Like moths to a flame, great actors gravitate to the singular genius of playwright-screenwriter David Mamet, who updated his Pulitzer Prize-winning play for this all-star screen adaptation. The material is not inherently cinematic, so the movie's greatest asset is Mamet's peerless dialogue and the assembly of a once-in-a-lifetime cast led by Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, and Alec Baldwin (the last in a role Mamet created especially for the film). Often regarded as a critique of the Reagan administration's impact on the American economy, the play and film focus on a competitive group of real estate salesmen who've gone from feast to famine in a market gone cold. When an executive "motivator" (Alec Baldwin) demands a sales contest among the agents in the cramped office, the stakes are critically high: any agent who fails to meet his quota of sales "leads" (i.e., potential buyers) will lose his job. This intense ultimatum is a boon for the office superstar (Pacino), but a once-successful salesman (Lemmon) now finds himself clinging nervously to faded glory. Political and personal rivalries erupt under pressure when the other agents (Alan Arkin, Ed Harris) suspect the office manager (Kevin Spacey) of foul play. This cauldron of anxiety, tension, and sheer desperation provides fertile soil for Mamet's scathingly rich dialogue, which is like rocket fuel for some of the greatest actors of our time. Pacino won an Oscar nomination for his volatile performance, but it's Lemmon who's the standout, doing some of the best work of his distinguished career. Director James Foley shapes Mamet's play into a stylish, intensely focused film that will stand for decades as a testament to its brilliant writer and cast. --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars Didn't get it!.......2007-09-14

When I heard about this film in "Boiler Room" I thought "I need to see that movie!!". The cool references and the buzz it created was enough for me to go out and get the movie. Eventhough I tried REAL hard to like the movie I just didn't get it, I'm sorry! Sure the cast is great, which is something that worries me since part of being a great actor is knowing when to pass on a script. I don't know what was on these actors' minds when they gave it a try but it beats me!

I can't really say anything bad about the acting: I thought Harris, Pacino and Baldwin were pretty good, the latter being the one I liked best. But to me there simply was no substance to the film, nothing really 'happens'. I don't know why some people here say "oh, the dialogue was great!"... the dialogue sucks, people! It sounds like Abbott and Costello wrote the thing. It reminded me of the "Who's on first" routine they did.

It sounded like this:
"So, are you in?"
"In on what?"
"The leads"
"I don't know, what about you!"
"Me? What about me?"
"You know... in on it!"
"In on what?"
"The leads!"
"Oh yeah, the leads!"
"So... you in?"
"On what?"
"The leads!"
"Oh yeah, the leads!"
ad nausea...

I swear to god I just couldn't bear it any longer! It's like when you say a word over and over again until it loses its meaning! Leads, leads, leads, the leads!! And we never get to know anything about them! The plot (if any) is nowhere to we found and when the movie is over you get a feeling of being cheated of a good hour and a half. Avoid this movie at all costs unless you are a snobby movie connoisseur!

4 out of 5 stars Must see for every one in sales!.......2007-09-14

I think it shows a good view of how life in sales can be hard, specially if you don't have good back-up

4 out of 5 stars First Prize: A Cadillac, Second Prize: Steak Knives, Third Prize: WATCH THIS MOVIE.......2007-09-10

This star studded movie pulls you in and won't let you go. Glengarry Glen Ross is the story of Real Estate Salesmen down on their luck who are being threatened by their company and decide to fight back. Although I am not personally a salesmen the movie makes you sympathize with the characters. I find it interesting that this movie is very well known with really well known actors and yet it only really takes place in two settings, the office & the chinese food restaurant across the street. This is the kind of movie with memorable lines almost like a Quentin Tarrantino movie. The only complaint I have about this movie is the ending leaves you feeling like there is more to the story. I highly suggest giving this movie some of your time.

5 out of 5 stars As good as they come........2007-08-29

I can't fathom anyone giving this film less than 4 stars. It is as good as it gets. Great story, and superb performances from all the stars. Yes, it's dark and gritty, and has alot of profanity. If that's not your cup o' tea, skip it. It stinks to see bad reviews from people who just didn't get it, or were so offended by profanity. Grow up, you shouldn't be permitted to write a review for those reasons. I absolutely love this film, and give it my highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Ever!.......2007-08-19

Ask 20 people if they have even HEARD of this movie, and you're likely to get 20 blank expressions. This film is one of the best I've ever watched, absolutely riveting. The performances are first-rate all around, and as has been said already, this is one of Jack Lemmon's most brilliant efforts. You can't miss with this one.
