5 out of 5 stars Esther Williams Volume 1.......2007-09-13

For any fan that loved watching her swim to wonderful music - and the light heartedness that went with her movies - the enjoyable cast, music, lighthearted storylines, and happy endings...this volume is for them!

3 out of 5 stars DANGEROUS WHEN WET OR DRY!.......2007-09-13

These DVDs have been beautifully transferred. The films are entertaining but it is appropriate to say at this late date that Esther Williams is a minor actress surrounded by wonderful talent and gorgeous production values. Despite her swimming prowess, she was the Britny Spears of her day.

4 out of 5 stars Not disappointed.......2007-09-01

I really liked Esther Williams when her movies came on the late late show when I was a kid...These movies to me don't disappoint...I hadn't seen the one which was her first movie called "Bathing Beauty" with Red Skeleton. I really liked it...They even had an interviewed her about her life.... The extras were good as well...Overall I was very pleased with my purchase.

Esther Williams is one of the best examples of what a woman is. She should be able to be physically able, great looks, and a good actress.

Although it was unfortunately ignored during its brief theatrical release, this sumptuously seductive production is that rarest of cinematic breeds, the (barely) respectable guilty pleasure. Combining historical fact with hysterical anachronisms of language and mannerism, it's been tailored for maximum contemporary appeal but maintains a lush, romantic feel for its factual 16th-century tale of Venetian love, lust, and political repression. Catherine McCormack (Mel Gibson's ill-fated bride in Braveheart) delivers a star-making performance as the "dangerous beauty" who becomes a skillful courtesan to pursue her forbidden love for a dashing Venetian senator (Rufus Sewell). It's all rather silly in a high-toned fashion, and the film turns dour when the church intervenes with a Scarlet Letter-like papal inquest. But the movie's joyously ribald vitality is utterly irresistible, and the casting of McCormack with Jaqueline Bisset (as her mother and courtesan mentor) is a stroke of pure genius. Merchant-Ivory would've made a smarter film from this material, but it probably wouldn't be nearly as entertaining. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best, most sensual movie I have ever seen.......2007-08-05

I love this movie, it is one of my top three favorite movies of all time. Catherine McCormack as Veronica Franco is totally credible as the envy of all Venetian courtesans and the love of many, many powerful men . I have seen Dangerous Beauty 14 times and I cry in the potent courtroom scene every single time. She is passionate, beautiful, brilliant, witty, playful and sensual. I thought her huge wardrobe of gowns were gorgeous. Rufus Sewell does an equally fabulous job as Marco and is the perfect match for Veronica. I own the soundtrack as well, it's mesmerizing.

5 out of 5 stars Romantic and Accurate.......2007-07-25

I first watched this movie in my university Italian Renaissance class, highlighting the importance and power women held as courtesans in Venice. Not only is this movie brilliantly acted, with gorgeous sets and costuming, but historically accurate. Veronica Franco (Catherine McCormack) indeed existed and was not only a prominent courtesan, but a published poet and influential political figure in Venice. The movie follows her transformation from a stubborn, free willed young woman with no dowry to a strong-minded provider for her family. The options facing Veronica are bleak--go to a convent, or provide income for the family as a courtesan. The movie dramatizes her relationship with the politically prominent Marco, whose contractual marriage for wealth fuels Veronica's desire to become a courtesan (as her ex-courtesan mother, portrayed by the brilliant Jaqueline Bisset, tells her "you can still have him"). Veronica becomes the most desired courtesan in Venice, and amasses political power as well as wealth, becoming a published author and a "national treasure".

The most unbelievable part of this movie, which the editorial review scoffs at above, is actually fact. Veronica Franco was persecuted by the Holy Inquisition, but was able to free herself from imprisonment, torture and death with the help of her clientele, the most influential men of Venice.

Katherine McCormack gives a flawless performance as the intelligent and beautiful Veronica Franco. Her somewhat less than worthy lover Marco is played by Rufus Sewell, who also does a solid job.

This is a great movie--daring romance, a strong willed charismatic heroine, and certainly worth having in your dvd collection.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2007-07-20

One of my all time favorite movies. If you like historical fiction, this is a must!

5 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2007-06-12

I orginally watched this movie on my computer through netflix and decided I loved the movie so much I needed to purchase it, which I did through Amazon. It took me several weeks to actually watch the movie as I would constantly browse by the movie, read what it was about and then move on. Finally I decided to watch the movie and was pleasantly surprised. What I watched was not what I expected to see. The movie not only caught my attention from the beginning but kept it through the end. I experienced several emotions while watching it and would recommend it to anyone and in fact have recommended it to several people already. This is the type of movie that even if you don't understand everything that is said, as there are several parts in which they speak slightly like Shakespear, you still understand the meaning/emotions which are being portrayed. Catherine McCormack definately out did herself in this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific.......2007-06-08

Don't let the title and DVD cover fool you into thinking it's a fluff film. It's a much better film than what's implied. Good acting and absorbing story.

They call it Giant because everything in this picture is big, from the generous running time (more than 200 minutes) to the sprawling ranch location (a horizon-to-horizon plain with a lonely, modest mansion dropped in the middle) to the high-powered stars. Stocky Rock Hudson stars as the confident, stubborn young ranch baron Bick Benedict, who woos and wins the hand of Southern belle Elizabeth Taylor, a seemingly demure young beauty who proves to be Hudson's match after she settles into the family homestead. For many the film is chiefly remembered for James Dean's final performance, as poor former ranch hand Jett Rink, who strikes oil and transforms himself into a flamboyant millionaire playboy. Director George Stevens won his second Oscar for this ambitious, grandly realized (if sometimes slow moving) epic of the changing socioeconomic (and physical) landscape of modern Texas, based on Edna Ferber's bestselling novel. The talented supporting cast includes Mercedes McCambridge as Bick's frustrated sister, put out by the new "woman of the house"; Chill Wills as the Benedicts' garrulous rancher neighbor; Carroll Baker and Dennis Hopper as the Benedicts' rebellious children; and Earl Holliman and Sal Mineo as dedicated ranch hands. --Sean Axmaker

Description

Texan rancher Bick Benedict visits a Maryland farm to buy a prize horse. Whilst there he meets and falls in love with the owner's daughter Leslie, they are married immediately and return to his ranch. The story of their family and its rivalry with cowboy and (later oil tycoon) Jett Rink unfolds across two generations.

This is an excellent movie for the entire family. It touches issues of racism, feminism, class and family dynamics. Visually great!

5 out of 5 stars How Little The World Changes.......2007-07-19

I have seen the movie "Giant" three times now and am always surprised at how well it holds up each time I see it. Although it is almost three hours and a half in length, the time passes quickly. Based on Edna Ferber's novel by the same name and directed by George Stevens who won the 1956 Oscar as best director, the film, set in the first half of this century covers two generations of Texans: rancher Bick Benedict (Rock Hudson), his feisty wife Leslie (Elizabeth Taylor), and their children played by Carol Baker and Dennis Hopper. We should not forget James Dean as Jeff Rink in this his great but final role before his death at 23. Mercedes McCambridge also plays Bick's no-nonsense sister Luz and a very young Sal Mineo plays Angel, the Mexican worker at Bick's ranch, the Reata, who goes off to fight in World War II.

Everything about this film is big: its length, the landscape-- much of it beautifully photographed-- and certainly stars with the physical attractiveness of Taylor, Hudson and Dean are bigger than we, the sublunaries. The plot is both grand and straightforward. Bick falls in love with Leslie at first sight, takes her from her home in Maryland-- where he has gone to buy a horse from her father-- to his huge spead in Texas. There she struggles with male attitudes towards both women and children-- husbands should be lord of their castles and the owners of both their wives and children-- as well as the prevailing racism lodged at Mexicans and Mexican Americans. For my money, Rock Hudson is a far better actor than critics usually are willing to admit. Elizabeth Taylor of course plays the Southern belle role, the steel magnolia, that she repeated again and again until she finally almost because a caricature. James Dean makes us wonder about what kind of great actor he would have become, had he lived.

Two things always stand out when I watch this movie. One will make you smile; the second will make you sad. The characters in this film essentially grow old by having their hair died grey. We know what Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor looked like as they aged; they did not look like Bick and Leslie with grown children. The second-- the racism towards Latinos. It is so raw and jarring in the film, but sad to say, too many Latinos, particularly Mexicans and Mexican Americans are still treated badly. While the movie's treatment of racism must have been much ahead of its time when it was released in 1956, unfortunately the film's message is still all too relevant today.

"Giant" made the list of 100 best movies published by the American Film Institute in 2000. It really is a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Very grand spectactle.......2007-06-29

The title Giant captures much about the movie - Giant personalities portrayed by Giant actors in a Giant sized state, shown on a Giant movie. This is a multigenerational story of the adoption of Texas by rancher-oilmen. Hollywood's best (Elizabeth Taylor at an age my generation won't recognize, and Dennis Hopper in a surprise smaller role) play in this story that confronts big topics such as inter-generational transfer, racism, and faulty attempts at personal growth.

It's a heavy and long movie - best seen in 3 parts over 3 nights. As such, it can be appreciated as a masterpiece. In one night it might be too much.

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Giant.......2007-06-25

Based on Edna Ferber's best-seller, Stevens's vibrant, sprawling epic about a rivalry that spans decades is every bit as grandiose, melodramatic, and visually arresting as it was half a century ago. In his final performance, Dean really hits the mark, playing the noxiously racist Jett Rink--a surly cowboy who inherits oil-rich land and establishes himself as Bick's nemesis--with smoldering angst. Hudson and Taylor offer some of their finest screenwork, too, making their often turbulent marital conflicts (especially over Mexican-American workers' rights) equal to the grand majesty of the Lone Star landscape. Fascinating and unforgettable, "Giant" truly is larger than life.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Dean, Deals with Important Issues.......2007-06-22

Notably, this film highlights issues that were controversial at that time, including respect/equal rights for women and minorities. Acting is excellent. James Dean was on a roll with this film, his last, although he seems to play pretty much the same character in all three of his movies. Deserves to be a classic.

This is the movie that was supposed to make Jim Carrey a star--in 1985, no less. Perhaps it's no wonder that it took him until the 1990s (and In Living Color): this bloodless vampire comedy almost sank his movie career before it began. Carrey plays an innocent L.A. teen, the unlikely object of the affections of slinky Lauren Hutton, a long-lived vampire who needs the blood of a virgin to stay young. So, she woos the unsuspecting, naive young Valley guy. But most of the jokes fall flat, and only when Carrey cuts loose briefly and lets his wild side show do we get a glimpse of the future Ace Ventura. --Marshall Fine

4 out of 5 stars Low Budget Laugh Riot! Vampires Beware............2007-01-30

This movie about a shy L.A. highschool student who ran afoul of a centuries old vampire is a laugh riot (even if it's for all the wrong reasons!).

Quick Synopsis: Jim Carrey stars as a typical L.A. teenager who is growing a little restless to lose his virginity to his high school sweetheart. What he doesn't know is that a local vampire (Lauren Hutton) is struggling to find the innocent blood of a virgin, and has set her sights on him! In order to maintain her youthful appearance, she must drink the blood of a virgin (the same virgin) 3 times before midnight on Halloween. If she succeeds, her victim becomes a vampire in her service forever!

"Once Bitten" is a comedy that saw the budding young career of Jim Carrey, an actor who would eventually rise to the upper tier of Hollywood, but who was at the time just an innocent young actor in a C rate movie in the 1980's. I think part of what makes this movie so appealing was the fact that looking back on it, one could laugh their butts off at the bad writing, terrible acting, and downright hilarious 80's vibe the entire movie has. Want to see bright florescent neon lights? How about some pretty bad fashion choices? This movie will give you one heck of a blast from the past!

I would describe this film as one of those deliciously guilty pleasures that you watch and enjoy even though you know it's a terrible movie by all standards. I find it incredibly fascinating to watch Jim Carrey in one of his first films, and be able to see that he truly had some raw talent back then...(very raw talent. It took another decade or so for him to hone his skills and improve). However, even in the mid-1980's he had that incredibly expressive face, and a natural talent for humorous body language. He's just a lot of fun to watch!

I'm not going to lie...this movie is so bad that it's good!

2 out of 5 stars Twice Shy.......2006-07-29

Some reviewers who've given this many stars have mentioned the beautiful Lauren Hutton. She's beautiful. But, you don't see much of her, this is after-all only a PG-13 release. There's no real sex in this.

This film is, after-all one of a few vampire teen-comedies of the era ("I was a Teenage Vampire", "Teen Vamp", "Vamp", "Fright Night" etc - of which the last two are infinitely more enjoyable).

The sexy Lauren Hutton needs to feed off a virgin. She doesn't seem very adept at doing so!

5 out of 5 stars Once bitten not twice shy.......2006-02-23

Two sexy woman fighting over one dork... All my dreams come true if i were Mark that is. This movie somwhat touch base on how "virgins" feel now days... And well basicly it throws in a whole heap of comedy.

3 out of 5 stars Classic 80's Flick.......2006-02-06

Watch this flick for one reason... To see Jim Carrey dance! It's classic!

5 out of 5 stars JIM DID A GREAT JOB IN THIS MOVIE VERY FUNNY!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-20

Description

Giant is a movie of huge scale and grandeur in which three generations of land-rich Texans love, swagger, connive and clash in a saga of family strife, racial bigotry and conflict between cattle barons and newly rich oil tycoons. It's also one of the most beloved works of director George Stevens, who won an Academy AwardO* for this film, one of 10 Oscar nominations** the film earned.

Description

Frank Zito (a career performance by co-writer/co-executive producer Joe Spinell of ROCKY and THE GODFATHER fame) is a deeply disturbed man, haunted by the traumas of unspeakable childhood abuse. And when these horrific memories begin to scream inside his mind, Frank prowls the seedy streets of New York City to stalk and slaughter innocent young women. Now Frank has begun a relationship with a beautiful photographer ( Caroline Munro of THE SPY WHO LOVED ME), yet his vile compulsions remain. These are the atrocities of a human monster. This is the story of a MANIAC.

Experience MANIAC like you've never seen or heard it before. Directed by William Lustig (MANIAC COP, VIGILANTE) and featuring landmark gore effects by Tom Savini (DAWN OF THE DEAD, FRIDAY THE 13th), this notorious classic was censored all over the world for its graphic violence and remains banned in England and Germany to this day. But MANIAC is more than just one of the most relentlessly depraved films of our time; it is quite possibly one of the most disturbing horror movies ever made.

5 out of 5 stars Disturbing piece of cinema.......2007-08-05

Believe it or not but I found this film to be one of the greatest horror films ever made , definitely one of the best slasher films. In this film there definitely was a motive to the killings. I didn't really just see this as only a slasher film but as an insight into the life of a killer. Really like Henry: Portrait of A Serial Killer. Both films were really just observations of the human condition or the soul. Observations on what drives these men into their own mad worlds. I also thought that both treated the killer as a real character. A real person with serious problems. Even though the killer was this terrible bad guy, I felt bad for him because inside of him he was only a child. A child who was hurt and abused by his mother. Again like HENRY. I'd say that this film is as much of a horror film as it is a drama. I also have to say that Jay Chattaway's score for this film was brilliant, probably one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. 10/10

5 out of 5 stars sicko movie.......2007-07-15

I don't have this movie, but I remember it very well. I was 18 years old when the movie first came out, and I went to a movie theater to see it by myself, and when it was over with, I went outside and stood in front of the theater waiting for my ride back home, and I couldn't stop shaking, and the lady in the box office kept looking at me, she must have noticed me shaking. IT wasn't winter time, but spring or summer, yet I was shaking very much. Even though I'm now 44 years old, I don't think I would care to see it again. It was the first slasher movie for me at that time, and seeing women getting scalped especilly bothered me. I rate it a 5 for scaring me like it did, and for how real it looked to me back then. If I were to watch it again now, it would be just to see how I could take it now, but I wouldn't let my two children watch it that's for sure, and I wouldn't want my wife to watch it either.

1 out of 5 stars Just a simple question??.......2007-06-12

Why do people even watch this trash? If nobody watched this crap, Hollywood WOULD get the message [money always talks!} and stop producing such drivel for the "dim bulbs" among us!! And you want to know WHY we have so many violent serial killers--well they have plenty to emulate!!

5 out of 5 stars MASTERPIECE!!.......2007-06-03

Joe Spinell was brilliant in this brilliant film. The plot is amazing and the entire time youre hooked on your seat. The mannequin idea is so perfectly creepy and the gore effects by Tom Savini are brutally delisciuos and what you expect from the master of splatter. The famous shotgun scene is probably still one of the best goriest scenes ever! "Maniac" is definitely a MUST for every horror movie fan..A MUST!!

4 out of 5 stars This guy might have some issues.......2007-05-20

A little blood goes a long way. A lotta blood can leave emotional scars on a timid viewer who has a low gore tolerance level. I don't know if that makes any sense but if you're going to the blood bank, you can cash in with Maniac.
This movie is classic. It's bloody brilliant. Some kid gets mistreated by his mom and grows up to terrorize women everywhere.
What makes this movie suspenseful is the superb level of realism. This sicko has a grudge against women but actually is probably craving that motherly nurturing spirit that was neglected to him.
This is one hell of a horror movie. The murders are brutal. Ahhhh yes, good wholesome fun for you adults. Put the kids to bed first though.
