Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "Elliott & Blake made a great team ~ Red Ryder & L'il Beaver.......2004-09-23

This sixth volume in the Red Ryder Double Feature gives the assignments to the great B-Western film director R.G. Springsteen and the screen writing task is from Earle Snell, another veteran from the Republic Pictures staff ~ both features are just under an hour, but what an hour each one brings to the big screen...hold on to your hats (cowboy hats, that is) and we'll travel down that dusty trail together.

First up is "Conquest of Cheyenne" (1946/B&W/54 mins), featuring William Elliott as Red Ryder, Bobby Blake as Little Beaver and Alice Fleming as the Duchess (Reds Aunt), Peggy Stewart as Cheyenne Jackon, Jay Kirby as Tom Dean (Wildcatter), Milton Kibbee as Tuttle the town banker, Tom London, Emmett Lynn, Jack Kirk, Jack Rockwell and Kenne Duncan ~ this was the 16th film in the series with another plot of oil on a ranch...looks like some slick villiany is afoot to drive the good people off their range and the villains who want it for themselves ~ this story originated from Bert Horswell and Joseph F. Poland that was chuck full of action, adventure and plenty of fights for the ace stuntmen ~ looks like it's time for Red Ryder (Elliott) and his horse Thunder to go into action.

Second on this double bill is "Sun Valley Cyclone" (1946/B&W/54 mins), again Elliott, Blake and Fleming star, with a gang of horse thieves is the plot, involving some very savory characters, such as Tom London, Roy Barcroft (King of the Badmen) was so good at being Bad! ~ on the same bill is Ed Cassidy as Teddy Roosevelt who with his Rough Riders is looking for some good mounts ~ it's up to Red Ryder and Little Beaver to see they all meet with his approval ~ director R.G. Springsteen takes this story of how Red was given Thunder by Teddy Roosevelt in an even swap, during which Thunder is branded as a killer horse ~ watch the stuntwork of Republic's best in the business.

There is no doubt in anyone's mind that Gordon Elliott (1903-1965) from Pattonsburg, Mo, later known at William "Wild Bill" Elliott (the Peaceable Man) was the best Red Ryder on the big screen ~ he got the name of "Wild Bill" after starring in a Columbia serial "The Great Adventurers of Wild Bill Hickok" back in 1938, went on to make a multitude of westerns during the '40s and '50s ~ it was then Republic Studios was looking for a star to be featured in Fred Harman's Red Ryder comic strip series coming alive and on the big screen ~ it's no small wonder that William Elliott's name was at the top of the list ~ working with the top directors of the day Howard P. Bretherton, Spencer Gordon Bennett, Joseph Kane, Wallace A. Grissell, Leslie Selander and R.G. Springsteen all under Republic Pictures banner.

RED RYDER SERIES:
1. Marshal of Reno (1944)
2. The San Antonio Kid (1944)
3. Vigilantes of Dodge City (1944)
4. Sheriff of Las Vegas (1944)

Description

Originally produced by Republic Pictures, the Red Ryder movies were based on the character created by Fred Harman for his newspaper comic strip, which ran from 1938 to 1964. Legends has it that Red Ryder and his faithful sidekick Little Beaver would go wherever needed, to defend the innocent, bring crooks to justice and restore the peace. There's plenty of double-barreled action in this double-feature starring Allan "Rocky" Lane as the Red Ryder and Bobby Blake as Little Beaver. In the first part of our double-bill, Stagecoach To Denver, villains are prepared to kill a child that stands in the way of their money unless Red Ryder can stop them. This is Lane's second outing as the Red Ryder. In the second film, Vigilantes Of Boomtown, Red Ryder is kidnapped when he is mistaken for a prizefighter training for a championship fight in Carson City. Eventually he is able to escape and foil the plans of the gang of outlaws intent on looting the town's people. Bonus Features: Interview of Peggy Stewart from VCI archives| Photo Gallery of Posters and Comic Book Art| Previews of other VCI Classic Westerns| Actor Bios| Scene Selection. 5 out of 5 stars "Allan "Rocky" Lane as Red Ryder ~ Republic Pictures".......2004-09-10

On this second volume of Fred Harman's character from his comic strip "Red Ryder Double Feature" starring Allan Lane as Red Ryder (replacing Wild Bill Elliott) and Bobby Blake (Little Beaver) both were filmed and released by Republic/Sidney Picker Productions ~ directed by R.G. Springsteen in 1946 with screenplays by Earle Snell ~ Lane starred in seven Ryder series, with taut action and well staged fisticuffs between lane and villainous Roy Barcroft.

Opening oat eater is "Stagecoach To Denver" (56 mins-B/W-1946), featuring beautiful Peggy Stewart (Republic Studios leading lady), Martha Wentworth as the Duchess (Red's Aunt), Edward Cassidy as Commissioner Felton, Bobby Hyatt as Dickie Ray who needs an operation from a stagecoach collision, Tom Chatterton as Doc Kimball who will perform the surgery. Emmett Lynn as Coonskin, George Chesebro as Blackie Grubb, Edmund Cobb as Duke, Ted Adam as the not to trusting bad Sheriff, Forrest Taylor as Matt Disher...but all is not going smoothly when our favorite "Bad Guy" Roy Barcroft as Big Bill Lambert enters the picture and his scheme is pure evil (heh, heh, heh)...but never fear in his second Red Ryder Film, Allan "Rocky" Lane will save the day and lock up all the villains and the rest of the Republic stock company in the hoose-gow!

Second is an above average outing "Vigilantes of Boom Town" (54 mins-B/W-1946), featuring our favorite leading lady Peggy Stewart as Molly McVey, George Turner as legendary boxer "Gentleman Jim" Corbett, Roscoe Karns as his manager Billy Delaney, John Dehner (Paladin of radio "Have Gun Will Travel" fame) as Bob Fitzsimmons in a title bout in the state of Nevada in Carson City, George Chesbro as Dink, Eark Hodgins as the Governor of Nevada, Ted Adams as the town sheriff, George Lloyd as a hired hand. Bobby Barber as Corbett's second and of course the "King of the Badmen" alias Mr. Roy Barcroft (real name Howard H. Ravencroft) who never ever disappoints his many fans for all the "boo's & hisses" that will come in the last reel ~ must not leave out the veteran stunt-men and women who bring much of the action, adventure and old west to life through tight fight fisted choreography and galloping chase scenes mixed with "pure excitement" on the big screen.

5 out of 5 stars "rode the dusty trails many times with Red Ryder".......2005-04-10

There is no doubt in anyone's mind that Gordon Elliott (6/15/1903-11/26/1965) from Pattonsburg, Mo, later known at William "Wild Bill" Elliott (the Peaceable Man) was the best Red Ryder on the big screen...Elliott got the name of "Wild Bill" after starring in a Columbia serial "The Great Adventurers of Wild Bill Hickok" back in 1938, went on to make a multitude of westerns during the '40s and '50s...it was then Republic Studios was looking for a star to be featured in Fred Harman's Red Ryder comic strip series coming alive and on the big screen...it's no small wonder that William Elliott's name was at the top of the list...working with the top directors of the day Howard P. Bretherton, Spencer Gordon Bennett, Joseph Kane, Wallace A. Grissell, Leslie Selander and R.G. Springsteen all under Republic Pictures banner.

First up is "GREAT STAGECOACH ROBBERY" (1945-B&W-56 mins), featuring William Elliott as Red Ryder, Bobby Blake as Little Beaver, Alice Fleming as the Duchess (Reds Aunt), Don Costello (Jed Quinlan-the villain...boo & hiss), Francis McDonald (Con Hollister), John James (Billy Hollister), Sylvia Arslan (Boots Hollister)...Hollister decides to return the $150,000 stolen in a stagecoach holdup previously...Jed Quinlan is the gang leader and enlists Con's hot headed young son, Billy (John James), to rob the incoming stage...Ryder comes upon the holdup and Con Hollister recognizes his son as one of the outlaws...'Boots' Hollister, Con's little girl is shot and killed by Quinlan...Con suspects Red of the dastardly deed...time for Red and his horse Thunder to go into action.

Second on this double bill is "PHANTOM OF THE PLAINS" (1945-B&W-56 mins), as Red Ryder (William "Wild Bill" Elliott) and Little Beaver (Bobby Blake) return to Blue Springs as the Duchess (Alice Fleming), is going to sell her stagecoach line and marry Fancy Charlie who is posing as an English gentleman Talbot Champneys (Ian Keith), a plot of marrying rich women and doing away with them for their fortune... Red becomes suspicious and it's up to him and Little Beaver to save the day...director Leslie Selander takes several turns in this delightful story, all of which involve the stuntwork of Republic's best in the business.

Special Features are a photo gallery, B-Western Promo, Adventures of Red Ryder Serial Chapters #3 & 4, Actor Bios on Wild Bill Elliott and Bobby Blake, Rocky Allan Lane Promo on his Red Ryder Double Features...the bonus features are a plus for any Western collection that is worth it's salt.

4 out of 5 stars I'm a Peaceable Man !.......2005-02-08

From the 30s to the early 50s, a number of Hollywood studios turned out hour-long "B" westerns for kids going to Saturday matinee shows at the local theatre. No studio was more active than Republic Pictures, and adapting comic strip hero, Red Ryder, and his young Native American sidekick, Little Beaver, for the silver screen was inevitable.

During the 40s, four actors played Red Ryder, at different times--Donald "Red" Barry ( only in the serial ), Allan Lane, William "Wild Bill" Elliott and Jim Bannon.
For this fan at least, Elliott was the best. In fairness, Allan Lane soon made another series for Republic as "Rocky" Lane which was terrific. While he did not resemble the comic-book character, Wild Bill seemed a natural as Red Ryder--he was an excellent horseman, fine in action scenes, tough when necessary, humourous on occasion and had a good rapport with Little Beaver, played by Bobby Blake. Yes indeed--Bobby did grow up to be actor Robert Blake !

By the way, "I'm a peaceable man" was Elliott's catch-phrase--usually just before some bad guy got pounded all over a saloon !
These movies were tightly-plotted, well-acted by Republic's stable of contract players, and provided audiences with plenty of high-speed, hard-hitting, cliff-hanging action. The two Red Ryder features on this disc ( Volume 7 ) were made in 1945, and are :--

Great Stagecoach Robbery. An old outlaw ( Francis MacDonald ) is released from jail after serving five years for robbery. Wanting to "go straight", he wishes to return the stolen money to the rightful owners, but his old gang-mates have much less honourable ideas. To increase the pressure on the old man, they have recruited his hot-headed son ( John James ) to help them. The irony here is that the one man who can help him is the man who sent him to jail in the first place--Red Ryder.

Phantom of the Plains. Red and Beaver arrive in town to find that Red's aunt--the Duchess ( series regular Alice Fleming )--has been swept off her feet by an "English lord", and is planning to marry him and run off to his castle in England. Of course, she is selling her possessions so that she can take all her money to enjoy life "at court" in London. Red soon realises that this "lord" ( Ian Keith, in a wonderful, hammy, evil performance )is a phony, as is his "French maid" ( Virginia Christine ). Two local thugs ( William Haade and Bud Geary ) soon recognize his "lordship" as "Fancy Charlie",an American confidence trickster, who likes to "carve up widows for their dough"--they want a "slice of the pie". The Duchess will not listen to Red's suspicions, and, of course, he and Little Beaver have to come to the rescue. The second half of "Phantom" is one of the most exciting in the history of "B" westerns.

Considering the price, I found the quality of the full-screen, black and white image, to be lacking--there are a lot of "speckles", a few scene jumps and general wear and tear. The films are still very watchable though.

Notwithstanding the picture quality, the Red Ryder movies with Bill Elliott were among the most entertaining "B" westerns ever produced. He made 16 in all. If you are nostalgic for a time when children's films were innocent fun, but still created a lot of excitement, saddle up with Red and Little Beaver--I think you'll enjoy the ride !

On this first Ryder B-Western "Colorado Pioneers" (1945-B&W-54 mins), the plot summary is about a couple of bad boys in the big city, Freddy Chapman and Billy Cummings have taken the wrong path of crime, with the help of Roy Barcroft (King of the Badmen) who always looks for the easy way to make a buck ~ never fear Red Ryder (Elliott) and Little Beaver (Blake) come up with the idea to rehabilitate the boys on the Ryder ranch ~ tune in and see if the Ryder family can turn the boys from the dark side to the side of good and ranch life.

The second film on this double bill is "Wagon Wheels Westward" (1945-B&W-56 mins), a theme that's been used in previous B-Westerns, wagon train of settlers arrive in a ghost town that is unknowingly headquarters for a gang of outlaws ~ what would a Ryder Western be without Roy Barcroft (King of the Badmen) ~ Barcroft is the leader of a group of henchmen working a con game against innocent homesteaders ~ another plot surfaces with Linda Stirling trying to hold off George J. Lewis (both actors appeared in "The Tiger Woman"-serial 1944) who wants to tell her husband Jay Kirby (all three actors appeared in "Zorro's Black Whip"-serial 1944) about Stirling's dark past ~ Republic's stock ace stuntmen come up with some of the best fight scenes ever caught on film ~ great film directing from R.G. Springsteen and entertaining screenplays by Earle Snell both top notch Republic Pictures staff personnel ~ Elliott as usual is outstanding as Ryder, with some hard riding segments on his horse Thunder, displaying Wild Bill's signature style.

There's plenty of double-barreled action in this double-feature starring Wild Bill Elliott as the Red Ryder and Bobby Blake as Little Beaver. In the first part of our double-bill, San Antonio Kid (1944), greedy outlaws in pursuit of the coveted "black gold," frighten local ranchers into leaving their homesteads in order that they might buy up all the valuable land. Red Ryder comes to their aid. In the second half of the double-bill, Cheyenne Wildcat (1947), Red Ryder is the unwilling object-of-desire caught between the love of two different ladies, but he still finds the time to outwit a gang of ornery outlaws. Bonus Features: Photo Gallery of Posters and Comic Book Art| Actor Bios| Original Adventures of Red Ryder Serial Trailer| Scene Selection. Specs: DVD5; Dolby Digital Mono; 108 minutes; B&W; 1.33.1 Aspect Ratio; MPAA - NR; Year - 1944 & 1947; SRP - $19.99.

5 out of 5 stars Little Don Plays Big Red.......2006-01-13

This is yet another adaptation of a popular comic strip. Yours truly regularly read Red Ryder comic books as a teen, and this is worthy translation. Don Barry is very good in the title role, although he really doesn't fit the comic book look of Red Ryder--Red is a tall gangly guy, and Barry is very short. It's comical (pun intended) to see him do a little hop when he mounts his horse in order to be able to jump up that high! Directors Witney and English couldn't stand working with Barry and his oversize ego (they called him "the midget"); apparently he constantly wanted to change things and write his own lines. Despite this, the relationship works very well indeed on the screen. Probably they gave him that huge hat to make him look taller.

Tommy Cook plays Red's buddy Little Beaver, and he does well with the silly "Indian lingo" lines they gave him. Noah Beery ("Overland Mail", "Zorro Rides Again") is an all-time favorite Western bad-guy, and William Farnum helps out. Hal Taliaferro, seen in lots of serials, is Red's pal Cherokee, and Maude Pierce Allen is terrific as Red's aunt, the Duchess. The indefatigible Davy Sharpe does the stunt work for Barry.

5 out of 5 stars "Red Ryder B-Western Series ... Wild Bill Elliott as Red Ryder ... VCI Home Video" .......2004-09-12

There is no doubt in anyone's mind that Gordon Elliott (6/15/1903 - 11/26/1965) from Pattonsburg, Mo, later known at William "Wild Bill" Elliott (the Peaceable Man) was the best Red Ryder on the big screen ~ he got the name of "Wild Bill" after starring in a Columbia serial "The Great Adventurers of Wild Bill Hickok" back in 1938, went on to make a multitude of westerns during the '40s and '50s ~ it was then Republic Studios was looking for a star to be featured in Fred Harman's Red Ryder comic strip series coming alive and on the big screen ~ it's no small wonder that William Elliott's name was at the top of the list ~ working with the top directors of the day Howard P. Bretherton, Spencer Gordon Bennett, Joseph Kane, Wallace A. Grissell, Leslie Selander and R.G. Springsteen all under Republic Pictures banner.

First up is "The San Antonio Kid" (1944-B&W-59 mins), featuring William Elliott as Red Ryder, Bobby Blake as Little Beaver, Alice Fleming as the Duchess (Reds Aunt), Duncan Renaldo (later to become The Cisco Kid, Robin Hood of the Old West) as Johnny Bennett (the San Antonio Kid), Glenn Strange as Ace Hanlon, LeRoy Mason as Walter Garfield, Linda Stirling (of Republic Serial fame) as Ann Taylor and Jack Kirk as Ben Taylor...with a cattle car full of Republics ace stuntmen Yakima Canutt (king of the stunt department), Henry Wills and Tom Steele (Ryder's stunt double) ~ plenty of action to go around ~ oil is discovered and it looks like some slick villainy is afoot to drive the Taylor's and neighboring ranchers off their land ~ time for Red and his horse Thunder to go into action.

Second on this double bill is "Cheyenne Wildcat" (1944-B&W-54 mins), again Elliott, Blake and Fleming star in a bank fraud involving some very savory characters, such as Tom London, Roy Barcroft (King of the Badmen) was so good at being Bad! ~ on the same bill is Peggy Stewart as the daughter of an honest deceased banker who was shot on the stage for mysterious reasons ~ it's up to Red Ryder and Little Beaver to see beyond such treachery ~ director Leslie Selander takes several turns in this delightful story, all of which involve the stuntwork of Republic's best in the business.

5 out of 5 stars 1940's Red Ryder and Little Beaver Volume 1, come to DVD!.......2002-11-08

Many now only relate to "Red Ryder's Genuine Carbine Action Two-Hundred Shot Lightning Loader Range Model Air Rifle" made famous in the 1983 Christmas movie, "A Christmas Story". This story was about a 10 year old boys obsession with getting Red Ryder's air rifle for Christmas.

Well now, we can all see this famous no-nonsense cowboy and his little sidekick Indian boy, Little Beaver in action. This was a perfect pair & their complete honorable taming of the west.

Red Ryder & Little Beaver adventures dominated the comic strips in the 1930's - 1950's. Late in the 30's REd Ryder came to the screen in a 12 action packed episode serial. Pretty good stuff and a sample coming attraction of this early Red Ryder serial is included on this double feature DVD.

The 1940's Red Ryder introduced the most popular Red Ryder with Wild Bill Elliot and Robert Blake an Little Beaver. This duo went on to make over a dozen Red Ryder movies in the 40's.
This Double Feature remastered DVD Full Screen Black/White includes 2 of thier movies.

An Antonio Kid (1944 / 52 minutes) - greedy outlaws pursuit of the coveted "Black Gold" by terrorizing ranchers.

Cheyenne Wildcat (1947 / 50 minutes) - Red becomes the object of desire of 2 ladies while he & Lil' Beaver pursue outlaws.

This is wholesome fun family entertainment. Red & Lil' Beaver compliment each other and there is genuine onscreen friendship chemistry between them. This is fun stuff. Nice addition to the old western DVD library. Also included is a movie billboard & comic strip montage extra.

Also, now we see why Ralphie Parker from "A Christmas Story" obsessed over Red Ryder!!! Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Red Ryder-Memories.......2002-08-13

These two western "B" movies from the 40's are typical of the westerns of the war years. The second movie, "Cheyene Wildcat" is the best of the Elliott "Ryder" movies. A big plus is Robert Blake (Baretta) playing Little Beaver! Another big plus, is Roy Barcroft as the mean villian. As with all the old movies coming out in DVD, the quality is very good.
If you are over 60 you'll enjoy the memory-if you are under 60 you get to see a time when good triumphed over evil!

4 out of 5 stars ADVENTURES OF RED RYDER.......2002-05-26

I don`t believe this one ever got to the U.K. when i was riding the range at Saturday cinema. One word. Wonderful. My memories of serials in the early 50`s here in U.K. were Blackhawk. Possibly the best ever. Jungle Girl, Captain Video,SirLancelot,Superman, and White Eagle. Now at almost 60 years old to be able to relive those happy years once again with a serial like Red Ryder plus a TV episode with one of my favorite cowboys Rocky Lane is beyond words. The D V D transfer is very good its a treat to be able to see a good quality picture at last. I`ve had enough of poor quality slow speed video copy`s and as for some of the material some people get away with on the net. I urge you forget the rubbish and go for D V D and make Red Ryder your first choice. Come on company`s lets have some more...
