Description

A loose adaptation of the Marquis de Sade's The 120 Days of Sodom, Pier Paolo Pasolini's Salò is perhaps the most disturbing and disgusting film ever made. It is also one of the most important, offering a blistering critique of fascism and idealism that suggests moral redemption may be nothing but a myth. Criterion presents Salò in its uncut, uncensored version.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Reviled. Loved. Decide for yourself.......2007-08-04

This film is every bit as horrifying as its reputation suggests.

This film is nowhere near as graphic as its reputation suggests.

Watch it. Then, make up your mind.

2 out of 5 stars Good thing it was tame but,,,.......2007-06-19

sadism and perversion doesn't mean anything if the victims just don't react. For example If ANYone were to eat excement they WILL gag.But they Don't....This film couldn't really hold my attention at all.I couldn't believe in the film and i'm suprised at many of these reviews reading so many metaphors into it.Without reading up on the film (that is not being told what to read into it)I figured it was an indictment of facism and the cold callous cruely of the holocaust came to mind. But poignant metaphors throughout?-give me a break. And how can it be perverse or sadistic if the kids keep failing to mind?

5 out of 5 stars sound and picture quality is awful. buyers beware.......2007-04-24

I don't want to discuss about the movie. but the quality of the DVD was awfull. sound and picture both. picture quality was like that screener bootleg movies. criterion group unfortunately didn't do any restoration in this matter! and there is no special featues either. only movie perhaps direct from the original negavie and an english subtitle. that's all!

1 out of 5 stars Well..........2007-04-18

I saw this movie many years ago. I still cannot entirely rid myself of its memory.

It was the only time ever that I nearly threw up in the cinema (literally).

5 out of 5 stars This film had better not be forgotten!.......2007-04-05

This film, Salo, is based upon the novel "The 120 Days of Sodom" by the Marquis de Sade. This film is not an exploitation film, contrary to popular belief. This film is actually a work of art: a most PAINFUL work of art! It is about power wielded in the most abusive fashion. It is a story about four fascist libertines who kidnap sixteen children of both genders to indulge freely in every human depravity over a period of four months. Any act of humanity is punished in the most inhumane fashion imaginable, and obedience is the only social law behind the walls of the great mansion they hibernate in with their degraded human victims.

This film is important for two reasons; reason one, it reminds us of the depths of human cruelty we are all capable of. And two, it is a searing portrait of the fact that the garden of human delights is not always lighted with the virtues of human kindness and goodness; but rather illuminated by the depravities of the human expression of violence and rape as the means of absolute power and control over other fellow human beings, a most alarming fact of nature!!

The holocaust is not two steps behind us in human history, to forget our own evil is to allow it to persist. This film will hopefully remind us of the very real evil that lurks in the human subconsious, and given enough power and money, any of it can be acted out without threat of reproach or punishment. Watch this film, even if for no other reason than to Awake from the hopeless dream that keeps the common man blind from the tyrant's unbound twisted pleasure in the destruction of fellow human beings.
