5 out of 5 stars Straight From the Heart.......2007-09-11

This is a great love story. It's clean and decent, and worth having in our movie library. It's another one that I would highly recommend for anyone to own.

5 out of 5 stars The book on which this movie was based came before "The Horse Whisperer".......2007-08-27

This is for those who think that this movie is a slightly-changed version of "The Horse Whisperer": Pamela Wallace published her book "Straight from the Heart," on which this movie was based, in 1996.
Nicholas Evans published "The Horse Whisperer," on which that movie was based, in 1998.

5 out of 5 stars Hit the spot!.......2007-08-07

This was a very nice story. OK, popcorn for the brain, but light, filling, and hits the right spot. There is a nice chemistry between the two leads and a believable story. After renting, I liked it enough to buy it for my DVD collection.

4 out of 5 stars An Overall Good Movie.......2007-07-31

Somehow I never got to see the whole story on the Hallmark channel, so I wanted my own copy as I really liked the story, the actors, and the scenery. I was a bit taken aback by the dialogue between the two main characters when they first met, but the writers had their own ideas, I guess. I'd watch it with my grandchildren.

2 out of 5 stars 'The Horse Whisperer' Lite.......2007-07-23

I was looking forward to this film. Indeed, I made sure it was at the top of my `Netflix' queue. Unfortunately, it was the one that got away. Soon there was a very long wait. People are no doubt drawn to this film because they are longing for simple, good entertainment. Perhaps they first saw it on `The Hallmark Channel' and wanted to see it again. It's not all that great of a film, but it is worthwhile anyway. That needs an explanation, so bear with me. It certainly is easy to watch. I think great film or not, it goes down easily and becomes a casual pleasure. The subject matter is interesting even if the whole affair becomes no better than a lite (or, "light") version of 'The Horse Whisperer'.

The story is the basis for a romantic culture clash. Jordan Donovan (Teri Polo) is a photographer from New York City. She's tired of the typical treadmill of romance. In both aspects of her life she is trying to break through. Her arty exhibits of (literally) garbage fail to spark interest for a sponsor of photography exhibits. Meanwhile, her love interest, Edward, has been dating her for years, but refuses to make a commitment. Her roommate, Carla, (Christine Tucci) is presented like a half-funny, but easily as likable Rhoda. She plays matchmaker by signing her up for `Cowboy Connections,' a magazine with a "Personals" column designed to hook up couples out West.

All too neatly, Carla has taken the liberty of not only putting her friend's name in the magazine, but writing her background and answering any prospects that come to her. On Jordan's birthday, she not only has a man, but a plane ticket for her to join him at his ranch in Wyoming. Cynically, she, nevertheless, does what most people would do at the prospect of adventure: She accepts both as a present.

Even more neatly, Tyler Ross (Andrew McCarthy) has a doting sister named Laurie (Patricia Kalember) who answers his personal ads for him. Jaundiced about dating again, he doesn't think much when she calls to tell him a woman from NYC is coming to his ranch. Something must stir inside him, for we discover earlier it was he who provided the plane ticket.

Her arrival is not a friendly one. Quickly, the resentment pours through: At breakfast he tartly announces that they don't serve "espresso" at the morning table. Later, when she's falls off a horse, he nastily chides, "I don't want some big city lawyer trying to sue me." She understandably doesn't allow herself to be a walking mat. She has some counter resentments to offer: going toe-to-toe she has plenty to say about cholesterol soaked breakfasts and his backward behavior. Yet, she has a background that he doesn't even consider, and as the movie unfolds, she has several opportunities to prove herself more than a typical city slicker.

Across the way former friend, Mr. Jameson, is brazen about trespassing on Tyler's land to capture wild mustangs for his own use. United Tyler and Jordan try to oppose his lawless horse trade while working out some terms of bitterness found in everyone's past.

Some of the appeal of the movie is the scenery. Mustangs rush past with autumnal mountain horizons while the pair take on the work of the land. The old-fashioned Western score by Mader is superb for the laid back adventure, and the tenderness of key scenes works its way incrementally as it goes along.

Pleasant, enjoyable, and easy-going like a trek to Wyoming itself, `Straight from the Heart' may not have the best performances, nor the most original dialogue, but it is still a pleasurable film trek anyway. While I thought throughout the "torn between two lovers" scenario Jordan deserved better choices, who's to judge about taste if a relationship has a chance to work? After all, sometimes even a two-star film is all we really need.

1 out of 5 stars Boring.......2007-08-02

This movie is too long, makes little sense (songs are about flying a kite and a lemon) and must be intended for young children. The music is OK, very Indian, and I see lip sync problems.
The plot is typical, and the sets elaborate. I hope nobody believes this is really India. It is overdone with choreography too obvious. This movie is boring.

5 out of 5 stars one of my top bollywood favs!.......2007-06-02

First off I love bollywood films and Aish is one of my favorite actresses in bollywood. Some might think she is a bit over the top in her acting but I think she captures the viewer with her beauty and her amazing talent to draw the viewer into her characters. Hume Dil de Chuke Sanam is one of my favorite films by her and when I first seen it I thought I was going to be so disappointed in the movie because of how silly it was with it basic comedy trying to hard to get a laugh. I was glad I wanted the whole thing and seen the point that the film was making but having a beginning that was so childish filled with puppy love but towards the end when Nandani understood what love was as an adult was wonderful. I feel in love with the soundtrack and Tdap Tdap still grabs my heart when I hear it. Wonderful film and it doesn't make alot of people think but as an adult I understand the logic when we say "thats just puppy love" and when you young you do not understand it until you experience it yourself.

5 out of 5 stars A truly enjoyable film for the whole family.......2007-05-20

What a wonderful movie. The cinematography is fantastic. Great acting by Aishwarya and Ajay Devgan, the epic music background adds to the film quality and heightens the emotional effect of the movie, and the directing is superb. You get to see two different sides of Aishwarya. She's fun, joyful and such a kid in the first half. In the second half, she's very reserved and sophisticated. Ajay is a wonderful actor in this film as well. And Salman Khan just plays an all around goofy character. There are many, many memorable scenes. The second half after intermissions is the most memorable part of the movie for me. It's powerful and gripping and I loved every scene thereafter. The title song, "Dil De Chuke Sanaam" is the best and has a lot of soul behind it. I truly recommend this movie. Another movie I recommend by Aishwarya is Kuch Naa Kaho. And for Ajay Devgan, I recommend Yuva and Company. He does a fabulous job in both movies.

3 out of 5 stars OK.......2007-03-09

I like the bollywood movies but this one didnt catch my interest. I loved "I Have Found It" so much more.

5 out of 5 stars A great movie.......2007-01-18

I loved this movie. The music and dance were beatiful. The story and acting was so heart felt. It was great.

1 out of 5 stars not what I expected.......2007-08-11

I didn't look carefully enough before I bought this - it's my fault. But beware. These are not the original performers in many cases but tired versions of the groups. The Fifth Dimension, the band I wanted to see, has only two original members in this DVD. Even when it's the original members, they sound anemic and old. Do not buy this if you're looking for any sort of quality of performance - these wheezing memories of the original performers are not easy to look at or listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Another great nostalgia concert from American Soundtrack and PBS.......2007-08-01

This was a PBS concert special which aired during a pledge drive, and although the lineup is perhaps not as stellar as one could have hoped for, it is still a wonderful musical experience, especially for one of my generation. If you enjoy music primarily from the 70's, get this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Every Song A Hit.......2005-10-11

Every song on this DVD belongs here. There are no duds. I especially like it because there is not another DVD or video that includes the songs listed here sung by The Fifth Dimension and Tony Orlando and Dawn. There is a separate DVD of The Fifth Dimension but it is not worth buying if you want the hit songs. I have purchased multiple copies of this DVD to use as prizes for my music students. You will not go wrong in purchasing this DVD. I have watched this DVD several times. It is worth twice the price.

4 out of 5 stars Some Great Memories.......2005-07-06

This was 60 minutes of pure fun. It was great to see artists who have rarely been seen on DVD (or virtually anywhere since their heyday). This is a good mix of 70's/60's Pop, R&B, and Adult Contemporary. The pros far outweigh the cons of this production. Seeing an artist such as B.J.Thomas who had great success with multiple hits during that era sounded wonderful and is usually only seen on the small club circuit scene. Same could be said for Lou Rawls & Dionne Warwick (although they are on many other PBS/Concert reunion DVD's). The reunion of Tony Orlando & Dawn was a fun treat and Debbie Boone making an appearance to sing her huge 70's classic was a visual and listening pleasure.

Groups that only partially have original members such as The 5th Dimension, The Association and Peaches & Herb sound good with replacement singers.

I would rate this May 2003 recording the following way:

Audio quality: 4.5 Stars
Video quality: 5 Stars
Acts/Performances: 4 Stars

Has a strong line-up, some fun humor and good selection of material for each artist. Hope to see a Vol. 2.

Description

Teri Polo (Meet the Parents) and Andrew McCarthy (Mannequin) star as New York photographer Jordan Donovan and Wyoming cattleman Tyler Ross, an unlikely pair apparently mismatched through a singles ad. She's stuck in a dead-end relationship with Edward Morgan (Greg Evigan), who's afraid to commit, and he's being hounded by his engaged sister, Laurie Woods (Patricia Kalember), to find somebody and settle down. When Jordan's friend Carla Dimaggio (Christine Tucci) answers the Country Connections ad on her behalf, she flies out to Wyoming to meet Tyler, and at first the only thing they seem to have in common is dislike. But after learning about the first wife who died in childbirth, Jordan begins to see Tyler in a different light.

Product Description

In this live concert from Pittsburgh, taped in May 2003, Dionne Warwick shows why she remains one of the most beloved performers in the world, with still-stirring renditions of Do You Know the Way to San Jose? and What the World Needs Now Is Love. The smooth harmonies and intricate arrangements of the Association are heard once again in the classics Along Comes Mary, Windy, and Cherishsome of the most beautiful pop/rock songs ever written. Performing together for the first time in 14 years, Tony Orlando & Dawn sing He Dont Love You Like I Love You, Fire and Rain, and Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree, while B.J. Thomas croons I Just Cant Help Believing, (Hey Wont You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song, and Rock 'n' Roll Lullaby. The awesome 5th Dimension also reprise their chart toppers Stoned Soul Picnic and (Last Night) I Didnt Get to Sleep at All.

4 out of 5 stars Good but somewhat draggy........2007-07-31

This DVD is part of a PBS concert special that evidently was filmed on two consecutive days. The first volume is the concert as it aired on PBS, and this volume contains more performances by five of the artists that appeared on volume 1. The production values are excellent and the DVD is indexed so you can go to any particular song you wish, although I personally found some of Tony Orlando's performances somewhat less that inspiring. Still, if you enjoy this kind of music or are part of that generation, this DVD is definitely worth owning.
