You can almost hear the studio pitch meeting echoing throughout Crimson Tide like the sonar on the soundtrack: "It's The Cain Mutiny on a nuclear submarine!" When radio communications problems aboard the USS Alabama prevent the sub from receiving its orders clearly during a tense confrontation with Russian warships, Navy officer Denzel Washington faces a huge ethical dilemma: countermand the orders of legendary Captain Ramsey (Gene Hackman) to fire nuclear missiles, or follow his command and risk launching an unprovoked nuclear war. It's really an actors' picture, and the fun is in the fireworks between Washington and Hackman, each of whose characters articulates solid reasoning behind his decision. There are no easy villains, and there's no easy way to tell right from wrong--that's what makes the nuclear stakes so terrifying. Director Tony Scott (who directed Quentin Tarantino's True Romance script) called in Tarantino to punch up the dialogue, which is why, for example, the sailors talk about Silver Surfer comic books. The digital video disc is in anamorphic widescreen; the sonorous underwater rumblings on the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack will provide you with a good opportunity to show off your system's bass response. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars Newer submarine movies.......2007-07-26

Probably the 2nd best of the newer sub moview. I was not a big Denzel fan.
Just did not care for the roles he chooses to play. But he is a great actor and built a new wing for the army hospital in Texas a few years ago.
Plus he has played a few roles now where the race is not a main issue.
Good DVD quality.

5 out of 5 stars Washington and Hackman battle it out , and we win.......2007-03-09

This is a very smart and tense "thriller" with great action and a very strong script about a sub out of contact with base and orders to fire or not fire nukes. Hackman is the captain and thinks they were ordered to Washington is his second and thinks they shouldn't. the drama and action flow from ideas instead of just mindless action. A great movie for people who like a little meat with their action.

5 out of 5 stars Why can't they make more movies like this.......2006-09-27

Excellent movie. Seriously, why can't they make more movies like this? Smart, well-acted, very dramatic, exciting. I could go on and on. Just a very satisfying movie....each of the thousand times I have watched it. If I accidently come across it on TNT or HBO or wherever, I have to sit and watch it until the end even though I have it on DVD right there on my bookshelf! I can't walk away!

I love the beginning of the movie when they are boarding the sub, and they are standing in the rain while Hackman addresses the crew, and he has that little Q&A routine with the chief of the boat (George Dzundza). This scene really sets the tone. It almost made me want to join the Navy.

The battle between Hackman and Washington's characters is, of course, what the movie is all about, and they pull it off flawlessly. Very good work by both men. That said, all of the key charactors are interesting and well-acted. The director really pulls this movie together very well despite the many charactors involved (many of these guys are big stars now).

The great acting, the very exciting story, and edge of the seat drama just overwhelm whatever weaknesses or improbabilities that may exist in this movie. Great stuff.

3 out of 5 stars Review from a REAL Submariner.......2006-06-17

I gave this movie 3 stars because ultimately, I was entertained. The acting (for the most part) was outstanding, and the tension that was created could be cut with a Knife.

That being said, Let me put some peoples mind at ease, and relate some of the inaccuracies of the movie.

1. No Animals on Board. Period. Lose the Dog and the Fish Tank. An aquarium would be a terrible missile hazzard, and a dog crapping and pissing onboard, not a chance.

2. The supply officer (James Gandolfini) would never be allowed near control. Nor would he have the ability to force a seaman or petty officer to do push ups onboard a bus. The Supply Officer is a "restricted" officer, which means they can not participate in "command" of the vessel. The "Chop" would simply be in charge of the ships stores and the galley, nothing else.

3. There is no countermanding a launch command. Period. If the CIC (The Prez) issues a launch, the birds are flown. All the fail-safe measures (authenticating the flash traffic) are pretty much spot on, yet when word comes down to launch, you launch. The Navy asks it's young submariners to be prepared to do the unthinkable, and are trained as such. As long as there exists the slight possibility that a valid order may be later recinded, you take away the confidence of the crew in it's orders. The safe guards regarding authorization and two person concurrance is designed to prevent a single officer from launching weapons.

However, once a properly formatted, and authentic order is received, it is expected that it will be carried out. To do otherwise would always give crew members a moment of pause, wondering when the order to stand down would occur. This hesitation can not exist. Thus once the birds are ordered to fly, they will fly, as certain as if the president had pulled the trigger himself.

4. While some submariners have been on the heavy side, the number of obese people seen on the boat is not consistant with a real crew. And I have never seen ANYONE as obese as the COB was in this movie.

5. There are no secret "crawl spaces" in which people can move around in. The boat is not that big. Thus, Hunter and crew would have had to navigate actual passageways to get to control, and would have run into whatever guards were stationed.

6. The "submarine" diving in the exterior shots was not a trident ballistic missile boat, but rather a Los Angeles Class attack boat out of Hawaii. I was in Pearl Harbor when the filming took place, and Pearl is strictly a Fast Attack sub base, with Tridents only coming once in awhile for a stop over after the end of a patrol. The boat shown in the dive footage was actually an LA attack boat, and not a boomer.

7. While boat commanders frequently run multiple casualty drills, there would never be a "weapons drill" run just after a potentially fatal fire. The boat commander is ultimately responsible for the boat, crew, and it's payload. No commander would brush off such a large conflageration and "run a drill" until the fire had been fully extinguished and the reflash watch reported no possibility of reflash existed.

8. Enlisted Submariners by nature are picked for their maturity and intelligence. Submariners, especially Nuclear Trained, are encouraged to "question" orders. The safety of the boat and the crew depends on each person being able to accurately determine if an order given is "lawful". The "boys" on board Alabama showed none of those traits. The fact that the "chop" could bully his way into the Captain's Quarters by simply yelling is a testament to the poor opinion the film makers had of enlisted men.

In a "real" boat, the "chop" would have been staring down the barrel of a .45 caliber handgun, and would have been wrestled to the deck while a "security violation" was reported over the ship and "away the security alert team" was sounded. Security on board a sub is so crucial, that there is a story in which a seaman actually ordered Admiral Rickover to kiss the deck face down because the admiral while wearing full dress whites, refused to show the deck watch his military ID. He was spot promoted to Petty Officer by Rickover himself.

So while my Sailor side has issues with all the inaccuracies and fairly poor treatment the military gets with this movie, I do find the movie suspensful, entertaining, and sometimes too close to comfort (the flooding sequence is a nightmare all sailors share)

So kudos to the film makers for making a slick, taunt, thriller, but thankfully, that would and could NEVER happen.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Actors and Well Done Plot.......2006-04-10

This is a simply amazing movie, and what makes it even more stellar is that we've had several fantastic submarine movies in the past - Das Boot and Red October come to mind. We've already seen the claustrophobic, booming power of being trapped in an underwater submarine. That this movie is able to make that closeness even more powerful - and draw us into a story that really grips you with its meaning - is rather impressive.

We begin with two powerhouses of actors, Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington. Gene is in charge of the sub; Denzel works for him. Gene is an unabashed alpha male, not unheard of in a commander. Denzel is intelligent and respects the chain of command. Suddenly, we're thrown into a situation where the sub *might* have been ordered to launch a missile attack on an enemy to protect the US. Unfortunately, the sub can't get confirmation. So either they shoot and risk starting WWIII for no reason - or they fail to shoot and leave millions of people open to slaughter.

The plot and dialogue is incredible because it explores all the shades of grey in the characters. There's no right or wrong. Both scenarios are equally plausible. Gene wants to do what he was ordered to do, to save as many lives as he can. Denzel is desperate to get confirmation rather than risk mistakenly starting a world war. Both men suck up the men around them into their sides. Nobody WANTS the war. Gene doesn't take pleasure in firing - but he sees it as a necessary action to save lives.

In such close confines, every person on screen makes a huge difference. This movie had not only two stellar top men, but also a fantastic supporting cast. James Gandolfini a la Sopranos. Viggo Mortensen a la Lord of the Rings. The music from Hans Zimmer is just amazing. He is a genius and can give incredibly subtle nuances to his works.

If I had to find something to nit-pick in this movie, it's that I don't think the sub scenes were truly "realistic". It seemed more of a Hollywood sub than a real working piece of machinery that trained soldiers were living in for months. I think Das Boot did an exquisite job of getting that sense across. But really, the sub in this case was a "set" for the dialogue and character development to happen in. It wasn't the showcase, and this wasn't a sub documentary. So I'm willing to accept that tradeoff, so that we could have as tightly woven a story as we got.

5 out of 5 stars In the nuclear world, the true enemy is war itself.......2007-08-25

After the 80's unthinking testosterone action movies, the 90's marked a real change in action ouput, even from the Bruckheimer / Simpson producing team - and so came about this unusually intelligent war movie.
Following in the tradition of classic submarine movies like `The Hunt for Red Octobe' or `Das Boot', there are all the traditional action notes you would expect - torpedo attack, flooding compartments, sinking towards crush depth etc., all done with the technical and editorial perfection you would expect from Tony `Top Gun' Scott. However, all the action is merely a backdrop for a real character study and moral dilemna.
Hackman's veteran Captain is of the old school, `I like things simple' approach. When unrest in Russia becomes critical enough for them to receive orders to launch their nuclear payload, he sets out to perform his duty. However, a second message is received - and it is incomplete, therefore can not be verified. The radio goes down, and the sub is now out of touch with the rest of the world. The `new school' Executive Officer played by Denzel Washington feels strongly enough that they should not follow through with the launch until the message is verified, leading him into direct conflict with the Captain and a tense, riveting and exciting showdown ensues.
The action is note perfect, but it is the acting that makes the movie stand out. Seeing Washington and Hackman `mano-a-mano', cannot fail to knock your socks off with its intensity. Indeed, all the actors have their moments to shine, including a pre-Lord of the Rings Viggo Mortensen, and an excellent George Dzundza playing `Chief of the Boat'.
One early scene encapsulates all that is good about the movie - in the officers mess, a philosophical debate occurs around the launching of the atomic bomb on Japan. Hackman defends the bombing, but Washington at the end of a verbal cat and mouse interplay, replies that `In the age of nuclear weapons, the true enemy is war itself. It is this conflict of ideas that haunts the movie, and the viewer, long after the movie is over. There are no out and out bad guys - just two principled men with different world views -surely there can be no greater drama.
The extended cut offers no substantial difference to the original, and seems to have little reason for existing. The scenes reinstated are almost all minor character moments, giving the minor characters in the movie more time to shine, and helping consolidate the feeling of camaraderie in the submarine, which makes the eventual schism that much more shattering. Other than that, there is a small documentary about the movie which is more promotional than educational. If you have not seen the movie, do so immediately. If you have seen it, and wonder if the extended cut is worth getting? I say don't waste your time.

5 out of 5 stars Denzel + Hackman + a submarine.......2007-07-15

Does it get any better than this? Two of the finest actors of our age in a white-knuckle, bruised-forearm thinkfest!

Any film that can bring the world to the edge of nuclear holocaust, present a mutiny on an SSBN, and still take time to discuss a) Lipizzaner horses, their origins and color; b) Von Clausewitz' view of war; and c) which Silver Surfer was the best, must be seen.

The mutiny aspect is particularly well-played.

You want subtlety in a naval movie? Watch The Caine Mutiny.

This film is rock-'em, sock-'em, far-from-subtle Tony Scott filmmaking at its best. Script sweetening by Robert Towne and Quentin Tarantino only increase the movie's importance.

The "unrated, extended" parts are merely snippets here and there that add something but change nothing of the theatrical release.

4 out of 5 stars Tide is overwrought and strains credibility, but its solid entertainment.......2007-06-05

What's a Jerry Bruckheimer film without people yelling at each other? We get that here, and as much as some of it is believable much is overwrought in this intense and compelling film that offers a scary look as what could happen when the commanding officer has serious differences with his second in command, his executive officer. The scenario is extremely believable, but all the "it's my sub", and "no, it's not, it's my sub now", followed by "no, it's my sub again" stuff does strain credibility.

The storyline owes a big thank you to Herman Wouk's The Caine Mutiny: A Novel and film version The Caine Mutiny (Collector's Edition) for its inspiration on how a subordinating officer attempts to replace his commanding officer. The script here is flawed in all the "take overs" that so easily happen on this sub, but the potential problem with conflicting commands within the story are a very real possibility. The film explores the problem in which the commanding officer and his executive officer differ on the interpretation and intentions of an interrupted/incomplete command they are given which could realistically begin World War III. It's a situation in which BOTH of them are right and exposes a real problem in the "chain of command" and "following orders" edicts the military lives by.

Although over-acted at times and containing some uneven writing (both trademarks of any Bruckheimer film), the essence of the story involving potentially conflicting orders is handled very well. The acting is compelling most of the time, the script proposes real-life possibilities, and the direction is smooth and confident. This is solid entertainment and surprisingly thought-provoking.

3 out of 5 stars Would I Want An XO Like Him?.......2007-06-02

I dunno, but I feel that Denzel's character had an "attitude" that was, well, odd. I wonder what die-hard Navy types would say about him. And then would a nuclear sub have a commander as old as Hackman? This is an interesting film, but I would like to know how it would "play out" in the real Navy.

3 out of 5 stars The film editor got it right the first time........2007-01-06

Crimson Tide is one of my favorite films, and I have watched it numerous times on my old VHS copy. Although I read some of the Amazon reviews before buying the new "unrated and extended edition", I did not want to believe that it wasnt worth buying. Well, I wish I had bought the original. The added scenes diminish the tightness of the original and add no needed content. The one bonus is that you can see the talent of the editor who was responsible for the first version.

Released well after Douglas Fairbanks's and Errol Flynn's heydays, this good-natured Burt Lancaster vehicle is, nevertheless, a superior example of the classic swashbuckler: set in the 16th century, along the Spanish Main, this lusty adventure both expands on and explodes genre conventions. Lancaster, a circus acrobat before turning to movies in the '40s, gives what may be his most physical performance as sword-for-hire Captain Vallo, a.k.a. the Crimson Pirate.

Nick Cravat, Lancaster's real-life circus buddy, matches the star leap for leap, somersault for somersault as Vallo's mute sidekick. The fetching Eva Bartok causes Vallo to throw over the Spanish for rebel forces, and a young Christopher Lee demonstrates the swordsmanship that would later make him a natural in Richard Lester's The Three Musketeers.

Director Robert Siodmak, known for his claustrophobic noir thrillers (1946's The Killers), handled most of the interiors, while Lancaster coordinated the tongue-in-cheek humor and macho derring-do. The broadly played action scenes, including the climactic 18-minute battle aboard a frigate, wouldn't be improved on for another three decades--by Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark. The big difference: Harrison Ford needed a stunt double, Lancaster didn't. --Glenn Lovell

Description

Notorious raider of the eighteenth century sea lanes, Captain Vallo, a.k.a. The Crimson Pirate, and his band of buccaneers overtake a Spanish galleon filled with guns and ammunition. When he decides to sell the stolen arsenal to rebel leader El Libre on the island of Cobra, the representative of Spain, Baron Gruda, offers Vallo 50,000 florins if he will deliver El Libre instead. Vallo is soon caught between the Spanish, the rebellion, and even the mutiny of his own men. But having allen in love with El Libre's daughter Consuelo, Vallo gains back his crew's trust and leads the island of Cobra to freedom.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Pirates of the Caribbean.......2007-02-14

It was fun to watch Burt Lancaster frolic on the ropes of his sailing frigate. After watching serious roles that he played in Elmer Gantry, Mr. 880, the Train, Bird Man of Alcatraz, and Judgment at Nurenberg, it was refreshing to see him back recreating his days as an acrobat. He is like Sean Connery. Dashing when he was young, and handsome as he aged. His circus sidekick was also a delight to watch, and, as a team, they were unbeatable. Burt obviously loved this role, as he is smiling from start to finish. A real adventure.

5 out of 5 stars Burt Lancaster at his funniest, totally outragious.......2007-01-04

Recomended for anyone with a sence of humor. I've loved this movie sence the first time I saw it, too many years ago to count. Sword fighting, brawling, and misplaced (timewise) inventions. All done to tickle your funny bone. Too bad they don't have six stars to rate this.

5 out of 5 stars Lancaster has given the modern cinema more "pure enjoyment" than almost any other major star!.......2006-12-24

It's doubtful whether any pirate ever looked like Lancaster, rigged out in a succession of exaggeratedly modish outfits and bleached-blond hair... He is the 18th-century pirate swashbuckler to end all swashbucklers!

With his mute, but athletic side-kick friend Nick Cravat, Lancaster leads an island's people in rebellion against the tyrant Baron Gruda... His damsel is Eva Bartok, the freewheeling European beauty...

I don't know how many times I have seen this buccaneer saga, and still I love it... The film provides lots of thrills and laughs, lots of adventures and excitement ...

Great fun all the time...

Lancaster's sense of comedy was evident enough for critic Alton Cook to call him "one of our most amiable and strenuous comedians."

For me, Lancaster will be always remembered as the actor who has given the modern cinema more "pure enjoyment" than almost any other major star...

5 out of 5 stars The Crimson Pirate seen again after many years.......2006-08-26

I saw the original theater release - and was reminded again of one of the funniest takeoffs on "Pirate" movies. Lancaster is often thought of as a dramatic actor (see Elmer Gantry), but here he shows great comedian skills combined with amazing physical stunts. My wife had never seen the movie, and she laughed herself almost into histeria. - so it is a great movie to see the first time, and just as wonderful the 2, 3,.....? times.

5 out of 5 stars BURT IS MAGNIFICENT!.......2006-08-20

When I was 11 years old back in 1960 I saw the "Crimson Pirate" on TV for the first time. From then on Burt Lancaster was my favorite actor until the likes of DeNiro, Nicholson, Newman, Hoffman and Pacino etc. As previous reviewers have stated the athleticism of Lancaster & his childhood friend Nick Cravat (ex circus performers)cannot be beat. There are no actors today who could do that. Before Burt it was Douglas Fairbanks. Ahh, to see Burt's pearly whites flashing again brought back many memories. Now realize, this movie is not to be taken serious. Just sit back and have fun watching it. My wife thought it was very silly(which it can be), but she missed the whole point.
I bought this movie after seeing Johnny Depps "Pirates" with my 22 year old son. We both loved "Pirates" but I wanted him to see the "Crimson Pirate". And, he liked it. Tough guy Burt, ex:"From Here to Eternity" really hams it up here.
I am very happy I purchased this movie because I will get much enjoyment from it. So, sit back and enjoy but bring your sense of humor.

Legendary police commissioner Niémans (Jean Reno) travels to a remote university village in the Alps to solve a grisly murder while hotheaded Lieutenant Kerkerian (Hate's Vincent Cassel) is investigating the desecration of the tomb of a young girl killed in an auto accident 20 years ago. When the detectives discover that the incidents are related, they reluctantly join forces. The Crimson Rivers looks French but feels American. If it doesn't hit the heights of The Silence of the Lambs or Seven, it bests many of the thrillers that have followed in their wake. Mathieu Kassovitz directs as if this were high art, which is actually to the film's benefit: the cast is terrific (including Jean-Pierre Cassel, Vincent's father), the cinematography is stunning, and the classy score evokes The Exorcist. Although the mountaintop showdown at the end doesn't quite work, The Crimson Rivers is still a superior entrant into an increasingly overcrowded genre. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars COLD GUTS ............2007-08-06

Bone chilling!

A Nasty little thriller about an exclusive University somewhere in the Alps. Reno defines "cool" as the very non-Clouseau Inspector, as does Cassel as the Young-eager-beaver sidekick. There's lots of action and mystery in this one - along the lines of a really good Agatha Christie, with a tiny touch of Hitchcock, but watch out for avalanches, very sharp objects, a rabid canine or two and wolly winter wear. [It somehow cries out for Black Edwards and the late Peter Sellers - irreverent thought, but would be fun too!]

Dominique Sanda provides a great cameo [somewhere in the dusky shades].

Brooding, atmospheric and deadly, quite a frozen little sorbet - no minty aftertaste though!

3 out of 5 stars Over the top religious action mishmash.......2007-07-17

You need to love Jean Reno to be able to get through this over complicated French action thriller which deals with our man for all seasons Reno saving us from a German SS man's quest for a re-forming of religious structures hidden in clues deep in the fortified tunnels built along the borders of Germany and France before the Second World War. Early on the killing of people by hooded zealots using planted religious metaphors to link the crimes indicated something that may have proved ultimately more rewarding - but this was not to be.
Great digital sound though!

4 out of 5 stars Blood Glacier .......2007-07-13

I have been a fan of Jean Reno's since I saw "The Big Blue" and "The Professional". Best known in the U.S. for his performance in "Mission: Impossible" and "Ronin", he has a great deal of talent. I think if I wasn't a fan I probably would have missed this gem of a movie. I enjoy murder mysteries and this was a good one. Fans of movies like "Kiss the Girls" and "Jennifer 8" won't be disappointed. Reno plays a detective sent down from Paris to help the local police to solve an unusual murder. The body was in an odd position and condition for bodies of victims. While he is investigating the case another local Lieutenant, played by Vincent Cassel, finds a girls tomb vandalized and an unusual story about her. The cases begin to intertwine and the action steps up several notches. Excellent acting and the cinematography is beautiful. Good music as well. I was pleasantly rewarded for taking the time to watch this foreign made movie. The production values on it are as good as I have seen on any American made movie. I recommend it strongly.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous over the top fun..........2007-06-24

This is what movies are really all about! Crimson Rivers is a slick bloody thriller starring international mega stars Vincent Cassel and Jean Reno who make a terrific pairing as cop and investigator who's paths cross while trying to solve a horrific murder. The chemistry between actors is right-on as they team up together digging to uncover a ridiculously wonderful labyrinthine plot in search of the truth.
With it's big budget sleek aesthetic, "Rivers" is absolutely gorgeous to watch; meticulous and cinematic in lush European settings. The plot has a touch of everything including ample doses of horror, noir, cop buddy picture, thriller, etc. but at it's heart it's really a throwback to the European "gialli" of the 60's & 70's; a convoluted spider web whodunit full of twists, turns and red herrings that will leave the viewer guessing until the tail end. All the "giallo" signatures are here: a breathtaking setting (a private college at the base of the Alps), palpable atmosphere layered on thick, gore-a-plenty, the mandatory car chase, a hooded unseen killer, and of course the story itself which won't be disclosed here, but really, the list goes on and on; essentially everything but the kitchen sink is used to good measure.
"Rivers" helped to kick start the French "thriller" renaissance; a strong example of how the French continue to make better thrillers than anyone in the world. This may be a tad too sophisticated for American audiences and those unfamiliar with "gialli" may find this slightly ludicrous. However, for those that want a riveting thrill ride with some serious chills, this is a cadeaux of perfection.

4 out of 5 stars TERROR IN THE ALPS.......2007-05-23

Director Mathieu Kassovitz whose movie La Haine (Criterion Collection) has just entered the prestigious Criterion collection, co-wrote and directed THE CRIMSON RIVERS, based on Jean-Christophe Grangé's Blood-Red Rivers, in 2000. Mathieu Kassovitz, like Luc Besson and a few others, belongs to this new generation of French directors who try to deliver films shot "à la Hollywood" without losing their particular and local specificities.

I liked a lot the first half-hour of THE CRIMSON RIVERS with its tragic and heavy mood and its flamboyant direction but I am a little less convinced by the second half of the film as soon as it becomes a buddy movie in the LETHAL WEAPON style. Too many references or hommages to American films, too many easy jokes and sometimes almost laughable dialogues. But, all in all, THE CRIMSON RIVERS is a movie I sincerely recommend to those of you who aren't satisfied any more with the actual Hollywood production.

A DVD zone it's French but it's not boring.

A must see for King Crimson fans or progressive rock in general. Mainly recent instrumental songs played. An excellent concert well captured.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2006-10-06

This is truly a great DVD. From a musical and compositional point of view, I much preferred the earlier incarnation of King Crimson ie the "Wetton" years. However from a purely technical point of view, I believe this latest incarnation is the best. Each musician is a master of his instrument and you get a great opportunity to see them execute their talents.
They are just brilliant, each blending together to produce some of the most exceptional musicic you will ever hear.
My only complaint is that Fripp tends to overdo his "Frippertronics". His guitar sounds more like a mellotron than a guitar. Luckily, Adrian Belew makes up for it with his astounding skill on guitar.
I haven't played the DVD too many times but already I am favouring the "Bootleg" dvd from 2000 over than the "Live in Japan" DVD in 2003.

5 out of 5 stars musical mayhem!.......2006-04-08

This DVD defies logic! Not only does it insert different improvs on the second disc each time it is played, but, also, Robert Fripp plays a full string section through his guitar!!!

5 out of 5 stars Music that deserves to be seen.......2006-03-21

I've always felt that the experience of viewing chamber music truly enhances appreciation. And King Crimson is chamber music (according to the definition of Chamber Music America) -- very loud, aggressive, quirky, virtuosic rock chamber music. The two concerts on this DVD are well-shot and edited to document the incredible musicianship, including Trey Gunn's elegant two-handed technique on the Warr touch guitar and Robert Fripp's masterful manipulation of his battery of electronic processing devices. And how DOES Adrian Belew wrench all those sounds out of a plain old guitar? Yes, all that music really IS made almost entirely by guitars, with the rock solid backing of drummer Pat Mastelotto. I've found that even people who don't like the King Crimson sound are fascinated by the visual spectacle of the music being made. This double DVD of King Crimson as a quartet is a welcome companion to the earlier "Deja Vroom" video, which documented the double-trio version of band that adds drummer Bill Bruford and versatile bass master Tony Levin.

5 out of 5 stars Pebozo's stuck in 1976 USA .......2005-11-04

Yes I love King Crimson of the Wetton years but the modern Crimson is great also. This DVD demonstrates that this version of Crimson was the most interesting since the Wetton years. And, it is quite sad that several have dismissed this version of Crimson. I especially like the rythm section of Mastelotto and Gunn. These guys really create a unique sound.

Neal and Jack and Me resurrects two stellar and long out-of-print King Crimson videos, Three of a Perfect Pair: Live in Japan 1984 and The Noise: Live in Frejus 1982, lacing them with a few tasty extras, including a video clip for "Sleepless." Crimson's 1980s lineup--Adrian Belew, Robert Fripp, Tony Levin, and Bill Bruford--is for many fans the quintessential incarnation of Fripp's still-evolving cast of virtuosic characters. In both shows, these artists embody all that's great in progressive music: instrumental prowess, yes, but also deft interplay, daring improvisation, and a synthesis of unique musical visions into something far greater than the considerable sum of its parts.

The Frejus show was filmed, while the Japan show was videotaped. Picture quality isn't great, but the DVD improves on the contrast and color vibrancy of the original releases. Likewise, sound quality is adequate: neither exemplary nor substandard. It's all about the music. Note: The version of Three of a Perfect Pair: Live in Japan 1984 included on this release is that of the 1991 reissue, which has a slightly different running order than the original 1984 release and omits the song "Discipline." --Michael Mikesell

Brand new DVD of King Crimson in the 1980's. Showcasing one of the defining live acts of the period. As Robert Fripp puts it "Records and live performance are two worlds. One is a love letter, the other a hot date. Crimson were always the band for a hot date."

These two concerts offer different and contrasting snapshots of the 80's Crimson: Live in Frejus, heavily featuring material from the album Beat and filmed on tour in Europe with Roxy Music; and Three of a Perfect Pair showcasing the band's triumphant 1984 Japanese performances.

5 out of 5 stars Larks Tongues In Aspic: The Movie.......2007-02-07

I'm very happy that they put this out on DVD. This features both the band's 1980's concert videos in one release. Although the Live In Japan video is from the 1991 reissue which features different song placements than the first 80's release as well as leaving off Discipline. Both Live In Japan 1984 and Live In Frejus 1982 were originally tv specials if I remember right. The performances here are excellent and I find it hard to single out favorites. The band is in top form in both shows. The 1982 show they were sharing a bill with Roxy Music. I wish that they had released some extra songs on here but I am happy that Robert Fripp saw fit to release these together one one release instead of dragging it out and making us have to buy them separate. This does include all the basic tunes from the 80's line-up(ie Heartbeat, Elephant Talk, Sleepless, ect) as well as a couple of different versions of Larks Tongues In Aspic Part 2. If you like King Crimson you'll love this.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" for Fans of the 80's Incarnation of King Crimson.......2006-03-20

The Fripp/Bruford/Levin/Belew lineup was my personal favorite. This DVD is, therefore, required viewing. The production is great and the performances are of the highest order. If you like this lineup of King Crimson, you simply must have this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars I do remember one thing....I LIKE IT!!!!.......2006-01-09

Let me first begin by saying that this is, in my opinion one of the best line-ups this band has ever put together. If you are unfamiliar with the group here's a little background. The only constant in the band has been Robert Fripp. He started the group in 1969. Since then there have been many incarnations. In fact if memory serves the line-up is never the same on any album until we reach the 1980's with this particular line-up. They've even lost and gained members during their many concert tours as well, I also believe that during the 1972 tour Boz Burrel (drummer) was replaced with Bill Bruford because Boz was too drunk, and missed a few shows. Here's the line-up for these two videos: Adrian Belew (Lead Guitar, Backing Drums, Mellotron, and Lead Vocals) he hails from Frank Zappa, and Talking Heads fame. If you watch these videos you'll see some of his Talking Heads roots. Next is Tony Levin, a studio bassist who has roots with Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Genesis and even played with Pink Floyd (on tour) and ABHW (Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe). Levin plays Bass, Bass Synth, and the Chapman Stick® a 10-string Bass-Guitar touch board instrument that is just phenomenal and backing vocals as well. Bill Bruford plays Drums (Batterie) Electronic Drums and the Tongue Drum as well as various and sundry percussion instruments. Bill joined the band in 1972 on the Lark's Tongues In Aspic album, after leaving Yes behind as Jon Anderson would not allow him to branch out and experiment with electronics and other percussion instruments like the tongue drum. Plus he was only getting "5% for nothing" cf. Yes' album Fragile. Then there's Bobby (Robert) Fripp, he plays Lead and rhythm guitar, as well as mellotron and Frippertronics®, his signature guitar-synth machine.
First you should watch "Live at Frejus", it's a short video, only part of the entire set list is represented here. On the special features for this DVD you can hear a good version of "Elephant Talk" recorded at this venue but not seen on the video portion....it can be heard on Tony's Photo Album in the Special Features section. Mostly this concert is from the Beat album (1980, the blue album). The opening song is great Bill and Adrian play the electronic drum kit in tandem, and it's a joy to see how they put this song together live since in the studio they can dub and overlay tracks....namely Bill and Adrian playing electronic drums while at the same time playing the acoustic drums, electric guitar and singing....impossible to do all at once live. Tony's driving rhythms on the Stick®, and walking bass-lines (also on the Stick®) are just incredible to watch. He makes the Stick® look WAY to easy to play....almost makes it look as easy to play as a simple whistle! In fact he hardly ever looks at the thing, rather stares at his protégés or into the audience. Bill's drum solo just before "Indiscipline" is perhaps one of the best drum solos in the industry, and although John Bonham of Led Zeppelin fame was the first to use an electronic and acoustic kit cf. "Bonzeau's Montreaux" Bill is by far the master of electronic, and acoustic drums. He's never been a fan of the drum solo from what I hear, and even though it's short, it's extremely sweet. Robert is most likely the fastest guitar player in the industry. Some people say Yngwei Malmstein is fast....well he hasn't got SHE IT on little Bobby Fripp here. Now both concerts have been remastered in 5.1 surround, and as such, you can hear many of the limitations of the original analog audio recordings on Frejus. But it's the visuals of seeing these master musicians play their instruments which is the best part. They are all virtuosos. The video shows it's age too, but if you are a true fan, you will overlook these minor flaws. "Waiting Man", "Neal and Jack and Me", and "Sheltering Sky" are all incredibly awesome to see played "live". Encore songs "Heartbeat" and "Lark's Tongues In Aspic Part II" are also awesome....who am I kidding the entire Frejus set is awesome....you'll love it, I did!
Now after you've watched the Frejus concert, go and change your shorts....I know you'll need to by this point, then flick over to the "Japan" concert. Here the band shines once again, playing a fuller concert on video, with a few "old school" KC songs, and a good mix of the 1980's line-up songs from Beat (Blue), Discipline (Red) and Three Of A Perfect Pair (Yellow). You can tell which album a song is from as the background behind the band will be , Blue, Yellow or Red....Adrian even mentions this during the video. Here's a few kewl points: 1) There are 4 short vignettes toward the beginning where they show each member, just prior to the concert. Robert is even seen playing "Fracture" on his electric guitar sans amp. The set list is great, again as stated earlier a great mix of songs both old and new, though mostly new. And finally the sound is much better than the Frejus recording. Adrian makes some amazing sounds, and plays feedback better than anyone else in the biz, you'll see what I mean if you get this video. For fans of the old KC you'll get to see "Lark's Tongues In Aspic Parts II and III". Too bad they didn't play Part I as well! The only problems I have with this particular concert video is all the stupid "Dr. Who" type video effects. They are not only superfluous and cheap looking, but also totally unnecessary, and in my opinion detract from the overall enjoyment of those few songs where the effects are too heavy. If I wanted to see those kinds of effects during this concert video I would have dropped 2 hits of acid, and smoked some KB before hitting play. Overall this is a 15-Star DVD set on a scale of 1-10 stars. You will not be disappointed in these videos, whether you are true KC fan, or just a beginning Prog Rock upstart. Go change your shorts again and start them both over and watch them once more! Thanks and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Crimson Comes to Life.......2005-10-17

Neal and Jack and Me is a must have dvd. There's something special about seeing such intricate music come to life in a live format. All members in this incarnation of King Crimson put in performances of the highest quality. Songs from Three of a Perfect Pair such as Industry are given a new sense of freedom and excitement. The picture is of a very high quality considering it is coming from a video transfer and the surround sound is brilliant. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A Light In The Dark Ages.......2005-08-27

For many, the 1980's were the dark ages of popular music. For example, in 1982, Olivia Newton-John,'s 'Let's Get Physical' was the number one song of the year. In 1984, Prince's 'When Doves Cry' was at the top of the charts. Beyond 'keeping the torch lit' during such years, King Crimson kept it raging for high-minded progressive rock. This DVD is a video testament to such power. During such moments, they may look as cheesy as "Men at Work" or "Duran Duran," with their clothes, guitars and electric drums. But make no mistake, this was one of the premium King Crimson line-ups. During "the Beat" and "Indiscipline" time periods, Adrian Belew, Robert Fripp, Tony Levin and Bill Bruford were a combination of virtuosity and good timing. Indeed, the world would never again see such a synchronicity of song writing, vocals, instrumental brilliance, chemistry and flat-out creativity. The sound is futuristic by today's standards. This music would eventually lay the foundation for the up and coming jamband revolution. Les Claypool solidified this sentiment when he made 'Thela Hun Ginjeet' a staple of his live shows. Beyond "Neal and Jack and Me" being the essential video of King Crimson's 80's period, it is the only video document of the band's climax.

French sensation The Crimson Rivers was a serial killer thriller with a difference--it was genuinely thrilling. It was also pretty disturbing, but Jean Reno (The Professional) brought some light to the darkness with his sly performance as dog-phobic detective Niémans. Fortunately, Reno has returned in this highly stylized Luc Besson-penned sequel. Vincent Cassell has not, but Benoît Magimel (The Piano Teacher), as new partner Reda, makes for a decent replacement. Alas, Olivier Dahan isn't in the same league as Matthieu Kassovitz and the story line, which has something to do with the Last Supper, the Maginot Line, and gravity-defying killer monks, is even more convoluted than before. Then there's Johnny Hallyday (The Man on the Train) as a mysterious one-eyed man and Christopher Lee (The Lord of the Rings) as a bad German dude. It's all a little ridiculous, but entertaining nonetheless, and the chase sequences are a treat. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

Jean Reno is back in action as Commissioner Niemans. The body he found in a monastery seems to point to a ritualistic sacrifice and a portent of something strange to come. At the same time, young police captain Reda finds a man in agony who's an exact DNA match for Christ. Reda quickly finds out his case is directly linked to Niemans, but is the Apocalypse really about to begin as all signs seem to indicate?

In the vein of "Indiana Jones" meets "The Davinci Code" it unfolds along the lines of "Law & Order : SVU" and "Seven" - very creepy - borders somewhat on the supernatural but once you're thrown into the Melange - you're stuck.

Reno is Excellent as Niemans - as is the Beniot Magimel as his side-kick [literally a role requiring physical stamina] and Camille Natta as the Expert on Revelations.

This one's quite a treat in all aspects, especially the minimal yet very effective art direction.

Styalish, creepy and load of dark fun!

3 out of 5 stars Mad Nazi Monks .......2007-07-27

I'm not sure why this is tied to "Crimson Rivers" since the only thing in common is there are Nazis. This movie goes in more for action than mystery. It is a decent movie but the separate investgations like in the first movie aren't as mysterious and the other police officer is not as appealing a character or actor as Vincent Cassel was in the first movie. Cassel made a good partner for Reno in the first movie and I would have preferred he had been in this one as well. Cassel did better when he was on his own and he had chemistry when he was with Reno. It would have also given a little more credence to it being a sequel.

A group of religious men hiding from Nazis that work out of a monastery with underground tunnels to Marginot bunkers was not quite as intrigueing as the serial killer at a university in the mountains. Mainly I think because Crimson Rivers was made to be a murder mystery and it did a great job of dropping clues that you could follow. This movie is more like something thrown together and tries very hard for intense action and not enough on the mystery. The story centers on a murder investigation at a monastery leading to further investigations of monks killing people. They find out the monks are actually Nazis looking for a religious artifact. It is still certainly worth seeing, just don't look for it to be anything like a sequel to the first movie. Worth a rental or possibly buying as a set with "Crimson Rivers".

4 out of 5 stars ANGELS WITH DIRTY WINGS.......2006-03-22

This second CRIMSON RIVERS entry suffers from its predecessor's curse of having too intricate a plot that ultimately doesn't satisfy the viewer with its complex undertones. Jean Reno is back investigating the murders of a cult fashioned after the twelve apostles. Christopher Lee has a smallish role as a demented German out to instigate the Apocalypse. It's all rather confusing but it is done with such flair and finesse, it's an entertaining conundrum at best.

5 out of 5 stars More Crimson Rivers..........2006-01-09

A very good movie, Crimson Rivers-Angels of the Apocalypse, sheds light on a series of horrendous murders committed in the province of Lorraine near the French-German border. When a pair of investigators team up to solve the mystery they soon realize that all is not as it seems in this quiet and picturesque part of the French countryside...
There are slight hints of Seven, the Ninth Gate, the Da Vinci Code, and the X-Files, so the movie falls into the action/adventure/mystery/thriller/horror type of category.
Jean Reno, Benoit Magimel, Camille Natta, Christopher Lee, and the rest of the cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least! All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows allowing for a highly entertaining movie.
The plot, the setting, and the music are all EXCELLENT.
Overall, it is a movie definitely worth watching, as it is one of those films that gets you and keeps you thinking long after it's over! 4½ Stars

5 out of 5 stars Sweet way to spend an afternoon.......2005-11-20

I saw this while visiting family in Poland, so it was all ready translated into my language and I could concentrate on the movie instead of reading subtitles.

This movie had murky, creepy and dark foes that were insanely fast and unstoppable. It starts off with a bang and it takes you on a search for the Holy Grail type of a ride with evil superhuman monks, dead bodies, catacombs and monasteries with deep dark secrets.

I sat down and didn't stop paying attention till it was over. Jean Reno is great; you just have to enjoy his presence because he does what he knows well. Also there was a scene where his fellow officer Reda who runs amok chasing this monk and they are running on roofs, trains, jumping off buildings, for like 3 minutes. No strings and computer magic just run out of breath chase. It was amazing; my favorite part of the movie and it really imbedded itself into my head.

Great flick, it has action, suspense, blood and gore, secrets and history; a sweet way to spend an afternoon.

3 out of 5 stars Let the buyer beware.......2005-08-09

The movie itself is very good. Unfortunately, the film was made in French and dubbed in English. The quality of sound is poor. Such much so, that one cannot understand everything that is being said. I thought buying the DVD and using the subtitles in English would make the dialogue easier to follow. Not so. The subtitles do not match what is being said by the actors. They left out descriptions. They rephrase conversations completely. They botch up slang. They did a POOR job. It is amateurish and distracting. Good movie spoiled by shoddy translating.

4 out of 5 stars Great for King Crimson fans.......2007-01-09

If you like King Crimson, you'll like the video. There are two aspects - the band's performance and the video production. The performance is unmistakably Crimson. They're tight and loose at the same time, and seemingly all having a blast except for the stoick Fripp, who's probably having fun in his own universe. Great drumming and playing by all the members, as expected. I thoroughly enjoyed the show.

I was a little disappointed that the format, one in which you can isolate the camera on a single player, was limited to only a few songs. The menus and other selections could have been a little easier to navigate through; it takes awhile to actually view and track down everything that's on the disk, but it's a fun challenge if you have nothing else to do. And the "extras" are all relatively interesting, though I doubt there are many who will read Fripp's pretentious observations on the music business and about some of his legal wrangelings. At any rate, buy it, especially if you've never seen them live.

5 out of 5 stars Worth every bit, in spite of it's problems.......2006-08-05

Video quality's not great, and the menu setup is a pain to navigate, but to be able to see a band of this quality, I can cope. They rarely tour, so these recordings are pretty much all we have. Buy it, you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars just rewatched video after years and years.......2006-02-27

I was astonished by this incarnation of kc when it reformed. i saw two shows from this tour and i was blown away. I have been busy listening to the post 2000 band and kind of put this away for a while. Sometimes when you do you come back to it and it's more mind bending then it was originally. What a amazing performance and sound. The 6 piece was defintely very special and now with dgmlive and etc. They are Im sure going to put recordings from 94-96 era. Video wise Im not sure how much was shot. Maybe that bootleg from argentina tv floating around

4 out of 5 stars Clearless & Highly Thrakked.......2005-09-12

This was the first King Crimson DVD I have purchased, an I am seriously considering buying more.
It was very exciting to see the group live, especially this being the Double Trio, which I believe is the best line-up out of KC's on-again off-again revolving door history.
Robert Fripp is probably one of THE eccentric figures in rock. I can't think of another musician that would go out of his way to shun the spotlight ONSTAGE. He sits upstage between the drummers, shrouded in darkness with occasional glimpses of his deceptively complex shredding.
Adrian Belew is a great showman and a guitar WIZARD. Keep an eye out on "Thrak" for a "bit" of fun!
Tony Levin is just awe-inspiring. Bass, Stick, bowed upright bass, etc. Nice pipes, too. Just an all-around solid player.
Trey Gunn keeps modest but deadly. Wears a good shirt.
Bill Bruford is yellow as all get-out, and his playing can be a little "hey-look-at-me" at times, but he's still one of the best boppers about.
Pat Mastelotto keeps a good backbeat and has little to do sometimes besides shake a maraca or strike a drumhead. He seems to be having the most fun, besides Adrian.
The DVD itself is curious. The menu can be a little annoying, and the graphics are atrocious. Still, Fripp's essays are engaging, as are Tony's home-movies. Sound is excellent.
I recommend to even KC newcomers.

1 out of 5 stars Music OK, DVD is insane, video quality awful........2005-03-19

First, the menuing and navigation system is the stupidest and most counterproductive I have seen on a DVD. Normally if I don't like the menus I just use chapter / track search, but that is disabled when playing this DVD.

I don't understand why they bothered to include a DTS track unless it was so they could put a "DTS" sticker on the label and fool everyone into thinking this is a well-mastered DVD. It is not. Also the "Audio" track selection is disabled, so you have to search around the menus to eventually find "vector control" to set the audio.

Video quality is very bad. Lighting was apparently a problem, camera lenses were dirty and there was excessive glare.
