Maybe it doesn't quite live up to its sterling reputation, and maybe the leading man and director were slightly miscast. But who cares? Roman Holiday is the film that brought Audrey Hepburn to prominence, and the world movie audience went weak at the knees. The endlessly charming Hepburn had her first starring role in this sweet romance, playing a European princess on an official tour through Rome. Frustrated by her lack of connection to the real world, she slips away from her protective handlers and goes on a spree, aided by a tough-guy news reporter (Gregory Peck). Director William Wyler, more at home with such heavy-going, Oscar-winning classics as The Best Years of Our Lives and Ben- Hur, doesn't always keep the champagne bubbles afloat, and the Peck role would have fit Cary Grant like a silk glove. But the film is great fun, the location shooting is irresistible, and Hepburn embodies an image of chic style that would rule for the rest of the fifties. No coincidence: she won an Oscar, and so did veteran costume designer Edith Head. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars My All-Time Favorite Movie.......2007-09-06

I have watched this movie at least a dozen times and it still never fails to enchant me. This may not be the best love movie of all but it is definitely one of the greatest and most enduring!

Audrey really looked fresh on the screen, Roman Holiday being her debut American film. Gregory Peck was really good as the newspaper guy contrary to what others think that he was a miscast. Regarding the ending, I admit I was really upset when I first watched it, but then I thought it was really the perfect ending. I would not have loved it so otherwise.

I recommend this to everyone who loves classic love stories and realistic endings!

3 out of 5 stars The past is not always as we remember it.......2007-08-28

My wife and I recently visited Italy, including several days in Rome. We thought watching this old movie (and Three Coins in a Fountain reviewed elsewhere) would be a pleasant way to relive some of the visit. My mother-in-law watched with us. Of the three of us, I was the only one who wanted to watch the whole movie (but I am a die-hard fan of old movies, generally of a different sort). It has not aged well. We were disapponted in the sparsity of scenes of Rome, that being our main reason for watching it. The story line was implausable in the 1950s and more so today, but the acting was okay, the storyline sufficient to keep my attention (if not that of my wife or mother-in-law) and I've always enjoyed Gregory Peck and Audrie Hepburn.

I remember being dragged to this movie as a young boy by my mother who could not get anyone else in the family to go with her. I was too young to protest successfully. Now that I am in my 60s, I think my earlier reluctance was not misplaced. However, it is harmless and pleasant enough in its own way and has an 1950s mildly uplifting theme. I can imagine a more modern treatment of this theme (princess wants to escape her life in the eye of the media and royal obligations and experience the common life for a while, then has to make a choice between "true love" and family/state obligations), but I doubt I would want to watch that either.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2007-08-02

What an amazing delight!
I think Audrey Hepburn is sensational but I had never seen this film. My husband who had suffered through years and years of romantic movies on Saturday afternoons at the Capitol with his mother started off hostile and set to be dismissive. Well within minutes we were bewitched, charmed and delighted. Audrey Hepburn was so fresh and unselfconscious - it was as if she had forgotten the cameras were there and she was just having fun with these great grownups. There is one scene where her laughter is as thrilling and unconditional as a child's - lovely and poignant.
And Rome, that other character in the film! Well I found myself thinking - this movie was made in 1953 - that is well over a century ago and I know that the past is a foreign country and all that but this was as good as a holiday in Rome and in the past.

4 out of 5 stars A good classic.......2007-07-24

The quality of this movie was great. It's a movie that spans time and is great for all generations.

5 out of 5 stars like a tour guide.......2007-05-30

This is a classic film anD while watching it is like having a tour of Rome, all the sights and famous monuments . If you have ever been to Rome it brings back all the memories of your own Roman Holiday.

At last--a great American movie available on video for the first time in its original aspect ratio. For all the slasher pictures that have ripped off Psycho (and particularly its classic set piece, the "shower scene"), nothing has ever matched the impact of the real thing. More than just a first-rate shocker full of thrills and suspense, Psycho is also an engrossing character study in which director Alfred Hitchcock skillfully seduces you into identifying with the main characters--then pulls the rug (or the bathmat) out from under you. Anthony Perkins is unforgettable as Norman Bates, the mama's boy proprietor of the Bates Motel; and so is Janet Leigh as Marion Crane, who makes an impulsive decision and becomes a fugitive from the law, hiding out at Norman's roadside inn for one fateful night. Psycho gets the masterpiece treatment it deserves on DVD, with extras including newsreel footage surrounding the making and release of the movie; an archive of production stills; the special trailer in which Hitchcock (acting as one of the original Universal Studio tour guides) himself leads viewers around the Bates place; credit designer Saul Bass's original "shower scene" story boards; posters and advertising materials for the movie's William Castle-like publicity campaign (No One Will Be Seated After the Feature Begins!); and a 90-minute documentary on the making of the film! What more could any movie fan possibly want? --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars NORMAN VS LEATHERFACE!.......2007-08-21

My caption comes from the fact that both "Psycho" and "The Texas Chainsaw Masacre" were loosely based on the same killer Ed Gein. These are completely different films of course, but I find it interesting none the less. I have seen "Pyscho" so many times that it's not something I watch often now. The movie is still brilliant and what made me want to see it recently was the fact that I finally built my home theater. I wasn't born when "Pshcho" was released in theaters and after 20 years of dreaming of having a home theater(long before they seemed possible)my vision has come true! The screen I have been viewing the movies I've reviewed is 150 inches which is a little over 10 feet long by little over 7 feet high. It was almost like watching it for the first time! I saw little things I never noticed thoughout the film and the score never sounded so good. If you have never seen this movie, you have missed one of the most copied films ever! The version I'm reviewing is in the Alfred Hitchcock Masterpiece collection box set. Four reasons to buy this movie...It's Hitchcock, Perkins gives the performance of his career, it's one of the best horror/thrillers ever made and the DVD transfer is excellent!

1 out of 5 stars NOT Anamorphic Widescreen.......2007-07-19

Need I say more? This 5-star movie on the Universal DVD is shown in "widescreen" format, but framed within a 4:3 viewing ratio. Which means you get black bars on the top and bottom, AND left and right. Which doesn't look like what you expect to see with any other movie on your widescreen TV. Do you get it? So, my conclusion is that Universal Home Video has really screwed up on the Hitchcock films they control. From the botched "restoration" on Rear Window (it's too fuzzy), to the goofy foley effects re-recorded for Vertigo, and now this insult to movie buffs (similar to BBC video's that keep their widescreen content firmly fixed in the 4:3 frame).

Paramount, on the other hand, got it right with their latest issue of "To Catch A Thief" with a clean sharp print, preserving the original VistaVision aspect ratio of 1.85:1 (as anamorphic widescreen).

I don't know why so many of the classic Hitchcock films are getting such bad treatment, with films such as "Notorious" and "Spellbound" remaining currently unavailable (check out the used prices to see how valuable these films really are). What I have seen from Criterion are only partially restored, and not digitized and cleaned up as current restoration efforts can accomplish.

I'm passing on any more Hitchcock DVD's from Universal, unless I have some confidence that the re-issues are done with some real attention to the quality of the release, as Paramount has done with their later releases.

5 out of 5 stars A True Classic.......2007-07-07

It's well worth it NOT to learn anything at all about the plot of this movie before you watch it. Part of the fantastic thrill of watching the tale unwind is learning the ins and outs of what is going on. You probably already know the keynote situation - a knife in a shower scene - but luckily that comes early on, so you don't spend half the movie wondering what it is all about.

Many aspects make this movie spectacular and worthy of the #18 AFI top movie rating. The black and white filming makes every shadow and corner suspect. It's not a movie about gore and blood - in fact many scenes deliberately scare you without showing you what actually is going on. Your imagination supplies the activity. It's more a movie about nerves - about wondering what is going to happen, worrying about consequences.

You can tell how amazing a movie is when, many decades later, a new director works to make a scene-by-scene reproduction of the movie with modern actors, just to help bring the story to a new generation. Viggo Mortensen fans are familiar with this one.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars an unusual masterpiece.......2007-07-06

By far Hitchcock's most twisted film, psycho twists plot, twists characters, and twists gender as no film ever had done.. Hitchcock was probably the best director at making technical breakthroughs and also in making those breakthroughs enjoyable for the audiece without any threads showing.. This is especially evident in psycho.. but also in other films like Vertigo with its famous vertigo camera effect that would later be copyed by several directors..
Psycho was a great success for Hitchcock and perhaps his last absolute masterpiece (though i would argue that the birds and Marnie were truly great masterpieces - and two of my favorites..) Anthony Perkins was truly made to play Norman bates.. although his career suffered afterwards as he would always be remembered as norman bates and he couldn't get the casting he deserved..
interestingly Hitchcock was extremely popular with the french new wave directors.. and psycho was kind of their bible in film - how to break the rules in effective ways..

5 out of 5 stars Psycho.......2007-06-28

Made at the peak of his career in 1960, "Psycho" was suspense master Hitchcock's last and most famous black-and-white picture--and a film that inaugurated the sub-genre of slasher movie. By the standards of today's gore-fests, it's a fairly restrained murder mystery, but disturbing nonetheless, achieving its chills more by what is withheld than shown. Hitchcock knows just how to heighten our dread of who or what might be at the top of the stairs, or beyond that shower curtain. The terrifying "Psycho" stands above most any psychological thriller made since.

Disney's 1986 Flight of the Navigator combines a strong ensemble cast and classic '80s soundtrack with dazzling special effects for a high-flying sci-fi adventure. While searching for his little brother in the woods, 12-year-old David Freeman (Joey Cramer) falls down a ravine and is knocked unconscious. After what seems like minutes, he returns home, only to discover that eight years have passed since he was declared missing and presumed dead. Even more mystifying is that David hasn't aged, nor can he account for the time lapse. Meanwhile, NASA officials stumble upon a futuristic spacecraft and are determined to assess what David knows about it by locking him in a top-secret lab for scanning and testing. His only chance of escape is in the spacecraft manned by Max, a wisecracking robot. Cramer gives an earnest performance, which overcomes an imperfect script, while enough one-liners and imaginative animation will keep families engaged. Watch for Sarah Jessica Parker in one of her first film appearances. Rated PG for language. (Ages 6 and older) --Lynn Gibson

3 out of 5 stars Kind of like a hippo, but with feathers.......2007-09-02

In this 1986 Disney flick, Veronica Cartwright (the whiny lady from 'Alien') played mother to a child kidnapped by a robotic space ship. Despite her best efforts, the plot sinks to an irritating low when the robot alien ship scans the child's mind and suddenly becomes Pee-wee Herman. Is any more commentary required? This is bad 1980's family movie-fluff, like Short Circuit, but more obnoxious. Watch it for sentimental value or for an ironic laugh at Disney's half-hearted critique of the xenophobia inherent in American foreign policy. Otherwise, entertain your kids with something more entertaining, like Veronica Cartwright's brilliant 1979 film 'Alien.'

3 out of 5 stars First ET, and now this...Another 80s film gets censored.......2007-08-28

The version I have on DVD is, unfortunately another victim of the trend of releasing great kid's films from the past in a "cleaned-up" version. The incident is very small, but I suppose I'm more upset because of the principle of censorship. There is a moment when the ships computer asks the central character David what it means when David says he has to use the bathroom. David tells Max to land, and then in a moment of frustration says that he has to take a "leak." I almost didn't notice this (since I haven't seen the film for at least 10 years), but there is even a line further on in the film (when the ship goes under water) that references said omission. David says he hopes that they don't get wet, to which the computer replies "I do not leak. You leak, remember?" I fortunately got this entertaining movie for a very low price (and it was nice to revisit a childhood favorite), but I would not have purchased this film had I known it was censored. (P.S.- Something similar happened with the re-release of "The Last Unicorn.")

What a terrific movie! Definately one to watch again and again. A little language, unfortunately, but overall, very satifiying.

I love reminiscing about watching and enjoying this movie as a child. Viewing it now, I find a different and delightful humor that I hadn't conceived in my early years. Great fun for the whole family.

In a departure from L.M. Montgomery's book series, this third TV movie jumps ahead to World War I and puts Anne and her beloved Gilbert smack in the middle of it. Instead of marrying Gilbert after her teaching days--as she does in the books--Anne spends a disillusioning year with him in New York City, and then the couple quickly marries before the good doctor ships out to France. (In the book Rilla of Ingleside, Anne's sons go to war and her youngest daughter is separated from her sweetheart.) Impetuous as ever, Anne joins the Red Cross and crosses the pond to track down her husband when his letters are returned unread. What follows is an adventure that takes her through battle zones--where the bodies pile up faster than you can say Saving Private Ryan--and on to London with a half-orphaned baby, her best friend's injured husband, and a tangle of international intrigue. Fans of the 10-book series may balk at the divergences and the fact that very little time is spent on Prince Edward Island. But the book's unrestrained romanticism and unapologetic sentimentality remain intact, as well as the surviving cast of the prior two movies, most notably Megan Follows as Anne and Jonathan Crombie as Gilbert. This movie, produced in 2000, clocks in at 185 minutes and is suitable for ages 9 and older. --Kimberly Heinrichs

1 out of 5 stars Quite a Disappointment.......2007-09-10

I LOVE the Anne of Green Gables series, I own Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea on DVD and I cherish them both. I watched The Continuing Story when it first aired on television and I was heart-broken. It strays from the books, and it felt like such a departure from the other two stories. Even the actors reprising their roles didn't quite fit. I was so sad! I wanted to love it as completely as the first two stories, but I kept getting distracted by Anne's now raspy voice, as if she has smoked quite a few more cigarettes than she should, and by Gil's sickly appearance. I really worry for his health and lifestyle! I recommend buying the first two movies in the series without hesitation, but skip The Continuing Story for sure!

Doris Day, the perky, chaste adult star of an odd collection of winking 1960s sex comedies, takes the Irene Dunne role in this remake of the comedy classic My Favorite Wife. As the survivor of a five-year ordeal on a desert island, she returns home the very day her husband has remarried. James Garner, trading his Maverick impish humor and con man cool for a mugging performance of double takes and pratfalls, is her overjoyed husband who is too cowardly to tell his neurotic bride (Polly Bergen). All of this, naturally, leads to a ridiculously complicated plot that combines door-slamming sex farce with mistaken identities (Day poses as a Swedish masseuse) and a goofy sped-up car chase. Chuck Connors, who costars as Day's hunky, he-man island mate "Adam," leads a topnotch supporting cast that includes sassy Thelma Ritter as Garner's no-nonsense mother, Don Knotts as a nervous shoe salesman enlisted by Day to impersonate Adam, Fred Clark at his indignant best, and John Astin and Pat Harrington in early roles. Edgar Buchanan practically steals the film as a gruff, irascible judge who growls through the legal circus that forms the film's chaotic climax. The cast for the most part rises above the tepid script and bland direction and Day sings two songs. Interestingly, this remake was originally developed for Marilyn Monroe and Dean Martin as the never completed Something's Got to Give. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie - Don't Miss this one on DVD!.......2007-09-11

The studios did a wonderful job in restoring this classic movie. It's always been a favorite, but the restoration made it all the better. In my opinion this is one of Doris Day's best comedy movies ever!!! The car wash scene is the best in the movie!

5 out of 5 stars A Doris Day Fan.......2007-09-01

The chemistry between Doris Day and James Garner is just as good as, if not better than, the chemistry Doris had with Hudson. This is another example of fine classic comedy filming at its best. It is funny, entertaining, and romantic. And, once again, it's all done without the insane use of profanity and the extended, over-indulgence of sex.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite Doris Day movies........2007-08-11

If you like Doris Day, this is one of the most enjoyable. In my opinion she should have made more movies with Garner. This is a fun movie.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-08-03

I saw this for the first time at the theater, and have loved it ever since. One of my favorite Doris Day Movies.

4 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-07-30

This is one of my top 3 favorite "oldies"... along with its original version, "My Favorite Wife", and the unsung "Vivacious Lady" with Ginger Rogers & Jimmy Stewart (which is my #1 pick).

Move Over, Darling is classic Doris Day: it's good, light-hearted fun! I would categorize it with "the thrill of it all" and "send me no flowers".

I don't know what else to say: I just recommend it, especially if you are already a Doris Day fan. You will be pleased! :)

A story line that truly deserves the A-list treatment, The Last Unicorn is memorable for its attempts to stay faithful to its origins, the Peter Beagle novel of the same name. The animation is vintage Rankin/Bass, and that's too bad; but there's an undeniable strength in this tale and telling. A unicorn (Mia Farrow)--she believes herself the last--searches for any others of her kind, while avoiding the malevolent Red Bull, the agent believed to have destroyed the rest of the herd. Along the way, she is mistaken, ignored, attacked, and obsessed about, finally finding help from a magician named Schmendrick (Alan Arkin) and a knight named Prince Lir (Jeff Bridges). A haunting film that pays homage to mythology and the people who love it. --Keith Simanton

Along the way she meets a colorful cast of characters, including a bumbling wizard who magically transforms her into a beautiful damsel. But the task proves harder than imagined, and the unicorn soon discovers that real magic comes from believing in the impossible. Featuring songs performed by America.

5 out of 5 stars The Thinking Man's Animation.......2007-08-25

I have been a fan of this film since I was a child and owned it on VHS in the 80s. Even though the DVD does not have the special features it touts on the backcover, I was just happy to have the film on DVD -I thought they would never release it! The Last Unicorn is about an immortal unicorn who leaves her enchanted forest after learning the rest of the unicorns have vanished from the Earth. On her quest she meets many memorable characters: gypsywoman Mommy Fortuna, Molly Grue, Shmendrick the Magician- to name a few. Molly, Shmendrick and the unicorn ban together, Molly and Shmendrick on their own emotional quests, and journey to King Hagard's castle where the unicorns are being held captive. Along the journey she is almost captured by The Red Bull, King Hagard's demon that holds the rest of the unicorns hostage. If she is captured, their quests ends, so Shmendrick changes her into a human girl so they can get past the bull and enter King Hagard's castle. As an immortal creature she never had to deal with mortal concerns, and as the beautiful woman Amalthea she begins to understand what it means to be human: the serach of identity, love, conflict, empathy. She learns of regret and thankfulness, of life and loss. Like the hobbits from "Lord of the Rings," the unicorn concludes her journey, but is forever changed by the friends she made the experiences she had. The forest will always be her home, but she no longer like the rest of the unicorns, for they will never know what it is to be human. This film is deeper than any animated film has a right to be. It works on several levels, and the older I become the more I see in it. The plot is complex and almost all of the character's are three-dimensional. The characters are voiced by some great acting talent: Alan Arkin (Shmendrick), Jeff Bridges ( Prince Leer), Mia Farrow (The Unicorn)- to name a few. The musical score is very befitting. This is a great film for all ages. Children will love the story, and adults will see the bittersweet, dark chocolate themes that run below its animated surface. p.s. If you like this, then you should try watching the film "Nausicaa"- another animated classic.

5 out of 5 stars Great deep messages.......2007-08-20

I loved it! I felt like a kid again. This is what we need in these times, a little bit of innocence and hope. No matter how old we are, we can still be children again. I enjoyed watching it with my nieces and nephews.

3 out of 5 stars The Last Unicorn.......2007-07-13

The movie was not as good as I had expected & is a little mature for a 5 yr old. I wouldn't buy this again although my grandaughter seemed to like it alright.

4 out of 5 stars Superb, but..........2007-06-08

This film is superb. I watched it many times as a young child, and am thrilled to be able to watch it again as an adult. It's one of the rare few films with more than enough wonder to hold the attention of a child, yet enough depth and honesty to touch the soul of a grown up; a deeply meaningful, poinient animated classic. Another reviewer described it as the "best animated film ever," and while I'm not quite bold enough to echo that sentiment, I can't seem to think of one that surpasses it at the moment.

That said, I'm deeply irritated by the edits that were made. The producers who did it should be ashamed of themselves for altering a single word. Who exactly did they think they were protecting? Or was it just a money thing? Stupid fools. Unchanged, it would get 5 stars, but in good concience, I must give it 4 stars for that reason alone.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-05-21

The presentation (picture and sound) are excellent. The edits mentioned are very annoying (and not edited out of the earlier DVD edition) but the widescreen presentation is much nicer to watch. The extra features are somewhat interesting but do not reveal anything very interesting about the movie itself (story-writing, making of, casting, etc.). Worth getting, but I am also keeping my earlier DVD for posterity.

Considered by many to be his masterpiece, L'Avventura positioned Michelangelo Antonioni as an international talent. What appears to be a search for a missing person is actually an examination of alienation and self-discovery found along a voyage through the morally decadent world of the idle rich. Less concerned with a smooth plotline, Antonioni tells his story through the use of symbolic images and flawless character development. Using 'real time' camera shots and rich, landscape imagery, Michelangelo Antonioni creates an unpredictable world where nothing is ever resolved. Ironically, what makes L'Avventura so unpredictable is the high level of realism portrayed by each character and their environments. This isn't your packaged, formulaic film with a happy ending. A tough one to watch but well worth it...and it gets better and better with repeat viewings. L'Avventura is quintessential Antonioini. Not to be missed. --Rob Bracco

Description

A girl mysteriously disappears on a yachting trip. While her lover and her best friend search for her across Italy, they begin an affair. Antonioni's penetrating study of the idle upper class offers stinging observations on spiritual isolation and the many meanings of love. Criterion is proud to present this milestone of film grammar in a new Special Edition double-disc set.

4 out of 5 stars Lost.......2007-08-01

What a week it has been for the world of cinema! In one day we lost two of the world's greatest filmmakers; Ingmar Bergman and Michelangelo Antonioni. There is something oddly fitting about that since both men made a career focusing on films in which characters felt isolated from the world. Bergman I would agrue invoked religion a bit more in his films, while Antonioni's films were more social commentaries. More modern in a sense. Bergman's films were poetry, Antonioni's had a more "every day" feel to them.

Antonioni is prbably best known to American audiences for his film "Blow-Up" (1967) which was nominated for Oscars and is seen as the inspiration for Francis Ford Coppola's "The Conversation".

It has often been said if you were asked to describe an Antonioni film, you wouldn't be able to. There is some truth to that, but it is not a criticism. His films were more about emotion. They created a certain mood. Yes, there have been those you argue his films are boring. No plot. They go on way too long. Heaven knows I've been in heated debates discussing Antonioni.

Of all his films I think "L' Avventura" may have been the best film to get his theme of alienation across. The film at first seems to be about a couple; Sandro (Gabriele Ferzetti) and Anna (Lea Massari). They are about to get married but she doesn't want to. She has become bored with her life. The two, along with some friends, including Claudia (Monica Vitti), take a boat trip togther. They make a stop on remote island and while on that island Anna disappears.

At this point in the film one would assume it is going to turn into some action film, the title after all, when translated into English means "The Adventure", but no, Antonioni pulls the rug from underneath us as soon the entire rescue theme is abandoned as Sandro and Claudia spark a romance while looking for Anna.

One of the questions I always liked to asked when I watch this film is, what happened to Anna. Some may think she was kidnapped. Others, perhaps drowned. I think she ran away knowing that Sandro would not seek to find her. Their love was dying, if it hadn't already.

Every character in "L' Avventura" is aimless. They have no direction. Just like their boat trip, which never at one point do we hear a character call out a destination, these characters are like the sea. They float along in society. They are literally drifters.

But not everyone liked 'L' Avventura" when it was first released. Stories are now legendary about the response it received at the Cannes Film Festival, it was meet with "boos". Some audiences members walked out. Despite everything it won the award for "Jury Prize" but lost the Gold Palm to Federico Fellini's "La Dolce Vita". Some have even argued "L' Avventura" and "La Dolce Vita" are the flip side of each other. Both films revolve around characters seeking the "sweet life".

Late in Antonioni's life he suffered a stroke which left him partially paralyzed. He was unable to speak and because of his declining health, producers would not want to work with him. In 1995 Wim Wenders co-directed one of Antonioni's masterpieces "Beyond the Cloud". Sadly, his last film to be seen in theaters, was part of a trilogy on erotica entitled "Eros". His segment, "The Dangerous Thread of Things" was unfairly criticized. Roger Ebert went as far as to call it "an embarrassment".

Though now with his passing I suppose some may want to go back and look at and re-examine his films. If you do chose to do so, I recommend starting with this film. If you are still hungry for more, this movie was the first part of a trilogy on alienation followed by "La Notte" (my personal favorite) and "L'Eclisse". Afterwards watch "The Passenger" and "Red Desert".

Bottom-line: One of the great Antonioni films and the one I think best gets his theme of alienation across. Antonioni will be greatly missed.

5 out of 5 stars Essential film genius: Antonioni's 'L'Avventura.'.......2007-08-01

The world lost one of its greatest film directors earlier this week. Known for his radical narrative style, Italian film genius Michelangelo Antonioni (1912-2007) depicted the alienation of man in the modern world in his powerful films. His films typically pondered existential questions of mortality, loneliness, emptiness, and moral decadence. Ingmar Bergman (who died on the same day as Antonioni) said he admired some of Antonioni's films for their detached and dreamlike quality, but considered most of Antonioni's films "boring."

Considered his masterpiece, L'Avventura (1960) is quintessential Antonioini, exemplifying his film aesthetics of slow pacing, spare plot, a narrative structure that relies upon a series of apparently disconnected events, and a theme of spiritual isolation in a world obssessed with material wealth. It is the first film of a trilogy, followed by La Notte and L'Eclisse - Criterion Collection. L'Avventura is an unsolved mystery (so don't expect a typical Hollywood ending) that tells the story of a group of rich couples from Rome, who take an overnight yachting trip to a remote, volcanic island off the coast of Sicily. A young woman named Anna (Lea Massari), vanishes after wandering off. Although the others in the group search for her, they eventually lose interest and return to their own idle lives. While searching for her, Anna's lover, Sandro (Gabriele Ferzetti), and her best friend, Claudia (Monica Vitti), quickly fall into an affair, and the film ends with people immersed in their moral decadence. At the 1960 Cannes Film Festival, the film was booed by some members of the audience, but it won the Special Jury Prize.

Criterion's first-rate two-disc edition includes digital transfer and enhanced sound, with improved English subtitles, a 58-minute documentary by Gianfranco Mingozzi, the fascinating writings by Antonioni, read by Jack Nicholson--plus Nicholson's personal recollections of the director, and the original theatrical trailer.

5 out of 5 stars The Shallowness of Love.......2007-06-10

Michelangelo Antonioni throws one love off a cliff (literally), but not before showing us its depth, and then walks us through the formation of another. I am reminded of Nabakov's Lolita in how we are led to empathize with what we would condemn if presented less obliquely and artfully.

This film does nothing less than expose the shallowness and flimsiness of our humanity -- how quickly "friendship," "love," and "fidelity" melt away when tested! Such mammals we are!

Be careful or you'll hate yourself for loving this film, as I do.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the Effort.......2007-05-25

Filmgoers seem to either love L'Avventura or hate it. This picture is difficult. Michelangelo Antonioni challenges us. We are forced to work, to have patience, and, most difficult of all, to accept uncertainty. He does not provide us with a groovy soundtrack to compensate for cinematic deficiencies or satisfy the modern movie audience's expectations of full sensory overload. L'Avventura is meant to be watched, really watched. And, in fact, Gene Youngblood, the film critic who supplies the commentary, refers to the protagonist, Claudia, as "the witness." As the viewers we then witness Claudia witnessing the world around her. She is also the only character in the film who sees anything outside of herself, be it art, architecture, landscape, or the fact that her friend, Anna, goes missing on a yachting cruise off the coast of Lisca Bianca, one of the Aeolian islands. She is the only one who cries over the incident. From the second we learn of Anna's disappearance, the plot of L'Avventura seems to be established. With the exception of Claudia, the other crew members make half-hearted attempts to find Anna, but it is obvious they have better things to do because they are rich and have places to go and people to see. It is this indifference that throws the viewer off course, and as the film unfolds we learn that L'Avventura is about something else entirely. Actually the film is about many things, which won't be revealed here.

Michelangelo Antonioni is a Zen-like director in that he depicts life as it is with all its contradictions, simple yet complex, soothing and disturbing, an adventure and a bore, beautiful but lonely. He does not spare us. Even though L'Avventura focuses on a group of wealthy so-called friends, the human condition is the human condition regardless of how much money one has. The major difference, and what Antonioni might be trying to convey, is that those with money can buy diversions, a yacht, an Alfa Romeo, a villa. And since these same people do not work they are forced to buy time. Casual sex buys time, as well as endless parties and fancy dinners. The point is that the more distractions one has the easier it is to bury the inevitable pain of loss, betrayal, fear, loneliness, to name but a few, that are a part of life. However, the pain is still there for these people and maybe even more intensely, given the fact that all they have is a lot of toys but no genuine relationships, passion or meaning in their lives.

Gene Youngblood, referred to earlier, is wonderful as the commentator. He is enlightening and unpretentious. He admits to having seen L'Avventura twelve times in 1961, so he knows his subject. And his love for this film is contagious. For those who have had or are having trouble with the picture, it is recommended to try watching again with the commentary.
The second disc contains testimonials from people who have known Antonioni and/or worked with him, so the viewer can gain further insight into the director's ideas, what he tried to say through his captivating images, and simply learn more about the man himself. There is also a brief segment on the restoration of the film, which is interesting and amazing. Thankfully there are people talented and patient enough to take on this arduous process. How sad it would be to lose such an innovative and exquisite film. Buy this gem as soon as possible.

1 out of 5 stars I HATED THIS FILM this film!.......2007-04-18

After reading all of the reviews, I was so excited to view a great film. However, after about an hour of waiting for something plausible to happen, it just drifted . . . and drifted . . . and meandered . . . and, oh here's a scene: she says "No" to the main character advances, and he ignores her initial rejection . . . and then it meanders more into something so absurd that I started to laugh.

C'mon, people! To all of you 4- and 5-star people, just because a film involves beautiful settings and artsy characters, that does NOT constitute a story!!

I'm sorry, maybe it's me, but message to the character Claudia in the movie: If some cad starts coming onto you while he's simultaneously searching for his fiancee (and your friend) who may very well have drowned, then get a 1000 miles away from this scum . . . and to all viewers watching this exercise in self-indulgence and boredom, get a 1000 miles away from this farce of a film.

I am an enormous fan of stylish, artistic films, but just like those paintings at fancy museums that are being portrayed as elite art but instead are just simple circles and triangles on a blank canvas, this film is NOT art. It's just boring, boring, boring, uninteresting. I could not care about these characters any less, other than poor Anna who disappeared from that island . . . . actually, now that I think about it, Anna was the only smart one there! She jumped off that island as quickly as she could so as get out of this ostentatious, boring, pompous, self-indulgent, uneventful, dreadful, meandering, dumb film!

Way to go, Anna! You're the only one with any sense. Even if you did drown, trust me, that is a better fate than having to survive this DULL film.

So, in case you didn't get my point, let me spell it out once again: I HATED this film so completely! I would rather watch water trickling from my sink. At least that has a story!!

Aaaargh -- I want my 2 hours back! I gave up 2 precious hours of my life to watch this pathetic film.

Anybody who has written him off because of his string of stinkers--or anybody who's too young to remember The Goodbye Girl--may be shocked at the accomplishment and nuance of Richard Dreyfuss's performance in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Here, he plays a man possessed; contacted by aliens, he (along with other members of the "chosen") is drawn toward the site of the incipient landing: Devil's Tower, in rural Wyoming. As in many Spielberg films, there are no personalized enemies; the struggle is between those who have been called and a scientific establishment that seeks to protect them by keeping them away from the arriving spacecraft. The ship, and the special effects in general, are every bit as jaw-dropping on the small screen as they were in the theater (well, almost). Released in 1977 as a cerebral alternative to the swashbuckling science fiction epics then in vogue, Close Encounters now seems almost wholesome in its representation of alien contact and interested less in philosophizing about extraterrestrials than it is in examining the nature of the inner "call." Ultimately a motion picture about the obsession of the driven artist or determined visionary, Close Encounters comes complete with the stock Spielberg wives and girlfriends who seek to tether the dreamy, possessed protagonists to the more mundane concerns of the everyday. So a spectacular, seminal motion picture indeed, but one with gender politics that are all too terrestrial. --Miles Bethany

1 out of 5 stars GOOD RIDDANCE TO A TOAD OF A HUSBAND.......2007-08-19

If I had a husband that lost his job, didnt look for new work to support his family, trashes my kitchen, argues with me in front of our three kids, runs off to passionately kiss a single mom, then hops aboard a UFO, GOOD RIDDANCE!

The ending of the film should have been the aliens harvasting his organs. They wanted to know what a lousy earth husband was made of.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Sci-Fi movies ever........2007-08-16

This is definitely one of the best Sci-Fi movies ever. Steven Spielberg has given us many Sci-Fi movies and his first is still arguably his best. The "Collector Edition" of Close Encouters of the Third Kind presents us with the third version of the 1977 hit.

This is an absolutely wonderful movie and DVD. It is presented in its original theatrical aspect ratio, although this edition was not the one originally in theatres. On top of that, it is a wonderful Two Disc Edition, with features that everyone could love.

It includes a feauturette, clocking in at 102 minutes, is a movie itself. It is entitled "Watch the Skies". It also includes a second feauturette and a beavy of deleted scenes, 11 in total. I suggest you pick this up. You could always wait for the Definitive Three Disc Edition, but if you're hard up on cash, I suggest this one. You will not be disappointed. It's an excellent film.

5 out of 5 stars When You Wish Upon A Star.......2007-08-14

When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are, anything your heart desires will come to you.

Close Encounters Of The Third Kind is the journey of Roy Neary. Roy Neary is a dreamer, stuck in the mundane craziness of everyday life. One night Roy sees something that changes his life, he has a Close Encounter with something unexplainable.

Roy's life goes into an tailspin. He loses many things that are dear to him in his search for truth, his curiosity becomes an obsession. Roy begins to see the shape of a mountain in pillows, in shaving cream, and seems to be falling apart at the seams.

This Close Encounter has changed Roy Neary's life, and that of those who are featured along his journey. This film has stood the test of time for thirty years, and is a testament to the talent of Steven Spielberg.

This film, along with Star Wars revolutionized not only special effects but blockbusters in general. I've never seen another film that weaves both music and special effects so beautifully.

If you haven't seen this classic and timeless film, please take the time to do so. It is an experience that you will never forget.

Like a bolt out of the blue, fate steps in and sees you thru
When you wish upon a star, your dreams come true.

Perhaps best known for its faux Springsteen soundtrack, the 1983 Eddie and the Cruisers is a rock lover's fantasy run wild. The story finds a reporter (Ellen Barkin) tracking down rumors of an unreleased album by a band whose charismatic leader (Michael Paré) allegedly died years before. As she approaches surviving members--who have since gone on to other things--she gets different points of view on Eddie's life and artistic drive, and the mystery about that album deepens. The trouble with the film is simple: it's impossible to accept. Michael Paré is far from suitable to play a Jersey shore rocker with thematic pretensions toward Rimbaud that go back to the '60s, and the soundtrack by John Cafferty sounds like a hack's rendition of E Street Band magic. An all-around embarrassment. --Tom Keogh

Description

They say rock 'n' roll never dies, but one dark night in 1963, Eddie Wilson's car took a dive off aJersey bridge with the troubled rock idol at the wheel. His body was never found. Tom Berenger (Platoon), Michael ParÃ(c) (Streets of Fire) and Ellen Barkin (Sea of Love) star in this cool, compelling classic that really rocks! Twenty years after the lead singer (ParÃ(c)) of"Eddie and the Cruisers" disappeared, the band's songs are hotter than ever. And renewed interest in the band leads TV reporter Maggie Foley (Barkin) to pursue a tantalizing mystery: What if Eddie isstill alive? The circumstances surrounding his death are just shadowy enough to make it a distinct possibility, and someone (could it be Eddie?) has been ransacking the homes of surviving band members in a desperate search for tapes of the group's visionary, never-released album. As Maggie interviews the former "Cruisers," the pieces of the puzzle start to fit...but only until still deeper mysteries begin to surface.

4 out of 5 stars Eddie.......2007-08-08

Music is the string that binds us all together & this one leads us into a seldom seen world of what it takes to lead the way & pay the price! John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band deserve a whole lot more credit thant the recieved!! GREAT soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant rock blend!.......2007-08-07

If you're familiar with the history of American and British rock, and the people who were pioneers in it, you'll see hints here of Buddy Holly, John Lennon, Brian Wilson, Jim Morrison, and others in the interactions between Eddie Wilson, the brilliant, enigmatic leader of the Cruisers, and his sidemen. The idea of a rock band leader even knowing who Arthur Rimbaud was, let alone composing a rock song called "A Season In Hell," is most intriguing.
The story is woven expertly as the plot leads one to believe he has figured out what the climax is going to be -- then knocks him for a loop with what appears to be one of those "explaining it all away logically" endings that are so frustrating to those of us who have a love for fantasy.
Then -- just when you think the film is ending predictably, there is the famous shot of the people standing outside a store window, watching a news report about the story of Eddie and the Cruisers on a TV in that window. That final scene, with its brilliant denouement, is one of the most affecting I've ever seen in a movie.
If you have never seen "Eddie and the Cruisers," rent it. Or better yet, buy it from Amazon. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Brave Little Toaster.......2007-08-04

This is one of the most cherished movies of my childhood, well thought out it was a great movie that shows that we are a throwaway society if looked into the moral of the story.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Filled Adventure.......2007-08-03

This was the first movie my daughter ever watched when she was two years old. She watched it over and over. I really liked it to. It was filled with fun adventures that toaster and his friends went on. Totally entertaining & highly recommended. Great songs for the kids to sing along with too!

1 out of 5 stars DVD with VHS Tracking Type of Problems.......2007-07-19

Viewing the Brave Little Toaster DVD was like watching a very used VHS tape. There were tracking lines shaking through the entire movie. The quality does not look like anything Disney produced. It viewed like a pirated copy of a bad VHS tape. The Brave Little Toaster

5 out of 5 stars Childhood Favorite.......2007-07-06

This was always my favorite movie as a child and watching it as a young adult I am still enthralled by these adventerous appliances. All good movies have a central theme and an intersesting captivating plot. Who wouldn't like a movie about five appliances that embark on a journey to find their master, who couldn't imagine abandoning them. Great lyrics and music make for an amazing movie experiance.

5 out of 5 stars Brave Little Toaster--a timeless classic.......2007-06-01

I discovered this movie 20 years ago when my own children--3 boys were little. It was my middle son's most favorite movie; he watched it all the time. I now have a niece and nephew (both age 3)--and I was wracking my brain for ideas on what to get them when I remembered this video. I sent it to them both for their birthdays and got rave reviews back from their mothers--so I would call this a timeless classic with a wonderful message for children (and adults too!). I'm so glad I found this on AMAZON.com.
