Yuri Otani, the 6th grade heroine of this 2001 OVA, is elected by her class to be their "alien fighter:" With Kasumi and Kumi, she tracks down weird beasties that appear at their elementary school. The girls, who look like bobblehead dolls with no nose, wear a "symbiotic alien borg"--a sort of winged frog--on their heads into battle. Yuri spends all four episodes of the series sniveling about how scared she is, how she doesn't want to deal with aliens, etc. Irritating as Yuri is, the viewer may pity her, because she's stuck in a story that makes no sense whatsoever. Sometimes the girls destroy the aliens with drill-like tentacles the borgs sprout; sometimes they keep them penned up at school. The disc is loaded with extras, none of which make anything any clearer. (Rated 13 and older: violence, grotesque imagery, nudity, alcohol use) --Charles Solomon

    Description

In the not-too-distant future, alien invasion is a daily occurrence. Gross, slimy aliens are everywhere, particularly in elementary schools. Someone has to save the day, so Yuri and her 6th grade classmates are elected for this most popular assignment. Can this trio of cute schoolgirls defeat terrifying creatures from outer space?

5 out of 5 stars Not as cuteNcuddly as the cover.......2007-02-13

Looking at the cover, you might think that this is one of those adorable/cuddly little anime that isn't going to disturb anyone....

This is an excellent anime, but it isn't sweet. The alien presence seems to symbolize adulthood, and this anime takes the position that adults ALWAYS have a hidden agenda.

I think most teenagers would like this, but most parents would not.
If you do watch it, be sure to watch the end credits of the final episode.

3 out of 5 stars Good with manga.......2007-01-26

The animation in Alien Nine is beautiful, both the dub and original voice acting is fair, and the music is strange yet entertaining. It also makes a very nice addition to the manga (term for a Japanese comic book). By this statement, I mean that the movie essentially NEEDS it's manga counterpart to feel like an entire series. The episodes just cut off with next-to-no hope for another volume, which tends to be the style of many Japaneses animes, which are normally intended for a Japanese audience that always has easy access to manga. This anime isn't for everyone, it's a very interesting mixture of cute people and grotesque aliens that they have to fight with exploding-green-alien-blood-and-guts results (think the Men in Black movies ). If this isn't your cup of tea, or if you aren't intending to read the manga, then I'd suggest steering clear. Otherwise, I would definitely suggest seeing it. It's a funky, fun addition to the wonderful manga series.

5 out of 5 stars I've NEVER seen anything like it.......2006-09-10

This is a fully developed but freakish alternate reality firmly grounded in the psychology of our "real" world.

I was NOT prepared for this and you won't be either. Frankly, nothing can prepare you. You will either love it or hate it. Or both.

You will be missing out on a very unique experience if you don't watch this one.

    1 out of 5 stars HUH?.......2006-05-18

I didn't really like this title. This is one of those series that gives you more questions than answers. Yuri is the first crybaby character whose crying actually got on my nerves. And some scenes were just to weird for me. So, this is one title I can do without.

5 out of 5 stars these aliens eat poop.......2005-11-03

Yuri is totally bummed she just started 6th grade and has been elected to capture and eliminate the aliens that are constantly invading the school...except it includes wearing gross symbotic alien helmets that survive by eating the waste material produce from the host body!
