A classic 1967 Disney animated film that's loosely based on Rudyard Kipling's book of the same name, Jungle Book tells the story of a young boy Mowgli who was raised by animals in the jungle. When tiger Shere Khan threatens to return to their part of the jungle, the other animals decide that Mowgli must return to the man village in order to ensure his safety. Panther Bagheera has difficulty convincing Mowgli to follow him to the man village and recruits the help of a big lovable bear Baloo. Mowgli's journey is one of wit, song, and many surprises. A timeless film populated by strong characters bursting with personality, great music like "Bare Necessities" and "I Wanna Be Like You," and inspiring animation by Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, and other master animators, Jungle Book captivates audiences of all ages.

This Platinum Edition includes everything from the standard bonus features like interactive games, music videos, and deleted songs to exciting and sometimes rare commentaries by everyone from modern day animators to Walt Disney himself, multiple featurettes about specific aspects of the film and its production, and a lengthy deleted scene featuring lost character Rocky the Rhino. Especially interesting for adults and Disney fans are "The Bare Necessities: The making of The Jungle Book" featurette, which explores Walt Disney's commitment to developing strong characters and his insistence that writers, animators, and song writers create a light version of Jungle Book that followed his own personal interpretation of the story, and the "The Lure of The Jungle Book" featurette, which discusses Frank Thomas' and Ollie Johnston's amazing contribution to the film as prolific animators and the inspiration and influence that their work provided for future animators including Brad Bird (The Incredibles), Andreas Deja (Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King), Sergio Pablos (Tarzan), Will Finn (Home on the Range), and Eric Goldberg (Fantasia 2000). The full length commentary by Bruce Reitherman (voice of Mowgli), animator Andreas Deja, and composer Richard Sherman with its interspersed archival commentary of Disney greats from the original creative team (Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, Woolie Reitherman, and others) is also very interesting and insightful. --Tami Horiuchi

Description

One of the most popular Disney films ever, THE JUNGLE BOOK is a song-filled celebration of friendship, fun, and adventure set in a lush and colorful world. Inspired by Rudyard Kipling's "Mowgli" stories, Disney's 19th animated masterpiece was the last animated feature that had Walt Disney's personal touch. The jubilant adventure begins when Mowgli, a little boy raised by wolves, is urged by his friend Bagheera, a wise old panther, to seek safety in the man village. Feeling very much at home in the jungle, Mowgli resists and runs off. Much to Bagheera's dismay, Mowgli meets a new friend with a happy-go-lucky philosophy of life -- Baloo the Bear, a lovable "jungle bum." Together, the three buddies find the journey back to civilization anything but civilized! They encounter a crazy orangutan, the hypnotic and sly snake Kaa, and the menacing Shere Khan! Fully restored for this 30th anniversary edition, this enduring classic swings with jazzy toe-tapping music, including the Academy Award(R)-nominated "The Bare Necessities," and the freewheeling "I Wan'na Be Like You"! A thrilling story for all ages, THE JUNGLE BOOK is an absolute necessity for your video collection.

5 out of 5 stars A review for parents.......2007-07-17

With so many Disney DVDs to choose from, is "The Jungle Book," even a new "Platinum" version, really a must buy?

Absolutely. Just 64 minutes long, this unpretentious adventure is full of imaginative characters, charming song and dance routines, interesting themes and innocent good humor. Unlike many Disney films, "The Jungle Book" doesn't strive to be high art and has no groundbreaking special effects, but it's still one of the company's best animated films. And now the film has now been "digitally enhanced," with a brighter contrast and cleaner colors. I've seen some clips from this new release, and they really look good.

Telling the tale of Mowgli, a human boy brought up in the jungles of India, the movie is a freewheeling adaptation of some Victorian-era short stories by British writer Rudyard Kipling. Rescued as an infant by a protective panther named Bagheera, the boy is raised by wolves and adopted by a carefree bachelor bear, Baloo. Disney punches up the stories with Western jokes and music (the pop soundtrack includes Baloo's and orangutan King Louie's infectious scat duet "I Wanna Be Like You" and Baloo's perky prickly pear primer, "The Bear Necessities"), but wisely eliminates Kipling's patronizing overtones.

"The Jungle Book" teaches children a number of good life lessons. It demonstrates that the world includes enemies as well as friends, and that enemies sometimes disguise themselves as friends. It argues that though its fun to pretend you're someone you're not, it's best to accept the person you are. Finally, the film teaches young viewers two lessons about love. First, as Baloo learns when he realizes he must finally return Mowgli to the "man village," that true love is unselfish. And second, as Mowgli learns in the final scene, that the ultimate male fulfillment is romantic love -- or, as some cynics view the segment, the pursuit of a cute, wide-eyed flirt.

Parents can take note of a classic Disney touch: the acceptance of both religion and science. The film begins with the infant Mowgli lying in a basket along a riverbank, a reference to Moses that's not in the Kipling stories. Later, however, there's a nod to Darwin, as the orangutan King Louie greets the human boy with an outstretched hand, saying "Shake hands, cousin."

If nothing else, adults can enjoy identifying the distinctive character voices (Kaa is voiced by Sterling Holloway, already known as the "Alice in Wonderland" Cheshire Cat and soon to be famous as Winnie the Pooh), laughing at the chorus of Beatle-like vultures (one looks just like Ringo), or wonder just what a large, furry bear is doing in a tropical jungle in the first place.

If you're a fan of the story you may also want to check out Disney's live-action (and non-musical) version, 1994's Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book. Though it's a little violent for younger kids (one soldier is sucked under a pond of quicksand and dies a slow death), this PG film is not really scary and quite the exotic adventure. Its stars include Sam Neill and, in a bit part, John Cleese.

It cant get any better than this. Disney beloved animated classic "The Jungle Book" finally gets the long overdue Platinum treatment. This new 40th Anniversary release will include an all-new digital restoration of the film and for the very first time ever, this release will feature the movie in 1.75:1 widescreen aspect ratio (Please be aware that "Jungle Book" was filmed in 1.37:1 aspect ratio and was cropped for its theatrical screenings. The movie loses a little from top and bottom here in this restored version so think twice before selling off your old copies which featured the movie in its original fullscreen ratio). Along with a 5.1 Disney Enhanced Home Theater Mix soundtrack, this edition includes a restored original theatrical soundtrack too. French and Spanish language tracks will also appear on the disc. According to dvdtimes, extras on this platinum edition will include:

Audio Commentary - Combines comments from current animators with audio from the original creative team who made the film

The Lost Character: Rocky The Rhino - For the first time ever, the near-sighted, short-tempered rhinoceros named Rocky is brought to the screen using original storyboards and original voice recordings by Frank Fontaine.

Disney's Kipling: Walt's Magic Touch on A Literary Classic - A discarded film treatment from 1963 includes scenes from Kipling's "Mowgli Stories" and more are used to illustrate Walt's interpretation of the literary masterpiece

The Lure of The Jungle Book - Many of today's biggest names in animation were inspired to pursue their careers after seeing The Jungle Book; this feature examines this phenomenon and features new interviews with Brad Bird, Andreas Deja, Sergio Pablo, Will Finn and Eric Goldberg.

Mowgli's Return to the Jungle - Learn about nature filmmaking and the experience of making The Jungle Book firsthand from Bruce Reitherman, the voice of Mowgli.

Movie adaptations of Jane Austen's classic novels were all the rage (relatively speaking) in the mid-1990s. Clueless updated Austen's Emma, which was more conventionally adapted in another version (Emma) starring Gwyneth Paltrow. Emma was produced yet again, this time for British television, as were a celebrated miniseries of Pride and Prejudice and this splendid film of Austen's Persuasion. Persuasion is the story of a love that survives eight years of dormancy and the frustrating obstacles of class prejudice in 19th century England. Anne (Amanda Root) is captivated when she meets the dignified naval officer Capt. Wentworth (Ciarán Hinds), but she is advised to discourage his romantic overtures because he has no fortune. They meet again eight years later, but now Capt. Wentworth has become wealthy while Anne's father is in reduced circumstances in the wake of reckless extravagance. A series of circumstances ensue which prevent Anne and Wentworth from expressing their mutual and inevitable love. The film's success depends entirely on the subtle, superb performances of Root and Hinds. The film builds slowly, occasionally leaving you wondering if anything at all is going to happen. When it does, you realize how carefully crafted a film this is, and the final result is grandly rewarding. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Jane Austen movie.......2007-09-12

This movie is for anyone who loves Jane Austen. It is a lovely story of two people who love each other but were not allowed to be together. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Persuaded to view...........2007-09-12

....And it was a fantastic rendition of the novel. As true and close as you can possibly get to Jane Austen's vision with the time restrictions of being a movie. I felt sorry for Ann in the beginning, angry with her in the middle, and cried tears of joy at the end. To unwillingly deny the love of her life and still deal with a family who under-appreciates her is proof of her character and strength. In so many ways you can connect to Anne Elliot and her sad life. I bought the film on DVD and it's always a favourite choice of mine on those rainy weekend mornings when I curl up on the couch in my pajamas with a hot cup of tea. It's an emotional rollercoaster as only Ms. Austen can create. If you loved the book, you will enjoy this movie immensly. I know I did.

4 out of 5 stars Stays Fairly True to the Novel.......2007-08-29

Given the two-hour time constraint, I felt this movie stayed quite true to the novel on which it is based, much more so than the recent Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley. The actors and their acting were also much more attuned to the time period in which the story takes place. I would recommend this film even to diehard Jane Austen fans.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2007-08-19

Nobody deserves this special treat, no one. It is simply too perfect, too wonderful, too beautiful. I feel that I have seen something I oughtn't to have seen, that I have intruded on something glorious and magnificent and therefore private. What a grandly conceived project, so sweet, so sour. One wants so much for it to continue and yet one yearns for the happy ending we know is coming. The acting is exquisite. The sets, the costumes! Artistic perfection is achievable, by God.

5 out of 5 stars Great classic.......2007-07-30

I love this version of the Jane Austin novel. I have watched it over ten times to date and the only movie I prefer more is Pride and Prejudice the A&E version.

A delightful undersea world unfolds in Pixar's animated adventure Finding Nemo. When his son Nemo is captured by a scuba-diver, a nervous-nellie clownfish named Marlin (voiced by Albert Brooks) sets off into the vast--and astonishingly detailed--ocean to find him. Along the way he hooks up with a scatterbrained blue tang fish named Dory (Ellen DeGeneres), who's both helpful and a hindrance, sometimes at the same time. Faced with sharks, deep-sea anglers, fields of poisonous jellyfish, sea turtles, pelicans, and much more, Marlin rises above his neuroses in this wonderfully funny and nonstop thrill ride--rarely does more than 10 minutes pass without a sequence destined to become a theme park attraction. Pixar continues its run of impeccable artistic and economic success (their movies include Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, and Monsters, Inc). Also featuring the voices of Willem Dafoe, Geoffrey Rush, and Allison Janney. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars wonderful story for kids and adults..........2007-09-06

This is one of my favorite animated pictures I've ever seen and I've seen it over a hundred times. There was a time when all my kids ever wanted to watch was NEMO! The animation is riveting, the characters are unforgettable, the story is beautiful and the humor is marvelous for kids and adults and never crosses the line. What I loved about this was it fell into line with what you would expect from fish and all the other creatures that you come across and never crossed a line into absurd or in tongue, sarcastic humor like some other fish movies I've seen. A fathers love is so strong for his son drives this film and in what has to be the funniest supporting fish, um..actress in an animated film I've ever seen. Ellen DeGeneres as Dory is amazing.

5 out of 5 stars great for kids and grown up.......2007-07-29

I love all the Disney classics, and for years I didn't want to see this movie thinking it wasn't the "real deal". Well.... I was wrong! It might be different, but is a great movie..... The story, the colors, the pictures... everything is Disney quality. My little girl, now almost 3 years old, has been watching it for 6 months now, sometimes up to 3 times a day, and never gets tired. And I have to say that I watch it with her most of the times....

2 out of 5 stars Why does any story have to start with the death of the parent?.......2007-07-24

My kids really didn't need that. If you feel that way too... try some of the Pippi movies.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Pixar.......2007-07-09

Pixar has created amazing movies, and this has to be their best. Stunning scenes, capturing the beauty of the world of coral reefs, along with the mystery of the oceans. Great story and humor.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BE CORRUPTED BY THIS MOVIE!!!.......2007-06-05

The movie was a little boring and looked really fake. You could tell it wasn't real and was just a bunch of silly puppets. I hope the kids that watch it don't really think fish can talk. Most of the movie is scientifically inaccurate. At one point there are a lot of "baby" fish. These fish appear, no, not as fry or something else that makes sense, but as slightly smaller versions of the adult. After this, these "baby" fish climb onto the back of a stingray (a predatory animal that should be eating them" who is their "teacher" he swims around and sings songs while the "baby" fish ride on his back. Other associations appear in this movie that I doubt have ever been observed in the wild. At one point, a clown fish is talking to a seahorse and an octopus, two of which only associate with their own kind, and one of which will kill anything to get within several feet of it! Does this happen in the movie? NO!

However, what I find most disturbing is not the numerous scientific inaccuracies, but the fact that most people that view this movie regard it as a documentary on ocean life. I have seen kids at the aquarium pointing at fish and referring to them as a "Nemo" or a "Dori".

Anyway, the stingray teacher manages to lose the baby clown fish (big surprise, what do you expect with a stingray for a teacher, you're lucky he didn't eat the kid!). And the clown fish gets captured and put into an aquarium in a dentists office with, yes more talking fish, but just wait! In this tank, there are also talking shrimp, and even a talking Starfish.

OK, now talking fish is one thing. They may not have lungs or vocal chords to produce speech, and not even close to sufficient cognitive function, but at least they're vertebrates! But having an animal without even a brain talking!? That's just ridiculous! And speaking the same language as the fish!

Now, yes, there have been strange things in Disney movies before. In Alice in wonderland there are talking flowers, and even a talking slug that smokes opium. However, Alice in Wonderland is the delusion of a madman, and does not take place in the natural world. Hence the name "Wonderland". However, does Finding Nemo take place in "Wonderland"? NO! It takes place in the Great Barrier reed, just outside Australia! Did the maker think "Well, nobody that watches this movie has been to Australia, so they won't know that the fish don't talk there"? I don't know what he was thinking, but I wasn't fooled! I personally have been to Australia, and the fish do NOT talk there! this movie makes no sense and is in no way entertaining.

After that, the fish attempt to make their tank dirty by clogging the filter, in which they succeed. However, the maker of this film has obviously never kept saltwater fish before. If he had, he would realise that after living without a filter for more than an hour, every fish in the tank would be dead. Does this happen? NO! The tank just gets really dirty and the fish remain just as alive as ever! I couldn't take it any more. I walked out of the theater after that.

Do not regard this movie as factual! Do not take your children to see this movie! This is one of the WORST places to get information about fish. Do not be fooled by this movie or the numerous other positive reviews!

Only Joel and Ethan Coen, the fraternal director and producer team behind art-house hits such as The Big Lebowski and Fargo and masters of quirky and ultra-stylish genre subversion, would dare nick the plot line of Homer's Odyssey for a comic picaresque saga about three cons on the run in 1930s Mississippi. Our wandering hero in this case is one Ulysses Everett McGill, a slick-tongued wise guy with a thing about hair pomade (George Clooney, blithely sending up his own dapper image) who talks his chain-gang buddies (Coen-movie regular John Turturro and newcomer Tim Blake Nelson) into lighting out after some buried loot he claims to know of. En route they come up against a prophetic blind man on a railroad truck, a burly, one-eyed baddie (the ever-magnificent John Goodman), a trio of sexy singing ladies, a blues guitarist who's sold his soul to the devil, a brace of crooked politicos on the stump, a manic-depressive bank robber, and--well, you get the idea. Into this, their most relaxed film yet, the Coens have tossed a beguiling ragbag of inconsequential situations, a wealth of looping, left-field dialogue, and a whole stash of gags both verbal and visual. O Brother (the title's lifted from Preston Sturges's classic 1941 comedy Sullivan's Travels) is furthermore graced with glowing, burnished photography from Roger Deakins and a masterly soundtrack from T-Bone Burnett that pays loving homage to American '30s folk styles--blues, gospel, bluegrass, jazz, and more. And just to prove that the brothers haven't lost their knack for bad-taste humor, we get a Ku Klux Klan rally choreographed like a cross between a Nuremberg rally and a Busby Berkeley musical. --Philip Kemp

Description

Disenchanted with the daily drudge of crushing rocks on a prison farm in Mississippi, the dapper, silver-tongued Ulysses Everett McGill (George Clooney, THE PERFECT STORM) busts loose. Except he's still shackled to his own chain-mates from the chain gang -- bad-tempered Pete (John Turturro, SUMMER OF SAM), and sweet, dimwitted Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson, HAMLET). With nothing to lose and buried loot to regain -- before it's lost forever in a flood -- the three embark on the adventure of a lifetime in this hilarious offbeat road picture. Populated with strange characters, including a blind prophet, sexy sirens, and a one-eyed Bible salesman (John Goodman, COYOTE UGLY), it's an odyssey filled with chases, close calls, near misses, and betrayal that will leave you laughing at every outrageous and surprising twist and turn.

5 out of 5 stars JUST TOO, TOO FUNNY!!!.......2007-09-14

This has got to be one of the funniest movies ever made. And one of the cleverest, too. Three guys escape from a chain gang, make a hit record, become "rock stars" of sorts without knowing it, escape an attack on them by the Ku Klux Klan, survive a flood, become honorary advisors to the Governor and live happily ever after. Along the way, one of them gets turned into a toad by sirens, gets squished, "comes back to life" where he, coincidentally, meets up with his fellow escapees in a movie theater which, just happens to be filled with inmates from the chain gang they escaped from. Interested? You should be. I have 2 young children and whenever we watch this movie they cannot stop laughing. Neither can I. Rent or buy this movie. Enjoy yourself!

5 out of 5 stars Funny!.......2007-09-01

there are so many other character references in this movie you forget what your watching, it is a hoot! and good songs!
Hows my hair look?

5 out of 5 stars O' Brother..........2007-08-23

This is a great movie! The plot is easy to follow and if you're well-read and a fan of Homer, the parallels will make you chuckle. The musical score is amazing and I bought it later just because I wanted to enjoy it outside of viewing the movie.

George Clooney and John Goodman make this movie shine.

5 out of 5 stars O Brother, Where Art Thou.......2007-08-15

What can anybody say about this movie! It's a real classic. Quirky, funny, sad, uplifting, delightful! Highlights the versatility of these fantastic actors, but it's not really George Clooney singing. A must-have for the film aficionado.

Ever spend eight hours in a "Productivity Bin"? Ever had worries about layoffs? Ever had the urge to demolish a temperamental printer or fax machine? Ever had to endure a smarmy, condescending boss? Then Office Space should hit pretty close to home for you. Peter (Ron Livingston) spends the day doing stupefyingly dull computer work in a cubicle. He goes home to an apartment sparsely furnished by IKEA and Target, then starts for a maddening commute to work again in the morning. His coworkers in the cube farm are an annoying lot, his boss is a snide, patronizing jerk, and his days are consumed with tedium. In desperation, he turns to career hypnotherapy, but when his hypno-induced relaxation takes hold, there's no shutting it off. Layoffs are in the air at his corporation, and with two coworkers (both of whom are slated for the chute) he devises a scheme to skim funds from company accounts. The scheme soon snowballs, however, throwing the three into a panic until the unexpected happens and saves the day. Director Mike Judge has come up with a spot-on look at work in corporate America circa 1999. With well-drawn characters and situations instantly familiar to the white-collar milieu, he captures the joylessness of many a cube denizen's work life to a T. Jennifer Aniston plays Peter's love interest, a waitress at Chotchkie's, a generic beer-and-burger joint à la Chili's, and Diedrich Bader (The Drew Carey Show) has a minor but hilarious turn as Peter's mustached, long-haired, drywall-installin' neighbor. --Jerry Renshaw

Description

Unable to endure another mind-numbing day at Initech Corporation, cubicle slave Peter Gibbons (Ron Livingston) gets fired up and decides to get fired. Armed with a leisurely new attitude and a sexy new girlfriend (Jennifer Aniston), he soon masters the art of neglecting his work, which quickly propels him into the ranks of upper management! Now the stage is set for Peter to carry out a high-tech embezzling scheme that's sure to mean the end of his job and a one-way ticket to easy street. Can he pull it off before all corporate hell breaks loose?

5 out of 5 stars This Movie is Hilarious!!!.......2007-09-13

This movie is so funny, my husband and I can't get enough of it. This is not one for kids to watch with lots of bad language and rap songs in this movie. A lot of the business aspects of this movie you can relate in some way or another. I highly recommend this movie if you want a good laugh!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Classics.......2007-09-03

This is in my top 5 movies of all time. My other favorites include Monty Python The Holy Grail, and Dumb and Dumber.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutly pure genius.......2007-08-27

This has been a favorite of mine for a while, if you havn't seen it then treat yourself, if you have then you know what I mean!

4 out of 5 stars realistically funny for the office worker.......2007-08-23

This movie is hilarious.... I thought it was amazing as I watched it in college; however now that I have a full-time job, the funny parts of this movie are things I encounter on a day-to-day basis.

4 out of 5 stars A timeless movie that (frighteningly) will never grow old.......2007-08-22

As long as corporate America insists on treating people like farm animals or widgits, Office Space is going to hit home on several levels: It is a wickedly funny parody of life as a Cube Farm inhabitant; it is dead-on in all the silly and ultimately pointless exercises that upper management goes through to justify itself; and it caters to every worker's fantasy of some day Stickin' it to The Man.

There are numerous weirdly comical moments, as when the lead character, Peter Gibbons, is reclaiming his life and his sanity at the office while a rap song about "it's good to be a gangster" booms in the background; and the hysterical juxtaposition of white, straight-arrow geek programmer Michael Bolton swaying in his car to some truly off-color rap lyrics. The mumbling, goggle-eyed character Milton Waddams (EVERY office has one, you know it does) almost steals the whole show with his obsessiveness about his red Swingline stapler.

I have worked with many of the characters in this movie, and only wish that, like Peter, I had recognized far earlier in my "career" that people are not meant to live in fabric-lined enclosures and fret over things like mission statements and TPS reports.

Although the movie is a bit dated now in terms of how people dress, etc., and the rap songs in the soundtrack might be offensive to some, Office Space is a movie you will want to watch several times, so you can absorb all of the lessons it has to offer.

Description

Based on Alex Haley's best-selling novel about his African ancestors, Roots followed several generations in the lives of a slave family. The saga began with Kunta Kinte (LeVar Burton), a West African youth captured by slave raiders and shipped to America in the 1700s. The family's saga is depicted up until the Civil War where Kunte Kinte's grandson gained emancipation. Roots made its greatest impression on the ratings and widespread popularity it garnered. On average, 130 million - almost half the country at the time - saw all or part of the series.

This is a FANTASTIC movie! The DVD's are wonderful! Thank you for selling it!

5 out of 5 stars A must have for ANY DVD collection!!!.......2007-08-20

I recently rented this from Blockbuster and was TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY!!! Not only is it VERY true to the book (which I read several years ago), the acting is SUPERB from both sides (white and black). I esp. loved John Amos, Georg Stanford Brown and Lloyd Bridges; they were really "in the moment" when doing this. Queen is good too, but the acting caliber here probably WON'T be beat for a LONG TIME!!!

4 out of 5 stars New Light.......2007-08-14

I watched the roots series when it came on T.V. sometime ago. It was a pleasure watching it again. This time I saw things that I didn't see before. I will give this DVD to my grandchildren so they can see how really important family is.

5 out of 5 stars Roots-the best.......2007-08-12

I originally ordered the Roots dvd and the Roots chapter book for my African American history class since it was required study material at my college, and i was going to sell them to the next student for next quater BUT i have changed my mind. The Roots saga is a very heart touching story. It is very well made and the actors are just fabulous. I would definitely recommend this for everyone who wants to learn more about the history.

3 out of 5 stars Roots DVD.......2007-08-09

good movie, but the DVD has a small hesitation about every 30 minutes throughout the movie. Just a bit distracting.

5 out of 5 stars The Brothers do it again!.......2007-09-09

Not only is this a fantastic DVD\CD, with absolutley killer music...but it also has some seriously funny moments. Chris could be a comedian. Rich plays great guitar as usual and Mona & Charity bring authentic gospel back-up. Dave Ellis plays a couple of awesome sax solos also. Get this if you're in need of some great music and a good time.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT! Highly recommended!.......2007-08-24

Just watched this for the first time last night and ... WOW! I've always had a lot of respect for Chris and Rich Robinson because, to me, they always seemed authentic; a characteristic that is hard to find in today's plasticized music. It took a lot of guts to go out there and perform these songs in such a raw, bare bones fashion. But in doing so, and doing it extermely well, they have shown us how dedicated they are to performing high quality, real music. Buy this DVD immediately. Dim the lights, light a few candles, burn some incense, settle in on the couch, press play and get ready for 110 minutes of great Amoricana music. Music that is both intimate and powerful.

Amazon.com essential video

Originally broadcast in April and May of 1998, the epic miniseries From the Earth to the Moon was HBO's most expensive production to date, with a budget of $68 million. Hosted by executive producer Tom Hanks, the miniseries tackles the daunting challenge of chronicling the entire history of NASA's Apollo space program from 1961 to 1972. For the most part, it's a rousing success. Some passages are flatly chronological, awkwardly wedging an abundance of factual detail into a routine dramatic structure. But each episode is devoted to a crucial aspect of the Apollo program. The cumulative effect is a deep and thorough appreciation of NASA's monumental achievement. With the help of a superlative cast, consistent writing, and a stable of talented directors, Hanks has shared his infectious enthusiasm for space exploration and the inspiring power of conquering the final frontier.

NASA's complete participation in the production lends to its total authenticity, right down to the use of NASA equipment, launch locations, and even spacecraft. The re-creation of the lunar landscape is almost as impressive as the real thing and is further enhanced by the use of helium balloons to lighten the actors playing moon-walking astronauts. (These and other backstage details are revealed in the "making of" featurette, along with a wealth of supplemental materials, on a bonus disc in the miniseries' DVD package.) With a fictional, Walter Cronkite-like TV reporter (Lane Smith) serving as the dramatic link for all 12 episodes, this ambitious production may not be a great work of art. But as a generous and definitive example of nonfiction drama, it's full of the same kind of awe, inspiration, and humanity that led to "one giant leap" in the all-too-short history of 20th-century space exploration. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC SERIES ON ONE OF TWO MOST IMPORTANT EVENTS OF 20TH CENTURY.......2007-09-01

This 1998 HBO 12-episode series ought to be in the movie collection of every American household. It dramatically documents the events beginning with Kennedy's mandate to the American people in 1961 that we put a man on the moon before the end of the decade. It continues with Neil Armstrong of Apollo 11 taking "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" on the lunar surface in 1969. And it ends with Apollo 17 in 1972 and an imaginative recreation of George Melies' 1902 film, Le Voyage Dans La Lune (A Trip To The Moon). It also has a great selection of extras.

Each episode has a different cast, director and writer, so there is a different style to each one. Some may like this and some may not. However, the same actor does play the same astronaut throughout; so, if an astronaut went on more than one mission, that actor will play him again in the episode about that mission. Tom Hanks executive produced and opens each episode with a nice monologue. He also wrote Part 12 and co-wrote Parts 6, 7 and 11, directed Part 1, and starred in Part 12. Interestingly, Sally Field directed and starred in Part 11.

From The Earth To The Moon boasts a strong cast - many of them big television names - and some turning in wonderful performances. Most of the directors and writers are solid, but there are a few less-than-stellar showings. Overall, and considering that this is a TV mini-series, not a theatrical film, it's excellent. Space fans will still want to own The Right Stuff and Apollo 13, which form nice bookends for this series.

Here's a list of the 12 episodes, contained on five discs, with a few brief comments about each:

Part 1 - Can We Do This? - Good opener setting the stage for the Apollo program. Covers the period of 1961-65 and includes several voyages by the Mercury and Gemini programs.

Part 2 - Apollo One - Interesting investigation into why Apollo 1 caught fire, killing the three astronauts on board in a matter of seconds. David Andrews stars as Frank Borman, Mark Rolston as Gus Grissom, Chris Isaak as Ed White, Ben Marley as Roger Chaffee.

Part 3 - We Have Cleared the Tower - Interesting "reporter's eye view" of NASA and, specifically, Apollo 7, as a documentary crew follows the astronauts around, interviewing them and various other personnel. Mark Harmon stars as Wally Shirra, John Mese as Donn Eisele, Fredric Lehne as Walt Cunningham, Max Wright as Guenter Wendt.

Part 4 - 1968 - Alternating with scenes of social unrest caused by the civil rights movement and anti-war demonstrations, the assassinations of King and Kennedy, and riots at the Democratic Convention in Chicago, the crew of Apollo 8 prepare for the first manned voyage to orbit the moon. David Andrews stars as Frank Borman, Tim Daly as Jim Lovell, Robert John Burke as Bill Anders.

Part 5 - Spider - Terrific episode on the research and building of the Lunar Module, called "Spider." Conor O'Farrell stars as James McDivit, Brett Cullen as David Scott, Kieran Mulroney as Rusty Schweickart, Steve Hofvendahl as Tom Stafford, John Posey as John Young, Daniel Hugh Kelly as Gene Cernan.

Part 6 - Mare Tranquilitatis - Good episode about Apollo 11 and Neil Armstrong's walk on the moon. Tony Goldwyn stars as Neil Armstrong, Cary Elwes as Mike Collins, Bryan Cranston as Buzz Aldrin.

Part 7 - That's All There Is - Quirky episode about the Apollo 12 team who were best friends and each owned the same gold Corvette. Paul McCrane stars as Pete Conrad, Tom Verica as Dick Gordon, Dave Foley as Al Bean.

Part 8 - We Interrupt This Program - Disappointing story about one of the news anchors covering the Apollo 13 voyage. The crew hardly even appear! Lane Smith stars as Emmett Seaborn, Jay Mohr as Brett Hutchins, Tim Daly as Jim Lovell, Adam Baldwin as Fred Haise.

Part 9 - For Miles and Miles - Interesting story about Mercury astronaut Alan Shepard recovering from an inner ear disorder that had grounded him for ten years, the healing of which now enabled him to lead the crew of Apollo 14 at age 47 - and walk on the moon. Ted Levine stars as Alan Shepard, George Newbern as Stu Roosa, Gary Cole as Edgar Mitchell.

Part 10 - Galileo Was Right - Super episode about a professor of geology that NASA hires to turn the astronauts into geologists so they can understand what they're looking at when they investigate the lunar surface on the voyage of Apollo 15. David Clennon stars as geologist, Tim Daly as Jim Lovell, Tom Verica as Dick Gordon, Brett Cullen as David Scott, Michael Raynor as Alan Worden, Gareth Williams as James Irwin, John Posey as John Young, Zeljko Ivanek as Ken Mattingly, J. Downing as Charles Duke.

Part 11 - The Original Wives' Club - Interesting but tragic record of what happened to the astronaut's wives due to the stress of their husbands' jobs. Directed by and starring Sally Field.

Part 12 - Le Voyage Dans La Lune - Terrific ending to the series. Not only do we get the Apollo 17 voyage, but we also get to see a recreation of George Melies groundbreaking film of 1902. Tom Hanks wrote and stars as Melies' assistant, Daniel Hugh Kelly as Eugene Cernan, Tom Amandes as Jack Schmitt.

Bonus features include a wonderful behind the scenes featurette, a special effects featurette, John F. Kennedy's historic speech, and various still features, plus some trailers.

4 out of 5 stars Riveting.......2007-08-19

This series is a superb effort to recreate the suspense and drama of getting to the moon. The fact that landing on the moon and returning safely was accomplished 6 times, and that no one actually died in space should be a source of amazement and pride for all mankind. The sets are superb and the acting excellent. My only quibble is that the introductory sequence for each episode is overly long and frustrating as the soundtrack is running while the credits show. On one episode the opening sequence takes 8 minutes! Still a wonderful recreation and worth every cent!

5 out of 5 stars A must own for any fan of the Apollo moon missions.......2007-08-03

This set is truly wonderful, and is something that any fan of the 1960s space race will want to add to their collection. Written and directed by Tom Hanks, this was an HBO 9 part mini-TV series that won accolades and awards when it was first aired. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for Dad!.......2007-07-20

Bought this when it was on "Deal of the Day" a few months back. Dad loved it as his father's day gift. I'm not sure he's made it too far into the series but what he's seen so far he was thrilled with!

5 out of 5 stars You do not want to miss this!.......2007-07-16

If you've ever had even an inkling of interest about the decision and enormous undertaking to go to the moon, you will love this mini-series. It's practically a documentary, but with great actors. Every episode is edge-of-your-seat-interesting. I rarely guarentee that you'll love it, but I've recommended this one to so many people who have that I'm pretty confident in this recommendation.

Disney's 1967 animated feature seems even more entertaining now than it did upon first release, with a hall-of-fame vocal performance by Phil Harris as Baloo, the genial bear friend of feral child Mowgli. Based on fiction by Rudyard Kipling, the film goes its own way as Disney animation will, but the strong characters and smart casting (George Sanders as the villainous tiger, Shere Khan) make it one of the studio's stronger feature-length cartoons. Songs include "The Bare Necessities" and "Trust in Me." --Tom Keogh

It s the perfect movie to teach kids about jungle animals and have a great time all in one, great songs that just make you dance all around and a lot of comedy which I like. Great message about friendship and the right thing to do.

5 out of 5 stars Jungle Book.......2007-05-09

A Disney classic on DVD, what more could you want. Beautiful colors, wonderful music and an enchanting tale of boy cub raised in the jungle.

5 out of 5 stars Cute Characters, Great Songs and Sweet Story Make this a Disney Classic .......2007-02-04

Though it diverges wildly from the the original story by Rudyard Kipling Disney's THE JUNGLE BOOK is one of the mouse's best classic animated musical movies. The voice actors are excellent and the songs are clever, memorable and move the story forward. There is enough action and humor for adults to enjoy the movie and though there are villains they are not too scary for the little ones. All ends happily though bittersweetly.

5 out of 5 stars Still love this movie..........2007-01-12

My Daddy took me to see this movie when I was a small child. This movie has been a lasting and happy memory of my childhood, so I was thrilled when my grandson fell in love with it also. I had a VHS version of the movie and when it was destroyed I panicked because Disney had already stopped production of it. After checking EVERYWHERE I finally located the movie with Amazon.com as my middleman. I ordered the CD version, which was not cheap, but I got it at the best price through Amazon.
My grandson is singing with the movie again and happy. This movie is timeless and well worth the price paid.

Manic energy and an agreeable level of comic insanity turn Just Friends into the kind of brainless comedy you can enjoy as a modest guilty pleasure. If you liked director Roger Kumble's previous comedy The Sweetest Thing (and let's face it, that movie had some really funny moments), chances are you'll get at least a few solid belly-laughs from this not-so-high-concept premise, in which a formerly fat high-schooler named Chris (Ryan Reynolds) is transformed, ten years later, into a womanizing music executive with a high-profile client (Anna Faris) in the Britney Spears/Christina Aguilera mold. As it zips along with some broad-stroked slapstick and snappy one-liners, the screenplay by Adam Tex Davis contrives to reunite Chris with Jamie (Amy Smart), the former cheerleader who was the great, unrequited love of Chris' miserable high-school life. By his narcissistic logic, he'll seduce her by treating her badly (i.e. she'll want what she thinks she can't have), but he gets unexpected competition in the form of a "Mr. Sensitive" type (Chris Klein, from American Pie), and it's pretty much Hollywood formula from there on, as Just Friends loses momentum without losing its basic appeal. And while Reynolds invests his character with an unexpected degree of emotional nuance, Faris (Scary Movie 3) pulls out all the stops, going deliriously over-the-top to maintain her reputation as a rising comedy starlet with a (hopefully) promising future. We're not talking rocket science here, folks... just sit back, take off your thinking cap, and have some fun. --Jeff Shannon
