Description

H.G. Wells' fantastic account of life on the moon is vividly brought to the screen by special effects master Ray Harryhausen in this amazing sci-fi epic featuring unforgettable extra-terrestrial creatures. The film begins with a team of United Nations astronauts planning an upcoming moon mission. The astronauts are both confused and intrigued by a man (Judd) who claims he, his fiancee and a scientist journeyed to the moon 65 years ago and were attacked by "Selenites," grotesque, human-like ant forms that live in immense crystal caverns. Now it is up to the U.N. team to attempt a lunar landing that could be more horrifying than ever believed possible.

4 out of 5 stars Delightfully cheesy.......2007-07-20

It looks pretty dated, with crouched-over guys in bug suits, a cheerfully dotty amateur scientist, and the obligatory saveable babe. Oh, and that little moon-ship had eating facilities, but not a lot for dealing with the inhabitants' other needs of nature.

We don't see them until way past the half-way point, but Harryhausen's wonderful stop-animation makes this memorable. That includes a dancing skeleton, a whale-sized caterpillar, and a few other goodies. The ending shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who's seen War of the Worlds - I haven't read the book in decades, though, so I can't say how closely this tracks Wells's original.

No matter, it's a popcorn movie. Wait for a rainy Saturday and run the flicks - the popcorn will taste just as good either way.

5 out of 5 stars 40 year old, ready to watch some old movies from my childhood.......2007-05-15

I saw this movie when I was 7 years old.

I just recently got on a kick to watch some of my old favorite Sci-Fi films.

This movie is great, because it has all the charm of the 50's and 60's sci-fi films, but unlike most....this one has a story worthy of HG Wells or Disney. So you get the best of both worlds.

When you add Ray Harryhousing's stop motion special effects...you have this movie hitting every element of what good classic Sci-Fi should be!

4 out of 5 stars fun adventure.......2007-05-08

I sure found it interesting to see an alternative history of what space travel in the past could have been like. In general, it made for a very fun and interesting movie. The characters were humorous and the special effects were great. For the lover of classic sci-fi and adventure, this one is a must-see.

3 out of 5 stars A bit dated.......2007-03-12

Although there is some merit in this film it cannot be considered a classic sci-fi film- it would take away from the real value of he true sci-fi ones. The plot is about the very first expedition to the Moon around the turn of the 20th century. Some of the scenes are a bit comical- but that is not entirely a bad thing as it lightens the film and makes it more enjoyble for kids to watch. It is a bit dated but one should also consider the time that it was produced.
All in all a good family film that your kids will enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC AND COOL MOVIE!!!.......2007-03-11

This movie is awesome!!! Not only is it awesome, but the Selenites are cool. :) It has an excellent plot and animation (by Ray Harryhausen) and the scenes are cool. The Selenites are really cool. This is a must-have for all sci-fi fans! Even though it came out in 1964, I still watch it! This is an excellent made movie and I strongly reccomend it! :D

4 out of 5 stars "The Sculpture Anteater With Onion Ring Is Located In The Plaza.".......2007-09-06

As a long time "Mystery Science Theater 3000" fan, I love to revisit episodes periodically. This set is one of the few I had not previously purchased, mostly because I find the Hercules films to be exceptionally tedious. Of course that didn't stop me from watching the two contained here, "Hercules Unchained" and "Hercules Against the Moon Men." Without question "Hercules Against the Moon Men" is the more entertaining of the two due to the ludicrous imposition of "Moon Men" in a sword and sandals extravaganza. The riffing and host segments in the two Hercules films are great as usual, but I still find the films too boring to be very entertaining. The Hercules-induced tedium is the sole reason I gave the set four stars instead of the normal five stars for an MST3K set.

On the other hand, "Prince of Space" is one of my very favorite episodes. There is nothing as amusing as seeing Prince of Space using his magical stick to defeat the menacing chicken-like arch villain Krankor while yelling "Your weapons have no effect on me!" You'd think Krankor would figure it out, but he never does. The whole undercover superhero aspect of the plot combined with the typical Japanese children mitigating disaster ("We like boot blacking very much!") elements make this a must see episode.

I have always loved "The Killer Shrews" as well. I saw the original movie many years ago, and can't even begin to tell you how much the MST3K treatment adds to this somber, yet stupid, shaggy dog movie: I love the concept of dressing dogs up in shrew costumes and then making them chase the main characters off an island under inverted storage drums. The acting is hilariously overplayed, the concept is beyond laughable, and the direction and lighting are among the worst even by MST3K standards. I love it.

The set comes with three shorts that I liked to varying degrees. "Assignment: Venezuela," which was never used in an episode, is lengthy and is a modestly boring film about an American family moving to Venezuela to help the oil industry. There are some great riffs during this short, including my review title, which was Crow's description of a piece of modern sculpture. "Century 21 Calling" is an account of extremely white people learning about the telephones of tomorrow, which are quite humorous in retrospect. By far my favorite of the shorts is "A Case of Spring Fever," which is about the wonders of springs, and features a character named "Coily the Spring Sprite." ("Coily? Ewww.") I love this short because I completely don't understand who would make this film or why. Was it made by the National Spring Council? Was some other product in danger of dominating springs in the marketplace? I have no idea, but it makes for one of the best shorts ever.

In summary, any MST3K is a great thing, but compared to other sets this one left me wanting more...a little Hercules goes a long way. Despite that modest critique, I would still highly recommend volume seven.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT SET HERE! GIVE ME MORE!!!!!.......2007-06-13

This is a very funny set of episode on volume 7. I am a fan of some of these old movies and "The Killer Shrews" is one goofy old film I've seen many times without the jokes! If your a fan of these guys this is another great set.

5 out of 5 stars "Killer Shrew. Killer Shrew. Don't know the difference from me and you...".......2007-02-28

As much as I am a huge fan of MST3K, this set is easily one of the strongest DVD collections that Rhino has put out. With three episodes from the Joel/Comedy Central era and one from the Sci-Fi era, this set will keep you occupied for so long, what with repeated viewings and all.

The set kicks off with "Hercules Unchained", with a plot line I've never heard in the Greek myth stories: Hercules goes on a mission and drinks the "water of forgetfulness" and, you guessed it, forgets everything about his life, and is lured to some...secret kingdom of some sort. Joel and the bots have a real fun time with this one, as in one of the host segments, they make fun of the phrase "water of forgetfulness" with the food they eat and drink, like asparagus of happiness or something like that. 8/10

"Hercules Against The Moon Men" is a little stronger than the previous film, although it would have been best to not compile two Hercules in one set. Still, this movie is worth-watching. Granted, only a few of the riffs have been repeated from the previous Hercules flick, but it also contains some much stronger riffs than the other. This film involves Hercules on a mission to find out what the fuss is about with, you guessed it, the Moon Men. It has one of the funniest host segments: The Pants Song, sung by Joel and the bots, making fun of the costumes worn by the characters in the film. 8.5/10

While the Sci-Fi era may be considered to be Ganon's Sacred Realm for MST3K, you still get a gem every now and then. "Prince of Space" is one of those gems from that era. Granted, the host segments aren't really up to par, but the really cheesy film, as well as riffings from Mike and the bots really make up for it. This is your below-average, Saturday morning, children's Japanese superhero flick, that would better told in just a half hour than stretching it to an hour and a half. Memorable riffs pop up now and then such as "Krank 'wh*re'?", and the riffs run at a fairly consistent rate, keeping you occupied for quite a while. 7.5/10

This set goes out with a bang. That bang is "The Killer Shrews", one of my favorite episodes. I do believe cheesy monster flicks are so easily funny to poke at, making some of the funniest episodes of the series and this one is no exception. The plot is simple: a couple guys are sailing on a boat and arrive at an island infested with giant shrews. Some great moments are present here, including the Killer Shrew song ("Killer Shrew, Killer Shrew, Don't know the difference from me and you..."), and the riffs are consistently hilarious, making this the real highlight of this set. 9/10

In addition, you'll also get a few bonus featurette riffings from Joel and the bots, including a rarely seen featurette, "Assignment Venezuela", all of which are worth watching.

5 out of 5 stars Deeeep Hurting...!.......2006-12-21

I brought this compliation mainly for the feature "Prince of Space" one of the last MST3K episodes I saw before the show was cancelled on the now weakened and somewhat abysmal SciFi Channel. But I found the two Hercules features and Killer Shrews to be just as hilarious. One of the Hearcules features was directed by a famous Italian director who also made Black Sunday and Planet of the Vampires.

4 out of 5 stars Prince of Space.......2006-12-08

What can I add? I really miss MS3K. I HAD to get this collection, mainly for Prince of Space. I remember growing up and seeing this craptacular on a local UHF station. The two Hercules movies, eh. Some funny stuff there but the Shrews is better than both combined. Still, it a must have for any fan of MST3K!

Description

Prince of Space aka "Yusei Oji" aka "Starman"

When aliens from the barren rock planet Krankor attack Earth, only the curiously-costumed Prince of Space (aka Wally the shoeshine boy in disguise) and his trusty exhaust-spewing rocketship can save the world-- or at least Japan-- from total conquest by the evil Phantom and his beak-nosed minions. Since conventional space weapons cannot harm the spry Prince of Space, the Phantom engages in a kidnapping scheme involving a cadre of international scientists.

Invasion of the Neptune Men aka "Uchu Kaisoku-sen"

In another case of galactic conquest, clunky metallic aliens from the planet Neptune invade Earth-- or at least a quaint field in rural Japan-- only to have their efforts thwarted by caffeinated superhero Space Chief (venerable action hero Sonny Chiba of Kill Bill and The Streetfighter fame), who travels from situation to head-scratching situation in a boxy space car when not befriending a group of geeky boys.

3 out of 5 stars More fun than I expected........2006-12-06

After all the reviews I've read of the two movies that make up this DVD I expected them to be abysmal failures along the lines of Plan Nine From Outer Space. Well, yes, they are both in the "so bad it's good" category, and I haven't seen the MST3000 treatments (I imagine they are hilarious) but Prince of Space and Invasion of the Neptune Men are a hoot, and this DVD with vintage drive-in movie interstitials and trailers is a lot of fun. Honestly, I think if I had seen these when I was seven or eight years old, back in those pre-Star Wars days, I would loved them on their own terms as good old-fashioned space operas. Bonus points for a 21-year-old leotard-clad Sonny Chiba in Neptune Men.

4 out of 5 stars attack of the cheese from outer space.......2006-12-01

ok,so these two aren't star wars or even far out space nuts(if you don't know what that show is check it out here),but they are so cheesey that they can be fun. my boys have fallen in love with these two over the top space heros from japan. "prince of space" has our hero(who hides as wally the shoeshine boy in disguise)taking on the phantom(with bird like features)as he tries to take over the world. super silly but great fun if you are up for it or you have young kids. " invasion of the neptune men" has robots from neptune tring to take over the world and this time a superhero space chief figts them. this one is even more fun and even has a young sonny chiba (streetfighter) as the hero. great fun! so get over your self and sit back with your kids and get lost in the cheese and enjoy.

1 out of 5 stars A sad Movie.......2006-10-27

I am not too sure about Invasion of the Neptune Men, but Price of Space is wise-cracked by Mystery Science Theatre 3000 the only reason you wouldn't want to buy Volume 7 of Mystery Science Theatre 3000 is to watch Prince of Space in it's uncut version (which is very painful).

Mankind's greatest adventure is remembered for the digital age. The DVD format changed the way we look at movies and especially TV series, with massive complete-season sets. That concept is spectacularly taken one-step further with Spacecraft Films' definitive collections of the Gemini and Apollo space missions, stuffing in nearly every scrap of TV transmissions and on-board footage. The three- to six-disc sets use the full functions of the DVD format; see a liftoff in six different angles (some remixed with 5.1 sound) or listen to a mixture of air-to-ground communications, official NASA narration, or post-flight debriefings, most often carefully synched to the exact moment of footage seen. Like any good research paper, every bit of footage may not be interesting, but taken as a chronicle of history, it's irreplaceable.

NASA's most monumental mission was Apollo 11, placing Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the surface of the moon. Unfortunately, it's one of the least stunningly photographed missions, with grainy black-and-white TV footage for the two-hour moon walk. However it's so rare that hardly anyone has seen more than a few seconds of this broadcast since 1969. Watch the broadcast as it was (alas, no Walter Cronkite, but this is the NASA feed--not a network), or watch the 16mm color footage shot by a stationary camera inside the lunar module, or watch a composition of both that also displays the famous photographs at the moment they were taken (how cool is that?). The moon walk is only one of three discs and there's another eight hours of footage, including all the onboard film and TV transmissions, pre-and post flight news conferences, and 15 views of the launch. Plus there's plenty of behind-the-scenes footage--the assembly of the giant Saturn 5 spacecraft, moon-walk rehearsals, and capsule recovery. For space junkies, it's the ultimate visual treasure trove. Any kid who has primed himself watching Ron Howard's majestic Apollo 13 (which featured no real space footage) will probably be disappointed in the lack of "cool" footage (oddly, the earlier Gemini missions have more "whoa" photography), but anybody interested in the moon mission finally has a complete chronicle of what it looked like when it happened. --Doug Thomas

it is "THE" DVD you must keep if you are dropped above a desert island !

5 out of 5 stars I love this DVD.......2007-01-27

I am a space nut, and watch it all. This is great, good, crisp footage, and the entire moonwalk tv transmission. This is worth the price if you are into this stuff.

5 out of 5 stars a great peice.......2006-09-09

i thought that this was great peice and i watched it 3 times over the past 5 weeks i dont think that it was a hoax when neil armstrong walked on the moon but there are a few thing that cant be explained which is a bit odd but things do go wrong and i think that everyone should just leave it alone, it has been how many years now since it happened and people are still carring on about one of the biggest things to happen in history and a thing that was dam well true and nobody should have ever doubted it. i though that it was an awsome movie and congrads to Neil Armstrong and all the other men that have ever landed on the moon. great work guys. and i dont like kennedy he was a bad president and he only wanted the space race for himself and his popularity and not for the nation. as a women i would also like to see more women put up their hand to go to the moon it would be a great thing even if it is the last thing that you ever do.

have fun hope everyone else enjoyed the movie as much as i did.
:-) :-)

5 out of 5 stars Splendid Archival Material........2006-07-16

As an Apollo enthusiast, I was excited to view all the material contained on the Apollo 11 DVD's. I allready had the Saturn V and B Series disks so I am allready convinced That Spacecraft Films have been in the trenches at NASA going through the hours and hours of 18mm footage and video transfers.

The set is excellent. I allowed myself to drift back to 1969 by watching the complete TV Coverage, then moved onto the all archival footage of the Saturn mating, and rolling out from the VAB. Regarding the video inside the Command Module, I didn't realize there was so much footage I never seen. Also it was excellent that various shots including liftoff, and moon excursion footage was meticulously syncronized with the additional other cameras. While Neal pulled the cord that started the LM Camera pointed to the foot of the LM, Buzz was also filming at the same time Im sure for redundancy purposes. I can't help but wonder what the detail of today's technology would bring had we had it available in 1969.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Engineering Feat of 20th Century.......2006-05-13

In addition to what other reviewers have said, I found the Cape Kennedy launch pad blastoff multiangle coverage feature and 5.1 channel sound to be worth the price alone!

In a full out home theater surround audio system, with max'd out volume, it will blow your mind to see and ***HEAR*** the awesome power of 7.5 million pounds of thrust of the mighty Saturn V rocket in all its glory. INCREDIBLE!!!

The Apollo 11 lunar landing sight fly over (from the far Eastern approach at Smyth's Sea to Western edge of the Sea of Tranquillity) from 100+ mile high orbit in the Command Module, with all three Astronauts' real time commentary, is also particularly interesting and unique about this DVD, which all Astronomer's will love.

Lastly the "Probe and Drogue" segment (over two hours in length) is perhaps the best in-flight TV coverage yet to be recorded on any of the six Moon mission flights. Although highly technical in scope, showing exquisite details of the Lunar Module's' flight and various control systems, it is well worth the time to watch.

If nothing else, watching this DVD, you'll come to learn and appreciate the meticulous planning, followed by nearly a decade of development and testing that went into the Apollo program; a monumental project that consumed ~10 billion dollars in NASA funding throughout the 1960s; all to finally realize the almost unimaginable vision of JFK and the will of American taxpayers.

The story of Apollo 11 told in this DVD's many hours of raw, unedited film footage, taken in large part by the Astronauts themselves, is of simply the most significant engineering feat in human history and fascinating from start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars Good Value. Office Space is super funny.......2001-08-18

Excellent value if you're interested in both titles Office Space (from Mike Judge from Bevis and Butthead and King of the Hill) creates a wicked and funny movie. I found White Men Can't jump tp be much lesser of a movie however if you like Wesley Snipes you'll most likely want this a part of your collection
