Conspiracies abound in Children of Dune, Sci-Fi Channel's praiseworthy miniseries sequel to Frank Herbert's Dune, loyally adapted from the Herbert novels Dune Messiah and Children of Dune by John Harrison, who passed directorial duties (due to a scheduling conflict) to Greg Yaitanes, a 31-year-old TV director and Dune neophyte tackling his biggest assignment to date. Uninitiated viewers face a disadvantage; it's best to read Herbert's books and/or see the first miniseries before plunging into this remarkably coherent tangle of political intrigue, unfolding 12 years after the events of Dune.
To his horror, Maud'Dib--Arrakis emperor Paul Atreides (Alec Newman, reprising his Dune role)--has become the unintended figurehead of a violent dictatorship, and his enemies are multiplying. Vanishing into the desert, he waits as destiny shapes his twin heirs Leto II (James McAvoy) and Ghanima (Jessica Brooks), who must contend with their scheming aunt Alia (Daniela Amavia) while Princess Wensicia (Susan Sarandon), of the enemy House Corrino, plots her own attack on Maud'Dib's familial empire. Exiled Atreides matriarch Lady Jessica (Alice Krige, giving the film's finest performance) returns to Arrakis, where the enormous, desert-dwelling sandworms face an uncertain future. As always, the spice must flow, and the universe's most coveted commodity remains at the center of this richly detailed and physically impressive production. Special effects range from awesome (fly-over shots of the capital city, Arakeen) to awful (the saber-tooth tigers look like Jumanji rejects), and Dune devotees will endlessly debate the miniseries' strengths and weaknesses. Some may desire more action to punctuate the film's inherent verbosity, but consensus will surely conclude that this is Dune done right, with monumental effort and obvious devotion from everyone involved. --Jeff Shannon

Wow.......2007-06-29
I haven't ready of the books, I won't lie to you about that.
I haven't seen much Sci-Fi beyond what's universally known (Star Wars, Star Trek, etc.)
But I will still tell you this much...
This is one of the best mini-series I have ever watched. You get everyting in this, drama, suspense, action and so much more.
If you're planning on buying this to get a war miniseries, an all out action miniseries, or even a "cool and trippy" sci-fi miniseries, this may not be for you.
It's so much deeper than that and unfortunately I don't think a lot of people will be able to appreciate it. That being said, if you're in the mood for a good story, I'd recommend this one.
I would however behoove you to check out the first miniseries,Frank Herbert's Dune (TV Miniseries) (Director's Cut Special Edition) , before watching this one, if only to get a full appreciation and understanding of what's going on.
Affordable and Amazing to watch!.......2007-06-07
After watching the first mini-series of dune (and loving it!), I immediately watched the second as soon as I got it. I thought it was even better then the first.
First I'm glad they fixed some minors problems, a major issue with everyone was the Fremen's neon glowing eyes. They toned it down to a more subtle believable look.
Second was the great casting. I think almost everyone did a great job. My favorite actors were the ones playing Leto II, Ghanima, Irulan, and Alia. They gave such a powerful performance and really gave their character emotions that we can respond to and feel for. Like Alia's tortured possession scene, Irulan's love for Paul, and Leto and Ghanima's journey to put the rule of the universe to order.
Third was the soundtrack. And what an unbelievable score it was! I love every moment with Brian Tyler's piece. I don't think the movie would have been half as successful without it. I listen to it from my ipod, since I love it so much. It's powerful, diverse, and fits the mood of the story and the characters. My favorite tracks are Children of Dune, House Atredies, and Ima Natusf.
All together it creates a great movie, especially one made for television surprisingly. You usually don't get quality like this on 95% of made for tv movies. So I give a lot of credit to the makers for pulling it off so well within a small budget.
I never read the books and at first with the Dune mini-series and this one, some may not understand some point of the story, but really pay attention and you shouldn't have a problem understanding. It helps to watch it a second time around.
With this price, you can't go wrong!
Review: Frank Herbert's Children of Dune (TV Miniseries).......2007-06-06
This sequel to the miniseries "Dune" follows the storyline of the original series of books quite well, and is an excellent addition to my video library. After viewing both miniseries, I am encouraged to re-read the texts covered by this set of videos.
Love this mini series.......2007-06-05
Great continuation of the Dune mini series created by the sci-fi channel. They did a great job representing the book. I'm hoping the come out with God Emperor to continue the series.
Entertaining, but not up to the books........2007-04-19
The hardest part of adapting the Dune books to a film format is that, in the interest of time, one has to decide whether to focus on the action or the politics of the story line. The Children of Dune (actually a combination of the second and third books) opts to try and strike a middle ground and actually succeeds in large part. They get extra credit from me for bringing back the actors from the Dune mini-series. The story is great, the film quality isn't bad. I thought that they played up the maddness of Paul's sister just a little too much for my taste, but Leto's character seemed spot on. Its well worth the purchase if you're a fan of the Dune books. Its amazing to see some of the places that previously existed only in my head on the screen.

Just OK.......2007-09-05
Definitely some impressive shots, but it's got nothing on "Planet Earth" (maybe I shouldn't have expected a comparison considering the price discrepancy b/tw the 2).
Anyway, it is a great way to show off you HD TV as background scenery at a party.
OK---But Not Great.......2007-08-23
I was a little disappointed in the Movie. Some of the shots were pretty good, but some weren't that good. It looked like very little of the Movie was shot with HD Cameras. I think there was way too many shots from outer space onto the Earth. When they overdo something like that, it tends to make you start to lose interest. This movie is nothing like Planet Earth and if you've seen that, you'll be kind of spoiled. If I knew what I know now, I probably would not have bought this movie right away. Maybe later to add to the collection, because in order to have a collection, you have to have some mediocre Movies also.
PC it is.......2007-08-11
I love space videos and movies about the earth but this movie is just too politically correct as it spends too much time on how man is damaging the earth. Most of this is unfounded as Mt. St. Hellens put out an immeasurable amount of carbon dioxide when it erupted several years ago, and the earth survived oaky, and then someone drives a modern SUV that puts out a fraction of the emissions of what any compact car did from ten years ago and that is somehow categorized as evil. The earth actually goes through a heating and cooling process over many thousands and millons of years that has nothing to do with man, we can't produce enough carbon dioxide to change this process if we really tried. But yet, Mr Al Gore is getting money from several political interests who don't realize this. I hope he invests his money wisely as someday they will realize this and he will not get a cent. Yes, I am done ranting.
There is some fantastic photography in this movie and it is worth seeing if you can stand the PC stuff.
More of a HD DVD Review..........2007-08-08
This HD DVD disc has two features on it and both are around 50 minutes long. There's really nothing in the way of extras other then the features. Both features are neat at first but how much footage of the earth from space can you watch? That's up to you. Seeing the earth from orbit these days is nothing new. I was extremely disappointed that it all "seemed" to be shot in film. I think they have to do this for IMAX but can't they shoot it in pure hi-def video & transfer it to film for the IMAX? Probably the wrong screen ratios. A good portion of the film "jumps" a lot and it's noticable at 56". They made no attempt to clean the film as there's specs of duct & stuff throughout the features. A lot of the NASA footage is old because everyone is dressed from the early 90's/late 80's. The space shuttle scenes & Earth scenes from space are fine but not as good as Planet Earth's footage and the video essentials hi-def display of the shuttle taking off blow's this disc away.
The surround sound is actually nice here and there. A hurricane segment was really convincing in sound eventhough you're watching old raw footage from "back in the day". Overall, you get a total of under 2 hours of lame "been there, done that" footage. They even have a little rant on saving the planet at the last 10 minutes of Blue Planet with the usual citing of devastating facts but no explanation of the proof. I believe there's a hole in the ozone layer but at least show us some cool satelite/composite shots of it. I don't know why they give you this great display of our planet that makes you proud to be on this great rock in space for 40 minutes and then end it with a "stop polluting your planet idiots", kind of an ending. Eesh. I wish they showed more of the craters on earth. Now that was interesting.
Overall, from an HD DVD point of view...I did not see it in IMAX and thought it would look amazing in HD but I was sadly disappointed. Thank god I rented it. And for the blu-ray folks, it isn't going to be much better because the stock is not fantastic. You get a VC-1 compressed version of older junky film mixed with newer fine looking film.
blue planet on imax.......2007-05-28

It's a mixed blessing, but Frank Herbert's Dune goes a long way toward satisfying science fiction purists who scoffed at David Lynch's previous attempt to adapt Herbert's epic narrative. Ironically, director John Harrison's 288-minute TV miniseries (broadcast on the Sci-Fi Channel in December 2000) offers its own share of strengths and weaknesses, which, in retrospect, emphasize the quality of Lynch's film while treating Herbert's novel with more comprehensive authority. Debate will continue as to which film is better; Lynch's extensive use of internal monologue now seems like a challenge well met, and Harrison's more conventional approach is better equipped to convey the epic scope of Herbert's interplanetary political intrigue.
This much is certain: this Dune is a sumptuous treat for the eyes, with sets and costumes that were conceived with no apparent limits of budget or creativity. In terms of architecture alone, this is one of the most impressive films in science fiction history. And although the special effects fall short of feature-film quality, writer-director Harrison (who rose from an extensive background in TV) admirably tames the sprawling narrative that pits the opposing houses of Atreides and Harkonnen in a struggle to control the lucrative market for the spice melange. This is as accurate as any Dune adaptation is likely to get (i.e., there's no need for another attempt), and even then, it can be tricky to keep track of who's doing what to whom. Unfortunately, the film's biggest flaws are the casting of a nearly comatose William Hurt as Duke Leto, and a wooden Alec Newman as the messiah-to-be, Paul Atreides. These are regrettable shortcomings, but this Dune remains altogether respectable. That Frank Herbert would be impressed is perhaps the biggest compliment one can pay. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Not quite as good as I had hoped, but much better than I expected.......2007-09-05
I read the novel when it first appeared back in the `70s, and I saw the originally movie when it came out in 1984. You're not supposed to buck the critics, but I rather enjoyed David Lynch's film, even with its obvious shortcomings. (But then, I'm a Lynch fan.) Its biggest problem, to my mind, was the inability of any screenwriter or director to cram all the major themes and characters of the book into a two-hour flick, which greatly confused viewers. This miniseries solves that problem up front by running four-and-a-half hours -- lots of time to explicate what Frank Herbert had to say. Even so, this being a visual medium, the emphasis is on the revolt of the Fremen against the Harkonnen, as led by Paul Atreides, a/k/a Muad'Dib. Only William Hurt among the cast is very well known, and he played the duke as a very downbeat character. But the duke's character is much better developed. P. H. Moriarty's portrayal of Gurney Halleck (an ex-slave, don't forget) is much truer to the book's character than Patrick Stewart's boy scout impersonation in the original movie. On the other hand, Linda Hunt was a much more impressive Shadout Mapes in the original. Ian McNiece provided a nice over-the-top rendition of the Baron -- very similar, actually, to Kenneth McMillan's version in the movie. The sets were gorgeous, the effects were . . . well, . . . adequate, and the costumes varied between interesting (the stillsuited Fremen and the cavalier Saudaukar) and laughable (the Bene Gesserit's Easter bonnets). Well, fans will argue the two versions, and both versions against the book, for some time to come. But the miniseries is very much worth watching.
Not Perfect, But the Best So Far.......2007-08-01
It may be impossible for even a three-disc production to approach the depth of Frank Herbert's Dune (Dune Chronicles, Book 1). David Lynch's 1984 adaptation (Dune (Extended Edition)) was interesting, but failed to capture the spirit of the book. This 2000 attempt from the Sci-Fi Channel comes closer, though it still falls short. There are many themes and characters in the book that would have to be sacrificed in a shorter treatment that are given their due here. And even minor characters are fleshed out more fully here than in Lynch's version. On the other hand, many details are changed from the book for no apparent reason. The cast does a fair job--no one actor is outstanding, but all do their job in a way that leaves the viewer free to focus on the story. Alec Newman is not as convincing in the role of Paul as Kyle MacLachlan in Lynch's version, and William Hurt is a puzzling choice for Duke Leto; but P.H. Moriarty fits my vision of Gurney perfectly and Barbora Kodetová is bewitching as Chani. The special effects are below industry standard, but given that the story is the point of the movie, that's not a big concern. Unfortunately, while the movie is a reasonable first approximation to the book, the DVD release wastes an opportunity to enrich our experience: there are many "extras", but only a few are worth watching. So, while I recommend this version of Dune, it's no substitute for reading one of the great epic novels of the 20th century.

Frank Herbert As High Literature Complete With A Blue-Eyed Messiah And The Requisite Giant Carnivorous Worms.......2007-07-14
The multi-nuanced tale told in Dune was never one of my favorites until I saw it here, given a Masterpiece Theater treatment in the small screen version of this much-acclaimed sci-fi heavyweight. By comparing this 2000 release to Masterpiece Theater I refer to the similarities in the way all those classic British novels receive a chapter by chapter breakdown and re-telling on Masterpiece Theater, and the way Dune was unveiled in exactly that detailed format. But I'm saying this in a good way and I'm glad Dune was handled as it was. I have always really enjoyed this re-telling of Frank Herbert's novel, and feel the way it layered its storylines to create depth was admirably reverential. This is a no frills, no superstars production that puts the plot ahead of all else, and as a result this version of Dune is all the better for it. In fact "balanced" is a nice way to describe the final product of this movie: performances, special effects, scenery, story, it all came together very nicely, and I was and am impressed by the result. A film can never match a novel for weight of detail, but here a film does come close.

Don't Buy it ! only rent it if you desperate a Imax fan.......2007-09-17
I won't not recommaed to buy at all cost, is simply not worth it, the document is too short. Is out of order as well, do not even compare to planet earth not comparison at all, only thing this worth to rent for is to see space shuttle launch in full details and some nice picture shot by satellite in our planet. Most of the scene is really not good, and is lacking information.
Beautiful, relaxing Blu-Ray.......2007-09-04
This is a very good Blu-Ray transfer and has beautiful images and commentary of the kind you'd expect from the title. At 40 or so minutes it is rather short, but the accompanying feature is also worth having, though not as good.
Stunning IMAX Double Feature Blu-ray disc.......2007-09-03
I can't believe the negative reviews for these are beautiful transfers of beautiful films. Some scenes look far deeper and sharper than the often mentioned PLANET EARTH series which is beautifully made though "only" on HD-Video. The films presented here are made for screens up to 1.000 square meters big. I always LOVED the slower pace resulting from these big images, just to get the time to take it all in. Also the earth views are so beautiful they need a slower pace. That is too much for some viewers it seems. Feeeeed meee with more more more...
THE DREAM IS ALIVE (1985), 37min, features three space shuttle starts from different angles and shows training of astronauts as well as some of the first footage of the earth actually taken in orbit with the highest definition cameras on earth in the 15/70 format. Sure, there are always scenes in the shuttle where they had a lowlight situation and the image is not as sharp as others. One has to take into account the conditions under which these films were made. What counts is the overall impression and that is definitely high definition. Narrated by Walter Cronkite.
On my system, and it's even just a 1280x720 beamer I use this disc to impress my friends and NOT my PLANET EARTH disc ;-) Both films have breathtaking sound (Dolby TrueHD + Dolby Digital + French Dolby Digital). Subtitles French + Espanol.
BLUE PLANET (1990), 44min, to me is a true IMAX classic. Stunning earth views and exploration of the ozone hole at a time when few were talking about it make it one of the most stunning and at the same time serious large format films. Aftermath of San Francisco earthquake and hurricanes in the southeast.
I hope there will be many more IMAX films coming to Blu-ray!
disappointing.......2007-08-25
Blue Planet, by its packaging and subject matter, calls for a comparison with the vastly superior Planet Earth series. This is a little unfair considering the latter is made of recent HD material thoughtfully organized and tied together with a catchy narrative throughout several episodes. By comparison, Blue Planet -and The Dream is Alive- are older material and in many ways dated (the near-future promise of microgravity for the pharmaceutical industry was a 1980s pipe dream, not a 2007 reality just yet...).
However, one could have hoped for a nice video transfer to Blu-Ray. Dated information notwithstanding, the images still have the same inherent beauty. And since the shows were made for IMAX, one believes there should be a way to make them look good.
Unfortunately, they do not. The image quality of Blue Planet (Imax) is uneven, seemingly coming from materials of different original quality (and I exclude the Moon Landing footage). At its best, it only vaguely reminds you of the stunning (and consistent) precision of Planet Earth footage. Most of the time, it seems inferior to the quality of a good, regular DVD on an up-converting player.
Since not enough work has gone into optimizing the image quality of the program -and its companion piece The Dream is Alive- one is left with an obvious realization of what it is primarily: a cheerleading piece for the space program serving mostly NASA's and Lockheed Martin's image building but rather short on content.
Buy Planet Earth in confidence. Almost any audience should be delighted and stunned by its beauty. As for Blue Planet, it should be reserved to the most dedicated -and forgiving- fans of the space program...
Very beatiful visuals, great commentary.......2007-08-20
Disk one "IMAX Blue Planet" is a great diversion, the story and commentary on disk one are somewhat boring I will admit, the visuals are sharp and clean as all BD releases are.
This is a two disk release, disk two has the IMAX film "The Dream is Alive" narrated by Walter Cronkite, I think this is the better of the two films, and I love the sound of Walter's voice as a commentator.
I had watched the second movie at the Kennedy Space Center on their IMAX screen when I was there a couple of years ago, I loved it then, but IMAX is difficult to watch; the screen is so big that at least my eyes cannot take in the whole screen at one time, forcing me to concentrate on one area at a time and missing other elements occurring on screen.
I truly enjoyed watching this on a HDTV, the Blu-ray quality makes it a high def delight, and both disks boast Dolby TrueHD 5.1 sound which made for great sound from both disks.
Neither are "feature presentations" as disk one is only 44 minutes, disk two is 37 minutes, but together they make a great diversion and are highly recommended.
Comparing this offering to the Planet Earth series is like comparing apples and oranges. Planet Earth is incredible, but it also costs (MSRP) of $100.00. I know this is not a Planet Earth review, but many have tried to compare this to it. I recommend that you get both of them, as I have.
If you love this genre, you will love these two movies. And if you're like me and love the commentary of Walter Cronkite, you will definitely love the second disk in the set.

Even more than most of David Lynch's deliberately bizarre and idiosyncratic movies, Dune is a "love-it-or-hate-it" affair. An ambitious, epic, utterly mind-boggling--and, let's admit it, all-out weird--adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic science fiction novel, Dune remains one of the most controversial films in the director's exceedingly provocative career. The story (if Dune can be said to have just one story) is complex and convoluted in the epic tradition; it has

Melange fans have a lot to be excited about with this impressive edition of Dune, though the "Extended Edition" label is a bit misleading. If you are expecting the mythic 4 hour "David Lynch preferred" version that is rumored to be sitting in a vault, don't get your hopes up. This isn't it. In an attempt to quickly sober spice-fueled giddy fans, producer Raffaella De Laurentiis (daughter of Dino De Laurentiis) immediately reveals in the 'Deleted Scenes' introduction that the rumored 4 hour version is just that; a rumor. What this DVD set does contain is the 2 Hour 17 Minute original theatrical release digitally remastered, available for the first time in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen and 5.1 surround sound. The presentation on this edition is a drastic improvement from the original letterboxed release. On the flipside of the DVD

is the alternate 2 hour 57 minute version cut for television. As many fans know, this 'extended' version was disowned by Lynch, who insisted his name be replaced by that famous Hollywood pseudonym "Alan Smithee;" the name used by directors whose film was taken away and recut against their wishes. There is some new material in the 14 minutes of deleted scenes offering a bit more background into the Bene Gesserit sisterhood, the Kwisatz Haderach prophecy and the Fremen culture and their struggle. All other extras focus on the international production crew of Dune including the design team, special effects, and short documentaries on the miniature models and wardrobe designs. Disappointingly, there are no appearances in the bonus features by any of the original cast or Lynch himself. However, many of the production crew members talk openly about working with David Lynch and his artistic involvement in the visual process. To cap it off, this edition comes in a very stylish and sturdy DVD tin that opens like a keep case. --Rob Bracco

Not done right for HD.......2007-09-13
OK the title pretty much says it all. I have always been a fan of this movie but I expected a lot more out of it for a HD-DVD release. The video quality was pretty much the same as the original, none of the graphics were enhanced, and it was other than being made to fit in HD resolutions without issue nothing else was done to the film.
All the blotches that were present on the original film were left and show excessively in the opening credits. The CGI looked entirely untouched. There was in some scenes strong evidence of grainy looking video.
The only reason I give this movie 3 stars is because it's DUNE, if it were any other title I would have received much less. I would have taken a little more care in releasing this movie for HD but apparently I was wrong. You might as well just pick up the original DVD as with a HD player it'll upscale to just about the same quality of this HD-DVD.
Rent it.......2007-09-05
This is not a very good adaptation of the novel, so if you are a purist you will be disappointed.
Alright...until you read the book........2007-08-14
I saw this once; thought it was decent. Then I read the book, and realised just how BAD it was in comparison. It's now impossible for me to watch this and NOT think about what it could have been, if there'd been a genuine attempt to transfer the book's depth to the screen.
Not bad if you've never read the book; but if you love good sci-fi, READ THE BOOK INSTEAD.
the sleeper has awakened.......2007-08-07
This movie is so cool. I can understand why someone who has never read the booK Would find this very hard to follow...or enjoy. But I LOVED it. I think the acting was good...aside from maybe Sting's (which wasn't too bad either). The ending was not what I expected, but hey, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I couldn't keep my eyes off it, and the cinemetography is so well done, that I could find something different each time I watch it. Very cool.

An Ikebana-Trained Artiste Shows Startling Avant-Garde Style in an Intriguing DVD Box Set.......2007-08-19
Filmmaker Hiroshi Teshigahara was a true artiste who saw film as one of several creative outlets, which is why the sum of his cinematic output feels relatively paltry compared to his contemporaries. The Criterion Collection has smartly seen fit to present a four-disc DVD set showcasing his three most accomplished works - plus four shorts and a feature-length documentary about Teshigahara and his most frequent collaborator, author/screenwriter Kôbô Abe. Teshigahara's style can best be described as avant-garde, especially compared to the previous generation of Japanese filmmakers who focused far more on narrative structure and emotional consistency - Kurosawa, Mizoguchi, Ozu. As judged by these works, Teshigahara seems far interested more in challenging a viewer's sensibilities with movies that confound as much as they resonate. The results were not always successful, but they are well worth experiencing.
The first film of the set, 1962's "Pitfall" (****), represents Teshigahara's debut as a feature filmmaker and is both an expressionistic ghost story and a scathing social critique of Japan's post-WWII labor conditions within the mining industry. The mystery-laden plot focuses on a poor coal miner, who is murdered in front of his young son after moving to a ghost town where the local mine becomes a battleground between the two unions that run it. The miner's ghost attempts to solve the crime and figure out the motive, all the while as mistrust permeates the community with more deaths occurring. The filmmaker's social agenda sometimes gets in the way of a corking detective story, but he also presents a haunting, often surreal allegory of social alienation and moral bankruptcy. Hisashi Igawa lends a palpable desperation to the doomed miner, while Kunie Tanaka cuts an appropriately austere figure as the unavoidable stranger in the white suit.
An international art house hit that even garnered Oscar nominations, 1964's "Woman in the Dunes" (*****) is the set's centerpiece and a deserving masterpiece. The highly symbolic story focuses on an amateur entomologist on what he thinks is a day trip from Tokyo to a seaside area with vast sand dunes. As he looks for a particular beetle that he thinks will bring him fame within scientific circles, he loses track of time, and local villagers come upon him. For overnight lodging, they take him to a woman who lives in the bottom of a sand pit reachable only by a rope ladder. With the ladder gone the next morning, it dawns on him that he is being held captive by the villagers. From this revelation, Teshigahara and Abe focus on how the man deals with the situation and his evolving feelings toward the woman. Eiji Okada (Hiroshima Mon Amour, The Ugly American) dominates every scene as the emotionally volatile entomologist evolving from sexist entitlement to humiliating desperation to serene resignation. As the woman, the offbeat-looking Kyôko Kishida initially seems to be playing Friday to Okada's Robinson Crusoe, but her character starts to reveal layers that startle and fill in necessary plot details. The film's overall unnerving tone makes it feel often like an extended episode of a Twilight Zone.
The third film presented is 1967's "The Face of Another" (***1/2), which provides some unsettling sci-fi elements in its piercing exploration of identity, personal freedom and social acceptance. It's probably the most audacious of the three films, but Teshigahara's overly stylized approach makes it arguably the least satisfying on an emotional level. That's because the primary characters feel somewhat removed from reality starting with an embittered burn victim named Okuyama, his face completely bandaged. He has an oddly co-dependent relationship with his psychiatrist, who gives him a prosthetic mask that allows him to start his life anew. However, Okuyama's emotionally isolated wife returns into his life, and the inevitable complications occur. Meanwhile, there is a parallel story centered on a young woman who bears a large radiation burn on her face, a victim of the atomic bomb dropped in Nagasaki. Her wish is to conform wither surroundings and be accepted, which makes for an intriguing counterpoint to Okuyama's plight. Tatsuya Nakadai (Harakiri, Ran, When a Woman Ascends the Stairs) plays the challenging role of Okuyama with effective menace and melancholy, and as his wife, the legendary Machiko Kyô (Rashomon, Ugetsu, Floating Weeds) lends an elegant but tangible sense of concealment to her relatively few scenes.
Each film benefits greatly from Tôru Takemitsu's mood-setting music impressive for the versatility he displays with each score. Although extras are modest, each DVD has the original trailer and a generally illuminating if sometimes overly verbose video essay by James Quandt, who heads the Ontario Cinematheque. The fourth disc contains "Teshigahara and Abe", an intriguing documentary that covers the filmmaker's eclectic life, including his years being groomed to take over his father's world-renowned ikebana (flower arrangement) school. The four relatively modest shorts provide variable interest to aficionados - 1953's "Hokusai" spotlights the famous block artist; 1956's "Ikebana", a color film which shows the hard-earned artistry found in his father's school; 1958's "Tokyo 1958", an odd curio designed to show the vibrancy of the city at the time; and 1965's "Ako", a simple short about a girl's night on the town. Finally, there is a fifty-page booklet that provides further insight into a filmmaker more than worthy of rediscovery.
A Film Artist from a Bygone Era in World Cinema.......2007-08-16
Teshigahara arrived, under the radar, in the 60's.... overshadowed by other world cinema srtists like Bergman, Fellini, Antonioni. The difference, is that Teshigahara was a real artist..that is in "fine arts"...a sculptor who balanced the two worlds. His films are extremely visual, and in partnership with his Japanese existential-surrealist author Kobe Abe handling the story lines (many of his films were adapted from Kobe's novels)--created a unque body of ART-FILM.....AND STORY. Outstanding, memorable, and never-to-be duplicated in our bottom-line driven world of film financing. Masterpieces, pure and simple.
Excellent release.......2007-08-12
This box set by Criterion contains three films on four discs.
The first film Pitfall, released in Japan as, Otoshiana, is about a man who dies and becomes a ghost.
The second film Woman in the Dunes, released in Japan as, Suna no onna, is about an entomologist who misses his bus back to town. He is offered a place to stay for the night which is in a sand pit accessible only by ladder. The widow who lives there then holds him captive.
The third film, The Face of Another, released in Japan as, Tanin no kao, is about a man whose face is disfigured in a fire who is given a realistic mask by a doctor.
Each of these films, especially Woman in the Dunes is excellent. I have been waiting for Criterion to release Woman in the Dunes for several years.
The release contains an entire disc of special features too. There are video essays on each film by movie critic, James Quandt. Also there is a documentary about Teshigahara and his colleague Kobo Abe. Finally Four short films Hiroshi Teshigahara directed are included. They are Hokusai, Ikebana, Tokyo 1958, and Ako/White Morning (1963)
criterion does it again.......2007-07-09
Great job Criterion in releasing the work of a brilliant director. Have seen Woman in the Dunes and Face of Another; both are based on novels by surreal Japanese writer Kobe Abe. Both are Kafkaesque stories of identity
and loss of identity as well as modern man's function in a society where
the self is disappearing. They are both clinical in their dissection of their characters but at the same time dream-like, moody, paranoid, and nightmarish with a touch of the macabre. Face of Another may be a bit less
accessible but both are very deep psychological meditations, brilliant in their simplicity and style. Teshigahara was a true original, at once a part of the japanese New Wave yet somehow distinct from it. He reminds me a bit of Czech director Jan Nemec. This collection is a welcome addition to Criterion's impressive releases. Hopefully "The Ruined Map" which is a slightly later Teshigahara film again based on a Kobe Abe novel will be released at some point, but these three films are more than adequate to familiarize people with an extremely important Director.
Woman in the Dunes is the proper version...........2007-06-07
The only film here I've seen is Woman in the Dunes, which is Teshigahara's most famous work. It's a great film, but Criterion is releasing the 147 minute version, which is the full length, director's cut. The original Image DVD was only 127 minutes long, and it's the only version I've seen. So kudos to Criterion for releasing the long version, and the other 2 films as well.

Don't be surprised if you feel a dry, tickling sensation in the back of your throat after watching the slam-bang racing documentary Dust to Glory. It's probably from the lingering sand and silt spewed from the knobby wheels of an array of machines that skitter from one end of the Baja Peninsula to the other. Using 90 cameras in a variety of formats, director Dana Brown captures the giddy danger of the race with truly visceral force. In 1967, a few California thrill-seekers had the Eureka spirit to take their homemade race cars for some whooping-up in the wide-open land just a few hours away. Since then, the Baja 1000 has turned into a party-fueled happening that's more akin to Burning Man than the Indy 500. It's billed as the world's longest nonstop race, running point-to-point for 1,000 miles through the Mexican desert from Tijuana to La Paz--pretty much the entire length of Baja.
Dana Brown is the son of Bruce Brown, whose 1966 film The Endless Summer sparked a surfing craze, and still holds up as an incomparable ode to the existential surfing lifestyle. Dust to Glory is by no means so profound and uses more of a Warren Miller thrill-marketing style (he of the annual throwaway extreme-skiing films). Cameras swoop down from helicopters, careen through silt, and are put into tracks over which vehicles pass at extreme speeds. In spite of the adrenaline rush, Dust to Glory is ultimately more about what people think about the higher implications of the competition. One veteran finisher describes it this way: "It's like having all 10,000 close calls of your life in one day. It makes regular life feel like slow-motion." --Ted Fry
Description
From the creators of Step Into Liquid comes this "amazing" (Variety), "absolutely exhilarating" (LA Weekly) film about the most notorious and dangerous race in the world: the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000. Showcasing Mario Andretti, Robby Gordon, Johnny Campbell and J.N. Roberts, and packed with awesome helicopter footage, in-your-face POV shots and stories of raw courage, Dust to Glory follows a wild assortment of motorcycles, dune buggies, ATV quads and tricked-out trucks in a 32-hour dash across 1,000 miles of unforgiving terrain and delivers such pulse-pounding thrills that "you feel like you've been there" (LA Weekly)!

Very Good Documentary .......2007-09-16
I thought this was a very good documentary for people that are into racing, motorcycles and off road enduro racing. I am not sure that somebody who isn't into those things would like it but I found it quite compelling and entertaining. For all you gear heads, bikers, and racing fans check it out I think you'll like it very much.
Awsome.......2007-06-16
If you call yourself a fan of off-road racing, then this is a film that you need to have at the top of your DVD collection. With some of the most awsome footage that I personally have ever seen and an awsome narration by the director, the story of the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 takes on a whole new light. This is a must see.
Dust to Glory.......2007-06-09

Even more than most of David Lynch's deliberately bizarre and idiosyncratic movies, Dune is a "love-it-or-hate-it" affair. An ambitious, epic, utterly mind-boggling--and, let's admit it, all-out weird--adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic science fiction novel, Dune remains one of the most controversial films in the director's exceedingly provocative career. The story (if Dune can be said to have just one story) is complex and convoluted in the epic tradition; it has something to do with political intrigue and a planet that is home to a precious spice and gigantic sand worms. Think Shakespeare's Henry IV with a dash of Tremors, and set in another galaxy. But despite plenty of strangely whispered voice-overs that explain the characters' thoughts (and endlessly detailed exposition), storytelling is not really among the film's strong points. There are, however, a lot of memorably fantastic/grotesque images, an extraordinary cast, and a soundtrack featuring Toto. I told you it was weird. Among the stars are Kyle MacLachlan, José Ferrer, Dean Stockwell, Brad Dourif, Sting, Kenneth McMillan, Patrick Stewart, Sean Young, and Linda Hunt. The DVD contains the original release version; a shorter version cut for television has been disowned by Lynch, who insisted his name be replaced by that famous Hollywood pseudonym "Alan Smithee." --Jim Emerson

Long, weird, and totally overwrought--Dune is mainly worth checking out for the fantastic art direction, cinematography, and bizarre sci-fi vision of David Lynch.
Just clarifying a point made earlier.......2006-11-15
This is the 'short' version (2hr 17min) and the only version finally approved by David Lynch. The extended version (which can be bought here as well) is the one that Lynch disowned, insisting that it be labeled 'directed by Alan Smithee', the name used when a director refuses to put his or her name on a finished film. In my opinion, however, the extended version is much more complete, and regardless of having been disowned by Lynch, provides a lot more background and insight into the characters in the film, and is almost word for word from the book. Much more so than this version, which assumes the watcher has read the book and knows the background. It's just my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt, but I recently purchased the other version available here which includes both versions of the film, both David Lynch's and 'Alan Smithee's' films, and it's only 2 dollars more than this one, and comes in a neat collectors tin with nice paperwork inside and a 2-sided DVD.

Awesome to another level!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-10-24
I saw this movie as a kid and was amazed at the graphics and effects of it. Sting looked awesome as a killer. I wish there was even more to it. Wish he would release the rest before he goes.
Save Your Money.......2006-08-31
So awful you have to laugh to keep from crying. The dialogue is almost impossible to listen to, the acting is wooden and at times ridiculous, and the special effects are very, very dated. It reminded me of the old "Lost in Space" TV program, and that isn't good.
David Lynch's Misunderstood Epic.......2006-07-31
Before David Lynch made the masterful&creepy "Mulholland Drive",he attempted-nobly-to put Frank Herbert's epic on the silver screen.Instead of trying to stay EXACTLY true to the story,he did keep its spirit. He doesn't explain too much, such as with the experiences of the Spice.
Kyle MacLachlan is the excellent--and DEFINITIVE--Paul Muad'Dib.He shows how the young man,who goes from losing his father&living in exile with the Fremen, becomes a messianic leader. His transformation is believable&sympathetic.
Sean Young has a VERY small role as Chani, who's more important in the book than the movie. Her romance with Paul is hardly explained.
Virginia Madsen, who was in the recent pinot film noir "Sideways" has a small role as Princess Irulan, the Emperor's daughter who is forced into a loveless marriage with Paul.It is interesting that in the book,Princess Irulan's memories form the backbone&frame Paul's experiences.
Sian Phillips&Francesca Annis are both powerful as Bene Gesserit Reverend Mothers.Francesca Annis' role goes from being a widow to a powerful&respected Reverend Mother among the Fremen. In the book,Jessica is merely Duke Leto Atreides' concubine, whom he regrets not marrying;in the movie,Jessica is Duke Leto's wife.
Patrick Stewart has a pleasant role as Paul's mentor,Gurney Halleck.Who knew one day he'd be Capt.Picard?
Considering the time period, the special effects in "Dune" are excellent;the setting is believable. It's a fascinating&aesthetically marvelous movie.

Theater star Sarah Brightman turns up the heat in this sexy, baroque DVD counterpart to her 2003 world music CD, Harem. Brightman's artistic purpose on that album--marrying the rhythms of the Middle East to her otherwordly pop sound (as opposed to her boomy, operatic sound)--aren't lost here, but don't expect to catch a glimpse of such exciting studio collaborators as violin star Nigel Kennedy amidst countless shots of the diva in various states of undress. The lavish visual production sets several songs in exotic recreations of fabled harems, where lust is tempered by decorum but sex is clearly on the menu. For a change, Brightman's ethereal version of "Stranger in Paradise" (from Kismet) is shot against a starkly beautiful, mountainous backdrop, and "What You Never Know," a song about the passage of time, includes touching images of children and old people. --Tom Keogh

HAREM DESERT FANTASY.......2007-09-08
Fun and very interesting where and how and the hard work it takes for a final production we can sit in our easy chairs and enjoy.

I have loved Sarah Brightman's music and bought this without research or hearing it. So bad I donated it to the library.
Sarah Brightman's Harem Desert Fantasy.......2007-02-06
This is a great dvd to watch. Sarah does a brief interview before each song, she has such a beautiful voice either in her music or her interviews.
