Optimism shines in this classic 1960 Disney film starring Hayley Mills. When the newly orphaned Pollyanna comes to live with her wealthy aunt in Harrington Town, life looks promising. Despite her aunt's insistence on propriety and modesty, Pollyanna's cheerful, optimistic ways spread throughout the town--converting even a cantankerous recluse and a whining hypochondriac. Only Aunt Polly has trouble welcoming her young niece into her heart. In a clash between the townspeople and Aunt Polly over local politics, it's Pollyanna's influence that helps individual townspeople find the inner strength to stand up for their own beliefs. When Pollyanna is involved in a serious accident, Aunt Polly finally realizes how much she loves her niece. Can Aunt Polly and the entire town somehow restore Polly's optimism and ensure a full recovery? Pollyanna is wholesome entertainment that will leave the entire family eager to play the "glad game." --Tami Horiuchi
Description
Hayley Mills received a special Academy Award(R) for her performance as Pollyanna in this timeless Walt Disney tapestry of small-town Americana. Here you'll meet Pollyanna, the orphan who brings sunshine into the lives of everyone she meets. But her Aunt Polly (Jane Wyman) is too concerned with appearances, propriety, and local politics to appreciate her effervescent niece. It isn't until the town almost loses their "Glad Girl" that Aunt Polly realizes the power of love and lightheartedness. Featuring an impressive all-star cast and a story filled with fun, laughter, and tears, POLLYANNA will inspire your entire family and prove that the art of positive thinking is just as delightful today as it was at the turn of the century!

"IF YOU LOOK FOR THE BAD IN MANKIND YOU WILL SURELY FIND IT!".......2007-08-04
I had never seen this movie until recently. When I saw the running time was almost 2 1/4 hours I was a little leery, but I gave it a shot. This film is one of the least corny Disney films I have ever seen. The story of a young girl who is orphaned and comes to live with her rich aunt. The effect this upbeat child has on her aunt and the townspeople is very positive brings the townspeople together. This is a very good film and I would recommend it for family viewing. The 2 disc vault collection has a great transfer and a ton of extras! I would like to point out that some of these Disney releases have included the original cartoon short that aired with the picture in theaters. This is a trend I hope other studios follow! Bravo!
Part of a must-have collection.......2007-07-05
There are certain movies a 10 year old girl (like my daughter, Caley) must have: Swiss Family Robinson, Pippi Longstocking, Matilda, The Secret Garden, Labyrinth, and Pollyanna. I was hoping she would like them as much as I did when I was a kid. She does!
Pollyanna.......2007-06-28
Colorful, delightful Disney fare boasts a first-rate cast, including veterans Wyman (who's excellent), Karl Malden, Agnes Moorehead, Donald Crisp, and Adolphe Menjou, but young Mills (in her first stateside Disney appearance) steals it from all of them, carrying the movie with her natural, guileless performance. Gorgeously shot, with wonderful turn of the century detail, this is a winner from start to finish.
Pollyanna.......2007-03-12
This movie is my all-time favorite childhood. I had the sound track and played it so much that I still have it memorized (I drove my parents NUTS!), . It's a wonderful movie and I still pull it out to watch it often! If you've never seen it, get it for your kids.

Produced in 1982, Savannah Smiles tells the story of Savannah, a girl of privilege who runs away from home. She ends up in the company of Boots and Alvie, two ex-convicts on the run. This bumbling duo soon realizes who Savannah is and that a large reward has been offered for her return. They try to give her back, but instead of the parents being grateful, they accuse the two of kidnapping. Boots and Alvie have no choice but to go underground with Savannah, and the three soon become a family whose days are filled with kite flying, home-cooked meals, bedtime stories, and a puppy. But Boots and Alvie know in their hearts they must do the right thing and return Savannah to her parents. For its time, this is a sweet movie filled with innocence and fun. However, in a time when children are told never to go off with strangers, it is hard to justify a movie that glorifies that very thing, no matter how goodhearted the two felons are. (Ages 6 and older) --Peggy Maltby-Etra
Description
The All-Time Family Classic Now On DVD! Alvie and Boots (Mark Miller and Donovan Scott) are a pair of bumbling felons searching for the ultimate score after a daring prison escape. Savannah Driscoll (the unforgettable Bridgette Andersen in her movie debut) is an imaginative six-year-old whose wealthy politician parents have little time for her. But when Savannah runs away from home and hides in Boots and Alvie's broken-down getaway car, the small- time crooks are suddenly mistaken for big-time kidnappers. Can a hard luck fugitive and a failed chicken thief now find a foolproof way to collect the $100,000 ransom? Why is the nation's toughest investigator (Peter Graves of AIRPLANE!) hunting them down like hardcore criminals? And most of all, will the charms of one special little girl teach everyone about love, trust, friendship and family? Michael Parks, Chris Robinson and Oscar® nominee Pat Morita (THE KARATE KID) co-star in this beloved childhood favorite that captivated a nation to become one of the most heartwarming hits of the decade!

Blast from the Past - Old Movies.......2007-08-13
I have 4 granddaughters and they all love movies as much as cartoons -
Annie, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Mary Poppins, Wizard of Oz, etc. Soooo, I have been buying some of the older movies that I watched - Pollyanna, Old Yeller.
Then, I remembered when my kids were little and we got cable one of the first movies we watched was Savannah Smiles. I ordered it and the little girls all loved it, and their parents (my kids) loved that they loved it.
I had remembered that it was a precious movie, but I forgot how precious.
Note: There are a few bad words - ex. bastard for one. I wasn't crazy about that, but just made a point to say, "Oh, my goodness, that wasn't a very nice word!!", if I thought it was necessary to address.
I smile at the thought..........2007-07-24
I looked for this movie on DVD for ages. It was even hard to find on VHS. We had nearly worn out our 1980s video recording from cable.
When I had first read about the movie, I thought it would be a "The Ransom of Red Chief" sort of tale, but this was not the case.
"Savannah Smiles" is an odd little story, and I hope it has never inspired a child to run away in order to punish a neglectful parent. Not every person who would find such a child would turn out to be as kind-hearted as Boots (Donovan) and Alvie (Miller). These two convicts (ex-con, in Boots' case) have led hard lives with a great deal of neglect and abuse, themselves. Yet getting to know Savannah (Andersen) and protecting her from the bad things of the world allows them both to learn they can be and are more than they ever thought possible. They tell Savannah that when she ran away, she did something very reckless and dangerous, and that not everyone out in the world would be nice to her. Her safety becomes very important to them.
We can't say as much for Savannah's father, a PR-hungry politician with no heart. (Ironically, he is portrayed by Chris Robinson, whom viewers might remember as Laura's beloved step-dad on General Hospital.)
I loved watching this movie with my kids. They are all grown now, but this movie still holds a special place in all our hearts.
Mark Miller seemed familiar to me. Besides being the actor who portrayed tough-guy Alvie, he was the man who wrote the story and the screenplay. He had also played the part of the dad on a 1960s TV show called "Please Don't Eat the Daisies," which I adored as a kid. One of his real-life daughters is named Savannah.
Sadly, the story of Bridgette Andersen does not have a happy ending. She died from a drug overdose before her twenty-second birthday. What a waste of human life and talent! This bit of her that she leaves behind reveals a sparkle of love and hope. It makes one wonder what might have been.
Savannah Smiles.......2007-07-06
Bridgette Andersne would be one of the most talented actresses of this age her acting was superb. I had tears and laughter what a delightful story of this little girl who was neglected by her parents and trusted two hardened criminals. I throughly enjoyed it.
One of my favorites.......2007-05-18
I was so excited to find this movie, I told my daughter and she asked me to order one for her also, we would watch this movie when our kyds were little, we recorded it off TV and we watched it so much we finally wore out the tape so this find was a treasure. We watched it as soon as it arrived and it brought back good memories
An enduring favorite!.......2007-05-09
Our family watched this wonderful movie many times together when our children were small. Now, we are sending it to them to watch with their children. And they're loving it!!!

One thing Shirley Temple did extremely well (besides sing, dance, and act) was turn the cranky cuddly. She'd done it effectively, two years prior, in 1935's The Little Colonel with grandfather Lionel Barrymore. Now in Heidi she turns her reclusive grumpy grandfather, Adolf (Jean Hersholt), into the loving sort she knows he really is. Heidi is an orphan, dumped into the Swiss Alps by self-centered Aunt Dete (Mady Christians) onto a grandfather she's never known, but they soon learn to love each other. Heidi's mercenary aunt returns and sells (!) Heidi to a cruel woman, appropriately named Fraulein Rottenmeier (Mary Nash). Adolf sets out on a quest to find his granddaughter. Meanwhile, Heidi charms Klara Sesemann (Marcia Mae Jones), the wealthy handicapped girl in Fraulein Rottenmeier's care. Look for a delightful Arthur Treacher as the Sesemann butler. There's a cute fantasy production number, "In Our Little Wooden Shoes," featuring Temple in various period costumes. Throughout Heidi, Temple is, as always, wonderfully joyful. This is perhaps the best-known rendering of the popular children's story by Johanna Spyri (it's been filmed some 10 times). --N.F. Mendoza
Description
Shirley Temple in a role that seems custom-made for her, portrays the spirited young heroine of the popular children's novel, giving her a rich emotional depth and infinite charm. When her aunt tires of caring for her, orphan Heidi is taken into the Swiss mountains to live with her gruff grandfather (Jean Hersholt), a hermit who comes to adore her. But the aunt returns to steal Heidi away, selling her to a family whose invalid daughter (Marcia Mae Jones) needs a companion. Bullied by an evil governess (Mary Nash), Heidi still charms the entire household and never stops trying to return to her beloved grandfather.
Customer Reviews:
Sidney, Arthur, Jean and of course.....miss Temple!.......2007-08-13
I stayed with this movie mainly because I wanted to see Sidney Blackmer who I knew from the film Rosemary's Baby. Also I was interested in Arthur Treacher who I vaguely recall as the late Merv Griffin's Ed McMann-type sidekick on his tv talk show. And I knew the name Jean Hersholt(isn't a theater named after him in New York?) so I wanted to watch him.
As the film begins though I was very much drawn into the story itself featuring of course the delightful miss Temple. It seems Shirley (Heidi) is being foisted off upon her grandfather by her could-care-less aunt and while the grandfather (Hersholt) feels initially violated with this unexpected arrival, Heidi's sunshiney disposition wins him over after not too long. During these opening scenes, as Heidi and her grandfather get to know each other, we also get to see the blossoming of Hersholt's grandfather from a very quiet and downright annoyed old man into a thoughtful and loving caretaker of his new charge. Pretty soon, grandfather is humming along to the little song Heidi sings and taking her into the village to attend church, something he hasn't done in a very long time.
Ay, but then the other shoe drops. Wicked old auntie returns one day and while grandfather is out chopping wood forces Heidi to come with her to Frankfurt to stay with an equally mean lady in charge of an invalid girl about Heidi's age. I finally got to see Sidney as a much younger man(Heidi being filmed in 1937, Rosemary's Baby, 1968)as he plays the father of the invalid girl Heidi befriends. It's fun to spot the similarities in the face of someone who is 31 years younger. And Arthur Treacher playing a wonderfully fun-loving butler is a real treat. Suffice to say Heidi's grandfather rescues her from the clutches of the terribly mean nurse and Heidi helps her new friend to walk again. But the bottom line with this movie even though it goes without saying is the sparkling presence of miss Shirley Temple. Truely a one of a kind personality in all of moviedom. There is one scene in particular that I would love to see in color(this version I saw was in black & white)and that is where Heidi is being read a bedtime story by her grandfather and dreams she is the little dutch girl from the story. The dream is a nice musical/dance number with Heidi and friends in wooden shoes.

great kids movie!.......2007-06-15
After being totally dissapointed by the Emma Bolger version of Heidi, I purchased this one. It was beautiful. Sweet, innocent, funny, even a little sad. All the characters did an excellant job. Children don't need high paced drama to be impressed. They giggled and wiggled over parts such as Heidi milking the goat, the monkeying around, and the sleigh chase near the end. And don't forget Andrew trying to milk "Bearly" either! I am a mother with six children. We all loved this movie. I would recomend it to anyone who wants a bit of innocent entertainment.
Awesome!.......2007-04-06
WE ALL LOVE SHIRLEY TEMPLE! Espicially Heidi. I treasure this movie so much. Now for the actors, Shirley Temple was great for Heidi. Totally great. What a cute girl. Jean Hersholt was wonderful when he turned out to be a christiane. He is a great actor. Arthur Treacher is hilarious for Andrews. He is absoulutely wonderful. Helen Westley was very pretty for Blind Anna. I also like her soft voice. Pastor Schultz and Fraulein Elsa played by Thomas Beck and Paulieen Moore were a perfect match. Mary Nash acted Fraulein Rottenmier. She's scary. I thought she was going to kill Heidi that night she took her out in the streets alone. Then I thought she was going to go back and kill Klara too! Sidney Blackman was funny for Herr Sessamann. I liked him. He was great to Heidi and Klara, his daughter. Now for Mady Christaine who played Aunt Dete. She was mean. She seemed to have won the battle with Fraulein Rottenmier. Marcia Mae Jones was so cute for Klara. Porr sweet Klara is in danger! Fraulein Rottenmier didn't want her to get well. Delmar Watson was a great Peter. He was a wonderful goat general. I love this movie alot!
A CLASSIC I WATCH EVERY CHRISTMAS SEASON.......2007-03-26
This is the definitive version of this movie, I have read some reviews below and would like to clear some things up. First off, this is the full feature and nothing was cut, second the print transfer is very good. Maybe there is a better print ,but I have not seen it. There are only a hand full of her films that I will always remember and this is one of them. Curly Top,Bright Eyes and The Little Colonel were the others. The DVD has both Black and White and Colorized version. I am not a fan of colorizing anything, but since they kept the original intact, I did enjoy watching both. This is a family classic that should be added to your Christmas movie collection.

My kids asked me to check it out from the library and after we watched it together as a whole family, I bought a copy from Amazon to add to our collection of family films. It's rare that a remake would outshine the original, but this one is in a class by itself and leaves the 1960 version in the dust. The casting and writing were superb; this film remains true to the book, which I appreciate. (I cannot tell you how annoying it is when filmmakers second-guess the classics and compromise the story in order to make it more "appealing.")
Amanda Burton did right by author Eleanor H. Porter in her interpretation of Aunt Polly. It would be so easy for an actress to make this a mere two-dimensional character, but Burton thoroughly masters this role. Georgina Terry is a wonderful Pollyanna. She is a relatively new to the film industry and she does have a few bad acting habits onscreen here and there that I noticed, but she was such a lovable Pollyanna that the shortcomings really don't matter.
As a mom I can wholly recommend this film to add to your family's home library. If you want your children to enjoy a film that embraces Christianity, upholds the sanctity of marriage, and tickles your eyes with sweet glimpses of English country living, then this DVD would probably be the best 18 bucks you've spent in a long time.
Actually Better than the Original.......2007-01-09
I caught this movie on TV. I was interested in watching the remake after enjoying the Walt Disney version.
I must say that I found this version a lot more enjoyable to watch. I enjoyed this movie so much that I went on Amazon to buy a copy as it is not available in Australia.
If you are looking for a movie that the whole family can watch look no further.
I am always pleased when I come across a well made production which is also clean and enjoyable.
First Rate!.......2006-09-13
A giving, young girl brings warmth and cheer to older people, who had lost all joy. And so she visits you.
I had seen the Disney version first, and liked it at 4-stars. This is a completely different movie, though the same story. The Disney is more entertainment. This film is a warm, uplifting, friend coming to visit you. More depth. Moving. Beautiful English country homes, within a beautiful countryside. Some subtle humor. A pleasant film of encouragement.
Well-made period films are: "Pride & Prejudice 1940, 1996, 2006", "Wives & Daughters", "North & South", Disneys' "Summer Magic", and "Naughty Marietta 1935 with Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy". Fairly made is "Under the Greenwood Tree". Excellent period series is "Road to Avonlea seasons 1-6", and "Christy the Complete Series".
Superb.......2006-08-25
I watched this version of Pollyanna years after I had seen the Disney version, and was pleasantly surprised at how close it came to the book. Georgina Terry is exceptional, and leaves one wishing there were more to see. She absolutely owns the role, and you can't help but love her and all her gladness.
Is it just me, or does anybody else think she would make a wonderful Anne of Green Gables?

Product Description
Savannah is the only child of a wealthy politician, Richard Driscoll (Chris Robinson) who is more concerned with his image and career than with his family. When only the maid shares Savannahs birthday cake, she decides to run away. She hides in her aunts car that is stolen that next day by two bungling criminals (Mark Miller and Donovan Scott) who are on the loose. Surprised at having Savannah in the car, the criminals try to decide what to do with her. Savannah refuses to tell them her name or where she lives. So, they have no choice but to take her back to their hideout. Savannah's disappearance is in the newspapers and a $100,000 reward is offered for her safe return. The criminals decide to keep her a little longer so they can figure out how to collect the money and not be caught or charged with kidnapping. A unique friend ship emerges as the three get to know each other as a hard-nosed detective (Peter Graves) tries to find her. In a final showdown, Savannah expresses her love for the two criminals who showed her love and friendship as her father looks on, embarrassed by being upstaged by these two criminals.

Adorable.......2007-07-15
Cute, Cute, Cute watched this movie when i was alittle girl and still to this day i still get teary at the end. Glad i found this movie!!!!!
A Loved movie of all time, just a bad copy to DVD.......2007-01-25
Loved Bridgette in this movie. Poor quality DVD, but just worth watching again. I haven't seen this movie in a long time and it still makes you laugh and cry.
Bridgette "Savannah" was shown more love and respect with the bad guys then with or by her own parents. To bad that Savannah never got to see her new friends ever again.
You can tell she loved them when she was taken away in a car with her mom. Loved her telling them a bed time story, since neither of them new any. She was better off with the 2 guys than at home. I don't normally say that, but in this case I do.
Money can't buy you love and respect. You have to earn it. Savannah had everything that money could buy her, but all she wanted was the love, respect and time of her parents.
Time spent with a child is worth more than any material thing you can or may buy them.
The police always jump to conclusions.....and the father was horrible to Savannah. Her nanny found her run away letter, but her own father burned it in the fireplace.
Her father called police even when he promised not to.
Great movie, but very poor quality! Bridgette, "Savannah" made the movie for me. You can't help falling for this little adorable little girl. So Cute.
Very good movie, glad to finally find it, but disappointed on the quality. It is still a keeper in my book.
Movie rating 10 stars! Quality rating 2 stars!
Savannah will make you laugh and cry over and over again...
Beloved movie from childhood.......2007-01-16
I loved this movie as a child and loved when I watched it again as an adult. I wouldn't recommend it for small children to watch though, but older children and adults should watch this movie at some point in their lives. You gotta love Savannah. It makes you think about how much your kids know and how much they pick up on from parents and how naive they can be at the same time. Great movie. Maybe I'll watch it again tonight!
Just as remembered.......2007-01-09

Shirley Temple is at her plucky peak in this film. She bests legend Lionel Barrymore: literally (her credit is above his) and figuratively (as her character softens his). The Little Colonel is set in the post-Civil War South. Little Lloyd Sherman hopes to reunite her mother, Elizabeth Lloyd (Evelyn Venable), with her stern Confederate Civil War veteran grandfather, Colonel Lloyd (Barrymore). Six years earlier, Lloyd's mother had run away to marry Yankee Jack Sherman (John Lodge). Now the young family hopes to return to Elizabeth's plantation home.
Like The Littlest Rebel, made the same year (1935), the film has questionable politics, featuring a supplicant Mom Becky (the formidable future Oscar-winner Hattie McDaniel) and a poor-spelling butler, Walker (Bill "BoJangles" Robinson). But Temple, as sweetly energetic little Lloyd, is affectionate with both, as well as with her African American playmates, May Lily (Avonnie Jackson) and Henry Clay (Nyanza Potts). (Temple apparently shared the sentiment in real life, and once said Robinson was her favorite costar.) The Little Colonel features the amazing dance number with Temple and Robinson merrily tapping up and down a staircase. --N.F. Mendoza
Description
As the rambunctious "Little Colonel," Shirley Temple demonstrates her acting range as well as her lovable charm and song-and-dance showmanship in this affecting post-Civil War story. After a blistery Southern colonel (Lionel Barrymore) banishes his daughter (Evelyn Venable) for marrying a Northerner (John Lodge), he refuses to see her even when she returns years later with her young daughter. As outspoken as her grandfather, the ingenious child turns on plenty of charm and fireworks to set things right.

"The Little Colonel (1935) ... Shirley Temple ... 20th Century Fox".......2007-08-13
20th Century Fox presents "THE LITTLE COLONEL" (released: 22 February 1935) (80 mins) (B&W/Color Versions) - Under David Butler (Director), Buddy G. DeSylva (Producer), William Conselman (Screenwriter), Annie Fellows Johnston (Book Author), Arthur C. Miller (Cinematographer), William Skall (Cinematographer), Art Lange (Musical Direction/Supervision), Thomas Moore (Composer (Music Score), Irene Morra (Editor) - - - - - - our story line opens with crusty old Colonel Lloyd (Lionel Barrymore) is used to having his ornery way so when he finds out his daughter Elizabeth (Evelyn Venable) who is determined to run off with Yankee Jack Shermon (John Lodge) to be married, he confronts her in a heated exchange and vows never to see her again if she does, and then she leaves --- years later Elizabeth, with her husband and their young daughter Miss Lloyd (Shirley Temple), decides to return to a small house that belonged to her mother and which happens to be next door to her stubborn father's home --- they soon have an accidental meeting, with a few clashes of granddaughter and the elderly Colonel just to see who is the most stubborn! --- Troubles descend on the Sherman family through some persuasive dishonest men who are out to rob them of their legal rights, and things start to get serious but grandpa comes to the rescue --- some highlights with Becky (Hattie McDaniel) and Walker (Bill 'Bojangles' Robinson) certainly add some amusing dialog and Robinson's tap dancing is superb --- Not surprisingly, little Shirley is right in there keeping pace with him as they both tap dance up the stairs --- There will never be a child star to match Shirley Temple: A born actress, dancer, and entertainer --- but if you need a feel good moment checkout a Shirley Temple film.

Shirley as a pint-sized Southern belle.......2007-05-12
THE LITTLE COLONEL was the first of two movies, released in 1935, that featured Shirley Temple in a Civil War storyline.
Based on a story by Annie Fellows Johnston, Shirley Temple plays the strong-willed Miss Lloyd Sherman, trying to reconcile her mother (Evelyn Venable) with her embittered grandfather (Lionel Barrymore). Temple is especially appealing in this film, where she gets to wear some beautiful hoopskirt costumes.
It's also in this film where Temple performs the legendary "Staircase Dance" with Bill 'Bojangles' Robinson, who would go on to appear in several more films with Temple based solely on his success here. This is one of the rare films where Shirley Temple doesn't sing; the only musical moment is provided with "Love's Young Dream", sung by a dubbed Evelyn Venable.
One of the all-time Temple greats, THE LITTLE COLONEL also features good work from Hattie McDaniel, John Lodge and Sidney Blackmer. The DVD inclues both B&W and computer-coloured versions of the film.
TOP NOTCH SHIRLEY TEMPLE AT HER BEST!.......2007-03-26
This is a classic Temple film! The Tap Dance on the stairs sequence is now legendary and it is amazing to see this talented kid keep up with Bill" Bo Jangles" Robinson. One of my favorits Shirley Temple movies for sure! There are only a hand full of her films that I will always remember and this is one of them. Heidi,Bright Eyes and Curly Top were the others. The DVD has both Black and White and Colorized version. I am not a fan of colorizing anything, but since they kept the original intact, I did enjoy watching both.
Another Shirley Temple Classic Comes To DVD in Restored Versions !.......2006-06-23
1935's "The Little Colonel" is one of four feature films Shirley Temple made for Fox Studios and is also one of my favorites of her films ! Set in the Civil War,Temple plays a young girl to her already gruff, but lovable grandfather colonel (played well by Lionel Barrymore) as they try to patch up their troubled family, but things get in the way with Temple's father in a bad loan deal with his so-called 'friends'.This is the film that features the classic and much-imitated dancing on the stairs routine with Temple and co-star Bill Robinson, the first of four films they would do together."Gone With The Wind" it isn't,but with a stellar cast, good solid direction by David Butler, and the classic dance sequence, this is a very good and well-made film with careful pace, hilarious scenes, and serious moments that will appeal to any member of the family old or new ! Recommended !
ABOUT THE DVD:
This is the very first time that Fox has released this very good film on DVD as part of the Volume 3 Collection of Temple's films which contains both a restored black & white version of the film (with the original Technicolor ending) and a brand-new digitally remastered colorized version as well. The restored black & white print used here on this disc is superb,if not very very good with a few instances of film grain and scratches.Speaking of the Technicolor ending, previous video releases of this film inexplicably edit out the ending of the film, notably in the original 1994 colorized VHS version, but here its been beautifully restored and shows signs of grain and very seldom contrast. As for the new colorized version,it completely blows away the horrendously bad original colorized version from a few decades before as Legend Films always does an excellent job restoring and remastering their colorized films to DVD,it too retains the original Technicolor ending from the original release, but the Legend colorized version is more saturated and well-balanced and carefully recolorized as the original version. The extras (hence the four star rating) include the two same unrestored trailers for both "Heidi" and "Little Miss Broadway" that also appear on other recent Fox Temple DVD's,but it also has a rare Fox Movietone Newsreel excerpt that celebrates the star's 7th birthday and runs one whole minute.Purists will definitely stick to the original b&w,but this film's colorized appeal will bring back a dejavu dream to "Gone With The Wind" in terms of the Civil War backdrop and oh,of course that too co-starred Hattie MacDaniel who plays the maid in "Colonel".Well recommended by film buffs and classic family film fans alike !
little miss wonder.......2006-02-21

Sheer and irresistible hokum, Little Miss Broadway is classic Shirley Temple entertainment, with the moonfaced, squeaky-voiced starlet playing the singin'-est, dancin'-est orphan in New York City. Adopted by the elderly manager of a show-biz hotel, Shirley gets caught between the lovable show folk and the tyrannical landlady (superlative sourpuss Edna Mae Oliver) who wants to tear the hotel down. Naturally, there's a wealthy but kindhearted nephew on one side of the fight and a poor but lovely niece on the other, along with a cast of colorful characters, including Jimmy Durante and assorted musicians, jugglers, tap-dancing little people, and a trained penguin. It all comes to a crescendo in the most preposterous art-deco courtroom you've ever seen. Temple set the standard for precocious moppets to come; as corny as her antics may be, even contemporary cynics will fall for her radiant charm. This DVD includes both a spruced-up black-and-white version and a colorized version--though the colorization is much improved, skin tones still end up with the unsettling amber of a bad tanning salon job. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Shirley Temple stars in this entertaining musical, co-staring tap dancing George Murphy and the legendary Jimmy Durante. Shirley stars as Betsy, an orphan adopted by a kind hotel manager (Edward Ellis) who rents rooms out to down-on-their-luck entertainers. When the owner of the hotel (Edna Mae Oliver) complains about the noise her show biz tenants make and the back rent they owe her, she threatens to have the hotel closed and Betsy sent back to the orphanage.
The film is highlighted by Shirley's delightful "We should Be Together" song and tap dance routine with George Murphy, and the upbeat "Be Optimistic."

cute musical.......2007-05-05
LITTLE MISS BROADWAY stars Shirley Temple in another harmless musical confection especially tailored to her talents. As in most of her film vehicles, she plays an orphaned show-biz wiz who comes to the rescue.
Temple plays the sparky orphan Betsy Brown, who lives with her surrogate family at the Hotel Variety, a favourite spot for showbusiness types. Things look grim when the hotel is to be torn down for a new development. Betsy decides to appeal for help from the cranky landlady Sarah Wendling (Edna May Oliver).
There are plenty of prime opportunities here for Temple to display her musical skills ("Be Optimistic", "How Can I Thank You?", "We Should Be Together", "If All the World Were Paper", "Swing Me an Old-Fashioned Song"). She is joined by a talented cast, not least of which Jimmy Durante, who turns in a spirited performance. Edna May Oliver was unrivalled when it came to playing snooty society dames, and she doesn't disappoint, playing the foil for Temple's sweetness. George Murphy and Phyllis Brooks supply the romance.
LITTLE MISS BROADWAY will be a charming addition to your Shirley Temple collection!
Who doesn't love Shirley Temple?.......2006-07-23
This is a great collection and a MUST have for any Shirley Temple Collector! But who doesn't love the original Child Superstar? She is funny and timeless, way before even my Mom's time and both my Mom and I and my nieces love her! This is a non-generational must watch family movies, that not only are funny, fun and entertaining, but help instill values that seem to have been lost in our times! This collection will make you laugh and cry as Shirley draws you in with every word.

A FANTASTIC MOVIE THAT YOU CAN WATCH OVER AND OVER AGAIN!!!.......2005-09-09
LITTLE MISS BROADWAY is one of my faorute movies! The score is fantastic (with song such as 'Be Optimistic' 'We Should be Togeather' and 'Little Miss Broadway'), the lines have some humor, and Shirley Temple is fantastic!
I think that this movie should become a Broadway Show, but of course new songs should be added!
I recomend this movie for who ever loves Shirley Temple, good laughs, good songs and dances, and most of all good movies!

--N.F. Mendoza

Customer Reviews:
A Funny Shirley Temple Movie.......2007-01-14
Shirley Temple was the princess of the box office for 1936, 1937 and 1938. This movie was the final Shirley Temple movie of 1938. If you like Shirley Temple this movie wears well. This movie is cute and funny and there are several classic moments that made me laugh out loud.
Shirley returns home from boarding school because of an unspecified problem. After she returns home we learn that Shirley's architect father has lost his job and has moved from a penthouse apartment to the basement. Her father is now the electrician for the building in which they live. Shirley takes everything in stride and does her best to persevere.
Shirley Temple was about 10 years old when this movie was made, but she looks younger. She retains much of the charm she had as a little girl. Shirley manages to keep the action and the humor both high as we see her raise money for wealthy Samuel G. Henshaw, thinking that he is Uncle Sam. Shirley manages to cut the curls from a boy's hair, causing his mother to throw a genuine fit, simultaneously generating some of the best laughs in the movie. Shirley also manages to have a dance routine with Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, the fourth and last dance routine in a movie for Shirley and Bojangles.
Shirley Temple was finishing a phenomenal run as the most popular actor of her day, and the most popular child actor in history. She would have eighteen more film roles, some of which were very good, but this movie marks the dividing line between Shirley Temple the phenomenally popular child star, and Shirley Temple the modestly popular adolescent and teen star. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and if you have enjoyed other Shirley Temple movies, you will enjoy this one too!
Shirley Temple Just Around the Corner.......2006-11-04
I purchased this DVD as my daughter is performing one of the songs from the movie. However as a family we have watched it many times and all three of my children now get great enjoyment from the movie and they all know the words to all of the songs. Very happy with the movie itself and the quality of the recording
This is one of my favorites .......2006-08-26
Just around the corner is excellent in a musical way. I love this!
Typical Shirley Temple; and lots of fun.......2000-09-01
Yes, her mom's dead, and she's taking care of dad. Yes, they go from riches to rags and back to riches again. And yes, everyone lives happily ever after. But don't you want a Temple film to be that way! And along the way are some really interesting turns and twists (besides the dance steps), like Shriley teaching a mama's boy to beat the other kids to the punch in a rather anti-Pygmalian side story; and some great laughs with a very young Eve Arden and a bunch of dogs in the kennel. Sound interesting? It is really quite unique and one of my favorites of the Shirley Temple collection.
