The second most-watched miniseries (after Roots) of all time, The Thorn Birds was originally broadcast in 1983 and captivated viewers with its story of a lifelong conflict between the spirit and the flesh. Adapted from the bestselling novel by Colleen McCullough, the production stars Richard Chamberlain as a Catholic priest named Ralph de Bricassart, whose life in Australia between 1920 and 1962 is one long torment as he pines for his lover, Meggie Cleary (Rachel Ward), while seeking advancement in his clergyman career. The passion and the guilt make for compelling drama, but a stellar cast of supporting players adds muscle to the proceedings: Barbara Stanwyck (who won an Emmy for her work as Meggie's tough aunt), Jean Simmons, Richard Kiley, Christopher Plummer, Bryan Brown, and Mare Winningham. Chamberlain, who was something of the king of the miniseries form at the time, is very good in the lead, as is the often-underrated Ward. Their affair is indeed irresistible to watch, which proves to be true, too, of the story's thick weave of church politics, forbidden desire, social change over decades, and family secrets. --Tom Keogh

True Bittersweet Romance.......2007-07-12

This has been one of my favorite miniseries since it originally came out.I was so pleased to be able to get a CD of it! Those who are not familiar with it will be swept away in the drama of this bittersweet romance.

The King of all Mini Series!.......2007-06-03

This is the Mother of all Mini Series. This was a popular Genre in the 70s and 80s This Epic is superb for the casting, the plot and the writing. It takes several days to enjoy the scope of this timeless story of romance, love, history and passion. It is a magnificent work of storytelling and it is timeless.

Both of these omissions are rectified by the book and accompanying CD. Plus the Dulcimer the book "Case History of a film score" has more: the piano when Ralph sees Meggy slowly coming down the stairs at Mary's birthday party... . This music is missing from the Varese cd, but it is here on this extra cd - Case History. It's wonderful!!

I love this mini series. It's romantic, and heart breaking. It a very beautiful movie. The Thorn Birds: Missing years wasn't as appealing to me as the first one was. It lacked something. I recommend this movie.

It was so good to see this mini-series again and all together with no commercials. I just loved getting caught up in the characters and the drama in their lives. BUT, I did not like The Missing Years, just leave The Thorn Birds alone!

I won't get into the pros and cons of the editing, but this was a great story when the TV mini series came out, and its still a great story as time has shown. The DVD recording was of good quality.

Forever gold! What a pleasure to relive the whole Thornbird saga all over again. Took me two days to finish, from the beginning to the end, could not stop. Picture and sound were excellent, just as I could remember it when it first ran on tv over 20 years ago. And at the price, it's a bargain! Go on, spoil yourself, and add the Thorn Birds Collector's Edition to your collection.
