Product Description

""Upbeat, athletic-style yoga class of basic standing and floor postures."" Shape Magazine Two complete yoga workouts led by a friendly, down-to-earth instructor. They both feature a medley of classic yoga poses (e.g. downward facing dog, plank, warrior, cobra, triangle and mountain pose) ""Joy of Yoga"" provides the improved flexibility and relaxation benefits of traditional yoga without the intimidating attitude. Sara's unusually laid-back style makes it unusually easy to do (e.g. ""if your knees are doing this, just flop them out"" or ""now just kinda wiggle your fingers""). Her emphasis is always on enjoying the movement, not perfecting each one. It has more energetic, upbeat music than most yoga videos. The second program, ""Fat Burning Yoga,"" also features classic yoga moves. Sara's solid cuing and non-mystical style makes it an effective and exceptionally yoga workout. And by helping you achieve a balanced lifestyle and a deeper body-awareness, it provides a key element in weight-loss success (but it's really too slow to immediately burn much fat...). It ends with a short, but intense, segment of traditional ab-focused floorwork. Bright, colorful, airy set. ©1997 & 2001. (80 min.). Note: VHS version is only the ""Fat Burning"" program; it does not include ""Joy of Yoga."" Amazon.com description

5 out of 5 stars great for both beginners and advanced levels.......2007-07-31

I'm a beginner and my sister-in-law is advanced. We each own this DVD and are very satisfied with the results. She breezes through both workouts in one session and I'm gradually building up to eventually complete the Fat Burning workout in one session. The Joy of Yoga is a bit easier and I can get through it in no time, but prefer the Fat Burning workout-- it's more challenging. There are two instructors, one that works at a more advanced level, and the other who uses less coordination and they go at a nice steady pace. No doubt I'd recommend this. A great way to get toned in 45 minutes a day in the convenience of your own home!

5 out of 5 stars Invigorating and Relaxing.......2007-05-28

Such a great 2 fer 1 DVD, Both are excellent workouts. Sarah's voice is calming, relaxing, and informaive. A must have for both beginners and advanced.

5 out of 5 stars Two great workouts in one.......2007-05-20

A perfect DVD for someone looking to add variation to home yoga routines. These two routines are both challenging and enjoyable; both are demonstrated by a full class with varying ability levels represented. The workouts are also different enough to keep you coming back to each one. Both of these workouts on one DVD is a great deal.

5 out of 5 stars Great Variety........2007-04-28

I love Sara Ivanhoe, she is very down to earth and encouraging. Anyone who wants to see what yoga is all about (a beginner) should definately get this video, well worth the money. The Fat-Burning part gets your heart rate up and leaves you feeling warm yet energized. The Joy of Yoga is a light workout, good as an addition to a cardio session. Both workouts leave you feeling utterly relaxed, I go through the rest of my day totally relaxed after doing these. One warning though...there is quite alot of downward dog (which I like) but I know some of you do not. Overall a fabulous workout.

4 out of 5 stars Satisfied Customer.......2007-03-26

I enjoy this DVD, and I am a skeptic of workout tapes. I know yoga terminology so it was easy to follow and do the postures correctly. I suspect if one was just beginning that the poses would not be clear and it would be necessary to do some outside research on how to do them properly.
Having written that, if you have some basic knowledge then the DVD's are great. There are levels to work up to and Sara is a good leader. There's also an extra ab work out. I'm going to buy more Crunch DVD's. It's fun.

A workout that balances both the body and the mind can be found in the Basic Yoga Workout for Dummies. Fundamental postures are explained and demonstrated slowly with an emphasis on breathing and motion. Sara Ivanhoe teaches 12 basic poses that are termed the "daily dozen" and offers challenges and modifications to each of these moves. Ivanhoe presents these concepts in an approachable and calming manner that adds to the overall relaxed feeling that this session exudes. Newcomers to the practice of yoga will learn jargon, essential postures, and focusing techniques. Experienced participants may find some information redundant, but Ivanhoe offers such thorough explanations about each posture that you can't help but expand your existing knowledge of yoga. As the mountain pose, standing forward bend, and downward facing dog are explained (not to mention the nine other poses within the "daily dozen"), proper body alignment becomes the focus. Meticulous attention is given to the connection between breathing and body movement with several reminders to keep the spine in "neutral alignment." This session ranks great for safety and content and makes yoga accessible to anyone who "always wanted to, but never did." This is a substantial program that can introduce the basics and build your understanding of yoga. --Olivia Voigts

4 out of 5 stars Good for beginners.......2007-07-31

I've just started the practice of yoga. This DVD is easy to follow and I really like the instructor's sense of humor and her relaxing and encouraging manner. This may be too basic for someone who has taken a class, but for those who want a simple home-instruction DVD, this is a good one.

5 out of 5 stars Basic Yoga for dummies.......2007-06-25

I have been using this product for several years. It had been really helpful for me; because I have a back injury and this has alleviated some of my pain. The poses that Sara Ivanhoe demostrates can be modified for those of us who have little or no experience with yoga. Sara's instructions are not condescending or demeaning to the beginner. I highly recommend these poses to anyone who is starting out in yoga.

1 out of 5 stars Just plain awful for anyone.......2007-06-22

Basic Yoga for Dummies
Sara Ivanhoe

This DVD consists of two parts. The first is basic yoga (very slow and very long) and the second is intermediate yoga (about 20 minutes).

BASIC:
Cat pose
Mountain pose
Standing forward bend
Lunge
Tree
Standing side stretch pose
Downward facing dog
Cobra
Child's pose
Seated spinal twist
Seated forward bend
Final relaxation pose

INTERMEDIATE:
Mountain pose
Swan dive fold
Plank & cobra
Downward facing dog
Low lunge
Sun salute
Child's pose
Final twist

Things I liked: She's not half-naked so you can focus on what she's doing and not be worried she's going to fall out of her clothes any minute. There are a few (very few) split screens for showing modified poses. She explains form. She does each pose for the same length of time. It's not dubbed--she's speaking to you as she's doing the pose rather than dubbing it after it was filmed (which is awful).

Things I hated: SLOOOOOOW. Way too slow--even for beginners. We were completely bored through both sets. All of the poses are incredibly easy and alone are not enough to keep a person fit. Nauseatingly slow so you're very bored only 5 minutes into the program. Each pose is too long (6 long breaths). No free-flow vinyasa moving from one pose to the next in a routine, not even in the intermediate section. Each pose is disjointed and shown alone or with one other pose so that there really is not routine. It's not done as a class. There's a reason that most of the good yoga DVDs are done as classes--it flows, doesn't waste time, and the person at home can follow along watching different people get the pose right. I'd rather watch that than one person spend 10 minutes explaining one pose. Enough already, move on. There are irritating sirens, alarms, and obnoxious noises throughout the DVD to give it that "for dummies" alert which completely detracts from the relaxation of yoga (even in the intermediate section). Yoga was definitely not the right topic for a "Dummies" tape. There are also "for dummies" tests throughout the DVD, which are downright obnoxious. They're in the form of true/false questions given in the middle of each pose. (quite obnoxious).

I would not recommend this DVD to anyone. I'm not sure how Sara Ivanhoe got her reputation, but this is the third yoga DVD of hers that I've seen and I would never attend one of her classes. She's awful.

5 out of 5 stars Only exercise routine that has ever worked for this uncoordinated couch potato!.......2007-04-08

I admit it, I am a couch potato who spends most of her time on the computer, reading books, watching movies, or eating at restaurants with friends. I've hated exercising since childhood, since my nightmare days at gym class, where I simply could never keep up with what the other kids were doing.

In the back of my mind, I always knew I had to get in better shape, so I've tried a few things over the years: sports, running, working out at the gym, and other tapes (Taebo, Pilates, etc) but nothing ever worked. I would try them the a few times, and but quit soon because I could never do the moves properly, and/or I would just get tired but see no real benefit.

Over time, I realized that part of the problem is that I'm quite thin, so the real point of an exercise workout for me is not to loose weight (which many exercises today are geared towards) but gain strength. My sister suggested I try Yoga, as she says it had helped her tremendously with her strength.

I was quite skeptical, and put it her suggestion off for more than a year. Part of my fear was that yoga poses seemed very complicated, and I'd just never be able to do them. But after I started getting low back aches a few months ago (and I'm only in my 30s!) I knew I had to do something before my body started deteriorating! After careful research, I decided to go with Basic Yoga Workout for Dummies. After all, when it comes to workouts, I am definitely very much a dummy.

After working out with it for about a month, I must say, WOW! I can't be happier. Sara Ivanhoe presents in this video 12 beginner yoga poses designed to increase strength, flexibility, and improve relaxation, which was just what I wanted.

She starts with a detailed introduction on how to sit, and how to breathe, and then starts the routine. The poses are:

Cat Pose
Mountain Pose (basically a detailed explanation of standing!)
Standing Forward Bend
Lunge
Tree Pose
Standing Side Stretch Pose
Downward Facing Dog Pose
Cobra Pose
Child Pose
Seated Spinal Twist
Seated Forward Bend
Final Relaxation Pose

The best part for me is the slow, calm detailed way Ivanhoe explains the poses, in a non-condescending manner. I really get the message that I'm really working out my own pace.

Those who have more experience with Yoga, (or those who are not dummies when it comes to workouts and can pick up moves quickly) may find her detailed explanations boring, and wished the workout moved more quickly. However, I'm still struggling with the moves, and I am constantly learning new things from her detailed explanations. For example, in Mountain Pose, I just found out yesterday what it really means to stand with my weight centered on my feet, with thighs tight and drawn-up, belly in and tail bone down All these years, I've beens standing with my weight centered way back on my heels, belly out- a very unstable way to stand.

Even though I know I am not doing each pose perfectly, I know I am still gaining a tremendous amount of benefit in terms of strength and flexibility. I love that my body is learning every day (shall we say its actually getting smarter?) and is now starting to tell me when I am doing the positions wrong! As an added bonus, I feel calm, relaxed, and clear after the workout, which often continues into the next day.

As the other reviewers mentioned, the 'dummy' icons popping up in the middle of the performance are a tad annoying- the video would be better if they were not there. But I find I can tune them out, and its a small price to pay for having an workout routine that actually works for me.

I knew this tape was a winner when actually I WANTED to work out with it. This was a new experience for me - actually wanting to exercise? Regularly?! Basic Yoga Workout for Dummies has made it happen.

5 out of 5 stars great way to start.......2007-04-01

I used this video to learn the poses and get into the yoga atmosphere. It is a great dvd. No need to do the watch it first then do it practice, it provides enough time to be able to do it the very first time you watch it. Plus, once you get good they also have a few intermediate excercises on this dvd so you can work on those and not get bored. :-)

The name may suggest a bedtime yoga routine, but these deep stretches and restorative postures are also appropriate in conjunction with a cardio or strength training workout--or as a stress buster at any time of day. Instructor Sara Ivanhoe has a soothing, encouraging manner, but dispenses with the pseudo-spiritualism of some programs (as opposed to the real Eastern philosophy espoused in more serious efforts). She takes the time to explain the essential yogic breathing and each posture is clearly demonstrated--including modifications. After seated stretches, she teaches a series of kneeling cat poses, launches into down dog, and a standing twist. For balance: tree pose, then lunges, forward bends, and a butterfly stretch. This 43-minute practice isn't particularly advanced or strenuous, so beginners will be fine. Also included is a 16-minute "wake-up" routine, intended specifically for energizing in the morning with a standing cat stretch, pyramid pose and a squat. --Kimberly Heinrichs

5 out of 5 stars Great yoga workout..........2007-09-12

This is the first yoga workout I have ever tried and I love it. I usually do cardio or pilates and this was a great change of pace. I wasn't sure what to expect and ended up being pleasantly surprised. Even so much that I would buy similar DVDs in the future. The poses were calming and the music/candlelight theme was peaceful and relaxing. The stretchs and how this DVD allows you to hold the poses and stretchs longer than normal DVDs (that speed through everything) was great. At the end of the DVD I truly felt completely stretched out and relaxed. I personally love the Crunch series of workouts, and I would recommend this DVD to anyone that wants a good at home yoga workout

5 out of 5 stars my favorite yoga workout.......2007-08-31

i have been practicing yoga for 8 yrs and this is the best yoga video i have ever owned. there are 2 easy to follow workouts. the first one is about 45 minutes long its very relaxing and slow, lots of holding poses. the second one is a fast paced 15 minute workout to get your heart rate up. they show beginner and advanced poses through both workouts.

4 out of 5 stars Love the Bonus Exercise.......2007-07-13

I love this workout just for the bonus workout (15 min). With a two-year old, I don't have time for workouts that take longer than 30-or-so minutes (why are almost all yoga videos sooooo long?). And as an added bonus, there are NO downward dogs in the bonus workout (very difficult for me). The regular workout is good, too, although, I've only done it once. I just keep popping it in for the bonus workout. Great way to feel like you've accomplished something without snatching away your whole morning.

5 out of 5 stars Great instruction for beginners.......2007-05-12

This video has two sections. One focuses on relaxation exercises and the other is a shorter energizing routine--perfect for a quick morning workout.

5 out of 5 stars CANDLELIGHT YOGA WORKS FOR ME.......2007-05-09

I found this yoga workout to be perfect for the evening - the positions weren't too complex and the stretchs really worked out the kinks of the day. I really liked Sara Ivanhoe's presentation and found it easy to go along with her routine. This is a very basic yoga workout but it works wonders.

Among the most exciting of MGM swashbucklers, Richard Thorpe's 1952 Ivanhoe stars Robert Taylor as the medieval hero of Sir Walter Scott's novel. Returning to England from the Third Crusades, Ivanhoe is steadfast in his determination to raise the ransom for the captured King Richard (Norman Wooland), but the effort is full of peril. First is Ivanhoe's reunion with his estranged father (Finlay Currie), a Saxon who hates the Norman king and refuses to give his son the money. Then there's Ivanhoe's unpopular rescue of a wealthy Jew, Isaac (Felix Aylmer), from anti-Semites, and the subsequent decision by Isaac's beautiful daughter, Rebecca (Elizabeth Taylor), to pay Ivanhoe's entry fee in a tournament. (The strapped knight seeks the tourney's cash prize.) Wait, it gets worse: two of Ivanhoe's closest associates (played by George Sanders and Robert Douglas) collude with Richard's evil brother, Prince John (Guy Rolfe), to discredit their friend and steal away Rebecca and another woman, Rowena (Joan Fontaine)--who also fancies Ivanhoe--for themselves. Yes, the situation looks grim, but surprise appearances by a couple of legendary hero types toward the end help level the playing field. Nonstop adventure to make one swoon, Ivanhoe is a gorgeous treat and reasonably faithful to the Age of Chivalry. Things worked out so well for this film, Thorpe and Taylor got together the next year to make Knights of the Round Table. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Still moving.......2007-07-12

.
This is another one of those movies that proves your emotion can be evoked without any f-bombs, or any swearing at all.

WARNING: Spoiler follows.

The climax comes when, for political reasons, the Jewess Rebecca is accused of witchcraft. Sir Brian de Bois-Guilbert, the antagonist and supporter of the evil Prince John, had been making advances to her throughout the story, to no avail, because she was in love with Sir Wilfred of Ivanhoe.

To save her from burning at the stake, Ivanhoe challenges the verdict by an offer to combat the prince's champion. To play one off the other, the prince chooses Guilbert to fight Ivanhoe against Rebecca's cause, the idea being if Guilbert wins, Rebecca burns - not exactly what Guilbert had in mind.

Guilbert, however, has a proposal for her:

Guilbert: "Rebecca. I can yield now and Ivanhoe will win by default, and you will go free. I will have to live out my life in disgrace; all this I would do if you will be mine."

Rebecca: "We are all in God's hands now, Sir Knight."

Guilbert: (Angrily) "Then prepare to die - both of you!"

A tense combat follows in which Ivanhoe is almost defeated, but Guilbert is mortally wounded in a quick turn-around of events. As he lies dying, Rebecca goes to him out of sorrow, and he says to her, "Rebecca, fate had me instead of Ivanhoe love you. God be with you always." And he dies.

I know this dialog might sound a little corny by today's standards, but I think good actors saying, "We are all in God's hands now, Sir Knight" is a lot more moving than, "[...] you and the horse you rode in on, [...]" and "Fate had me instead of Ivanhoe love you. God be with you always" is infinitely better than, "[...] you, [...]!"

But then again, that's just me.

4 out of 5 stars Ivanhoe oldie but goodie.......2007-05-21

A classic film with all the bells & whistles. Considering how old this film is it still holds great character performance and directorship.

5 out of 5 stars Ivanhoe.......2007-03-22

This is a great movie that depicts honor, love and chivalry. I would recommend it to anyone. The movie is one that I am proud to own and that I will watch over and over again.

4 out of 5 stars Great classic film from a great book useful in the classroom.......2007-01-23

This is a great classic film produced in the over the top old Hollywood style. Great way to introduce students to an even greater book. My students now have a visual picture of the early Middle Ages, though stylized, removed them out of their constant current culture mindset. The issue of racial prejudice prompted great in class discussion.

4 out of 5 stars A spectacular motion picture rich in action epics..........2007-01-03

This loyal colorful classic account of Sir Walter Scott about knighthood flourishing in 12th Century medieval England is filmed under the direction of Richard Thorpe...

We see lavish sets, splendid scenery, castles, halls, courts, noble knights, gorgeous maidens, sumptuous ornaments, fancy dresses, jousting fields, tournaments, elegant pavilions, brilliant tents, costumed horses, armors, swords, shields, bows and arrows...

To seek the freedom of King Richard The Lion-Hearted imprisoned by Leopold of Austria, a Saxon knight, Wilfrid of Ivanhoe (Robert Taylor), asks the help of Isaac of York (Felix Aylmer), a persecuted Jewish merchant, to raise l50,000 marks of silver... Prince John (Guy Rolfe), his treacherous brother, was conspiring with the Norman Knights to seize his throne..

The best moments of film were: When Ivanhoe, disguised as a Black Knight, enters the tournament at Ashby; the siege of Torquilstone Castle; the attack of Locksley and his bowmen; and the dramatic fight-to-the-death, with mace and ax, between Bois Guilbert and Ivanhoe...

Robert Taylor is the exact choice for a handsome, vigorous, gentile medieval hero who loves Rowena, and he is loved by Rebecca, creating a romantic triangle... Taylor plays the part with dignity, vitality and energy, rising high the age of Chivalry...

Elizabeth Taylor is sweet, sincere and beautiful... We see love through her beautiful violet eyes... Joan Fontaine, at the contrary, is far to be engaged with the part... She seems so cold and indifferent as the Saxon heiress...

George Sanders gives a splendid performance as the villainous Norman knight whose heart was stronger than his sword... He wants Rebecca at any price...

Robert Douglas plays the ambitious Sir Hugh De Bracy who had a taste for beauty and love for money... This great actor crossed swords with Errol Flynn in "Adventures of Don Juan," with Burt Lancaster in "The Flame and the Arrow," with Cornel Wilde in "At Sword's Point," and with Lawrence Harvey in King Richard and the Crusaders."

With three Academy Award Nominations for Best Picture, Best cinematography, and Best Score, "Ivanhoe" remains a spectacular motion picture rich in action epics...

5 out of 5 stars Great Value.......2007-06-11

I have to say this is probably one of the best purchases I have made on Amazon.com. Sara Ivanhoe is an absolutely charming instructor. I enjoy Yoga, but sometimes I just don't have time for a 45-60 minute routine. These routines fit perfectly into my workout schedule. I can do my cardio and then do a quick Yoga routine.

I would recommend this set to the advanced beginner and above. I really think you need to have mastered basic Yoga before attempting these workouts.

5 out of 5 stars Great Yoga Workout DVD's!!!.......2007-05-18

I have bought a dozen (or more) workout tapes and dvd's in the past and used each of them maybe once or twice. But I LOVE these 20 minute workouts and do them faithfully nearly every day! I have a 5 disc dvd player, so I put them all in and alternate between them. I usually do 2 or 3 discs each time but sometimes if I have time I do all 5. I still try to go to the yoga studio at least once a week but when I can't these are perfect!

5 out of 5 stars Takes you from beginner to advanced beginner.......2007-04-28

I've always been a bit skeptical of yoga, preferring instead to lift weights and run. But I got into yoga at a recommendation of a friend of mine in the military who says its one of his preferred activities. I found Rodney Yee's beginner DVD to be a little too slow. I've also tried live classes, but didn't dig the chanting and meditation too much.

Sara Ivanhoe's DVD's are a good solid introduction to yoga, and if you're in average shape, you can keep pushing yourself and notice real improvement in balance and flexibility. Now I'm totally hooked and do it several times a week. I would recommend her DVD's for someone who's looking to learn more about yoga and to push themselves into something a bit more challenging and that will help you build real strength and flexibility.

5 out of 5 stars Relaxing.......2007-09-01

I tried this video before & had to buy it for myself! It is very relaxing. Even my 17 year old niece who has NEVER tried yoga LOVED it!

4 out of 5 stars Balancing Yoga Fusion .......2007-07-01

Sara Ivanhoe is known for her precise instructions and nurturing teaching style. In "On the Ball" she focuses on core muscle groups by using the ball during yoga postures. This may seem like it would make the postures more difficult and that is the case while doing warrior. While doing downward dog (called puppy dog pose) and cat/cow, the postures are much easier with the ball.

During chair pose the ball is held over the head so you are using it more as a weight and this presents a balance challenge. So throughout you are either using the ball as a supporting feature or as a weight. If you have long legs you may find you move the ball out of the way on a few of the standing poses while it becomes more useful when doing pyramid and the final series of stretches.

Overall I felt I got a good workout as I could feel the work I'd done on the core muscle groups. The balancing aspects of yoga are slightly enhanced with the ball so you are using more muscles to keep yourself stabilized. I think this will be mostly enjoyed by beginners or intermediates who want some balance challenges.

4 out of 5 stars Great for a beginner.......2007-05-20

I've used workout DVDs by Sara Ivanhoe before, and found her instruction to be clear, concise, and adequately detailed, and her attitude to be encouraging, accepting and positive. She is the same during this DVD.

The main routine is challenging without being overly strenuous or stressful to the body. As Ivanhoe says during her instruction, the ball makes it possible to do some poses that are otherwise too precarious or difficult. I found that using the ball increased my flexibility in some poses, and worked different muscles than usual in most poses. For this reason, it is a welcome addition to my yoga library, and a DVD I use often to vary my workout.

The DVD also includes some bonus features, such as still shots of the instructor in various poses (which can be used for reference, when trying to complete the pose on your own), and "extra" poses that aren't included in the regular routine. The extra poses are explained and demonstrated just as thoroughly as the entire workout. These are good bonus features, as DVDs go.

I'd recommend this DVD to anyone just starting out with yoga - the ball makes it possible to feel like you're good at the poses, even without a lot of experience. The ball also helps to work many core muscles that regular yoga poses might miss - also helpful for a beginner looking for a comprehensive yoga workout.

5 out of 5 stars Good and fun........2007-05-01

I like this yoga on the ball. It makes yoga more fun. The ball can actually help you stretch and support your body. Very good DVD. The instructor is very clear on her instructions.

5 out of 5 stars Review.......2007-03-12

This is a perfect yoga DVD. It is excellent for those who like to work on the ball. The instructor is superb about explaining technique. It is very easy follow even though some of the stretches are a little difficult. It will definetly stretch you in ways you would not imagine. I really loved it and am glad that I purchased this yoga DVD to add to my fitness collection.

This grand six-part adaptation of Sir Walter Scott's rousing adventure of the Middle Ages makes the most of its generous running time. In the course of five hours, director Stuart Orme tells the epic tale of the idealistic young knight Ivanhoe (Steven Waddington) and his battle against the evil Templar Bois-Guilbert (Ciarán Hinds, whose thoughtful performance gives his dark character a compelling dimension). Caught between the rivalries and religious struggles are Ivanhoe's betrothed Rowena (Victoria Smurfit) and the brave, beautiful Jewess healer Rebecca (Susan Lynch), who wins Ivanhoe's heart with her courage. Set against the historical backdrop of a Britain straining under the corrupt rule of Prince John while Richard the Lionhearted fights in the Crusades, director Stuart Orme makes up for a small budget (the crowd scenes are somewhat skimpy) with sweep, scale, and the lush green British countryside of verdant forests and rolling hills, where ancient castles still stand. While this production can't compete with the majesty of the gorgeous 1952 Hollywood production, Orme creates his own vision in which Merrye Olde England is grounded in earthy colors, creating a country of both sunny fields and dark, dangerous timberlands, open sunlit courts, and cramped candlelit inns. The uniformly superb cast etches vivid characters and the length allows the novel's rich array of subplots to play out (including appearances by Robin Hood and his men and the Black Knight) and slowly wind together for the exciting conclusion. --Sean Axmaker

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Classic adventure.......2007-09-13

I have always loved Ivanhoe from the time I first saw Robert Taylor's Hollywood extravaganza. However, after reading the book as a youth, I was glad to see this mini-series expound the story with greater detail and accuracy. I would highly recommend this adaptation to all lovers and students of the classics

1 out of 5 stars The worst book-to-movie adaptation I've ever seen!.......2007-06-19

This movie is good only for its depiction of the midieval period. However, as an adaptation of a classic novel, it is absolutely terrible and utterly disappointing. I loved the BBC's Pride and Prejudice, but what they did to Ivanhoe was a massacre. The plot was changed in so many, UNJUSTIFIABLE ways that they completely took the spirit of the book away. They added a little too much murderous intrigue and too much physical romance between Rebecca and Ivanhoe. That, and while I liked Susan Lynch for her acting, she really didn't look the part of the drop-dead gorgeous Jewess she was supposed to be. (Rowena, however, was pleasantly much prettier than the cover pictures show her to be.)

Overall, the book was an awesome story and needed very little alterations. The BBC took a dependable title and made their own story up, destroying the real Ivanhoe and everything in it. I was disappointed over and over again as I wasted six hours of my life on this movie, and I was relieved when the movie was over.

4 out of 5 stars Good work.......2007-05-09

Without great actors or anything spectacular (no Hollywood style), this movie is a good choice for those who love chivalry and great tales.
It is very well done and has the kind of mystique that makes it worth watching.
I'm completely satisfied with my purchase and actually had seen it more than once.
I enjoyed it very much.

3 out of 5 stars FINALLY... a comment about dvd transfer quality! THUMBS DOWN!.......2007-03-28

I'm amazed that after reading some 40+ reviews here, not one person bothered to comment upon the quality of the video itself, i.e., the quality of the image transferred to dvd. Since the user reviews here have given us a good cross section of opinion about the content quality of this film/mini-series, I'll skip providing you with a review of the adaptation of this story, and limit my observations to the specifics of the dvd release.

This dvd is NOT of good quality. I would call it marginal, 2 out of 5. It looks as if they took a vhs master as their source and transferred it to dvd. As a result, the image is rather poor as far as dvd releases go. Of course, I understand that this mini-series first appeared in the late 90's, but that doesn't mean the dvd transfer couldn't have been done better. Either this was the best source they had available to them, or, more likely, not a lot of care was taken to find the best transfer source before approving this for release.

I suggest anyone who is considering the purchase or viewing of this dvd to do so before you purchase a digital display (plasma, lcd, dlp, etc.), if you haven't done so already. In other words, the flaws of this transfer will be less evident on any older CRT TV. As such, your best viewing experience will on a CRT, which will minimize some of the flaws of this dvd. Once you go to a digital TV, with their higher resolutions and color depth capabilities, the lack of rich detail and color will be painfully obvious. I'm not saying it's not watchable, and I am not a super finicky "videophile" either, but I think this should be said about this dvd release. You will notice a compromise in quality upon viewing this release on dvd, as compared to most other things you view on dvd.

Also, because this production was filmed for standard 4:3 ratio (squarish image, not widescreen like modern films), again, a standard CRT screen is your best viewing method. I won't criticize this aspect, given the era and constraints of the time, before anyone anticipated widescreen televisions increasingly becoming the norm.

I have rated this one "3 stars". While the transfer deserves a "2 star" at best, the content has some merit (I neither loved or hated this film.. it has it's good points, but it's not a perfect film either), so a 'down the middle' approach to rating seemed like the fairest course to take.

Also, I should note that there are a couple mistakes made in the written plot summaries provided on each of the back covers of two individual dvd cases (there may have been some on the carboard outer box too, as shown in the stock Amazon picture, but my set came without it, so I have no way of knowing). Someone didn't bother to proofread, apparently. Again, this suggests that not a lot of care was taken before releasing this to dvd.

5 out of 5 stars Sie Walter Scott's Ivanhoe.......2007-01-20

This mini series closely followed the book. In my opinion this version of Ivanhoe was more realistic than the 1952 movie with Robert Taylor. The acting was also better in the mini series than the acting in the movie.

5 out of 5 stars A Strong Compilation.......2006-07-13

I bought this set for my retired Mom, on the strength of the Pride and Prejudice. Much to my delight, I found that we enjoyed the lesser known titles like Lorna Doone far more.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful set.......2006-02-02

I bought this set for my teenaged daughter - who really enjoys period films - she, I and my husband have all enjoyed them immensely. The Scarlet Pimpernel is great fun and this is the best Pride and Prejudice ever. It's great to have these to lend out to friends as well.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it for your wife!.......2005-10-24

My wife loves Jane Austen, and this collection includes a version of Pride and Prejudice widely considered the best one. I bought these for her as a gift, not realizing how much I would enjoy them.
For the husband that can get past the stigma of watching Victorian British films, this can be a really enjoyable collection. I've even shed some tears watching these with her (except for Tom Jones, we're not big fans of that one).
This is a very good collection.

Beyond Basic Yoga for Dummies presents 12 yoga poses that skilled instructor Sara Ivanhoe calls the "daily dozen." Ivanhoe is calm, clear, warm, and patient, demonstrating each pose as the screen flashes easier and more challenging modifications. The too-frequent voiceover "tips," "mythbusters," and "warnings"--announced by sound effects--are louder than Ivanhoe's voice and become disconcerting interruptions. Since they also appear in print on the screen, the jarring voice is unnecessary. Ivanhoe herself could give any tips needed for safety and effectiveness. Ivanhoe's careful, detailed instructions for each pose keep the progression slow, and an experienced yoga practitioner could get bored. However, a beginning exerciser who has mastered a basic workout will find this program a helpful next step before going to an intermediate level. The 70-minute DVD edition also includes a 15-minute guided meditation and the option to eliminate the music--you still hear instructor cueing and voiceover tips, but you can play your own music. --Joan Price

Product Description

The Beyond Basic Yoga Workout For Dummies is the next step for anyone who has enjoyed Basic Yoga Workout For Dummies and is ready to learn 12 more postures. It is a little more advanced than the Basic Yoga program, but still features the For Dummies format. You'll discover ways to customize the workout to your level through modifications that make poses easier or more challenging according to your needs. Includes bonus guided meditation segment.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Yoga Postures for Strength and Flexibility.......2007-03-08

Sara Ivanhoe's nurturing teaching style makes her workouts perfect for beginners, but even if you are intermediate, she still knows how to present challenging postures in a way that makes you want to try them. This workout begins with a series of stretches to warm up the upper body, but you may want to walk for 20-30 minutes or do some aerobics to warm up the muscles. I found that without the walking or biking, I was not as flexible.

"The Daily Dozen" exercises are a little more challenging than the first DVD and I was actually surprised at two of the exercises because they almost seemed advanced. It was more the length of time you are required to hold the posture that seems to make them go beyond intermediate. Upward Dog is surprisingly challenging when held for six breaths. Normally I've tried this in a vinyasa style workout with flowing postures. When you take each posture and focus your attention for six breaths, this becomes a test of patience and endurance. The postures include:

Chair
Warrior
Triangle
Wide Leg Standing Forward Bend
Low Lunge Twist
Upward Facing Dog
Dolphin
Cow - I had never seen this exercise before! Total challenge!
Wide Leg Seated Forward Bend
Reclined Butterfly
Supine Twist
Final Relaxation

I really loved "Dolphin" which is like Downward dog with your arms bent and your head almost on the floor. It tests your upper body strength and balance, but feels great once you are done with the breathing exercises. Each posture presents a physical and psychological challenge which makes them even more fun.

"Cow" felt very much like an advanced exercise, mostly because of the flexibility required to even get into the posture. I literally sat there laughing when I realized there was no way my legs would "pretzel" the way the exercise required. So, you may just want to adapt that one for beginner/intermediate and it still seems to have the desired effect. Beginners will find some of the exercises to be more intermediate, and intermediate practitioners may find this workout great for developing patience.

For some reason, which I can't explain, Sara Ivanhoe's workouts leave me feeling more centered, balanced and generally happy and peaceful. It is as if the world spins a little more smoothly after the workout. A meditation session is also offered and Sara Ivanhoe teaches you a new mudra. I can also highly recommend her Candlelight Yoga workout and all of her 20-minute Makeovers.

3 out of 5 stars A little disappointed..........2004-06-14

I bought the First DVD, Yoga for Dummies. It was great because it had a section where she showed you each pose and then she actually gave you a full routine that you could practice to. This DVD only gives the instructional part but there is no routine to follow. And I agree with the other reviews...the pop-ups are beyond annoying. I do not think these existed on the first DVD and I am not quite sure why they were added. I like Candle Light Yoga and Crunch Fat Burning with Sara but I would not recommend this DVD due to the fact that it is basically instructional with no practice routine to go with the instructional.

I received this as a gift from someone that chose it for the familiarity of the brand, against the myriad of other yoga videos available. Like many other Dummies publications, it delivers an adequate amount of information in an easy-to-understand and unsaturated fashion. While I would have preferred a better exposition of the principles involved, Beyond Basic Yoga for Dummies provided a fairly rigourous and rewaring yoga workout that left me with an extremely calm feeling of energy upon completion. My biggest complaint is the frequent interruptions of the trademark Dummies tips as they're very distracting, especially when you're supposed to be focusing on the movement; Ironically enough, one of the tips tells you to eliminate distractions! Sarah Ivanhoe is a great instructor, but I think that her Crunch Candlelight Yoga video far surpasses this one if you're interested in a better understanding and demonstration of Yoga.

5 out of 5 stars Never done yoga before?? Look no further!!!! :-).......2003-10-05

This dvd is exceptional for beginners! Before purchasing this, I had never done Yoga before. I really love Sara Ivanhoe, she has a very soothing voice and makes you feel very comfortable. There are a lot of explanations before every pose, so if you have no idea to what you are doing, you will be perfectly fine. However, if you have some basic yoga knowledge already, this won't be the dvd for you. You will then find it very slow and boring due to all the explanations and slower pace. But, I would recommend it 100 percent for someone who has never done yoga before!!! Don't be afraid to give it a try!!

3 out of 5 stars Good for beginners, but chatty.......2003-09-03

For those new to yoga, this video provides non-threatening, carefully explained instruction. If you are beyond the beginner level, however, the pace soon becomes too slow. What's worse is that the video is, as another reviewer put it, overnarrated. There are four voice-overs during the relaxation pose alone! Since this is supposed to be the pose in which one pleasantly zones out, I found this to be very distracting.

4 out of 5 stars Just a Girl in her Mid-Teens...pressured into losing weight.......2007-01-02

ok...well my uncle lives in santa monica & he takes classes with sarah ivanhoe in person, & he really enjoys it...its just very strange because he weighs like 250 =) haha..i luv him though.. he came down 4 christmas & gave my brother this dvd with a yoga mat, but i stole them =) yess

I have been using this specific dvd alone since 2 days after Christmas and two days ago i weighed myself [on New Years Eve] & it helped me lose 3 pounds in less than two weeks!! some people may not think thats a significant weight loss, but i do not have that much wieght 2 lose, so for me it is =)

But, i am also seeing an HUGGGEE difference in my body, i have more energy, i eat less, i don't have as many cravings for junk food & such & i am seeing definition in my abs, legs, arms, and back etc.. A LOT OF PLACES!! i would definetely reccomend this dvd if you want 2 see defintion, maybe not if you have 30 pounds to lose.

I do this workout 2 times a day, consistantely, everyday, & after purchasing this weight loss dvd, i bought 2 more dvd's in the sarah ivanhoe series..[abs,thighs & butt] i didn't purchase the overall body sculpt with weights because i HATEEE weights..with a passion =) BUY THIS.. YOU WON'T BE DISSAPOINTED!!

5 out of 5 stars Spiritually Cleansing Flowing Routine.......2006-08-06

As you move faster through these exercises, you may feel your body heating and your heart beating a little faster. This is definitely a cardiovascular workout with aesthetic appeal. You have a beach in the background with waves gently lapping at the shore. Sara Ivanhoe exercises on the grass and you feel like you are at the beach.

The deliciously challenging twists were the highlight of this practice session. The Vinyasa sections are exciting and challenging and you move from plank to cobra to down dog. Then she ups the challenge with a flowing series that moves into an upward facing dog.

The active postures make this an invigorating and calorie-burning workout that also strengthens the arms and tones the entire body.

The special features on this DVD include a section where you can select to workout without narration and you can view pictures of the postures.

The 20-minute Yoga routines are very healing and especially fun. If you have 20-40 minutes you can get an excellent workout with added emotional benefits. I always feel spiritually cleansed and physically energized after a Sara Ivanhoe routine. I hope she continues to make more DVDs because I love her positive energy. These 20-minute routines are like Yoga Vacations.

3 out of 5 stars This DVD cracks me up........2006-06-28

As my title says, this DVD really does crack me up. First off, let me say that I like this workout. It really is 20 minutes, and it's nice and relaxing. I had never done yoga before, so it was a great introduction in that way. And Ivanhoe is very likeable and instructive.

The reason this DVD is so funny that, well, the workout is tailored for weight loss. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but this typically means that the person doing the workout has a few, or several, extra lbs to lose.

I have a mirror in my room so when I'm doing this workout I can watch myself. If I dare. I look like an elephant who has decided to become a ballerina. Basically, I've had to "modify" some of the moves so that I can actually perform them! It's just not possible for my body to do the same things that a 120-pound body can.

My only other complaint is that the workout doesn't always keep the heart rate high enough. I don't really consider it a "cardio" workout. Overall, I like to use this DVD for a relax-at-the-end-of-a-long-day kind of workout.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and energizing yoga routine in 20 minutes..........2006-04-03

This is a nice yoga practice in 20 minutes, I often do this one in the mornings as I find that it's a good way to start the day, plus it's short and I can squeeze it in before work. The title may have weight loss in it, but I don't think one should expect to lose weight with this routine. It does however, increase the heartrate as you are constantly moving and not holding poses for very long, plus you are using a lot of arm movements.

The scenery is very nice, I also like doing this video on days that I want to imagine that I am in a warmer climate. It is very colorful and the yoga outfit that Sara is wearing seems to suit the background, which is the ocean and mountains in Hawaii.

The routine does move pretty fast, especially when you are doing the vinyasa, but you perform enough times so you get lots of practice and eventually you will be able to keep up with Sara. I like the flow of this routine, plus Sara will give you options for some of the poses to make them more challenging if choose.
I would recommend this video for those already familiar with yoga, as there is really no demonstration of the poses and you do move fairly quickly.

Sara Ivanhoe is my favorite yoga instructor, I have her Crunch yoga workouts and am glad that she has her own series. I like her style of teaching and her approach towards yoga, which is non-intimidating. She is friendly and light about it, not serious in anyway which is what I like. I do yoga because I like to stretch and it's something different, she helps make it fun for me. Overall for those looking for short yoga routines, this is a good one to check out.

This DVD also contains trailers of Sara's other DVDs in the 20 minute yoga makeover series as well as her on the ball workout. There is also a photo gallery.

5 out of 5 stars Great Quick Yoga Workouts!.......2005-09-27

I am so excited about Sara's 20 Min.Yoga Makeovers! I own all 5 and use them everyday! I feel that I get a super workout and really enjoy her enthusiasm. She does an excellent job explaining poses and reminds you of your breathing! Because it is such a well-rounded, quick program, I know I can get through it even before I start. This is what keeps me popping in the dvd each morning and evening. The yoga poses are manageable for even the very beginner! I only wish I lived in Santa Monica where she teaches classes...good thing I have the tapes! :-)
