Take two male figure skaters, throw in a preposterous storyline, and you've got Blades of Glory, a surprisingly funny film that almost makes you forgive Will Ferrell for his back-to-back 2005 clunkers Kicking & Screaming and Bewitched. This time around, Ferrell eats the scenery in his role as a sex-addicted, cocky skating champ named Chazz Michael Michaels. When he gets into an on-podium fight with his nemesis and co-gold medallist Jimmy MacElroy (Jon Heder, Napoleon Dynamite), both skaters are banned from competing in men's figure-skating events. Forever. Their fall from grace is brutal. Chazz is forced to work for a D-list skating show, while pampered Jimmy is disowned by his wealthy and cold-hearted adoptive father (excellently played by William Fichtner), who only wants to be around winners. When Jimmy points out that he tied for gold, his dad cruelly says, "If I wanted to share, I would've bought you a brother." Flash forward 3-1/2 years and Jimmy's No. 1 stalker Hector (Nick Swardson) says he's found a loophole. Jimmy's been banned from men's singles events, but there's nothing that says he can't compete in pairs skating. After a chance meeting with Chazz, mayhem ensues as the two rivals team up to go against the brother-and-sister team of Stranz and Fairchild Van Waldenberg (played by Will Arnett and his real-life wife, Amy Poehler of Saturday Night Live and Mean Girls fame). The Van Waldenbergs will stop at nothing to beat the competition, even if that means literally beating up the competition. They have no qualms manipulating their sweet little sister (Jenna Fischer, The Office) to seduce both men to try to break up the team.

The finale will be no surprise to moviegoers who know that comedies like this aren't set up to make its leading men losers. But there is one brief skating sequence set in North Korea that will surprise (and shock) many viewers because of its brutality. Ferrell and Heder make a great comedy team. Though he has been accused of playing the same role since his breakthrough performance in Napoleon Dynamite and, to a certain extent, plays a similar type of role here, Heder is spot-on as Jimmy. He manages to convey innocence, bitterness, and longing--all within the span of a few seconds and while wearing a peacock unitard (You can understand why Hector is so enthralled with him). Look for guest appearances by real-life skating champs Scott Hamilton, Brian Boitano, Peggy Fleming, Dorothy Hamill, Nancy Kerrigan, and Sasha Cohen, who gets to sniff Chazz's jockstrap. --Jae-Ha Kim

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Will Ferrell gets all the laughs in this one. Great picture quality by hd standards/hd dvd features below........2007-09-14

As I said above pretty much all the laughs provided in Blades of Glory are provided by Will Ferrell who is becoming as bankable a box office draw as Adam Sandler. With Last years Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby taking in $148,213,377 domestically and Blades another $118,245,842. The latter film Talladega Nights provided much more effective laughs specifially the grace scene then Blades where a lot of the jokes fell flat and Jon Heder basically doing his Napoleon Dynamite impression once again. However there are plenty of laughs from Ferrell's character Chazz Michael Michaels an erotic figure skater who also suffers from a sexual addiction. The film is entertainment and the 93min run time doesn't drag on.

I would recommend if you have a netflix membership renting this one or waiting for cable and saving yourself the money, perhaps purchasing a cheaper version than the hd. Speaking of the hd the transfer did look great even compared to a lot of hd titles.

1 out of 5 stars Saw it at a friends house, picture quality is poor, audio is worse.......2007-09-02

For a next gen release this film is lacking.

----- Video -----
This movie was not encoded in the superior VC-1 video format, instead it uses MPEG-4. Comparing this movie to recent greats such as 300 that is encoded in VC-1, there is just no comparison. Why on earth did they go with MPEG-4?

Score: 1/10

----- Audio -----
Don't expect great audio from this title. The best you can get is Dolby Digital Plus 5.1, it's great for entry level consumers perhaps watching this title on an XBOX 360 add-on, but will not satisfy midrange to high-end equipment owners. The lack of Uncompressed Lossless PCM audio tracks and support for up to 7.1 channels was a real let down.

Score: 1/10

----- The film -----
While this film was funny and not the worst Will Ferrell movie I've seen, it was not nearly as funny as Talladega Nights. It sort of played on homophobia all throughout the movie, which was funny to begin with but quickly got old.

Score: 2/10

----- Summary ------
Video - No VC-1
Audio - No Dolby TrueHD or PCM, no 7.1 support
Film - Funny at first, but beats a dead horse

----- Conclusion -----
Really only recommended to the entry level crowd, the video and audio are not up to par of a next gen release. If you enjoy this genre and are using entry level equipment the go for it. Otherwise forego this title.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT COMEDY in HI-DEF GLORY!!!.......2007-08-31

This film is a riot!

Chazz Michaels was a kid from the streets who always ice-skated. Nobody ever trained him. He is a sexy macho beast on ice (laughs) who usually ends his presentations with fire. His greatest nemesis is Jimmy MacElroy, a wonder kid who was adopted by a millionaire and trained into becoming an olympic hero.

After both of them get banned for a HILARIOUS fight on the podium, they spend some horrible time trying to find a new life away from the thing they truly love: ice-skating. Suddenly, they decide they can still go back to business... but only as a couple. And that will not be easy because not only they have to learn to get along... but also they must beat the Waldenbergs - the perfid couple who want to preserve their "ice-skating darlings" status.

Aside from all that, this film gives us a HILARIOUS look at the corny side of ice-skating. It is a exaggeration, of course, but it is so funny you'll never look at ice-skating without remembering this film.

My two favorite moments:
a) when we see a recording of the Golden Lotus: a routine so dangerous it decapitated one skater. (i know it sounds horrible, but believe me: you'll be laughing like mad!!!)
b) the Waldenbergs' dreadful presentation as JFK saving Marylin Monroe from suicide. Her spewing the pills during a "ice-skating" Heimlich maneuver is hilarious.

Watch this film. It is guaranteed laughter.

This film is available in three editions:
DVD Widescreen
DVD full screen
HD DVD for those lucky ones who have a HD DVD player (in fact, this film inaugurates Paramount's exclusive support of HD DVD).

4 out of 5 stars Blades of Glory HD-DVD no Dolby TrueHD.......2007-08-31

I rented this movie in HD-DVD because reviews here said it was a Dolby TrueHD title, but there was no Dolby TrueHD audio selection available, only Dolby Digital Plus 5.1.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Comedy Destined To Become A Classic!.......2007-08-29

If you haven't seen this movie and love or even like comedy...then this movie is for you. I cried in laughter while watching this movie at the theater. I am definitely looking forward to seeing this movie in HD. As far as the snub towards Blu Ray with all Paramount movies, all I can say is business is business. Paramount had a choice to make their movies for both hd formats, however they decided not to. Hopefully those who own Blu Ray players don't hold a grudge towards the hd dvd format. Both hd formats have their own advantages and disadvantages, however these reviews should really just focus on the quality of the movie that was released. I give it two thumbs up!

You wouldn't think a movie that uses the game of golf as a metaphor for class struggle could be so entertaining. The Greatest Game Ever Played stars the charming Shia LaBeouf (Holes) as Francis Ouimet, a golfer who, in 1913, rose from caddy to U.S. Open champion at the age of 20--despite the resistance of the powers that be, who thought it unseemly for a lower-class plebian to play the sport of gentlemen. Ouimet's main competitor is Harry Vardon (Stephen Dillane, The Hours), a British professional, still considered one of the greatest players of all time, who fought his own class battles. The two go head to head in a genuinely gripping match, deftly balanced against the juxtapositions of their personal struggles. Is it sentimental and formulaic? Is the outcome a foregone conclusion? Yes, but it doesn't matter--formulas exist because, when executed with verve and dexterity, they work. Bill Paxton, best known as an actor (One False Move, Apollo 13), steps into the director's chair and hits all the right notes, aided by an excellent cast playing colorful characters, a vivid recreation of the time period, glowing cinematography, and an expert pace. The Greatest Game Ever Played works. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars Good family film.......2007-09-06

Good family film with lessons for parents and children to pursue their dreams but remember reality.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome movie.......2007-08-30

It was a great movie, if your friend, spouse, boyfriend ,or girlfriend enjoys golf this is a great gift. I gave it to
my husband as a surpirse and he was thrilled. It was very entertaining and interesting and well done.

4 out of 5 stars Forgotten story of how it all began..........2007-08-17

This is an inspirational true story that sports fans, especially golf fans should see. It has been quoted as the first "underdog success story in American sports".

If you are interested in the movie, I strongly urge you to read Mark Frost's book by the same name. The book has much more details and spends a great deal of time explaining the historical context and the birth of modern golf. I found the movie disappointing after reading the book, but that is to be expected since the movie must omit many details (the book is 475 pages).

Without having read the book, I would have definitely missed some of the details of the movie such as Vardon's wrist twitching. Furthermore, I am a bit confused as to why Vardon doesn't have a mustache in this movie when he did in real life? There are some innacuracies between the movie and the book such as the scores of the final round. It is also a shame that Walter Hagen is completely absent from the movie, since he plays an important part in the book and is an instrumental player in the birth of golf in America.

All in all, this is a truly memorable story and the movie is entertaining. Those who seek to dig a little deeper and to make sure they get the facts straight should also read the book.

4 out of 5 stars The Greatest Game Ever Played.......2007-08-05

This movie is a little heavy handed on the social-economic class issues. At times the story drags because of this. However, the casting is solid, and the cinematography is lovely. Best of all is the real life story of Francis Ouimet. Inspite of knowing almost nothing about golf, this movie has inspired me to research the real person. The Greatest Game Ever Played: A True Story The Bonus feature showing the interview with the real Mr. Ouimet is a definite plus.

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat Boring Family Movie.......2007-06-26

The Greatest Game Ever Played is a decent family movie that is extremely predictable and has a feel good ending. It had a good history of the U.S. Open and being a golf fan I learned some things about the sport's history.

I was bothered by the fact that I could constantly predict what would happen and was waiting for that warm fuzzy feeling that I received in a similar genre like Remember The Titans or A league of Their Own. It was not what I would consider a sports classic but I am sure that kids will enjoy watching the young man beat up on the older folks in the tournament. The story has the usual theme of one parent not believing in the child while the other is a great supporter until the end. The acting just wasn't believable.

I wouldn't highly recommend the movie but I guess if there is nothing else to watch then it is a decent choice

Something the Lord Made recounts the relationship between Dr. Alfred Blalock (Alan Rickman) and Vivian Thomas (Mos Def). It begins in 1930s Nashville when imperious cardiac surgeon Blalock hires Thomas, an African American carpenter, as his janitor. When the latter reveals a passion for medicine and facility with surgical instruments, Blalock promotes him to lab tech. Thomas isn't given a raise, works side jobs to make ends meet, and is expected to be grateful. Along the way, he follows Blalock from Vanderbilt to Johns Hopkins, where they save thousands of lives through their pioneering work, but will Thomas ever get any credit? The film provides a satisfying answer to that question. Joseph Sargent (A Lesson Before Dying) directs with subtlety and intelligence, while Rickman and Mos Def are in top form, often underplaying where most actors would do otherwise. Something the Lord Made won the 2004 Emmy for outstanding made-for-TV movie. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

(Drama) Something the Lord Made tells the emotional true story of two men who defied the rules of their time to launch a medical revolution, set against the backdrop of the Jim Crow south. Working in 1940s Baltimore on an unprecedented technique for performing heart surgery on "blue babies," Dr. Alfred Blalock (Alan Rickman) and lab technician Vivien Thomas (Mos Def) form an impressive team. As Blalock and Thomas invent a new field of medicine, saving thousands of lives in the process, social pressures threaten to undermine their collaboration and tear their friendship apart.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Love this Movie.......2007-09-13

This movie did not receive the credit it was due. Mos Def was wonderful... too bad he didn't get the award; he certainly deserved it.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for this beautiful movie.......2007-08-15

This is an amazing movie from HBO films. If you have seen the Life and Death of Peter Sellers you know what I mean. My favorite actor Alan Rickman and Mos Def play the main characters in this civil rights era medical drama. It is based on the true history of Dr. Alfred Blaylock and his assistant Vivian Thomas, and their research on Tetralogy of Fallot. Cardiac surgery before the 1930's was considered impossible, so their contributions made vast improvements for medicine and countless lives. Their relationship is a contrast of violatility and intimacy. Social constraints influence them, and yet they treat each other as equals. The acting is infallible and touching, this is a must-see movie. I own it, I love it, enough can't be said about it. (it is NR but I would give an R, not for children)

5 out of 5 stars MOS DEF IS A GREAT ACTOR.......2007-08-14

I orginally saw this movie on HBO. I had no idea Mos Def could act, but he sure can. From beginning to end the movie is gripping and at the end you feel a sense of pride. This is defintiely one I will watch over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Well Acted Docu-Drama.......2007-08-01

I purchased this title as a gift for a retired heart surgeon. He practically makes everyone (including me) who darkens his door watch it with him. It is a great, well acted film about the taboo interracial pairing of a surgeon and his brilliant assistant at Johns Hopkins Hospital in a very segregated Baltimore. This film documents the first open heart surgery on "blue babies" which was performed by this unlikely pair. Even the coldest heart will be melted by this wonderful story.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent movie!.......2007-07-03

This movie is a must see. It will keep your interest throughout. There are no dull moments. I didn't realize that Mos Def is such a wonderful actor.

Product Description

When the coach of Vince Papale's beloved hometown football team hosted an unprecedented open tryout, the public consensus was that it was a waste of time--no one good enough to play professional football was going to be found this way. Certainly no one like Papale--a down-on-his-luck, 30 year-old, substitute teacher and part-time bartender who never even played college football. But against these odds, Papale made the team and soon found himself living every fan's fantasy--moving from his cheap seats in the upper deck to standing on the field as a professional football player.

Amazon.com

Walt Disney Pictures scored a surprise box-office hit with Invincible, and the movie deserved its good reviews as a fine example of how above-average writing, direction, and casting can turn formulaic material into something special. And make no mistake, this is a formulaic movie, with its real-life story embellished with Rocky-like enthusiasm, and lovingly crafted with the same quality of working-class humanism that made The Rookie a similarly popular Disney hit. This time, the inspirational true story is that of Vince Papale, a down-on-his-luck substitute teacher in Philadelphia (played by Mark Wahlberg in a nicely understated performance) who was 30 years old, out of work, abandoned by his wife, and biding time as a bartender when he answered an open call for tryouts on the Philadelphia Eagles NFL football team in 1976. Going with his gut instinct, new coach Dick Vermeil (Greg Kinnear) rewards Papale's diligent efforts with a place on the team, and Invincible combines gridiron guts, low-key romance (as Papale meets his future wife-to-be, played by Elizabeth Banks) and blue-collar friendship in an underdog story that moves, with casual charm and abundant appeal, toward a rousing feel-good finish. Making good use of digital visual effects to recreate Philly's now-demolished Veterans Stadium, director Erickson Core (also serving as his own cinematographer) tackles this heartwarming assignment with intelligence and flair, spinning gold from what could have been just another routine sports movie. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Invincible.......2007-08-26

A beautiful story about determination and success against all odds. I've shown this film to addicts and alcoholics seeking recovery and the reaction was totally positive.

5 out of 5 stars An entertaining portrayal of a true football story.......2007-08-06

Mark Wahlberg does an excellent job of making the story seem true-to-life. I would recommend this move to anyone who likes an 'underdog' story; not just football fans. Of course there's a little bit of romance thrown in for the ladies as well.

3 out of 5 stars was not what I thought it would be.......2007-08-05

We own alot of the great football movies. Friday Night Lights, Remember the Tiatans and I would even through Radio in there. This is why I purchased this movie. First of all some what slow movie didn't really keep my intrest. Second of all I would say really bad acting. Nothing was really belivable. I think I would just wait for this to come out on tv

5 out of 5 stars Wahlberg gives a great performance in this movie.......2007-07-31

Very endearing movie that is about a man who is kind of "off the street" who makes the Eagles team in open tryouts. He goes from becoming a 30 year old bartender to Professional football player and it is a true story that has a lot of heart and emotion to it. Kinnear is also in the movie he plays coach Dick Vermeil. The movie is a great film for the family and is a story about triumph and chance and love of the game so to speak. It does not matter if you like football or the Eagles team it matters that you understand the message. Sometimes a movie like this fails but I think this one is a keeper and shows how dreams do come true even if they seem totally impossible. Mark is great as Vince and it shows the opportunity that is presented to him that he ultimately turns into a dream come true.

5 out of 5 stars Rocky in the NFL.......2007-07-11

In 1975 the Philadelphia Eagles NFL football team was on a 14-year losing streak. They had no heart and they had disappointed a city that needed them. Then a down-on-his-luck 30 year old out of work substitute teacher in Philadelphia, played by Mark Wahlberg, is abandoned by his wife, and biding time as a part-time bartender when he answered an open call for tryouts on the Philadelphia Eagles NFL football team in 1976.

This open call was an act of desperation by a new coach and is what this film is about. This inspirational true story is that of Vince Papale who gave his heart and soul to the team and brought them back to life. He will never be forgotten in Philly, he may not be in the record books, but every Eagles football fan knows him. Vince Papale was making all this happen at the same time the fictional movie "Rocky" was released...so the fans of the Eagles saw that dreams do come true. A lesson we should all remember. I recommend this film for the whole family.

5 out of 5 stars Loved the DVD Set.......2007-08-21

I have all 3 dvds when they came out. I loved the DVD set. The format was cool. You can watch just Underdog or watch the 2 parter with everthing in between. Lots of times I didn't care what was in betweeen the episodes. I just wanted Underdog! I did like extra storyboard on DVD 3 "The Nug of Nog". It was cute. I buy the dvd's for Underdog nothing else.

4 out of 5 stars Episodes Review...Perils of Sweet Polly..........2007-08-14

I like how Underdog is a mix of education with absurdity, you can really learn a lot from these cartoons. When I was in Kindergarten I used to stay up all night just to watch Underdog at about 5 or 6 a.m. in the morning. Then I'd sleep for my school day, once I fell asleep on the bus since I was so tired... I woke up hours later, all these older kids were around me, heh what bus driver don't check to make sure every kid left their vehicle :)? I hope this qualifies my reviews to help others decide if these sets are worth buying or not. I admit I'm upset they are milking Underdog for every dollar they can, why can't they just release a complete set or the seasons/episodes in order. At least this installment didn't cut and hack up things like the earlier releases did, though there are still flaws as many have mentioned. The advertisements for other products were annoying and not needed...

Feature Episodes...
The Big Dipper... Simon decides to create a machine to dry up all the water in the world. At first it freezes water solid, next it boils water turning it into steam. There is so much smoke the firemen come to the house to douse what they think to be flames. Simon sends them away, Polly suspects he is up to no good and stays behind. With the atomizer adjusted Simon tries again, this time it makes more water creating a flood. During all this Underdog was fighting a pack of killer whales who were terrorizing the swimmers. Finally Simon gets his machine working right and he can suck up all the water in the world to place into small glass jars. (End Part 1)

Go Go Gophers "Blankety-Blank Blanket" The Gopher Indians just want a new blanket for the winter. Things escalate into snowball warfare...
Tooter Turtle "News Nuisance or (Sub Scribe)" Tooter wants to be a reporter, Peter Parker he isn't hehe... I think the ending of this gets cut off as stated by another reviewer...

Part 2... Simon tests how much water he can shrink to fit into small jars, he does a pool, pond, lake, and then all the reservoirs of water in the world. Underdog is still fighting a pack of killer whales until Simon dries up the water he is in. Underdog tries to fence in all the water left in the world so Simon can't get to it... Unfortunately this don't stop Simon and The Atlantic is the only Ocean left, can Underdog Stop Simon? Part 3 (Theme etc...) Simon says all must be his slave or they wont get any water. If you are rich you can buy it at 1 thousand a glass, if you can't afford that you have to do labor for him. He shows he can reverse the process and put the water back... Underdog is stuck in the MUD of what was once the Atlantic Ocean, the people's thirst grows and Simon drinks water to taunt them. We all do what Simon says or would you rather die of thirst... He makes the people call him master and follow his bidding. How can Underdog stop him now?? (End Part 3)

Tennessee Tuxedo "Wish Wash" The Penguin and his pal start a laundry business but keep causing conflict hehe.
Commander McBragg "Indianapolis Speedway" He tells how he won the Indy 500 with a pumped up story hehe...

Part 4... Underdog drops his super energy pill and gets out of the muck. Simon threatens to destroy what he has obtained unless Underdog does what he says too... Will Underdog be able to save Lake Michigan and the rest of the stolen water? Good educational stuff in this, many names of lakes that kids should know, other informative things as usual in the Tennessee Tuxedo episode as well...

The Gold Bricks... A billion dollars in gold bricks is to be delivered to the National bank but who can be trusted with this job. Underdog is to drive the armored car, there is even a ceremony where people cheer him on. Riff Raff plans to steal the bricks by switching trucks, how will they manage that hehe... When Underdog arrives at the National bank the truck is empty, so they arrest him. How will he prove he is innocent? (End Part 1)

Klondike Kat "Gravy Train" Klondike has to get the finest Roast Beef to Fort Frazzle...
The Hunter "Brookloined Bridge" The Fox Steals the Brooklyn Bridge and The Hunter has to get it back...

Part 2... The Papers run with the story of Underdog in jail for stealing gold... Sad all that good he did, they turn on him fast, Polly refuses to report the news about Underdog... She asks for 24 hours to clear Underdog's name... Riff Raff plans to paint the gold bricks red and bring them over the border as if they were normal bricks hehe... The catch is he plans to paint them in a haunted house, Polly flies around in a helicopter looking for the missing armored car. They find Underdog guilty and say he disgraced all the heroes in the world and gave him 30 years. How will he ever prove he is innocent rotting in jail?? Part 3 (theme etc)... Polly finds the haunted house, she gets scared by ghostly laughter. A ghost offers to help show Polly where the gold is, can he be trusted? Can Underdog save her even if she calls out to him?

The King & Odie "Sticky Stuff" Biggie Rat and Itchy Brother plot to build a new super weapon to defeat the King. continued in "Am I Glue" they plan to glue the king to the wall so he can't make an appearance than take over hehe... Interesting Prof Messer quote "Who knows perhaps they will be the first to see the moon..."

Part 4... Jailbreak Underdog style, he tells the guard he will be back haha... Jailbreak and Riff Raff yet no AC/DC music, Polly is falling in a hole so deep she will fall for days... Will Underdog be able to save her, stop Riff Raff, and clear his name?

Bonus Episode: Fearo The Ferocious...
Polly's network needs ratings so they plan to put an exciting show on TV starring her and the most ferocious monster. Legend has it thousands of prehistoric beasts live on an island ruled by a giant ape called Fearo the Ferocious. Polly is sent there on a special ship with orders to capture him to bring back for the show, Shoeshine boy sneaks on the boat just to keep an eye on things. The Brave Captain turns out to be true to his word hehe... Godzilla mixed with a dragon attacks the boat and Underdog beats him without changing into costume hehe... The crew has a mutiny and wants to turn back and plans to make them walk the Plank... How will Underdog save the day without revealing his identity??

Go Go Gophers "Crash Diet" The Indians try to help the colonel lose 25 pounds in a week so he don't get discharged hehe...
Tooter Turtle "Rod and Reeling or (Field & Scream)" Tooter wants to be a fisherman and the wizard helps him out hehe...

Part 2... Shoeshine, Polly and the Captain were being forced to walk the plank... Underdog appears and saves Polly first while the captain has to wait longer haha... She asks where shoeshine is and he says he rushed him back across the sea, this is no place for a boy to be... Underdog put a hole in the deck, he says he is a hero that never fails, he can't be bothered with such details hahaha... He plugs the hole and encourages them to continue to the island hehe...Underdog battles a dinosaur and tires himself as Fearo arrives... How will an exhausted Underdog be able to face such a beast?? Part 3 (Theme)... Fearo tosses Underdog like a toy, he is no match in his weakened state... Underdog mutters ring and they finally figure out he means the ring on his finger... They help Underdog pop his pill and he saves Captain Coward from Fearo... Underdog stops Fearo like a broken down car, he binds him in chains and carries him home... Fearo stars in beauty and the beast chained up as Polly feeds Fearo from a huge dish... Fearo swallows the spoon, gets angry, breaks his chains and takes Polly prisoner while he terrorizes the city. Where is Underdog and how will he stop Fearo without hurting Polly?

Tennessee Tuxedo "Parachuting Pickle" The Penguin and his Pal have to skydive into Lost Valley to recover a Gangsta's money.
Commander McBragg "Football by Hex" The commander tells how he had a ball playing football at his old school.

Part 4... Riff Raff has shoeshine doing his shoes while Polly is singing for Underdog... Riff Raff wont let him leave until he shines his shoes to perfection... How will Underdog be able to slip away to save Sweet Polly and the city from Fearo??

DVD Extras: You get a short very informative interview where you learn Polly was based on Marilyn Monroe, Riff Raff on George Raft, and Simon Barsinister was influenced by Lionel Barrymore's voice. Also included is an option where you can play the missing theme songs for Tennessee Tuxedo, Go Go Gophers, Commander McBragg, Klondike Kat, and the rest of the Underdog shorts represented by episodes on this DVD. I like how you are able to play the episodes in the original way, with just the shorts, and with just Underdog. At least there was some effort to make everybody happy even if things did not come out perfect.

Blazed Bits: I am annoyed how they are dragging and milking Underdog for every dollar they can. When you edit this material you lose more money than you will ever make. The people who buy this stuff mostly grew up loving Underdog. Kids today are not going to put up with the old style of animation and the flaws that are evident in the transfer. I know this is from the 60's so you have to expect a fair degree when it comes to issues with the picture. Volumes 1 and 3 of the set seem better than Volume 2 when it comes to that problem though. You can expect about another 3-6 releases at this rate, depending if they redo the original releases where the episodes were all hacked up. Currently you have about 14 episodes which include Phoney Booths, Batty Man, A New Villain, Simon Says "Be My Valentine", Just in Case, Simon Says "No Thanksgiving", Whistler's Father, The Forget-Me-Net, The Flying Sorcerers, The Moleman, Pain Strikes Underdog, The Magnet Men, Go Snow, and The Bubbleheads not currently on DVD. I'll list to my knowledge what episodes have been released on DVD past and present for Underdog. Most Underdog stories were 4 parts, hence you really only get 3 episodes not 6 as they claim. As a 3 DVD set this works a lot better than stand alone products, especially the way the DVD extras are broken up.

Ultimate Underdog Collection...
Volume 2 (Simon Says Melt) - The Great Gold Robbery, The Big Shrink, The Marbleheads
Volume 3 (Riff Raff's Greatest Hits) - Weathering the Storm, RiffRaffVille, Round and Round

Past Underdog DVD Releases...
Underdog Chronicles - The Ticklefeather Machine, Guerrilla Warfare, Zot
Underdog Nemesis - The Wicked Witch of Pickyoon, The Silver Thieves
Underdog Collectors Edition- Vacuum Gun, From Hopeless to Helpless, Underdog vs. Overcat
Bonus Shorts:Safe Waif (Pilot), Tricky Trap Zap (sequel to Hopeless to Helpless), Simon Says (First Appearance of Simon), March of the Monsters

Until a better set comes along the Ultimate Underdog Collection seems the best option on DVD currently.

2 out of 5 stars Another disappointing effort on behalf of Underdog & his friends.......2007-08-11

Thanks to Classic Media for publishing these additional episodes, but I wish they'd someday put some actual effort into a collection worthy of Underdog, his friends, and fans.

Pros: the DVD menu is exceptionally-well organized, allowing the user to watch whole shows, Underdog-only episodes, or the accompanying shorts, with each cartoon having its own chapter index. (Though there isn't a way to watch ALL the content, including the "bonus" episode, without interacting with the DVD.) The return of the "cliffhanger" format for the shows is a plus.

Cons: The "bonus features" are rehashed, the same as included on the Nemesis/Chronicles/Collectors DVD set; some of the cartoons don't appear to have been retouched much (digitally remastered?), having faded colors; MANY of the cartoons have audio issues, from distortion, to digital whistles or twitters.

I'm grateful for the content, but am very disappointed at yet another sub-standard Underdog video release. He deserves better.

4 out of 5 stars Great show, but the dvd could use some tweaking.......2007-08-07

I'm no real expert on the show, like the other reviewers. So I'll giving a little review on the dvd

First off, I like the fact that they allow you to choose how you want to view the episodes. You can see the entire episode in the classic formula but, if you're just an underdog fan. You can choose to see all four parts in a row, or you can see the other cartoons in a row.

On the subject of episode, I feel there just aren't enough. You get four main episodes, plus a bonus episode. I cant help but think I am getting slightly ripped off, because I see dvds like Teenage mutant ninja turtles that have 13 episodes per disc. Not to mention they cost around the same price as the underdog dvds.

As for the extras, I'm pretty much pleased with them. Underdog is a pretty old show, so you really can't expect much for extras. The histroy of the show told by the creator was great, I also loved seeing a comic he drew for two girls(seen on disc three) brought to life.

I'm giving this a 4 out of 5, because overall I loved the dvds. However I feel they should add at most seven to ten episodes per disc in future releases. Ten dollars is a bit much to ask for five episodes when other dvds sets of classic cartoons contain twice as many for the same price.

5 out of 5 stars accept no imitations.......2007-08-04

While I do share the frustration of you purists out there --- it would be ideal to have these classics uncut and complete --- I'm giving this DVD (and the others in the series) 5 stars. Even with any cuts that may have been made, this DVD set still retains the charm and humor of my childhood hero. I cant seem to find Underdog on any of the cartoon networks, merchandise & collectables are sadly too limited, and it's scary to think that the only exposure to Underdog for today's youngsters is the hella-lame Disney live-action movie. I'd much rather settle for a few trims here & there with this DVD set than accept a pale imitation being the only canine crusader out there saving the world.

Jump roping that's worlds away from anything seen on the local playground bursts from the screen in this Disney Original Movie about the clash between two athletes and their respective sports. Boxer Izzy Daniels (Corbin Bleu) has a hard time taking neighbor Mary's (Keke Palmer) devotion to jump roping seriously, but as Izzy trains relentlessly to maintain his undefeated status and win the Golden Glove, Mary's team practices just as intensely for the city Double Dutch finals. Izzy gains a reluctant respect for Mary's sport when he accompanies his sister Karin (Kylee Russell) to a competition, but it takes some serious convincing to persuade him to fill in for a teammate who's abandon the team on the cusp of city finals. Izzy quickly discovers that Double Dutch is more demanding and rewarding than he'd ever imagined, but when the entire school finds out about his newest sporting exploit, he's taunted into quitting. As Izzy tries to regain his boxing focus, he suddenly realizes that winning the Golden Glove is more his father's (David Reivers) dream than his own. After some serious soul-searching, Izzy decides that he can't let what others think keep him from doing what makes him happy. This action-packed Disney Channel Original Movie takes a unique look at the varied world of sports and features some great catchy new music from Corbin Bleu and Jordan Pruitt, but the game-winner is its focus on the importance of following one's heart. (Ages 5 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars Fast Food for the Soul.......2007-06-01

This DVD was a gift for my wife, who is one of the "Jump In" fans in this house. I don't have quite the enthusiasm for this movie that they do, which leads me to believe that it is something of a "chick flick."

A tight plot, engaging characters, and quick pace put this show several notches above "viewable."

I enjoyed the story of a boy learning how to deal with conflicting demands and responsibilities.

The jump-rope contest choreography is impressive, and helps make this DVD a good buy, although sports purists might question the fusion of jump-rope tricks and boxing in another scene.

Disney Studios seems to be re-discovering the bourgeois inhibitions that made it a global success, so those who require relevance, naughty words, and people with the self-control of an ADHD tomcat in their entertainment will be sorely disappointed in "Jump In." Aside from these deficiencies, this is a highly entertaining musical.

5 out of 5 stars I love this dvd .......2007-05-19

This dvd is awesome and the bonus stuff is just great .

5 out of 5 stars Another great family film starring Keke Palmer.......2007-05-17

I bought this because of child actor Keke Palmer appears in it and I was not disappointed. It's such a fun film with cute actors, lots of incredible double dutch scenes and a great tutorial offered in the special effects section. It's a must have!

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING.......2007-05-15

We are from South Africa, and the movie only came on our disney channel after we got the DVD, so my kids were pretty happ with themselves. It was a really nice movie, it was heartwarming, and i found it very touching. We even shed a few tears!!!My kids now want to do Double Dutch!!!

5 out of 5 stars fun family movie.......2007-05-12

This movie won't win any oscars, but it's great for what it is, a great family film. It's so hard to find movies that all of my children (ages 2-10) will sit down and watch and that WE feel good about them watching. This is one of those movies. Made in the same mold as High School Musical, I hope Disney continues to pump out these type of movies. They're slightly cheesy, but a refreshing change from many movies marketed today for kids.

MiSTies rejoice! Three of the brilliantly cracked minds behind the Peabody Award-winning comedy program Mystery Science Theater 3000 have reunited for The Film Crew, a DVD-only series that provides a similar skewering to some uproariously bad B-movies. Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy (the voice of MST3K's Tom Servo) and Bill Corbett (who replaced Trace Beaulieu as Crow T. Robot) are the Film Crew--three affable guys who've been hired by a jovial yet clueless billionaire to provide "commentary" for atrocious films. Of course, the Crew's "commentary" is more cutting than informative, and for the most part, the guys' jabs are as smart and pop culture-savvy as the ones on MST3K, and it certainly helps that their target, a miserable 1968 slice of sexploitation starring a youthful Rue (The Golden Girls) McClanahan, is nothing short of atrocious. Parents should probably note that the gags are a little more "adult" than the ones on MST3K, but for the most part, this is harmless-- if hilarious--stuff. The disc's sole extra is an amusing poem by Corbett which extolls the virtues of lunch in verse. --Paul Gaita

Charged with the task of giving all movies their own commentary tracks, the Film Crew valiantly steps forward to tackle the best of the worst, starting with Hollywood After Dark.Rue McClanahan (Golden Girls) stars in this drama from 1968 as a young actress attempting to make her Hollywood debut, who falls into the seedy underworld of stripping when she's exploited by her unsavory producers.

4 out of 5 stars So close... So close to MST3K, but not quite........2007-09-09

I enjoyed the Hollywood After Dark. It brought back several memories of the original Mystery Science Theater. And seeing Rue McClanahan from Golden Girls Fame, doing a strip-tease is got to be the most disturbing thing I have ever seen.
But I missed the visuals. The site gags in front of the screen is needed. The dis-embodied voices are funny... I kept seeing Mike and Crow and Tom in my minds eye.
I will be buying more of the Film Crew films. The movies are worth it.

    2 out of 5 stars Okay.......2007-09-07

I am a huge MST fan, and found both Film Crew movies rather disappointing. For one thing, they repeat many of the riffs from MST movies. And, the humor is much more sophomoric and occasionally, rather tasteless. Not to say I didn't laugh--I did--but they're rather uneven and not nearly the caliber of some of the better MSTs.

4 out of 5 stars Film Crew finds another bad movie........2007-09-04

Wow, I thought Killers from Space was the worse movie I've ever seen, but this one is much worse. Thanks to the Film Crew you should make it through this load of trash and laugh about it.

The Film Crew commentary, while not consistantly funny, had me rolling on the floor a few times, which made the DVD well worth the money.

    4 out of 5 stars MST3K...only more so.......2007-08-30

All in all, this would stand up as a fairly good episode of MST3k (and, really, thats not an unfair comparrison; what else will we compare it to, after all). having been freed from the network and censorship, the MST3K crew is able to rip into movies which, other wise, would not have been available to them.
The result is "Hollywood After Dark" a truly abominable little "strip indie" feauting everyone's somewhat favorite Golden Girl: Rue McCallahan....back when her hair had more gold and less grey (and, speaking of hair; I was more impressed with the lead actor's Pompadour than I was with his acting! I've been trying to grow one myself, after all).
The zingers are well timed and aimed and, more than once, I found myself laughing outloud at the on-screen antics. Its a fun little romp through a terrible movie and I'd heartilly recondmend it to anyone 18 and above.
    Great work guys!

The sensuous thrill of ballroom dancing collides with the hip-hop world of self-expression in Take the Lead. Antonio Banderas (Desperado, The Mask of Zorro) stars as Pierre Dulaine, a dance teacher who--perhaps to fill a void in his own life--decides to teach the foxtrot and the tango to a group of inner-city high school students who've been put in detention. The kids sullenly resist this intruder with his silly box-steps, but gradually succumb to the allure of passion channeled into physical grace. It's a lot of hooey, of course--the stories about the individual kids are shallow melodrama--but a movie like this isn't so much about plot as about dancing, and the dancing bewitches. The main problem of Take the Lead is that there isn't enough dancing; at least half of the personal struggle of the students could be jettisoned and happily be replaced by fifteen minutes of a sleek and sexy rhumba. Still, Banderas has a warm, ingratiating presence and can spout platitudes about dance with conviction; Alfre Woodard (Crooklyn, Desperate Housewives) has her usual charismatic authority as the school's hard-nosed principal; and the dance competition at the movie's end gives the movie the lift it's wanted for the previous hour and a half. --Bret Fetzer

    Description

Inspired by a true story, Antonio Banderas stars as internationally acclaimed ballroom dancer Pierre Dulane in the energetic and moving film Take The Lead. When Dulane volunteers to teach dance in the New York public school system, his background first clashes with his students' tastes...but together they create a completely new style of dance.

4 out of 5 stars "I've got five bucks saying you won't be back tomorrow".......2007-08-11

When we read the description of this movie, the expectation is that we will get a story that has been told before, but this time using dancing as the motivator. Movies in a similar vein that came to mind were "Stand and Deliver", which uses math, and "Music of the Heart", which uses music. And in terms of the plot, there are not many surprises there. But the delivery is outstanding; the music and dancing are used perfectly to make us forget about the trite plot.

"Take the Lead" is based on the true story of Mr. Pierre Dulaine, a ballroom dancer and teacher who shows the traits of an old-fashioned gentleman and argues that the dancing cultivates these characteristics. This is a movie about contrasts and about how differences can be bridged. The music and dancing are used as a perfect metaphor for this idea. Right from the beginning we see people getting ready for a party at the beat of different music, hip hop on on side and a ballade on the other. The differences tumble down from there. From the clothing to the ambiance, the world of ballroom dancing and the world of a high school party dominated by hip hop, could not be farther apart.

The two worlds collide when Jason, a student at John Drake High School, is destroying the car of the principal of the school and Pierre comes along in his bike (and this is a bicycle, mind you) and inquires about Jason's acts. The next day, Mr. Dulaine shows up at the principals office and asks for a chance to teach these kids ballroom dancing. She laughs at him, but then decides to teach him a lesson and sends him to try his plan on a group of students on detention. Pierre, who we already suspect was yearning for a challenge, does not waver in his purpose. He experiences a disastrous first reunion, but little by little manages to reach these kids and show them that they can dream again.

There are several things that make this film enjoyable. First, there is the dancing, which is very entertaining and uplifting, and shows some very skilled performers. I was mostly impressed by Jenna Dewan, who is outstanding in an unconventional tango scene. Then, there is the music, which ranges from silky love songs to fashionable and catching hip hop. Finally, even though the story is unoriginal, it is told in such a way that keeps us engaged throughout the duration. Overall, this is a movie worth watching if you enjoy music and dance.

4 out of 5 stars (3.5 STARS) Predictable But Charming with Nice Dance Scenes and Charisma of Antonio Banderas.......2007-07-24

I had been recently disappointed with a string of Antonio Banderas' films such as so-so "The Legend of Zorro" and terrible "Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever," so I didn't expect much from "Take the Lead" before watching it. I thought this might be another disappointment. I was wrong. Antonio Banderas as ballroom dancer teaching dancing at inner-city high school is just fantastic, exactly the reason you should see this enjoyable film.

Banderas plays real-life dancer Pierre Dulaine, whose life the film is very loosely based upon. After witnessing an angry high school student "Rock" (Rob Brown) smashing a car parked in the street one night, Pierre Dulaine volunteers to teach ballroom dancing to the students in detention hall. Principal of the school (Alfre Woodard) accepts his offer only because no one else wants the duty of watching over detention, and it doesn't cost anything financially.

Like such films as "Save the Last Dance" or more recently "Step Up" (of which star Jenna Dewan can be seen here, doing great dance scenes), the storyline of "Take the Lead" itself is certainly predictable. The tough reality surrounding the students is suggested through several episodes, but "Take the Lead" quickly moves forward and as its title suggests, it wraps up with positive messages on life, and rousing dancing sequences. It may lack the edgy direction of Baz Luhrmann's "Strictly Ballroom," but it is a charmer all the same. Perhaps one or two too many characters appear and Alfre Woodard's high school principle with realistic thinking could have been more fleshed out, but still everyone is given a moment to shine, especially the young cast doing great job as rebellious but likable students.

There is a documentary film "Mad Hot Ballroom" dealing with the same material and it may help you understand what is really going on in these classes in reality (though this film is about elementary school students). But I did enjoy watching "Take the Lead" and quite impressed with the charisma of Antonio Banderas, who is simply wonderful.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Choice.......2007-06-08

This is an excellent dance movie. Antonio Banderas shows that with a little caring and a helping hand we don't have to loose our children to the streets.

5 out of 5 stars great values for kids and adults.......2007-05-22
