Customer Reviews:
Choppy editing mars a fun flick.......2007-09-12
Tinto Brass' Caligula is a film with balls; both literally and figuratively. Loaded with over-the-top set design and egregious nudity, Caligula is often unfairly brushed off as an expensive porn flick. In fact, what seems agregious to us now might not even be a slight exaggeration as regards the Roman Empire in the early AD's. Apparently, this film is one of the more realistic accounts of the debauchery of the time. Indeed, the marketing does not shy away from this. The tagline read something along the lines of: "The only film to show the true side of Ancient Rome!" If the film's content is any indication, I would think so!
Caligula has 'cult' written all over it (as well as other 'c' words). This is not a great film, but it IS a great movie. Perfect to pop in in the middle of the night if you are bored, intoxicated, or both. As far as escapist fare goes, Caligula goes well. With the midnight-show dress-up aficionados, it would be just plain fun. Perhaps even a double feature with Rocky Horror?
The sets are outrageous but that's the point. Malcolm McDowell's acting job is surprisingly good, if a bit over the top (but who said that's a bad thing?). Peter O'Toole puts in a decent (albeit short-lived) performance as Tiberius.
My biggest qualm, however, with Caligula is the editing. The hardcore scenes are more than unnecessary and the fluidity of scenes and scene changes is almost incomprehensible at times. Blame Guccione for this; he locked Brass out of the editing room.
Overall I could not give Caligula anything higher than 3 stars out of 5, although I sometimes wish I could. 4 stars is 'Blow-Up' and 'Dirty Harry' territory, and I would feel uncomfortable having them share the glory with such infamy.
***/*****
Fun, over-the-top, visually stimulating (among other things), a good conversation piece, and a great time-capsule artifact.
Shock and Awe.......2007-08-28
If you thought HBO's depiction of ancient Rome was graphic and brutal Rome - The Complete First Two Seasons, then you obviously haven't seen Caligula.
Caligula leaves nothing for the imagination unless you're talking about some continuity issues and plot holes. Oh, the imagination fixes those just fine. But the scenes of love, incest, orgy, torture, rape, murder...they're there in all their glory...and I mean ALL their glory.
While the HBO series chronicled events in Rome circa 50 BC, Caligula is an adaptation of events circa 40 AD. The story is a bit discombobulated at times, but easy enough to follow.
Caligula (or, if you'd prefer, Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus) rises to power as Rome's third emperor. Writer/Producer and uncredited Director Bob Guccione Penthouse , not surprisingly, picked up on the writings that Caligula was an insane sex pervert and a cruel tyrant. Other historical writings that Caligula led Rome to major territorial expansion and architectural advancement were not included in this movie. No...that would have brought the...umm...mood down.
Helen Mirren stars as Caligula's queen. She's good at playing queen's, no? Coincidentally she won the 2007 Oscar and Globe for Best Actress by playing a queen The Queen . I can't imagine why the Academy passed her by in 1979's Caligula. There's plenty of other award winning talent in Caligula: You've got Malcolm McDowell A Clockwork Orange (Two-Disc Special Edition) , Peter O'Toole Lawrence of Arabia (Single Disc Edition) , and Sir John Gielgud Arthur just to name a few...well...that's actually all of the A-list.
But the surprising thing is that Caligula even had an A-list when the movie was less about acting and more about shock and awe. Sure, the good actors gave great performances. McDowell's Caligula is unforgettable; the surprising thing is that Guccione got this cast to even be in a movie that with any other actors you might have had to purchase this film in a dark DVD store on the corner of 38th Street and 8th Avenue in NYC.
The movie runs for 2 hours and 36 minutes. And if that ain't enough, the 2007 Imperial Edition gives you 2 extra disks of bonus stuff. According to Image Entertainment's July 2007 press release, The 3 disk Imperial Edition of Caligula comes with two versions: the important one being the unrated, uncensored theatrical version in a newly mastered high def transfer from recently uncovered negative vault materials. And that's good because the previous release looked and sounded like an old 8mm home movie capture. The other version is an alternate pre-release cut of the film.
Amongst other bonuses, the Image press release touts "hundreds of revealing photographs from the set never seen by the public". But I have to say, it can't get that much more revealing than what's already in the movie itself.
So there you have it. Caligula, the cult classic, gets re-released on DVD. And if you're in The Caligula Cult, it's your best day ever.
Three discs - Not four!.......2007-08-15
If you go to the Image entertainment web site, and look at the actual box art of the Imperial edition (very top of box) you will see that this is definetly coming out as a three disc edition - apparently the fourth disc was to be a complete soundtrack of the film but got pulled due to legal reasons.Lets hope that amazon take this into account and reduce the price of the box set accordingly.Great film by the way - hope this really is the 210 version as it can finally set the record straight as to all the rumours of what was cut out.Would be nice if the long version was also cleaned up and doesn't come out later on remastered as another cash in scheme for the dvd releasing company.
DVD details.......2007-08-10
On their website, Image Entertainment oddly lists the DVD as having 3 discs, even though the cover says 4.
Image Entertainment includes the following information about the DVD:
Two revealing new full-length audio commentaries with stars Malcolm McDowell and Helen Mirren

New high-definition transfer of the unrated, uncensored feature film
Alternate pre-release version of the film with never-before-seen footage

the complete caligula is here........2007-08-02
this is the definite caligula dvd edition. 156' + previously unseen extras are here in this 3 dvd box set.
This set is worth of it's extras even if u have the movie.
Here the movie presented uncut and the set includes two documentairies and commentairies by malcom mc dowel and helen mirren.
It also has trailers and never before seen photo gallery but most important it has an alternate pre-release version of the film which includes never before seen footage and this alone is enough to purchace this dvd set.

Description
Caligula may very well be the most controversial film in history. Only one movie dares to show the perversion behind Imperial Rome, and that movie is "Caligula," the epic story of Rome's mad emperor. All the details of his cruel, bizarre reign are revealed right here: his unholy sexual passion for his sister, his marriage to Rome's most infamous prostitute, his fiendishly inventive means of disposing of those who would oppose him, and more. The combined talents of cinematic giants Malcolm McDowell, Peter O'Toole, John Gielgud and Shakespearean actress Helen Mirren, along with an acclaimed international cast and a bevy of beautiful Penthouse Pets, make this unique historical drama a masterwork of the screen. Not for the squeamish, not for the prudish, "Caligula" will shock and arouse you as it reveals the deviance and decadence beneath the surface of the grandeur that once was Rome.

Negative-5 Stars.......2007-09-12
This has got to be one of the worst films ever made...It is consistently on Ebert's worst-film list, and with good reason.
Terrible setting and background. And its basically only a porn flick.
No wonder all the main characters - and some of the producers - have since expressed regret in having been invloved with it.
1970's trash at its worst.
Wanna be shocked?.......2007-07-26
then buy this movie. unrated version of course.
its quit literally just short of a full length porn. you want homosexual felatio? you want homosexual cunnilingus? you want male masterbation ejaculation? you can have it all and more.
this movie's unrated version is not for the weak. if you can't handle watching all stated above and more, i don't suggest you spend the cash.
otherwise..........enjoy. this film is twisted.
Ground Breaking.......2007-07-12
Lurid and controversial in its day, this classic continues to be a movie that will disturb and shock. Great stuff, and a must see.
New 4-Disc Version of Caligula being released on October 2, 2007!.......2007-07-09
Wow! A new four disc "Imperial Version" DVD of Caligula has been announced for release in October that will feature a much improved transfer and an incredible amount of extras. The upcoming release pretty much renders the current out-of-print Caligula DVD obsolete and worthless, so those who have put off on buying Caligula until now need only wait a few months to get the ultimate version of this infamous movie. I've already returned my current copy back to the store I bought it from in anticipation of the new 4-disc extravaganza!
Some of the extras on the new version will include:
Audio commentary (On-set writer Ernest Volkman)
Audio commentary (Malcolm McDowell and Helen Mirren)
Documentaries (Two versions of "The Making of Caligula")
Interview(s) (Tinto Brass and actors John Steiner and Lori Wagner)
Photo gallery (Never-before-seen images from the set)
DVD-ROM content (Press kit notes)
DVD-ROM content (Interview with Bob Guccione)
DVD-ROM content (Gore Vidal's original screenplay)
DVD-ROM content (Three Penthouse magazine features)
Featurette (Alternate pre-release version of the film with never-before-seen footage)
Bonus CD containing the full released soundtrack plus 40 minutes of film score never before available.
The R rated version is better.......2007-06-18
Probably, people are primarily interested in this movie because of its reputation as expensive porn, in which case the old R rated version is passe. However, honestly, it's the better version. Take away the endless, lengthy gratuitous explicit porn and violence, and you can see this is actually a pretty good movie with some good acting. I liked this movie when I saw it years ago, and out of curiosity just rented the uncut version. After awhile, I just got bored. Do you want a Penthouse spread or a decent movie? The decision is clear if you know what you want.

Description
Caligula Reincarnated as Hitler: SS Commandant Starker runs a women's prison of war camp that serves as a stop-over for soldiers returning to the front. Along with his demented subordinates and a female Gestapo officer who feeds victims to her dogs, the monstrous Starker takes great pleasure in the atrocities he commits. White Slave: While enjoying the exotic splendors of the Amazon River, beautiful Katherine Miles witnesses the gruesome decapitation of her parents by headhunters. Abducted by the bloodthirsty warriors and taken deep into the jungle, Katherine is subjected to torture, humiliation, and attack by cannibals, as well as gut-churning primitive rituals and punishments.
Customer Reviews:
Quite nasty........2007-06-18
If you are sensitive to The Holocaust, then this is one exploitation film that I would avoid. Taking it's cue directly from "The Night Porter" it tells the story of a beautiful blonde named Lise and her lover, a former SS commander and head of a concentration camp. Turns out the two met when Lise was bought to the camp as a prisoner, and it was only after subjecting her to countless physical and psychological tortures that the commander finally fell in love with her. The atrocities that went on in the camp form the basis of the film, and are told in the form of extended flashbacks.
Now, unlike other Nazi romps like the Ilsa films and "SS Experiment Camp" or "The Beast in Heat", this is one film that you really can't watch for laughs or titillation. The atmosphere is surprisingly grim, and it's not just down to any graphic violence. What marks it out is that it doesn't shy away from the historial fact that the Nazis were exterminating Jews and the script goes to some length to point this out during many of the torture and sex scenes as the Nazis constantly deride and humiliate the inmates with reference to their Jewishness. It adds a distinctly nasty edge to the film, one that is not helped by the most notorious sequnce in which the Nazi dignitaries decide to liven up a banquet by cooking and eating one of the semi naked inmates who has just fainted after a particularly nauseating (and long) rant by one of the more fervent diners on the subject of how the Jewish people should best be utilised to serve the "greater Germany". Removed from the old UK "video nasty" videe version, this sequencee is undoubtedly the most chilling part of the entire film, but it's not the nudity or death that causes it, it's the hatred and disregard for the Jewish race that is painted so vividly in this scene. The fact that the actors are only average performers for this kind of genre film, plus the English dubbing is terrible, only seems to highlight just how offensive this script actually is.
For it's most part, the film exists mainly to show the attractive heroine in various states of undress and either being subjected to or witnessing many acts of cruelty and torture. To break her spirit, her best friends are murdered in front of her. She is sexually degraded, and hung upside-down over a cage of rats. A Nazi guard taunts her with clothing and ornaments made of skin and body parts of dead inmates. All the time she sinks further and further into a comatose state which allows her to withstand the nightmare, until the camp commander finally admits defeat and takes her on as his lover. The film ends with the flashback portion finally revealing Lise's ultimate tragedy, as well as how she has managed to stop herself from going totally insane in the years that came after it was all over.
Filmed with some degree of competence, this is actually a fairly well made movie. Whether it's enjoyable or not is dubious. The fact that the film uses genuine documented stories of Nazi behaviour at the death camps as inspiration for sexsploitation is quite sickening in places. The re-release titled as "Caligula Reincarnated as Hitler" presents a terrible full-screen version of the film that cuts off several key parts of the picture all the way through, and adds a specially filmed title sequence featuring a pouting model wearing an SS party outfit...oh lordy. At least they kept the original theme music, and it appears to be the long uncut version. The old UK video was slightly letterboxed but missing the banquet scene. I haven't seen any other releases, but if someone dares bring out a wide-screen remastered DVD version in English, that would be the one to go for, if you think you can take it.
NB I haven't watched the other film on the double pack "White Slave"
Hitler/Caligula: Rape, Torture, and Fun.......2006-07-06
"Caligula Reincarnated as Hitler" was a good rape, terror, and torture movie. There are some sexual violence scenes that are too brief. As the other reviewer said, beatings, whippings, gang raping of women prisoners, dipping naked women into vats of lime, and hanging the young blonde star nude and upside down over a box of live rats round the good scenes out. If you're a fan of sicko movies, this will get you off hard. At times the movie is a bit slow, as I found myself wanting to see more abuse and humiliation and degredation rather than scenes where nothing happens. (The intro care ride scene is boring, and just reminded me of a recent car accident I was in. Buit I digress ... ) I haven't watched "White Slave" yet but will when I can. I have great expectations for more sick, disguisting fun! - Matt Mazzuckelli
Caligula Reg. as Hitler/ White Slave .......2006-07-04
Good stuff , I think I enjoyed White Slave more than the other.
Two classics together, however, not their entire versions........2006-03-06
While both movies are entertaining in their own right, I thought I would mention to buyers and viewers out there that the film White Slave is also under the title of Amazonia: The Catherine Miles Story. You can find this DVD here on Amazon from the Shreik Show label. This DVD shows more gore than the White Slave, which was the US release of the film. This film also wanted to use the title of Cannibal Holocaust 2 to promote larger sales, however, this did not happen. The movie itself is interesting as it is a supposed true story (not much on the internet about it, other than sales of the movie).
The Caligula film was interesting, however, it seems to serve to show Nazis who are interested in degrading women while stripping them naked. Perhaps instances happened, however, it was always my impression that Nazis elites actually avoided as much violence as possible so as not to be stimulated emotionally. They just gave orders, never did anything themselves. Otherwise, its a good exploitation flick. I like White Slave better.
All five stars for Caligula Reincarnated...........2005-11-16
As a "kind of sewer" of these Italian sexplotation flicks, Capt. Freaky knows a good film when he sees one! The first of this dual DVD, "White Slave" was not worth watching or mentioning for any reason. Piss poor special effects of beheadings...no sex in the film whatsoever...and nothing to make anyone horny or subsequently enjoy themselves.
On the other hand, the second film, "Caligula Reincarnated as Hitler" was way better than what I expected. Just the exceptional location of Northern Italy's lake district gives it one star. Furthermore, the young blonde star of the film is gorgeous and someone both men and women would find attractive to sleep with. There are some five star sexual violence scenes that are unfortunately too brief. Beatings, whippings, gang raping of women prisoners, dipping naked women into vats of lime, hanging the young blonde star nude and upside down over a box of live rats! I mean, hey you "sicko" Nazi fans, is this something or what?
There are no actual hard core sex scenes, however, there are multiple simulated sex scenes that are quite hot to watch. I think there is significant sexual tension in scenes throughout this very good storyline. If you are into the whole "Nazi sex slave camp" thing....this is by far, the best of that genre I have come across. And because I only paid $9.99 for this double feature...it makes it a 5 star film for me by all catagories.
I am curious if there is an unrated or extra cut film out there of this, as another reviewer hinted at? If so, and they showed more actual sex, that would be the one to purchase.

Pass on this one.......2007-08-31
This movie has been butchered by the Korean censors. I do not understand why a Korean company would bother to issue such a DVD if they are timid about showing the human anatomy. The continuous cuts are done with no regard to the the continuity so that scenes jump from one place to another constantly throughout the movie as the censors delete the offending frames. I am amazed that the copyright holders of this movie would allow this version to come out under the movie's title. It is so completely eviscerated that it bears no relation to the intent of the original film.

Absolute Garbage.......2003-10-12
Save your money, your time and your sanity! This movie is a waste of all of the above.
Absolute Waste Of Film.......2003-10-12
Poor quality, crap dubbing, totally out of synch.....I shall refrain from using expletives..Save your money!!
Poor, heavily-edited DVD is a joke, see it uncut PLEASE!.......2002-06-17
My low score is due mainly to the atrocious DVD release, not the film itself. Why does this DVD bite? Let me count the ways...
1.) Not widescreen
2.) Edited to pieces! The original was much more gory and had several HARDCORE ... scenes.
3.) Poor picture and sound.
The film itself isn't a classic by any means, but this release makes matters worse. Try to get a hold of an uncut version (available from many cult video dealers) and judge the film that way. Even the amazing Laura Gemser couldn't save this mess of a DVD, but I gave it one star just because she's in it. :)
a waist of money.......2001-10-09
having watched the original film before, i was shocked with all the cuts they have made to this movie. all the good sex has been slashed, don`t waist your money buying this movie.
BRING BACK BOBBY GUCCIONE!.......2001-05-16
This film takes a lot of its' substance from Tinto Brass' epic 'Caligula' (1980) but is rather more gratuitous and lacks the stylishness of Donati's set-design which for me makes the latter beautiful to look at. I know that now. Malcolm MacDowell played the emperor consumately and its hard to imagine Martine Stephano or Bruce Willis playing Caligula with such sangfroid. This is another auteur offering that attempts to be 'historicaloso' but has more in common with that horrible stream of cak that comes from America & that degenerate English ex-colony Hong Kong. If you are a fan of Joe D'Amato you will appreciate it on a better level; being a Tinto Brass fan I'm biased toward the first attempt to make a film about Caligula. Incidentally, he was no worse than Nero or Domitian. Domitian was as sadistic as the others and would laugh hysterically at the executions of his enemies, while making their families watch. If the families did'nt join in the laughter, he had them branded with hot irons and made them laugh as they were being tortured. If they screamed he'd have them killed. ...Julius Caesar was a cross-dresser with a love of wine ... It was thus common in these times for the ruling elite to act like raving [people]; as they do now. A terrible film about a terrible topic.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic movie!.......2003-11-15
I admit that after reading Grave's "I Claudius" and "Claudius the God", the notion of Emperor Claudius merely acting out his stupidity as to survive the intrigues of his evil family seemed plausible. Oh boy, was I mislead! Caligula II made me realize that the ancient historians might have been right all along. Poor uncle Cla-Cla-Claudius was portrayed fantastically and the ever-whining centurion...oh man this movie is definately a must see. Even though I was straining to understand the muffled dialogue, being Enlish my second language making it all worse, this movie was greatly entertaining and had parts that were deliciously funny. The porn is pathetic, which in my view adds to the humour of it all. If you are a Roman history fan, this movie is the perfect refreshment after a long period of literary severity.
caligula.......2003-09-26
caligula died in the first one that was the end of the story
Italian historical sex farce comedy.......2003-03-28
This film is not a sequel to the famous Guccione "Caligula" with Malcolm McDowell etc. It is not even a real sequel to the "Caligula" with Laura Gesmer and David Haughton (ASIN: 6303364438), which is released on video and DVD by the same company. The only connection is that they use the same sets! Caligula is not even in this movie!
This film follows the stories of the Emperor Claudius, trying to run the empire while passing gas (on doctor's orders) all the time and hopelessly in love with his wife, the Empress Messalina, who is having sex every man in Rome except her husband, a traveller who has come to rome looking for a good time, and a Roman con-man. There are several funny scenes involving sexual situations, such as the con-man convincing the traveller that a Christian's home is a brothel, and the Empress, disguised as a prostitute, attempting to act out every sexual position illustrated in pictures on the wall ("do them all and it's free...wait, I think you missed one...well, we'll just have to start over..."). It all ends in a comedic bloodbath when Claudius comes home early and finds an orgy in the palace.
For all it's eroticism, this is not a "porno" flick, in that it is not just about sex for sex's sake. It's a sex comedy, where most of the humor involves sex or sexual situations. It is also a historical farce, satirizing the Roman Empire and other Roman Empire movies. It's funny both for the comedy, and for how "bad" this movie is. It is badly dubbed, badly acted and the effects are really cheezy. Not a timeless masterpiece, but somewhat amusing.
trash in trash out.......2002-10-10
horrible ,disgusting a piece of good film wasted but when you trying to make money of a classic story (who are they )the producer.the original story caligula i love and thought they would finish the story . ps what a waste.
Intermedia Video Pro released the worst DVD I have seen.......2001-03-29
Not that I dislike the movie, but the DVD transfer looks even worse than a BAD video tape. Aspect ratio is 4:3 of course, colours are at maximum wash-out level, and the extremely grainy picture even JUMPS at times!! The English dubbing is muffled. The film itself is enjoyable only for fans of Italian stupidity. No extras. No Italian soundtrack. I would think that this is cut, for there's nothing truly ofensive in it.
