When the theatrical release of James Cameron's Titanic was delayed from July to December of 1997, media pundits speculated that Cameron's $200-million disaster epic would cause the director's downfall, signal the end of the blockbuster era, and sink Paramount Pictures as quickly as the ill-fated luxury liner had sunk on that fateful night of April 14, 1912. Titanic would surpass the $1-billion mark in global box-office receipts, win 11 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Director, launch the best-selling movie soundtrack of all time, and make a global superstar of Leonardo DiCaprio. A bona fide pop-cultural phenomenon, the film has all the ingredients of a blockbuster (romance, passion, luxury, grand scale, a snidely villain, and an epic, life-threatening crisis), but Cameron's alchemy of these ingredients proved more popular than anyone could have predicted. His stroke of genius was to combine absolute authenticity with a pair of fictional lovers whose tragic fate would draw viewers into the heart-wrenching reality of the Titanic disaster. As starving artist Jack Dawson and soon-to-be-married socialite Rose DeWitt Bukater, DiCaprio and Kate Winslet won the hearts of viewers around the world, and their brief, but never forgotten, love affair provides the humanity that Cameron needed to turn Titanic into a moving emotional experience. Although some of the computer-generated visual effects look artificial, others--such as the climactic splitting of the ship's sinking hull--are state-of-the-art marvels of cinematic ingenuity. It's an event film and a monument to Cameron's risk-taking audacity, blending the tragic irony of the Titanic disaster with just enough narrative invention to give the historical event its fullest and most timeless dramatic impact. --Jeff Shannon
DVD features
Perhaps James Cameron wasn't ready to dish in 1999 when his mega-hit debuted on DVD with nary an extra (no, we don't count the trailer). Now in 2005, Cameron and his magicians dish on the cutting-edge effects and the craft of the movie. The heart of the extras are over 45 minutes of deleted scenes fans will fawn over, including some dealing with historical backstory (including a scene on the nearby ship California), a great kiss between Jack and Rose, and an extended suspense scene (listen to Cameron's commentary on that one). Happily, the alternate ending was not used (no, Jack doesn't live). The sound has been upgraded (including a DTS 6.1 ES track), the color palate is richer (the interiors glow more), and the picture is anamorphically enhanced for widescreen televisions, although the film is now split onto two discs.
The three-disc set has an abundance of materials; the galleries, for example, contain 628 on-set photos, 447 personal photos from the cinematographer, 532 storyboard sketches, 148 technical drawings, and even a 72-page bibliography. The features on the sets and effects offer some great tidbits, many dealing how everything had to be made versus rented since most items were going to be destroyed on camera.
Cameron is pictured on the box art and his stamp is all over the DVD set. He narrates the deep dive footage, you can read his original "scriptment" (if you want to read though 492 page clicks; some of these extras would have been better on a CD-ROM), and his commentary track is so complete, he covers most of the items the historical experts offer on their own track (they get too caught up in the film to muster more interesting facts). He offers only one apology for a factual "guess" and clears up that "king of the world" riff at the Oscars. The third commentary with most of the key members of the cast and crew is worth a listen but, alas, Leonardo DiCaprio does not contribute to this or any other new feature. Other must-sees: a time-lapse short on the creation of the boat set, and the first-half of a salute to the staff that works as a blooper reel. One caveat: there's a four-disc Region 2 version available in Europe with parodies and other extras, but no one is offering an official reason why it's not offered in the States. --Doug Thomas

Its Greatness Will Stand The Test Of Time.......2007-09-12
Remember about ten years ago when this film swept the Oscars and Titanic merchandise of all conceivable varieties filled the shelves of every store? Now that all of that has had its time and that time has passed, what remains for us to concentrate on instead is simply the presence of a great motion picture. Titanic is a tour de force spectacle that forever raises the bar for all films and redefines what the word "blockbuster" means. This love story, tragedy, special effects showcase, historical film par excellence holds up flawlessly today and in some ways might even be better now not only because of that fact, but because once someone can separate James Cameron's achievement from the hype and hoopla that once all but swallowed Titanic, epic though it was, what is left is a film that is all the more surpassing for what it offers on camera. From its artistic recreation of the most famous luxury liner ever to exist, to its performances by a vast and talented cast, to the universally gripping nature of its central plot about disaster, irony, and large-scale loss, Titanic is a movie that will always have meaning to viewers in any age, and for that reason and for every other I've cited, it is a classic and always will be.
Excellent in Content.......2007-09-11
This is a very impressive collection of bonus features. However, if you haven't purchased it yet, you may wish to hold off. A "Titanic 10th Anniversary" DVD is planned for release in November, and may have more content.
A TRUE WORK OF FILM ART..........2007-09-10
I recall feeling so strongly positive towards only two other films in my life, after seeing them initially, and those moments were after seeing "Apocalypse Now" back in 1980 and "Close Encounters" back in 1977. "Titanic" became the third and like the previous two, it has remained a definite top ten for me at the very least. While I did not care for the "Redux" version of Apocalypse Now, or the various versions of CE3K, DVD's for purchase which contain all the good parts of both, are available and this particular Titanic DVD adds TONS of extra goodies, making it a must buy for any fan or even semi-fan of the film. And at a great Amazon price. In fact, I did buy this DVD and sent it off as a gift to my sister, who loves the movie as much as me.
For all of its hype, awards, and budget (over $200 million), in many ways, this is a very "personal" film from director James Cameron (Terminator 2, The Abyss, Aliens, etc.), and never do the eye-popping special effects (of which there are plenty) get in the way of the very special adventure and exquisite and deep "love story" being told. That utterly and unashamedly romantic aspect, despite what some may think of such a blockbuster "disaster" movie, is at the heart of "Titanic," and it is as powerful, convincing, and passionate, as the actual FX representation of the sinking of the ship, which only begins halfway through the movie itself. Both halves however, stand on their own, and neither is less compelling and involving for the viewer. Add the two together, and what you've basically got is over three hours of absolutely spellbinding entertainment. To see "Titanic" in a way, is not so much like watching a movie, as it is to "experience" the best that cinema can possibly offer.
I will not attempt to summarize the plot here (ship sails, ship sinks, okay?), to list various technical aspects of the production, nor even dwell on the historical event this fictional film uses as a backdrop for the story it tells. Such information can be found elsewhere. And what has been said since its release by fans, has not already been said? My only purpose is to present my astonishment in this work, how like the original Apocalypse Now and Close Encounters (and a few other top ten films on my list including 2001, The Apartment, The Music Man, etc.), this is basically just a perfect Hollywood film, frame to frame, and scene to scene. And to encourage anyone who loves this movie to buy this extra-packed DVD goodie.
Throughout, director Cameron's techniques seem flawless. It really does seem as if every piece of film, every scene, was carefully shot and edited in as exacting, interesting, accurate, involving, and exhilarating manner as possible. In addition, James Horner's brilliant music (in many different styles to boot) gives virtually every scene, regardless of the content, extra depth, feeling, and romance. Not to mention the great title tune hit, "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion. The theme of the song reverberates throughout the film and I'd strongly suggest buying the film's soundtrack as well.
The movie is fascinating and completely involving from start to finish and even its three hour plus length is something almost unnoticed. The characters, the suspense, the beauty of the cinematography and sets, the great acting by the leads, and the lavish and achingly romantic triumphs and tragic story themes explored throughout are all first rate. And they only bring to mind just a few adjectives I can only think of when recommending with five stars (though it deserves ten) this masterpiece, "extraordinary," "spectacular," "breathtaking," and simply unforgettable. Despite it all, this movie does one other thing which makes it deserve my highest praise. It brings back memories of my aging, sick mom (RIP), this being the last movie I saw with her in a theater. And my main memory of that is that at the end, both of us clapped out loud, and cried.
Finally, perhaps the most astonishing thing about the film however, is the power and almost cosmic taste Cameron gives to what amounts to a simple, old-fashioned (and done before), "love story." Imparting a positive, life-affirming, almost logical/rational attitude on the whole concept of romantic love itself, which is something sorely lacking in so many "modern" movies, the film often takes on an almost surreal tone on passion and desire many times throughout. None of it however, comes off in any way as "preachy" or sugary-sweet and phony. True love and its mysterious veneration for the mundane and ordinary, is treated with reverence, understanding, and subtlety by Cameron in virtually every moment.
I have a feeling it will be many more years before we see such cinematic gold like this again from the studio system. And this took the combined power and money of two studios to even produce. However, I do hope that if and when Hollywood (as it inevitably must) tries something like this again, it will remember that the real power behind this particular film, has less to do with the fantastic effects or the obvious money spent to pull this off on screen, and more to do with the story and explicit/hidden, almost philosophical meanings and implications.
"Titanic" is, in the highest sense of the word, not merely great entertainment throughout, but great ART. This is a treasured gem, more valuable in spirit than the heart-shaped, priceless blue diamond "Rose" leaves with "Jack" in the end, somewhere at the bottom of the ocean. For its main message is clear. True love is invaluable and "goes on." Perhaps even (wishing my mom luck in reconnecting with her own Jack, and my father in any afterlife), truly forever. A transcendent classic, and an undeniable must-buy for any fan of the movie with a still-functioning DVD player and "soul."
My most cherished possession..........2007-09-01
As described; new in pacakge! Included all the extras and nice case! The price was good too!
I would rather be shot in the head than watch this movie again.......2007-08-21
When I was a child, I remember reading about the Titanic and found it mildly interesting. However, when the motion picture made its way to local theaters, I was less than thrilled.
It arrived in theaters when I was 18. My father forced me to watch this movie with him. He made it clear that he was being forced by my mother to watch it and he wanted me to suffer through it as well. It was easily the worst 3 hours of my life and I've been to jail before.
It's really hard to write a review and not use cuss words, but basically, this movie is complete trash. There are interesting architectural details that are historically correct and some of the characters are based on real people. But the movie was ruined by being a completely cheesy love story. The soundtrack was bad enough that I would only buy the CD if I was going to torture someone by playing it over and over again to get the information out of them.
When I hear the word "Titanic" my brain instantly flashes the two ugly people in my mind (Kate and Leo) and the horrible Irish whistles start playing... accompanied by Celine Dion and her horrid "cat in heat" voice.
I will never forgive my parents for making me watch this movie.

Some studio executives were confident, others horrified, but the clarity of hindsight turned Cameron into an Oscar-winning genius, a shrewd businessman, and one of the most successful directors in the history of motion pictures. Titanic would surpass the $1 billion mark in global box-office receipts (largely due to multiple viewings, the majority by teenage girls), win 11 Academy Awards including best picture and director, produce the best-selling movie soundtrack of all time, and make a global superstar of Leonardo DiCaprio. As starving artist Jack Dawson and soon-to-be-married socialite Rose DeWitt Bukater, DiCaprio and Kate Winslet won the hearts of viewers around the world, and their brief but never-forgotten love affair provides the humanity that Cameron needed to turn Titanic into an emotional experience. Present-day framing scenes (featuring Gloria Stuart as the 101-year-old Rose) add additional resonance to the story, and although some viewers proved vehemently immune to Cameron's manipulations, few can deny the production's impressive achievements. Although some of the computer-generated visual effects look artificial, others--such as the sunset silhouette of Titanic during its first evening at sea, or the climactic splitting of the ship's sinking hull--are state-of-the-art marvels. In terms of sets and costumes alone, the film is never less than astounding. More than anything else, however, the film's overwhelming popularity speaks for itself. Titanic is an event film and a monument to Cameron's risk-taking audacity, blending the tragic irony of the Titanic disaster with just enough narrative invention to give the historical event its fullest and most timeless dramatic impact. Titanic is an epic love story on par with Gone with the Wind, and like that earlier box-office phenomenon, it's a film for the ages. --Jeff Shannon

Of all the many documentaries that have been made about the Titanic disaster, this two-part, 192-minute film, produced in 1994 for the Arts & Entertainment network, remains the most thorough, authoritative, and fascinating chronicle of the Titanic tragedy. Written, produced, and directed by Melissa Jo Peltier and elegantly narrated by actor David McCallum, the film utilizes thorough research, archival films and documents, and expert testimony to span the entire history of the legendary S.S. Titanic. From blueprint design and construction in Ireland, to the ill-fated maiden voyage and the lasting legacy of Titanic's fateful sinking, no detail has been neglected in the film's meticulous description of events. Part 1, "The Death of a Dream," builds dramatic momentum to the ship's collision with an iceberg in the freezing North Atlantic, including detailed accounts of the agonizing two-hour sinking and the rescue of survivors. Part 2, "The Legend Lives On," explores the investigation into Titanic's sinking, the impact on later ship design and the dramatic rediscovery of Titanic's ghostly remains on the ocean floor. Parts 1 and 2 include abundant interviews with such noted Titanic authorities as Don Lynch and Ken Marschall (consultants on the blockbuster movie Titanic), and several Titanic survivors who have since passed away. The cumulative effect of this detailed film is a complete appreciation for the sheer irony, drama, and magnitude of the Titanic disaster. The James Cameron film was certainly entertaining, but this superior documentary proves that truth can be every bit as absorbing as fictionalized history. It's an essential addition to any Titanic buff's library. --Jeff Shannon

Complete, Interesting, Emotional - Wonderful !.......2007-06-06
This is by far the best Titanic documentary I've seen, and I have seen quite a few. To me, it is more entertaining than any of the Titanic movies, or any of the other documentaries; And, it can take you from a Titanic novice to an expert in 3-4 hours.
The expert accounts are plentiful - from survivors to historians and enthusiasts. The son of Stanley Lord even has a spot in there.
If you find Titanic interesting, you must have a copy of this set. It is the most complete account of the Titanic story that I have found. I loved it!
I Really Enjoyed This DVD Set.......2007-01-09
After seeing the Titanic Exhibit in Las Vegas, the tragedy of the Titanic was brought to life to me.
I love the 1997 film, but I knew very little about the real story of the Titanic.
This set is a fantastic introduction to anyone who wants to know more about the Titanic and needs a starting point.
Each of the 3 DVDs is informative and interesting.
It was chilling to see and hear the survivors of the disaster and to hear interviews of leaders of the search for the wreckage and the authors of books.
I also love the paintings of the disaster. They are beautiful and seem to bring that fateful night to life!
I strongly recommend this series for any interested adult like me or for educational purposes.
This set would be a great library addition for anyone homeschooling their child.
It belongs in every public library and school.
One other item: The 1997 film is quite accurate as far as the story goes -- of course there were no Jack nor Rose.
Titanic was out of luck, so was I .......2006-05-30
I ordered and received a copy of this DVD boxed set. When it arrived I found that there were 2 DVDs, played the first it was good. My wife and started to watch the second DVD and found that the second disc was identical to the first. Sent them back and asked for replacement set. They arrived. You guessed it, same story again. Amazon let me keep this set and credited my Visa A/C. Seems like poor quality control at A&E. I just want a complete set. Anyone else had this problem?
Compelling and Fascinating.......2006-02-21
The Titanic is a compelling film about the real life story of H.M.S. Titanic. The story is detailed and moving and provides Titanic lovers with a perspective of the agony and suffering that passengers of this great ship endured during its last moments. For those interested in maritime safety or just interested in knowing the story behind the Titanic tragedy, this is a highly recommended movie.
For those not familiar with the history of this great liner, a brief narration may help. The Titanic was launched in Belfast in May 1911. A magazine at the time described it as "practically unsinkable".
The liner was impressive in its size and features. She was 269 metres long, 28 metres wide and as tall as an eleven storey building. The luxury of the ship was unique and unparalleled at the time. Among the luxury features was a swimming pool for first class passengers, the first to be built on a liner.
The Titanic set sail from Southampton on 10 April 1912. On 14 April 1912, a look out man sounded the alarm bells and announced an iceberg just ahead of them. Unfortunately, it was too late and the ship collided with the iceberg and within some few seconds, the starboard side of the liner was torn open and seawater poured in.
Sadly, there were not enough lifeboats on board and only a small fraction of the passengers (largely those travelling first class) were rescued and almost all those in third class were not rescued. The ship's band continued to play during the commotion that followed and as the stern of the ship rose high and the ship began to sink. Over 1500 people perished in this accident.
Among the critical lessons that we learn from this tragedy is the need to have an effective safety management system. Thankfully, many of the lessons learnt in the tragedy helped the regulatory authorities, manufacturers and ship owners to come up with design and operational features that have made liners much safer.
Great detail...fascinating!.......2005-05-02
I purchased this for my 9 year old as he is obsessed with the tragedy of the Titanic sinking in 1912. We both were fascinated by it. Great Job A&E. I watched it with my son and have already repeated watching the second disc the very next day myself! It is awesome and really detailed. It is hard to believe some of the facts that had to do with the "times" such as class distinctions, also equally disturbing that even that as gallant as it was and appropriate in those times for "women and children first" to be saved, the tragedy left the rescued women instant widows in a time that was very difficult as it was pre-sufferget, also not to mention fatherless children and the horrible fact that most 3rd class passengers (if not all of them) perished, women, children and men. They left no stone unturned in this presentation. I would highly recommend this DVD to anyone really seeking facts about that night and the history and politics involved afterward, with the trials of Ismay and also Captian Lord (Captain from the ship accused of not responding to the Titanic's distress flares). It takes you from the beginning of the Titanic in Belfast Ireland to the sinking and rescue of the survivors in the life boats and bringing them to New York. There are personal quotes from passengers as written to loved ones and still photographs taken on the ship prior to the night of April 14th. The show also includes footage of commentary from living survivors today, that add another dimension to the presentation, which makes it so much more real, as well as commentary from Titanic historians and book authors (one inparticular Walter Lord "A Night To Remember" who had interviewed survivors years ago before some of them passed away). Then leads you up to the finding of the sunken ship in the 1980's. I think they covered it all. It is the most complete account in every way of anything I have seen or read on the Titanic so far. Excellent!

The tragedy of the Titanic has fascinated all since she sank with 1,500 of her passengers and crew in 1912. Much later, scientist Robert Ballard set out to find and explore the wreck, despite difficulties of depth and location. Using the research submarine Alvin and a remote-controlled underwater robot, he was the first human in over 70 years to see the giant resting beneath the North Atlantic waves. Secrets of the Titanic tells the story of the events leading up to the sinking using footage and photographs from the doomed maiden voyage and then follows the luckier Dr. Ballard through the steps leading to his discovery. As usual for National Geographic, the photography is excellent, even within the cramped confines of the tiny Alvin. The first views of the Titanic's interior are truly spectacular, especially when contrasted with vintage photos, and the excitement of Ballard and his crew is contagious. The spirit and joys of discovery are well captured and the viewer is reminded that the world is still teeming with opportunities for adventure. --Rob Lightner

Titanic documentary is good.......2007-08-14
This documentary starts at the time when the titanic was being built in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Then it goes to the luxury of the Titanic, sea trails then her maiden voyage to New York City, and the sinking. Then the documentary shows the camera when the time Titanic was discovered on September 1 1985. After that scene of the documentary DR.Robert Ballard gets to explore the Titanic wreck in tiny submersible, and he uses underwater robot called Jason Juinor or JJ.Then it shows the day April 15 when the Cunard Liner Carpathia rescues the survivors of the disaster, then goes to New York. After that it shows newpapers all over the globe especially in London,Liverpool, and New York where people gather offices of White Star Line to see if there loved ones survived or not. Then DR.Robert Ballard prepares for anoter dive to Titanic but this dive was abandoned because alvin-the submersible battery was leaking. Then later talks to the men about tomorrows dive with his little titanic model. In the documentary,a scene called TITANIC REVEALED the narrator Martin Sheen tells about that the Titanic is no longer lost,no longer legend, there are survivors and people abord the UNSINKABLE great ship once again after 74 dark, quiet, silent years. Then alvin comes close to the crows nest where one of the lookouts spots an iceberg then reports to the bridge. From the bridge engines where signaled FULL ASTERN,and the wheel hard-a-starboard.Then at the end of the documentary shows that 1500 people where soon going to die,at the end DR.Robert Ballard leaves behind memorial plaque to honor for those died on that night.

Have used this to show to science students---grade 9---now I have my own copy----came in great shape---thanks!!
Worth viewing.......2007-07-20
A good update on Bob Ballard's quest to find the Titanic. The Titanic Exhibit is currently in our city and this, coupled with other Titanic videos and books have helped learning about the whole story.
Whether you see the exhibit or not, if you are interested in the Titanic, this is an important part of the story.
Secrets Review.......2007-05-12
This is one of the cornerstone movies for Titanic "buffs." Although it doesn't get into depth about the hows and whys and the different theories surrounding the sinking of the ill-fated liner, there is a strong emphasis on deep-sea exploration. A lot of good footage of the ship is there too, but remember, it was filmed in 1986, so it's not HD. :)
Great for the classroom.
A peice of history laid to rest........2007-02-22
Talk about finding a needle in a haystack! Like a real-life detective story. This documentary is like being there during a historic moment.

All though a little on the fiction side I think that Raise the Titanic is a movie worth watching. I also think my man Friday was worth watching as well
Raise is a good movie/Couldn't finish Man Friday.......2007-06-03
RAISE THE TITANIC is a good movie. It stands the test of time pretty well and is worth watching. I watched the first few minutes of MAN FRIDAY and had to stop (nothing against Richard Roundtree, but his singing isn't worth my time).
Good movie.......2007-03-09
Saw "Raise the Titanic", great old movie. haven't seen Man Friday yet.
So far no problems :)
Good News and Bad News.......2007-01-12
I purchased this DVD soley for Raise the Titanic which I saw on TV several years ago. While the DVD quality isn't top notch I still enjoyed the movie. As for Man Friday - well, I turned it off early and don't intend to ever watch it all the way through. It's too bad they had to put in on the same DVD. I would rate this 5 stars for Raise the Titanic only. The scale doesn't go low enough for Man Friday (at least the part I did watch).
If there is no other option.......2007-01-04
I would recomend this title if you have to have this movie. I bought it for the Titanic title since there is no other way to have it by its own. The quality of the picture is at most "fair", the audio is in the same category. Like I said, I just buoght it because I loved the movie and the score. So there you have it. As soon as there is a remastered version I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Although it was never known for strict authenticity, the elegant 1953 production of Titanic holds just as much fascination as A Night to Remember and James Cameron's 1997 blockbuster. Its original screenplay deservedly won an Oscar® for its brilliant, dramatically involving creation of fictional characters--primarily a strained couple on the verge of divorce (Clifton Webb, Barbara Stanwyck)--whose lives are forever altered on that fateful morning of April 15, 1912. Director Jean Negulesco focuses on this human drama, lending a personal touch to the luxury liner's fatal collision with an iceberg; if the scale-model disaster (complete with motorized miniature lifeboat rowers) looks quaint by modern special-effects standards, it still captures the emotional impact of Titanic's ultimate fate. While Titanic's sinking is inaccurately depicted (here the ship is damaged on the port side, and sinks in one piece), the Webb/Stanwyck relationship is handled with sophistication, style, and well-earned redemption. As would happen with Cameron's Titanic 44 years later, fiction proved a perfect vehicle for tragic factual history. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Unhappily married and uncomfortable with life among the British upper crust, Julia Sturges takes her two children and boards the Titanic for America. Her husband Richard also arranges passage on the doomed luxury liner in order to let him have custody of their two children. Their problems soon seem minor when the ship hits an iceberg.

Most realistic.......2007-09-15
Visited the Titanic in Halifax, Nova Scotia & the Tour Guide said this movie was a more real view of the actual sinking.
Was more than satisfied with this video
Should have sunk- instead of the Titanic!.......2007-09-06
This movie is historical drivel at its worst! It's full of glaring errors, and the story is more than trite.
If you can get past Robert Wagner singing the "Navaho Rag," then you can sit through anything.
Richard Basehart is supposed to be a defrocked inner-city priest, who manages to find the money to travel first class!
And that kid Norman! If he hadn't gone down with the ship, somebody would have probably drowned the little bugger!
Why does Audrey Dalton call Clifton Webb (who's supposed to be her father) "Angel?"
Don't buy it new if you do buy it!
The Best of All..........2007-06-03
the Titanic movies. I first saw this in the late '50s when I was nine or ten. My Titanic interest had developed after I saw the Hallmark Hall of Fame live broadcast of Walter Lord's "Night to Remember" when I was even younger. I have seen this movie so many times I can recite the dialogue and tell you all the flaws - there are a few - like the pictures hanging in the officers' dining room. They are all photos of ships built after the Titanic sank! Anyway, buy this one and appreciate it for the great acting, superb dialog and costumes.
The Old Titanic.......2007-03-12
I find the old pictures have a higher standard of acting, this CD reinforces my belief. The film is in black and white but this does not detract from the strength of the performances by Clifton Webb, Barbara Stanwyc and Audrey Dalton. I highly recommend this movie to those that appreciate good old fashioned entertainment; without gratuitous violence.
Fantastic.......2007-01-10
If you enjoy movies about the Titanic, Barbara Stanwyck, Clifton Webb, and Robert Wagner then you will like this movie. Not only do you have the drama surrounding the sinking of the ship but the story of survival for a family torn apart.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely Titanic.......2007-07-11
I have always been a keen observer of the history on the Titanic, and this DVD just adds to the majesty of its history. I'm always looking for more information on what really sunk the Titanic, and so when this video explored the prospect of the bottom being ripped open, and the evidence of that happening being displayed for the first time, it was something that just adds more to the real causes of her sinking. It had to be more than just the starboard side being ripped open, there had to be more internal damage, and this video does an excellent job of supporting that speculation. I whole heartidly endorse this history, and this video. It's very well produced, the photography is exceptional, and the theories and facts leave you wanting more information. I hope more is done to prove what happened to Titanic, but I also hope other explorers will leave this behemoth and her captive souls to rest in peace, undisturbed from further exploration.
A Real Eye Opener.......2006-05-24
I am here on this beautiful Island of Curacao in the Carribean.
There's an international Dive Festival Going on from May 20th, till May 26th 2006.
And John and Richie are here!!
Premiering the release of their DVD!! They showed it too us in 2 parts and all I can say is that it's the best thing on titanic I've ever seen !!
If you've never heard of Titanic, then where have you been living? One of history's most captivating tragedies, the sinking of the Titanic draws countless numbers to learn more about the catastrophe. That fateful trip is absolutely fascinating, and I've watched a great many documentaries about that famed ship. A glorious super liner, Titanic is perhaps more famous today than it was in 1912.
As a result, most of us know what led to its sinking, either from the movie or from documentaries. This latest entry into the fold from The History Channel, Titanic's Final Moments: Missing Pieces has a new postulation on the now generally accepted theory of the ship's demise. That current theory states that Titanic saw an iceberg straight in its path. It tried to turn to miss it, but the big ship clipped the side of the iceberg, tearing a gash or a series of small gashes along its side. Water flooded in, filling enough watertight compartments to cause her to go down. As remarkably shown in Titanic, the nose of the ship went under first, causing the stern to rise above the water. At some point, something caused the ship to split in half, causing the stern to crash back to the water. The nose then quickly went under, pulling the stern deep down to the bottom of the Atlantic.
Five years ago, an expedition to explore the wreckage made an interesting discovery south of the stern's debris field. They said they found "long strips of metal." Unfortunately, the submersible's camera equipment malfunctioned and they had no proof of what they saw. But this set in motion a new theory. Maybe these long strips were from the bottom of the ship. If so, then Titanic just didn't graze the side of the iceberg, but it actually ran over part of the iceberg too. We learn that an iceberg does not go straight down below the water (like a cliff); instead, the water causes the iceberg to form a shelf below the water. Hence, it's now theorized that Titanic somewhat ran aground on the iceberg. If so, in addition to the gashes on the side, maybe there was also significant damage on the bottom, explaining how the ship sank in less than three hours. If that were true, it could also explain why the front of the ship is relatively intact while the stern is crushed upon itself.
Now that I've told you all that, is there any reason to watch the special? Hell yeah!! The two-hour special shows you the 2005 expedition to look for these strips of metal to add proof to the theory. It's an interesting journey, one that's fun to watch to see what is or isn't found/learned. The expedition, once we get to the bits where the "long strips of metal" are either found or not found, is the most exciting piece on the DVD.
I liked the special. It is well done, just sit tight and keep your eyes open for on of the most exciting journeys down to explore the titanic.
Included on the disc are two bonus items. Starting things off is the wholly unforgettable, PR fluff piece "History in the Making: Titanic" (5 minutes). This is one of those filler pieces probably shown on The History Channel to get people to watch the show when it premiered.
Faring infinitely better is the second item, "History's Mysteries: Doomed Sisters of the Titanic" (42 minutes). This is a complete episode of History's Mysteries that details the unfortunate careers of the White Star Line's trio of sister ships, Olympic, Titanic, and Brittanic. This episode, without as much historical repetition, is fascinating and I learned much about the apparently cursed ships.
All in all, you get your money's worth, and it's surely some thing you'd like to add to your DVD collection!!
Amazon.com essential video
When the theatrical release of James Cameron's Titanic was delayed from July to December of 1997, media pundits speculated that Cameron's $200 million disaster epic would cause the director's downfall, signal the end of the blockbuster era, and sink Paramount Studios as quickly as the ill-fated luxury liner had sunk on that fateful night of April 14, 1912.

Far Superior to the Cameron Movie.......2007-08-24
The Cameron movie may have more realistic effects, but it is nothing more than a soap opera that happens to take place on the titanic, the focus is more the fictional soap opera plot rather that the event itself.
This movie while it has a few fictional plots, they are not the focus of the movie, the focus is what really happened and telling the story of the disaster rather than telling a fictional drama, it brings forth most of the things that took place that night though a few are not completely accurate. There is no clear cut star of the film, the star as it should be was the ship, with the actors getting small segments here and there. Bringing attention to the alice cleaver story is interesting too, but that appears to be a hoax, as it was not the same alice cleaver that sailed.
The DVD is pretty bad though, the first half the sound is not in time with the video and you can hear a person speak before his lips move.
Not a bad movie, if your not a teenage girl looking for a soap opera rather someone wanting to watch a titanic movie as a historical documentary.
That being said if you want to see the best titanic movie leave Hollywood and watch the black and white British film "A Night To Remember" this movie is the most accurate, soap opera free non fiction version that used first hand sources for their info, no fictional stories here, it just tells everything that is known about what happened. A must see!
Sappy but OK.......2007-07-16
The story we know. Ship goes down and many die. Tragic. The cast is good (though Peter Gallagher bugs me). I like Marilu Henner as an actress but physically she was totally wrong for her part as Molly Brown. The rape scene I agree was totally unnecessary. But if you are a collector of Titanic themed movies, its a nice one to have.
an OK mini-series , an OK disc.......2007-03-13
while not in the same league as the blockbuster movie, this t.v. version isn't that bad. it is a little slow at first but the second part(the sinking ) is well done and is even filmed in almost real time. not great but not as poor as some think. check it out for yourself, at $6.95 what have you got to lose.
Music.......2006-11-29
Is the music in this movie as touching as the music in James Cameron's film?
The problem with this movie..........2006-05-15
...is that it is so heavily dramatic from beginning to end. It's so "black and white" if you get my meaning, the story doesn't manage to involve the viewer (me at least). Where James Cameron managed to bring the characters in his 97th masterpiece to life (we got to really "know" Jack and Rose), and that was why it was hard to breathe at the end of it, in this movie the characters look like they've already hit an iceberg long before the ship leaves port, and you'd like to put them out of their misery yourself. I realize that this is no big budget movie, but an impressive cast list such as here should count too. And this is a bad recepy for telling a gripping story about the disaster Titanic indeed was. The ship sinks, and you sigh "Finally!"...
I've suffered myself through a couple of books involving the fate of the ship making the exact same mistake. Most readers and viewers know what will happen, the travellers aboard the Titanic do (and did!) not -and this really makes a big point.
I must add the acting here does not look very inspired (is Zeta-Jones an Academy-winner?). George C. Scott could have played the captain in James Camerons' masterpiece instead, the only actor here who delievers. And it's nearly wasted.
So if you're a Titanic-fan (or call it what you want) this would be worth a peek, but it is nothing remembarable.

Titanic's Contraversy.......2007-03-10
Such a huge contraversy surrounds Titanic and her treasures. The right to salvage or not to salvage. This DVD explains Dr. Ballard's side of the debate. When actually meeting him and getting to talk with him, he truely believes that Titanic is a memorial and should be deemed as such, as an underwater museum. And his plans for the future are fascinating. This is a great documentary and really makes you think about the current situation with Titanic and the right to salvage along with Titanic's current state of condition.
Not Enough Dr. Ballard or Titanic. Is not what it bills itself as........2006-01-24
Titanic Revealed.
I just purchased the DVD of this production. After watching the entire feature along with extras I have to admit I'm a bit disappointed.
From the way this DVD is promoted you expect a documentary of Dr. Ballard going back to the Titanic to go over what the grave robbers have done to it and document its condition. Sadly, we get that but in much less quantity that I expected. What we do often get is mini segments about Titanic collectors, super secret Navy missions, commentaries from people within the community and a debate about whether salvaging is appropriate. The interview with Ken Marschall is especially akward.
The segement about Dr. Ballard's "super secret" mission I think was being over dramatic and unecessary. Many people knew of his dives on the Thresher and the Scorpion right before the Titanic. So thats not some huge revelation as to why he got to search for the ship in 1985.
Personally, I was hoping for something akin to the National Geographic Special "Secrets of the Titanic." While filmed in 1985 with less sophisticated cameras. It honored the ship with no Jim Cameron style fluff and detours. That 1985 documentary stands out against later videos - it has heart, its human and it focuses on the ship. The Titanic is the star; not a sub, not a film maker. Dr. Ballard's original piece humanizes the wreck. The humanization is one of the most powerful elements of the Titanic story.
In the final anaylsis this production does not live up to how it hypes itself. It should be titled "Titanic Debates with some footage of Bob Ballard again at the Titanic." That is far more honest as to what this DVD is. Only the special section only partially redeems itself. It though is way too short and recycles video from the main feature.
I agree with Dr. Ballard it is terrible the way the wreck is being plundered for profit. Titanic is a graveyard and should be treated as such - with great respect. It should be honored and allowed to rest without vultures picking at the carcass. More than one Titanic survivor felt that way.
For the price (almost $18) stay away from this DVD. If it were $5 I'd say its fine. However, for the hefty price tag for an hour and 15 minutes of a presentation that doesn't live up to its billing. Don't waste your money.
A Sequel to National Geographic's 'Secrets of the Titanic'.......2005-03-14
I saw this documentry last summer on I think... the Discovery Channel. In it, Dr. Ballard returned to the titanic to see how she would appear, what was still in good condition, etc. Unfortunately, between 1986 and 2004, many artifacts were taken from the wreckage much to the disappointment of Ballard. I was fascinated by his new findings upon his return. What was most sad was the fact that someone had taken the plaque he had placed on the titanic in memory of those who were lost. Basically this is a part two of his first documentary that he did back in 1986 for National Geographic called "Secrets of the Titanic". It's a really great DVD for those who are fascinated by this historical disaster.
