Music and Lyrics is frothy and sweet, like the top of a perfect cappuccino shared a deux. Hugh Grant is a self-professed "happy has-been," playing his befuddled, adorable persona more spot-on than he has since Four Weddings and a Funeral. As Alex, former member of an '80s pop band who years later is playing at water parks and high school reunions, he's settled into a life of lesser expectations. Drew Barrymore, quietly radiant, is Sophie, the underachieving girl Friday who arrives to water--make that overwater--Alex's plants--and to explode him out of that comfy rut. If the plot's a bit farfetched, it matters not, since the two lead characters are so likable--and make such beautiful music together. Big bonus: the supportive role of Kristen Johnston as Rhonda, Sophie's older sis (and longtime Alex fan) whose hilarious performance threatens to steal the show whenever she's onscreen. (The owner of a chain of successful weight-loss centers, Rhonda tries to comfort a rattled Sophie: "Want to do some stress eating?") The film also marks the remarkable debut of Haley Bennett, who plays a pop star of Britney/Cristina proportions with deadpan sincerity radiating through her skimpy outfits and mega-extensions. As Alex and Sophie work on crafting musical magic, something else is taking hold. It's music to the ears of anyone needing a sweet romantic comedy that hits all the right notes. --A.T. Hurley

Description

First you're hot, then you're not...and then you're Alex Fletcher (HUGH GRANT). So when the sizzlingest tween-queen on the charts asks the has-been '80s pop sensation to write her a song, he grabs for another chance at stardom. Problem: Alex can say it with music, but he sure can't say it with words. Enter Sophie Fisher (DREW BARRYMORE), his beguiling if quirky plant lady, who has a green thumb for lyrics. Together, they go after songwriting success -- and discover that if you want to write the perfect love song, it helps to fall in love. With Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore at the keyboard and Marc Lawrence (Two Weeks Notice) directing, Music and Lyrics is a witty, wacky romantic comedy that faces the music...and laughs!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars An average romantic comedy that has its moments........2007-09-13

The on-screen chemistry of Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore is so tangible that it nearly carries the movie. Their performances are laid back, believable, and engaging, but the dialogue ranges from trite and cliched to clever, insightful, and damn near hysterical at times. That makes it more distracting than anything else in this romantic comedy that reminds one of a really good episode of the classic ABC-TV series "Love Boat" (circa 1970's). I can't stand uneven films and this film comes real close to that with its dialogue.

The supporting cast is wonderful and Amazon's assessment of them in their review is, as they say, "spot on." They all interact well, and, at times, outshine the main actors. The director of the film does nothing inspiring at all and comes across as a TV directior making his or her major motion picture debut. It could have been worse, but more importantly, it could have been so much better.

The film goes down easy enough, but it is a disappointment. It is worth a viewing and is a rather pleasant experience overall, but nothing noteworthy or even very memorable.

4 out of 5 stars Just plain fun.......2007-09-07

Not usually a great fan of romantic comedies, but I actually watched this one twice on the same rental -- mostly because I wanted to figure out why I enjoyed it so much more than others of its genre. The verdict: 1)both lead characters are so vulnerable and endearing, and 2)everyone's just having so much FUN -- the songwriters, the concert-goers, the sister (what a kick!!) and most of all me. Sure it's formula, but so what -- it made me chuckle a little, smile a lot, and remember that even when it seems like the best part of life is behind you, there still may be a surprise or two in store. This one'll never change the world, but it sure helped brighten my evening.

3 out of 5 stars Music and Lyrics Rates a Solid 3.5.......2007-09-02

Music and Lyrics, starring Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore, is a decent romantic comedy with some very amusing scenes. As a product of 80's music, the obvious Wham bits, from silly videos to Grant playing the Andrew Ridgley part of a successful duo, was hilarious. Watching the movie, I was concerned initially about the chemistry between Grant and Barrymore, who have both been great with other supporting actors. They had a very smooth chemistry on the screen. Grant steals the show here with his acting and singing. The movie is somewhere in the middle of three and four stars, so I give it a solid 3.5 star rating. Not a bad way to spend an hour and a half.

As a side note, Hugh Grant does all of his own singing in the movie.

4 out of 5 stars Hugh Grant elevates this amusing trifle!.......2007-09-01

I almost think I could watch Hugh Grant do just about anything and be amused. His deadpan, fluttery-eyed delivery seems to hit my funny-bone just right. In well-written work like 4 WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL or the sadly overlooked ABOUT A BOYAbout a Boy (Widescreen Edition)...Grant is a mega-star. He is an actor of seemingly limited range...yet the work he can do within that range is astounding. He seems to have a dial that says "CAD" and he can turn it up or down as need-be. In BRIDGET JONES...he dials it up. In MUSIC & LYRICS...it's dialed pretty far down. He's a charming looser, seemingly happy to lead the life of a has-been pop star from the '80s. He entertains for high-school reunions and at amusement parks with professional enthusiasm...but no real drive. He lives comfortably in a gorgeous Manhatten apartment...and doesn't seem to care to be creative or relevant again.

Then an unusual opportunity to write a song for the leading pop-diva of her day (think Christina by way of Britney) AND to perform on the recording gives him a late life chance to become "famous" again. But he needs a songwriter.

Through a series of mild but unlikely events, he teams up with Drew Barrymore...who is a cute, funny presence as always...but frankly, her fast-talking, ditzy persona is wearing thin. She's no little kid anymore, nor is she even a young lady. She's a mature woman who needs to grow up...much like Hugh Grant's characters always need to! I enjoyed her...but the odd-pairing of Grant and Barrymore isn't as sparkling as another pairing with Grant might have been. Perhaps someone as witty...not just quirky.

Anyway, this is a pretty minor quibble, because the film belongs to Grant. From the absolutely brilliant, spot-on video that starts the film (Grant in '80s attire in an old video for his group's song "Pop Goes My Heart") to all his mumbled asides...Grant is just so much fun to watch and listen to. I chuckled throughout the movie. Even though Grant is truly coasting a bit in this film...his charm still oozes. I mean that in a good way!

Kristen Johnson has a small role as Barrymore's sister, and she's an over-the-top delight. Big, noisy, passionate, funny, sexy and very much THERE...it's time she had a bigger role sometime. I kept imagining a pairing of some sort between her and Grant...talk about opposites!!

The film takes lots of easy buy amusing jibes at the current state of the music business...particulary in the way the young pop star embraces religions and cultures in a totally non-understanding way. She is blithely unaware that having a giant buddha (from which she emerges in almost no clothing) as the kick-off to her concert is hugely offensive. These scenes are like something out of SPINAL TAP.

You could certainly do far worse than spending 100 minutes with Grant and his co-stars. The film is a triffle, but it is amusing, occasionally truly clever and as far as my wife and I are concerned, the opening video is worth the price of admission!

Not really for little kids, because there isn't really any slapstick or real physical comedy. It's a film packed full of dialogue...a treat of adults looking for a safe, fun diversion.

4 out of 5 stars worth watching!.......2007-09-01

One of my favorite pieces of dialogue from this film is when Hugh/Alex tells Drew/Sophie that she can keep the view of her smug ex-boyfriend--a best-selling writer of novels--that literary authors are superior to pop song writers. He follows up those words with a memorable statement by saying that such music greats as The Temptations, Smokey Robinson, Bob Dylan and The Beatles are the TRUE poets, the true brilliant writers.

"I've got sunshine on a cloudy day. When it's cold outside, I got the month of May....now that's real poetry", Grant says.

There are other great scenes to this movie, all wrapped up in a supposedly run-of-the-mill chick flick. But I say that this romantic comedy has much more to it than any of the critics will be able to see.

There's little doubt that this two-volume concert and documentary package will appeal to die-hard Metallica lovers--given its more than three-hour length (two and a half for the concert segment alone), the band's predominantly white male fan base (repeatedly addressed as "man" by singer-guitarist James Hetfield) will be--in fact already are--ecstatic. But one wonders, especially given the erratic history of rock-cum-orchestra experiments, whether S&M will win Metallica any new aficionados. The fact is that the presence of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, conducted by composer Michael Kamen, adds texture but not much else of significance to the Metallica sound. The band is so loud that it tends to overwhelm even a 100-plus member orchestra; what's more, Metallica's crunching, fist-pumping, riff-laden metal music lends itself less to genuine orchestral adornment than to superfluous bombast. And while the sound quality is excellent, it's still basically just a filmed concert, with little in the way of additional visual interest. Still, there are some cool moments, and all involved are clearly having a great time. There are also two new Metallica songs, "No Leaf Clover" and "Minus Human." (Note: also available is an edited version, sold at a slightly lower price, which corresponds to the popular PBS broadcast. The longer version carries an explicit content advisory label, due to much casual profanity, especially in the "making of" documentary.) --Sam Graham

Description

Metallica, never resting, never ceasing to innovate or amaze, returns with an extraordinary document of their concert with the San Francisco Symphony. Metallica's select favorites unfold like never before with the eloquent symphonic backing; they have never sounded more powerful or dramatic. The performance includes two new songs--"No Leaf Clover" and "Human."

5 out of 5 stars An incredible concert.......2007-09-10

This concert was breathtaking. It was a flawless performance of the best combination of metal music and an orchestra that I had ever heard. The music was written so well that you would have thought that they originally composed the music this way, rather than rewritten it for this concert. It sounded so good that I have the double set of cds as well. I hope that they do this again with their other music. It gives it a whole new dimension.

I highly recommend this to not only Metallica fans but to fans of orchestra music as well. It will definitely broaden your horizons.

5 out of 5 stars Metalli-tastic!!.......2007-05-26

This is the best concert DVD I have ever seen by far. It is of amazing sound and visual quality with many extra features. The documentary on the making of S&M is very interesting and cool to watch. If you love Metallica as much as I do, then you'll love this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Metallica Delivers -- S&M does not disappoint!.......2007-02-19

Not being a huge Metallica fan I wasn't sure what I would get with this DVD. Obviously I enjoy enough of their music to take a chance on this. Hey the concept of a head banger band combined with a symphony was very intriguing. And it delivered far more than I ever imagined. Having played in a symphony for 5 years during my school days -- I was more than a little concerned about the symphony's arrangement and hoped that Metallica wouldnt just drown them out. Michael Kamen (or whomever) was masterful in blending the symphony together with the metal to provide a very robust and rich sound. And the band doesnt overpower the symphony at all. As a metal head banger I was also worried that they would produce a milk toast or watered down version of Metallica -- again no worries mate! Metallica sounds great and the symphony adds an amazing texture to them. The DVD visually is very well done -- cameras transition from musician to musician and angle to angle in a coheisive fashion so that the viewer feels like part of the performance or at least being part of the front row. All parties appear to be enjoying themselves tremendously - which makes viewing the DVD even more fun. If you like Metallica you wont be disappointed and if you're just a casual fan but love music you'll enjoy this one too.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD!.......2007-01-16

I bought this DVD for my boyfriend for Christmas and he asbsolutely loves it! It has fantastic sound quality and it is very impressive to watch the orchestra play in the background. Perfect gift for any Metallica lovers!

At the heart of this dynamic film is the love of a man for a woman, a mother for a son, and a brother for a brother. Rarely is one man's struggle for inner peace so poignantly displayed as in this engrossingly sexy and unflinchingly violent love story. Lyric is the young woman who rekindles the dreams of a man tormented by a father's alcoholic violence now perpetuated by an unstable brother. Allen Payne and Jada Pinkett make for one of the screen's most memorable duos in the title roles. Each brings emotional intensity paired with powerful sexuality to their roles. Director Doug McHenry speaks to the 1990s by deftly balancing the story's heightened drama with just enough hope to give it impact. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Description

From one of the producers of New Jack City comes a "sizzling hot" (Glamour Magazine) Romeo and Juliet drama that blends an explosive soundtrack with an all-star cast, including Allen Payne (The Walking Dead), Jada Pinkett (The Nutty Professor), Bokeem Woodbine (The Rock), Forest Whitaker (The Crying Game) and Naughty By Nature's Anthony "Treach" Criss (Who's The Man?). Jason and Joshua are two brothers left fatherless by a family fight that spun out of control. Trying to make good and get off the slick ghetto streets of Houston, Jason (Payne) finds a source of inspiration in a beautiful and sexy girl named Lyric (Pinkett), whose dreams of fleeing the city together give him hope for a better life. But when Joshua (Woodbine) turns to a life of crime and drugs, Jason finds he's torn between his love for Lyric and his obligation to family. And as the time comes for Jason to leave, he finds that Joshua will stop at nothing to see that he stays even if the fight to keep him rivals the one that killed their father!

I remember being in high school (Da Ridge...Eagles baby!) when this movie came out in 1994. I remember thinking how cool that a movie like this would be filmed in my own city versus LA or NY. Many of the scenes in the movie were filmed in the most popular areas, especially those known as hot tourist locations. The movie depicts life in the roughest parts of town and how it can harden a person including families. But the two lovers in this movie dream about and desperately want a better life for themselves, therefore they take their destiny into their own hands in this courageous movie. Ya gotta' get this DVD and the soundtrack too...I love them both!

Jason's Lyric, just one of many movies to put H-town on the map! The restaurant that Jada Smith works at is called "This Is It". Definitely one of the best soul food restaurants in Houston...check it out next time you're in town.

5 out of 5 stars HONEYCOMB.......2006-07-20

As I watched the DVD, I did seeking for an answer to something that this movie had stirred in me. To my amazement it surfaced in me that this movie centered around pure, innocent, mind probing, and heart phased LOVE. In other words, UNCONDITIONAL LOVE. Yet even though it appread in an ordinary way it was demonstrated in an extraordinary style. Jason, having to face the lost of his father by his own hands, had to come to terms with the fact that he killed his father but not for evil but to protect his mother. In all respect, JASON wanted to be the GOOD SON. Not hurting but helping. As a result, he had to choose between the woman he loved and the brother he wanted to protect. This woman, whom he had only known for a very short time but yet they had shared something so intimate and so soul connecting, that he found himself locked in something so deep that he could not give up; even at the cost of his brother. Even after all of the disappointments, he still came to the conclusion that this woman was the key for him. She was not perfect but she held his attention, which later led to her holding his heart. Even in the intimate scenes, I did not get offended but yet, I saw a man, who needed to know he was approved being certified in the arms a woman. He needed to know that even though he had committed a bad act (killing his father), that he was still a good person. This woman helped him to embrace that and strengthen him to a level where he could move foward and reach for GOD'S BEST. I titled my review HONEYCOMB because as bitter as the events in Jason's life was God sent him a sweet taste of victory (Lyric).

3 out of 5 stars Simple Story, but in excellence of mannerism.......2005-08-23

Jason's Lyric, a story about an astute poet who exaggurates about leaving the 'Ghetto Hood' of Los Angeles, CA finds it worth while when meeting a troubled individual with a shocking past. The two fall in love but first must overcome obstacles in their own lives. Jada Pinkett and Allen Payne provide decent preformance and make the movie worthy of watching and understanding the story. Unlike the stupidity of the storytellers basing a movie in the deprived areas of America, this movie shows the obvious human side to the characters and gets you attached to them even more.

Although the ending of the movie was an enigma in itself, the story was adequate in most areas and tied the lives of the characters together to bring one of the passable plots of the 90s.

5 out of 5 stars metallica:year and half parts 1 & 2.......2007-07-25

I love this dvd because it shows you what it is like to be a heavy metal rock star from the recording an album to being on the road (the good and bad )and meeting and dealing with other band members bad behavior eg Axl rose. You come out of watching the dvd feeling like you have been to some amazing concerts and travelled the world with your best friends Jason, James, Lars and Kirk.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Metallica. Better than some kind of monster........2007-01-06

Two documentaries one making the album, the other touring it, just as they were becoming the biggest metal band in the world. If you like Metallica you'll love this.

5 out of 5 stars best music video ever.......2006-10-10

all the reviews point to "some kind of monster". good, but cant hold a candle to this. the making of, and tour of, one of the greatest albums ever. i'm not going to go on, just see it and feel it. hell you even have Spinal Tap jump in on vol.2 in regards to the "Black Album". Newsted's last great hurrah.

5 out of 5 stars A must for any Metallica Fan.......2006-08-29

This DVD is a must for any true Metallica fan it rock's from start to finish!!!

4 out of 5 stars Metallica Early On .......2005-08-05

Being a Metallica fan, I did rather enjoy this trinket of Metal Music History. The early 90's proved to be a crucial time for Metallica as documented in this movie. The turning point of Metallica's "Black Album" and the touring that followed helped the band to procure a seat (the number one seat) on the Rock/Metal charts.

Watching the production/recording of the album, the marriage of sonic producer Bob Rock helping out, and a bunch of roudy 20-something world-class rockers is pure entertainment. Their haughty self-importance is hard to take at times (see Lars), but definitely sheer entertainment. The live footage of the band across world venues is worth the price alone. It shows how much of a live band they really are. Also included are their videos from the album, which are nice to have sprinkled into the mix of the movie.

Although this movie is nothing to Some Kind Of Monster (their latest movie), it shows the old Metallica that grew right into the reputation of Alcoholica, women, drugs, touring, rock-n-roll life on the road extraordinaire. It is interesting to see them back then, the organic beginnings of the biggest Metal band of all time. During this movie they are poised to claim that throne, and don't even know it yet.

Very interesting to watch, just don't let your kids watch--not only will they see nudity/etc., they might get some crazy idea of becoming a rockstar.

1 out of 5 stars Embarrassing.......2007-03-27

Metallica is great, this product displays them at their near worst. Pandering to the crowd, playing with the lights on for the first few songs, asking if the crowd wants "heavy". Give me a break. Metallica never needed to do anything but go up on stage and crank the stuff out, so why they resorted to these tactics I don't know. Other than they are playing to the cameras, which every band does, but this is a little out of character. I don't understand the glowing reviews here. I frankly feel the audience got shortchanged and didn't experience a true Metalli-show where it's all black, all music, all fist pumping, all the time. And the stupid camera-angle-change feature of my DVD didn't work. More marketing to the masses I suppose.

2 out of 5 stars What a cunning stunt you dudes pulled on us .......2007-01-04

What is WITH you people w the glowing reviews?????

Do you even HAVE a killer sound system?

Do you all play your DVD's through TV speakers??

Do any of you even have headphones worth more than $50?

First off, I am a fan, been to 4 shows over 20 years. I even saw them play off the back of a flat bed truck in the Tower Records parking lot just before the Load tour. It was right after they all cut their hair, it was a trippy site.

Anyway, you can't even turn this thing up all the way without it giving reverb and making the speakers crackle. Its ok about 2/3's up, but you should be able to jam a DVD all the way up and rattle the windows when you want and have the sound be clean and clear. Yes I tried it at a couple other friends houses, with nice stereos, same thing.

Another bone to pick is the camera's are jumping all over with the shots, must be no more than 5 seconds on each member, then to the next, then to the next, over and over and OVER! Somebody start a school up for these guys! It's in so many DVDs!! We don't like that stop it! It's like they think the average fan is 14-17, short attention span.

Fade to black, I love the guitars, not the subject matter, but the guitars on the song, just flat jams, but not here, it just falls flat like the rest of the show. And what really stupid is this is not on S and M DVD with the symphony, that would have been the best song on the DVD! With the violins flying away with the guitars. Flat blew that one dudes. Maybe is wasn't picked for that show because of the lyrics, if so then ok, but if not, then glaring omission.

Lars, sits right in the middle like he is on some throne and has a lot of the lights on him making him stand out, no doubt he has it set up this way, and lots of camera shots of him, no doubt he has this set up this way also, since he is a known control freak. Dude is a good drummer but he isn't no John Bonham or Neil Peart. He thinks everyone is at the show to see him as much as James and Kirk. No Lars, we are not.

And the worst part of this whole DVD is the drums are turned up WAY to high, they actually dominate the show and just about over power the guitars. NO DOUBT LARS has it set up this way. I have seen him talk allot, with out a doubt one of the biggest ego maniac napoleon complex dudes I have ever seen.

You should be able to type " napoleon complex rockers" into google and have his name and pic come up on the first page.

Lars doesn't even respect James and who he is to the band, and that people are there to always see the singer and guitarist, and every show, more than anyone, not the drummer. Not at any show. Can you name a rock band where most of everyone in attendance at the show to see the drummer? Not even Rush or Led Zeppelin, 2 of the best overall bands of all time. sure some people are there to see Bonham and Peart mainly, but not the far majority. Men come to see the guitarist and Women come to see the singer. That's just nature. That's why bands with both of them that are good are at the top. You don't even have to get along, its all about the money anyway. It's a job. And ever notice James once during each show comes over to the drums and He and Lars give each other a quick smile? That's not because they life each other, in this band even your average fan knows they don't, so why do they?

Because that's the moment of the show when they both go "Ca Ching!" another night of work, another deposit into the bank.

If you don't agree with me then you're a blinded fool. And nothing wrong with them doing it, who doesn't want to just play music for there lives and get paid millions?

That's the dream of everyone, you that is reading this also, don't lie. so no envy here. More power to ya guys! Just get it together and put out better stuff than this, take better pride in your work released dudes. Your so hands on Lars with everything, so this release in all of its problems is your fault. Thanks for ripping me off.

Summation: its bad enough you wasted $25 then had to resale it for $15, in mint condition played a few times, no the worst part is as a fan I don't get to put it on and let it play while we clean house with it going all over the house and pool parties, going out to the backyard, etc. That's one of the cool reasons I keep DVD's on concert that are good, and there are not many that are good. You can't only "watch" a concert so many times, but you can always listen plenty. And when you can't do either with a DVD, that's a flat rip off joke from a band.

I give it two stars because they have closed captioned on this dvd, other than that, one star for the overall of everything I have said.

This piece of Sh** DVD is Binged & Purged.

What a cunning stunt you dudes pulled on us.

And I bet that title is part of the "Ca Ching" deal also.

As in, Buy this dvd, so they can say it again.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2006-04-21

I watched this dvd before Metallica came to South Africa to see what I was in for. It rocked, and they basically played the same set here in the RSA. It was all fun and games at the concert until a lion came and tried to attack James Hetfield on stage. No actually, the lions are locked up in cages here you idiots! Cunning Stunts is an awesome dvd. Get it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent home video.......2006-02-08

I seen these guys twice on this tour so watching the video brings it all back to me. I was confused about the title also, but someone explained that it is a play on words. Instead of Cunning Stunts, they are really saying, Stunning C**nts. Too bad this isn't on DVD!

5 out of 5 stars "Metallica Rocks".......2006-01-27

This band is fully charged when it comes to live performance and will definetely pump-up that adrenaline rush through your head. Their ability of creating a unique sound makes you seem to crave for more and more "Metallica". Truly and worthy of being called one of the best band in "Music History".

--A.T. Hurley

5 out of 5 stars Filmed in my hometown...Houston, TX!.......2007-03-11

The purchase was received in a well manner. I would buy from this marketplace again.
