There's a war goin' on in this bit o' blarney, but it's more than the feud between the fairies and the leprechauns, upon which most of the overwrought tale hangs. It's also a struggle between competing, derivative story lines in this bloated, plodding film that can't decide what it wants to be. It's part Romeo and Juliet, via the seemingly doomed romance of the princess fairy and teenage leprechaun; part contemporary romance, with an uncomfortable-looking Randy Quaid in the romantic lead; and a large part unfocused fable that fills out its Irish stew with a feud reminiscent of Ireland's Catholic-Protestant conflict while throwing in fantastical Braveheart-style battle scenes and Riverdance-like interludes. The most stunning scenes are the fairy sequences that take place in a futuristic castle in the sky (think Wizard of Oz meets Star Wars) and the epic battles with innovative leprechaun bark-and-stick armor. It all makes for a jumble of a long movie, which originally aired as a miniseries on NBC. --Valerie J. Nelson

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful movie !.......2007-07-17

I bought this movie for my sister who loves this movie very much, and when I watched it with her I enjoyed it very much !!
Great actors and most of all GREAT MUSIC !!

5 out of 5 stars Really good made for TV movie.......2007-05-09

This is one of my daughter's all time favorites, since she was about 9 yrs. old - she is now 14 and still likes it.

3 out of 5 stars Great movie, questionable casting.......2007-04-09

I enjoy this movie a great deal. In fact if someone other than Whoopi Goldberg was the Banshee, I think it would have been great. Now let me state up front I love Whoopi Goldeberg. She was great in Star Trek series, and I love all her comedy movies. I own most of them. However, putting her in as the Banshee in this movie is like putting a Irishman in as a globetrotter in a movie about the Harlem Globetrotters. It doesn't fit, so please stop doing it whoever is responsible for this kind of off culture/race casting. It reminded me how they cast Will Smith as James West for "Wild, Wild, West". Next I suppose they will cast William Macy as "Shaft". I don't like racism, and I certainly don't like casting white or blacks in movies that aren't appropriate to the culture or the theme of the movie. It is like when they use to make up white men and women to be Indians, Chinese, or blacks. Very inappropriate. So had they cast someone other than Whoopi Goldberg as the Banshee I would have given it 4 stars.

    4 out of 5 stars good.......2007-03-23

I got this for my daughter. She has wanted it after she saw it on TV years ago. I liked the movie, thought the graphics was very good.

    3 out of 5 stars A Wee Review.......2007-03-10

Don't let the three stars fool you. This is a well done, great acted, fun story. It's long and sometimes you wonder where it's going. That's my take, and Whoopi Goldberg is just so NOT right for the part that it detracts from the rest of the story. Luckily she's not in it much. I like her as an actress, I just didn't like her performance here. Randy Quaid on the other hand is great, and his relationship with his love interest and her crazy brothers, and even one of the Wee folk are what really make this movie. Even more so than the story of the Fiery's.

I recommend this story, but It's just ok.

From the people who created the made-for-TV special-effects extravaganzas Merlin and Arabian Nights comes In the Beginning, the story about the travels and travails of the tribe of Abraham (Martin Landau). Set around the year 2000 B.C., the narrative opens with "Genesis 12," wherein the Lord has kicked Abraham and company out of their country to a land of milk and honey to be named later. In order to keep up the morale of his followers while on the road, Abraham gives a sermon that sums up God's creation of the universe. By illustrating this sermon with stock footage and special-effects shots, the producers are obviously making a connection between sermons of old and popular entertainments of today. From there, the twists and turns of the Old Testament are treated like a soap opera. Family dramas take center stage, whether it's God testing Abraham by telling him to kill his son in sacrifice, Joseph (famous for his amazing Technicolor dream coat) gaining power in Egypt after being sold to slave traders by his brothers, or one of the many other stories of brothers fighting (Cain and Abel, Isaac and Ishmael, etc.). The events that have been visualized in movies before (the plagues, the parting of the Red Sea, to name but two) pale in comparison to their earlier incarnations, but the bigger picture is that In the Beginning works best as the Bible for beginners. --Andy Spletzer

5 out of 5 stars Great Acting, Great Sets, Costumes and Scenery! Faithful to Scripture, Overall!.......2005-09-03

I like this DVD. Martin Landau is once again good in yet another Bible movie for him. The best treat is Jacqueline Bisset as the prettiest Sarah that I have seen in a Bible DVD!

They show Abraham telling Bible stories to his people, then they move into the Abraham story, and on through the story of Joseph. It's an acceptable made-for-TV attempt with familiar actors and a decent attempt to be true to the essence of the Bible stories.

This film from 2000 is from Hallmark/FHE/Artisan, who made a monster the year before, with their 1999 version of NOAH'S ARK, starring Jon Voight and Mary Steenburgen. STAY AWAY from that version of Noah's Ark! But it is really surprising that a year later they made this one, IN THE BEGINNING, which is actually quite good.

4 out of 5 stars good cast and above average TV production.......2004-07-26

Originally a 4-hour miniseries for NBC, with a large international cast of well-known actors, this telling of parts of the first five books of the Bible is interesting, and on the whole flows well, though it crams a lot of story into one film, therefore skipping many major events.
It starts with Abraham, as he travels to the land of Canaan, in about 2000 B.C., and along the way he recites the narrative of the Creation (which has some nice visuals), the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve, their temptation (the fruit here looks more like a small fig in a very thorny tree) and their expulsion from Eden.

There are some fine performances, among them Martin Landau as Abraham, Jacqueline Bisset as Sarah, Bill Campbell as Moses, Amanda Donohoe as Potiphar's wife, and Fred Weller as Jacob. Eddie Cibrian as Joseph seems at first out of place, looking more like a modern day hunk, but he grows with the part, and has the most touching scene in the film, when he is reunited with his father Jacob. In the small part of Jethro, the great Alan Bates is marvelous. Other name actors include Diana Rigg (mature Rebeccah), Geraldine Chaplin (Yocheved), David Warner (Eliezer), and Christopher Lee is a theatrical, entertaining Ramses I.

At times there's quite a bit of license taken with scripture (for instance, there is some incredulous dialogue between Moses and Jethro after the parting of the sea, where Moses doesn't seem to have much faith in God), and similar to other TV Bible films, the parts that take place in Egypt are full of gaudy sets and costumes, as well as some characters who have an almost Alice Cooper look in the makeup department, especially Pharaoh's magician (Victor Spinetti).
Filmed in Morocco, with lovely cinematography and score, this one is certainly worth a rental if you like Bible epics.

5 out of 5 stars THIS WAS A GOOD MOVIE!.......2004-03-08

I recommend this movie to anyone who desires to know more about the events that occurred in the Old Testament, this is a close as you'll get to the actually truth. I bought the VHS and was so pleased with the characters, costumes, location and scenes that I loaned the movie to friends and other family members. Well, somewhere along lending it out someone liked it so much never returned it to me. So, I purchased another one. I also own the Ten Commandments and it is a good movie as well, however, if you know the Bible, you will also know that Mose had no romantic relationship with an Egyptian princess. (this love triangle was added to the movie). All I say is if you want to know what really happened in biblical times, buy this movie. I'm sure after you've seen the movie it will build up your curiousity to read the bible. It's a keeper.

    5 out of 5 stars Yeah! It's about time!.......2003-05-14

I was very impressed with In the Beginning. Are the others reviewers insane? The Prince of Egypt or The Ten Commandments are better films? The Prince of Egypt places the story of the Exodus to about 1220 B.C. and not 1446 B.C. and Heston's Egypt is about as antiseptic as a floor of an operating room. You could perform surgery on those palace floors. Landau and the others are great. At least the script writers read the book you know, you've heard of it, The Bible. In the Beginning is biblically accurate and outdoes the current Jesus films, the Noah's Ark fiasco and some of the TNT films. This gives me firm confidence that NBC has writers that are literate unlike the other networks.

2 out of 5 stars Great Beginning...but...not so great after that..........2002-04-10

I originally watched this miniseries when it aired on NBC in the fall of 2000. I specifically remember watching the first 2 hours and realizing I could find a better way to spend my time than sitting through the last two hours.

The performances are uniformly mediocre, with only Martin Landau standing out as Abraham. The scenes of creation, including Adam and Eve, as well as the Fall, are quite nicely told through flashback, as Abraham tells the story around a campfire. But, it quickly falls apart after that.

If you really want to watch the story of Joseph, Moses, and the rest, I recommend watching the animated films JOSEPH and PRINCE of EGYPT. If you want to watch a classic story of Moses, go with THE TEN COMMANDMENTS--it's a classic that still rates close to 5 stars!

    Product Description

Starring Tony Award winner Brent Carver and Rachelle Lefevre, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow faithfully recounts the classic Washington Irving tale, successfully capturing the mystery and romance that have eluded other screen efforts. Connecticut Yankee Ichabod Crane (Carver) arrives in the rural Dutch community of Sleepy Hollow and assumes his position as the new schoolteacher. Though the outsider is widely regarded with suspicion, the daughter of the area's wealthiest farmer, Katrina Van Tassel (Lefevre), is charmed by his manners and education. But Ichabod's attentions to the lovely Katrina are not welcomed by handsome blacksmith Brom Bones (Paul Lemelin), and when Brom tries to scare Ichabod by posing as the" Headless Horseman" of local legend, they are paid an unexpected visit-leaving behind a mystery that has enthralled audiences for generations.

2 out of 5 stars Faithful but dull.......2007-03-08

This made for TV Canadian adaptation of the Washington Irving story is more faithful than the Tim Burton movie. (Of the many things that were wrong with Tim Burton's version, perhaps the most jarring was the decision to made the headless horseman a real person, when in the book it is clear it is a prank to scare Ichabod Crane out of the village). Unfortunately, the fact that this is a faithful version does not necessarily mean that it is an interesting film to watch. In fact, it is pretty dull. The unknown actor portraying Crane doesn't help a lot, either. (Other actors in the movie are more appealing). Still, if you have read the original story, you might be interested to watch this version.

2 out of 5 stars Somewhat Overdone Version Here.......2006-10-26

It's not as bad as the version done by Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci, but close enough. I did find it intriguing as it started off with a conversation with the author Washington Irving. I love this story, but there were some things brought out here that I wasn't quite ready for, and that was the truth the lovely Katrina actually despised Ichabod, and turned him down for marriage. I guess it's because I can identify with this rejection as I've been rejected before. It also showed a stern Ichabod, and one who tried to show how spiritual he was by singing loudly, and impressively in the church to the point where he was able to sweet-talk the minister into letting him be choir director, and for what may have been immoral motives. A far cry from the Ichabod that I remember reading about, and hearing about as he had a humble nature about him. I've heard many versions of this story, and some were more memorable than others, but it's a story that you'll never forget, but when it comes to this version I just rather soon forget it. It's a version that just tried to be too truthful, and for those of us who still see the romantic side of Ichabod and Katrina we tend to not want to know that Katrina actually didn't love him at all. At least there was no laughing when the Headless Horseman showed himself.

5 out of 5 stars Much better than Burton's version!.......2006-07-24

Sorry, but I strongly disagree with the other reviews here about this version of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow". Tim Burton's version, whilst midly entertaining, is a travesty of an adaption of the original story by Washington Irving. As a historian, I highly recommend this version, given it's faithfulness to the original story, and it's overall authentic portrayal of life in 1790's America. There are a few details that they get wrong, such as Squire Van Tassel's statement that the Battle of Sleepy Hollow was in 1774, a year before the Revolution began, but overall, someone did some research for this version. The costumes, material culture displayed, the portrayal of the Dutch "Yorkers" and their contempt for "Yankees" and taxes -- I would use this in my history class.

In short, if "it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Burton's version is just another historical, inauthentic and inaccurate mess that history teachers, librarians and museum folks have to clean up.

This one is on my shelf, right next to "The Devil and Daniel Webster", another classic of American folklore and literature.

2 out of 5 stars Really a waste of your time.......2005-10-19

Read S. Medeiros's review below. I don't mind saying s/he pretty much nailed it. I had to watch this movie in installments because I just couldn't sit there for the entire duration. Tim Burton's version has its own share of problems, the biggest being making Washington Irving's tale pretty much an action/adventure movie that is seriously lacking in script writing -- as other reviewers have said. Still, Burton's effort is a long way better than Hallmark's. I really didn't feel a thing with this movie, not fear, not wonder, not delighted or tickled. Maybe just relieved when it was over. Indeed, the Headless Horseman was pretty much laughable, and only appeared at the very end. You almost felt lucky though that you hadn't seen him earlier because he was just as daft as Brent Carver's Ichabod.

That is, contrary to S. Medeiros, I was not especially impressed with Brent Carver's portrayal. Maybe it was indeed the Ichabod from the novel to a tee. However, if that's the case maybe Burton had it at least partly right when he adapted Ichabod to be one that the viewer can have at least the remotest affinity with -- perhaps the difference between something you are to read and something you are to watch, I'm not sure.

Watch it if you catch it on TV, and you're a big fan of the tale. Otherwise, really, do yourself a favour and stay away. And I say this as a big fan of the tale, and it does pain me to be critical of C-grade actors that are trying so hard and truly have more acting skill than I would ever have if I were to study drama for 10 years. That said, again, this movie is just not fun. You don't feel glad to have watched it despite its flaws, as sometimes happens.

    1 out of 5 stars Highly Disappointing.......2003-10-23

The Hallmark version is not faithful to Washington Irving's text. Hallmark has taken many liberties with the plot and has significantly altered the personality of nearly every character. Gone are the charm, wit, suspense, and beauty that make Irving's story a timeless classic. As a huge fan of Irving's tale, I find I can hardly stand to watch it.

      4 out of 5 stars campy.......2004-02-05

Okay, this is the type of movie you take with a grain of salt. If you like low budget movies that are corny, bad effects, and are generally laughable then you might enjoy Carver's Gate. The movie mixes videogame aspects with a post-future world where people plug into the game in hopes of reaching The Heaven level where they can transend. Along the way there is a murder involving the creator of the game, an investigation, and a rift between the videogame world and the real world that sends creatures from the game into reality. The acting is very bad but at the same time justified with the campy plot. Some of the scenes are soo funny and badly done that you have to run it back to catch what you missed because it was so lame. I personally liked this movie alot, but then again I thought BattleQueen 2020 was classic. This is a movie that many will not like nor will they even care to watch it. Is my life better now that I've seen it? No. But it did make me laugh and it did entertain me throughout, and as a whole I would reccomend it to those that like the farfetched and lame Sci-Fi.

Carver's Gate is a low budget (2 million$) sci-fi adventure and the producers must have put every cent on the screen. This film came out before a lot of the Virtual Reality adventure films, and the good thing abot that is that before the cliches were set by Hollywood some thought and fun inteligence went into this production.

I don't want to give it all away, but I paid attention when an early low-budgeter like "Carvers Gate" deals with levels of VR and subtle systems breakdown. The sets are spectacular in a futuristically Stalanistic kind of way. The acting is uneven, but not bad for this budget range and Michael Pare is excellent, so is his (unknown) female co-star Maria Manuel. The producer team seems to be Jackson and Dor again, who always seem to do something interesting for the money. Pay attention to the detail -some lovely satire (In one scene a Virtual Game boasts of the entertainment promissed in "sex world" with the line "Remember she's not real, so she has no rights!" It's just a little more dangerous and zingy than your typical low budget sci-fi fair.

I thought this movie was really sad at the end. It moved me because I have lost dear people also. One of the best parts of this movie was the SCORE! Anyone know where the soundtrack is?? I really gotta buy it! Please let me know if there is one! And see this, especially if you're moved by sad scenes.

WOW!! This movie had me with tears coming down my eyes! I highly recommend the move. I borrowed it from my aunt and WOW! If you want a great love story taking place in the early time of history its wonderful. For any hopless romantic. I say it has a bit of Titanic and Tuck EverLasting w/ Edward scissorhands! If you like those movies this is the one for you!
