloris Leachman, who is only in the first quick (but haunting) opening scene, the females in here are unfamiliar actresses but people with interesting faces and personalities.

That opening with Leachman is a real attention-grabber and is one of the best starts I've ever seen in a crime movie. It's very creepy, as is the unique ending. I also appreciated the cinematography in here a lot more once the DVD was issued.

5 out of 5 stars a late discovery.......2006-06-27

Great photography (reminded me of the Third Man - studied angles, perfect use of BW) and 1950's sets. The script is somewhat unbelievable and loose and the actors second rate, but who cares.

Description

Gritty, obscure musical drama stars Harvey Keitel as a talented young record producer who becomes embroiled in pop music's seamy underbelly when his clueless boss instructs him to ignore a hot new R&B act (played by Earth, Wind & Fire!) in favor of a troubled vocal trio. Cynthia Bostick, Ed Nelson, Bert Parks, and famed D.J. Murray the 'K' also star. Songs include the title track, "Shining Star" and "Reasons."

1 out of 5 stars Not a great flick.......2007-03-30

The movie sucks to be honest. Harvey Keitel kept it going but even he stunk. Best thing about this picture was the introduction of EW&F. The plot and the characters just didn't seem to flow with the story line...had a hard time keeping up with what was going on. The only reason I purchased this DVD was to watch EW&F. They should stick with singing.

1 out of 5 stars W I D E Screen or FULL Screen?!?!?!?.......2006-11-13

I just picked up my official copy of That's the Way of the World, and although the case and slip cover say it's 1:85.1 Anamorphic Widescreen, it's actually FULL SCREEN!!! I threw it in 2 different DVD players and it's definetly a FULL SCREEN DVD!

Is mine a dud?

Any comments? What's your copy? W I D E or FULL?

2 out of 5 stars would have been tight as a Documentary.......2006-09-10

I ain't seen this Movie in over 20 plus years, but as a Huge Earth,Wind&fire Fan i had to check it out again.it was corny back then&still is. Sig Shore who did "Superfly" brings back the Corrupt Captain from Superfly to play the Record Label head who sell this Record Company away. also Freddie from superfly plays a Minister&also Janitor in this film. Harvey Keitel plays the SuperStar Producer battling the Label big-wig at pushing the Group as EWF is known as in the Film. this Film in alot of ways was a pre-cursor to Prince's Purple Rain. EWF had the same Management as Prince later had &prince's character in PR was The Kid. some interesting things they share. but anyay the story line about the music industry is the same then as it is now. talk about irony? I gotta think that yeah this film was done in 1975,but the same rules&overall vibe applies in 2006. in truth Earth,Wind&Fire hardly have any real roles beyond on stage performance. it was cool to see Maurice White at the start of the film playing the African Instrument the Kalimba. it's a trademark of the EWF Sound. that era of EWF is them at there best.all the Original gang that was the Real FIRRE!! this film didn't do jack for there careeers because only die hard EWF fans remember it. the Album though "that's the way of the World" is one of there best. good to hear there instrumental breakdowns&it all coming together. this as a Film was cheap, poorly edited&under-written. it could have been way better if edited better, better written&also more story to connect. would have been a tight Documentary. I enjoyed the Music Performance scenes.

5 out of 5 stars EW&F should have been bigger than the Beatles. .......2006-08-19

This is a great movie by 1975 standards which is the reason I give it a five star rating, although the picture and sound does not compete with todays movies. It is quite entertaining, particularly the part where the producer was trying make a record. In doing so, he took a group with laughable talent, and produced a record which at first sounds horrible. But, he turns it into a fairly good sounding record through the use of studio musicians and audio gimmics. It was fascinating to me to see the composition evolve which became a hit, and to see how a record company manufacture and promote a new group even though EW&F was far superior than the new group the record company wanted to promote. The film is a good lesson on how records are made and how the record industry does business. This alone makes this DVD worth purchasing. I was a junior in college when this movie and soundtrack was made so this film is quite nostalgic for me and any other baby boomer of that period as the clothing and mannerisms are not mimic, but rather, it was filmed during that period. So, you get an accurate representation of that time. There is no question that the overall sound of Earth Wind & Fire, whose music transcends several categories and styles, is better than the Beatles. When the soundtrack was released everyone knew it was based on a movie, but no one I know saw it as it was not released in the market we were living at the time which was Durham, NC. But, I can tell you that had this movie been released at the time of the soundtrack, Earth Wind and Fire would have been bigger than the Beatles. This is a good film that I recommend being played through a home theater because the soundtrack can be heard througout, and sounds good for its time. This DVD gets my highest recommendation for ownership. You will not be disappointed.

2 out of 5 stars THE GIRL CAN'T HELP IT features... and is... one huge bust........2007-07-30

To say 1956's THE GIRL CAN'T HELP IT is a funny movie is a lie. It's not. Maybe it was once, but it's not now. No, TGCHI is a labored catastrophe, lost in its own vision of glee. It's cartoon characters (more on this coming up soon) marooned in an Acme world. The twists and ribbon'n'bows at the end of the movie are all forced and silly.

And it's no wonder, as THE GIRL CAN'T HELP IT was written and directed by Frank Tashlin (who did tons of great animation for Warners and Disney). But unfortunately, his cartoon vision doesn't translate to his live action movies. He crafted a misfire of a live action cartoon; when Mansfield walks by, milk bottles explode, blocks of ice melt, and eyeglasses shatter. The only thing missing was a bowtie spinning by itself. Tashlin even named these characters Tom and Jerri.

Amid the hackneyed plot, the film becomes a showcase for great recording acts like Little Richard, Abbey Lincoln, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Eddie Fontaine, Fats Domino, and (how's this for a bad name for a band?) The Chuckles. Each get to perform parts of their songs as the leads swim in and out of the scenes.

When the movie started, we all thought we were in for a treat. But then, nothing. Only a mildly amusing line here or situation there. In fact, I'm not sure I even understand what the title means in relation to the movie. Such a lackluster endeavor that the highlight for me was seeing frequent SUPERMAN (the TV series) villain Milton Frome show up for a minute.

4 out of 5 stars She puts the HOUR in hour-glass!.......2006-10-26

Reportedly, Jayne Mansfield's measurements were 40-18-35. Tell that to anyone, and they won't believe it because that sounds so unreal. Well, after seeing Jayne in that red dress, they'll believe!

Jayne is simply wonderful. Her known off-screen spirit and likeability (the stories told about her are great! When she starred in the broadway version of "Rock Hunter", she would remain into the wee hours of the night until every fan's autograph was signed; when tour busses approached her home, she would run out and great them!) really shine through in the movie.

As great as Jayne is in this movie, it's really too bad that her entire career was that of a caricature of Marilyn Monroe. Caricatures never gain the appeal and stardom of the original. And, when one looks at the early home videos of the young Jayne with her natural dark hair, she looks like a cross between Ava Gardner and Sophia Loren! One can't help but wonder how far she would have gone if she had simply been herself, and not one of many Marilyn wannabees.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to see why Jayne's daughter is an Emmy winner........2006-10-09

Ignore the glitz, Jayne Mansfield like Marilyn Monroe beneath the hype is a great actress. Fun to watch. And The Girl Can't Help It is one of the best rock 'n roll movies of the fifties. I first saw this film fifty years ago and then just the other night. My wife and I loved it. Buyer's tip. It is much much cheaper to buy the collection set that has this film, Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter, and The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw. It is over priced to buy it as a single.

    5 out of 5 stars fantastic!!.......2006-07-03

an absolute time capsule of 1950s rock and roll. some of the best rock of the day. unfortunatley the artists dont get to perform the entire songs, but they are still great. and what can be said about jayne mansfield? she is stunning! seeing her in that red gown is reason enough to buy this movie. the supporting players are great. (note: juanita moore, annie johnson from lana turners "imitation of life" appears as the maid, later nominated for an acadamy award in 1959). this movie is a real treasure.

3 out of 5 stars The movie that left a mark of frustration.......2005-05-25

If there is such a thing as a "love and hate" movie this must be it. A movie that attracted all young people all over the world, showing in cinemascope and stereo for the first time "rock and roll". The Platters, Eddie Cochran, Little Richard, Gene Vincent, Fats Domino and more, "trying" to do their best, and I mean "trying" because they were interrupted and couldn't finish their songs. I still remember the feeling, I was 13 when I saw this one, and the moment I heard "be bop a lula" I was in ecstasy. An ecstasies that didn't last too long because it was interrupted by a stupid silly line from a stupid silly Marilyn bad imitation. A song that only lasts 2' 35". An ecstasis that soon became a fury, and yes I kicked a lot of empty seats and left the movie theatre in pure frustration. I always wonder if 20th century still has the cut material and could put it together just to make "The unfinished songs from "The girl can't help it"". Wouln't it be great if somebody comes with the idea of restoring all those legendary rock and roll performers singing their entire songs, instead of so many documentaries about the history of rock that abruptly interrupt the songs just when you are starting to enjoy them. For the music I gave it a 10 for the plot and the rest a 0, My total is 2 1/2.

      Product Description

He wrote his name in blood on the sidewalks of New York and made himself the Boss of all Bosses. Arriving in America at the age of nine and embarking upon a life of crime at age 14, Charles "Lucky" Luciano rose through the ranks of the New York Mafia like a pistol shot. By the age of 34, he was running the Sicilian mob like a U.S. corporation diversifying the rackets, organizing the gangs and running his own political candidates. Examine Lucky's 30-year career as CEO of Murder, Inc. through rare interviews and extensive archival footage. Mob insiders recall the history-making meetings held in Luciano's Waldorf-Astoria headquarters. And naval records reveal how his top-secret war efforts earned him parole from a 50-year sentence. Journey into the dangerous world of La Cosa Nostra for the definitive portrait of one of the most notorious criminals in history.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Terrific.......2002-02-05

I can't believe how much they did with such a small budget. A ton of fun! Especially recommended for fans of Jerry Doyle.

        4 out of 5 stars Hey! A smart B-movie!.......2001-05-03

Very cute send-up of the film noir genre in a futuristic world. The acting isn't the best (except from Stacey Williams) and there's an irritating narration throughout, but otherwise light years better than most low budget films of its type.

1 out of 5 stars Kinda Like "Westworld" from the 70s, but bad..........1999-09-26

Whooo! I don't know what movie that first guy was seeing- maybe he got a directors cut or something-but this was bad. I mean especially bad. This is one of those flicks where the actors are using old "lazer tag" pistols as props. Actually that was kinda funny. Avoid at all costs. Don't say I didn't warn you...

4 out of 5 stars Witty and suspensful.......1999-09-11

For a B-movie, this possesses a great deal of verbal humor and imagination. Very good performances by Jerry Doyle and Stacey Williams elevate it far above bigger budget films of its type.
