Comparisons with E.T. are inevitable, but the more modest The Last Mimzy is based on the classic short story "Mimzy Were the Borogoves," by Lewis Padgett (a pseudonym for husband-and-wife writing team Henry Kuttner and C.L. Moore), that anticipated Steven Spielberg's extraterrestrial fantasy by nearly four decades. Chris O'Neil and Rhiannon Leigh Wryn give winning, naturalistic performances as siblings Noah and Emma, whose lives are transformed by a box of mysterious objects they find on the beach outside the family's Seattle vacation home. Among its contents is a stuffed rabbit that Emma names Mimzy and becomes quite attached. Noah and Emma are your typical outsiders. He is not good at sports, and she is interested in astronomy and plays the violin. But the objects work wonders on them. Their brainpower increases exponentially, Noah is able to drive a golf ball hundreds of yards, and Emma begins to communicate telepathically with Mimzy, who reveals his true identity and purpose. Rainn Wilson of The Office displays an off-center charm as Mr. White, Noah's New Age-y science teacher, who discovers similarities between Noah's intricate notebook doodlings and ancient renderings of the universe ("This is so out of my league," he marvels at one point), and becomes involved in Mimzy's back-to-the-future quest. Timothy Hutton and Joely Richardson are solid as the understandably confounded and increasingly concerned parents. Michael Clarke Duncan is a menacing FBI agent who, invoking the Patriot Act, arrests the family after Noah inadvertently causes a citywide blackout with one of the futuristic objects. The Last Mimzy may not reach E.T.'s spectacular heights, but as thoughtfully adapted for the screen by Bruce Joel Rubin (Ghost) and Toby Emmerich (Frequency), it is a transporting, idea-rich family film that is free of gratuitous coarse language (save for Mr. White's offhand classroom use of the word "screw") or bathroom humor. --Donald Liebenson

The Easter Bunny phones home.......2007-09-13
*spoilers*
"The Last Mimzy" is such a shameless and unabashed rip-off of "E.T.-The Extra Terrestrial" that Steven Spielberg ought to sue the makers of the film for blatant copyright infringement of his famous material.
Noah and Emma Wilder are two Seattle youngsters who discover a mysterious box floating in the ocean. Upon opening it, the children find it contains several abnormal objects including an odd stuffed-animal rabbit that calls itself Mimzy and communicates in a garbled, incomprehensible language to the little girl. In addition, the children themselves become endowed with strange preternatural knowledge and extrasensory powers as a result of their encounter with the material. The first part of the movie is dedicated to the kids' efforts to hide the secret from their parents, while the second involves the government scientist's typically clumsy efforts at studying the bizarre phenomenon.
Virtually every major idea from "E.T." manages, at some point or other, to find its way into this film, starting with the basic alien-from-outer-space-being-hidden-by-adorable-children scenario and heading on from there. The other similarities include the psychic connection between alien and child, the frightened, uncomprehending adults, the threatening government officials, the seemingly dying alien, and the kids' stealing of a vehicle in an effort to outrun the authorities. This is certainly not the first movie to try to siphon off some of "E.T."'s irreproducible charms for its own benefit ("Short Circuit," "The Iron Giant" and "The Indian in the Cupboard" come first to mind), but it is definitely the creepiest and most New Age-y of the lot. Then, after all is said and done, the screenplay gives us an anticlimactic epilogue so convoluted and muddled that even Stephen Hawking himself would have trouble comprehending it.
As Noah and Emma, Chris O'Neill and Rhiannon Leigh Wryn don't exactly set the screen on fire with their performances, but they are at least adequate to the task they are called on to fulfill - which is more than can be said for Timothy Hutton, Joely Richardson, Rainn Wilson and Michael Clark Duncan who are stranded in poorly written roles as the various adults on hand.
Forget about phoning home; E.T. should be calling his lawyer.
Great story--I hope children will love it and will understand it years later when they see it again.......2007-09-11
Two children visiting their cottage on Whidby Island find a box full of toys, including a stuffed rabbit. Soon, their abilities expand. Noah, the eldest, was barely passing Science now he's submitted a Science Fair project that could win National. And, Emma is talking to her stuffed bunny and it's telling her about a very bleak time for a future race and asking her to help.
The story's great, the casting and effects are enthralling. I think "Mimzy" is destined to be a children's classic. While the young ones won't really understand what the story means right now, I think it's one they will watch again and again--and a valuable lesson will sink in.
Suckiest Movie In History With Even Worse Casting.......2007-09-04
I have never seen a more miscast, boring, irritating movie in my life. Where was this movie made? Another Galaxy? It---and the "cast"---were totally unrelatable, unlikeable, and made me squirmy. It was so bad I asked for my money back.
Fantasy + Science Fiction + Environmentalism.......2007-08-31
The title of this movie, The Last Mimzy, refers to a toy bunny doll that is actually a form of artificial intelligence, created in the distant future, and sent back in time. Its creator is a scientist who lives in an Earth that has been so polluted that the human gene pool has been horribly damaged. These scientist makes these toy dolls and sends them back through time to collect virgin human DNA to bring back to the future to replenish the human gene pool. No Mimzy has ever made it back to the future, except for the one discovered by Emma and Noah, a sister and brother who live in Seattle with their parents. Once discovered, Mimzy embues both siblings with astonishing brainpower and technical skills that changes their lives, and leads them to create a bridge through time for Mimzy to travel through. The DNA Mimzy takes back is from a teardrop from Emma.
This was one of those movies that did not do that well at the theaters. Its release was short, and soon ended up on DVD. This is surprising considering the quality of this movie. The cast are comprised of mostly unknowns, but they deliver. The dialogue is realistic, and the special effects help carry the movie. The storyline is a blend of family drama, science fiction, adventure, and environmentalism. Overall, a great movie, and worth the time to see it.
Fine movie, disgraceful DVD.......2007-08-26
This is the first DVD I've ever encountered where its authors disabled the pause, rewind, and fast forward buttons. This is defective by design. I liked the film, but the restrictions on the DVD are something I can not stand.

This documentary is very well done.Faster than light is possble IF you know about micro wave technology, megnetic wave technology, and and infra red wave technology. We have barely scrached the surface of these power emiting technologies. This documentary is a ver good, sober and thought provoking subject. We disbielieve the govermant on iraq but accept what they say about UFO'S!!??
4 Definitive Reasons..........2007-09-04
...why aliens have never visited us:
1. The laws of physics don't allow it
Folks, the nearest star is 4 light years away. This means it takes light 4 years to travel from there to Earth. In order for space travel to be realistic you would need a craft that travels greater than the speed of light. Unfortunately, in order for matter to travel AT the speed of light you would need an infinite amount of energy. Apparently the aliens have a gas tank that holds multiple infinite amounts of energy.
2. The Federal Government is one of the most incompetent entities ever created
One argument for lack of evidence is due to the government's ability to keep people from talking. Gee, why don't the feds use this fabulous influence they have over people to stop murder, rape, robbery, etc. They couldn't keep Watergate or Iran-Contra a secret, but somehow they are able to keep a lid on the greatest story in human history (for 60-some years, no less)?
3. MONEY!!!
People risk their lives & freedom every day for relatively paltry amounts of money compared to what could be earned being the first person to come forward with credible evidence of itelligent alien life. Successful theives, robbers, embezzlers, spies and the like are paupers compared to these potential riches.
4. YouTube
The use of video & photographic technology has ballooned in the past 30 years. You'd think at the very least a chance encounter would have been captured by now; certainly there are enough people walking around with the technology right in their pockets to make this happen, yet there is still no *definitive* evidence of aliens or their spaceships.
When a documentary like this appears on 60 Minutes instead of the SciFi Channel then I'll start paying attention.
Brilliant Film.......2007-04-12
This documentary has some interviews that I'm amazed took place at all. In fact, 2 of the people interviewed died shortly after. *Spooky Music Plays*
For those of you who are looking at the $239 price tag on this thing, don't worry, because this film is being re-made as we speak. New soundtrack, new interviews, and I'm sure a few other goodies to boot.
This DVD is well worth seeing. If you have an abundance of cash, go ahead and buy this original version. If not, hold on a while and get the updated version once it hits the scene.
UFO: reality bites.......2007-02-11
"Out of the Blue" is a really interesting doco presenting both a worldwide collated visual data on UFO, and political games surrounding the phenomena unexplained.
A DVD set of "The KGB Secret Files" about space abductions, UFO and alliances is a logical extension to info this film has provided.
a review from a discerning Christian's perspective.......2007-02-02
This was a pretty intriguing video. Anytime you have a collection of testimony of UFO's from generals, presidents, and astronauts, along with footage of "UFO's", you got a darned entertaining video.
A few knocks against it before I make the faint theoretical biblical tie-in. This ting is way expensive and hard to track down for cheap (I've never seen a DVD go from like 15 bucks to $120 used!!! What's up? Can't the producers, or discovery channel, or whoever make some more of these if they're so popular? The government doesn't really give a hoot, methinks, do they?)
Another bone I have to pick: Don't the supposed "UFO" sightings in Bejing, China and the Miami skyline LOOK REMARKABLY LIKE BLIMPS REFLECTING LIGHT!!!?????
I find it hard to believe that they're anything else considering that like only one guy with a camera took the time to spot this thing if it really was a UFO when there's like millions of people around these two areas, especially.
Anywho, the Phoenix deal is very compelling; it would help if the video focused a little more on the many more photos of that deal that I think exist,... and to be balanced perhaps question military officials on what else it could be, like some type of holographic weapons design or something.
As for "UFO's" in the bible? Well, there are a number of far left theories about the "cloud of fire" that traveled around Moses and the like. I've also seen documentaries in which fairly dated paintings of the Virgin Mary and the Christ child have what appear to be a metallic disc in the air in the background. The vision of Ezekiel (Ezekiel chapter 1) is certainly a compelling story about beings looking out from windows of discs, "wheels within the wheels", in which the bible declares that "the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels" -- a clear indication that these supposedly angelic beings were operating in some type of mechanical transport. If Godly angels operate using these things... then what about the fallen angels taking advantage of technology? That of course is where the extreme right church view comes in: that all UFO's are either demonic deception or actually demons themselves in transport.
For an open, yet not-too-fanatical biblical debate on the matter, I suggest checking out Pastor Chuck Missler (of Calvary Chapel) and some of his teachings, which include a video entitled "Return of the Nephilim" I believe. This biblical theory suggests that the flood came because angels (the sons of God) came into the "daughters of men" (Genesis 6) producing a race of supposed supernatural beings denoted as the nephilim (which are actually the UFO aliens). Pretty interesting theories; many in the Calvary Chapel movement, for the record, totally despise the guy.
And while you're there on Missler's site, you can check out stuff about Jesus. He's pretty interesting too, you know.
Speaking of, one reviewer (John Marvel) states that people who follow this stuff are doing so out of ignorance and boredom. I suggest looking at that cat's reviews. Yeah, .....sleepers. And most of his reviews are on stuff he himself gave a one star rating!!! How sad is that? Who's got the mundane life now, buddy?

More of a real-life exploitation film than a bonafide documentary, Cocaine Cowboys is tailor-made for anyone who worships Brian De Palma's Scarface. It's no surprise that this slick, energetic film found a niche audience among crime-obsessed hip-hoppers; from a journalistic perspective it's an irresponsible mess, but director Billy Corben is obviously more interested in capturing the thrills and danger of the drug trade that transformed Miami, Florida during the Miami Vice era of the late 1970s and '80s. Corben has no particular interest in seriously examining the sociopolitical implications of Miami's drug-fueled rise and fall, so Cocaine Cowboys lives up to its title by focusing on some of the most colorful, daring, and outrageously successful survivors of that era, when tons of cocaine were distributed through Miami by the kingpins of Colombia's notorious Medellin cartel. Chief among the many interviewees are Jon Roberts and Mickey Munday (who personally transported over $2 billion worth of cocaine into Miami) and Jorge "Rivi" Ayala, a convicted drug-trade assassin now serving consecutive life terms in prison. They're lively storytellers who are egotistically eager to share their coke-tales, and Corben's only too happy to capture their exploits on film, up to and including the dubious use of violent reenactments that could easily serve as a recruitment film for Tony Montana wannabes.
It's simultaneously disgusting and compelling, especially since Corben has a knack for matching swift editing to the pulsing score by TV's original Miami Vice composer Jan Hammer. In the final analysis, it must be said that Cocaine Cowboys succeeds as a brash and breathtaking record of a bygone era, when murder rates were at an all-time high, coke was everywhere, and Miami was financially transformed into a nightlife mecca where criminals were kings. Or queens, as in the case of Griselda Blanco, the ruthless and self-appointed "Godmother" of the cocaine trade, who was responsible for countless murders and as of 2007 remained at large, her whereabouts unknown. All of this deadly life in the fast lane makes for a fascinating movie, but Corben and coproducer David Cypkin's breathless commentary makes it clear that they're young, immature thrill-seekers, and their film makes no apologies for glorifying the drug trade while exploring its bloody and frequently fatal consequences. Their commentary also accompanies an abundance of deleted scenes, and there's also a bonus featurette, "Hustlin' with the Godmother," in which Griselda Blanco's former lover and big-time coke dealer Charles Cosby tells his story, which clearly has all the makings of a Hollywood movie along the lines of Blow. You can bet that film will eventually be made, and don't be surprised if it's Corben who makes it. --Jeff Shannon

Excellent and Educational. .......2007-08-25
This kind of looked like it was going to be a seriously low budget no frills production, but it turned out to be a first rate documentary. Cocaine Cowboys explores not only drug traffickers and the cocaine trade, but also the rise of a great American city. Florida in the seventies was "wide open," and, as always, the government was several steps behind the criminals. The venture that Mr. Roberts had with Mr. Munday flying "product" in and out of Columbia was pretty fascinating as were the links with the Ochoa Cartel. The interviews are excellent and these fellows, along with hitman Rivi Ayala, tell us just about everything we need to know about a period in Miami's history when it was wilder than the wild west. Godmother Griselda Blanco was a fascinating, although detestable, character, and one I had never heard of before seeing the documentary. Were it not for drug cash would Miami be what it is today? Quite doubtful.
Oh my God the money!.......2007-08-14
This movie almost makes the case for legalization. Can you imagine making $1.2 million for one trip. I'm still blown away by the amount of money these guys earned. On the other hand, the violence that accompanies the money is scary. In the end, Miami, like Hong Kong, prospered by satisfying the needs of the middle class, the impact of which can still be seen. On another note, the people involved, celebrities, doctors, lawyers and politicians is unbelieveable.
Cocaine Cowboys.......2007-07-05
Definitely a must see movie, shows the real side of miami that alot of people haven't seen.
The best drug story told...........2007-06-30
This documentary was so good, and so well told. It had me at the end of my seat in awe and shocked. One of the best drug told documentries ever...if you haven't seen it yet, please do. Miami was getting money fo' real.
Great In All Aspects.......2007-06-27
As a Miami resident, I found the film to be intriguing and very informative. Having grown up in South Florida, the film was 100% accurate and the way it was presented kept you glued to the TV. I do hope that the great city of Miami never repeats the past.

This B movie with noble aspirations is the work of a gifted filmmaker whose storytelling falls short of his considerable stylistic flair. While addressing crises of faith in the framework of an alien-invasion thriller, M. Night Shyamalan (in his follow-up to The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable) favors atmospheric tension over explanatory plotting. He injects subtle humor into expertly spooky scenes, but the story suffers from too many lapses in logic. The film's faults are greatly compensated by the performance of Mel Gibson as a widower whose own crisis of faith coincides with the appearance of mysterious crop circles in his Pennsylvania cornfield... and hundreds of UFOs around the globe. With his brother (Joaquin Phoenix) and two young children (Rory Culkin, Abigail Breslin), the lapsed minister perceives this phenomenal occurrence as a series of signs and portents, while Shyamalan pursues a spookfest with War of the Worlds overtones. It's effective to a point, but vaguely hollow at its core. --Jeff Shannon
Description
From M. Night Shyamalan, the writer/director of THE SIXTH SENSE and UNBREAKABLE, comes the story of the Hess family in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, who wake up one morning to find a 500-foot crop circle in their backyard. Graham Hess (Mel Gibson) and his family are told extraterrestrials are responsible for the sign in their field. They watch, with growing dread, the news of crop circles being found all over the world. SIGNS is the emotional story of one family on one farm as they encounter the terrifying last moments of life as the world is being invaded. "It's easy for a filmmaker to blow up the world -- but what Shyamalan does is much riskier. He tries to blow our minds. I was engaged by every inch of SIGNS." - Richard Roeper, Ebert & Roeper.

THE WAY TO TELL THE WORLD THAT THEY'RE OUT THERE!!.......2007-09-02
i loved this movie, the whole deal. peaceful community, normal family, then bam, a huge crop circle right on thier farm. what is it? where did it come from? who made it? not human, they're watching, and they're coming, but not in peace. this movies got great suspense, good visual, and the aliens look crazy freaky. every time i watch it it still gets me. mostly because all this about crop circles is for real, it's based on real life events. so then what's going to happen in the future. who knows? mel gibson is a great actor no doubt and in this film it shows, as with joaquin phoenix great actor as well. love him. once again m. night shyamalan knows how to do it. he tries to bring more than others to the table through his films and he always succeeds. great job.
Great movie and some good extra features!.......2007-08-04
The movie was great. When I got a gift card for Christmas one year I knew this was the DVD I wanted to buy. It's one of M Night Shyamalan's best movies (I even think it was better than Sixth Sense).
The DVD has an neat bonus footage on it - like a movie made by MNS when he was a kid. It's great to see his vision as a child and how far he has grown. The DVD also has a nice story board to scene feature for certain parts of the movie. It's kinda neat to see how the finished product stacked up against the story boards.
However with a movie with this much humor I would have loved to seen some bloopers or outtakes. But then again I say that about every movie.
My favorite M. Night Shyamalan film........2007-07-31
I love thrillers, sci-fi, and spiritual/moral dilemma films and who would think that one film would have all that I grave.
Amazon gives a good snynopsis of the story, so no need to repeat it here, but I greatly disagree with their notion that this film is somewhat hollow or empty which I find ironic after they mention all this film is about and the crisis of faith that comes to a head with Mel Gibson's fallen minister character. This film is extremely well-written, outstandingly acted by all familiar actors who disappear into their roles, and effectively directed by Shyamalan who also wrote the film. James Newton Howard, ER and The Sixth Sense, created the memorable and haunting score which greatly added to the atmosphere of the film. In addition, the special effects and make-up team, guided by Shyamalan's vision and direction, created chills and believability without massive Spielberg-style (War of the Worlds) treatment which would have been only a distraction in this film.
My only real criticism is that this film has Shyamalan's trademark approach. That means that it's all rather contrived and he hammers us at the end for not seeing the ending coming (yet again, a la The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable). However, to pick on this element of his directorial/writing style is like picking on Hitchcock's use of suspense in his classic films.
This film has great repeat value even after knowing how the "signs" all add up. This is one of my absolute favorite films of all time. You may not enjoy it as much as I did, but I sincerely believe that most will enjoy this film for one reason or another.
Are you the type who sees signs?.......2007-06-18
Signs has much more to offer than Orson Welles' "War of the Worlds." In this reality, the world is populated with numerous signs seemingly hidden in plain sight.
Director M. Night Shyamalan divides people into two camps: The type who believes in miracles, sees signs; and those who think we just get lucky.
Shyamalan's carefully crafted universe has creatures that must resort to warring with other planets to survive... and there is us. Shyamalan's war pits technologically superior creatures against an unsuspecting world, and a shattered world occupied by a clergyman who questions his faith following the death of his wife. Shyamalan goes further than the Sixth Sense, the bone-chilling tale of a young boy ("I see dead people") haunted by ghosts who appear regularly in his life to enlist his help. In Signs, Shyamalan declares not only can we help the dead, the dead also help us.
Another way of putting it: There are no coincidences. From the son's asthma and the daughter's dreams to the brother's baseball prowess and the tragic instance in which a veterinarian's momentary lapse at the wheel claims a life. The plot is a masterpiece in misdirection. Signs opens to an aerial view of crop circles. More signs of the impending invasion appear as the story moves forward. But these are not the signs that we should be looking at. In the last reel, the dying wife who has but a moment to tell seems to be rambling. But it turns out, she was staring into the future, not her husband's eyes.
This movie says we are much more than we seem.
Mel Gibson's character, the grieving Rev. Graham Hess finds himself suddenly struggling to make sense of the many odd happenings at his farm. He already has isolated himself following his wife's death. Of course, his guard is up. But he finds himself awkwardly grasping to cling to his understanding of the new reality. He can dismiss the crop circles in his fields as mischief by pranksters. But, he soon can't deny the mounting evidence and nocturnal visits from unseen and unseeable intruders. Edgy, provocative and well-paced, Signs is a multilayered and intricately woven piece to try and digest in an afternoon at the theater.
I was first struck by Shyamalan's study of how his characters cope with the increasingly apparent threat. The no-nonsense son Morgan immediately seeks out a book and a curious and chilling element to this story, a baby monitor. The brother Merrill who has taken a room over the garage to help the family turns to the TV. The youngest, the girl who must be about kindergarten age, believes she is dreaming. It is the father, Graham, who is not coping well living in denial. But who can blame him?
"There is no one out there to help us. We're all alone," our resigned and frockless clergyman declares.
The final scenes are well-constructed to induce fear. Shyamalan masterfully pulls all the pieces together at the end. If you were impressed by Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, you will enjoy this offering... again and again.
An excellent film from theSci-Fi genre.......2007-06-13
This is one of those films that my wife dragged me kicking and screaming to see in the theater, but as has often been the case over our thirty-six year marriage, it turned out to be one that I would end up adding to my collection.
Normally, Science-Fiction films either bore me greatly, or scare me out of my wits, but this story is quite different. Not only is this a well-made, tense and exciting story of an attempted alien invasion of Earth, but it is also a very touching and actually inspirational story. Mel Gibson plays a former minister who totally lost his faith as the result of his wife's tragic death, but eventually finds it once again as a result of an exciting encounter with aliens. Beginning with the appearance of "crop circles" in his corn field, then in other locales around the world, followed soon by other strange "signs," Gibson finds himself trapped by the aliens in his home, with his two small children and his younger brother, played well by Joaquin Phoenix.
If you have not seen the film, do so. If you have not added it to your collection, do so. The climax alone is worth the purchase price, and it is surely a film you can watch with your children.

John Travolta's should've-been-nominated-for-an-Oscar performance is the best reason to see this largely moving work, which is a little reminiscent of the novel Flowers for Algernon (basis for the film Charly). Travolta plays a mechanic who sees a bright light in the sky one night and wakes up the next morning a genius, hungry for knowledge and so smart he figures out national defense secrets in his own living room (and gets in hot water for it). The more interesting drama, however, is not with the government but with the character's longtime neighbors and friends, who come to reject him for being different. Robert Duvall gives a stirring performance as a doctor who has known the hero all his life, and Kyra Sedgwick is very good as an ambivalent love interest. If you missed this one in the theaters, then you haven't seen one of Travolta's best performances since his comeback. The DVD release presents a widescreen image, optional French soundtrack, optional Spanish subtitles, and theatrical trailer. --Tom Keogh

Ultimate crying movie!.......2007-07-12
I have seen this movie at least 20 times and I still bawl at the end. In my personal top five of all time greatest movies. If you are an intellectual person you will appreciate the complexities in the premise. Don't want to say too much and give away the ending, but it's difinitely not what you think!!!
Much, much more than a simple vehicle for Travolta's 15th comeback.......2007-05-21
George Malley (John Travolta) is an affable, easy-going auto mechanic in a sleepy American town. He has become smitten by Lace (Kyra Sedgwick), a ferociously-independent and emotionally guarded single mother who manufacturers chairs in an even more remote location than the town itself. George's bumbling attempts at piquing her interest continually fail, yet he remains optimistic, even after she rebuffs him for his 37th birthday party.
Remonstrated by his long-time friend Nate (Forest Whitaker) that he shouldn't be purchasing his own drinks at his own birthday party, George wanders outside, where he has a most unusual encounter--perhaps even of the "first" and "close" variety. Rendered senseless by the experience, he soon recovers and heads back inside the bar, where his pals continue their celebrations and chuckle as he tells his story. Later that night, George lies awake, pressured thoughts consuming his mind. Suddenly, he bolts out of his useless bed as a surprising illumination enters his brain: he now knows exactly how the darned rabbit keeps getting in his fenced-off garden!
There are so many undercurrent messages socked away in this movie, it is a wonder the director, Jon Turteltaub ("Instinct," "National Treasure"), remembered to film the thing. It is a testament to this director's subtlety that these messages come across as gentle and graceful reminders of life's beauty, rather than as annoying platitudes meant to placate the unwashed masses. A few examples, and I have doubtless missed many: "sometimes remarkable things happen to unremarkable people," "every person's life belongs to a greater whole," "judge not with haste," "information is power," "humans possess near-unlimited potential," and "love can be everything." I tend to view the cramming of acceptable moral precepts down an audience's collective throat--during something meant as entertainment--to be a particularly sad method by which Hollywood demonstrates its humanity; however, this tactic is not being employed here.
*minor spoilers/plot points below*
We are witness to George coming to grips with his new-found powers. His rise in the community from country gentleman to powerful entity is shown clearly through the eyes of the audience, who exhibit very believable reactions: fear, humility, puzzlement, and, that most cursed of double-edged swords, worship. He witnesses friends drifting away, metamorphing into disciples, or being shamed into silence because of their perceived intellectual inadequacy. George becomes slave to these myriad new ideas filling his brain, preventing sleep, self-care, and respite. He involves himself in a cipher "game" on the short-wave radio belonging to Nate, and ultimately provokes very highly-placed unwanted attention, indeed. George wonders why all his newfound abilities help him not at all in his quest to pierce Lace's heart. He invents many rude implements, which yet work spectacularly well in their functions. A seismologist from Berkley, visiting Mr. Malley to verify his ability to "sense" ULF (ultra-low frequency) emissions--which herald the arrival of an earthquake--is swept along on a scavenger hunt of sorts for an extremely sick local boy.
*end minor spoilers/plot points*
There are far, far too many ideas explored in this movie, but it succeeds anyway. Travolta is not fantastically convincing in the beginning; yet he, like George, becomes more and more remarkable (and thus, believable) as the movie progresses. The gentle way he informs Lace that "it's happening," made me want to switch the movie off, so real it seemed. Kyra is absolutely convincing, as always. I fell in love with her character at least five separate times in the movie. Robert Duvall and Forest Whitaker also steal many scenes with their requisite skill. Mr. Duvall's outburst in the pub towards movie's end stunned me into silence. Forest's performance as socially-stunted introvert, incapable of expressing his feelings towards women, was totally on the money. I'm sorry I waited nearly eleven years to see this movie. It touched my mind and my heart by the end--just as Malley's experience touched his, and those of the people he loved. This was a beautiful and worthwhile movie. Sometimes "star-studded" yields something truly memorable: here is that movie.
Phenomenon.......2007-05-09
Another outstanding movie with John Travolta. Such a romance. John stretched for this role and pulled it off with flying colors. His costars were perfect too.
WOW DANG ONE OF THE BEST TV DVD-MOVE FOR SHORE EVER DONE.......2007-05-08
NOW I COULD EASYLY SAY THIS WILL GO DOWN AS ONE OF THE GRATEST MOVE EVER MADE IN THE WORLD THAT IS SO FOR SHORE & THAT IS PUTTING IT LIGHTLY
One of my favorite movies.......2007-04-01
This story this movie touches me in so many ways and
on so many levels. It is a bittersweet but lovingly
told story of the power and magic that is life and death.
It will reach into your heart into your soul and you
will feel the tears in your heart and some may fall
from your eyes. I believe that I can guarantee you
that this movie will be time well spent. Immerse
yourself in this story and feel the magic, the
power of love and life , and the passing of life.
It is definitely worthy of your
movie collection. I recommend this movie to
one and all. May you be blessed for having
watched it.

Customer Reviews:
"Last Mimzy' is delightful for any viewer.......2007-09-04
Despite the fact that this movie only loosely follows the 1943 short story from which it is taken, this is a charming and well-produced movie that any one, children to adults will find entertaining. The DVD offers many options and the movie has a good story line, with some good acting and an unusual ending. I wonder why there was not more 'hype' about this science fiction movie when it came out in the theaters. Great gift for any youngster for birthday or holidays.
The Last Mimzy.......2007-08-24
I enjoyed the movie. It was visually beautiful, and exciting, a great movie for tweens or older. But it was kind of scary for smaller children.
Cute!.......2007-08-23
This movie is quite cute and the special effects are great. It is about two children, one quite gifted, and her brother who becomes gifted, saving the future world.
There are two reasons I gave it a 3: One is because some of the acting is quite poor (not the kids - they are pretty good, especially the little girl). Two, because I think they didn't think out the ending enough (concerning the government officials).
Great kids movie.
Good family movie, great soundtrack, fun.......2007-08-11
I saw this in the theaters and knew I had to buy it when it came out. This story is just a decent family movie that is quite funny at times. It is a new twist on the alice in wonderland theme, with time travel thrust into this new film. The storyline is not that original, kids find something big and hide it, kids change, parents don't believe them or don't know why, they scare a few people, find an ally, parents believe them, and then a big ending. Tried and true for kids films, but there is enough action in this to just make it fun to watch. It really grows on you. Plus, the soundtrack features A new Roger Waters Track "Hello I Love You", not a bad deal. Good for kids 6 and up, with parental guidence of course.
Go mimzy!.......2007-08-09
Hi well to start I love this movie!!! This movie is hard to describe but it's fun the speceal effects are great. Mimzy is very cute and lovable and you can almost feel the love between Emma and Mimzy. But it needs better acting in parts especeally at the end when they send mimzy home- allthough that's one of my favorite parts. Also there are major gaps in the story like how far ahead in the future is mimzy from? (So you know if Emma and Mimzy ever saw each other again.) Or what made the soul of earth's planet sick? Or why was mimzy the the last mimzy the scientist could make? And what happened to Mimzy when she got back to the future? It would be a five star movie if it wasn't for these details. But overall this is a great movie you should watch it. Well gotta go hope this was helpful Brooke.

Product Description
Narrated by P.J. Soles (who played Lynda in the original HALLOWEEN), this documentary examines the legendary horror film and its legacy of more than four sequels. First released in 1978, HALLOWEEN was directed by horror legend John Carpenter and featured Jamie Lee Curtis in a breakthrough performance. HALLOWEEN: 25 YEARS OF TERROR contains interviews with more than 80 people involved in the HALLOWEEN franchise, including Carpenter, Curtis, Clive Barker, and other horror aficionados including Rob Zombie.
Format: DVD MOVIE
Amazon.com
The first quarter century of the Halloween saga, from the 1978 original to 2002's Halloween: Resurrection, is thoroughly tracked in an 83-minute documentary on the subject. The impetus is a Halloween convention held in South Pasadena (site of the original filming), from which a considerable amount of footage is drawn. Let's be clear: this two-disc set is not a reissue of the first Halloween, but a new documentary with mucho extra features.
Halloween: 25 Years Later collects interview footage of many of the original's creators, including director John Carpenter, co-writer/producer Debra Hill, and star Jamie Lee Curtis. The very good-humored co-star P.J. Soles contributes the narration (and figures in the extra goodies shot at the convention). The film marches through the years, providing some fairly interesting behind-the-scenes material: the alternate versions of Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (aka Halloween 6), and the controversy over differing Michael Myers masks in Halloween H2O. Proper due is paid to Carpenter's brilliant first film, but nobody ever really comes out and says how bad most of the sequels were--although studio interference is blamed for the inadequacies of some of the pictures. The doc isn't exactly deep, but there are some decent observations about how the elemental horror of "the Shape" in the first film was contained in the film's style. Horror directors Clive Barker, Rob Zombie, and Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) weigh in as well.
Most of the extras are culled from panel discussions and other interviews made during the convention. They will be absorbing for hardcore fans--and flattering to them, too, since the post-Internet faithful are lavishly credited with giving the series continued life. Sure, it's overkill--do we actually need a 25-minute panel discussion featuring the cast members of Halloween II?--but for anybody devoted to the Halloween franchise who kicked themselves for not getting to the anniversary convention, this will be almost exactly like being there. --Robert Horton

25 years of terror u got it .......2007-09-08
this is prolly one of the best horror movies out there mike myers is veary scary he walks around and kills ppl this is a must by for any horror fans out there
Good review.......2007-09-08
I thought the documentary on Halloween films was pretty good. I had alot of the same thoughts about the movies. I did like seeing Rob Zombie but I hated his new take on Halloween. I cant wait to see himself explain it on dvd when its released. I forgot how bad Myers looked in part 5, which many consider the worst film of the franchise. All in all, its a really good buy if you love the Halloween franchise.
OMGosh!.......2007-07-29
I canNOT STAND reissuing of the same movie over and over and over again!
Get a life and go cut urself!
A FINE TRIBUTE TO THE GENRE..........2007-05-18
This DVD was definitely worth the excruciating wait. With the title floating around for years Anchor Bay took years to release this DVD. When it finally hit store shelves I had mine reserved and it was a good thing because they were all sold out once I got there. I guess that just goes to show how popular this series is.
This is a two DVD set, which I find suitable considering Anchor Bay had years to put this together. It contains interviews, fan footage, a lot of scenes filmed from the "Halloween Returns To Haddonfield" convention from 2003, and my personal favorite...filming locations presented by Sean Clark.
For those who are unaware this in NOT a new Halloween sequel nor is it a newly released version of the classic. It is a documentary on the Halloween film series. So if you are interested in the Halloween franchise or a fan of the genre this is a film that is sure to interest you.
For the truly dedicated fans of the original film who lust after seeing the actual filming locations but are having trouble finding the exact spot on the map I have listed the addresses below for you:
- The Myers House - located at 1000 Mission Street in South Pasadena, California
- Hardware Store - located at 966 Mission Street in South Pasadena, California

Scooby-Doo is making a big comeback with several helpings on TV and new videos. The series' writers are smart enough to mildly spoof themselves, and this movie opens with Scooby, Shaggy, Daphne, Frank, and Velma solving a crime that ends with the now-classic Scooby line, "It's... [insert some administrative minion/angry neighbor/disgruntled relative], only to have the criminal bleat, "And I would've gotten away with it too, if it hadn't been for you kids!" There they meet one of Velma's idols, fright-writer Ben Ravencroft (voiced by an effective Tim Curry). Smitten Velma and gang accept his invitation to his New England hometown festival. When one of Ravencroft's ancestors suddenly swoops down from the supernatural heavens, the gang's on alert. This movie is appropriate for viewers 4 and up (although some of the animated frights may haunt sensitive viewers). It's also for their parents who may have been fans in the series' initial run. The cool and fun soundtrack's catchy tunes include a song performed by the Hex Girls, one of whom is none other than former Go-Go Jane Weidlin. If the theme song's got a country beat, that's because it's sung by Mr. Achy Breaky himself, Billy Ray Cyrus. --N.F. Mendoza

Customer Reviews:
Not your father's Scooby Doo.......2007-09-16
I wish I'd read a few reviews before I watched the movie with my kids. The original Scooby Doo series showed kids that when the lights come on, you see there was really nothing to be afraid of. This movie was a betrayal of that ethos with the inclusion of "real" monsters and magic. The movie starts out great with hip, witty writing and dialogue that riffs on the Scooby legacy in a way that keeps it interesting and humorous for adults. In act two, "Witch's Ghost" flames-out as a kids' movie as it morphs into an animated equivalent of a teen horror flick.
The part of the movie that played like a religious tract/promo for the Wicca was just weird. Adult Scooby fans should watch this so you know I'm not making it up or exaggerating. What's going on over there at Time Warner? It's like Wicca licensed the Scooby Doo characters from them to burnish its image. No matter what your religious beliefs are, it's weird to see a religion endorsed in a major studio commercial kids' movie. If this movie played in theaters it would get a PG-13. It's not for the under 12 crowd. My kids (under 7) didn't really lock in on the Wicca thing, but they were freaked out by the monster turning out to be "real" and deadly--a fairly central guest character gets sucked screaming into the underworld by supernatural forces of evil. I think our pluralistic society would remain more harmonious if Warner Bros. would adhere to the separation of church and Scooby from now on.
This is not Wiccan Propaganda..........2007-05-23
Scooby and the gang help an author look for the diary of his ancestor; he claims she was wrongfully accused of using her magic for evil.
I have read many of the reviews trashing this as Wiccan Propoganda. If it were truly Wiccan Propaganda, then the supernatural element would be out! There might be spells and potions used, but a ghost trapped in a book and a giant turkey would never have been used. The supernatural parts are for entertainment...because portraying real Wicca would be uninteresting--any portrayal of a religion is most likely to be inaccurate...
1. We will never see an accurate story about the history of Islam because any portrayal of Muhammad is punishable by death.
2. "The Da Vinci Code" was attacked as trying to make people question the divintiy of Christ and accusing the Catholic Church of a major cover up--I am Christian; this movie did not make me question Christ's divinity; it reminded me that he was also human. I am Catholic...I have always thought of religion as a form of government, so I would not be surprised if there are some cover ups.
SCOOBY-DOO AND THE WITCH'S GHOST is a story that plays fair. It reveals a truth that exists in all religions...a truth that my research shows Wicca the most willing to accept--there are those who use religion for good and those who use it for evil. Religion is not good or evil within itself--it only has the "power" given to it by the practioner.
If this movie makes one question his Christian faith, then the doubts are more deep-seeded than anything in a SCOOBY-DOO story will ever bring out. If SCOOBY-DOO makes you question your faith, see a priest or a therapist.
Wicca dogma in Scooby Doo???.......2006-11-23
I saw most of this movie with my children; they watching a little afternoon TV while I cleaned. I was pretty surprised to see the content of the Wicca religion, and Wicca songs about Earth Wind and Fire sung by "nice girls" with vampire teeth. They made it sound like, "Oh we are Wicca, there is nothing wrong with that!" Another reviewer mentioned that this would never be tolerated if this movie included dogma from Judaism, Islam or Catholicism. I let them finish watching, because I wanted them to see the whole thing before I explained to them that many people in the world believe that Wicca is a religious venue for witchcraft. I am not sure if they caught the whole idea about Wicca from the movie, but you know, these tiny little minds are like sponges. Next thing you know, my daughter will be casting spells saying, "but mom, I saw it on Scooby Doo!" I agree with another reviewer that it should be clearly stated on this movie that it contains content about Wicca. I only saw it on TV, which I could have turned off. What of those who spent their good money on it and found out later that it includes positive teaching about paganism.
Wicca Propaganda Film - Hello!?!?.......2006-11-02
Not for kids, unless you want to endoctrinate them into wicca.
The ghost is real, not a masked person..........2006-10-13
Ok, from someone who partakes in _NO_ religion at all...so there!
0 spoilers.
This is the oddest Scooby-Doo i've ever seen compared to others. The character animation looks a tad bit more dramatic. The soundtrack and sound samples are much more mastered than other Scooby-Doo's. The plot is very well thought out and takes more than just a drooling smile to follow.
Now i like these elements i have listed so far, but 1 thing as mentioned by everybody else pulled 1 star from it for me...the ghost is real. In case you missed it, i'm not religious at all. However, a real ghost? No matter how many controversial elements one might find in a Scooby-Doo, a mask of some sort should be pulled away at the end (it must be so :-).
Now, for those of you that know something about Mr. Hanna or Mr. Barbera from their interviews, articles, books, etc., they _MIGHT_ of changed the plot so the ghost was not real and that's it. At some point however, for those who go looking hard and long enough, they will find what they are looking for. So the gang finally found it, so be it.
If you have children or a child and you choose not to show it to them, atleast watch it your adult-self. Scooby-Doo is a fantasy cartoon. Scooby-Doo has been portraying reality in it's very own fantasy all these years. It's really great to see the gang share with us, something alot of us consider fantasy, for themselves for a moment. If i wasn't so bent on seeing the mask flying off, i would of gave it a 5. Old habbits die hard :-).

Big Rock Candy Mountain!.......2007-08-10
I remember watching these videos when I was a child, and I hope my children will enjoy them just as much as I did. Especially Big Rock Candy Mountain and Wee Sing In Sillyville. I never knew what these movies were called when I was younger so being able to find it today and remember what they were just by looking at it..brought back tons of wonderful memories.Especially since I go around and ask people if they remember "little bunny foo foo." Now I finally know what movie I was reffering too. :]
"Timeless".......2007-06-27
I'm extremely happy that I purchased Wee Sing's "The Marvelous Musical Mansion". I remember being in elementary school and watching this movie in my music class. Although I was young, I remembered how much I loved the movie and all the unique things in it. Now that I'm older, I can remember how much joy and excitement it brought me to see everything from small music toys magically coming to life, to the musical steps in Uncle Rubato's colorful, one-of-a-kind musical mansion. I highly recommend this movie to parents. I'm sure your child will love this along with many other movies in the "Wee Sing" collection for children. It will truly give them timeless memories.
Wee Sing Musical Mansion.......2007-04-10
This product is a great asset to my elementary school music classes.
Still stuck in my head .......2007-03-21
My daughter watched this video a million times when she was little. Now I am ordering it for younger nieces & nephews. This and "Grandpa's Magical Toys" were everyday staples in our house.
In fact, my daughter is almost old enough to drive now and we still find ourselves singing, "Rootie-toot-toot on the old tin drum... and THAT'S the way you do it!"
Marvelous Musical Mansion is Marvelous!!.......2007-01-19
My three year old daughter has seen this movie many many times in VHS form. She absolutely loves it, and now loves the DVD even more because she can watch it repeatedly without having to wait for it to rewind! My one year old even enjoys watching. It keeps kids entertained with songs, mysteries, and just a lot of fun!

Sooner or later, the Mystery, Inc. gang had to take on Mexico's legendary Bigfoot equivalent, El Chupacabra, and that's precisely what they do in this entertaining, feature-length, Scooby-style investigation into the paranormal. Taking the Mystery Van south of the border, Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and Scooby-Doo celebrate Day of the Dead festivities, which become less festive when a towering, glowering Chupacabra monster turns up to terrify both tourists and locals. The young snoops smell a conspiracy, and as they chase down clues their search for the truth leads them into sundry Mexican antiquities--ancient tombs and temples--where danger increases exponentially. There are the usual rituals: Our time-warped heroes run like the wind during encounters with alleged ghouls--particularly best-buds Shaggy and Scooby, when they aren't stuffing themselves with delicious Scooby Snacks. The animation is slicker and smoother--and more pleasing--than some other, recent Scooby-Doo features. --Tom Keogh
Description
New direct-to-video feature length movie. Scooby-Doo and the gang visit a friend in Mexico to celebrate the Day of the Dead (Mexico's version of Halloween). Unfortunately, a monster appears and begins terrorizing the town.

Scooby So-So.......2007-08-12
My 4 yr old is in love with Scooby, so we own practically every DVD. He did enjoy watching it, but he hasn't picked it out as his favorite.
RENT THIS MOVIE.......2007-04-15
I love scooby so a wise word of advice: RENT THIS MOVIE. You will fall in love with it for a while and then never watch it again. I still love this movie but i can tell that most people would get bored after a little.
A Decent Reunion At Best .......2005-04-19
The best way to begin is to show you where I stand. I think "Zombie Island" and "The Witch's Ghost" were excellent. I didn't much care for "Alien Invasion" or "Cyber Chase." I thought "The Legend of the Vampire" was a surprisingly good return to form. Onto chapter six. I can't really say this is one of Scooby's better movies. It kind of lacks the punch and surprises of "Zombie Island" and "The Witch's Ghost." Instead of the scarey surprises seen in the first two movies, this 6th chapter seems to rely more on silly chases. (But if you like the original episodes, you probably won't mind that so much.) Also, in my opinion, the script is weaker which means the movie seems very long and drawn out. ("Zombie Island" and "Witch's Ghost" don't seem to have many dull moments at all.) And, I won't say too much here, but when the mystery is uncovered and you really didn't get to know the culprit in the first place, a certain edge is missing. (In "Zombie Island" and "Witch's Ghost," we got to know the culprits very well in the 1st half of the movie, and therefore, there was a scarey sense of recognition when the plots were uncovered. The main reason I can give to watch this movie is that it was at least nice to the original line up from the early cartoons (Casey Kasem-Shaggy, Frank Welker-Fred, Heather North-Daphne, and Nicole Jaffee-Velmah) together again. The movie is worth some interest, but it's more of a long episode. If you like Scooby, this movie is watchable. But, don't expect the terror, intensity, and suspense of "Zombie Island," "The Witch's Ghost," or even "Legend of the Vampire."
Seething mad at this film..........2005-01-24
Following a torrent of scooby movies to be released on video and DVD comes "Scooby-Doo an the Monster of Mexico," a film that highlights the legend of El Chupacabre, the Mexican Bigfoot. All the same, the Legend of the Vampire totally insulted the vampire myth, and so I didn't expect this new one to be any different. For that reason, I waited until it was being played on the cartoon network before watching...
Scooby-Doo and the Monster of Mexico
Here's how it ranked...
Sound: 3.5/5
Like Legend of the Vampire, this movie used a lot of the songs from the original series, and a few new ones, but unlike Legend of the Vampire, the original songs in this series were stereotypical to the point of being annoying. Hence the additional half-point down from that film.
Graphics: 3/5
The same grade that I gave the graphics in "Legend of the Vampire" and for the same reasons. This movie uses graphics that were just not as good as they could, or logically should have been, and were barely even better than those seen in the original series.
Story Concept: 3/5
Slightly less cheesy than the concept in Legend of the Vampire, but no less cynical towards the supernatural. Scooby and the gang visit Mexico for no real reason except to be in time for a mexican halloween, where they encounter El Chupacabre, and find out that there's a plot brewing. But as in the last movie, and the series, there were no real monsters. This creature was really just some woman in an animatronic suit. That was annoying, and I'm glad I didn't spend any money on it for that reason alone.
Story Presentation: 3/5
Similar to Legend of the Vampire in presentation, cause and resolution, except that the pleasing scenes of Daphne and Velma hanging out as they did in that movie were dropped in favor of scenes of the entire gang as stereotypical (and somewhat insulting) mexican tourists. Like in Legend of the Vampire, there is no real monster, but to make things even worse, Velma makes some comments near the end about monster stories that really cheezed me off. Her acts of superhuman strength in mid-movie were balanced off by the fact that they spent that whole section of the film getting chased my monstrous stone statues and tourists; a part which had nothing to do with the rest of the movie, and was seemingly added just to extent the length. The words of many of the bit-part characters got on my nerves too. I simply found the movie distasteful. Yes, it's scooby, and like Legend of the Vampire, it's funny scooby material, but it was presented too much like an episode of the series, and not enough like something worth making a movie over.
Acting: 5/5
Perfect grade here, because who plays Velma, Shaggy, Daphne and Freddy like their original voice actors? Like in Legend of the Vampire, the original actors returned, but again, it's a shame they had to pick a film like this to lend their voices to.
All in All: 3.5/5
I enjoyed this movie more than alien invaders, but less than Legend of the Vampire, because honestly, Legend of the Vampire at least had A LITTLE nostalgia to it and didn't go overboard into cheesy behavior and unforgivable puns like this movie does. However, this movie had no thrills at all, and was really just a silly little romp through a country which was, at best, a caricature of a real one. Frankly, I wanted more from Scooby, but it would be a lie to say I had EXPECTED more. This film is most comparable to Legend of the Vampire in general mood, pace and result, but it's sillier and less respectful, so if that's your cup of tea, have a ball. Otherwise, you may join me in a boycott of this movie. Toodles.
Scooby-Doo is a child's video hero........2004-05-03
I, for one, am glad that they keep making Scooby-Doo movies. The old stuff is still fun to watch and the new ones are great for me and my nearly 3 year old son. I have to admit though, El Chupacabra from this movie and the ghosts from The Boo Brothers is scary for my son to watch at nighttime so I don't offer it as a choice at night. In this day and age of foul mouths and violence on TV, I am glad to offer Scooby-Doo as a choice for my son.
