Regardless of whether it was "too early" in 2006 to dramatize the events of September 11th, 2001, World Trade Center succeeds as a tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who served at "ground zero" in the wake of terrorist attacks on the WTC's twin towers in New York City. Removed from the politics of war and terrorism (yet still, like all films, inherently political in expressing its point of view), Oliver Stone's potent drama focuses on the nightmarish ordeal, and subsequent rescue, of Port Authority policemen John McLoughlin (Nicolas Cage) and Will Jimeno (Michael Peña), who were buried deeply within the rubble of the WTC after the twin towers collapsed. Granted, it's only the film's historical context that distinguishes it from any other dramatic rescue story, but in focusing on the goodness of humanity in response to the evil of terrorists who remain unnamed and off-screen, Stone and first-time screenwriter Andrea Berloff create an emotional context as powerful as anything Stone has directed since Platoon. Even as he resorts to some questionable tactics typically lacking in subtlety, Stone refrains from much of the blunt-force filmmaking that has made him a critical punching bag, rising to this challenging occasion with a heartfelt and deeply American portrait of unity - personal, familial, and national. Flaws and all, World Trade Center serves an honorable purpose, reminding us all that for those fleeting days in September 2001, America showed its best face to a sympathetic world. --Jeff Shannon

Emotions Run High with this cinematic retake of 9/11 .......2007-09-13
~World Trade Center~ is a stunning cinematic portrayal of the pivotal events on September 11, 2001 when terror struck the heart of New York City. Hollywood was expected to come out with a portrayal of those dramatic events on 9/11/01 when terror struck the United States in her financial and political centers. Some naysayers might complain that the focus is a bit off-kilter to center on two cops buried in the rubble. But it was those men who were in the ruins, that were among the most traumatized victims of those attacks who got to live and tell their stories. Why not focus on them and their families? Sergeant John McLoughlin (played by Nicolas Cage) is my favorite character. Courageous but beleaguered, he endures to the end. I could only imagine the shock and trauma of being buried beneath tons of rubble, concrete and steel, breathing in gravel and soot dust, and wondering when or even if help would come.
One of my friends was among the U.S. Marines at ground zero on the evening of the attacks sifting through the rubble looking for survivors. Those two Port Authority officers depicted in the WTC film were found by a Marine named Dave Karnes. They were the last two survivors to be pulled from the rubble at ground zero.
I remember where I was that day. For many, particularly those who were there, 9/11 is a day that will live in infamy. It was a day that brought Americans together in common cause against Islamic radicalism and made us refocus on spiritual concerns. Naturally, this cinematic portrayal directed by Oliver Stone is sure to stir emotions, and remind us of the sacrifices born by the police, fire and rescue personnel of New York City that September day.

The movie is extremely well done and I found the documentaries detailing the stories of the real people to be outstanding. Worth owning and showing to everyone who will watch. Buy it for the real stories told in the documentaries as well as the movie. There is nothing political about this movie as it appears to stay true to the story as told by the original book author.
Oliver Stone Keeps It Real!.......2007-08-19
When Oliver Stone makes movies of historical value, he tends to exagerate the facts (i.e. JFK, Salvador, Midnight Express). In this film, he completely stays out of delivering negative propaganda on who was responsible and focuses on the ordeal and rescue of Port Authority policemen John McLoughlin (Nicolas Cage) and Will Jimeno (Michael Peña). The result is a movie that all viewers would be proud of. The film was made with courage and sympathy to the victims. Some viewers may be put off by the intensity of the subject matter, due to the film being too soon to watch. This film is very much needed in this day and age in hopes that the events of September 11th, 2001 are never forgotten.
Oliver Stone Strikes the Right Chords in WTC.......2007-08-05
There are a lot of people who criticize Oliver Stone for his leftist, conspiracy-themed movies, finding them at once preachy and ridiculous. There are others who went to THIS movie wanting all of the 911 conspiracies explored and validated. The first crowd of criticizers will be pleasantly surprised by WORLD TRADE CENTER, while the second group may consider this piece surprisingly unambitious and simple. You know why? Because it was taken from the story of two cops, unencumbered by political motivations, who only wanted two things: first, to help people trapped in the doomed buildings, and second, failing that, to stay alive themselves.
WORLD TRADE CENTER is a simple movie, and that's a welcome antidote to those of us who have become rather stupified and torpid by Stone's self-indulgent attack ads against the government disguised as movies. He's always a great director, but his films are often swept away by the mission-mindedness of his scripts. This movie is free from all that.
Cage is great. Gyllenhall is great. The shots are poignant, not exploitative, and the film crackles with suspense because it is centered on its story--not the implications of the story, which the viewer can draw for him or herself. That's the way PLATOON was made; that's the way, before Stone got all important, he wrote scripts for films like CONAN THE BARBARIAN and SCARFACE. Make no mistake: that kind of selfless discipline serves a story like this--with the country so torn in half over IRAQ--perfectly. It's one of Stone's better movies, and when you examine the earlier half of his career, that IS saying something.

Everyone remembers where they were on certain days. When JFK was shot. When man landed on the moon. (I still say you see strings.) When John Lennon was murdered. (So far, too young for all of these.) When Princess Diana was killed (having a sleepover with my ex-best friend.) When September 11th happened - I was on holiday in the UK at the time. My now boyfriend had come home early from college, as he wasn't feeling great. I remember walking back to our caravan (how quaint) and someone in a neighbouring caravan telling us to switch on the news. We sat and watched the news unfold, and I still have a diary somewhere which I wrote in everything we were getting told, and how I was feeling. For some reason, I was worrying my friends back home in Scotland, even though we were still many miles away from New York.
Flight 93, United 93 and World Trade Center all seemed to come about at the same time. I'm still not sure why. To make films of other people's suffering. But they're out there now, we can't stop them, all we can do is try and put ourselves in their place.
World Trade Center is very well acted, with a brilliant cast consisting of Nicholas Cage (with a very bad moustache), Maria Bello, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jay Hernandez, Stephen Dorff and Michael Peña. It's so well acted in fact you actually forget you're watching a film. I was holding my breath during some points in the film, and was nearly in tears at other points. Watching re-runs of the original news footage, was quite emotional. I do agree with some reviewers, that it did focus a bit too much on the two police officers stuck in the rubble - I had it in my head it was actually going to be them IN the World Trade Center, not stuck underneath the rubble. But it was brilliantly acted by Nicholas & Michael, it must have been so claustrophobic during those scenes and flat on their backs, amongst the 240 tons of material that was used to recreate a fully 3-dimensional Ground Zero in Los Angeles.
The film spares the feelings for the people that were actually there, by not using footage of the planes actually striking the Twin Towers. We're shown how little the officers knew at the time, as they prepared to evacuate North Tower, they had no idea South Tower had even been hit.
Maggie Gyllenhaal and Maria Bello play the worried wives back home, anxiously waiting for news. Maria's character has four children with Nicholas's character, and Maggie is 5 months pregnant with their second child.
After everything that has happened since 2001, a pointless war in Iraq which has done nothing but let even more people grieve, and attacks in London, it seems nothing can be done, unless the Americans come together and get a new President. As recently as a couple of weeks ago in 2007, Tony Blair finally stepped down as Prime Minister in the UK, and Bush should follow.
I don't think any more films should be made about 9/11. 2,700+ people were lost that day, and with a mere three films out there retelling the story, it can't be pleasant for any Americans. Let them grieve Hollywood.

The titular center of the world is a matter of perspective in Wayne Wang's (The Joy Luck Club, Smoke) notorious, explicit drama of emotional isolation and sexual commerce in the modern world. According to rich, apathetic cyber-geek Peter Sarsgaard (Boys Don't Cry), it's his home computer. Amateur rock & roll drummer and part-time stripper Molly Parker (Wonderland) deems it an erotic part of the female anatomy. Their "date" is merely a sexual contract that takes them to Las Vegas, a place as phony and impersonal as their so-called romance. "You know it's just an act, right?" she reminds him between her slinky bump-and-grind striptease shows and their sweaty sexual gymnastics.
The Internet makes a great metaphor for modern social alienation, with its impersonal communication and virtual sex, but there's not much else new in this familiar story other than the erotic content. Shot on dimly lit, high-definition video, the gray, washed palette sucks the glamour and titillation right out of the spectacle, turning it into an empty, soulless exercise in physical sensation and self delusion--appropriate to this story of lonely souls unable to break through their own isolation. --Sean Axmaker

It was a very unusual movie. I was a bit confused about their relationship, but I was entertained enough to watch the whole thing.
Sex shouldn't be boring.......2006-10-14
Two moderately decent-looking white people who apparently aren't very good at sex go at it in this movie. If that's your thing, why not just rent a bad softcore porn film and be done with it? At least then you won't have to listen to the cornball pseudo-artistic dialogue in this film. What a crock. They could at least have cast a fine young sista like Rosario Dawson or Gabrielle Union to make this movie moan and squeal! This movie makes sex seem boring.
intense sexy drama with leads in great performances.......2005-05-24
Peter Sarsgaard(The Salton Sea, Empire) is in love with Molly Parker(Bliss1997, Sunshine) who is a hooker& a stripper and so Sarsgaard brings Parker to Vegas for 3 days where then things start to unfold. Sarsgaard's passion for Parker breaks down a wall and she might like him too. Great performances by the leads with some intense, sexual moments, some of which Parker shows some skin, nice..adult drama about obsession. Also starring Balthazar Getty (Project Greenlight's Feast, Lost Highway) and Alisha Klass.
It's 10:00 p.m.: Do you know where your lap dance is?.......2005-01-31
Las Vegas. A computer nerd with too much money--a thin, freckled redhead with too little money. A gaudy hotel suite, complete with erotic paintings; a set of two double-doors, separating (permanently) our two protagonists.
And behold the movie THE CENTER OF THE WORLD. That's pretty much it.
Okay, there is a little more than the above, but not much. When computer wonder-boy Richard Longman (Peter Sarsgaard) finds himself infatuated with a stripper and rock drummer-wannabe Florence (Molly Parker), he offers the lady ten grand to spend three pleasurable nights in Las Vegas with him. Never mind the fact he could have used the money for a decent set of clothes and a shampoo, but I digress. Florence accepts the offer, but there are conditions. Primarily, ala the film "Pretty Woman," the conditions have to do with avoiding liking one another, so at once the viewer knows immediately what's going to happen.
So, in essence, we are treated to a film where two characters prance and frolic in wanton self-denial, until, at last, one of them finally succumbs to his/her (no giving away the storyline for me, by golly) emotions. The confrontation/climax is both bittersweet and unbelievable--especially once the rejector treats the rejectee to a most puzzling episode of self-pleasure, before the lowered eyes of said rejectee.
Where the heck did that come from?
But, again, I digress. THE CENTER OF THE WORLD is a handsome film, and very easy on the eyes. Both main characters could stand a square meal, by the way, but again, that's just me. Eat hearty, folks. The ending is contrived, nothing is actually resolved, and now I'm pulling the cushions off my sofa looking for loose change. Gotta save up my money: Ten thousand buckaroos is going to be dang hard to come by.
--D. Mikels
Boring to watch.......2004-08-05
The actors spend too much time just staring at each other without speaking. The story is too unbelievable too. It was a waste of my money to buy it.

Oustanding movie and special features.......2007-09-13

Was it too soon?.......2007-07-23
Everyone remembers where they were on certain days.

Definitely no academy performances but it was a good movie for as long as it was. If they would have had more of Petra (Yamen) Jamen in the movie it would have been even better!!!!!
Corny but Good!.......2007-03-20
This isn't an oscar winning film but it's entertaining and fun if you like the Hercules or Zena Series type of shows. Same bad acting but for some reason I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the book even though it was altered alot. I guess so they could film in New Zealand. Don't expect alot from this film just simple fun!

Evidence of Explosives, NIST's Own Conclusion That Fire Has Never Brought Down A Steel Structure.......2006-03-27
This video is definitely a promo piece that works for the official story, but hidden inside this great documentary are interviews with professors that actually take the official story apart.
Jonathan Barnett, Professor of Fire Protection Engineering, is interviewed in this presentation during the segment on the British Steel Industrial Fire Test of 1995, where a 5 story building filled with office furniture, computers, paper, and other items, in a non-fireproofed environment was set ablaze and allowed to burn for several hours. And what happened? The building stood there with no chance of a collapse. The video footage of the test is interspliced with Barnett's interview, where he states: "When steel is bare -- when it heats up -- it gets weaker. It's not that it melts in a fire, in fact, fires--normal fires--are not hot enough to melt steel. Even if you were, for example, to use an unusual fuel -- like kerosene -- you cannot achieve temperatures hot enough to melt steel." He then adds, "In over 20 years I have not seen -- until recently -- a protected steel structure that has collapsed in a fire."
His statement might be meaningless to you if he was just some schmoe from around the way, but Professor Barnett was one of the chief investigators of the government's NIST/FEMA team that was tasked with determining what made the towers come down.
**It should be noted that the NIST/FEMA investigation even concluded that jet fuel cannot produce temperatures that burn hot enough to melt steel.
Another great interview/segment is with Professor Abolhassan Astaneh-Asl, who is shown examining the steel wreckage of the WTC. He says, "What you see here is actually very critical - very, very important. Perhaps, this is the most important piece I have found so far. ...This is the inside face of [the] back columns. ...What you see here is, first of all, it bent. That was due to [an] explosion - but more importantly - this has a signature of [an] explosion. This has happened due to explosive material hitting this column and making that bulge. So this is [the] floor where [an] explosion happened, and the windows are blown away. Everything is burned. Even [the] fire-proofing on this floor is burned and glazed to the steel."
Any 9/11 researchers out there would be smart to grab this video and archive it. There are extraordinary CGI diagrams that show how immense the construction of the towers was, including the 47-steel core columns that made up the support for the buildings.
One conclusion is echoed over and over in this film, and that's on the morning of 9/11 everyone watching was amazed and shocked that the towers fell the way they did -- after all, NO ONE ever thought a steel skyscraper could collapse from just fire. Throughout the history of architecture, no steel structure has ever fallen due to fire, but on September 11th, "they" want you to believe that two 110-story buildings, and a third 47-story building did just that.
Anatomy of a Collapse .......2005-03-28
The Learning Channel has released a fine video of hard-hitting evidence explaining once & for all how the two tallest buildings in the history of Manhatten were reduced to rubble during the attacks of 9/11/01. You'll also see some pretty neat camera angles of the second plane hitting the South Tower, some that I haven't seen before. A brief history of the rise of the twin towers is presented here, as well as footage showing the aftermath of the 1993 WTC bombing. The reason why I don't give this DVD/video 5 stars is because it was only 53 minutes long. They should've added a lot more to this video before releasing it on VHS/DVD. Oh, well, I still recommend this film. It will give you a clear understanding as to why the WTC collapsed.
This is NOT the DVD offered for free.......2004-05-26
In spite of what some 'reviewers' have stated, this is not the DVD the government was giving away. That DVD is called 'Up From Zero' and can be requested at http://www.dol.gov/opa/dvd
Good luck though, I requested my copy last fall and have yet to receive it, tho I got an email in December saying the demand was enormous and it should be shipped in 2 weeks (still waiting and just requested it again).
From the website:
"Up From Zero" is a documentary film that pays tribute to the brave men and women of the New York City building trades who put themselves on the line on September 11, 2001 - and for nine months afterward - to reclaim Ground Zero.
*UPDATE* I did finally receive the free DVD, and it was spectacular, much more than I'd expected. If you request it, be patient but don't give up, re-request it if you need to. It was a very informative and interesting DVD. Well worth the wait in my opinion.
Painfully logical.......2004-02-23
Although I was but a few miles away from the WTC on that awful day, I was spared watching it unfold. Like many New Yorkers, it took me a couple of years to even begin to look at the videos surrounding the disaster. The first thing I watched was Ken Burns' final episode to his NEW YORK documentary. Because I had seen the previous seven parts, and had loved them, I knew this subject would be in good hands, and it was.
This documentary, ANATOMY OF A COLLAPSE, was the next I watched. It, too, struck be as well-conceived and intelligently explained. The CGI work supporting the expert analysis was an enormous aide to understanding the chain reaction that led to the implosions. Still, this is an unbearably sad documentary that seemed a little too coldly analytical, almost distant: something the Burns' documentary avoided. But I think everyone will have a different emotional response to anything about the WTC disaster. For this reason, I hope people will watch this video to gain a solid understanding of the whys and hows those beautiful silver towers crumbled.

While I appreciate tagman77's passionate editorial on the events of September 11, 2001, it lacks an actual review of the DVD.
This style of writing is more "Letter to the Editor" than anything else and didn't give me any indication as to what the DVD is actually like.
