Nearly every biblical film is ambitious, creating pictures to go with some of the most famous and sacred stories in the Western world. DreamWorks' first animated film was the vision of executive producer Jeffrey Katzenberg after his ugly split from Disney, where he had been acknowledged as a key architect in that studio's rebirth (The Little Mermaid, etc.). His first film for the company he helped create was a huge, challenging project without a single toy or merchandising tie-in, the backbone du jour of family entertainment in the 1990s.

Three directors and 16 writers succeed in carrying out much of Katzenberg's vision. The linear story of Moses is crisply told, and the look of the film is stunning; indeed, no animated film has looked so ready to be placed in the Louvre since Fantasia. Here is an Egypt alive with energetic bustle and pristine buildings. Born a slave and set adrift in the river, Moses (voiced by Val Kilmer) is raised as the son of Pharaoh Seti (Patrick Stewart) and is a fitting rival for his stepbrother Rameses (Ralph Fiennes). When he learns of his roots--in a knockout sequence in which hieroglyphics come alive--he flees to the desert, where he finds his roots and heeds God's calling to free the slaves from Egypt.

Katzenberg and his artists are careful to tread lightly on religious boundaries. The film stops at the parting of the Red Sea, only showing the Ten Commandments--without commentary--as the film's coda. Music is a big part (there were three CDs released) and Hans Zimmer's score and Stephen Schwartz's songs work well--in fact the pop-ready, Oscar-winning "When You Believe" is one of the weakest songs. Kids ages 5 and up should be able to handle the referenced violence; the film doesn't shy away from what Egyptians did to their slaves. Perhaps Katzenberg could have aimed lower and made a more successful animated film, but then again, what's a heaven for? --Doug Thomas

4 out of 5 stars Children's Version of the Story.......2007-08-21

Being animated, this is expectedly directed towards a younger audience. That does not keep it from being acceptable to older viewers, however. It generates enough interest to be worthwhile to all viewing ages.

It tells the story of Moses, born to Hebrew slaves and raised as a prince of Egypt. When he learns of his origins, he flees Egypt only to be called to return. He has been chosen by God to lead his people out of slavery.

While this tells the same basic story as the Charlton Heston epic, it focuses on different events and has, of course, a more childish approach. The crossing of the Red Sea is the undoubted climax but other than that, the whole tenor is different. It brings out some parts of the story left out of the classic. Moreover, it emphasizes a friendship between the young Moses and crown prince rather than a rivalry.

The songs seem a bit out of place but, for me, they always do in a musical. This once has an Academy Award winner, though, so I guess the music is good if you like your characters to break into song at the drop of a hat.

For those interested in the biblical content, its not too bad. There is not much emphasis on God but there are not any large scale contradictions of scripture either.

I prefer the classic version but the kids seemed to like this one.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Retelling of a Classic Story.......2007-08-03

When I first heard that Steven Spielberg and friends were making an animated version of the story of Moses and the Exodus, I was nervous that they would sanitize or reconstruct history or religiously neuter Moses. "Prince of Egypt" is the opposite: a wonderful, highly researched and magnificently filmed movie that is an animated version of the brilliant rabbinic tradition of midrash, the rabbinic literary device that answers questions and fills in gaps about stories in the Hebrew Bible. To my relief, the story stays true to the *Israelite* experience ... while freedom from slavery is obviously a universal value, this was - after all - a *Jewish* moment in history.

The characters are 3-dimensional (so to speak): Moses is the doubter who eventually must successfully confront his own fear and faith; Aaron, the peacemaker who frequently gets lost in the family dynamic; and - the biggest character treat for me - Miriam, the dynamo partially responsible for the infant Moses' survival: for the first time, a Jewish woman who actually looks like a *Jewish* woman (and no, I'm not talking stereotypical Eastern European - this Miriam is a blend of Ashkenazi and Sephardi).

The music is a special gift, especially the voice of Israeli singer Ofra Haza, who tragically died less than two years after making the movie. I was excited to hear real Hebrew Bible text.

The effects are spectacular - from the hieroglyphics that come to life during an especially frightening dream sequence to the sheer brilliance of the depiction of the plagues (the death of the Egyptian first born is especially harrowing).

We've happily come a long way from the wooden theatrics, pseudo-Jewish theology and cone bras of the Cecil De Mille classic. This "Prince of Egypt" is a wonder.

I've always liked this movie. We had it on VHS, but my daughter wore it out. So, we got the DVD. I'm so happy we did - the quality is great, and we can watch widescreen, which is quite important to me. We're very happy!

5 out of 5 stars A Most Worthwhile Story!.......2007-05-26

Although it is an animated-feature movie, the script is good and the story is very moving. So much of the historical accuracy has been maintained in this story. My family and I feel that it is time and money well-spent! I heartily recommend it to viewers of any age...

The more you know about the Civil War, the more you'll appreciate Gods and Generals and the painstaking attention to detail that Gettysburg writer-director Ronald F. Maxwell has invested in this academically respectable 220-minute historical pageant. In adapting Jeffrey Shaara's 1996 novel (encompassing events of 1861-63, specifically the Virginian battles of Bull Run, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville), Maxwell sacrifices depth for scope while focusing on the devoutly religious "Stonewall" Jackson (Stephen Lang), whose Confederate campaigns endear him to Gen. Robert E. Lee (Robert Duvall, giving the film's most subtle performance). Battles are impeccably recreated using 7,500 Civil War re-enactors and sanitized PG-13 violence, their authenticity compromised by tasteful discretion and endless scenes of grandiloquent dialogue. Still, as the first part of a trilogy that ends with The Last Full Measure, this is a superbly crafted, instantly essential film for Civil War study. For all its misguided priorities, Gods and Generals is a noble effort, honoring faith and patriotism with the kind of reverence that has all but vanished from American film - but provides abundant proof that historical accuracy is no guarantee of great storytelling. --Jeff Shannon

Description

A sweeping epic charting the early years of the Civil War and how campaigns unfolded from Manassas to the Battle of Fredericksburg, this prequel to the film Gettysburg explores the motivations of the combatants and examines the lives of those who waited at home.

2 out of 5 stars You'll fall asleep in your popcorn........2007-09-04

This movie gives dry, ponderous movies a bad name. The acting was quite good, but the writers only gave the actors long, boring speeches to enact. And if I'd had to watch Stonewall Jackson pray one more time, I might not have made it through. Okay, he was devout, I get it. Let's not belabor the point.

If you've seen Gettysburg (a far superior film) and haven't seen this one, just picture Gettysburg with the historical battle scenes cut to about a tenth of the film and the other 9/10ths consisting of those slow scenes from Gettysburg when the generals were going on and on about so many of their friends being on the other side. That's Gods and Generals.

2 out of 5 stars Script is awful but they did a solid job with battle scenes.......2007-08-11

though I was asking 'what happened to Antietam?' just kind of skipped right over it hmmmmm. Also way too much Jackson praying and boring wives of everybody. Too bad Turner couldn't have gotten a half way decent script for all his money. Probably the best scene was the fighting in the city of Fredericksburg, that was done well.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome movie of the war for southern indepndance.......2007-08-07

I watch alot of movies and this by far is one of the best iv'e seen.
it basically covers-
1.General Robert E Lee.
2.General Thomas jonathan"stonewall" jackson.
3.and colonel Joshua Chamberlain.
From the 1861 battle of mannassas to the 1863 battle of chancellorsville.
it is very well written. and very well played by the leading actors.
so if you are a civil war buff-get it, you will not be disapointed

3 out of 5 stars Too long, true, too talky, true, but worth seeing once..........2007-07-21

If, that is, you are a Civil War Buff. "Gettysburg" is a much superior film, but "Gods and Generals" has gems in it also. Rent it, watch a little at a time, enjoy the fine actors coping with an overloaded script.

2 out of 5 stars The Civil War at its most boring...........2007-07-17

I enjoy Civil War movies. I've read more books on this war than I can possibly count. I've spoken with The Late Shelby Foote, David Stroud and a number of other prominant Civil War writers. So the subject matter was flat out interesting. I was excited to see this movie. Especially after Gettysburg. This movie, however, paled in comparison to just about every movie I've ever seen on this subject. It was boring, poorly edited and the dialog was contrived and unbelievable, not to mention unmotivated. You're in a WAR! That's your motivation!

The ensemble cast includes giants such as Jeff Daniels and Robert Duvall. But the casting of several others failed to meet the mastery that was Gettysburg.

This movie was a monumental failure and one that is not likely to be repeated.

3 out of 5 stars A Fair Result From A Difficult Text.......2007-05-15

TNT hit a home run with their BOBLE COLLECTION, based exclusively on the Old Testament. This was their first attempt at a New Testament book, the Revelation of John. That is a tough one to attempt the first time out but I can imagine while it would be appealing. There is much imagery that would be a natural for the screen. This film, however, falls short of that.

The early church is facing a time of persectution. That is the official policy of the Roman Empire. People of faith are worried and are encouraged on receiving letters from John, one of the original 12 disciples. John himself is in hiding, in a Roman prison. The story is one of keeping the faith in the face of sever hardships.

The film takes some liberties but they seem reasonable. It is not as tight an effort as the OT film but it is respectable. One can learn from it but do not expect any great joy.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Biblical DVD collectors........2007-02-20

Great movie, loyal to the events that happened to the first Christians, to the book of Revelations and how St. John might have received those visions from God and great messages for us all. Well casted and directed movie. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A "Sword and Sandal" Classic!.......2006-11-06

If you are a history buff, and a "sword and sandal" film guru, like myself, you will enjoy this film. It is an historically accurate account of the book of revelations[Bible], as it was visually imparted to John[Richard Harris], the last living disciple of Christ. Even if you are not religiously-inclined, you will no doubt be entertained, and impressed with Harris's well-earned command of the silver screen.

Description

Key battles of America's Civil War thunder across the screen in two richly scaled, rigorously authentic, powerfully compelling epics based on acclaimed historical novels by Michael Shaara. The tide of the war changes during three fierce days of combat at Gettysburg [Disc 1], the gripping saga of the tactics, command errors and sacrifices behind the bloodiest battle ever fought on U.S. soil. Gods and Generals [Disc 2] reveals the spirited allegiances and fierce combat of earlier Civil War struggles, framing its tale with the fateful clashes at Bull Run, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. These sprawling films remind us of the people, passions and heroism that fanned the flames of a country at war with itself.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars God and generals.......2007-07-14

I have seen just about every Civil war movie ever made. I have read extensivly on the subject.

Gettysburg was very good however a few things were changed to make it more dramatic. But please understand this is still a very good movie.

However God and generals was superb. While Martin Sheen plays Robert E Lee in Gettysburg doing a decent job, It is Robert Duval who plays the same in Gods and generals that steals the show. He was fantastic. Alot of actors who played in Gettysburg play the same men in Gods and generals.
Such as Jeff Daniels who plays Col Chamberlain in both movies, doing a great job i might add.

While Gettysburg is about just that Gettysburg...The 3 day battle that might have turned the war towards the north. It was a crushing defeat for the south. However the war still wages on for 2 years after Gettysburg.

God and generals however covers the Civil war up to Gettysburg..

Do yourself a favor and get these two movies...You will throughly enjoy them.

3 out of 5 stars One is Classic, the other terrible..........2007-05-29

While they are both very accurate and both likely a civil war enthusiast's dream, the former, "Gettysburg" is actually a terrific movie, paced and written and acted quite well (except for some rather bad adding by extras...its forgivable). Gettysburg is a must for everyone. It is important US history of obe of our country's defining battles, told in a very convincing human manner.

The second movie included "Gods and Generals" comes from the same director, Ron Maxwell, off the novel written by "The Killer Angels" (Made into Gettysburg) son, Jeff Sharra. Unfortunately, this movie doesn't come close to what was shown possible in Gettysburg. In many instances, the movie is rendered almost unwatchable. While realistic almost to a fault, Maxwell sacrifices competent movie making for the sake of the hard core civil war enthusiasts. While the written word of the day was far more floaty and discriptive than today's writing by the masses, soldiers of day still had slang, and its hard to believe a second of the lofty impromtu speeches given by soldiers in the confusing of battle. This movie tends of be more a series of recorded speeches than providing any kind of vehicle to tell such an important story to the masses. The movie tanked at the box office and rightfully so...its an awful movie. And its a shame. Ted Turner (who financed both movies) subsequently lost faith in Ron Maxwell as a movie maker and sold off the rights to "The Last Full Measure" (the third book in the trilogy) for pennies on the dollar. Here's hoping a competent movie maker attempts the 3rd installment or Maxwell can make a return to his roots.

5 out of 5 stars The best on the Civil War.......2007-05-04

These two films are the real thing, civil war movies at their best, in addition to great drama and acting taking ones' breath away. They cover the first three years of the Civil war including the battles of Bull Run, Fredricksberg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg(Antietem is not included).

Gods and Generals follows the stories of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlin and Stonewall Jackson but is mostly the story of Stonewall Jackson and his leadership and religious beleifs. This is a wonderful folm shot on location with many reenactors and brilliant acting, a fair depiction of both sides and real poetry in the language.

Gettysburg covers the three day battle that is seen as deciding the war and concentrates on Robert E. Lee, James Longstreet and Joshua L. Chamberlin and his main company. A brilliant film full of tragedy and love.

5 out of 5 stars Great Series and Historically Accurate!.......2007-03-17

I loved this series. As a Civil War reenactor, and a history/education major, I have to say that these movies are awesome. I would also reccomend The Last Full Measure. The only thing I can find that is NOT historically correct off the top of my head is that in real life Lee asked for time to decide between his country and his state. I also wish that they had covered what actually happened at the Wilderness better. The Wilderness caught on fire, and the soldiers who were wounded, but not killed, burned to death. This is a part of the battle that was completely left out of the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Civil War Buffs.......2007-03-10

My son's and I have recently moved to North Carolina and have an interest in the Civil War. These 2 movies are excellently done. The visual and audio effects are both tasteful and artful. One of my son's was studying the Civil War in High School and he enjoyed the movies very much. I would recommend either of these movies to any one, not just Civil War enthusiasts! Pop some pop corn and enjoy these movies with the whole family. However, I would want to watch them first before allowing young viewers to watch them. They are war movies, afterall.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting Movie.......2007-01-31

The movie is very interesting. Saint Paul is a great Apostle. It is important to know about his life and his experience. I recommend the movie to any one who likes religious movies and anyone who wants to learn from the Saints experience. It gives detail about Saint Paul before he was converted, and it shows how he got converted, but it did not continue after he went to Rome. The movie ended right when he arrived in Rome. I think when he went to Rome, his life there was interesting experience, and it would be nice if there was second part. Overall, it is a good movie, and I think every one needs to view it.

5 out of 5 stars Paul the Apostle.......2007-01-11

The Best Movie I have seen in years!! Moves the heart, makes you know how real Jesus is. This is the kind of movie you watch over and over and over. 3.5 hours of intense interest, definetly NOT BORING! True to scripture.

1 out of 5 stars not like the Bible Collection in accuracy at all!.......2006-09-04

this video is nothing more than artistic license with the Scriptures. My family was amazed at how many points we found in the Scriptures that were DIFFERENT than what was said or acted out in this film. We REALLY enjoy other parts of the Bible Collection films, such as Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, David, Solomon, Jeremiah, and Esther. BUT THIS ONE doesn't deserve to be named off with the B.C. set (nor the Sampson one). If you want to see some common yet erroneous doctrines presented, then this film won't bother you. The only part that was continously Biblical was the tension between the political religious parties. All else was corrupted and shoved together incorrectly. Finally, the "artistic license" taken where you see Saul/Paul go from being a wrestler, to the full naked backside of the characters, to a single nude breast of a woman later as her and hubby go to consumate, and the buttocks hanging out of a few others along the way....well, it was embarassing to see such unholy material guized under a holy subject and Biblical atmosphere. Simply put, the story of Saul/Paul was "hollywood-ized" in this film....great liberty was taken, inappropriately. Don't buy if you want Biblical.

Every moment of your life is like a page in a Where’s Waldo book. God is there, the Scriptures tell us, but the ease with which he may be found varies from one page to the next. God is closer than you think!

4 out of 5 stars Good small group resource.......2007-05-15

Ortberg does it again! This is a good series for any small group. The video teaching is good and the production quality is high. It also works well in large group settings (church Sunday school, etc), which is the way I used it. I would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great study materials.......2006-03-16

The package was a complete one; book, study guide, PowerPoint, & video presentations. I read the book first, then proposed it to my church as a book study, which they enjoyed very well. John Ortberg is a good author and presenter of his materials, challenging common ideas about God with correct biblical ones.

      Product Description

Winner of 4 awards, this entertaining documentary tells the dramatic story behind the making of the epic movie Beowulf & Grendel, starring Gerard Butler, Stellan Skarsgard, Sarah Polley and Ingvar Sigurdsson. When Canadian director Sturla Gunnarsson and his cast and crew, including Gerard Butler and Stellan Skarsgård, set upon Iceland to film Beowulf & Grendel in 2004, they expected the usual complications involved in making a major motion picture. What they encountered was a ruthless Icelandic winter on a foreboding landscape, financing complications and a bizarre run of bad luck that led some of them to believe they were in an epic battle with the Norse gods themselves. Filmmaker Jon Gustafsson was along for the ride. Hired to play one of Beowulfs warriors, hes one set with his camera as the crew battles hurricane force winds and hes in the backroom as the producers scramble to shore up a collapsing deal, creating an intimate portrait of filmmakers fighting the odds in pursuit of a vision. 5 out of 5 stars The Burden of Sturla's Dream!.......2007-08-24

Many MANY years ago, being a dedicated Werner Herzog fan, I went to see the documentary, "Burden of Dreams" which was based on the many trials and tribulations of filming his incredible movie, "Fitzcarraldo" in the jungles of Peru. "Wrath of Gods" could be its Icelandic cousin. There seem to be certain films that fight against their creators. Their directors, crew, and cast must give all they have, and sometimes even a bit more, in order to see their dream realized. Indeed, there are moments during WOGs when the forced smile on director Sturla Gunnarsson's face melts into something sad and desperate; those are among the most beautiful moments in this film, because that sadness and desperation added to the haunting (and I mean that in the most lovely and primal way) beauty of what became "Beowulf & Grendel". There is no happy, storybook ending here; the film did poorly by Hollywood standards, but so what?! The film is ultimately true to the prose, true to the raging, frozen, breathtaking Icelandic landscape where it was filmed, and true to the tale of its anti-hero, Beowulf. It is almost an anti-Hollywood movie, and sometimes, who could ask for more than that? Thank you to the director of "Beowulf & Grendel", Sturla Gunnarsson, to Jon Gustafsson, who filmed its filming, and to the extraordinary cast. Absolutely loved this movie. It has SOUL.

Finally the world has the light switch turned on and Wrath is lighting the world on fire.

Got My Wrath DVD ---WOW just does not cover it

I came home to Wrath in my mailbox and I just finished watching it ----WOW!!! Awesome just does not begin to be the tip of the iceberg. Simply a masterpiece. Bravo Jon.

I loved the interview with Gerard, it is so raw and candid and shows alot of soul and gives us an inner glimpse of the many sides of Gerry. I like the part when he mentions how much Iceland means to him and how it has left such an impression on him, just like his homeland Scotland. For Gerry to make the interview while he had a raging headache says lot about him and his passion for Beowulf and Wrath.

Wrath is a must for everyone and you (Jon) must be so proud of your film because it is truly a work of art. It brought it all back for me when I was in Toronto for the World Premiere Of Beowulf and on the Red Carpet.

You go through so many different emotions in this film it is really a roller coaster ride that you hope will never end. It really gives the art of making movies a human touch and gives us all a bird's eye view of what can happen and what can go wrong. it is truly refreshing to get out of the "Hollywood" Mold and step into the real world. Just when you thought things could not get worse, they do and you wonder how everyone made it through filming alive.

So many extras that will leave you breathless and leave you in awe. I cannot believe the amount of extras included, it is amazing!!!

I am so happy Wrath is available in ALL REGIONS. It will become an instant treasure for you to watch again and again, except this treasure is not buried.

      Bravo Jon!!!!

I know many more awards are ahead for you and Wrath, you so deserve it.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting and helpful to understanding film........2007-08-22

Ihave always loved the story of beowulf. I was excited to see the movie when it came out, but by the end I was more interested in finding how they ever made the film. The documentary is wonderful. It lays out the reality of making movies and also about following your vision against great odds. The landscape, business, and unexpected pitfalls do not seem to sway people who are passionate about their art. I am so happy this film was made.

      5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Documentary.......2007-08-22

I was interested in BEOWULF AND GRENDEL for several reasons, first I'm a big Gerard Butler fan, second, I wanted to see how an updated film of the ancient epic poem would turn out and finally, I had been to Iceland and I wanted to see how it looked on film. Naturally, this documentary caught my eye and it did not disappoint. It was very interesting in just following the basic film making process. As a viewer, you are up close and personal with all the people working on the film, not just the cast and director. There was, of course, nothing basic in the making of this film. The weather was incredible, the backdrop of the Icelandic wilderness was breathtaking and the monumental difficulties that the filmmakers had to overcome was awesome. Though the weather and Mother Nature were by far the most dramatic problems, there were financial and business snafus to deal with as well. This documentary had a dramatic intensity of its own quite apart from the drama portrayed in the film. I unhesitatingly recommend this DVD to anyone who is interested in the process of filmmaking, as well as the beautiful landscape of the Icelandic coast and mountains.
