The Fullmetal Alchemist theatrical feature, The Conqueror of Shamballa, takes place two years after the last episode of the popular broadcast series. Edward Elric has been transported to Earth and is living in Weimar-era Munich with Alphonse Heiderich, a young engineer who reminds him of Al. This Alphonse is working for the Thule Society, a group of Aryan fanatics who hope to cross dimensions to the world they call Shambala and acquire weapons that will ensure a German victory in the next war. Back in the world where the broadcast series took place, a restored Alphonse Elric searches for a way to bring Ed back. A combination of science and alchemy finally reunites the brothers--with unexpected consequences. Although the film is an exciting adventure that includes many of the familiar characters, viewers who haven't watched the TV series may have trouble sorting out who's who and what's where. Sadly, The Conqueror of Shamballa marks the end of director Seiji Mizushima's and screenwriter Shou Aikawa's work with the Elric brothers: together, they preserved the essence of Hiromu Arakawa's winning characters while adapting them to a new medium. Arakawa is continuing the manga, so fans may one day see further animated adventures of Ed and Al.(Rated PG: violence, grotesque imagery, brief nudity, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars Not what I expected or wanted, but exactly what I needed........2007-09-13

Like other reviewers, I must stress that this movie is not a stand alone feature. You must watch the anime to even have the faintest idea of what is going on.

That said, I love the anime and decided to purchase this movie to give me the resolution I needed after the final episode. I must admit, it doesn't have the perfectly wrapped happy ending that I hoped for - but that's part of the whole point. The world isn't perfect (something that both Ed and Al comment on) and the resolution of their story lines isn't immediately perfect, but after thinking about it, there was no better resolution.

I wish there would have been a little less of the "set up" and a lot more "alchemy action" but still, a very enjoyable movie overall. I laughed, I got a little weepy eyed, and I was finally ready to close the book on FMA (well sort of... I wouldn't be upset if they decided to do another anime.)

4 out of 5 stars Perfect end for a great series.......2007-08-08

While it's true there are some areas of the movie which lack and should have contained more, and the main 'bad guy' was a little on the flaky side, overall I found it to be the perfect ending for the series. Some fans are unhappy that the imagined relationship between Ed and Winry was never to happen (and never will happen). Tough luck I say, as the series was never about that fluff to begin with, it was about the brother's journey together and it remained true to that all the way through. The end of the movie really helped the series come full circle. My only wish it that it had been much longer!

    Product Description

It's easy to understand why Fullmetal Alchemist has regularly topped viewer polls in Japan since its debut in 2003: the fantasy-adventure by director Mizushima Seiji (Generator Gawl) offers a satisfying blend of slapstick comedy, exciting adventure, and genuine warmth. Young Alphonse and Edward Elric delve into forbidden knowledge when they use alchemy to try to bring their mother back from the dead--and pay a terrible price under the principle of "equivalent trade." Al becomes a disembodied soul in a suit of armor; Ed loses an arm and a leg, but later receives mechanical prostheses. The brothers wander through a world that resembles late 19th century Europe, seeking the legendary Philosopher's Stone, which they believe can restore their bodies. Unlike American programs that juxtapose smart-aleck humor and heavy-handed sermonizing, Fullmetal Alchemist has real heart. Neither the comedy nor the action detract from the bond between the brothers that constitutes the emotional core of the series. Complete 14 DVD Bundle consisting of the entire 51 episode TV series plus the movie!

    5 out of 5 stars Profound Anime.......2007-08-25

Heart felt profound production. The story line of two children left alone and their passage thru their world and those who touched them leave one with a quiet introspection of their own lives and the worth there-in. A MUST SEE (you don't want to miss this, they only come along once in a life time....but I hope for another!).

    1 out of 5 stars BOOTLEG ALERT!!!.......2007-08-18

This is not officially produced by FUNimation, the company that produced Fullmetal Alchemist. FUNimation has never released any DVD bundles or boxsets of this series; in fact, the first boxset (of DVD's 1-4 - that's the first 16 episodes) is being released September 18 of this year (according to Anime News Network).

In other words, DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! You will be only supporting the bootleggers, and you will probably get a bad-quality product in return. Buy the individual DVD's, or wait for the OFFICIAL box sets to come out!

    1 out of 5 stars DON"T BUY THIS.......2007-08-18

I would make SURE that you contact the seller, by the IMAGE i was under the impression that this would be a collection, rather then a one box set of copied discs, in CHINESE, not Japanese.

hitting this with an official BOOTLEG BEWARE! sticker, at least for the series discs, the movie disc was however legit.

3 out of 5 stars OK just if you wanna series...BUT..........2007-07-06

An ok buy if you want to just watch the series with no special features, nav menus, and such, not even a choice of watching the series in japanese if you wanted... 1 Disc didn't play well in a DVD player or PS2, but played on my computer. the video and sound quality is good to fair. it vary's from episode to episode. The cases and dvd labels were made on a home printer. so it's all most likely a RIPPED COPY. The movie wasn't done well... as far as vid quality. sound was good. Was in Japanese with HORRID english subtitles... mispellings, subltitles in the wrong place, and sometime repeating in totally different parts of the movie.

I would only recommend this to those who don't have the money (like mwa) or just want to see the series + movie for the sake of just seeing it... if you want the series and movie with the works, quality, and features, you should wait a bit and buy the real set.

3 out of 5 stars An okay collection, but leaves alot to be desired..........2007-06-23

I just bought this recently... So far, it's pretty good, but I have some problems with it... Namely because it has a compadibility issue with PS2. I watch most of my DVDs in my room, using my PS2 to play them, but this set doesn't read so well inside my PS2... Blurring of images, pixalization, and skiping...
At first I thought my PS2 was dirty, so I cleaned it, but the problem persisted. At one point I thought my PS2 was broken, but after testing other DVDs in it I knew it was the disc itself. It plays just fine in an ordinary DVD player though, so if you don't own a PS2 or simply don't use it for DVD playback, then this set of DVDs is fine.
These DVDs lack option menus & scene selections, only play in English with no option to change the track to Japanese with English subtitles, and the credits haven't been traslated... No biggie though, all of the signs & things in the show are in English, considering that FMA is based in a western-style culture, but still... Lack of options, special features, and the PS2 compadibility issues really make this collection suffer.

Pros: A full collection of the Fullmetal Alchemist series! Contains episodes 1 through 51 plus the movie! 3 volumes on 5 disks, great for space-saving! Great picture quality, crystal clear sound, good mastering! Full screen presentation.

Cons: Certain episodes do not play well on a PlayStation 2.
Cases artwork is nothing more than a copy of the artwork on the first 3 volumes of the American release, done on a crumby printer!
Artwork on cases leads me to believe that this is not an import, but more likely a pirated copy.
    No navigation menus!
    No scene selection!
    No options what so ever!
DVD will begin playing episode 1 from the instant you load it into your DVD player, so you have to hit the "Disc Menu" button on your remote or Triangle on your Dual Shock 2 if you want to go to the Episode Index and choose which episode you want to view.
Why does Edward Elric have both of his normal arms at the Episode Index menu??!!

Overall: An okay choice if you're low on cash, or just don't want to spend alot on the complete FMA series. This is a very basic, "bare bones" collection with no special features, but when it comes to simplicity and price it's an okay choice. If you're looking for a collection with lots of special features, then you're probably better off buying the genuine article whenever it's released in the US.

As Fullmetal Alchemist enters its second season, Ed and Al pursue the rumor that the inhabitants of Ishbal created a Philosopher's Stone without using alchemy. If the Elrics can learn how it was accomplished, they may be able to restore their bodies without harming anyone. After an unrewarding trip with Winrey, the Elric Brothers meet the one person they fear: Izumi, their old alchemy instructor. The filmmakers intercut the Brothers' present encounter with Izumi and flashbacks of their early training, suggesting the ongoing journey to mastery of their art. But episodes 27 and 28 suffer from a cultural gap. Izumi is modeled on a traditional Zen master: she gave Ed and Al the koan "All Is One, One Is All" to unravel to test their worthiness as pupils. But in place of the slap Zen masters sometimes administer, she beats the Elrics savagely and needlessly. To Americans, Izumi acts not like a wise disciplinarian, but a brutal sadist. While her training ultimately benefits Ed and Al, these episodes don't translate emotionally. (Rated TV PG: violence, grotesque imagery, tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

    Description

Perhaps the truth about the past is its eternal presence within us all. This theory has never been more evident as the events of long ago emerge once again in the paths of Manabu and his comrades. During a routine mission, the situation becomes decidedly non-routine as the flames of the past surround Captains Murase and Julia. Can they depend on each other when their lives are on the line? David also encounters an old flame of his own when Big One is sent to rescue survivors from a small aircraft crashed on a remote planet known as the resting palce of the most beautiful jewel in the Universe. Soon, the Sirius Platoon will come face to face with a mystery that may prove true love is stronger than dark, ghostly legends.

    5 out of 5 stars Sadness.......2006-07-03

FMA now has the distinction of being one of maybe three anime and/or cartoons that have made me shed real tears (who didn't cry when Mufasa died?). This is one sad volume, starting with the very first episode and promising only to get sadder with the next volume. While I won't say who dies so as not to spoil this volume for anyone, I will say that it was a key player and definitely one of the more lovable ones.

After that, the story follows the Elric brothers as they are once again exploring their past. The boys leave Central to find more clues on the stone, but on the way they meet a person from their past who drags them away from the quest in a forceful way. Now, the boys must find a way to explain to their old alchemy teacher how they ended up the way they are, while also going through a brutal refresher course. Between all of this, Ed finds the importance of auto-mail; Scar kills; and Colonel Roy Mustang learns to cry.

Definitely the most powerful volume to date, I'm completely shocked that this series can keep getting better. New characters are introduced every other episode, and every one is so distinctive that they become instantly memorable. I can't stress this enough: Fullmetal Alchemist is the best anime series to come out since Cowboy Bebop, and any fan of anime who isn't collecting this series should hurry up and get with the program. You're missing out on something great.

The story is beyond intriguing! The homonculi reveal their dastardly plans. Scar is on the move again. The Elrics are still searching for a stone. But who is Dante and how is she connected to Ed and Al's father? Why is Izumi so protective of that strange boy? And why is he so obsessed with Ed? Find out in the continuing saga of the Fullmetal Alchemist!

(Rated TV PG: violence, alcohol use) --Charles Solomon

    5 out of 5 stars First-Rate.......2007-04-23

When I first heard about Fullmetal Alchemist and saw a few stills, I thought that it was one of those stereotypical animes with big eyes, fast-talking, and a cheesy story unworthy of the ranks of such fare as Akira or Cowboy Bebop. However, all the hype made me want to see it and eventually it absorbed me. It truly is a first rate piece of storytelling. Great dramatization, characterization, music, etc. all throughout. It has such imagination to it as it takes place in a world similar to our own except that a few centuries ago, Alchemy was discovered. Alchemy of course was a pursuit of trying to turn things into gold that was eventually dismissed as a sort of quackery. In this world though, Alchemy was discovered and developed into a full-blown science with all sorts of laws to it and everything. Yet, it's very magical in nature as well. So it's magical, yet scientific, but it works in the context of the story. The main story itself is so simple, yet develops into a complex plot of intrigue, conspiracy, and tough questions as the series unfolds. It starts off with two young brothers, Alfonsoe and Edward Elric who live with their very loving mother in an idyllic small village, mostly free from the chaos of the outside world, although their neighbor and best friend, Winry had her parents killed in faraway Ishbal during a civil war there while they were administering medical aid to both sides. Eventually the mother Trisha Elric comes down with something and dies from it. The father walked out on the mother and boys when they were younger (although he does appear near the end of the series), but the boys were able to peruse his old library and learn some basic alchemy. Being young, naive, and desperate to bring their mother back to them from the grave, they attempt to perform a human transmutation, which essentially is an attempt to bring the dead back to life, a definate no-no in alchemy. It fails though and in the process, Alfonsoe loses his body, has his soul attached to a suit of armor and Edward loses an arm and a leg (literally), which he has to get replaced with automail (term in the series for metal appendages) from his best friend, Winry, who happens to be an expert on automail. The reason is of course the Law of Equivalent Exchange, the first tenet of alchemy which states that humankind can not gain anything without giving up something equal in return. The boys now realize that it's hopeless to bring their mother back but want to find someway to get their bodies back to the way they were. Luckily, they were given an offer from a mysterious Lieutenant Colonel Roy Mustang to become a State alchemist for the State. They're willing to bite in order to gain access to the even bigger library at Central Command, but swear not to sell their souls to the State (which becomes a major conflict throughout the series).

    Significant episodes:

Episode 1, "Those Who Challenge the Sun". First appearances of Alphonsoe and Edward Elric, Rose, Roy Mustang, and the mysterious homonculi, Lust and Gluttony.

Episode 3, "Mother". The origin of the Elric brothers, what got them into their present state is all explained her. The first of a seven consecutive episodes that takes place before the first two episodes. First appearance of Pinako and Winry Rockbell and Trisha Elric.

    5 out of 5 stars One of Anime's Best.......2007-04-08

With its unique characters and plot line, Fullmetal Alchemist is probably classed as one of the best anime out there. Humorous yet dead serious at times, its episodes and progression of events never ceases to disappoint. The artwork is very nice, as well.

This anime compells many to even try Alchemy as well. I highly recommend this DVD, as well as the manga.

    5 out of 5 stars FMA.......2007-02-08

I don't have the time to be an anime junkie (though I wish I did), so I haven't seen every single anime effort put forth, but FMA was the first series I got into and...wow.

Without going into detail and spoiling what happens for an unsuspecting viewer reading through these reviews, Full Metal Alchemist is a great series full of comedy, action, and drama. The characters are created well and make you feel for them throught the series, though they aren't so in-depth that you feel like you've gained an annoying girl/boyfriend.

The story, characters, and animation in Full Metal Alchemist is awesome. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to get into the world of anime.

5 out of 5 stars This series ranks with classic literature.......2007-02-06

I am not a spring chicken, so I get introduced to anime through my daughter. Some of it is fluffy love stories or improbable characters or situations that appear from nowhere to solve the day. Full Metal is none of these. The characters are believable even when they are a talking metal suit of armor. Ed and Al are young boys. Their mother dies. They desparately want her back. They do something forbidden. They pay. And they learn what the costs are. The world is a confusing place. They navigate, sometimes on their own and sometimes with people who they meet along the way. Not everyone is who they seem at the start. Finally they confront the costs of their and other peoples violations of the rules. Through the story there is humor and growth. The story is told from their point of view. They do not give in to the tragedies that surround them and keep fighting for the truth and for each other. I highly recommend this series for young teens and old fogies (that's me). Much better than most things available for teens these days. I rank this up with Dante and Faust as literature about pacts made by people not understanding the full consequences of their actions fighting to restore the balance of their lives.

*Yes* you will read this same review on each of the DVDs for this series. I do not own them all as of yet, but have seen the series in it's entirety.

I am absolutely impressed with this show. The first time I watched any of it, I was not the least bit interested. I'm a definate anime fan, however, I'm very select about what I choose to watch (no sailor moon, or pokemon for myself thanks!). My original take on this show was that it was over-hyped and childish. At the time I was involved in another set of shows and was content, but when I finished those shows this series was rerunning from the beginning on cartoon network's adult swim, so, with nothing else to watch I thought I would give it another chance.

This time I fell in love with it, it has become one of my favorite anime's to date! The story is very indepth, and detailed. There isn't near as much "fan-service" as in other shows which can take away from the show itself, and it has relevant undertones.

I am a fan of shows like Cowboy Bebop, Trinity Blood, Trigun, Big O, FLCL (Fooly Cooly), Samuria Champloo, and such. If you share similar interests, then you may very well enjoy this show!

Edward Elric passes the qualifying exams to become the youngest State Alchemist in history, and finds new friends, new challenges, and new dangers as the popular fantasy-adventure Fullmetal Alchemist continues. Ed doesn't get much time to savor his achievement: He and his brother Alphonse face an array of foes that includes a deranged alchemist and a serial killer. Ed also must face his new boss, Lt. Col. Roy Mustang, an unsmiling officer who may instill some patience and discipline in the young prodigy. The Elric brothers gain a friend in investigative officer Major Maes Hughes, whose warm nature juxtaposes Mustang's icy demeanor. Although these episodes offer plenty of intense action and broad comedy, what distinguishes Fullmetal Alchemist from other adventure series is its emotional honesty. When Ed narrowly escapes a violent death, he tearfully confesses his fear and loneliness, and his awareness of his all-too-human limitations--an admission few animated or live action heroes would make. (Rated TV PG: violence, tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

    Description

    5 out of 5 stars I See Now What Everyone's Talking About.......2006-06-12

It took me a long time to find my way to Fullmetal Alchemist but eventually, after getting so many recommendations and reading all of the many, many reviews, I decided to take the chance on what I had thought appeared to be a childish series. Now, two volumes in, I have no regrets. FMA has proved to me with these four episodes that it has everything that makes an anime great, including a good story, lovable characters, fluid animation, with an emotional soundtrack backing all of this. This series certainly is shaping up to be everything that the critics say, and I can't wait to hurry on to the next volume in line.

First, however, the review for Fullmetal Alchemist: 2: Scarred Man of the East.

In volume one, the story begins with the Elric Brothers journeying to find the Philosopher's Stone, but soon after it takes a trip into the brother's dark past. This volume continues along in that thread, showing the history of how Edward and Alphonse became associated with the State Alchemists, and of Edward's first missions as a government appointed alchemist. After the explosive start to this series, I remained somewhat skeptical. Good starts for an anime never mean the anime will stay good (Tenjho Tenge and Desert Punk are two examples). But this volume was able to keep up with what the first volume presented. The story was still as dark as it was earlier, and the characters become even more lovable as we see just how strong-willed Edward is, and how kind-hearted the cursed Alphonse is.

To be completely honest, I'm in love with this series. Don't judge a book by its cover, as the cliche goes, and in this case it's definitely true. While not so mature as to scare away children, this series contains just enough maturity within the story to entertain adults. Plus, when it calls for comedy, FMA delivers in loads. I highly recommend this volume and this series to anyone who wants to see a good anime. From what I hear, this series has an amazing ending, but for now let's start with the amazing beginning.

Everything about it is a 10 the voice acting is some of the best I have ever heard. Standing O for them all the way! Perfect Dub cast. The animation leaves you speechless the whole show makes you feel every emotion known to man.

Fullmetal Alchemist reaches its appropriately wrenching conclusion, as Ed's and Al's powers and commitment to each other are put to the ultimate test. The fate of their world (and, possibly, this one) is at stake: If the Elrics fail, the Homunculi will continue their murderous deeds. But Fullmetal Alchemist isn't just a simple story of good versus evil, as revelations about the origins of Envy and the role of Hohenheim prove. The drama, the adventure, the comedy, and, above all, the loving relationship between Edward and Alphonse make it a truly noteworthy series in the history of anime, one whose influence is sure to be felt for years. At the end of volume 13, viewers may feel the same sort of emptiness an earlier generation of readers experienced when Sherlock Holmes went over Reisenbach Falls, although episode 51 sets up the feature, The Conqueror of Shamballa--which robs the ending of a little of its punch. But Hiromu Arakawa's original manga continues, and fans of the Elric Brothers will enjoy The Art of Fullmetal Alchemist: The Anime, a collection of illustrations by artists who worked on the series, including a nicely incongruous painting of the cast in traditional Japanese costume. 5 out of 5 stars A touching and enticing end to the series........2007-03-19

These three concluding episodes of the Fullmetal Alchemist series capture the engrossing nature of the anime in a final series of twists and surpises that leaves the FMA fan both satisfied and anticipating at the same time. While I wasn't quite as satisfied with with the Fullmetal Alchemist movie, which continues the story where the series intentionally leaves things hanging, this end to the series is enough to leave me with a good feeling about the anime in general, and I wouldn't have minded if it was the end. The problems and goals of the entire series are addressed in unexpected ways, as the love of two brothers leads to the ultimate sacrifice of each one for the other. It also completes the character arc for Ed, as he has learned what is most important in the world, and what he has to do now that he knows that.

The DVD was well worth purchasing, both for the great episodes themselves as well as the special features (including some neat interviews and commentary with the English directors and voice actors, and the music-video like opening and closing songs that can be played on their own).

As the popular fantasy-adventure Fullmetal Alchemist continues, Edward Elrich uses his wits, as well as his professional skills, to give a corrupt military officer a well-deserved comeuppance. Based on the story "The Mining Town" in the first collection of Hiromu Arakawa's original manga, this adventure proves that "Be Thou for the People" isn't just a motto for the Elrich Brothers. The citizens of the played-out gold rush town of Xenotime refuse to accept Edward and Alphonse for who they are because two strangers have assumed their identities. Both pairs of brothers learn and teach valuable lessons as they defeat a murderous land baron who's after the Philosopher's Stone. Every episode of this winning series delivers what the viewers want: adventure, magic, slapstick, and Edward's inevitable rants about his diminutive stature. But Fullmetal Alchemist also delivers something that's become rare in American and Japanese animation: heart. (Rated TV PG: violence, minor risqué humor, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars Back to the Future.......2006-06-12

With all the major elements of the Elric Brother's past explored, this volume goes back to where it left off in the first couple episode of the Fullmetal Alchemist series. The brothers are searching once again for the Philosopher's Stone, this time following clues that lead them into troublesome situations. After the first episode on this DVD, which is the last of the "past" episodes, the brothers find themselves in a city hunting a thief that advertises her crimes. After that, the brothers face a second pair of Elric brothers who are refining magical stones from red water in the hopes to duplicate the effect of the Philosopher's Stone.

Yes, I will say that the story slowed somewhat in this, but that had to have been expected considering the fast-paced beginning of this series. In fact, looking back, I think the slower pace was somewhat welcome. It allowed for the series to lighten up a little and give the viewers a chance to take a breather and just enjoy the goings-on of the Elric Brothers. Besides, it still has the excellent animation and music to back up the slowing plot. And though it slowed, I'm fairly sure that it will pick up sooner or later (my guess would be sooner, since I've already taken a peek at volume four).

I'm startled myself by how hooked I now am by this series. The first volume didn't catch my attention the way it probably should have, mainly do to my own skepticism. But now that I've given FMA the chance it deserves, I'm loving every second I spend watching this series, and I feel confident saying that FMA is definitely one of the better anime out at this point in time.

5 out of 5 stars red water, miners, and.... food poisoning?.......2005-11-28

yeah, that's right, in the episode "The Phantom Theif", Ed gets food poisoning, which leads to some very funny dialogue (I'll turn you all into fish). These are, given, not the most mind blowing episodes of Full Metal Alchemist, but even if they scream filler episodes on the outside, they aren't, really. The first episode on this disc, "Be Thou for The People" introduces Lyra and Yoki, who, in turn, are essential characters in the series. "The Phantom Theif", the second episode, is very light hearted and VERY funny, even if it's not very important to the story. The only important line in this episode was "go to the city of Xenotime." In the last two episodes on the disc, "the Other brothers Elric, pt.1-2", Ed and Al do go to Xenotime and there they learn some important factors on the creation of the Philosopher's stone, and gain a new friend and rival. These episodes great, even though the outer exterior of them doesn't show us so.

Many series falter and grow repetitious after the first season; Fullmetal Alchemist only gets better. As the saga of the Elric Brothers unfolds, director Seiji Mizushima deftly blends powerful emotional drama, physical action, and broad comedy. With his gang of chimeras, Greed kidnaps Alphonse. In the ensuing battle, what Ed had learned about the origins of the Homunculi is confirmed. But he discovers that the non-humans have weaknesses and can be destroyed with the right equipment and sufficient willpower. In a curious series of conversations and flashbacks, the viewer learns that even Lust is haunted by doubts and questions. Ishbal remains the center of the mystery of the Philosopher's Stone, and the tragedy of its destruction may not have been what it seemed. The Elric Brothers, the State Military, and the Homunculi are all drawn to the fallen city, but are they acting on their own volition or are they pawns in a greater game? (Rated TV PG: violence, grotesque imagery, tobacco and alcohol use) --Charles Solomon

Fullmetal Alchemist is one of the best anime series out there. A must watch.

5 out of 5 stars GREED WANTS TO LIVE FOREVER.......2006-05-23

As the ninth excellent volume of Fullmetal Alchemist opens Edward is defeated by the loner Homunculus Greed to distract him from his real goal: keeping him out of the way while Greed's henchmen, superpowered chimera, kidnap Al. Greed wants to know how Al was binded to the suit of armor because he believes it holds the key to immortality. It's up to Ed to find and rescue his brother, but he might get some help from his old teacher (she's not "old"), Izumi, if her body can stand using alchemy. The military is also deadset on capturing Greed, and they're willing to kill anyone who gets in their way, be they guilty or innocent, and also our two favorite State Alchemists! The third episode is a departure because it features Lust as the main character and shows a little about her past, or at least that she once had a heart, as she meets up with a human who is in love with her! In Episode 36, Ed, Al, and Winry continue their journey to Ishbal. The two brothers have heard the rumor that the Ishbalans had made their own version of a Philosopher's Stone, but they're also going to find Scar, and see what he knows about the subject.

Volume 9 is probably one of the best installments in this series, and also among all anime dvds. It is brillantly written and animated. What really makes compelling drama of any kind is for the characters to have shadings of good and evil, if such opposites really exist. The fact that Greed is a Homunculus doesn't take away from the fact that he is a likeable guy, and he isn't like Envy or Gluttony. He doesn't kill people indiscriminately and seems loyal to his henchmen and you regret that he's so arrogant that he forces a battle with Ed. All the characters here are strong, or weak, just like real people, and react to tragedies with the appropriate emotion. Some revelations towards the end of the disk send Winry especially on a collision course with her own ideals and revenge, which will be especially interesting. Excellent dvd!

I would also recommend the manga version Fullmetal Alchemist. Animes you might also like would be Scrapped Princess, The Twelve Kingdoms, and Inuyasha.

5 out of 5 stars Pain, Lust, And Even More Pain.......2006-02-23

This time around Al has been kidnapped and taken to the nappers secret location but of course Al is nowhere near fear. Seriously you'll be proud of the little I'm sorry I mean big guys tolerance for hateful kidnappers. Ed is going crazy trying to find his brother and has little patience for anything but the search. Major Armstrong is at war with Greed's men deep in the slimy sewers trying to save Al, while up above Ed escapes the military for a showdown with Greed. Greed to me is a great villain to give Ed such a hard time in battle but from this he gave Ed something more valuable than anything in his journey as he is shown the way to defeat the homunculus. Trust me Greed fights to the last drop of sweat, blood, and almost impenetrable armor. This is one of the most amazing battles ever in the Fullmetal Alchemist series. Who will win this deadly fight to the death? Vol.9 contains episodes 33-36, 33/Al, Captured 34/ Theory of Avarice, 35/Reunion of the Fallen, 36/The Sinner Within.
