Spike Lee's longtime cinematographer, Ernest R. Dickerson, made his directorial debut with this violent story about four Harlem teens whose lives are changed when a store robbery goes wrong. The film has been likened to an urban The Wild Bunch, but it is far too artificial for that. With Dickerson's eye, Juice understandably looks great, but at the end of the day it is only a slightly better version of the heavily clichéd crime movies that have artificially dominated perceptions of black cinema in the U.S. in the '90s. Made in 1992, the clothes, hair and music all cry early 1990s. Ernest Dickerson's gritty street drama about four friends who grew up together in Harlem is emotional, convincing, yet not complete. Epps is great and the highlight of the film as `Q' the man in the crew which is skeptical about robbing a grocery store. Shakur gives a convincing over-the-top performance as `Bishop' the instigator and heart of the group, although Shakur has done better in films such as `Gridlock'd' and `Above the Rim'. Jermaine Hopkins and Khalil Kain were also good as the other two members of the crew. Samuel L. Jackson also gives a very cool performance as trip a local bar owner. Overall a good film, with some not so realistic plot turns, but still great message and characters.

Their other movies were good but this one is by far the best .
It,s none stop jokes and funny antics all the way , I just loved the bunny slippers & the simi auto pistol & I don`t want to leave out the van scene with the chick from hell roflmao . I own the vhs but want the dvd . So if you like strange / rauncy comedys this is the movie for you .

Before 'Scary Movie' the Wayans Brothers made this movie, 'Don't Be a Menace'. It is a spoof on movies like 'Boyz N the Hood' and 'Menace II Society', two great movies about the hoods in Los Angeles. I saw this movie when it first was released in theaters and now have watched this about 10 or 15 times. There's tons of crude humor, tons of profanity, tons of explicit sexual references and even some mock drug use. Everything you would expect to come out the pen of a Wayans brother. Don't get me wrong, they are talented guys and I enjoy watching their (Shawn and Marlon) show from time to time, but they're not exactly the African-American Woody Allens. However, I do have to give it up for their (sometimes witty) jabs at those "Growin' Up in Da Hood" dramas.

There are some genuinely funny moments that I will always like: Bernie Mac's cameo as the black cop who hates anything and anybody black, Suli McCullough as the wheelchair bound Crazy Legs doing his MC Hammer "U Can't Touch This" number, the "Hurry Up and Buy!" scene at the convenience store, Loc Dog (Marlon Wayans) applying for a job at the DMV. There are more very funny gags worth a barrel of laughs, but there are also moments where they simply push the crudeness envelope and deliver a lot more groans than laughs. There's one scene where Ashtray (Shawn Wayans) and Dashiki (Tracey Cherelle Jones) are having foreplay which wasn't all that appealing.

Marlon's character is obnoxious at times. He's another comic actor who sometimes tries too hard to be funny and simply hams it up. Helen Martin ("227") steals the show as the pot-smoking grandmother. You can, maybe, consider this a hit-or-miss comedy. But there are a good enough amount of hits to overshadow the misses. It's still worth watching and has its memorable moments.

Man dis has got to be da funniest movie I have seen by da Wayan Bros. It kinda goes a lil to far somtimes but dats da funny part. Da movie is basically about a guy named Ashtre who goes back to da hood to live wit his dad who is only about 1 year or 2 years older and from there da crudeness begins. Da movie is extremely hilarious it mostly makes fun of movies such as "Menace II Society", "South Central" etc. u know gang banger movies. U will have a lot of laughs wen u watch so watch it right away!!!

Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in The Hood wants desperately to be an Airplane-like parody of inner-city African American gangsta movies. Instead, it offers us more turkey than we would find at any Thanksgiving spread. Unfunny, stereotypical, stupid, and crass, it was cowritten by Marlon and Shawn Wayans, both of whom should have known better. The two fare better as actors than writers, as they are almost amusing as hardened, dimwitted homeboys. As Ashtray, Shawn returns to his 'hood and hooks up with his best buddy (Marlon) before the two embark on a series of oh-so-wacky adventures. Siblings Keenen Ivory, Kim, and Craig Wayans also make appearances. If you really want a laugh, watch Booty Call. --Rochelle O'Gorman

I don't really understand the negative reviews that i'm seeing of this movie, Don't Be A Menace... is what it is, and that is a parody of all the early 90's hood films (of which I am a big fan of). It's like the people knocking it haven't actually seen the films they're taking the p*ss out of, if you've seen Boyz N The Hood and Menace II Society and you have a sense of humour you'll probably find this funny. Some have criticised the lack of a plot but they are completely missing the point, it's a parody of several films, therefore it cuts from scenes of different films, i mean the plot is always going to be secondary to the jokes. I would say though in order to really enjoy this film you MUST have seen at least Boyz N The Hood & Menace II Society as most of the jokes come from these films.

If you are a fan of the Wayans brothers other films you should know what to expect and enjoy this, Shawn & Marlon are excellent as Ashtray & Loc Dog and I found myself laughing out loud on several occasions. I would go through scenes that I found funny but I don't want to spoil it for anyone whose not watched the film, but I highly recommend it to all fans of the wayans brothers and all those 90's hood movies.

This movie is definately one of the funniest movies ive ever seen. The jokes are lame, yes but that doesnt make the movie stupid. The jokes are so stupid, that it makes the movie hilarious. Like the part when the grandma is smoking weed, that part was funny. This movie isnt necessarily funny, its stupid funny. But its hilarious. Every part, from beggining to end. I recommend this movie to any who loves comedy, and likes these actors. Its definately worth the watch. Its real funny.

The Wayans Brothers * in one phunny movie that I remembered watching when I was at least 5 years old, now I'm 15 and still enjoying it! Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in The Hood imitates and makes fun of Hood movies such as Boys In Tha Hood, Menace II Society, Poetic Justice, Juice & Above The Rim. Don't Be A Menace shows the humors of life in South Central, Watts, Compton & Inglewood, CA. I just enjoy this movie, and I wish there was another Hood Comedys that would be imitating Get Rich Or Die Trying, but the media would h8 that! To bad Marlon & Shawn Wayans thinks that this movie is bigoted & offensive to society, when they're the ones getting played, not payed! There is a lot of 40 Ounce drinkin', Chronic smokin', Gat tattin', Drive By Shootings, Ol' Grandma smokin' on a Fatty? White Geek holding up a 2-1-1 in a Asian Liuor Store? and did I forget the Back yard Parties!? Good Movie, 5/5 stars all the way!

Wax up your boards and hang 10 (or whatever) where the big waves come crashing in: off the English coast at Cornwall. Huh? No endless summer? No two girls for every boy? No, but in Blue Juice one can see what most of us probably never even thought about: the British Isles are indeed islands and, not incongruously, there's a considerable surfing culture with a handful of homegrown legends. One of the latter is JC (Sean Pertwee), a skilled surfer so driven by the challenge and so dedicated to his mates that it threatens his meandering romance with the long-suffering Chloe (Catherine Zeta-Jones). The two have planned an extensive, around-the-world trip as a kind of prelude to discussing marriage, but the arrangement is threatened when three of JC's old childhood chums arrive from London. One of them (played by Steven Mackintosh) is a famous record producer who has sold his soul (in every sense) to reap profits from fashionable electronica. Another (Ewan McGregor) is a chronic screwup resorting to hustling junk to unsuspecting customers. The last (Peter Gunn) is an anxious sort terrified of marrying his longtime girlfriend. Together, these four guys look like a pack of nowhere men and they know it: while the story largely focuses on JC and Chloe, there's plenty of material for the supporting characters to indulge in mucho self-loathing. The film never quite jumps off the screen and the script may be hampered by too many layers of character eccentricity, but this is still an enjoyable piece with some fine comic performances. --Tom Keogh

Blue Juice is an absolute classic which sums up the Cornish surfing community very well. The film and countryside is true to Kernow and as a Cornish surfer myself, know alot of people in situations very similar. Although actual footage is limited, its a film about their lives rather than a surfing vid. It is balanced well and is funny, true to life and shows what some of our lives down here are really like.

This is a great cute movie if you don't want to have to think too hard. Some classic funny lines, really goofy characters.

JC (Sean Pertwee) must prove his worth as a surfer (in England!) where surfing barely exists. Kind of a cute twist on the surfer movies: it's cold and there's really no waves to speak of. But once in a blue moon, these huge waves come in and that is when JC must prove himself.

BUT... his girlfriend (Cahterine Zeta-Jones) will disown him if he even tries! So, here lies the issue. Does he pronounce his love and forget the stupid wave, or is he influenced by his childhood friends who care nothing for intimate relationships?

Unrealistic, sure. Of course. But cute.

Plot is thin, but the characters are memorable and there are some truly classic funny lines. JC's childhood friends (Ewan McGregor, Peter Gunn and Steven Mackintosh) are hilarious characters and are all portrayed very well. Definitely worth the rental price, or buy it used.

A couple things I don't understand:

WHY ON EARTH IS THE PRICE SO HIGH!?!?! What's up with that? But it used.

WHY is Ewan McGregor on the front cover, as if he is the main character? Yes, he plays a pivotal character - JC actually forsakes his love to save Dean's pride and his life. But shouldn't Sean Pertwee be the one on the cover with Catherine Zeta-Jones? As cute as McGregor is, he never looks this clean-cut (or sane) in the movie!

I always made fun of the surfer dudes before seeing Ewan in this movie. I loved the acid trip scene where Ewan gets embarrassed over his friend's behavior although he gave him the acid. Check out the braided hair on Ewan as well and they had a cool song and sock/p*nis scene as well.

In one part of the moive I think you sould look away on that one. Trush me. The legend is here it's JC (Sean Pertwee). In the moive he has the look's and fame and he has it all: And he has the hottest girl in town her name is Chloe (Catherine Zeta Jones). Ok one of his friend's (Ewan McGregor) enter him in a dangerous surfing contest, poor JC he must risk his life or his one ture love.

Which one is it going to be? The girl or the contest???

In the moive he said he is out of shape and he can't surf like that anymore. In the moive he said he almost die form that foolishly stuff. Once he had it all but now I don't know about that one.

I WAS VERY UNFAMILIAR WITH JUISE NEWTON BEFORE VIEWING THIS DVD, HOWEVER THIS LADY REALLY CAN SING.
SHE SHINES ON ALL OF THESE SONGS AND IS BACKED BY A VERY IMPRESSIVE BAND. THE SOUND QUALITY OF THE DVD IS VERY GOOD IN 5.1 SURROUND.
NOTE:THERE ARE A FEW EXTRA FEATURES ALSO THAT ADD A BIT EXTRA TO THIS DVD!!

Bettern' Bein' There.......2002-04-30

This DVD has to be better than being there. You would never get as close as the camera does. What a well polished show. Excellent band. Ms. Juice is much better than I remembered. The sound is also very good on this disk. Maybe they are finally working the technical bugs out. I'll watch this one again!!

Bittersweet night before 9/11........2002-04-20

I had the pleasure of being at this fantastic show in LA on 9/10. What an amazing showcase for the talents of Juice Newton. Watching the DVD was almost as good as being there (and I know). As a longtime Juice fan I had never seen her live and was impressed by how beautiful she sounds live. As her partner Otha Young says in the behind the scenes feature, Juice sounds even better live. Her song selection is perfect, great new songs, and beautiful renditions of older hits. I especially was touched by her rendition of "Old Flame". What the dvd doesn't show is how Juice spent so much time and energy on her fans after the show signing autographs and talking. What makes watching this concert bittersweet is how the next morning after such a great night of song our world changed forever with the attacks of 9/11.
My only quibble with the dvd (and cd) are the lame graphics. The cover is bland and could have been much more exciting looking. The picture on the cover isn't even from the show. Oh well, it's the show that counts the most and THAT is excellent. Buy this DVD and enjoy the show!

Juice Newton's touring concert brought to you LIVE on DVD.......2002-04-07

If you are a Juice Newton fan, or would like to become one, you should attend one of the 100 or more concerts a year performed at venues all over North America. But if you cannot get to one, or would like to enjoy one in your living room, Juice and her group, the Regenerators have packaged up the "perfect concert" onto DVD. It is named "Juice Newton - Every Road Leads Back to You" after one of the brand new songs in the concert. The advantage of watching this concert on DVD is that you continually view the concert from the vantage points of a combination of five live cameras, so it is as if you are watching with five sets of eyes. The concert took place at the Key Club on Sunset Strip in California, on September 10, 2001 (one day before 9/11/2001). This DVD captures the essense of a Juice Newton concert, with the enthusiatic audience of many Juice fans. It brings you so close to the show that while watching at home, I felt like clapping and cheering after every number. This DVD is more than a concert production, it has an introduction showing the concert setup, and afterwards it has comprehensive interviews with Juice and her partner, Otha Young and her husband Tom Goodspeed, You can really get a feel for the personalities of these outstanding people. Also provided are audio tracks for four newly introduced songs.
By watching this DVD, you can get a good idea of what a treat you will be in for when you see Juice and her group live.

A terrific concert DVD...with lots of extras!.......2002-04-04

This DVD features a terrific 77-minute live show in which Juice Newton mixes several of her '80s hits with many new songs, making for a thoroughly up-to-date and enjoyable experience. Newton's records have never captured her vocal range, but this DVD showcases her considerable vocal talents quite well! Many of her most popular hits are included, such as "The Sweetest Thing," "Queen Of Hearts," "Hurt," and "Love's Been a Little Bit Hard On Me"...and Newton throws in an equal measure of newer material, making this DVD more about who she is as an artist than about who she was. The song choices range from folk to country to pop to big band to a terrific vocal quartet finale, all of which Newton handles with admirable panache...talk about a musically diverse performer!! The DVD also features a great interview with Newton and several important people in her life...it is great to finally get a glipmse of this private celebrity's personality. And this is one lady who knows her priorities, knows her business, and has her feet firmly planted on the ground. Another excellent feature is four new audio tracks, all of which are TERRIFIC. From the tender, moving ballad "Love Is Still Alive And Well" to the astonishingly delicate and powerful "If I Could, I Would," Newton showcases that while her days of being at the top of the charts may be behind her, she is producing her best music ever. Our 3 year old has had a great time exploring with these videos. Every time the apple section come on, he asks to pause the DVD so he may eat an apple while he watches. As a parent, I too learned a lot about food as I watched. Very entertaining and very recommendable!!

Description
