The introduction of color takes a bit of the magic out of Bewitched, but adorable toddler Tabitha brings her own special enchantment to this third season, which earned Emmy nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series. Also nominated were Elizabeth Montgomery as sophisticated, albeit domesticated, witch Samantha, Agnes Morehead as her disapproving mother Endora, and Marion Lorne as addled Aunt Clara, whose mis-spellings wreak havoc in the Stephens household, as when she unwittingly conjures up Ben Franklin in "My Friend Ben." As the season begins, "typical average baby" Tabitha reveals her heretofore-dormant supernatural powers. In the next episode, "The Moment of Truth," Darrin (Dick York) is distressed to find out about his daughter. "Remember 'normal'?" he wails to his wife. "We were going to have a normal married life" Though one laments that Serena is missing in action, the return of Bernard Fox as Dr. Bombay (in "There's Gold in Them Thar Pills") and Paul Lynde's practical joker Uncle Arthur are always welcome, even if Arthur's feud with Endora in "Endora Moves in for a Spell" never reaches the comic heights of season 2's "The Joker Is a Card" (the Yagazuzie Zim episode).

Other venerable character actors cast their distinctive spells, including Estelle Winwood ("Hold Me, Touch Me" in the original The Producers) and Reta Shaw (Mary Poppins) as Endora's sisters in "Witches and Warlocks Are My Favorite Things; Marty Ingalls as a rival ad agency spy in "Dangerous Diaper Dan"; Norman "Mr. Roper" Fell as Sigmund Freud(!) in "I'd Rather Twitch Than Fight"; and, in a bizarre cameo, Willie Mays as one of Endora's Halloween party guests in "Twitch or Treat." ("You mean he's a...," Darrin stammers. "The way he hits home runs?" Samantha replies, "What else?"). Sandra Gould, replacing Alice Pearce, joins the cast as busybody neighbor Gladys Kravitz. One of the season's most enjoyable episodes is "A Most Unusual Wood Nymph," which allowed York to break out of his confounded husband character to portray the lusty Darrin the Bold, a cursed 14th-century ancestor. And with the sight of the ravishing Montgomery in a castle-maid costume, who needs extras in this otherwise charmed four-disc set? --Donald Liebenson

5 out of 5 stars Not bothered or bewildered.......2007-08-11

Bewitched is one of the top half hours on TV - now or then. The
characters are consistently funny. Dick York is the better Darrin.
The series is for all ages. Top notch.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL WONDERFUL WONDERFUL.......2007-05-15

Great Acting - Not Great looking actors!
Oh how I long for the 70's!
This collection is wonderful - A TV show that I can watch over and over and over and still LOVE IT!
Big Fan of this VERY FUN and FUNNY SHOW - Bewitched!
I say Buy it, You'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars Bewitched is Fun & Clever........2007-05-14

This classic comedy series was fun and clever - Elizabeth Montgomery is always charming, and has to fix up all the mischief around her and her exasperated husband. Even the kooky neighbor lady is suspicious, while her doubting husband is funny. Magical mischievous things happen, and you can believe. You cannot watch this show on TV currently (except maybe in wee-hours). So you should buy these DVDs, The show is a fantasy like Melissa Joan Hart's TV shows as a Teenage Witch. And you can rent Nicole Kidman's recent Bewitched movie, to sample the fun.

5 out of 5 stars bewitched third season.......2007-04-10

I have always liked the Bewitched series, since I watched it with my family when I was little. I always remembered how upbeat and funny it was. And of course I thought ( and still do) Samantha was so beautiful! I had a crush on her.
I have a lot of the series on VHS over the past several years from the shows being on a variety of channels. Having them on a DVD format is of course the ultimate quality and no commercials! I like the added features that are on some of them. They do a great job of bringing back the memories!
I am looking forward to the fifth season to come out on DVD!!

4 out of 5 stars STAY TUNED FOR "BEWITCHED"; NEXT: IN COLOR.......2007-03-19

The Third Season of BEWITCHED was actually a season of several important "Firsts." The Third Season was the first season of episodes shot in color. Erin and Diane Murphy also join the cast in the role of little toddler Tabitha.

THIRD SEASON HIGHLIGHTS:

In the episode "Witches And Warlocks Are A Few Of My Favorite Things", Tabitha's witchly powers are tested on a weekend. Samantha ( Elizabeth Montgomery) explains that, although it is the weekend, her husband Darrin (Dick York) has to work. Aunt Hagatha (Reta Shaw) happily replies, "Good. Humans emit such a low-grade frequency they upset my instruments."
Samantha at first tries to avoid telling Darrin that Tabitha has inherited her special powers. Later, Samantha and Darrin have a hectic time trying to keep the truth about Tabitha from Darrin's boss Larry and his wife Louise (David White and Kasey Rogers.)
"BEWITCHED": THE COMPLETE THIRD SEASON" is best as a perfect showcase for the talents of wonderful Marion Lorne as sweet, bumbling, delightfully vague Aunt Clara, who causes much unintentional havoc in the Stephens household. Clara causes a massive Statewide electrical blackout. The Stephens' residence remains the only household for miles with the lights miraculously still on! Clara accidentally zaps both Queen Victoria and Ben Franklin back from the past. The two historical people become two very "SURPRISE!" houseguests. Clara also gives Larry and Louise "Accidental Twins" when she magically creates an identical double of their son.

Samantha travels back in time to save Darrin from a curse in "A Most Unusual Wood Nymph"; where she meets Darrin's ancestor Darrin The Bold, also played by Dick York. In "Bewitched, Bothered and Infuriated," Darrin and Samantha travel back in time to prevent Larry from having a terrible accident. All this occurs because of some mis-information from Aunt Clara. The Witches Society finally has enough of Clara's magical mis-fires, and, in the outstanding episode "The Trial And Error Of Aunt CLara", they seek to excommunicate her. Samantha immediately leaps to her defense; but she only nearly avoids disaster as she simultaneously tries to defend her beloved Aunt and keep Darrin busy in the den so he won't find out what exactly is going on in the living room!!

* Episode #101: The Crone Of Cawdor: (3-16-67): This is a strangely weird, mystical and delightful episode. Dorothy Neuman plays a 500-year old crone who switches places with Darrin's attractive client Terry Warbell (Julie Gregg). The Crone hopes that Darrin will kiss her; thereby she will steal Darrin's youth! The transformed and confused Terry shows up at the Kravitz's house. Gladys (Sandra Gould) telephones Samantha about the strange visitor. Gladys says, "I have a feeling she's YOUR kind of people."

*Episode 106: "Nobody but a Frog Knows How To Live" (4-27-67): Character actor John Fiedler makes a memorable guest appearance as Fergus, a "human frog" who hopes that Samantha can unhex a hex and turn him back into a frog.

In the last episode of the Third Season, (Episode 107:: 5-4-67) titled "There's Gold In Them There Pills," Bernard Fox makes his first appearance as Dr. Bombay. The wacky-quaky witch doctor finds an instant miracle cure for the common cold; but his cure has an hilarious side-effect on mere mortals!

My stars! The first, and perhaps most magical, season of Bewitched still casts an enchanting spell. For escapist fantasy, this series, no doubt inspired by the play Bell, Book and Candle, broke significant television ground. The Stephens were sitcoms' first mixed marriage. Advertising executive Darrin Stephens (Dick York) was mortal, and wife Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery) was a witch. According to a retrospective segment included on this four-disc set, the Stephenses were also the first couple to sleep in one bed! And Samantha's mother, Endora (the venerable Agnes Morehead), and father, Maurice (Maurice Evans, most popularly known as Dr. Zaius in the original Planet of the Apes, were TV's first separated couple. Surely, Darrin did for advertising what Dick Van Dyke's Rob Petrie did for comedy writing. And nose-twitching Samantha certainly gave Mary Tyler Moore's Laura Petrie a run for the money in the sexy suburbanite sweepstakes. This high-concept series' saving grace was that Darrin insisted that Samantha not engage in any "hocus-pocus." But in this first season, she would be compelled to use her extraordinary powers to right social wrongs (such as derogatory-witch stereotypes in the Halloween episode "The Witches Are Out"), champion the underdog (a lonely boy whose overprotective mother won't let him play baseball in "Little Pitchers Have Big Fears"), or to restore a troubled boy's Christmas spirit ("A Vision of Sugar Plums"). Or, she might just want to turn the tables on an insulting former girlfriend of Darrin's (the pilot, "Darrin, Take This Witch, Samantha").

York and Montgomery had palpable chemistry. They also received able support by a stellar ensemble of character actors. Alice Pearce and Marion Lorne would earn Emmys for their signature roles as busybody neighbor Mrs. Kravitz and dotty Aunt Clara, respectively. George Tobias portrayed oblivious. long-suffering Abner Kravitz, with David White as Darrin's boss, Larry Tate. In today's more PC climate, Bewitched may offend the "ban Harry Potter" crowd. But for baby boomers especially, this inaugural set will happily conjure up vintage television memories. --Donald Liebenson

5 out of 5 stars The Best, Wonderful!!!.......2007-08-25

This was such a good birthday gift. I've always loved the series. These are the best of the best. The picture has been remastered to its original beauty, and the sound is clear and crisp. There are 36 episoded on these 4 dvds.

Here are some (just some are listed) of my favorite episodes:
1. Darrin and Samantha get married. On their wedding night, she tells Darrin that she is a witch. Later, Samantha gets even with Darrin's ex-girlfriend

My book is Dreams in August: Life, Love, and Cerebellar Ataxia
2. Samantha and Endora (Samantha's mother) look at the house that Darrin has chosen.
4. Endora (Agnes Moorehead) meets Darrin.
6. June Lockhardt plays an over-protective mother.
7. Darrin's client urges him to use an ugly witch in a campaign, but Samantha and Aunt Clara convince him to reconsider.
8. Samantha and Endora go to Paris for lunch and are seen by Darrin's boss (Larry Tate).
10. Maurice (Samantha's father) meets Darrin, and Endora has to intervene in order to avoid a family feud.
12. Darrin thinks that Samantha is pregnant. Darrin imagines what their children would be like-mortals or witches. Maureen McCormack (pre-Brady Bunch) plays "little Endora".
14. Samantha meets her in-laws for the first time. Aunt Clara whips up dinner.
15. Samantha takes Michael (Billy Mummy) and Darrin to meet Santa Claus.
18. Darrin suspects that Samantha is a client's cat.
20. Darrin supects that witchcraft is ruining his chances at work, but the fault lies within himself.
21. Samantha turns a cat into a model for Darrin's campaign, but realizes that she has created a monster.
24. Endora changes herself into Samantha, and Endora likes the results.
26. Paul Lynde plays a nervous driving instructor. This episode is super funny.
27. Aunt Clara becomes a popular babysitter for mortal friends of Darrin and Samantha. She gets in trouble with the authorities (police) after she tells the children that she is a witch.
29. Gladys Kravitz thinks that she has magical powers.
32. Gladys and Abner Kravitz decide to get a divorce. Samantha helps them to realize that they are still in love.
35. Samantha and Endora help out the proprietor of a restaurant (Marios") and a client of Darrin's resents their aid to his competitor.
36. An elf (Artie Johnson) thinks that being married to a mortal is dangerous for Samantha.

5 out of 5 stars THE TOP 10 SHOW OF THE SIXTIES.......2007-08-18

WHAT CAN BE SAID. THIS IS ONE OF THE FUNNIEST SHOWS OF THE 60'S. GROWING UP TO THIS FAIRY TALE COMEDY WAS A LOT OF FUN. EVERY WEEK MUMMY AND I WOULD LOOK FORWARD TO SEE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN TO DARRIN WHEN ENDORA POPPED-IN. ENDORA WAS OUR FAVORITE. THE ARISTOCRATIC WITCH, JUST LIKE MY MUM.
ABNER AND GLADYS KRAVITZ, FULL OF LAUGHS. THE EPISODE WITH THE SOON TO BE UNCLE ARTHUR, PAUL LYNDE IS HILARIOUS. HE IS SAMANTHA'S DRIVING INSTRUCTOR. THE MEETING OF SAM'S FATHER MAURICE EVANS, VERY FUNNY AS WELL. SO FAR, I HAVE SEASON 1 AND 2. SEASON 3 AND 4 ARE NEXT. GET IT. ITS FUNNY! IF YOU SAW THE MOVIE, WHICH IS GARBAGE. DO NOT COMPARE. THEIR IS NO COMPARISON!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-07-20

I love this show!! Very entertaining....although, Darren is a character who isn't turned into a toad nearly as often as he should be!!!

5 out of 5 stars Sheer Magic.......2007-05-25

Well, this is an awesome show for one! The first season, filled with Samantha trying to adapt to being a non-witch, and in every episode failing in someway. The ups and downs of her struggle make everyone love her even more.

I for one, love this show and I can't wait until the rest of the series is released on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Job Sony!.......2007-05-07

I was happy to see that the first episode was left in Black and White. Of course, we were not among the few who had gotten color television sets when they first came out but I was glad that they did not colorize the Black and White episodes. I just ordered the last of the whole series and I can't wait to get it. Do yourself a favor, spend some time reading the customer reviews and only purchase from the studios that own the rights to the original prints of the shows. I got burned by purchasing another show from another site and it was horrible. I ended up giving it away. If you liked Bewitched, THE WHOLE SERIES IS A MUST HAVE!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Solid and entertaining, but not brilliant.......2007-09-17

It's not quite Stout, but it's great TV. Some pros:

* Outstanding recreation of the brownstone and everything in it. This includes tiny details like Wolfe's black silk coverlet, the fact that he wears yellow shirts (an improvement over the pilot movie), most aspects of the office (except for the blue walls and the globe, which isn't modern like the one in the books, though it is suitably huge).

* Chaykin becomes a superb Wolfe over the course of the series. He's too smug and calm in the pilot movie, too loud and obnoxious in early season one, but by season two he has settled in and gotten it on the nose, shifting through Wolfe's various stylistic gears accurately. "The Silent Speaker" in particular is really good -- the best of all the stories, I think.

* Even though he was a good bit older than Archie at the time, Hutton appears a bit boyish for the role, but he captures Archie's spirit and basic charm well, and I like the interaction with Chakin -- not an easy thing to recreate from the books at all. The heart of these books is Archie's narrative appeal, and there isn't enough of that, but they only had eighty minutes to tell an entire novel, after all.

* Kari Matchett is quite good in many different female roles, particularly as Archie's girlfriend Lily Rowan and the nightclub singer Julie Jaquette. She actually plays both of these very different roles in the same episode ("Death of a Doxy"), showcasing her versatility.

Some cons:

* Stagey, overdramatic acting by some of the supporting cast give certain episodes a campy quality which Stout didn't intend.

* Campiness is also apparent in the sets at client businesses, which have a simplistic, fake quality in several cases. This has a jarring effect next to the extreme realism of the brownstone, and I can only guess limited budgets are the root cause.

* Women are frequently portrayed as hysterical, childlike creatures with only a thin veneer of adult maturity which will evaporate under moderate stress. Granted, Stout often portrayed them in this way also, but it seems exaggerated.

Still, they did a nice job all in all. I regret the Zeck stories weren't covered, since they would have been particularly good.

5 out of 5 stars Great series, now on DVD........2007-08-14

We loved this series when it was on the air, but we only caught the last several episodes. I was glad to see this whole series in one set. It was worth it to us...

5 out of 5 stars Nero Wolfe - The Complete Classic Whodunit Series.......2007-07-29

I must have watched each of these stories at least six times and I will turn to them when I want to see a truly well done TV show. I understand it was discontinued because it was too expensive, I suppose compared to the ratings it earned. It may not please the 18-29 year olds, however, for me these are the best DVDs I own and I own a lot of them. All of the acting is good, especially Maury Chaykin and Kari Matchett.

5 out of 5 stars I only wish there were more..........2007-07-15

Shame on A&E for canceling this excellent series! With the talent of Hutton, Chaylkin and the revolving set of strong character actors this was one of the best shows on television. Although the core characters (Wolfe, Goodwin, Fritz, Kramer, etc...) were consistently played by the same actors, the varying supporting characters were played by a revolving cast of actors. This meant that the client of one episode might be the villain in the next. Although some have complained that this was confusing, I think that it was an original idea that worked quite well. In fact, it reminded me of an acting troupe that would change roles for each stage play.
IF you are a fan of the original Rex Stout novels, you will love these shows. The characters, dialogue, and general feel of the series is faithful to the original stories. Conversely, if you enjoy the show you will enjoy the books which are very similar.

5 out of 5 stars Nero Wolfe - The Complete Series.......2007-05-13

If you're a Nero Wolfe fan you'll love these DVD's. The actors portraying their characters (Wolfe, Archie, Inspector Cramer) are just as I pictured them. The story lines and dialogue are true to the original novels and short stories.

5 out of 5 stars FUNNY!! You must see this!!!.......2007-09-15

Overall, the colorization was great. These episodes were definately enhanced by color. The colorization was too brilliant in the first episode, but it made it funnier.
Here is a listing of my favorite episodes:
1. Aunt Clara goofs again and turns Darrin into a chimpanzee.
2. Endora casts a spell on Darrin so that he feels the symtons of pregnancy. This was hilarious-a Dick York best!!
5. This is Uncle Arthur's first appearance, and the colorization enhances the entertainment. This episode is the second (the first was as a driving instructor in season 1) episode to show Paul Lynde's huge comedic talents.
6. Samantha looses her powers when she is exposed to a Black Peruvian Rose. Aunt Clara decides on the cure.
7. Endora puts a spell on Darrin so that he slowly turns into a werewolf. Maureen McCormick (pre-Brady Bunch) plays the young Endora.
10. Endora changes Darrin into a youth when she wonders what her grand child will look like.
11. Aunt Clara pretends to have full and reliable magic powers to impress an old boyfriend.
12. Samantha baby-sits for a friend's 10-year old son, but doesn't tell Darrin that the child is a warlock.
13. Endoiira gives the Tate's a teddy bear for their son, but Darrin assums that the toy is Larry. (Darrin thinks that Endora has turned Larry into the teddy bear, but she hasn't.)
14. Endora gives Darrin a statute that causes mortals to speack only their true thoughts.
15. A nostalgic look at the Christmas from the year before, when Samantha takes Darrin and an orphan (Billy Mumy) to meet Santa Claus.
17. Samantha employs Naiomi (later, the actress who plays Aunt Ezmeralda) as a maid.
18. The Stephen's daughter, Tabitha, is born. Darrin mistakes Cousin Serena (also Elizabeth Montgomery) for a grown-up version of the baby.
19. The Kravitzs' give Tabitha a share of stock. When it rises in value, Darrin suspects that the child is a witch.
20. Another nostalgic journey begins as Samantha reminds Darrin about the night that she met his parents-and Aunt Clara conjured up a fancy dinner.
23. Endora gives Darrin, unbeknownst to him, three wishes. He accidentally wishes to become Larry for a day.
25. Samantha changes a race horse into a person.
27. Samantha helps a leprachaun recover his pot of gold from the home of a prospective client of Darrin's.
28. An argument between Darrin aned Larry goes way too far, so Louis and Samantha get them back together.
29. Samantha is hexed by a witch debunker (played by the actor who would play Dr. Bombay later in the series), and Endora helps find the cure.
30. A private detective, Charlie Leach, discovers that Samantha is a witch.
31. Charlie Leach blackmails Samantha.
33. Endora divides Darrin. His fun-loving half goes to Florida with Samantha, while his hard-working half stays home and works on a campaign.
34. A lovesick warlock (Richard Dreyfus) tries to win his former babysitter's, Samantha, affection.
36. Endora sends Samantha back in time to find out if Darrin would have married her if he had known that she was a witch before the marriage.
38. Samantha helps Gladys' brother, Louis Gubber, gain the courage to play his violin before an audience. (This is the last episode with the first Mrs. Kravitz, Alice Pearce. Alice Pearce died of ovarian cancer soon after the season.)

5 out of 5 stars Bewitched on DVD.......2007-09-14

I can't tell you how wonderful it is to watch a great show like Bewitched again. There is too much reality TV today and with reality so difficult to deal with it is such a relief to get away from it and watch a fantasy situation like Bewitched. It's funny, it's cleverly written, and the charactors are very well devoloped. Anyone who gets these DVD's will not be sorry.

4 out of 5 stars bewitched.......2007-07-19

I love bewitched. IT's amazing how they did the stunts and funny that you can see the wires every now and then.

5 out of 5 stars Smart & Funny.......2007-05-08

This is my #1 fav tv comedy of ALL TIME (#2 is 'everybody loves raymond').

Bewitched's 2nd season is even better than the 1st with the birth of Stephens' baby girl Tabitha and introduction to the characters Serena and Uncle Arthur (who actually appeared in Season 1 as the driving instructor, which added more interesting stories and dynamics to the show.

I have purchased this set about a month or so ago and finished watching them in 2 days (I just couldn't stop!!) and I have re-watched them at least 5x so far. In addition to the humor and entertainment value, i find this show also being educational. very often, the dialogs make reference to historical events/person as well as some older 'jargons' that people no longer use these days.

overall, i am very happy with my purchase (I bought all 4 seasons) and can't wait for the rest to come out!

5 out of 5 stars Samantha & the gang keep you laughing........2007-05-04

I still love Bewitched always have always will. The show seems never to age. It was actually funny & sweet so I had to get this season as well as the others. It's worth the price , not only for me to see my favorite show again but because now with kids of my own they like it & it's a safe show for kids. The dvds themselves were good quality. For me it was a good buy all the way around.

It's appropriate that this extravaganza of lowbrow cinema had its premiere at the 2006 Cinevegas Film Festival, because what happens in Artie Lange's Beer League should stay in Artie Lange's Beer League. Lange is most recognizable for his stint in the Mad TV ensemble, but probably more idolized by the people who will get wild kicks from his leading man debut as the resident guest-baiter and booze/scatological/flatulence/sex joke expert on Howard Stern's radio show. Those are the same kinds of laughs this movie relies on in telling the wisp of a story about a bunch of New Jersey boneheads whose lives are fulfilled by softball games and the beer-guzzling that goes on before, during, and after. Artie's team is proud to be in the bottom ranks of their league, especially when brawls erupt at games against their slick, archrival team. Artie and the rest of his team know these arrogant jerks in their immaculate black (of course) uniforms are unbeatable, so it's only natural that Artie thinks its easier to just beat the hell out of them. The local cop who's had to deal with both teams finally gets so angry with the escalating brawls that he issues an ultimatum: Whichever team loses the season has to disband and never play on the league again. It's kind of an utterly tasteless version of The Bad News Bears for people who like their movies vulgar, offensive, misogynistic, and often really funny in spite of it all. Some of the subplots and supporting players include Ralph Macchio as one of Artie's childhood friends who's about to get married (cue depraved bachelor party scene with lots of topless babes), Mary Birdsong from Reno 911! as a kooky waitress, and a delightful turn by crusty character actor Seymour Cassel as Artie's teammate Dirt, who may be old but loves booze, fisticuffs, and debauchery as much as anyone. For some reason, Artie's foul-mouthed slobbery attracts a local Jersey girl (Cara Buono), even though he's jobless and still lives with his mom (Laurie Metcalf, who should get some kind of good sport award). The buffoonery doesn't just stop with the movie. There's also more than two hour of bonus material tailored for Artie Lange enthusiasts who probably number more than you'd think -- whether they'd ever admit it or not. --Ted Fry

5 out of 5 stars Great Beer Movie!!!.......2007-08-31

Saw this on Comedy Central a while back. Artie does a good job being a Drunk Softball player. The Old Guy in the Film is Hilarious. It Even has The Karate Kid. Now, That's Good enough reason to Buy. Definatley in the League with, Beerfest, Old School, Dazed & Confused, Super Troopers, Animal House, Detroit Rock City, Wedding Crashers, Anchorman, Van Wilder, Road Trip, Black Sheep, ETC. You Know, Stupid Funny. If You Liked Beerfest. Do Not Miss Out On This Movie!

4 out of 5 stars Big Stern Fan.......2007-08-23

I am a sirius subscriber. I had a bad feeling about this movie, but wanted to watch as a fan of the Stern show. Artie's talents are much better used on the radio, than this movie. It's one liner, after one liner. The production value is quite low. Ralph Machio may as well be part of the set design, because his part is so miniscule. The story is non-existent. And the comedy is at the 4th grade level. But there are a few big laughs. Anyways, for fans of the radio show, this is probably a must see, and I'm happy with my purchase. But for non-listeners my rating drops to a 2 out of 5.

1 out of 5 stars Horrendous, Atrocious, Horrible...See where this is going?.......2007-08-22

Artie Lange...It must have been the Whiskey talking! Beer League is undoubtedly one of the worst films ever produced. The acting is third rate and the talent is D-List, at best. Ralph Macchio is alive and a supporting actor to Artie Lange...Dude, time to hang it up.

Plot: Lovable Slob/Loser who lives at home with his mom takes on high school rival (greasy haired guido/lothario) for the rights to stay in their softball league.

Pros: None, except for seeing "The Pitching Machine" in action.

Cons: Everything...especially acting, dialogue, casting...etc.

Bottom Line: Skip this one and start your own beer league.

3 out of 5 stars Funny, but..........2007-08-01

I'm a Howard Stern fan, and I'm familiar with Artie's work, but i just don't find him to be as funny as other people do. The script is written on about an 8th grade play level, and the acting was choppy.
It's good for a few laughs, but I would waste my money buying it. See if you can borrow it from one of your friends.

4 out of 5 stars Crude, but funny.......2007-07-17

Beer League is a RIOT. Not something to watch with your kids.

Think Animal House but cruder, and with baseball imnstead of books.

5 out of 5 stars Casper's evil cousin unleashed........2007-07-16

When i first saw The Frightners back when it was released theatrically I knew I was watching a film by a complete nut/brilliant filmaker. Who would have know that the director of this film would go on to make the Lord of the Rings trilogy and King Kong. It's evident in The Frightners that Jackson is a director with great assurance in his work. I'm just sad that this film didn't find an audience when it was first released. But now that Jackson is a big league director this film will not only profit from its cult followers, but from a new generation of viewers. This new director's cut is filled with spectacular unseen footage that is totally necessary and doesn't just make the film longer for show. The HD-DVD presentation is crisp and flawless and has plenty of extras. Sit back and enjoy Pet6er Jackson's difinitive version of his pre-Lord of the Rings gem.

5 out of 5 stars HD-DVD version.......2007-06-22

Suffice to say that if you are into HD and especially HD-DVD and have a big screen, I mean 100" or above then this is why you got into HD.

The video transfer is superb, a couple of very minor film artifacts here and there but nothing to write home about.

The audio transfer is also a knockout.

Just get it you will not be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Very good film and a good disc.......2007-06-17

I'm not going to comment on the film itself as you can read up on the film elsewhere but i'll let you know a little about the HD DVD disc itself. If your in the UK, the disc works perfectly on my Xbox 360 Add On so don't worry about buying from the US.

On the disc, there is the film itself (14 minutes extra as it's a director's cut), peter jackson's (first) feature commentary and also a trailer. There is also a 240 minute documentary about the making of the film from start to finish. I started watching it last night not realising how long it was, so i had to turn it off and i'll watch the rest tonight. Nice Layout of the disc (same as any other Universal disc) and the quality of the film is great.

I've not seen this compared to the Standard Def version of the special edition so i cannot compare them, but the HD DVD version is definately one i'd recommend.

Hope this helps...

Amazon.com essential video

Glenda Jackson is majestic in the six-video miniseries from the BBC, Elizabeth R. Covering the entire reign of Elizabeth I, from her struggles with her half-sister Mary just before being crowned as queen to her death in 1603, the series profiles the life of the Virgin Queen in detail--and with historical accuracy--not possible in the as beautiful, but much shorter, theatrical release, Elizabeth. Religious conflicts, her struggle over the execution of her cousin Mary, Queen of Scots, battles with Spain, court politics, and of course her flirtations with Robert Dudley (portrayed as an almost-comical fop by Robert Hardy) and her decision to remain unmarried are just some of the highlights of this magnificently costumed and finely acted piece. Jackson skillfully captures the capricious moods and incredible intellect of the queen who defied the pope and the conventions of the time as a strong-willed woman, and characters from textbooks--Sir Francis Bacon, Sir Walter Raleigh, King Phillip II--come vividly to life. Elizabeth R (and for those not in the know, the "R" is for "Regina") is a splendid melding of history and entertainment, and as thorough as this series is, you will still long for more. --Jenny Brown

5 out of 5 stars Elizabeth R.......2007-09-17

Superbly acted, historically accurate(!) and one of the Masterpiece Theatre's finest moments all around: Cast, costumes, staging.

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTE PERFECTION--*BEST* I EVER SEEN.......2007-08-20

I grew up watching this. I loved it. I remember seeing it every one to three years on the PBS-I watched it gladly whenever they offered it. I missed it when they quit showing it. Sad. I must have seen ELIZABETH R at least two dozen times. I LOVED IT AND NEVER GOT TIRED OF IT. You can imagine my joy when I learned it was put out on DVD. So yes, I own the DVD. I must have watched it about 6 times :-)
Point is, you never get tired of it. Glenda Jackson was extremely superb and to forget the fact *it is the most historically accurate ever put out on television*. I love all the specials the DVD has to offer. It will also suprise you throughout her life, death hung over her head--even arrested and put into the tower, her half sister seen Elizabeth as a threat; Catholics vs. Protestants. Elizabeth also, miraculously, survived the pox. Even these days the pox is near fatal even with our medical advances. Amazing lady, and a survivor in the purest sense. No wonder she still is regarded as the most admired of all governmental leaders throughout history.

5 out of 5 stars Glenda Jackson.......2007-06-27

I have always wanted to own this series. BBC always asked too much.
Amazon had the low price and I took it. Glad to add this to my dvd library.

5 out of 5 stars As Good as I Remembered!.......2007-05-13

I remember loving this series when it aired on Masterpiece Theater in the 70's. After recently seeing Helen Mirren's portrayal of Elizabeth I, I became nostalgic for Glenda Jackson's version. It did not disappoint! Glenda is, and always will be, the quintessential Bess! Sure, the sets seem a little high school drama production by today's standards, but in every other way it has stood the test of time.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece Theater masterpiece.......2007-03-09

Glenda Jackson was fantastic in the role of Elizabeth I from a young girl to her death after a 44 or so year reign. Absolutely believable and a series I enjoyed when it was on Masterpiece Theater and will always enjoy. The interviews with contemporary Glenda Jackson, MP is very interesting also. Highly recommend it!

Brendan Fraser plays a student attending a wealthy boarding school on a football scholarship in the 1950s. When the other kids find out he's Jewish--a fact he's been hiding--his fortunes and relationships instantly change. The film is pretty much what one would expect with that scenario: a story of bigotry, conflict, the hero trying to hang on. In the end, good intentions are the driving force of the movie, but it is not much more than the sum of its obvious parts. Directed by Dick Wolf, creator of television's Law and Order. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very good movie........2007-02-22

This was a good chance to see these excellent actors when they were just getting started. I enjoyed it very much.

5 out of 5 stars surprising good film.......2007-02-01

The film "SCHOOL TIES" is about a jewish boy who gets the chance to go to an elite prep school; it is set in the 1950's.
He has one "problem"- he is a JEW!
At first he fits in easily and the others like him because he is really nice and cooperative.
So he decides to keep this an secret...
This goes on until a jealous boy forces it out in the open.
Since this happened everything has been changing- only because of his jewish background!

The act is actually quite simpel.
Someone with a secret comes to a new school.
Afterwards the secret makes a big and finally everyone bully him...
But it is absolutely not boring, this film is really good made!

Good actors, interesting dialogues, many wordly wisdoms etc....

The movie covers subjects which concerm us all- old and young people- like the problem with racism, ostracism of minorities, schemes and other bad things.

3 out of 5 stars Good film with deficiences.......2007-02-01

The film school ties is about about a jewish,middle-class boy who gets the chance to attent a prep school.By hyding his ethnic origin problemes start.

The film has got a good story line. The conflict between David and his classmates because of his Jewishness prompt to think and deal with such a critical theme. But waht i didnt like is the fact, that Davis is been left all alone,e.g. when Davi should get flunk out of the school because of cheating.Another point i didnt like is the ending, just boring. The scene where Charlie sits in this car and talks to David for the last time...I think this is stupid stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Nice film!!.......2007-02-01

I watched the film in my english-lesson and I've to say, it's so fascinating! the main plot is very well acted. Also the subjects "Jews" and "anti-Semitism" is very good personated. Only the scene in which the pupils hang up a swastika, is in my oppinion a bit starkly....

Also I would say, the actors are selected very good, they fit with their rols very well.
I would say, the film is:

-very interessting
-educating
-clarifying

so, at the end, I can recommend this film to every person who likes this types of films.

Best wishes from Germany!

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Made, Well Acted, Sensitively Written - A Classic.......2006-12-08

This movie is definitely made "the way they used to make 'em," as some would say - and most reviewers do not mention that Dick Wolf, of "Law and Order" fame, is the creator of the story, which concerns a Jewish high school boy getting the golden opportunity to excel in sports and academics at an elite boarding school. It's superbly made - the music by Maurice Jarre, one of the great film composers - is just one of the stand outs of this terrific film. The acting is genuine, heart felt, and strong. I wish Brendan Fraser had made more films like this, playing a real man, not the action hero kinds of things he did later. He really excels here - and so does Matt Damon, in a terrific, complex turn, echoing his later role in "The Talented Mr. Ripley," as a self-described "mediocrity," riding the coattails of his much more talented father and brother. Amy Locane, radiant here, is another superb actress we have not seen enough of in roles like this one. Unlike so many contemporary movies, which never seem to end, and have no sense of pace or story, "School Ties" has no fat at all: it's beautiful directed and photographed, beautifully scored, wonderfully acted and written. And its message, though sometimes overstated, is still applicable today: prejudice, in whatever form it takes, destroys lives and damages and diminishes all of us. This theme, together with other themes in the picture of religious faith, loyalty to friends and family, the meaning of hard work, marks this as a very unusual picture for its time, right at the cusp of the greedy '90's, and there probably hasn't been as good a picture on this subject since. This is a minor classic, without a doubt. One of those films you return to time and again, like an old friend, for the reassurance of decency and trying to do good in an often cold and harsh world. The closing moments of this picture are among my favorites in any film I've ever seen. This deserves a re-release, with a 15th anniversary approaching, and some great extras and interviews. It's a very fine picture!

A lot of movies can be described as "dripping with atmosphere," but in the case of Silent Hill it's literally true. Faithfully adapted from the Konami video games by French director Christophe Gans and Pulp Fiction cowriter Roger Avary (both self-confessed video game addicts), this dark and grisly horror-fest is nothing if not a triumph of cinematography and production design, consisting of a minimal and mostly incoherent plot propped up by a mysterious maze of sets that literally seep, drip, and ooze with the atmospheric evil of past misdeeds. Welcome to the abandoned and perpetually foggy ghost town of Silent Hill, where grey ash falls like snow, a devastating coal-mine fire still burns in a hellish underground, and demons of various shapes and sizes make your worst nightmares seem like a walk in the park. It's here that distressed mother Rose (played by Pitch Black heroine Radha Mitchell) has taken her daughter Sharon (Jodelle Ferland) in hopes of discovering the source of Sharon's sleepwalking nightmares. What they find instead is a burned-out legacy of unspeakable evil, as Silent Hill's dark secrets are revealed. As opposing denizens of Silent Hill's meta-morphing underworld, Canadian actresses Alice Krige and Deborah Kara Unger seem to be the only ones who recognize this morbid mess as campy comedy; Gans (who established his visual flair with The Brotherhood of the Wolf) and Avary take it far too seriously, and the entire movie is utterly devoid of any emotional hooks or plot logic that would make us care about anything that happens. In crafting a loyal big-screen rendition of Silent Hill and its Playstation sequels, they've forgotten that movies play by a different and more demanding set of rules. As a result, they've made an impressive-looking but ultimately hollow horror film that only Silent Hill game-players can truly appreciate. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Silent but Deadly.......2007-09-06

I marginally liked this film when I first rented it, but somehow it resinated with me, and I recently bought it. I didn't even know it was based on a video game. I thought the cinematography was fantastic, and the score was mesmorizing and haunting. The whole film plays out like a mystical dream or a bad nightmare, that all depends upon your style. The special effects are fantastic, it puts you in that demon world. Radha Mitchell is one of those obscure actresses. She also plays in "High Art", which is another fantastic film. Hopefully there will be another "Silent Hill", the script leaves more to the imagination.

5 out of 5 stars Superb, well if you dont have ps3..........2007-09-02

It's really a great movie, i'm a big silent hill fan so it works for me. On the tech side it's also great, much better than the europian DVD version, but much worse than the BLU-RAY edition. I was really stunned by how bad the UK version was, it's like watching "VHS",... anyways if you cant afford PS3, for BLU-RAY, etc. Buy this, i'ts a Superb DVD movie with a Superb picture Quality, well for the DVD standard anyway...

5 out of 5 stars SILENT HILL WILL MAKE YOU SCREAM!!!.......2007-09-02

this is one of the few movies that has scared me. that says a lot because i don't scare easy. it was five big stars in my book. the acting was good, but the best part was silent hill and all it's demons and nightmares waiting in the wings. they were grotesque in a beautiful way. it was disturbing in some scenes, no doubt. but it was all done in a way that will make your skin literally crawl, and make your hair stand on end. this movie was wickedly evil. every time that siren went off you knew what was coming. the demons from the darkest corners of hell were coming. the game is good, but this was better, and it sure was about time. i honestly loved it, and it did creep me out no lie. guaranteed to make you squirm or look away, so watch it and you'll agree.

4 out of 5 stars A Disturbing Haunting........2007-08-31

Rose (Radha Mitchell) and Christopher Da Silva (Sean Bean) have an adopted daughter named Sharon (Jodelle Ferland) who begins suffering from severe night terrors and dangerous sleepwalking episodes. The doctors tell the couple that their daughter is going insane, but Rose will not accept that diagnosis. She decides to take Sharon to the one place that she keeps mentioning in her sleep, Silent Hill. Supposedly Silent Hill was abandoned years ago because of an ever-burning mine beneath the city, but Rose decides to take Sharon there anyway. After getting in an accident with a woman police officer (Laurie Holden), Rose awakens to find that Rose has disappeared and wondered into Silent Hill. The place is eerie and disturbing. Rose searches high and low to find Sharon, but when the sun goes down she discovers that there are monsters everywhere. In the times of light Rose and the police officer, Cybil, learn that the people still living in the city take refuge in the town church when the Darkness and monsters come. As Rose learns, though, things aren't exactly black and white and that in Silent Hill your best bet is taking a path down a road of grey.

SILENT HILL is slightly better than the average horror-suspense movie, with two elements in particular that allow it to stand out. The first is the music. SILENT HILL has some of the creepiest music I have ever heard in a film. Listening to just a few strains early in the movie was enough to give me the willies. The other element that stood out for me in the movie were the monsters. The structure of the movie is set up so you know exactly when the creatures are going to come out: sirens blare, crows fly, and the sky turns dark. Despite those warnings, the monsters of Silent Hill are still horrifying enough to frighten just about anyone. They move at a regular pace, but with almost unnatural movements that seem like some grotesque ritual. I later learned that the reason for this is that dancers were mostly hired for those roles.

Even though I found SILENT HILL to be a better than average horror-suspense movie, I didn't enjoy it all that much. It suppose it worked the way it was intended to, because I was left with some disturbing feelings and images after seeing it; the movie truly frightened me. However, there was just too much unnecessary gore and violence for my tastes, especially during the last twenty-minutes of the movie.

SILENT HILL is a movie that fans of the horror genre will probably appreciate most. I've also been told by people who have played the video games that the film is an excellent adaptation of the overall spirit of the games, so people who are fans of the games might enjoy the movie, too.

5 out of 5 stars Silent Hill reveals The Dark Side of the Feminine Aspect.......2007-08-30

I don't know why it's taken me so long to write a review about this film, but I viewed it again recently and have realised that it's one of the best modern horror films to date in a long while. In fact, something about it almost has that haunting aura of, say, "The Shining" and oftentimes there is a similarity to the films of Clive Barker that is unnerving yet effective. From the dreamlike beginning to the surreal ending, the entire film is outstanding in its ability to mesmerize the viewer into submission to fear; not the lurid fear of a gorefest, but the lucid illuminations that are sometimes gleaned from horrific dreams that cling long after we have been awake. The monsters in the film are utterly terrifying in their pathetic but terrible state, and the greatest monster, the cult leader Christabella (the ever eerie Alice Krige) is sickening to watch, her darkness a force of evil beyond imagining -- yet her vileness is something almost akin to a strange fascination -- the sort of fascination seen in the strange reptilian gaze of predatory animals. A major theme comes to mind here, something that many reviewers have missed I think. This film seems centred around women for some reason, and the entire film itself is very feminine in some ways, although terrible. It is the dark side of the feminine, the dark anima of the male soul caught in both dreamlike and nightmarish limbo. It is the hermetic and convuluted Chinese puzzle that encloses the women in and closes in on them all the same; it is the feminine gone completely wild and mad, no logic or restraint to hold anything together. This is what is alluring about this film, its total consent to wildness, madness, and unreality. This is the side of life that we ignore all too often in our day to day life and becomes monstrous when we ignore it, just like the victim of Silent Hill who gains revenge on those who have forgotten or would like to forget.

The miniseries The Jacksons: An American Dream begins in the 1940s, when Joseph Jackson (Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs) and Katherine (Angela Bassett) meet and fall in love, and ends in the 1980s, when their sons reunite for the 1983 Victory Tour that brought them back together as the Jacksons. During the first part, "The Early Years," the couple starts a family, and although times are tough, Joseph still finds time to play music on the side. When he discovers that his sons have inherited the same talent, the Jackson 5 are born. They sign with Motown and start churning out the gold records. The second part, "The Success Years," begins in 1970 at the peak of their fame, but by 1976, the hits have started to dry up. If the acting is uneven and the story somewhat sanitized, Bassett is affecting, and the series includes Emmy-winning choreography and a combination of original and re-created material, ranging from "I Want You Back" (1969) to Michael Jackson's "Beat It" (from 1982's multi-platinum Thriller). --Kathleen C. This movie is so long, but it is so entertaining!! The acting is great and so is the music. Even if you don't like Michael Jackson, this movie will still entertain you

4 out of 5 stars Hilton-Jacobs steals the movie.......2007-04-29

Very good mini series/movie. Lawrence Hilton Jacobs as Joe Jackson was very underrated , his role as Joe Jackson rivals Laraunce Fishburns as Ike Turner. I think it is funny that years later Angela Basset who plays the mother in this movie plays Tina Turner with Fishburn. I wonder how she compares the 2 performances. If this was a wide release movie and not a tv mini series Hilton-Jacobs would of been nominated for a Oscar.

Basset is just ok in this movie. She is completely overwhelmed by Hilton-Jacobs and the people who play Micheal. And she is really a annoying character. She sits around and cries when her husband is abusing the kids. I am sure if she had left this man years earlier the chldren would of not had been as mess up as they are. Being that Jermaine co writes this movie it is a interesting portrait he paints of his mother. Who is a sympathetic character but at the same time a weak mother. Katherine only leaves when she over hears Joe and his girlfriend on the phone, but she stayed when he was beating and abusing the kids. You hear her yelling at Joe every once in a while but she does. It was a interesting scene when she is on the phone with Joe again mad at something and you look around the dinner table and fans are sitting there eatng dinner with the mother and the other kids. Very weird.
Margret Avery who plays her mother looks more like her sister, then her mother particulary when Katherine is a adult with children.
Another intersting point about Jermaine writing this is the way he portrays his relationship to Hazel Gordy. We all knew at the time it had nothing to do with love and she was considered a very plain looking woman. It was a joke and a very opportunistic move on his part. But in this movie you would of thought this was Romeo and Juliet romance. I have to respect that Jermaine did not tear her down. Good for him.

The various performers playing the Jacksons through the years were very good but none had much to do except the the actors who played Michael who were very good. The one who played him as a adult was spot on, it was very tragic that he died soon after the movie was made. To me the one who played the second to last Michael really looked and moved like him when he was on the stage. Remember this movie is suppose to be about the original Jacksons, the ones in the hall of fame, the ones that blew the socks off of everyone when they first came on the scene, not Janet, who I thnk Michael sings for, I swear.

I like the way they touch on the various rivals of the Jackson Five like the Osmonds. There a few of them like the Sylvers. None of these rivals came close to Michael. The had a few hits but that was about it.

I remember Michael when he first came on the scene. We are the same age. There has never been anyone who was like him as a child and teenage performer. And no one since. Even now I am amazed when I see him in old footage and hear his voice. I cry looking at them because of how sad it is to see how he has fallen in the last 15 years. Prince and him are the same age look at Prince now and look at Michael. A sad story. This movie will show you when he was in his prime and it does a good job of it.

4 out of 5 stars Jacksons the American Dream.......2007-04-10

It is and was a classic movie. The product was in great condition and got to the addressee in a timely manner. I will definitely consider Amazon first when ordering online.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining and well acted family bio.......2007-02-09

Joe Jackson had dreams as a young man. He wanted to be a boxer and musician and go to California. But he got his girlfriend, Katherine, pregnant and he did the honorable thing--he married her. He tabled his dreams for his family, working in the steel mills of Gary, Indiana, to put foood on the table. A religious and principled man (the Jacksons were Jehovah Witnesses), he took family seriously and since he didn't believe in birth control or abortion, he had a lot of kids--9 altogether. On occasion he was brutal--but if any of you are parents, can you imagine how brutal you might get having 10 people depending on you?

Gossip and badmouthing from the kids paint Joe Jackson as a tyrant--and he may have some very large flaws--but one thing is very clear: he never abandoned his family. He transformed his dreams to fit the talent of his children and took all of them out of a probable bleak destiny in Gary to the height of world recognition. I'm amazed by that, frankly.

This movie is definitely worth watching for many reasons. Though poor, this was a close knit family smothered in love and support by both parents. Angela Bassett is touching as usual, all mothery and love, but able to stand up to Joe when he gets a little too to
