When you consider that old-fashioned tearjerkers are an endangered species in Hollywood, a movie like The Notebook can be embraced without apology. Yes, it's syrupy sweet and clogged with clichés, and one can only marvel at the irony of Nick Cassavetes directing a weeper that his late father John--whose own films were devoid of saccharine sentiment--would have sneered at. Still, this touchingly impassioned and great-looking adaptation of the popular Nicholas Sparks novel has much to recommend, including appealing young costars (Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams) and appealing old costars (James Garner and Gena Rowlands, the director's mother) playing the same loving couple in (respectively) early 1940s and present-day North Carolina. He was poor, she was rich, and you can guess the rest; decades later, he's unabashedly devoted, and she's drifting into the memory-loss of senile dementia. How their love endured is the story preserved in the titular notebook that he reads to her in their twilight years. The movie's open to ridicule, but as a delicate tearjerker it works just fine. Message in a Bottle and A Walk to Remember were also based on Sparks novels, suggesting a triple-feature that hopeless romantics will cherish. --Jeff Shannon

SAME OLD STORY NEVER TOLD SO WELL!.......2007-09-12
This sweet little love story rises above all it's cliches because of the likable stars and story that moves along briskly. The love story in sad enough, but the Alzheimer's angle really tears your heart out! I watched this because my wife wanted to watch it on our anniversary. I was surprised how much I liked it.....so guys don't squirm too much if your babe wants to watch this one, it's a good story and I admired Gosling's tenacity and devotion to his true love. One of the better romances I've seen in a while, so I rate it 4 stars, but it's definitely a 5 tissue movie! This was mostly because of the Alzheimer's part of the film, it's a tragic disease and having dealt with it in my family it was a little too close to home. The DVD transfer looks very good and the are some interesting extras.
BEST.LOVESTORY.EVER. Ryan Gosling is AMAZING!.......2007-08-31
I fell in love with not only this beautiful story but Ryan Gosling!!!! This is just a fantastic movie and I really can't find better words to describe it. Watch it. Own it. Love it forever!! It is my all-time favorite!!
I'm still a sucker.......2007-08-27
...for these tear jerkers. This movie will go down as a romance classic- a forbidden love about two people from the wrong side of the tracks-Romeo and Juliet for the 1940's, if you will. This film hits all my cheesy love spots and turn up aces with me. McAdams/Goslin were great as well as Garner and Rowland. This is a must see for all Chick movie lovers. Highly recommended.
~Have a box of tissue handy~.......2007-08-08
Although I'm not going to give away any spoilers ... this is a love story like no others. I think that everyone can relate on some level to this movie. You will fall in love with this couple & become drawn in to their story. I recommended this to my mother who after the movie called up crying her eyes out. Even my husband enjoyed this movie. If your looking for a movie that will make you laugh, cry & touch your heart ... this is a must-see.
Beautiful Tale Well Told.......2007-07-25
If you haven't read the book, the movie will not leave you feeling short changed.
A marvellous story about lovers, life and loss.
Highly recommended.
If you're interested, once you watch the movie, read the book The Wedding - it is the follow up from The Notebook.

It's been said that this 1948 classic has been responsible for the ballet lessons of more young girls than any other film. It's not hard to understand why: Michael Powell and Emerich Pressburger's dark fairy tale presents the ballet as an exquisite, magical work of art; but under the theatrics and glory is an all-consuming lifestyle with the power to destroy those who love it perhaps too much. Moira Shearer practically glows as Victoria "Vicky" Page, a young woman consumed by a will to dance who is accepted into the highly prestigious ballet company run by perfectionist Boris Lermontov (Anton Walbrook). Meanwhile, a gifted young composer, Julian Craster (Marius Goring), is brought on board as an orchestra coach, and later conductor and composer of the ballet that will make Vicky's name: The Red Shoes, one of the most beautiful and dramatic dances ever captured on film. Professional and personal jealousies soon pull this creative team apart, however, and Vicky is torn between her love of Julian, her responsibility to Boris, and her need to dance. Powell and Pressburger recast Hans Christian Andersen's sad story as a modern romantic melodrama, highlighted by beautiful dances and shot, not as stage ballets, but rather as expressionist cinematic dramas on impossibly grand sets awash with bold color and beautifully captured in glorious Technicolor by cinematographer Jack Cardiff. It's a brilliant melding of dance and drama as Vicky's real life mirror's the tragic story she danced in the Red Shoes ballet. --Sean Axmaker
Description
A glorious Technicolor epic that influenced generations of filmmakers, artists, and aspiring ballerinas, The Red Shoes intricately weaves backstage life with the thrill of performance. A young ballerina (Moira Shearer) is torn between two forces: the composer who loves her (Marius Goring), and the impresario determined to fashion her into a great dancer (Anton Walbrook). Criterion is proud to present The Red Shoes in its DVD premiere.

This is the kind of film that truly inspires people to become dancers, filmmakers, artists, etc., etc...........2007-09-09
I am a huge fan of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. Their colloboration was one of the greatest and most unique in the history of cinema. This is probably their greatest film, even though there are others which are just as magnificent. This film is about ballet, the love of art, and the burning that artists have in their desire to create. I love the 20 minute ballet sequence in the middle of the film. The film "leaves" the stage, and we get a beautiful, emotional, poetic interpretation of The Red Shoes. It's almost like it's own little movie. Certain films like this can't really be described to anyone's satisfaction, as they inspire many emotions and feeling, and words cannot convey these things most of the time. The film is so beguiling and beautiful that it still inspires many filmmakers, dancers, musicians, and artists to this very day. One of my favorite exchanges of dialogue sums up this film....
Lemontov...why do you want to dance?
Vicki....why do you want to live?
Lemontov...I don't know exactly why, but I must.
Vicki...that's my answer too.
We must create...we have no other choice....
Thank you Netflix.......2007-08-30
If not for that I would have missed this one entirely. I Don't usually go in for "Classic" movies, but I'm a dance movie addict Ballet especially, so I had to give The Red Shoes a go. And I must say that this film is absoluely beautiful from top to bottom.
Moira Shearer Glows, as Victoria Page. who wants nothing more in life then to dance, and never even considered love until... I'm telling you it's like you have to watch her. Her performance is hypnotic. She makes the film worth watching all by herself.
Anton Wallbrook as Boris Lermontov is so wonderfully sinister. the guy you love to hate and all. Wallbrook really masterd Lermontov's downward spiral. he was truly unhinged by the end, An amazing talent.
Marius Goring as Julian Craster was missing somthing for me. His performance was tepid at best, He just didn't seem to own the part. I don't know He bothered me.
The Red Shoes Ballet sequence was breath taking, unbelievable. I was gaping at the screen. and when it was performed again at the end of the film. I was speachless. Gut renchiing.
I highly recommend it to any one looking for a memorable viewing experience.
the first of great dance movies.......2007-07-06
This movie always reminded me of my training in New York. It is excellent also for getting oneself back to class.
The Red Shoes.......2007-06-25
Close to sixty years after its initial release, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's best-remembered classic remains one of the most sumptuous Technicolor films ever made. The ballet sequences (choreographed by Robert Helpmann) are breathtaking, but never eclipse the human drama, with Walbrook powerful as the icy Lermontov, and Shearer a red-haired vision, whether still or in motion. One of the great achievements in film, and a must for family viewing, particularly for those with daughters.
dance dance dance little lady -- leave tomorrow behind ..........2007-05-12
this backstage fantasia is the antithesis of baz luhrmanns overwrought "moulin rouge". co-directed by michael powell and emeric pressburger, it ranks as among the most sumptuous feasts for the eye you can ever see. moira shearer made a stunning debut as the debuting ballerina whose real life is a parallel to the starring role in her new ballet, caught in the maelstrom of a satanic impresario who can give her what she wants but only at the cost of her soul (& eventually her life). while it is not QUITE on the par with their other ballet masterpiece "tales of hoffman" (and the musical score is a primary culprit there), it is still a must-see.

This direct-to-video feature, which serves as a lead-in to the upcoming Disney animated TV series, continues the adventures of Buzz Lightyear from the Toy Story films--and introduces the new supporting cast. Buzz battles the evil Emperor Zurg, who steals the "Unimind," a device that enables three-eyed aliens to function as a single intellect. The aliens, referred to as "LGMs" (little green men), form the support crew that keep Star Command running, but as individual thinkers, they're inept. During the course of this tongue-in-cheek adventure, Buzz acquires the sidekicks who form Team Lightyear: Booster, an oversized, overeager alien; XR (short for "Experimental Ranger"), one of the aliens' less successful robot inventions; and the inevitable spunky girl, Princess Mira Nova of the planet Tangeah. The two-dimensional, hand-drawn figure of the three-dimensional, computer-generated Buzz recalls the animated versions of live performers who populated Saturday morning TV during the 1980s. This adventure is typical of current kidvid: it has more special effects and sight gags than the cartoons of 20 years ago did, but the violence-free battles feel very tame. Buzz Lightyear may engage kids who play with the toys, but it won't appeal to the adults who flocked to the brilliant Toy Story features. --Charles Solomon

Together with those hilarious Little Green Men and a whole new cast of exciting characters, Buzz Lightyear takes adventure and heroism to infinity and beyond!

Reporting for Duty.......2007-06-04
I've found that it's often dangerous to over-analyze the simple joys of childhood -- ice cream, running in the park, Saturday morning cartoons. And yet here on Amazon, Buzz Lightyear has somehow morphed into a polarizing figure, on par with the likes of Barry Bonds and Ronald Reagan.
Both of my boys were fully hooked by the dazzling "Toy Story" movies -- and, to be fair, most of us parents were big fans as well. So what can we make of "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins"?
If your kids are Buzz devotees -- my sons have all but pushed for matching Star Command tattoos -- this movie is a good bit of fun. The stunning computer animation of the previous movies are missing, save for an early intro scene. Buzz's beloved three-dimensional movie pals are gone; what we have here is Buzz the cartoon hero.
Brace yourself for plenty of laser blasts, spaceship chases and, well, cartoonish showdowns between Buzz, Emperor Zurg and cast of new Buzz buddies. The movie went over well with the boys, who at 3 and 1 can somehow cope without the Woody and all of the computer animations. The question is -- can we?
Bad Reviewers miss the point.......2006-07-25
This is supposed to be the cartoon that the Action Figure in the movie is derived from. These complaints about "No Computer Animation" and no "Depth" is missing the point of the show. It is a fun show for kids and adults. I am a huge fan of Pixar and the Toy Story series, even more so, of Buzz Lightyear himself. I Love this movie and I Love the animated series (with great voice acting, including the always hilarious Patrick Warburton). Highly recommended from this Amazonian.
terrible.......2006-01-05
I bought this for my three-year-old son because he loves Buzz Lightyear in the Toy Story movies. What a mistake. This movie is completely lacking in the charm and wit that made Toy Story so great. It is totally unoriginal and pointless. The violence was to be expected, but I guess I wanted it to be backed up with some depth, which it is not. If I can, I'm taking this movie back.
NIce show, but a little much for younger toddlers.......2005-02-24
That said, this is something that is a great continuation from the Toy Story movies. It is a cartoon and not computer animation like the Toy Story movies, in case you're wondering. It's interesting - how they kill off Buzz's sidekick and gives him a new one. But it really is a bit much for the younger toddler set. I guess I wouldn't recommend this much before age 6. It really involves a plot that is quite long and gets a little boring. I'm not sure that I'd watch it again and my little guy actually wanted to watch something else. He LOVES Buzz but this movie just wasn't up to par. The story basically served as an introduction to a series, but still, it could have been better and more appealing to the younger crowd as well. Again, I wouldn't get this for a toddler. It's just a bit much and too boring for them.
were they too lazy to do this one with computers?.......2004-09-11
buzz is the same cocky, thunder stealing jerk from toy story.buzz must defeat zurg, the evil emporer in this one.this is up in space and nobody from toy story except those 2 and the green aliens from pizzaplanet are in it.the kids will watch it but will probably prefer toy story and toy story 2.those too are so far superior even the kids recognize it.theres really not much to say except i hope they dont make anymore.
Customer Reviews:
Eh, what do ya expect, it's just rated R........2007-09-11
...Which means there is little nudity. If that's what you were looking for, then you'll be disappointed. If you're not willing to pay $40-50 for the original, unrated version on another site then you should get this cheaper version.
On the other hand this is a funny movie. That's really all it can be.
The digital effects are just as cheesy. If Jesse Jane, Janine, or Carmen Luvana wasn't in it, I would've given it 1 star.
Great movie - needs more Hardcore though.......2007-08-16
Not bad Video, great girls acting is typical with that industry, could b a little more hardcore
Total Disappointment.......2007-04-11
The FX are brilliant - definately not expected from an adult movie, however the R rating is so mild that the R rated content shown on main line TV channels is more explicit.
This is Ultra soft adult.
Who Wants an Adult Movie with no Adult Content?.......2007-02-22
The R-rated version of an adult film is a terrific waste of time. Most adult films have so little plot to hang the story onto, they barely deserve the description of being "movies". In cutting this film to an R-rating, the producers have gutted the film (nay, movie) into a set of disjointed scenes that jump-cut past what was obviously the most important activity in the movie in the first place: the sex. The effect is jarring, like being Billy Pilgrim (from Kurt Vonnegut's "Slaughterhouse Five"), constantly jumping ahead in time and always "just when things were getting interesting".
If you want to see this movie, get the unrated or adult version. Leave the R-rated on the shelf, for the seventeen year-olds.
No me gusto para nada.......2006-12-23
Es una buena película en cuanto a producción, pero esta versión es malísima, me arrepiento de haberla comprado, gracias
Description
A powerful tale of fantasy, courage and epic adventure. A wondrous quest to recover a legendary lost weapon. Brian Jacques' Redwall is the first of three volumes to be animated. These 13 action-paced episodes recount the captivating Redwall story while remaining faithful to the book. Also, the memorable soundtrack is beautifully performed by the Czechoshlovak State Orchestra.

Redwall- Season One.......2007-03-14
Super!!! Brian Jacques is the BEST!!!!!! Action-packed animated series!!!!!!!! Interesting Setting & Lovable characters!!!!
Redwall - Season One.......2007-01-16
Redwall is a huge hit in our house - both with the books and DVDs. When we first got into Redwall several years ago, I had been told there was a cartoon series about it on PBS. I looked for the VHS online (no DVDs available then). I could find no sellers in the USA & had to buy from Canada. One tape, with only a few episodes, was about $15 with shipping. We got all of them (at that time there was only season 1). My daughter wanted all of the episodes for Christmas, so I decided to go the DVD route (one DVD case takes up a lot less room than several VHS tapes) and replace all the VHS of season 1 with this DVD (actually, there are 2 discs in one case). She also got season 2 (and will get season 3 for her birthday).
You will also notice there is also available "Redwall the Movie". All that is, is season 1, edited down to an appropriate length for a movie. Sure, it may be smoother viewing w/ no breaks in between episodes - but you miss a lot that is edited out. Also, as a mother, I appreciate the shorter 20-30 minute episodes on the unedited season 1. I think you can also get the season broke up into several DVDs - but it is cheaper to purchase all of the season at once.
My daughter who is 9 now, really enjoys these episodes & watches them frequently. My son, who is now 13, has been reading the books for a few years (he devours them & rereads them frequently). He says the episodes are pretty true to the books. He did say there is the occasional added character (minor character), and some of the more gruesome scenes are edited for younger viewing. (By the way, When I say 'gruesome', I do not mean like a horror movie.)
Redwall is an excellent series to watch or to read (my daughter will read them when she gets older - the size of the books intimidate her right now). I am a very careful mother - what I mean by that is I try to screen what my children are exposed to until they have proper discernment of their own. I found nothing objectionable in this series. Yes, there is death (just like real life), & the episodes show it, but in a gentle sort of way. In a way, these Redwall series remind me of the DVD version of "Watership Down", though not quite as serious. Redwall has some humor, though I would not categorize it as a comedy.
Redwall is a GREAT series! Not mind-numbing entertainment that seems so prevalent these days, unfortunately.
it could not be any better.......2007-01-12
If you a fan of the books, you will not be disappointed with the series. Even if you never read the books, this 2 disc set stands strong on its own. A wide variety of characters and a solid storyline makes this series fun for everyone. My son and I ate up all the episodes within 2 days and it has become his favorite show to watch. Highly recommended.
Love it!.......2006-11-07
This is a very good movie. Goes along with the book very well. Even adds a few things. Could have been funnier, though. They left out a lot of amusing conversations. Oh well. They did pretty well for a movie made from a book.
A very good series.......2006-08-02
This is a fairly good adaptation of the Redwall series of books (edited slightly from the books, mainly to remove some more gruesome scenes). This DVD isn't for young children as there are some characters killed in the series (though most deaths are off-screen).
Also the technical specs listed for this DVD are incorrect. Currently the page lists that the DVD comes in English and Japanese and is closed-captioned. This is not true. The two DVDs are English only and there are no subtitles or closed-captions on either disk.

Winner of four Academy Awards including best picture, director, screenplay, and music, this 1963 adaptation of Henry Fielding's classic novel is a rousing, bawdy comedy about a young man's ribald adventures in 18th-century England. Albert Finney is splendidly hilarious in the title role of a charming womanizer who was discovered as an abandoned infant in the bed of Squire Allworthy, a wealthy landowner who named the child Tom Jones and raised him as his own. As a young man, Tom yearns for the comely daughter (Susannah York) of a neighboring squire, but his amorous adventures (including an extended food orgy that becomes the film's funniest scene) lead him to London and to a duel with a jealous husband. He's sentenced to hang, but fate intervenes. A hit around the world, the film was expertly written by noted playwright John Osborne, and director Tony Richardson uses a variety of old-style movie techniques to heighten the lusty, good-natured fun. Don't miss this one! --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Tom Jones.......2007-07-02
Winner of the Best Picture Oscar, Tony Richardson's rousing film has all vital elements in proper alignment: a brilliant screenplay by playwright John Osborne, swift pacing fueled by John Addison's zippy harpsichord score, and colorful performances from a powerhouse cast including Griffith, Joan Greenwood, Diane Cilento, Edith Evans, and a young David Warner as the priggish Mr. Blifil. York is the epitome of fair English beauty, and Finney carries off the central role with gusto. Sumptuous color photography is another bonus. Don't miss the famous Finney/Cilento eating scene.
Good........2007-04-10
Yes, the book is better, but this is still great stuff. I think it even got a few laughs out of my boyfriend who doesn't much care for older movies or literary classics. My favorite part is the eating scene where he and the prostitute are tearing off chunks of meat in a way that fluctuates between disgusting and lusty.
Read the novel instead.......2006-11-13
4 Oscars...1963 must have been a very bad year, and the Academy people never read Fielding. Or never read, period. The novel is brilliant and funny, the movie - not much so. They managed to condence a 900 page book into 2 hours and still make it boring. 27-year-old Finney looking 35 plays Tom Jones? Come on! As for DVD quality, think of home videos of the same period.
Great Memories.......2006-11-05
I saw this movie at first release. My brother Gary Downie did the choreography for the dance scene. So it brought back "great memories".
I love the music, it just fits perfectly.
I recommend you watch this.
Fell Asleep.......2006-09-25
Don't see how this movie could have won any award at all. Wasn't really funny, or romantic or true to the period it supposedly was set in. Fell asleep during most of the last hour and was glad when it was finally over.
Don't waste your time. Looking forward to watching the other version of this novel.

great movie two watch and a classic in its own time.
I liked it almost as much as the First and third. 4 1/2 star.......2005-05-18
This was another good movie. I rented it with part one. There is no Porky in this movie. Ill keep it short. Pee Wee is in his moms play with his friends and the Reverend wants to shut down Shakespeare. Later on they even give a hard time to the local KKK chapter and catch that the reverend is as much a perv.

Two Hilarious Classics For The Price Of One!.......2005-01-09
Porky's: A classic, as everyone knows. Hilarious scenes include the Cherry Forever incident, the first run in with Mr. Porky, the call for Mike Hunt, the scene with Lassie in the boy's locker room, and of course, the famous shower scene. The movie's good 'cause, as well as being really funny, it's a nostalgic look at a time long gone, and has some good messages about anti-Semiticism and child abuse, all topped off with an awesome revenge scheme.
Porky's II The Next Day: Leonard Maltin called this movie "unrelated to the original." I don't know what movie he was watching, because, although this doesn't have Porky or his bar, this one continues right after part one with the same characters and lots of continuations from the original. A lot of people don't like this 'cause it's missing Porky, but the important thing is the characters are here and just as fun. There's more revenge, all of it rightfully deserved and deliciously done. A very worthy sequel (although Jarvis healed major injuries pretty quickly).
This is a cool DVD. I got it for Christmas, and watch it a lot. The only problem is that Porky's is already available on a singular DVD, so it might have made more sense to relase a DVD with Porky's II The Next Day and Porky's Revenge together, since Porky's Revenge is not yet available on DVD. Ah well, this is still a fun movie set with two really funny classics. Buy it from Amazon now.

Amazon.com essential video
It's set during the Korean War, in a mobile army surgical hospital. But no one seeing M*A*S*H in 1970 confused the film for anything but a caustic comment on the Vietnam War; this is one of the counterculture movies that exploded into the mainstream at the end of the '60s. Director Robert Altman had labored for years in television and sporadic feature work when this smash-hit comedy made his name (and allowed him to create an astonishing string of offbeat pictures, culminating in the masterpiece Nashville). Altman's style of cruel humor, overlapping dialogue, and densely textured visuals brought the material to life in an all-new kind of war movie (or, more precisely, antiwar movie). Audiences had never seen anything like it: vaudeville routines played against spurting blood, fueled with open ridicule of authority. The cast is led by Elliott Gould and Donald Sutherland, as the outrageous surgeons Hawkeye Pierce and Trapper John McIntyre, with Robert Duvall as the uptight Major Burns and Sally Kellerman in an Oscar-nominated role as nurse "Hot Lips" Houlihan. The film's huge success spawned the long-running TV series, a considerably softer take on the material; of the film's cast, only Gary Burghoff repeated his role on the small screen, as the slightly clairvoyant Radar O'Reilly. --Robert Horton
Customer Reviews:
still a great movie.......2007-08-03
What more is there to say, one of the classic great movies, still makes you laugh!
Fantasy Football. .......2007-07-10
Robert Altman the great director of M.A.S.H gives an interesting perspective in a 1977 interview with Roger Ebert in the book Awake in the Dark. He said "the problem is that people insist on getting everything straight. On having movies make sense, and on being provided with a key for unlocking complex movies.
"It's the weirdest thing. We're willing to accept anything, absolutely anything, in real life. But we demand order from our fantasies".
That is so true because at first watching the movie and having been in the military i was like there is no way they could punch a higher ranking officer, sexually harass anyone let alone a superior, have mustaches and haircuts like that and wear the clothes they wear and i wasn't one of the uptight guys in the military by any means.
Then about halfway through i thought to myself I'm finding it hard to accept a haircut and a mustache that's in a movie, yet i could watch the bloodiest war film and not question it or for that matter watch war any night of the week for real on the news. When you think about it what should be harder to accept?
Maybe we shouldn't accept just anything in real life and have it be our fantasies that run wild.
Speaking of fantasy, i was done writing this review hours ago and i got this idea. M.A.S.H could've been in the minds of me, my friends, or other guys in the military during all the hurry up and waiting. The movie could be two guys that are in this unit who talk and have conversations about "oh i'd like to do this or i'd like to punch that guy" and we could be seeing their imaginations and their conversations played out for us.
The fact that I'm still analyzing it shows how great a director Altman was and what a good movie can do. I can't wait to see more Altman films.
batcall.......2007-06-28
One of the first and best anti-war, tell it like it is, movies. Started a great tv series.
Very Good Movie!.......2007-06-26
The movie is wonderful, but what I appreciate most about this film is that it inspired the TV series, which is my favorite series of all-time. I watch the episodes over and over again and never get bored with them!
An absolutely fantastic film.......2007-05-09
I just love, love, love this film. It's been one of my favorites since the early 1990's when I snagged it off cable on video tape. This 5 start DVD collection is tops in that not only is the transfer of the film fantastic, but the special features within are fantastic too. I thoroughly enjoyed the documentary on the making of MASH and how they had to go to great lengths to keep their vision of the movie intact and they succeeded handsomely IMO.
One of my favorite scenes is when they raise the walls of the showers while Major Hot Lips Hoolihan was inside and she falls and her outburst afterwords is just priceless, also the scene before that where she makes out to Major Burns and it gets broadcast all over the camp, also a priceless scene.
True, the film is based on the book of the same name, but about the Korean War and MASH the movie, is as much about Vietnam as it was about Korea as far as the war is concerned. I love the grittiness of the film, the overlapping dialogue and such, all ground breaking stuff back in 1969-1970.
Overall, this deluxe DVD package is well worth the price for what it contains.

Eccentric and suspicious passengers line the Scotland Express as Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson and Inspector Lestrade (Dennis Hoey) investigate. Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, who first appeared in publication in 1887 --- He is the creation of Scottish born author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle --- A brilliant London-based detective, Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess, and is renowned for his skillful use of deductive reasoning and astute observation to solve difficult cases --- He is arguably the most famous fictional detective ever created, and is one of the best known and most universally recognisable literary characters in any genre.
Conan Doyle wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories that featured Holmes --- All but four stories are narrated by Holmes' friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson, two are narrated by Holmes himself, and two others are written in the third person --- The first two stories, short novels, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual for 1887 and Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890 --- The character grew tremendously in popularity with the beginning of the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine in 1891; further series of short stories and two serialised novels appeared almost right up to Conan Doyle's death in 1930 --- The stories cover a period from around 1878 up to 1903, with a final case in 1914. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
Rathbone is most widely recognized for his starring role as Sherlock Holmes in fourteen movies between 1939 and 1946, all of which co-starred Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson --- The first two films, The Hound of the Baskervilles and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (both 1939) were set in the late-Victorian times of the original stories --- Both of these were made by Twentieth Century Fox, later installments, made at Universal Studios, beginning with Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror (1942), were set in contemporary times, and some had World War II-related plots --- Rathbone and Bruce also reprised their film roles in a radio series, The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1939 - 1946) --- (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Sherlock and the Diamond.......2006-01-26
The Basil Rathbone - Nigel Bruce Sherlock Holmes films were moved from Victorian England to current England (1946). Also, like the James Bond films, the only thing similar to the books is the title. If you are looking for faithful adaptation of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle books then get the Jeremy Brett Mystery series. If you are looking for some great acting and good period mysteries, the Rathbone - Bruce series is great.
Lady Carstairs is taking the train from London to Edinburgh with The Star of Rhodesia. Holmes and Watson are hired to protect it from master jewel thief Colonel Moran, who also happens to be a master of disguise. To make things more intriguing, Lady Carstairs son, Roland, is murdered on the train. This is probably one of the more typical plots but is set entirely on a train.
The transfer quality is fairly poor but not awful. These are the kind of films that are not usually subject to restoration and the deteriorated status is that of wear and age. I have seen a new collection but they are quite expensive. So if you just want to have a copy of the films just to enjoy these mysteries, these are fine.
Of course, for most Basil was Sherlock Holmes, this was probably the first films that he had a chance to a role that he could use his substantial talent. Before these, he was usually the bad guy or a minor supporting player. He was an accomplished swordsman and the joke was he constantly had to lose to actors that he could beat blindfolded. So Basil made these quickie films much more depth than they would otherwise have.
SUSPENSEFUL!!!.......2005-09-30
What makes this a masterpiece "who done it" is that everyone acts suspicious.
Holmes is hired by Roland Carstairs to guard the Star of Rhodesia, a magnificent diamond being transported from London to Edinburgh. Holmes replaces the diamond with a fake that ends up being stolen and Carstairs is murdered. Now, the question is who stole the fake one and killed Carstairs. But Carstairs is not the only one to get murdered. There WILL be others, and for some of you who are trying to figure out who the fiend is, you might just be surprised when the very one you thought done the killing, ends up being killed themselves. Black and White with no curse words or sexual situations and no bloody gore. Just a superb plot with a fairly good directed movie.
I say fairly good because the way the train was shown speeding down the track was obviously done by fast forwarding the film. If a real train was to cut a corner like that one did in the movie, it'd flip off the track. But overall this is a movie worth watching, with great action and suspense(one scene in particular that comes to mind is where Holmes fights desperately to keep from being literally thrown off the train), also, there is drama, intrique, and horror. This is one you can enjoy watching alone to figure out who done it, or share with a friend, family members, or mate.
Get something to eat, preferably buttered popcorn and a Coke (or as I like to eat, Banner chocolate covered almonds and a Coke), turn out the lights, and by all means, make sure you put your sofa or chair against the wall as you enjoy this entertaining film. If you like a good mystery, you'll want to order this one.
TEDIUM ON A TRAIN.......2005-04-10
Tedious Sherlock Holmes entry that can't be salvaged even with the casting of the best theatrical Holmes and Watson; Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. The speeding train makes for a limited cinematic experience, and Bruce's Watson comes off more imbesole than sidekick. The bigger mystery is where the title comes from; although the train travels at night, 'terror' is not the word that comes to mind.
A train caper featuring a high-stakes jewel heist .......2004-10-04
Terror By Night offers a nice change of pace in the old Sherlock Holmes series of films starring Basil Rathbone as the great detective. The action takes place completely outside the confines of London and 221B Baker Street, centering on a train ride from London to Edinburgh. Holmes has been hired to safeguard an ill-fated diamond called the Star of Rhodesia on Lady Margaret Carstairs' trip home, but he's not alone. Good old Inspector Lestrade is also onboard, posing as a fisherman on holiday. Despite the presence of Holmes, Watson, and Lestrade, though, Lady Margaret's son is murdered and the jewel stolen. The jewel must be in one of the compartments onboard the train, and Lestrade quickly takes over the questioning and searching of the passengers. Dr. Watson - God bless him - also attempts his own investigation, which bears only ignominious - and comical - results.
There are a number of real characters onboard the train, each one of them suspicious in some way or other. There's a rather impertinent young lady accompanying her mother's coffin, a most disagreeable professor, an older couple concerned about the police presence around them, Watson's old friend Major Duncan-Bleek, as well as several train employees. The fact that we the viewers are kept unaware of the culprit's identity until the end is a definite plus - as is the fact that the guilty party turns out to be a jewel thief of much renown. There's as much light comedy as there is drama until the endgame is set in motion, and the ending offers a surprise or two that rescues the film from the realm of the merely average. Terror By Night is not the best of the Rathbone Sherlock Holmes films, but it's certainly an entertaining, reasonably compelling entry in the series.
