5 out of 5 stars Godzillalicious.......2007-01-16

Excellent choice for Godzilla freaks! If you want nonstop earth shattering action, this is the collection for you.

2 out of 5 stars Great movies but the Collection is without merit.......2006-12-31

First off, these are all good to excellent Godzilla
flicks - lots of fun and worth owning. I give 2 stars
because if you don't happen to already own any of these,
you can at least get an instant collection for a fairly
good deal (low price).

The bad news is for those who are not new to Godzilla and
who have a collection already: all Sony did, from the looks
of it, is bundle up the back stock of previously released dvds.
There are no decent extras to speak of. This collection
features 9 movies on 7 disks as follows (two disks are double
features).

The Good:

Yes, there is some good here! The following are how ALL the
movies should have been handled and would have made this a more
solid effort on Sony's part:

Godzilla x Megaguirus, GMK and Godzilla x Mechagodzilla are
all in High Definition, offer English and Japanese soundtracks
and english subtiltles, which is the way ALL Godzilla flicks
should be presented in this day and age of DVDs.

The Bad:

Godzilla x Mothra Battle for Earth and Godzilla x Ghidorah.
A travesty because these are STILL not presented in their
original aspect ration; they have NO JAPANESE soundtrack and don't
even have close captioning/English Subs. These are the exact
same Full Screen-No Frills copies that have been floating around
for years - whats up with Columbia Tristar!?

Godzilla x Space Godzilla and Godzilla x Destroyah. Great
flicks which are at least in widescreen. Columbia Tristar
still held off from including a Japanese soundtrack!

Godzilla 2000 - still just an English dub here folks, sorry.
At least its in widescreen; there is also a comentary track and
a few other nice extras which lift this disk up a bit.

The Ugly:

Godzilla 1998 - including this movie was weak. It isn't
all that bad if you can forget it bears the title of a
Godzilla movie because that's where any similarities end. It
doesn't need further comment except to say its a dinosaur
movie with lots of CGI effects and no heart. Its worth
seeing for the general viewer of hollywood style flicks.

In conclusion, Sony didn't do anything to make this a more
interesting collection for the long-time, long-term fan. I'm
not as sour on Sony/Columbia Tristar as I may sound here, but
this release just doesn't have anything extra.
Sony will have little to say to those who seek out bootlegs
or versions released from other countries in order to view
the movies as they were originally released.

50th Anniversary Editions:
Better news is that the other earlier 70s Godzilla flicks
(GxMegalon, GxGigan, GxMechaGodzilla etc.) were released
with English and Japanese dubs. Hoo-Ray for Columbia Tristar!

1 out of 5 stars Don't bother with this if you love Godzilla.......2006-07-26

This is probablythe worst set of movies to be put together. Even "Godzilla vs Megalon" had MORE HEART and Fun than these rejects. Watch the classics if you can-they are all much better and more family friendly. People used to MTV quality and trash movies though will probably go Ga-GA over these efforts though.

Buy the special edition Gojira or english subtitled Japanese language Godzilla movies out or soon to be released instead.

5 out of 5 stars For a limited time only: Things The Curmudgeon actually LIKES - Part Four!.......2006-03-19

If any of you are familiar with The Curmudgeon's other reviews, you may well be scratching your heads at this one. A FIVE star review?! That can't be right. And usually, YOU would be right. The Curmudgeon has dedicated 95 of his 100 reviews to bringing you the very worst things out there. To celebrate the 50 review milestone I reviewed 5 GREAT things that are available on Amazon, and so, now I've reached 100, I thought I'd do the same again. So, from reviews 100 - 105, it's going to be nothing but good, great and awesome stuff.

Sometimes there's no justice. The term "Giant Monster Movies" immediately throws up two names: Godzilla and King Kong. The two kings of the genre have never really been fairly matched, however. Whilst Godzilla has a far greater quantity of movies, the big monkey certainly wins out in the quality stakes. Godawful 70's remake and sequel aside, Kong has fared better in the original movie (easily one of the greatest movies ever made) and the new glossy big budget remake certainly fared better than the abysmal 90's US attempt at Godzilla.

Speaking of THAT film, it's included on this boxset. Now let us never speak of it again. There's far better films to consider, all of which embrace the sense of adventure, inventiveness and fun that make this genre such a joy to watch. This boxset collects some of the more recent efforts, miles away from the more kiddie-friendly fare of the 70's movies. These are far more, um, realistic(?) in approach, a nod to the more serious side of the Big G. It's a superb collection that, crappy American attempt aside, will please anyone who don't salivate over the latest 100 million dollar CGI-fest. A guy in a suit it may be, but the genius of these movies is their ability to make you believe that it's a bad ass radioactive dinosaur trashing Tokyo for the millionth time.

This review isn't just about this boxset in particular, but Godzilla movies in general. If you can accept the often ropey effects, the absurd plots and wonky dialogue, they offer a sense of escapism that is unmatched. These movies have a passion and genuine love for their monsters that is so infectious, it isn't long before you know all of the monsters and are cheering on your favourites ("Go Mecha-Godzilla! Wooooh!")

King Kong and Godzilla, then. Kong may have the better movies, but Godzilla remains the better - and best - monster. Regardless of all the "final movie" comments (pah, I'll believe it when I see it) - long may his reign continue.

And that's part four of five taken care of. Just one more thing that The Curmudgeon actually likes. But what on earth could it be? Only one way to find out...

5 out of 5 stars I truly hope you didn't wait too long for these classics.......2007-08-24

Mystery Science Theater 3000 is without a doubt the greatest television show of all time. I have been buying these Rhino DVD collections since they began releasing them and treasure each and every episode. I hope you didn't hesitate to purchase this one because it had an extremely short print and is already selling for 3 times its original cost. Don't delay to buy any of the other volumes because they could lose the rights to sell any episode at any time. Any of the Japanese films like Godzilla vs. Megalon are especially insanely hilarious episodes. This collection is a great sampling from different years of the show with The Giant Spider Invasion coming from the Sci-fi channel era. Probably the greatest thing about MST3K is that the more you watch the episode, the funnier it gets and you love it even more. I have never tired of an episode yet. As you can probably tell, I am a huge fan of MST3K. If you have never seen this show, you need to see what truly great artistic television is all about.

4 out of 5 stars Godzilla vs. The Giant Spider.......2007-01-29

Opening Credits (Beginning Remarks):

I frequently visit the mst3kinfo website to discover when the next MST3K collection will be released. But what's usually more important is not when the volume will emerge from Rhino, but what it will contain. For me it's always a fun mix between finally being able to own episodes that I've already seen and enjoyed, and anticipation of episodes I've only heard about. This time it was mostly a case of finally seeing episodes new to me. But one was an episode I had been long looking forward to viewing again. Some brief comments on each of the episodes follow.

GODZILLA VS. MEGALON

Although only two monsters are named in the title, the film actually contains more than the expected number of heroes and villains. Godzilla, you know. Megalon is a sort of giant insect with metal spikes for arms, called to Earth by an ancient subterranean civilization to destroy humanity. Jet Jaguar is a humanoid robot built by a Japanese scientist that displays a surprising amount of self-awareness and independence, even going so far as to re-program itself so that it can grow from human-sized to Godzilla-sized in a matter of seconds (Asimo has nothing on this guy). Gigan is a giant robotic lizard thing which allies itself with Megalon.

The second half of the movie involves these four monsters beating each other up on models of Japan. This is a lot of fun. Unfortunately, the conventional way of getting to the second half of the film involves sitting through the first half, and the first half is a duller than watching paint dry. On the plus side, the jokes from Joel and the bots liven it up a lot.

SWAMP DIAMONDS

When the plot summary contains a gang of jail-breaking female bandits on the run from the cops and attempting to find diamonds they buried before their previous arrest, "boring" should not be the adjective one would use to describe the final product. And, yet, there is no way around using that descriptor here.

The film stars Mike Connors (a.k.a. Mannix), credited here as Touch Connors. A police woman infiltrates a gang of three woman, along the way capturing and falling for Connors' character. This is a typical Roger Corman piece of fluff, but fortunately - once again -- Joel and the bots keep us from falling asleep.

TEEN-AGE STRANGLER

If TEEN-AGE STRANGLER had been made in the 1970s or 80s, then it would have been what we now call a teen slasher movie. However, this was made in the relatively more restrained 1960s, and therefore is only a teen strangler movie.

The plot of the film is almost exactly what the title suggests. A suburban high school is being terrorized by a criminal who goes around at night strangling the local teenagers. As the cast is made up mostly of teenagers, the quality of the acting is really all over the place which gives the MST folks lots to mock (their send up of the nerdy Mikey character is hilarious).

THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION

I hadn't seen this episode since back when it had aired on the Sci-Fi Channel, so I was really looking forward to it. As you can guess this one involves a giant spider from outer space terrorizing rural Wisconsin in the 1970s. The casting director must have been calling up people completely at random; I can see no other way in which they got both Barbara Hale and Alan "The Skipper" Hale in the same movie. The Wisconsin setting gives the gang a lot of fodder for jokes (remember that Mike Nelson and a few of the writing staff had once lived in Wisconsin). The repeated references to the Green Bay Packers team and players never failed to crack me up.

Love Theme (Conclusion):

This was quite a good collection and one which I was eager to get my hands on once the contents were announced. I hadn't seen this Godzilla episode, and based on their mocking of other Japanese monster movies, I couldn't wait to see this one. THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION had been one of my favorite episodes of the Sci-Fi years, so I couldn't wait to see that one again. This is a nice mixture of different eras from the show's run, so it should be great for fans and newbies alike.

4 out of 5 stars The changing face (and rubber suit) of Godzilla over the years.......2007-05-09

Columbia's boxed set offers a trio of Godzilla flicks that covers his changing personality (and rubber suits) over the years.

1967's Son of Godzilla is from the period when the movies had abandoned their apocalyptic roots and were aimed firmly at children, with a more benign Godzilla who may trample the odd building, but only on his way to take out some giant mantis beating up on his newly hatched son. Like Son of Kong, this is largely played for laughs, with dad teaching junior (the unfortunately named Minilla) how to breathe fire or inadvertently finding his tail used as a skipping rope for the little tyke. It's not one of the best of the series, but if you're in an undemanding mood it's entertaining enough and has a typically funky Masaru Satoh score.

1975's Godzilla Vs. MechaGodzilla is from his protector of Japan period and sees him up against a giant robot replica controlled by space monkeys. It's an attempt to move back into slightly more adult territory with increased (but not terribly convincing) violence and some hand-held camerawork, although the presence of space monkeys and the fact that Godzilla's ally, King Caesar, is a curious cross between the Cowardly Lion and a Pekinese dog, make it seem a somewhat half-hearted one.

By contrast, 2003's Godzilla Tokyo SOS, part of the third wave of Godzilla flicks, returns the Big Guy to his mean city stomping roots (no sappy protector of Japan stuff here) in a surprisingly well directed number with some superb visuals, is much more successful and one of the most exciting in the series. The film hits the ground running with a great opening that sees a jet chasing an unidentified flying object hidden in the clouds, with only a giant beating wing dimly visible, before setting out its stall as a direct if somewhat belated sequel to Mothra Vs. Godzilla. The attempt to impose a moral dilemma on the narrative doesn't really work because it's so confused: unless Godzilla's bones, used to build the giant MechaGodzilla robot to defend Japan, are returned to the sea, Mothra will attack Japan. If they are, Mothra will defend Japan from Godzilla. Naturally they don't listen, only for Mothra to end up defending Tokyo anyway when Godzilla attacks... Go figure.

There are plenty of nice touches, including having the showdown in a part of Tokyo that still hasn't been rebuilt after Godzilla's last rampage, the first full appearance of Mothra amid falling peony blossoms is a strikingly beautiful piece of imagery, and best of all, not only is Godzilla back to his old bad*** self but the singing Japanese fairy girls are back. With particularly good special effects and action sequences, it's a highly enjoyable addition to the canon.

Extras are thin on the ground on the set: Godzilla Tokyo SOS has the brief Japanese teaser trailer and 21-minutes of behind the scenes footage, but aside from offering good 2.35:1 transfers with either the original subtitled Japanese soundtrack or a dubbed English-language version, the only extras are brief trailers for other DVD releases.

5 out of 5 stars A Worthwhile Boxed Set for Godzilla Fans.......2005-01-18

This Godzilla boxed set from Columbia Tristar includes three films of varying quality: "Son of Godzilla," "Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla," and "Godzilla: Tokyo SOS." Combined, they make for a very enjoyable evening for any Godzilla fan.
"Son of Godzilla" is easily the weakest of the three films. Though its special optical effects are surprisingly good, the other special effects are very limited and unengaging. The addition of a Godzilla son (Minya, or Minilla) was a goofy mistake, and the human subplots are extremely unengaging. To top it all off, the monster battles are almost non-existent, and the various monster opponents are appallingly sub-par.
"Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla" is one of the best of the 70s Godzilla movies (and certainly the best to be directed by Jun Fukuda). The story involved alien monkeys trying to take over earth with the help of Mechagodzilla, a giant mechanical Godzilla clone. This marked a definite improvement over previous entires with its mature, gritty atmosphere and very enjoyable monster battles (additional monsters include the forgettable King Caeser and, briefly, Angillas).
"Godzilla: Tokyo SOS," a recent Godzilla movie, is my favorite of the set. It's almost plotless, and is basically made up of an engaging three-way battle between Godzilla, Mechagodzilla, and Mothra. This is among the best monster action Toho studios have produced, and the special effects are top-notch. What little plot there is is made more interesting than usual by the presence of the star of the original "Mothra" reprising his role, and a connection between Godzilla and Mechagodzilla that is explored at the film's conclusion.
The DVDs for "Son of Godzilla" and "Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla" are revealations. The 2.35:1 image is spectacularly sharp and bright, with almost no scratches. "Godzilla: Tokyo SOS" looks surprisingly lacklustre for such a recent film, with heavy grain and some truly grotesque moments of edge-enhancement. Purists will be happy to know that the original Japanese audio is included along with the English dub. All films include some random trailers, but "Godzilla: Tokyo SOS" contains a 20-minute Toho-produced documentary about the special effects. It's a bit too slow for the casual fan, but die-hards will enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars If only I had waited..........2004-11-07

It's too bad I didn't just get the other three-pack released back in October, instead of the five-pack, wasting my money on the same old G2K DVD I allready had. Then I could have waited for this one to get Mechagodzilla. But sadly, Tristar decided to announce this a week after my 5-pack arrived. Too bad. Now I have to buy SOG and GMMG seperately.

3 out of 5 stars No 2000 SE.......2004-10-21

I just got this and it doesn't have the Godzilla 2000 Special Edition. Just the regular English dub. It seems like everyone was saying that the 2000 dub/sub would be in here, so I'm wondering where the misinformation originated. The only saving grace is the 3 oldies with the original Japanese track.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great collection, but..........2004-10-20

It may not contain a Japanese/English Special Edition of Godzilla 2000. According to some early reports, this is the same English-only DVD released a few years ago. So, don't buy the box unless you don't any of the films and you also want the U.S Godzilla.

4 out of 5 stars will godzilla 2000 be rereleased seperately?.......2004-08-25

this set is a good set because it has three dvds i dont have and also apparently godzilla 2000 is a new special edition with the japanese version on the other side of the disc! unfortunately those are joined by the worst godzilla film of them all the american godzilla. a dvd that most huge godzilla fans already own like me and that casual fans don't want to own. unfortunately us huge fans may be forced to buy this because of the godzilla 2000 dvd. there is no place i can find to order this seperately so i am very afraid that i will have to buy this. this is a problem because of the cost and also i want to ask for the godzilla dvds for christmas but no one will buy me a five disc set for christmas. its to expensive. so please tristar release the special edition of godzilla 2000 seperataley. just because you have a bunch of extra copies of your bad movie doesn't meen we should have to buy it to get a good movie. UPDATE 10/18/04 the godzilla 2000 disc will NOT have the japanese cut! I recommend this to nobody unless you dont have any of these discs buy the new ones seperately and dont encourage Sony's lies about what is on the dvd's consider my review a one star now.

The day this came to me I watched all of the movies!! Since I was little I have always loved Godzilla and now my son loves it too. This is a super collection to have!!

5 out of 5 stars Godzilla Is The King!.......2007-01-10

This pack has the original film of godzilla, theres alote of destruction. Mothra is very large in "Godzilla vs Mothra". This movie was in the 1960's. Minilla wants to get stronger in order to beat Gabara. a little boy named Ichiro helps out him. He now has has courage to fight in his own battles. This is a sequel to "Son of Godzilla" both made in the 1960s's. A sequel to "Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla"...Terror of MechaGodzilla. After King Caesar and Godzilla defeated the metal menace, and three men stoped the aliens, more aliens apeared and rebuiled him, but now a preostoric monster called Titanosaures controlled by a old man's cyborg daughter. And Godzilla has no partner this time to make things equel. but a team that studies the giant dino and discovers its weakness. see what happens next. Rodan's movie is simaler to the first godzilla movie.

5 out of 5 stars Godzilla-The Ultimate Collection.......2007-01-09

All 5 DVD's work very well. I am very pleased with my purchase.

5 out of 5 stars As much Godzilla as you can stand........2006-10-05

The Ultimate Godzilla DVD Collection has five movies. The first film is Godzilla, King Of The Monsters. It is the original movie that brought Godzilla to life on the big screen. Well, the original did not have Raymond Burr in it, but you understand what I mean. Godzilla is a 400 foot high Tyrannosaurus Rex woken up by an atomic bomb test. Only 78 minutes, it isn't that long a movie.
The second film in the set is Godzilla Vs. Mothra. Mothra, a giant moth, wants her giant egg back and is coming to Japan to get it. Yes, I said moth. Tiny twins, greedy businessmen and Godzilla all guest star in this flick. Mothra would go to make her own flicks.
Godzilla's Revenge has a really bad plot but is really just an excuse to show off all those monsters from past films. Just watch it to enjoy seeing Godzilla kicking [...].
Terror Of Mechagodzilla is a great film. Alien invaders try to use a fake Godzilla, damaged from an earlier battle with Godzilla but not forgotten, to take over the Earth and only the real Godzilla can stop them.
Rodan is just a special bonus movie. Flying at supersonic speeds, two giant creatures cause damage to buildings and snap up humans for lunch. Yummy!
This set is just cool to have and a great gift for any Japanese monster fan.

4 out of 5 stars Great Value.......2006-08-12

With The exception of Godzilla's Revenge (which is probably the worst Godzilla movie ever!) I couldn't have asked for a better set, especially considering the price. 4 of the 5 are solid films, and did I mention the price!?!

1 out of 5 stars Not a Legit Release.......2007-07-31

Since Classic Media owns the rights to these particular Godzilla films, it is obvious that this is not a legitimate release. I'm surprised it even made it to Amazon.com.

If you want inferior, public domain TV prints, that is probably what you're getting here. If you want DVD quality and legal versions of these films, get the Classic Media discs.

1 out of 5 stars ??????????????????????.......2007-06-30

Not to criticize this latest edition to the Godzilla series (I wouldn't know what to review), but how can Amazon expect a customer to pre-order this dvd when there is absolutely no product detail other than the fact that there are 2 discs, the running time is 400 minutes, and it's being released in July? NOT A GOOD IDEA, AMAZON! ULTIMATE ERROR!

2 out of 5 stars why the american godzilla why why!?!?.......2004-08-25

this set would be great if only they released it as the three new dvds coming out. but instead what you get is two good dvds and one bad dvd that you may even already own. if they had released this as a set of all three of the new dvds i probably would have gotten it but its not so i am not going to buy this. if you want these three movies than buy the five disc set with these three the other new dvd and a new godzilla 2000 special edition with the japanese version included. although that should just be a four disc set, but i wont get into that here. don't buy this unless you are a insane fan and must buy all three dvd sets just for the boxes.

5 out of 5 stars Six genuine Zillas for the price of two.......2000-10-18

Yep you get six that is six Zillas for the price of two. These are genuine Zillas not that graphics stuff. Broaden your horizons with windscreen. Warning you might learn to bellow and stomp, but you won't learn Japanese. Anyway this is still fun. DVDs do not ware out in theory. So this may be your last major Zilla purchase. You can add odd ones later. When does Rodan get a collection?

5 out of 5 stars Great collection of Godzilla movies.......2000-09-16

This is a must-have for any serious Godzilla movie lover. I hope they hurry and release Godzilla 2000 [English region 1] on DVD, as well as all the other Godzilla movies that they have yet to release on DVD in the USA. King Kong vs. Godzilla and Godzilla vs. Destroyah [aka Destroyer] are among the best - but those don't come in this set. Still, these movies in this set are a must-have for any serious collector or even hobbiest. Godzilla rules! [Not the 1998 one though! ]

5 out of 5 stars A must for all fans of Godzilla.......2000-03-17

Not very much to say, but this collection is in my opinion an absolute must for all fans of the 'original' Godzilla. The DVD set is a very good compilation of Godzilla movies spanning nearly two decades including several 'all time classics'. Starting from the very first one from 1956 going to 1969 this collection gives a very nice overview of the work of Honda. Quality of the DVDs is very good in respect to the old movies. I was a little bit disappointed by 'The art of illusion'. Nothing about the making of Godzilla but nevertheless interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Great movies.......1999-10-31

these are some of the best old scifi movies i've seen. i love these movies and recommend them
