Made in 1964, but set in 12th-century England, this is the fact-based story of Henry II (Peter O'Toole) and his dear friend, the Archbishop of Canterbury (Richard Burton). When the king appoints his former drinking buddy to the high religious office, he believes he has placed an ally into power. Instead, he learns that Thomas very much takes his job to heart, prompting Henry to ask that fateful question--"Will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest?"

This won an Academy Award for Best Screenplay, and it is a strong example of finely tuned performances--both leading men received Academy Award nominations for their roles. There is much passion and rage on the screen, but the beauty of their performances is that we always know that love is there as well. The film, shot on location in England, is also visually appealing. Trivia buffs may be interested to know that Peter O'Toole played Henry II four years later in The Lion in Winter. --Rochelle O'Gorman

On the DVD

The primary bonus feature is a treat: a feature-length commentary by Peter O'Toole, accompanied by a moderator. With only occasional gaps of silence, the still sharp and well-spoken O'Toole recalls the making of the film, how he didn't research the historical King Henry ("The author has made the character; that's his job. My job is to play it."), and his memories of Richard Burton, both personal ("We found that we both enjoyed rugby, we both enjoyed songs, and we both enjoyed drinking, and got along very well.") and professional ("he had an astonishing presence on the stage"). There are also two archival interviews with Burton from 1967 and 1977 (26 minutes total), in which he doesn't discuss Becket, but he does say a lot about his life on stage, he recites some lines, and speaks candidly about his drinking problem.

Don't skip over the interviews with the film's editor Anne Coates and composer Laurence Rosenthal. Coates (7 minutes) has some good stories, and Rosenthal (12 minutes) discusses the influences on his Oscar-nominated score and how he had to teach Gregorian chant to Burton ("He was one of these people whom you really can't teach anything. He had this characteristic that you can only remind him of something he already knows. But he didn't know how to sing Gregorian chant."). In addition to a photo gallery and the four-and-a-half-minute theatrical trailer, MPI's long-delayed DVD looks better than many major-studio classics. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2007-09-14

I'm so glad this one's finally on DVD. What awesome performances! Watch it together with "The Lion in Winter". A vast and sweeping epic.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best performances I have ever seen.......2007-09-10

It is hard to believe this is the same guy that played the somewhat peculiar Lawrence of Arabia, which is one of my favorite movies. Richard Burton was good in this movie, don't get me wrong, but I was blown away by O'Toole. He is mesmerizing in practically every scene and completely dominates the screen and the movie. I do not own the DVD, I actually saw it on AMC, where I learned that O'Toole was only 32 years old when he filmed this movie...Wow!!

I am not a history buff so I cannot comment on the historical accuracy of this movie, but I can comment and will applaud what I have to say is one of the best performances I have seen. The scenes with O'Toole are somewhat reminiscent of a stage play where pure acting is required...and he delivers an incredibly powerful performance.

The movie is very entertaining, the dialogue is great, and Geilgud's small part is very good. I thought the costumes, scenery and setting were very well done. I was thoroughly pleased with this movie.

I will now be looking for more O'Toole movies in the hopes they are half as good as this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie... great extras.......2007-09-05

Two Richard Burton interviews from two different eras, the flyer and advertising art from the film... great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Becket Review.......2007-08-29

A Great film. Great quality. I did not have to clean this disc to get it to work right.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant and Long Overdue.......2007-08-28

Becket sits as a classic, historical parrable of conscience and character, in the same genre as "A Man For All Seasons". Richard Burton (as the title character) and Peter O'Toole (as Henry II) lend marvelous weight to their characters. Burton, the friend who puts moral conscience and religious belief above King and Country. O'Toole, a monarch driven by dynasty is ever mindful of Becket's influence... both as a personal friend and as the conscious of the kingdom. Frustrated, the king's knights take literally Henry's loose wish to be rid of the meddlesome priest. Becket pays with his life but, ultimately Henry with his soul. Based on historical fact, Becket is not a swashbuckler but a more thoughtful film considering the primacy of church v. state. It is well deserving two hours and long overdue on DVD.

Based on Patrick Suskind's novel about a serial killer who hunts victims with his superhuman sense of smell, Perfume: Story of a Murderer is a florid, grisly portrayal of this historical drama set in 18th century France. Jean-Baptiste Grunuis (Ben Whishaw) is born under his mother's table at the fish market, onto a pile of muddy fish guts, establishing from the beginning his repulsion for putrid scents. A childhood of neglect and, later, a job at a tannery, encourage Jean-Baptiste to develop his olfactory sense rather than his verbal skills, so that an opportunity to prove his worth to Parisian perfumist, Giuseppe Baldini (Dustin Hoffman), results in his immediate hire into a promising new career. His successes in perfume mixing are negated by a blinding obsession for capturing the sublime beauty of human soul, which in his twisted logic requires the killing of young women to reduce their body fats to essential oils for the ultimate, cannibalized eau de parfum. An omniscient narrator tells the story with much sympathy for Jean-Baptiste's perverted psychology, making it, often, too obvious that his need for love justifies his murderous desire to capture misguided sexual attractions in a vile. Continuous close-ups of Grunius's nose, countered by close-ups of the places and objects he smells, enhance the viewer's understanding of his sensitivity. Repeated comparisons are made between the killer and dogs who aid, then expose his sick experimentation. The settings are fascinating, especially Baldini's perfumery and some later scenes in enflorage factories outside Provence. Whishaw's and Hoffman's performances are both grand. But Perfume unnecessarily spells out Jean-Baptiste's psychosis, squelching any chance for metaphor. This is unfortunate, considering the story's paradoxical nature. As this crude hunter navigates his way through a world of utmost delicacy, one craves ambiguity rather than explanation. --Trinie Dalton

4 out of 5 stars Good movie with an unexpected ending.......2007-09-14

i was really surprised with the scenario of the movie, very realistic, i never saw something like that in other movies...
really cool movie

1 out of 5 stars Great at first, then spiraled downward.......2007-09-11

At first I thought this movie was so original and imaginative. It is filmed beautifully. The clothing and scenery. The colors. The music. I enjoyed the narration. But you keep waiting for Ben Wishaw's character Jean-Baptiste to get interesting. He is emotionless. As another reviewer said you almost don't care what happens to any of the characters. (Although I thought Alan Rickman and Dustin Hoffman did a fine job with their smaller roles). Especially Jean-Baptiste. But he's so irritating with his lack of personality or emotion that I really disliked him. Stop reading here is you don't want to read a spoiler. The main plot twist is that Jean-Baptiste wants to get his hands on the beautiful Laura and so since he is the villian of the story you hope that he will, of course, not kill her like all the other girls. And even when he gets into her room you hope, somehow she will escape. You hope that finally one of the girls will be able to defend themselves... but no, that would have actually given the movie a little suspense. He killed any chance of that when he killed her. But I kept thinking that the movie might improve with an interesting twist of an ending. There is a fine line between interesting and just ridiculous. Some people loved this entire movie including the ending. I felt the ending became so bizarre and strange that it was unpleasant to watch. It was so unfufilling and stupid that I have to give this movie 1 star, despite it's promising beginning. Maybe, as another reviewer said, the book is great. I haven't read the book. But I hated this movie. Unless you enjoy period movies, enjoy great costumes or really, really bizarre movies I recommend renting this movie - like if you have Netflix and you won't be wasting $5 to watch it. If you want to see a good movie with interesting characters, suspense and mystery see the Illusionist instead.

1 out of 5 stars If you loved the book, skip the film!.......2007-09-09

The book was fabulous. The film adaptation is horrid. Where to begin? Dustin Hoffman is a fine actor, but nothing of his ability and screen power come thru in this film. Ben Whishaw? Forget it. His performance is bland and boring, his performance lacking any emotion or inspiration. You simply don't care about him as a character. In fact, that is the primary fault of the entire film. Character development is so poor that you simply don't care what happens to anyone in the film.

Alan Rickman, as usual, delivers a strong screen presence, but his role is so small that he cannot possibly save the film. John Hurt with his characteristic voice also does a fine job of narrating the film.

Perfume is an excellent novel - a unique, well-developed story. Definitely read the book! But the film is a real stinker (pun intended).

2 out of 5 stars Ridiculous movie.......2007-09-08

And again, everyone loves the emperor's clothes and how pretty all the colors are. Dustin Hoffman's career is circling down the drain much in the same manner that Robert De Niro's is, by showing up in films like this that are so utterly undeserving of his talent. If this is esteemed as a work of vision and depth, then the fix is truly in and the moviegoing public has been broken on the wheel of mediocrity- happily ingesting any substandard, contemptible feed Hollywood wishes to slop into the entertainment trough. Just because someone can recreate the streets of Paris or can CGI color a few fruits and hairdos to convey beauty and richness of experience doesn't mean that we should all clap and be awestruck. This movie is meaningless and unbelievable, a mockery of the period piece, the detective thriller, the psychosexual drama, the tortured genius expose, or any other genre it unintentionally parodies.

In politics, some say we get the government we deserve. By heaping praise on hollow window dressing like "Perfume", it looks like we will all continue to get the movies we deserve. Giving further life to this box office bomb via rentals or DVD sales is simply irresponsible. I bet the author of the book had to be restrained from going into the lot when this was filming, hoping he could find the screenwriter and sock him(and I say 'him' because I'm having trouble with the idea that an intelligent woman would countenance abetting the creation of such mindless exploitation of the fairer sex) in the jaw.

4 out of 5 stars Original And, Despite The Ending, I Found It Fascinating.......2007-09-05

Wow, this is really a bizarre story with an ending that probably will turn off 98 percent of viewers who stick with this two hours, 147-minute film. I'm not sure what to make of it, other than totally understanding if people are left unsatisfied after watching this movie. As I said, I'm not sure how to interpret it as I just finished it minutes ago. It leaves you almost stunned.

Rather than judging that finale or divulging it, let me just comment on the first two hours of the film, which I found utterly fascinating. If I wasn't such an admirer of photography, art and special-effects, I doubt I would have found the movie so appealing because the story is "not for everyone." However, thanks to stunning French city and countryside scenery, 18th century period and beautiful women it enhanced the story to me. Yet, regardless of the visual treats, the story was so unusual it still would have held my attention.

Ben Wishaw, who plays the lead character "Jean-Baptist Grenouille, has a face that is perfect for this role. His emaciated body, which survived a brutal childhood existence from the moment he was born also makes his character all the more credible. The looks of shock and awe on this man's face throughout the picture also add to his believability. He was mesmerizing with his haunting expressions. Dustin Hoffman and Alan Rickman provide "name" actors the film but it's Wishaw's movie, all the way.

I can only recommend this movie to those who share similar interests in cinematography and who like a "different" story but there are so many things in here - especially the ending - that could offend so many people, I would be hesitant to recommend this to the general viewer.

With its campy combination of lightweight adventure and Spandex disco chic, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century is a nostalgic throwback to post-Star Wars opportunism. Series co-creator Glen A. Larson was incapable of originality, and former soap star Gil Gerard (in the title role) was a bland incarnation of the comic-strip hero, so the much-anticipated series premiered on September 20, 1979, with serious disadvantages. Although the two-hour pilot "Awakening" had tested successfully as a theatrical release, Gerard and the show's producers could never agree on a stable tone for the series, which presents Capt. William "Buck" Rogers as a jovial space cowboy who is accidentally time-warped from 1987 to 2491. Earth is engaged in interplanetary war following a global holocaust, and Buck's piloting skills make him an ideal starfighter recruit for the Earth Defense Directorate, where his closest colleagues are Dr. Huer (Tim O'Connor), squadron leader Col. Wilma Deering (former model Erin Gray, looking oh-so-foxy), the wisecracking robot Twiki (voiced by cartoon legend Mel Blanc), and a portable computer-brain named Dr. Theopolis, who's carried by Twiki like oversized bling-bling.

The series struggled through an awkward first season, with routine plots elevated by decent special effects and noteworthy guest stars including Jamie Lee Curtis, ill-fated Playboy Playmate Dorothy Stratten (appearing, with her voice dubbed over, less than a year before her tragic murder), Batman alumnus Julie Newmar, Buster Crabbe (veteran of vintage Buck Rogers movie serials), and several others in a show that favored vamps and vixens over credible science fiction. A full-scale overhaul resulted in a disastrous second season, but devoted fans still gravitate to Hawk (Thom Christopher), the charismatic alien "birdman" who was introduced with new characters and a new, space-faring search for lost tribes from Earth (with echoes of Larson's own Battlestar Galactica). Behind-the-scenes squabbles continued, and by mid-season of 1981, NBC pulled the plug on a breezy, still-engaging series that suffered from uneasy chemistry and never realized its full potential. Existing somewhere between Galactica and Lost in Space in the TV sci-fi food chain, this Buck--with a dearth of DVD extras--now functions as a cheesy stroll down memory lane. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Alas, no added features.......2007-09-15

Clearly this set will only interest you if you liked the series in the first place -- and it's certainly a nice warm bath of nostalgia for those of us who loved it, even if, as an adult, the plots are pretty weak and the 2490s look painfully like the 1970s. (Then again, who's to say they won't?)

My one complaint is that there are no special features: no "making of" shorts, no commentary tracks, no deleted scenes, nothing.

For example: Disk #1 starts with the theatrical release movie, not the TV pilot. The TV version had a few extra scenes, such as a segue that set up the ongoing series (including premises that are referenced in later episodes). It would have been nice to have those scenes tacked onto the end as an option.

The Battlestar Galactica boxed set managed to include things like this, even whole subplots that got left on the cutting room floor. Presumably Buck Rogers' cult following is too small and it wasn't worth the effort and expense. Still, would've been nice.

4 out of 5 stars Buck Rogers in the Nineteen-Seventies.......2007-07-24

Well, after watching the old credits on YouTube, I decided I had to break down and buy the DVDs. Happily, I was not disappointed. The price is great, and the series is great fun. Cheesy, campy, blissfully un-self conscious fun. Gil Gerard hits all the right notes as Buck Rogers, and Erin Gray ... well, nuff said. She's awesome, and her lovely hair is probably the best special effect on the show.

While I do love the new Battlestar Galactica, I do have to echo some of the sentiments expressed in other reviews. If you grew up in the seventies and eighties, sometimes there's just a part of you that wants to leave all the socio-political-economic commentary behind, jump in a spaceship, rescue Erin Gray, fight with ray guns, karate chop alien mutants, and have annoying robot sidekicks. If you're in that mood, Buck Rogers will serve you well.

Now I'm going to have to get Gil Gerard and Erin Gray to sign my box set at Dragoncon this year.

Minus one point for the lack of special features.

5 out of 5 stars I love this show!.......2007-07-23

This was always one of my favorite shows as a kid, and it is just as much fun to watch as an adult. This is a great addition to my DVD collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great Show, NOW, even greater price.......2007-07-21

What's with all the complaining about this dvd set. It's $24.99. This is a STEAL for what your getting. For those of who DON'T KNOW. This set has been out for 4-5 years already. It originally cost $89.99 and DIE HARD FANS paid that much for it. Like me. This set was made before commentaries where a big deal. So quit complaining and be happy the price has dropped to 1/4 of it's original price and just enjoy this great 80's Sci FI show.

5 out of 5 stars Science-Fiction interest.......2007-07-20

In viewing "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century", I can see the foundation that Gene Roddenbery used for his presentations of "Star Trek". Also possibly Steven Spielberg for "Star Wars".

All episodes have been very interesting.

3 out of 5 stars NOT THE COMPLEAT SEASON!!!.......2007-06-01

I love this show but they edited out way too much. Half the story is gone. I used to watch this when I was younger, never missed a show. Wish I had taped it. Good SciFi, wish it was still on the air. I cant belive they labled it the Complete Series! I am so disipointed.

5 out of 5 stars How GREAT to have this Finally come out.......2007-05-13

We were fans of the show longggg ago. We are so glad it has finally come to DVD. The only problem is that it makes me remember there was no real resolution to the whole thing. Maybe they need a movie :-)

5 out of 5 stars Brave New Pacifica!.......2007-02-22

It was about time! 13 years later I finally have a copy of every Earth2 episode to live with! It's a pity we'll never get a closure as Firefly fans did.

I loved this show: Great cast, strong environmental message, fabulous landscapes, an intringuing attempt of making scifi without (or mostly) technology, strong female characters (Debrah Farentino, who's now in Eureka, Jessica Steen, Rebecca Gayheart). Now I look at LOST and despite all the evident differences I think EARTH2 Could have been a great show, given the chance. What about Life before Eden Adance?, what about Devon's cure?. As I said there were endless opportunities never taken.

I wish there were more extras in it, comments, deleted scenes...I personally loved the Score, but I guess it's because the show was made before all the fancy DVDs we have now....but it's a fair good edition for a show which was never really forgotten.

A wonderful series is a shame that this series was cancelled.

4 out of 5 stars Left Me Wanting More.......2007-02-18

I ordered this DVD set, having never seen an entire episode. I only remembered seeing parts of two or three episodes when they were actually aired. I was recommended it by a friend, who'd watched every episode faithfully until the show was abruptly canceled. Bummer.

The series follows the Eden Advance team, a group of colonists headed by Devon Adair, who (following a secret govenment plot to destroy their ship) crash land on the planet, losing most of their gear and passengers. A small group survives, and has to make a cross-continental trek to reach the intended landing site, in order to meet the main body of colonists, who are scheduled to arrive shortly. The series was abandoned mid-season in season 1.

I would have rated this item 5 stars, but the quality of the DVD encoding took away at least 1 1/2 stars. Since you can't give 1/2 star ratings, I rounded up. There were several times where the disk would freeze, there were a few spots that were horribly pixelated, and the sound got choppy. This usually was short-lived, however. The exception being that my disk set came with two disk 2s and no disk 3. One of the two duplicates actually was defective, so after two or three weeks of emails, got the publisher to send me a pre-paid envelope to return on of them in exchange for a disk 3. Obviously, I sent the defective one.

I've read several reviews where the reviewer talked about bad acting in the series. Honestly, I never saw this. The only exception was some of the acting by the two children in the series. Obviously, I expect child actors, especially 8 year olds, to have some issues with heavy emotionally-charged scenes. As far as the rest of the cast is concerned, there are some of the finest actors in Hollywood represented, e.g. Jessica Steen (Armageddon, CSI and more TV shows than I can list), and Clancy Brown (best known as the Kurgan from Highlander, also in The Guardian (2006), Starship Troopers, etc.).

After sitting down and watching the series (keeping in mind that it was made 12 years ago so many of the props look dated) the one thing I'm left with is this sense of wondering what happened to the Eden Advance crew. Did they make it to New Pacifica? Did Danziger (Clancy Brown) ever get together with Devon Adair (Debrah Farentino)? Did anyone ever slap that annoying Morgan (John Gegenhuber)? I think it says alot that I came to care about these people, even after only 'getting to know them' for half a season of episodes. I think that several characters (Morgan) were played so well that I really felt like I knew that person - and in Morgan's case, wanted to see him slapped around a bit. I think that says alot about the acting, and the writing of the screenplays.

I've seen fan fiction online where people have continued the storyline, but it's not the same. I'm saddened to say that this show hasn't had the same cult following that Firefly had, so it's not likely that a feature film will be made from the story, giving us a glimpse of what ever became of these poor souls trapped on a distant planet.

Amazon.com

The science fiction series Space Above and Beyond, which enjoyed a brief run in the 1995-96 season, was created by X-Files producers Glen Morgan and James Wong as a revision of the classic war series Combat!. Set in the not-too-distant future, Space Above and Beyond follows the adventures of five inexperienced Marines of the 58th Squadron, who are involved in a war against the Chigs, a race of aliens bent on conquering the Earth. Morgan and Wong gave their main characters intriguing personalities--Nathan West (Morgan Weisser) has joined the Marines to save a girlfriend captured by the aliens, while Rodney Rowland's Cooper is an artificially created human whose service is inspired by a desire to escape the violent prejudice he faces on Earth. The action and stories are gritty and dramatic, and put a fresh spin on traditional wartime stories--highlights include "The Enemy," in which the 58th is stranded behind enemy lines; "Toy Soldiers," in which West's younger brother is serving under a dangerously reckless lieutenant; and the two-part "If They Lay Us Down to Rest…" and "Tell Our Moms We Done Our Best," which brought the series to a close with the Earth on the verge of peace talks with the aliens as the military launches a perilous operation. Commentary by Morgan and Wong and the cast would have been welcome, especially if the plans for the unseen second season could've been revealed, but unfortunately, no supplemental features are included in this slickly produced, no-frills set. --Paul Gaita

5 out of 5 stars Just like I remember it!.......2007-08-23

Ok, so it is a little bit cheesier then I remember it, but it was made in the mid-90's, so the special effects are of that time... The show brings back great memories of when it was first on, and has continued to keep me entertained and hooked, just as it did when it was new! Awesome collection for anyone interested in Science Fiction space battles or space flight! I've had a very difficult time tracking this down, so act quickly to ensure picking up a copy!

3 out of 5 stars A little dissapointed.......2007-08-18

I only watched two episodes (okay one and a half) when this was on the air, I was pretty busy back then and taping shows for later viewing wasn't big on my list. The one full episode I watched I really liked so when I saw this out on DVD I decided to grab it.

After watching a few episodes I have to say I'm a little dissapointed. It's a little more corny than I recall and the stories are rather thin plotwise. Not bad but definately not great.

3 out of 5 stars Great premise but a poorly executed, mediocre series.......2007-08-09

I joined Blockbuster Online to watch the entire James Bond Series, and after I completed that mission, I decided that I wanted to complete this series. When Space first aried in 1995, I only saw the first few episodes and then went off to college and didn't get to watch the rest of the season. Now with DVD I finally had my chance. I just completed watching the entire series in sequence.

The first episode was a great start to the series. The premise was excellent: a marine squadron who flies starfighters and carriers, as well as does ground combat duty, for Earth forces waging war against a newly discovered alien race, with InVitros and Silicates in the mix. And throughout the series, I felt most of the actors were pretty good, except Rodney Rowland (Cooper Hawkes) - he was an aweful actor, and one of the producers even admitted it in an old issue of Starlog I still have. He was the obvious choice to play the InVitro squadmate, but wasn't really even good enough for that.

But a great start, premise, and some decent actors were not enough. Over the course of the series, the quality was very inconsistent from episode to episode. Some episodes were good ideas that were poorly written or produced (and acted in the case of Rodney Rowland). Some things just appeared in one lame episode and then were abandoned, like Damphousse's physic intuition. Some episodes didn't have any redeeming qualities at all.

Well, at least I can say I gave it a shot from start to finish. People can make up a lot of excuses for the show, and sure the show could have somewhat performed better if the TV factors were different. I am dissappointed that the main reason the series died is because it was mediocre at best. Sadly there isn't enough interest to revive/revamp this show in the form of a modern movie (with modern effects), or even another TV series.

But since the idea is great and the Chig War is left unresolved, I think the DVD series would make a great premise for a roleplaying game (table-top, pen, paper & dice). If that game came out then I would suggest the gamemaster watch the series to prepare for running the game. Otherwise, I can't reccommend this series.

5 out of 5 stars Concept...Above and Beyond.......2007-07-23

This was a Yule gift for my son. We watched this together when it was broadcast on TV. Looked fot it for years. Finally found it. Excellent sci-fi.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Series!.......2007-07-16

This was one of Fox's first good series that they canceled (Married with Children would probably be the first). This series was very well done and had a great, gritty feel to it. I loved space marines. It was like a TV series with Quake/Doom/Halo characters in it. It had a good concept and great story. The actors weren't that bad either.

One gripe I had about the set as a whole is the lackluster packaging job that Fox did on the DVDs. Fox didn't even spare the extra few cents to print extra DVDs, and instead printed DVDs double-sided. The inserts are lame too. The show had a huge cliff-hanger of an end to the first and only season. I guess we'll never know what happened with all those stories.

Otto Preminger's 1960 adaptation of Leon Uris's novel is a sprawling 220-minute tale of the founding of modern Israel, starring Paul Newman as a Resistance leader. The film works best as an example of Preminger's estimable skill with all levels of drama and action, but as a reflection upon history it is compromised by stereotypes, unpersuasive relationships, and a certain moral ambivalence about issues related to the subject. There are good and exciting sequences, however, particularly one involving an effort to break through a British blockade and get to the homeland. --Tom Keogh

Description

Inspired by Leon Uris' international bestseller, this "extraordinarily moving" (The New Republic) chronicle of the rebirth of a people and the establishment of a nation is the ultimate experience in human drama. Nominated* for three Academy Awards® and winner* for Best Score, Exodus is an "exciting, dramatic, scenic, panoramic and deeply moving" (New York Daily News) masterpiece. Ari Ben Canaan (Paul Newman), a commander of the Israeli underground, manages to lead 600 Jews from the detention camps of Cyprus onto a large freighter bound for Palestine. But British forces soon learn of his plan and insist that he turn back. Undaunted, Ari and his passengers refuse to give up, risking their lives for the greater cause of Israeli independence.

I have always enjoyed this movie ever since I saw it in the city of Melbourne, at the Esquire theatre about thirty eight years ago. There is only one fault I can find and that is the print,so I ask that it might be remastered its original 70mm negative and 5.1 digital sound and of course 16.9 enhanced screen. The current print is in 4.3 and letterbox and it does not suit my new widescreen t.v So how about it M.G.M
