This three-disc set, part of Warner's Essential Classics series, collects three truly classic films--The Music Man, Meet Me in St. Louis, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers--in one inexpensive package. The drawback is you don't get the second disc of either Meet Me in St. Louis or Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, so if you're a featurette junky or if you simply have to see the reshot version of Seven Brides, you'll want to stick with the individual releases. But this set does include the commentary tracks and any other material that was on the first disc of those two-disc sets (The Music Man still has everything that was on the one-disc release), and best of all, they have the great remastered pictures of the previous releases. So if you just want the movies looking better than ever with some bonus features thrown in for good measure, the price per movie makes this set an attractive bargain. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:
Great Set.......2007-08-12
I thoroughly enjoyed this collectors edition of some of my favorite musicals. The Picture color and clarity were unsurpassed. They will bring hours of enjoyment as I watch them in the future.
Great Musicals!.......2007-08-04
Enjoy having the DVD of Meet me in ST Louis, Music Man, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Have loved these musicals for years and am glad to have them in my DVD collection. Movies turned out new and in great condition!
American Classics.......2007-07-26
These three movie musicals are classic representations of a true American art form - the musical. All three feature timeless performances of great american actors and actresses. Any complete movie collection should have these three and what better way to buy than as one package. Granted there are very few extras but how often are those watched, for me rarely.
Great Musicals at a fabulous price!.......2007-05-14
While this set doesn't include all the extra material dvd's at this price it's still well worth it for these great musicals. They are indeed classics as the title states. My favorites would be "Meet Me in St. Loius" and "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers". Not very found of "The Music Man" but the package is still cheaper than what I would pay individually. The movies speak for themselves.

Actor-turned-director Edward James Olmos set out to spread the word against the destructiveness of gang violence with this 1992 gritty drama. Set in the barrios of East Los Angeles, he attempts to cover 30 years in the life of a family with strong gang ties. This brutally realistic story may not intentionally glorify violence, but it offers no answers. (Olmos actually shot the prison scenes in Folsom, which explains their harsh reality.) Great performances though, especially by Olmos and William Forsythe. Olmos plays a gang leader released from prison who is finally in touch with himself, only to realize it is too late. The one major problem with this well-intentioned flick is that it is rated R for violence, nudity, and profanity. Therefore, the kids who most need its message are not, in theory, the ones who will see it. --Rochelle O'Gorman
Customer Reviews:
OMG!!.......2007-06-12
This movie gave me nightmares for a week. Seriously, I felt physically ill while watching this movie. It's been a long time since I saw a movie this graphic in nature. Frankly, it's not for the squeamish or overly sensitive crowd. With that being said, it's a typical prison drama. You pretty much have the usual rape, death by shankings, and rioting scenes. To this day, I have never seen a prison movie that ended on a good note, and I certainly can't remember anything good about this one either. This movie was just sad and depressing from start to finish. Edward James Olmos plays a youth who's life is a downward spiral soon as he's sent to a youth detention center. Of course, he's raped there by another male youth (which he kills). From there, he gains respect, but he also gains a sure ticket into prison as soon as he turns 18. This movie is sad because even after he gets out of prison he can't seem to make it on the outside or blend into society because he's been locked away for so long, and he still has that prison mentality. Ultimately that leads to his demise. That's pretty much what this movie is about..nothing real impressive! I do think what pushes it over the edge is the brutality of the rape scenes. I must admit watching a man being tied down and gang raped by 4 inmates was enough to haunt me for a while. Especially, the fact that they were sick enough to enjoy this at the same time, and be so kind as to use KY Jelly first. What happens after that I won't even mention. This movie is not for kids at all. However, I do suggest that it be shown to all teens and pre-teens who think their so tough, and that jail is a place they truely want to be. I think that after they see this it might change quite a few minds.
Eye-opener.......2007-05-26
I actually saw this film in my criminal justice class. It's a very disturbing but realistic film. You can tell, a lot of research was put into its development. This story does not trash anyone, it just tells a very true account of prison life and the development of the original prison gang.
Fue chida.......2007-04-27
I felt sick watching American Me, but then I appreciated more and more as I constantly continued to watch it again. I recommend sensitive people NOT to watch it. Any vato from the Barrio should relate to this material. Cuz I did. :)
American Me.......2007-04-01
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Hard hitting, graphic and an eye opener to the inner workings of prison and gang life. Great companion to Blood in Blood out (Bound By Honor.)
Very Disturbing.......2007-03-17
My husband and I were disturbed for weeks by the graphic content of some scenes. Definitely not for young people. It was very scary to think gangs have so much influence and power. It does make you want to stop and do whatever necessary to prevent gang activity, especially in young people. We need to do more to educate these young victims.

A great star and a great composer can make a Broadway musical into a smash, as Ethel Merman and Irving Berlin proved with Call Me Madam. Not a bad place to start with a movie, either, and the 1953 film of the show has both Merman and Berlin represented in brassy fashion. Granted, Merman's platinum-throated talents were best suited to the stage, and the production overall has that dutiful, stodgy tone of so many Fox musicals. Extra points for the suavity of George Sanders (he's Merman's love interest in tiny Lichtenburg, where the lady has been appointed U.S. ambassador), and for the dancing of Vera-Ellen and Donald O'Connor. A year after crashing through the wall in Singin' in the Rain, O'Connor has a similar solo athletic workout to "What Chance Have I with Love." High point: Merman and O'Connor trading verses on "You're Just in Love," the best tune in a bouncy score. --Robert Horton
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful nostalgia trip.......2006-08-12
I originally saw this movie when I was 10 years old and over the years remembered the wonderful dancing and songs. I was disappointed that it never seemed to turn up on TV and was delighted to be able to buy my own copy. When I saw it again recently it was even better than I had remembered it. Donald O'Connor's partnership with Vera-Ellen is enchanting - I've watched their dances over and over. And Ethel Merman lights up the screen every time she is on - her interpretation of the memorable Berlin songs, whether belted out or sweetly romantic - is, I believe, unbeatable. I now want to get all the other Merman movies. And what a shame that George Sanders' deep, rich baritone wasn't more widely heard.
A Great Hit.......2006-07-05
Call Me Madame is a wonderful spoof on diplomatic practice. I intend to show part of it to my undergrad course in diplomacy at Georgetown University to demonstrate to the students how ambassadors should not conduct themselves.
Call Me Madam 1953.......2006-04-26
Brassy , belt-it-out Broadway Legend Ethel Mermann (1908-1984) , delivers a singularly show-stopping version performance in this beloved big-screen version of Irving Berlin (1888-1989) last big Musical comedy Success . It?s the story of a Washington D.C. socialite who becomes a U.S. Ambassador and finds Romance along the Way . Filled with Colorfully tuneful Berlin favorite like "The Hostess With The Mostes" and "You?re just in Love " And unforgettable dance sequences by Donald O?Connor (1925-2003) and lovely Vera-Ellen (1921-1981) CALL ME MADAM is Hollywood musical magic ! . High Quality digital transfer . Reccomended
call me madam.......2006-03-09
It is wonderful to view this excellent dvd of such an excellent
film.
Now the miraculous acting and singing of the great Ethel Merman as well as of all the cast can be fully appreciated
Call Me Madam.......2006-02-28
Call me Madam is an entertaining musical with songs you'll find yourself humming or sining around the house or while driving a car.

Description
He had all the right moves to put the ball away...until the cops put him awayfor good. UCLA All-American and NBA Rookie Of The Year Keith Wilkes and Academy AwardÂ(r)* and Golden Globe** nominee Laurence Fishburne III give spectacular debut performances in this "touching...sensitive and gripping movie" (Cue) that's "guaranteed to take your emotions for a reckless ride" (L.A. Herald-Examiner)! Step into the court with Cornbread, Earl And Me...you'll be glad you did. Wilkes is "Cornbread," a promising high school basketballer who has what it takes to shoot himself right out of the ghetto...until two cops mistake him for a rapist and gun him down in cold blood. But when the police attempt to cover up their mistake, strong-arming the community into silence with threats of jail time and violence, it's up to Cornbread's 11-year-old brother Wilford (Fishburne) and his pal Earl (Tierre Turner) to find the courage to speak the truth and clear Cornbread's name. *1993: Supporting Actor, What's Love Got to Do With It **1995: Actor, "The Tuskegee Airmen"
Customer Reviews:
still banging.......2007-03-20
The movie was excellent. The best thing I liked about my purchase was that I got it in less than a week. I was able to give it to my mother who has found Amazon to be a great place to buy all the old movies she use to watch as a child.
Compelling.......2007-01-29
Great movie for the entire family. Lots of good moral and character lessons on this flick. It's not about race. It's about doing the right thing and standing up for the truth.
Cornbread Earl and Me.......2005-06-10
Way back then, when I was a child growing up in Guyana, South America, I saw this movie on big screen. It touched an entire audience that night and I am happy to have seen it on Amazon.com. I am now lucky to be able to buy it because I have often thought about this movie, about the nice kid whom everyone called Cornbread. I remember both him and his basketball which was replaced that fatal day with a bottle of soda pop when he was shot. I can never forget this story, because it is indelibly encraved into my mind and I turned out pretty good, now living here in America. These movies are the real classics of all times, only...no one every says so! I rate this movie a classic and I am sorry Amazon.com. I love you but you don't have a buttom to rate a true classic of our time!
"One of the Best movies out there.......2005-05-16
One of the most shining examples out there of the blackploitation era is this film; You have a dilemma, and you have a solution. A young brother just about to go to college on a basketball scholarship was killed by the cops thinking that he was a suspect; All the witnesses of the crime get intimidated with the exception of one young brother played courageously by Laurence Fishburne, who tells the story just like it is even after he and his mother were intimidated by the prosecution. Most of the witnesses were intimidated and denied what actually happened. But Fishburne's character unbought and unbossed told Cornbread's story simply and saved the day;If you ever want to see a film and come across a situation that needs clarifying, THIS is the film to see;
Superb !!!!!!.......2003-10-23
I remember when I had saw this movie when I was a little girl and I had saw it on BET last year this is a great movie it is sad but it is still good I enjoyed this movie and I would recommend anyone who enjoys blaxploitation movies would enjoy this movie this is a great film about a little boy and his friend Cornbread he was a great basketball player and he had just recieved a scholarship to go to a college to play basketball and had dreams of becoming a pro- basketball player and one day a white cop accidentally shoots him and he dies and a big contorversy stirs in this small towm and causes havoc and trouble for everyone and really takes a toll on his friend and
makes it hard for him to cope with his loss but eventually things get better and then he goes on with his life but he never forget about his friend "Cornbread" . This is a touching heartwarming film that would make you just want to cry so therefore when you watch this movie be sure to have some tissue on hand. I would recommend anyone who is fond of dramas to purchse this video!!!!

Customer Reviews:
All the bonus items here.......2005-07-08
Despite what the previous reviewer said, I own this DVD and it has all the extra features (Now and Then, Liberty News, Biographies, etc., etc.) included as bonus DVD features in a seperate listing - not in the body of the tv episodes themselves. Since the previous reviewer didn't see them their, he assumed they were taken out of the DVD & he got cheated. This is not true. I watched the bonuses myself today.
I love the series.......2005-06-07
the cartoons keep my kids and my wife and I always interested. It is a good way for kids to learn about our nations history, while having some fun. I just wish they would release the whole series.
FABULOUS Show...............2004-09-08
.....but the DVD collections turned out to be horribly disappointing. My rating is not directed at the show. It is directed at the DVD series itself. Someone really dropped the ball on what could have been a fabulous dvd collection.
So far there are Volumes 1, 2 & 3. Each volume includes five "playing cards" of George Washington, Phyllis Wheatly, Abigail Adams, John Paul Jones & Ben Franklin. This is a fabulous idea..BUT the problem is that the five playing cards are all the same in each volume. So now my daughter has three sets of the same cards. This makes absolutely no sense...
As far as the episodes, each DVD Volume includes three episode but the episodes are not set up the way they are on television. The episodes cut out the "Liberty News", "Now & Then" & "Continental Cartoons". Not having them including in each episode takes away from the show. Instead of having them in the show the way they should be, they are included as bonus features.....And the Continental Cartoons segment where you "Guess This Person". You have to use the DVD remote to access the three clues....But the problem I am having is this "game" doesn't work correctly and out of the three clues, I can only access the first one. Leaving the other two clues inaccessible.....?
VOLUME 1 - The Boston Tea Party (The Movie)
This DVD included episodes The Boston Tea Party, The Intolerable Act & Shot Heard Round the World. There is no "closing credits" to the first episode, no "intro & closing credits" to the second episode and no "intro" to the third episode. All three episodes run together like a "movie". And of course do not include the Continental Cartoons, Liberty News & Now & Then.
VOLUME 2 - Give Me Liberty
This DVD includes episodes Liberty or Death, Common Sense & Not Yet Begun To Fight. These episodes were not set up like a "movie" such as the first volume. And each episode actually has the introduction and closing credits for all three episodes. But or course it lacks the Continental Cartoons, Liberty News & Now & Then.
VOLUME 3 - The First Fourth of July
This dvd includes The First Fourth of July, New York, New York & One Life To Live. All episodes are set up the same way as Volume 2. But the problem with Volume 3 is that somewhere between Volume 2 & Volume 3, other Liberty's Kids episodes are missing. I have no idea how many they skipped going from Volume 2 to Volume 3. That BIG flaw prompted me to write a review of this DVD collection...For Shame DIC. The Liberty's Kids series deserves far better then what you have done with it in the DVD collection...
General Mills cerel came with a free DVD of two Liberty's Kids episodes. The Midnight Ride & The Turtle. BOTH of these episodes were issued on the DVD the way that they were televised on TV. Both episodes had the Continental Cartoons, Liberty's News & Now & Then. Which should have been the case with these volumes but was not. Where is the COMMON SENSE DIC.
Description
You See Me Laughin' is a full length documentary that takes a look at the often untamed lifestyles of the last great North Mississippi bluesmen and the Oxford, MS based label- Fat Possum Records- that struggles to record them. The film is an exciting collage of exclusive interviews, live performances and personal anecdotes. It includes rare, black and white footage of RL Burnside from 1974, disturbingly funny stories about touring told first hand by Iggy Pop and John Spencer Blues Explosion as well as an interesting encounter with Junior Kimbrough described by Bono from U2 and much more. This is not for the faint of heart.
Customer Reviews:
It's all here.......2007-09-13
It took a long time to arrive but was well worth the wait. All the classic bluesmen are included and some I had never heard of. The vintage clips are classics. I liked tracing the originis of the blues to what we listen to now. This production is very well edited and watching it once isn't enough.
Want To Know Where Your Music Comes From?.......2007-03-28
Rock and Roll is the prototypal American music. Maybe Jazz was at one time, but it's Rock now, and has been for the last 50 years. Where did rock come from? A smattering of Jazz may have been involved, but Rock mainly arose from the atomic explosion that was black Mississippi delta blues traveling North, and running smack dab into white Appalachian hillbilly music travelling West. The mushroom cloud rose over Memphis, and on top of it sat the teenaged Elvis Presley. But what was Elvis listening to? Where did he get his raw material?
One of the two sources is on this DVD. Like an archeaological expedition, the filmmakers unearth an untouched civilization: Mississippi hill country blues in an amazing, extant form: THIS is the music, the sounds that travelled North, that reverberated 50 years ago out of the Delta to catch the imaginations of young people all over the world - everyone from the aforementioned Mr. Presley to the Beatles and the Rolling Stones on the other side of the pond. They recycled it, and sent it back to us. This is ground zero for Rock. Just as an embryo mutates, develops, and finally morphs into something quite unrecognizable from its original form, so has Rock moved many varied distances from its roots. But roots there are, and this is about as close as you're going to get without reading about it in some "History of Rock" book. This IS the history. Enjoy.

I bought this based on the 3 positive reviews and I was not disappointed. I highly recommend this dvd. Great music and very interesting character studies. Five stars with no reservation IMHO.

Last of a dying breed.......2005-08-07
This is the real deal...back-porch players in their own delta environment who don't give a tinker's damn about anything but playing their music, drinkin', and enjoying what's left of thier time on earth. Their sensibility is miles away from the music business as we know it, and thank God for it because most people are completely oblivious to southern blues musician mindset and would probably never have a chance to "get it" otherwise because most of these players are truly a dying breed.
This film captures the heart and spirit of real African-American bluesmen who are still poor after being semi-famous for years...and they really couldn't care less. R. L. Burnside in particular has been releasing albums and playing around for years, been reviewed and celebrated in all the best rock and indie-alternative press, and still lives like any poor, black rural working man. These guys don't care about fancy boutique amps and expensive "guitar show" instruments. They make all the sound they need from a typical hodge-podge of beat up pawn shop instruments, playing in some cases with simple buttern knives when their hands no longer work.
If you understand the connection that the ancient African music traditions have to roots American music, look no further than this movie as an example of how it was preserved and passed on in the new world to this present day. This film may be one of the last testaments to a culture that will surely disappear soon in this 21st century.

The story of Marcus Garvey, a controversial African American leader of the early 20th century, is thoughtfully told in this documentary, an installment in the American Experience series on PBS. Garvey, who was born in Jamaica, learned the printer's trade as a teenager, and his ability to express himself in print helped him become an advocate for black rights in his homeland. He formed the Universal Negro Improvement Association, but a financial scandal forced him to flee to New York. Before long he organized the UNIA in America, and his organization began an amazing chapter in American race relations. Garvey, after choosing the unlikely role model of evangelist Billy Sunday, became a great orator and enlisted many thousands of African Americans in his movement. Elderly people recall attending Garvey's rallies and parades with their parents 80 years ago, providing touching and fascinating insights. Newsreel footage shows Garvey, who took to wearing grandiose costumes in public, as well as the fervent crowds who flocked to him. Before long the federal government was seeking to destroy Garvey, and an obscure young Justice Department attorney named J. Edgar Hoover was writing reports denouncing him as a "notorious Negro agitator." A mail fraud charge led to Garvey's imprisonment and eventual exile in England. This intelligent film shows how Garvey, though always a controversial figure, was an important precursor to the American civil rights movement. --Robert J. McNamara
Description
Visionary yet enigmatic, brilliant yet manipulative, Marcus Garvey is one of the most controversial figures in American history. Both a powerful orator and a pompous autocrat, Garvey inspired the loyalty of millions of African-Americans while infuriating many black leaders. He was a strong advocate of black self-help, yet was willing to collaborate with the Ku Klux Klan. He inspired African-Americans to support his economic enterprises, then lost their hard-earned money through mismanagement. This film uses a wealth of archival footage, photographs and documents to uncover the story of this Jamaican immigrant who between 1916 and 1921 built what was the largest black mass movement in world history.

Should be required viewing in any class of black history.......2006-01-03
Marcus Garvey was a black immigrant from Jamaica who was very much a child of his times, yet was very much ahead of his time. In only a few years, (1916 - 1921), he built the largest black mass movement in history. International in scope, his Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) organization gave black people a sense of pride, as one who witnessed it says on the tape, "I felt like I owned half the world and didn't want the other half." He modeled his movement on the structure of a nation, with their own flag, anthem and governmental officials, including a foreign minister.
His policies of aggressively competing with whites and not being passive when blacks were slighted brought him to the attention of J. Edgar Hoover and the animosity of other black leaders. However, two things fundamentally destroyed him. The first was his autocratic style of leadership, he tolerated no dissent or opinions contrary to his own. The second was his inability to manage money or even hire others who could. He sought and received an enormous amount of investment money from blacks, but time and time again most of it was wasted.
Marcus Garvey is arguably the most interesting person of the twentieth century that few people learn about. He raised millions of dollars and had hundreds of thousands of followers, and yet his movement expired in only a few years. I have studied history for years and had only a superficial knowledge of his name and his movement. In hearing the testimony of the people who were part of the movement, it was clear that Garvey was truly an accomplished leader. The people still speak of him with reverence and respect, even decades after witnessing the events. This tape should be required viewing in any class that covers black history.

I thought it was pretty good myself.......2003-12-31
I am a historian by profession. I did my senior thesis on the Garvey movement during my college days.
Overall, I thought this was an excellent documentary. The DVD is particularly good as it expounds upon things like Malcolm X's parents' role in the Garvey movement, J. Edgar Hoover's vendetta against Garvey, and it contains two complete speeches from Garvey recorded in 1921, the latter of which states the goals of his UNIA.
As for the controversy, one should not expect a serious documentary aimed for adults to show a historical figure as an idealized, angelic being with no human flaws. Let's face it, Garvey had his faults and this documentary deals with that. But it also makes it clear that Garvey made a positive impact on many people from the testimonies of people who actually remembered the Garvey movement. Incidentally, in response to one of the previous posters, this DVD DID mention that Garvey created the Red, Black and Green flag.
Next to reading "Black Moses" or "The Philosophy of Marcus Garvey," this is a good introduction for anyone who wants to learn about Marcus Garvey. See this, read Garvey's own writings, and judge for yourself.
-1 stars = Not the best "American Experience".......2003-12-27
Usually, American Experience can counted on to present intensely fact-based documentaries. This one does not fit the ususal mode of American Experience product. Apparently, Frankthek didn't read the other reviews. One is from Julius Garvey, MD son of Marcus Garvey. That review led me to realize that there was more to the story. I went and did my own research. It seems that there is a great deal of bias in the documentary. The documentary doesn't begin where Garvey's life begins and it doesn't end where it ends. But it seems to want to impress upon you that it does. Nowhere are there facts presented for the viewer to make their own determination. That's why i watch American experience so much. Normally they present the facts, without so much as a critique. In my own research I confirmed some of what Dr. Garvey says in his review. The fraud trial originally ended in a hung jury, a fact left out of the documentary. Garvey met up with an expert elocutionist in Henrietta Vinton Davis, who may have been more influential on him than Billy Sunday. Garvey's second wife, Amy Jacques Garvey was from a well-to-do Jamaican family. Garvey finished his days in London, England; a plaque marks the house where he lived. He was interred in a crypt in England; and his body was brought back to Jamaica in the 60's. This was a very significant time in world history. Africa was getting its independence, the civil rights movement was taking off. Martin Luther King even laid a wreath at Garvey's mausoleum during a vacation in Jamaica. I watched this with a few other people and the consensus was the same. It is not the usual standard for American Experience. So many contradictory statements and so little facts. If anything this documentary will inspire others to go do their own research to get the real facts like I did.
Fine and Factual Documentary.......2003-11-10
I wish folks would use these pages to REVIEW material and not to further their apparent agendas. 'A Viewer', who is very clear in his/her agenda, saw fit to post five separate diatribes against this film. Apparently 'A Viewer felt that there were some relationships and/or situations which were not adequately covered by the documentary. 'A Viewer', however, makes no reference to any substantiation to any of his/her claims, and so one can do no more than dismiss them.
PBS has always been pretty clear in its political leanings and if they were going to slant this film, and I don't claim in this review that they do, they would certainly have slanted it in the direction opposite that to which 'A Viewer' claims they have slanted it. And I believe they deserve credit for the fact that they chose 'American Experience' to shine a light on someone other than Malcolm X, Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks.
The bottom line is, if you're interested in one of history's lesser known black figures, you will find this documentary fascinating. Normally, I would have only given it 3 or 4 stars, but I feel compelled to counteract the damage 'A Viewer' has done by posting 5 reviews - each with only 1 star.
Description
In what The Hollywood Reporter calls "a brilliant debut", award-winning actor Edward James Olmos sets the screen ablaze with his directorial bow - a powerful, stunning examination of a Latino crime lord, set against a backdrop of prejudice and hopelessness. Olmos stars as Santana, a youth from the streets of East Los Angeles who becomes the leader of the Mexican Mafia behind the gates of Folsom Prison. With his two childhood friends, Santana rules the prison with an iron fist, continuing a vicious cycle from which there is no escape. After serving his sentence, Santana is back on the streets for the first time since his teenage years. But he learns life on the outside is as rough as it is behind bars. For the harsh reality of barrio life and his blood-stained past will not give Santana the chance to turn his back on his former way of life. With a vehement anti-drug and anti-gang theme, American Me is an explosive and unforgettable epic.

Why Lenzi Why?????.......2007-01-01
This movie shows us Lenzi at his weakest, considering it was done by Lenzi I thought this movie was going to be alot better, but I was mistaken. I found myself fast forwarding through the whole movie. I do not know how this get's classified as a Cannibal movie, it is far from it. If your a Lenzi fan and your on the fence about purchasing this film, do not do it the movie is not what you think it is. The only good this about this movie is seeing Me Me Lai naked, and that is the only reason I gave this movie 1 star.
Cult classic for sure.......2006-07-15
Wow I can't believe this movie got two reviews. It's an incredible beautifully shot and directed film by Umberto Lenzi.
The other reviews I don't understand at all what the heck they were expecting maybe "Cannibal Holocuast". An excellent movie about a man whose life changes and how he adapts himself to a dramatic situation. This is the type of movie that shows how man will do anything to survive once he lives in a world that doesn't take order from the outside world.
Very well, Isaac Rassimov does a great job of acting and narrating the tale. Basically a photo journalist of sorts from London who gets captured by a tribe. The tribe does many bad things to him and he observes how they brand out justice to any strangers tresspassing on their land. Eventually one of the girls
(saving his life in the process) takes a liking to him and they become lovers. The musical score for this movie is amazing. Again , it's beautiful shot and some of the scenes showing the wildlife and locales will take your breath away guaranteed. Umberto Lenzi is best known for making average horror movies including a horrible called "NightMare City" but this is by his best and most remembered movie to date. The DVD features are thin but this is a great movie. Highly recommended.
LOL! WHERE THE HELL IS RICHARD HARRIS?.......2005-12-18
IS IT JUST ME, OR DOES THIS MOVIE BARE A STRIKING RESEMBLENCE TO "A MAN CALLED HORSE"? IT STARTS OUT LIKE THE SOFT CORE "EMMANUEL" FILMS OF THE 1970'S AND QUICKLY DECENDS INTO A B-RATE EXPLOITATION FLICK. THE PLOT TAKES A BACKSEAT TO NUDITY, GORY VIOLENCE, AND A SESPENSION OF REALITY. THE MAIN CHARACTER WALKS OUT ON A BEAUTIFUL BLONDE GIRLFRIEND AS IF SHE WERE A 2 DOLLAR HOOKER, KILLS A GUY IN A BAR FIGHT, GOES OFF ON SOME UNDERWATER PHOTO EXPEDITION, AND GETS FISHED OUT OF A RIVER BY A GROUP OF JUNGLE NATIVES WHO HAVE NEVER SEEN A WHITE MAN BEFORE. HE IS PUT TO WORK DRIVING WOODEN POSTS INTO THE RIVER BANK WHILE SURROUNDED BY BEAUTIFUL NATIVE GIRLS WHO JUST HAPPEN TO BE COMPLETELY NAKED!(WOWZERS!) ONE OF THE GIRLS TAKES A LIKING TO HIM AND HE MUST ENDURE COMBAT AND TORTURE TO PROVE HIS BRAVERY AND VALUE AS A MEMBER OF THEIR TRIBE. (LIKE I SAID, DOESN'T THIS PLOT SOUND FAMILIAR?)
FROM A PURLY EXPLOITATIONAL POINT OF VIEW, "MAN FROM DEEP RIVER" IS A SURE CLASSIC. IT HAS EVERYTHING THE 13 YEAR OLD BOY INSIDE ALL OF US CRAVES: EXOTIC GIRLS, TRIBAL MEN WHO DONT CARE IF YOU FOOL AROUND WITH THEIR SISTERS, BAR FIGHTS, PRIMATIVE WARFARE, AND CANNIBALISM. NOT TOO BAD, AS LONG AS YOU DONT TAKE THE STORYLINE SERIOUSLY.
Man from Sleep River.......2005-04-06
"The Man from the Deep River" as the credits show, is not what I expected. The box indicates that it is in the vein of all the other Italian cannibal movies. This is not the case as the film is more of a action adventure with little gore or horrific images. Basically, the plot is that a photographer gets stranded in the jungle and is captured by a native tribe. He eventually gains their acceptance and falls in love. He must ultimately decide if he should stay with the tribe or return to civilization. The director is widely known for his gross out movies but this is not really one of them. There are a few scenes of real animal killings and one sequence of cannibalism but other than that, there is nothing going on. Not much to recommend with this film, some good cinematography of the jungle locales, the one cannibalism scene, and that is about all. The DVD sports an interview with director Lenzi that is pretty good. He talks about how his one cannibalism scene was the first in the history of Italian cinema and a few other anecdotes about the movie. Not worth buying (like I did) but perhaps a rental.

Somebody....Please....Tell Me Why?.......2006-06-10
If someone could explain the purpose of this movie, I would be most appreciative!! Not only did I waste my hard earned cash on this film, but it was also a gross waste of my valuable time.
Don't get me wrong - Normally, I love Terrence Howard and his preformance, but I have to say...I am truly disappointed with this film (storyline and delivery).
Wouldn't recommend this to N-E-1.
Garbage.......2006-02-20
Never wanted to send a movie back to Amazon but this one should go back and in the trash.. slow moving, boring, didn't keep my attention... throwing in a few african americans actors that we know is not going to make the movie... What is this suppose to be the men's version of Waiting to Exhale? NOT! Terrence you and Glenn aren't ready to be producers yet...keep your day jobs of acting...
Very low budget..........2006-02-02
Love Beat the Hell Outta Me is a cheesy low budget production.
However, with that said... the best character was Chris played by Terrance Howard. He drives the movie. He's the tough bad boy with nothing nice to say, but he keeps the movie one fourth decent and interesting. The other characters are dull and uncomplicated. They also lack acting ability.
The movie did shed some light and put into SOME perspective on how men think regarding women and relationships. It seems as though, both men and women think each are just full of it and always have an ulterior motive for wanting to be with one another. But this movie showed how neither men nor women want to communicate their true feelings or just be honest about what they want from jump street. In all, unspoken words and misdirected actions help ensued massive amounts of confusion throughout dating and relationships as this movie showed.
I wouldn't recommend this movie to be watched for its production, but if one must watch it...watch it for its message regarding black men and their thought processes.
You've got to be kidding me!.......2006-02-02
If i could rate this piece at 0 stars, i would. An absolute catastrophe of money spent producing and supporting independent black film. Those who rated this movie anywhere above 1 should re-examine why they attend and view movies.
There was no substance to any part of this movie whatsoever. It was an overall poor portrayal of black relationships and the interactions between both male and female roles. As if we didn't have enough trouble out here trying to keep each other on the straight and narrow path of positive thinking and hopeful intuition, we have this piece of trash that is not even of the calibre to be called a "movie", being supported and produced. What kind of message are we sending that allows just anything to be representative of black american culture and its development, if this is the "quality" that we allow to be its image?
I am beyond upset...I'm livid!
love beat the hell outta me........2005-08-24
The movie mostly deals with views of a mans thinking about women, whether true or untrue. Women might not agree with the references made about them. The plot keeps you interested and involved as the story moves along. Terrance Howard is sure to win multiple academy awards during his acting career.
