Description

KEEPING MUM stars Rowan Atkinson as an absent-minded vicar of a rural parish who is so distracted by the pressures of his job that he fails to notice his wife's (Kristin Scott Thomas) dalliance with her brash golf instructor (Patrick Swayze), his daughter's parade of new boyfriends, and his young son's regular trouncing by the school's bullies. Enter their charming new housekeeper, Grace (Maggie Smith), the answer to the family's prayers: a sweet old lady with her own distinctive definition of cleaning house - and a very unusual way of solving problems.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great dvd, great extras.......2007-09-16

The movie is considered to be one of the best british comedy. I recommend this movie for anyone who loves British comedy or those who love the actors in the great movie. I especially love the extra features. The extras alone are a great buy, if you can't decide whether to buy this, just consider the great plot of this movie and the great extras this dvd has, I'm sure you will decide to get it. You'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars Laugh out Loud funny!.......2007-09-11

I saw this in the theatre and the snickers grew into laugh out loud appreciation of this tongue-in-cheek story. The acting is fun, and somewhat a surprise - don't expect Mr. Bean. This must have been great fun to make.

4 out of 5 stars A Killer of a Movie.......2007-06-27

Anyone reared or married into a minister's family will enjoy a vicarious revenge in Maggie Smith's uninhibited, unrepentant determination to level the playing field for her family. It was strange to see Rowan Atkinson in a mostly serious role but he did a good job, mixing sincerity with "serious" humor that only the English can do. I thought the ending was over-the-top and wasn't true to the family's character but the rest of the movie was good enough to make the flaws tolerable.

4 out of 5 stars British comedy at its best.......2007-06-04

Keeping Mum is one of those eccentric British gems. The title itself is a pun and the witticisms keep coming. Great performances by Maggie Smith and Kristin Scott Thomas. The male roles were weak and the ladies were clearly the stronger characters. Grand-daughter Holly (Tamsin Egerton) is a great addition.

I've seen better by Rowan Atkinson, but overall a charming little movie. Maggie Smith as the sweet old-lady killer is classic.

3 out of 5 stars Can't Keep Mum on Mediocrity.......2007-06-02

With its stellar cast, I expected "Keeping Mum" to be full of sophisticated dry wit. NOT! I mean, it isn't a terrible movie, but three stars is actually a generous rating. I'm tempted to demote it a bit for its corniness and hokey sex humor. With the possible exception of Rowan Atkinson's character, the viewer is not inspired to care much about the main players of the story. I was more concerned about the unwitting neighbor and his dog. Animal lovers such as myself will not be pleased with the outcome. I can take a joke but this one is pretty lame. Sorry to rain on the parade of happy campers who seem to like this movie, and I don't know why Amazon has paired "Keeping Mum" with "Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont"; the latter being a MUCH better British film.

4 out of 5 stars Great family movie - Beautifully shot!.......2007-09-07

Just purchased and viewed this film for the first time. This will make you want to travel to Ireland! Truly breathtaking vistas are faithful to what we enjoyed on our trip.

The film is an interesting look into the life of a small village that is truly a community. The plot involves a mystery surrounding the death of a local villager, and the strange happenings that follow during and immediately following the funeral. I recommend this for the whole family!

5 out of 5 stars One of the very best family films of the year, maybe the decade........2007-09-06

"Secret of the Cave" is an outstanding film that takes place in Scotland. It was put together as a college project by Southern Adventist University and the viewer will have no doubt that all those connected have a great career ahead of them. It is not a film that pushes any one faith or doctrine other than how we can relate to each other and to God. Unlike so many films made by beginners, this film is very professional and there is no way any thing connected in its making can be faulted. The extras alone are worth the price. I fully applaud this project and hope the school and the young people involved will continue the good work. We need more Christian film makers like this.

Even when his trademark twist-ending formula wears worrisomely thin as it does in The Village, M. Night Shyamalan is a true showman who knows how to serve up a spookfest. He's derailed this time by a howler of a "surprise" lifted almost directly from "A Hundred Yards Over the Rim," an episode of The Twilight Zone starring Cliff Robertson that originally aired in 1961. Even if you're unfamiliar with that Rod Serling scenario, you'll have a good chance of guessing the surprise, which ranks well below The Sixth Sense and Signs on Shyamalan's shock-o-meter. That leaves you to appreciate Shyamalan's proven strengths, including a sharp eye for fear-laden compositions, a general sense of unease, delicate handling of fine actors (alas, most of them wasted here, save for Bryce Dallas Howard in a promising debut), and the cautious concealment of his ruse, which in this case involves a 19th-century village that maintains an anxious truce with dreadful creatures that live in the forbidden woods nearby. Will any of this take anyone by genuine surprise? That seems unlikely, since Emperor Shyamalan has clearly lost his clothes in The Village, but it's nice to have him around to scare us, even if he doesn't always succeed. --Jeff Shannon

Description

M. Night Shyamalan (SIGNS, UNBREAKABLE, THE SIXTH SENSE), the director who brought you the world's greatest thrillers on DVD, now creates his most thought-provoking triumph yet ... breaking international records and dazzling audiences around the globe! THE VILLAGE is a smart, edge-of-your-seat chiller crawling with terrifying surprises and frightening twists and turns. An isolated, tight-knit community lives in mortal fear of an oppressive evil inhabiting the forbidden forest just beyond their tiny village. So frightening that no one ventures into the woods ... until one villager dares to face the unknown. With unforgettable performances from Joaquin Phoenix, Sigourney Weaver, William Hurt, Adrien Brody, and newcomer Bryce Dallas Howard, this powerful motion picture is one of Hollywood's best psychological thrillers and ranks with the best of Hitchcock!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Spooky fun.......2007-09-15

Life in the tiny 19th century village of Covington Woods is idyllic; the tiny community lives in harmony, completely isolated from the distant Towns that are feared and never visited. The only problem is the constant threat of the hideous, red monsters that lurk in the woods and send the villagers rushing to their cellars every so often. Ivy (Bryce Dallas Howard), the plucky, blind daughter of elder Walker (William Hurt), has fallen in love with strong and shy Luscious (Joaquin Phoenix), son of the widow Hunt (Sigourney Weaver). When Lucious' life is in danger, Ivy asks for permission to leave the village for the first time and seek medicine in the Towns.

I really enjoyed this movie. The actors are all excellent and the creepy mood is lightened by a bit of innocent romance. Some of the characters are written as stereotypes - Ivy is the world's bravest, wisest, and most saintly blind person - but others are more intriguing: Adrien Brody gives a touching performance as a mentally retarded young man who causes trouble, and Joaquin Phoenix is sweet as the gentle hero. You'll have no trouble figuring out the twist early on, but that's OK; it's still a fun flick with a stellar cast.

2 out of 5 stars Blair witch meets Little red riding hood.......2007-09-05

A silly fear-fest that manages to be completely un-scary, the Village looks good but fails to deliver on its promising setup. Despite its attractive production values and cast, I just don't see how this film could work at any level. I will say that this film does end exactly as it should with the moral that lies lead only to darkness. Maybe instead of filming, Mnight should have just told the story around campfires to Girl-Scouts.

5 out of 5 stars Not my favorite by director, but still worth 5 stars.......2007-09-04

After having seen "Unbreakable," "Sixth Sense," and "Lady of the Water," I've become a fan of this film's director. I made efforts to look up all of his works and watch them. Though this is my least favorite of them, his work so exceeds my thoughts on other movies that this is still a "5 star" movie for me. As always, this wasn't predictable, which is why I am such a fan. Indeed, it is slow-paced, but I enjoy the leisurely story-telling atmosphere he usually creates. There is one very minor logic issue that didn't ruin the movie for us, and I won't describe here in detail because it would be a spoiler for those who haven't watched yet and for those who aren't as nit-picky as we are. As is typical for his movies, the violence level is quite low and not graphic. Bryce Howard is an excellent actress. I look forward to seeing more from her!

5 out of 5 stars Love this movie.......2007-08-30

I was seriously scared by this movie until about half way through. Then I could relax and wonder what the twist would be this time. And even though I figured it out, it was so well done that I wasn't disapointed.

Casting here is just great. All the characters are human, well-written and fit perfectly into the world created. And, like everyone else, I found Bryce Dallas Howard's Ivy charming.

With most of M. Night Shyamalan's movies, I enjoy them but don't feel the need to watch them over and over - once you see it and then watch again to pick up all the clues, that's pretty much it. But the characters of "The Village" are so engaging that this was one we actaully bought.

And what is the deal with "Lady in the Water" having a highter rating??

5 out of 5 stars We can mover towards hope.......2007-08-30

Everyone lives a full life in a self-sufficient 1800's village. We live in a symbiosis with a mysterious species. However we also live free form the evils that permeate those other villages beyond the forbidden forest. So what happens when we violate the truce with the other species?

The film is produced by M. Night Shyamalan; so there is no surprise in the formula or big picture. It is not hard to figure out the premise shortly into the story. However there are several surprising twists on the way.

The acting was surprisingly exceptional. We have well known actors that have the ability not to let their personalities overwhelm their characters.

The sets and period costumes were superb. You can see that there was a lot of time and money that went into them. You have the feel that you are there.

Although this film may not have achieved the potential in many eyes it is probably one of the best balance and almost believable stories Shyamalan has shown us. It is more than just a tale as we se how people relate and can relate under stress and great joy.

The archetype for the movie could have been lifted right out of a Joseph Campbell's book "The Hero with a Thousand Faces" (1949). The four stages making up the cycle of a monomyth are "passage: separation-initiation-return:"

The key ingredient in this modern-day version of Charles Dickens's classic is director Alfonso Cuarón, who made the glowing, estimable A Little Princess. If you saw that (and you should), understand that Expectations has those ingredients (great sense of time, place, and timing) but adds modern music and sex appeal; the latter personified by the long-legged Gwyneth Paltrow.

Finnegan Bell (Ethan Hawke as an adult, Jeremy James Kissner at age 10) is the new version of Dickens's Pip. He's a child wise beyond his years, befriending an escaped convict (Robert De Niro) in the warm waters of Florida's Gulf Coast. Finn is also the plaything for Estella (Paltrow as an adult, Raquel Beaudene at age 10), the niece of the coast's richest and most eccentric lady, Ms. Dinsmoor (a fun and flamboyant Anne Bancroft). The prudish Estella likes Finn (catch the best first kiss scene in many a moon) but has been brought up to disdain men; she'll break hearts. As the object of Finn's desires, Estella unfortunately is a one-dimensional character, yet what a dimension! Clad in Donna Karan dresses and her long, sun-kissed hair, Paltrow is luminous. She and Hawke make a very sexy couple.

Mitch Glazer's script does better by Finn. He's a blue-collar worker with a gift for drawing (artwork by Francesco Clemente). Following his Uncle Joe's (Chris Cooper) honest ways, Finn grows up as a fisherman, thoughts of Estella and art drifting away in the hard work. When a mysterious benefactor allows him to follow his dream, Finn finds himself in New York, preparing for a once-in-a-lifetime art exhibit--and in the arms of the engaged Estella.

Filled with cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki's golden-drenched light, the film has an irresistible, wildly romantic look. Dinsmoor's place is certainly gothic, Estella and Finn's longing encounters glamorous. Cuarón uses an MTV-friendly soundtrack with a confident touch. Songs by Tori Amos and the band Pulp--along with Patrick Doyle's silky score--create passionate scenes. It all ends far too swiftly with a seemingly tacked-on ending (reflecting the book, as it happens) but the film is splendid storytelling. It's a stylish, sweet valentine. --Doug Thomas

Description

The moment young Finn sets eyes on Estella, she becomes his inspiration and his obsession. Despite being warned, "she'll only break your heart," he vowed to win her love. Years later, thanks to a mysterious benefactor, aspiring artist Finn is off to New York, where he is reunited with the icy and beautiful Estella. When she agrees to model for him, Finn's dearest hopes may at last be realized-along with his darkest fears!

1 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2007-09-09

My students read Great Expectations and then I wanted to show a movie of the book as a reward. This was not it. This movie has nothing to do with the book except is shares a title. I could see nothing similiar and the language etc was so bad I coulnd't show my AP seniors this movie. I am very disappointed. The tags they suggest are Dickens and classic. It is neither of these. Its trash.

Everytime I catch this film on Tv, no matter how far throught it is I end up watching it till its conclusion. Such a watchable film. Superbly crafted andacted. One of teh few modernisations of classic tales that actually works.

2 out of 5 stars Ethan Hawke brings no expectation of acting skills to a totally ridiculous film!.......2007-06-29

Where do I begin??? Well...how about UGH!? I tried to pinpoint what I found particularly annoying about this version of GREAT EXPECTATIONS...and then it came to me; there was nothing about any one character for which I felt a single shred of emotion! I might as well have been Estella herself! I freely admit that even Dicken's original story is my least favorite of all Dickens' novels. I have seen three other film adaptations and still did not particularly care for the story or the characters (here the names have been changed as well as the time and the country).Perhaps Ethan Hawke, who plays the "Pip" character,Finnegan Bell, was my biggest objection to this film. I found him to be 100% lifeless, uninteresting and not at all an embodiment of understanding and kindness. With your lead character being so terribly portrayed, the story really never jelled for me. Gwyneth Paltrow as Estella, on the other hand, fares much better as the ice cold and victimized Estella. She seems to understand her character's tragic upbringing and the sexy allure with which she has been educated by Nora Dinsmore (a somewhat odd and uneven portrayal by Anne Bancroft).

I found the New York shots to be totally implausible. Where does anyone walk in New York TOTALLY ALONE on bright, gorgeous sunny days in Central Park West???? Come on!!! Where do leaves cascade down alley ways tucked far,far away from any living green thing??? (I understand the symbolism, but this simply doesn't work with New York City).

The design for the Dinsmore house never once changes over the years of neglect! The same vines that entwined the house when Finn was a young boy on his first visit are exactly the same as when he arrives years later. Vines grow!!!

This entire film was so implausible, senseless and uneven in production.

Patrick Doyle's original soundtrack seemed to me totally incorrect for the sensibility of this adaptation. He must have still been in his Kenneth Branagh mode!

Sorry, but this film is a throwaway...not totally...but still a throwaway!

4 out of 5 stars Beautifull movie filmed in a beautifull place........2007-06-10

I love this modern adaptation of the classic Dickens novel. Although, part of that could be because I lived in south Florida for a long time, and spent many days wondering the Ringling museum, where this movie was filmed. The sound track is also worth a listen.

If you think Zorba the Greek is a simple-minded homage to a man with a zest for life, then you haven't seen the movie. Basil (Alan Bates), a reticent British writer, comes to the Mediterranean island of Crete to revive a mine his father owned. On the way, he meets a Greek roustabout named Zorba (Anthony Quinn) and hires him to help, little suspecting that Zorba's exuberance will lead him to some dark and troubling places--frankly, if the last 30 minutes of Zorba the Greek are what it means to embrace life, some viewers will want to shut the door in life's face. But there's no denying the movie's ambitious scope and implacable force, even as it paints an alien and disturbing portrait of life in a Greek village. On top of that, gorgeous cinematography and one of the greatest film scores ever give this movie almost demonic energy. --Bret Fetzer

    Description

On the Greek isle of Crete, Basil (Alan Bates), a shy inhibited writer from England is befriended by Zorba (Anthony Quinn) a boisterous peasant with an astonishing love for life. When Zorba agrees to work at Basil's abandoned mine, it is the beginning of a lesson for the young man as he gradually moves from an observer of the world to a participant. This acclaimed classic co-stars Irene Paps and Lila Kedrova in an Oscar winning performance. "An utterly absorbing and sharply memorable film" (The Hollywood Reporter)

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A True Classic.......2007-07-12

The Film was excellent. There are two types of people who watch this film Greeks and everybody else who after watching this film wish they were Greek. I highly recommende this film to everybody and I'm not just saying this because I'm Greek. Great Cast, Great Location, Great Plot.
    YASAS!

5 out of 5 stars Zorba the Greek.......2007-07-02

Based on the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis, the multiple Oscar-winning "Zorba" is all about Quinn's indelible, galvanic performance. A bon vivant who exhorts Basil to "loosen your belt and go find trouble", Zorba is a hurricane of manic energy and strapping muscularity, but also great tenderness. Bates portrays the cerebral, sissyish Basil with perfect restraint, while Oscar winner Kedrova (as ailing French hotelier Mme. Hortense) and Eleni Anousaki (as a stunningly gorgeous widow) provide excellent support as doomed love interests. Zesty and passionate, even in its darkest half-hour, Cacoyannis's "Zorba" is an irresistibly salty portrait of Greek life.

    5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-06-11

Basil, an English writer caught up in orderliness ("I write essays") meets up with Zobra, a Greek with a huge lust for life. Basil hires Zorba to help him restart a mine he inherrited, and Zorba teaches Basil to get more out of life. It's more than a typical buddy scenario - the lessons are clearly only one way, and they're not always good ones.

There are several strong points in the movie. The humor is frequently dark, and not sanitized hollywood. The Buddhist undercurrents and morality are shown, lightly told, but no over-preachy. And rather than present a purely rosy picture of "living large" the darker sides are also explored.

It's a great movie, certainly worthy of the oscars it won, and perhaps it deserved a few more.

5 out of 5 stars Zorba the Great!.......2007-05-13

This film is, has been and always will be one of the 10 ten films ever made in my opnion. Anthony Quinn's performance is magnificent as well as Alan Bates' and Lila Kedrova's. I was fortunate enough back in the '80s to see him do Zorba at Ford's Theatre in D.C. And Lila was in it also. Sadly they have both passed away.

    5 out of 5 stars great film!.......2007-05-07

My introduction to this film was actually the wonderful soundtrack on vinyl, played while a small child, in our family living room. Much of this great music, with traditional Greek accompaniment, is often heard at Greek restaurants, too. I always had wonderful memories of souflaki, piping hot spanakopita and saganaki, associated with all of the songs!

It wasn't until some years later that I saw this great film, starring Anthony Quinn, as Zorba, with Alan Bates, as Basil, the young English writer he befriends and helps awaken to the sights and sounds of life. There is more to this film than meets the eye. For starters, it isn't all dancing and singing. There are also some very dramatic moments that I won't elaborate on, here, so as not to spoil the plot for you! I will say that the acting is superb, that Irene Papas and Lila Kedrova are fabulous co-stars, and the music will linger in your ears for days following your intial viewing of the film.

MGM did a great job on "Creature" which I just purchased. I will wait and buy "Beast" when a decent production is released on DVD. This won't see any of my dollars.

3 out of 5 stars This dvd version I rated 3 stars because it in cut and not the entire movie.......2007-08-23

I really loved this movie in its original TV mini series form which was played in two days when it was first shown on TV. This dvd shows that is it 120 mins, which means it is the direct transfer from the vhs version and has some really good scenes cut out of it. Like when William Petersen's character Whip Dalton gets drunk. They also cut out most of the relationship between Whip Dalton and Lt. Kathryn Marcus played by Karen Sillas which added to the story to make it well rounded. Thus, my rating of 3 stars instead of 5 stars. It is more choppy and you can see something is missing from the story.

**** To Those who distrabute and own the rights to the movie please release the UNCUT version for those of us who enjoy a well rounded story. ****

Thank you. I hope this review helps.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of Adventure.......2007-08-16

I can't beleive this movie was released so under the radar. I've been waiting for it to come out on DVD for ages.
It doen't even have a picture on this website and there was no effort made to premote it; even with "CSI'S" William Petersen as the main character.
I love this movie or mini series as it may be. There is so much action and adventure in it and it is just a lot of fun.
I live in Australia where the film was made and still have to wait for the DVD to come out here but American's should totally come on board and Buy this DVD.
There is so much suspense and so much great acting, you'll be hanging till the last moment.
The idea of the beast is so exciting and you'll never look at the ocean the same way again.

Under a thick carpet of green-dyed yak fur and wonderfully expressive Rick Baker makeup, Jim Carrey is up to all of his old tricks (and some nifty new ones) in this live-action movie of Dr. Seuss's holiday classic. He commands the title role with equal parts madness, mayhem, pathos, and improvisational genius, channeling Grinchness through his own screen persona so smoothly that fans of both Carrey and Dr. Seuss will be thoroughly satisfied. Adding to the fun is a perfectly pitched back-story sequence (accompanied by Anthony Hopkins's narration) that explains how the Grinch came to hate Christmas, with a heart "two sizes too small." Ron Howard proves a fine choice for the director's chair with a keen balance of comedy, sentiment, and light-hearted Seussian whimsy. Production designer Michael Corenblith gloriously realizes the wackiness of Whoville architecture, and his rendition of the Grinch's Mt. Crumpit lair is a marvel of cartoonish, subterranean grime. Then there's Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen), the thoughtful imp who rallies her village to recapture the pure spirit of Christmas and melts the gift-stealing Grinch's cold, cold heart. You've even got a dog (the Grinch's good-natured mongrel, Max) who's been perfectly cast, so what's not to like about this dazzling yuletide movie? The production gets a bit overwhelmed by its own ambition, and the citizens of Whoville (including Jeffrey Tambor, Christine Baranski, Molly Shannon, and Bill Irwin) pale in comparison to Carrey's inspired lunacy, but who cares? If a movie can unleash Jim Carrey at his finest, revamp the Grinch story, and still pay tribute to the legacy of Dr. Seuss, you can bet it qualifies as rousing entertainment. 2 out of 5 stars So Stupid, It's Funny.......2007-02-22

I love this movie! It is so incredibly stupid and funny. It is absolutely ridiculous and slightly crass. The grinch and the whos look like a bunch of clowns. The film was predictable and completely ripped off from the animated TV special. This isn't as stupid as Barney, because at least the makers of this film actually tried to be funny, rather than just childish and retarded. This film has gotten a lot of mixed reviews on amazon.com, so be sure to rent it before you buy it.

If not for Hostel, we'd never have been treated to the gory, horrific delights so lovingly captured with sadistic detail in Turistas. Together, these movies could be spawning a radical new Hollywood-pedigreed sub-genre of extreme horror. Like Hostel, Turistas concerns a group of American hardbodied kids on an exotic foreign vacation--this time in Brazil. After a suspense-filled opening sequence of a speeding bus careening off a dangerous mountain (it's also tinged with just the right kind of humor), the kids wander into the seeming paradise of a secluded beachfront resort where they think nothing of locals who lure them one by one to their gruesome and shocking deaths. Hey, they're here to party! These excruciatingly graphic scenes unfold in the lair of a madman doctor named Zamora, who harvests organs of the still-living as a way of exacting revenge on American turistas to "give back" to the locals they exploit with their capitalist dollars. One such scene has the donor undergoing surgery without the help of anesthesia wherein the lovely young "patient" has the chance to see her still thriving innards pulsing warmly on her well-formed chest to the tune of her own screams. This stuff is not for the faint of heart (or liver, or kidney, or lungs, for that matter). But there is a fair amount of nicely staged tension, especially a "foot" chase scene in a water-filled cave that will give claustrophobics a whole new way to experience nightmares. The two most familiar faces are Melissa George and Josh Duhamel, from TV's Alias and Vegas respectively. Fans of this new world of extreme gross-out horror should be thankful that TV has plenty of cute young bodies waiting for their big screen break, no matter how many organs they have to donate to get there. --Ted Fry

    Description

Rising star Josh Duhamel (TV's Las Vegas) leads a group of young backpackers who find themselves stranded on a remote Brazilian beach; an exotic paradise, with warm sunshine, cool ocean breezes, and plenty of hot bodies. But, after a night of partying, the wayward turistas are drugged and robbed, and their dream vacation becomes a gruesome nightmare. Trapped and desperate, the vulnerable travelers are lured deep into the menacing jungle and beyond, where a dark and twisted fate too terrifying to imagine awaits.

5 out of 5 stars True Thriller Style.......2007-09-02

There seems to be a lot of strange people who do the reviews on Amazon that just look for the gore and little plot - as per the likes of "Hostel" etc .

This film is not a gore fest - it is in the tradition of a good thriller with a good storyline . The tension starts from the very beginning of the film - you get to know the main characters very quickly and all that happens to them makes a lot of sense a lot of backpackers the world over who travel to 3rd world destinations will testify to .

The acting is excellent , the script fine , the location unusual , the thrills non stop , and the horror in adequate doses to make the film believable .

Don't judge this film by a few reviews on here including Amazon's own which is fairly inaccurate (which makes me believe that the Amazon reviewer has'nt actually watched the movie but is quoting from other references). As per the reviews i read on "Vacancy" recently which were also very unfair and inacccurate by reviewers who were wantinga cheap B movie gore fest - this film is of a high quality in all aspects - RECOMMENDED to keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish - good traditional bloody thriller !!

5 out of 5 stars Better Than Hostel.......2007-08-29

After watching 'Hostel' and HATING that movie and giving it away...I found this movie MUCH better. It was worth the few dollars.
Turistas left a few things to your own imagination and left you thinking more
like you actually had somewhat of a brain. There was more actual 'writing' in it than Hostel.

4 out of 5 stars I left my Heart in San Francisco...as for my Guts, Liver, & Brain, I left them in Brazil.......2007-08-15

SHORT REVIEW, for those with limited BS-tolerance or ADD: "Turistas" puts a new spin the old slogan "Yankee go Home". This time, it's "Yankee go home, but leave your brains, guts, Liver, & Pancreas behind, por favor." Great flick, lots of blood & goop, ample tension, + bikinis. What's not to love?

LONG REVIEW, for those with too much TIME ON THEIR HANDS: Once upon a time Karl Marx, bearded great-granddaddy of really soaking the Rich, commented that the good society was one in which scarce resources were allocated "from each according to his Ability, to each according to his need".

Now, old-time Marxists---mostly your college professors and 30-something video-store clerks with English degrees, if you're wondering where they are---think that Marx was just groovy. Just right on, man. Everyone being equal, which is a great idea, you know, so that no matter how hard you work and slave & toil, you can rest in peace & comfort knowing that your slacker buddy who spends his days frying the hash (if you know what I mean) & watching reruns of "Full House"---well, you two will always be making the same amount of jingle jangle.

Now, when you point out the obvious to these guys---you know, that Communism didn't work, resulted in the deaths of tens of millions and the economic derangement & impoverishment of Eastern Europe and Soviet Russia---these guys say "well that's because true Marxism has never been tried".

I've got news for those guys: it *has* been tried! And it works, baby, as "Turistas" cleverly demonstrates.

Unlike 'Hostel', which got down in the gutter with a bunch of filthy capitalist pig-dogs who wanted to go hunting humans, "Turistas" offers more uplifting fare: a Brazilian Dr. Zamora (played to fine "get them thar gringos" aplomb by Miguel Lunardi), who, outraged over seeing poor young Brazilians get chopped up for body parts which heal rich Anglos (I should know, man: I'm waiting for some Brazilian's brain!), decides to take the Power back! Or if not taking the Power, at least taking the aforementioned guts, liver, pancreas, brain, & so forth.

Hey, at least the organs will do *somebody* some good: all these kids are gonna do with 'em otherwise is drink 'em up on Spring Break. Dr. Zamora *has* seen "The Real Cancun", you know.

Best thing about "Turistas", other than the string bikinis and guttage: the villains. You've got to be able to boast some nasties, and "Turistas" does: Dr. Zamora is a real baddy. You know that, because not only does he lecture some kid about seizing the day over his afternoon frappucino, he also whacks some talky underling. Over Frappucino. Now *that* is a bad dude.

Anyway, flip over to the kids: their bus breaks down in the middle of nowhere, and faster than you can say "I'd have gotten away with it if it hadn't been for you meddling kids", Dr. Zamora is on the scene. Or something like that.

It's all good. Director John Stockwell has a handle on sand, sun, surf, & little nubile hardbodies in thongkinis: he has helmed up chick surfer flicks "Blue Crush" & "Into the Blue". Evidently he wanted to get a little more beneat the tan line, and here he succeeds in spades. The dissection sequence in the hut is one of the more barf-inducing in recent memory, and brought to mind the old song "I've got a lovely pair of Coconuts". Good times!

Plus you've got all sorts of assorted coolness: killer villagers, nasty kids, rainswept jungle, helicopters swooping down CHOPPA-CHOPPA-CHOPPA in inky black darkness seconds after a particularly disturbing revelation, chop suey with guts in the operating room, involuntary organ donors, big ol' blood spatters, and a little manhunt with a crossbow. I don't know about you, but throw in some flashy camera-work and you've made a beachbum with a penchant for body parts outta me.

    Pass the tanning oil.

4 out of 5 stars Better than Hostel !! Check it out !.......2007-08-11

Surely, Hostel pushes gore into new level. But to be honest I think Turistas is slightly more realistic than Hostel. A group of 20s something were picked up one by one and slaughtered for their internal organs while vacationing in Brazil (wonder whether this movie is banned in Brazil for bad publicity of its tourism).

Lead charactered is a brother and a sister (a rarity as flicks like this usually they are lovers - also check out Jeepers Creepers 1 as the main heroes are also brother and sister)

Overall, the movie is well-paced, well-balanced between action, gore, humour and yes, SEX. The dvd itself is slighty disappointing. The 5.1 sound is OK but the picture transfer is too dark so it is hard to see what's going on the screen in the night scenes. There is also a good commentary by director John Stockwell.

If you like Hostel, this one is no brainer but even if you don't like Hostel, you may still like this one as this is better than HOSTEL.

    5 out of 5 stars A great thriller film.......2007-08-07

To me, this was a very scarey movie with alot of twists and turns. Yes, it is like Hostel but also different. What does make it scarey is going to another country being "mislead" and believing that someone is there to help really isn't. The intention being that you are a "product" of what they are selling to others. It is a B horror flick that I thought was very well done. It does have alot of guys without their shirts and women in bikinis so this can be enjoyable to anyone. It does have it's mistakes and flaws, but it is a cheap horror flick that is a "no brainer" so enjoy it as such. I do recommend this movie to anyone that wants to see a movie that you don't have to think too much about and you just want to have fun with.

Picture if you will two cousins, Charlie (Mickey Rourke) and Paulie (Eric Roberts), prowling the mean streets of New York's Little Italy. Charlie is reasonably put-together, a maitre d' at a chic café who aspires to running his own restaurant someday. Paulie is an incurable flake who can't resist a temptation or a goofball scheme, couldn't tell the truth to save his soul, and keeps splashing Charlie with the street slop of his slewing trajectory through life. This includes drawing him into the circles of Mob crime, most especially Paulie's boss, that supreme sleazebag "Bedbug Eddie" (Burt Young).

Michael Cimino is said to have had a hand in this movie, though the credited director is Stuart Rosenberg--an impersonal craftsman often hired in midshoot after the star and a more volatile director had parted company. This helps account for the picture's overall lack of rhythm and its wavering between overemphatic, Ethnic-with-a-capital-E idiosyncrasy, and low-key befuddlement. Still, it has its charms, most of them deriving from a terrific cast. At the time it came out, in the summer of 1984, Rourke and Roberts were both exciting, unpredictable talents; Roberts in particular had an amazing talent for being somebody brand new--psychologically, even physically--in every film he made. But even though they're hitting on all cylinders, the boys are quietly upstaged by some redoubtable old pros: the great Kenneth McMillan, the ineffable M. Emmet Walsh, and--scoring her umpteenth Oscar® nomination as the mother of an ill-fated cop--Miss Geraldine Page. --Richard T. Jameson

5 out of 5 stars LIFE IN THE CITY.......2007-08-09

For everyone who ever met someone from NYC and wondered what made them tick, watch this movie and learn. Paulie and Charlie are perfect representations of working class wannabees who can't seem to get out of their own way. Chock full of plot twists and turns, POPE is perhaps one of the best acted films I have ever seen. Although every character is quite stereotypically portrayed, that's the point. Working class people, cops, mobsters, waiters, busboys, bartenders, and all other players are painting a perfect scene of the blue collar ethos that is part of NYC whether you are Irish, Jewish, German or Italian. Stereotypes run the city. They define people, and nobody will ever go broke following them. Your only real problems come when you try to go against them. Watch and learn. I can't find a flaw in anyone's performance in this film.

A great movie, with a number of fantastic performances. If for no other reason, rent it to see Geraldine Page's fantastic performance.

P.S. You'll be humming Sinatra for weeks after watching this gem!
