The 1968 version of Sweet November was a frothy fable that worked, for the most part, due to the charmingly offbeat chemistry of costars Sandy Dennis and Anthony Newley. For this turn-of-the-millennium remake, Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron do their best to ground the fable in a more sophisticated reality, but that's just what this movie doesn't need. The premise is preposterous to begin with, so we need credible fantasy to leap over chasms of logic and ease into what should be a tear-jerking variation of Love Story. It's certainly possible to get suckered into the movie's sticky-sweet romance, but you'll need extra effort to suspend your disbelief.

Theron is Sara, who pathologically lures men into romance for one month at a time, "helping" them before moving onto the next month's catch. She's avoiding long-term commitments because she's deathly ill--a fact revealed by hundreds of prescription bottles hidden in her medicine cabinet. Reeves is Nelson, the fast-lane advertising executive who reluctantly becomes Sara's Mr. November. He's insulting and callous until he learns the truth, at which point director Pat O'Connor makes a 180-degree tone shift that cannot possibly succeed. Theron makes the most of her movie-sickness routine, but Reeves is out of his depth, and not one but two romantic montages (set to the music of Enya, no less) only emphasize the movie's abundant clichés (the most obvious being The Patriot's Jason Isaacs as Theron's supportive gay neighbor). Cry if you must, but don't let anyone catch you. --Jeff Shannon

Sweet november (not Spanish Subtitled).......2007-07-06

I liked the expedited serviced, but what I didnt like was that this movie wasn't well described in all of their features. I ordered the movie as a gift for someone else, hoping that it included subtitles in Spanish, but that wasn't specified in the general review at Amazon's (in fact, it didn't specified what the languajes of the subtitles were, as all of the movies reviewed at Amazon's).

I really would like to know, for future purchases, that the movies listed were rated at all of their features, specifically of the languajes of their subtitles.

This movie has a sweetness and softness that I love but it still has some laughs and irony. It is a nice mixture which also includes tears and as a whole it is a movie that I do recommend. Romanticism is definitely the main ingredient. Charlize Theron has a wonderful portrayal, not usual with her.

When I saw this movie, I was not a fan of Reeves, and I only knew Theron by name. I had never seen her performances before. As I happened upon this movie on cable one night, just as it started, The first 30 minutes, I sat through with a cocked eyebrow, watching Reeves weave his character, Nelson Moss, into life. Then along came Theron, as the quirky, mysterious, wise beyond her years, captivating, and poignant Sara Deever, and after that, I was hooked.
Truly, as it is infamously told in the reviews, the last act of the film, to it's end was absolutly heartwrenching. I was just starstruck by Charlize Theron's character in this movie, her performance, everything. I also found that this is actually a REMAKE of the original from the 50's with Sandra Dee. I've yet to see it, but it peaked my interest. Although I doubt it would hold a candle to this version. I am now a starstruck fan of Theron's, and have since obsessively seen every one of her performances since. This is a MUST SEE.

This movie (although abit long) was amazing! I would not say it if it werent true. It is surprising at the end but extremely good.

Knowing how this film ends ruins it, and that seems to be the special joy of too many of the reviewers writing here and elsewhere. I recommend you just look at the ratings given, then buy this DVD and see for yourself. Yes, its an oft-times manipulative romance, clumsily executed. But its heart is in the right place, and it has much to say about modern city life. In mannerisms, costumes, and decor, the filmmakers reinforce the notion that the intense competitiveness of modern urban life, which worships the 'top dog' above all others, snuffs out any sense of our connectedness to one another, our need to nurture and be nurtured. That need is perhaps only recognized once again when it is almost literally too late. It would seem to be too late for Nelson Moss, the hard-driving ad executive, but he hasn't yet met Sara Deever, who somehow knows otherwise. This movie transcends its genre through the star quality of its two main actors, Charlize Theron and Keanu Reeves, and through the last 10 minutes of film. A city is full of walls, and the highest are spiritual. She encourages him to drop his guard, but can she drop hers? To nurture and be nurtured you have to drop your guard, revealing that you're really just feeling your way along in life, as if blindfolded. This metaphor becomes literally true in the last ten minutes of the film, where for some reason the movies big heart transcends its clumsy execution, to become one of the best 10 minutes of celluloid in all of film.
