This 1988 effort at creating a milestone coming-of-age story with the impact of The Graduate is commendable, but the results are mostly shaky and garish. Tom Cruise plays an ambitious young man who arrives in New York City and becomes known as a flashy bartender in a hot club. After falling for Elisabeth Shue's girl-next-door character, however, his desire for success causes him to travel down a more selfish path with an older woman. The film, directed by Roger Donaldson (Bounty), is built on entirely on appearances (Cruise's star charisma) and flash (the way Cruise and his character's bartending mentor, played by Bryan Brown, toss bottles of booze around). The more interesting and underlying themes, however, particularly the hero's obvious Oedipal dilemmas, are lost beneath this window dressing, as if everyone involved was afraid to commit to the story's intrinsic value. Cruise fans might want to take a look at this, but otherwise there isn't much to recommend it. --Tom Keogh

We're truly awed by Tom Cruise. Is there anything he can't do? We gasped when he showed that he could dance in his underwear in Risky Business; then he mastered sitting inside a jet for Top Gun; then he mastered sitting in a wheelchair for Born on the Fourth of July. These triumphs, however, pale next to Cocktail: Cruise single-handedly breathes life back into that long-dead genre, Elvis Presley movies.

Opening in tried-and-true Presley fashion, Cruise -- fresh out of the service -- has those G.I. blues till he decides to follow that dream and go into the family business, tending bar. Despite his lack of training, studly bartender Bryan Brown wants to hire Cruise anyway. "The waitresses hate me," notes Cruise, but Brown says "Wait till you've given them crabs -- then you'll really know hatred. Stick with me -- I'll make you a star." Sure enough, all the gilrs! girls! girls! In Manhattan are soon crowding in to watch these two juggle bottles while they shake their booties and, if Cruise cannot exactly sing like The King, he does a mean lip-synch. In no time, the duo is hired to work at the chic Cell Block (where the staff wear jailhouse rock duds), and Cruise stands atop the bar to deliver a poem that will surely be included among the film clips when he eventually receives his American Film Institute Lifetime Achievement Award: "America you're just devoted / To every flavor I've got / But if you want to get loaded / Why don't you just order a shot?"

Brown steals away Cruise's gal, Gina Gershon, by calling her "an assembly-line hump" so Cruise hightails it to paradise, Hawaiian style (okay, so it's Jamaica) where he becomes an island resort bartender. Apparently having started watching the rushes, Cruise says to Elizabeth Shue, "My worthless, useless services are at your disposal." Shue, like the audience, knows that Cruise has got real value (if only he'd take off his shirt, show off his torso, and smile more!) So she gets him to frolic under a waterfall and make love on the beach.

But Cruise's head is turned by wealthy Lisa Banes, who takes him back to New York as her paid gigolo, which we know is a bad thing because she covers Cruise back up in fancy designer suits and, even worse, makes him attend a cocktail party where her friends say, "Heel, boy. heel. You haven't got this one party broken yet, have you?" Cruise undergoes a change of habit, leaves the kept life behind, and looks up Shue, who's pregnant -- and a zillionairess to boot.

At their wedding, Cruise says, "You're probably going to want to divorce me in three weeks." and Shue agrees, "Probably" -- but the movie quickly ends before their prophecies come true.

I bought this DVD out of curiosity and I like a nice drink now and again! I absolutely loved watching it and learn allot about the art of bartending besides some fun drinks to make! I just bought another one for my daughter, she loves to bartend whenever she has a party and I know she will get great ideas from this DVD! Eero is great in front of the camera and gives so many useful tips and info for anyone wanting to bartend or just wanting to have a party with great drinks! A fast,informative,fun DVD. The 90 minute bartending video was much more interesting and fun to watch than your typical training video. Instead of one instructor droning on, this video cut back and forth between a knowledgable host and other charismatic bartenders. They all offered useful and insightful tips.

This video is packed full of information, but it is well organized, so it dosen't get overwhelming.

I wasn't looking for a bartending job, just some tips on how to serve stylish, unique drinks at my own parties. This video delivered that and more. It will now be more fun to be a customer at my favorite bars, knowing more about the drinks and what to ask for.

Enjoyable video for the novice drink/cocktail mixer.......2007-09-07

Great video. Fun to watch. You can select your desired concoction from the DVD menu or watch them all straight through. My only complaint is that when you play the video straight through it plays alphabetically instead of as they were recorded, so the bartender sometimes refers back to something he did in an earlier video that you haven't even watched yet. This is a VERY minor drawback so don't let it sway your decision to buy. I really like this DVD. The set and color are matched with a likable bartender that explains things very simply. Get it! You'll like it! :)

The viewing of this DVD has expanded my knowledge behind the bar,
and has sharpened my skills to become voted the "Best of the Best
Bartender" for 2001 and 2002. Kyle really shows you in a non-intimidating way how to make these cocktails with ease and confidence, and the bonus features are awesome. Not only should every bartender have one, but every party giver should own one as well. Check it out . . . This is more than 5 stars.

All I ever wanted....And more..........2002-03-15

I was always looking for away, to make any party I would have better... As for the drinks I would always strike out.. I had no idea on how to put together, or the proper way a drink should be displayed... (glass, etc..) And by having the "SUMMER QUENCHERS DVD" I was able to get all of the answers I needed.. I was always curios about drink mixing. I would find my self looking in books, and hanging out at bars to find out what was the "NEW THING" at any giving date. So by having this DVD... It allows me to go back in time for drinks, and also gives me the flexability to get familiar with the most modern and unique drinks that are out there.. Some of which I had no idea even existed... So I do suggest to anyone who has been looking for all of the answers on drink mixing, this DVD...

Great DVD, carefully explains drink making, ingredients etc. Even shows experienced bartenders the proper way to mix with some great new recipes. I reccomend this as a learning tool for all hotels, bars and home enthusiasts as a way to impress your customers and friends.
