David Lynch's 1990 Wild at Heart is an utterly random and ugly experience with pockets of startling imagery and inspired set pieces. Based on a Barry Gifford novel, the film stars Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern as lovers on the lam whose relationship is tested and who meet some truly dangerous wackos (including an almost-simian Willem Dafoe). Lynch's thoughts seem to be everywhere, and he expects the audience to keep up with a story that seems more a collection of avant-garde whims than a coherent vision with the intuitive brilliance of his Blue Velvet. Cage gives one of his more chaotic performances, but then he was just reading Lynch's signposts. --Tom Keogh

Description

David Lynch delivers a "stunning piece of work" (Chicago Tribune) with this "flamboyantly violent and erotic" (The Village Voice) tale of love on the run Â- now remastered under LynchÂ's supervision with upgraded picture and sound. Featuring the "formidable performances" (Leonard Maltin) of Nicolas Cage, Laura Dern, Willem Dafoe, Crispin Glover and Diane Ladd, Wild at Heart is a twisted "rollercoaster ride to redemption through an American gothic heart of darkness" (Variety). If Lula (Dern) knows one thing in this world, itÂ's that sheÂ's destined to be with her ex-con boyfriend Sailor (Cage) Â- no matter how many times her mama tries to kill him. But when she and Sailor finally hit the road in a desperate bid to find happiness, their journey plunges them into a disturbing underworld filled with sexual secrets and dangerous desires that form a terrifying "tapestry of human extremity" (Variety).

5 out of 5 stars Deep as a basket full of snakes.......2007-08-21

A simple film by David Lynch. Of course you have suspense. Of course you have a good thriller. Of course too you have a good love story and gangster story intertwined. But there is something more than that in this simple film. David Lynch, for an unreasonable, i.e. unexplainable, reason decides to have a good sentimental positive ending. That enables us to draw a lesson from the rest of the film and transform a simple gangster story into a philosophical story about family and parents. A possessive mother can destroy everything around her but there is no reason for the daughter to yield and the daughter will always win against her possessive mother. Even evil witchcraft, or mafia gangsters, will not save the mother's stake. On the other side the father is an indispensable presence in the life of a child, be he a boy or she a girl. The possessive mother will get rid of the father if necessary just like she will get rid of her own lover if he stands in the way of her possessive schizophrenia (to commit suicide with lipstick, ah ah ah). But the father will survive for the daughter as a target to attain and recreate in the man she will choose to love, be impregnated by and "marry" in a way or another. But what's more the child born from this union will need a father and will recognize him at first sight even six years after his birth or so. Is this line, this thread going along all David Lynch's films? Maybe not so clearly but yes there is a family problem in all films, a link with some kind of a family, a father, a mother, an aunt, or someone else. The happy ending of this film and the way it is constructed at the very last minute in a very spectacular flight and return scene and then exploited through all the credits seem to show this family link is the essential link in the back of David Lunch's (at least ) subconscious mind. Well done and rather entertaining. And I loved the Deep Creek, Gulch, Stream, Bay or whatever, but Deep anyway, in the middle of a desertic nowhere somewhere in Texas, if it is Texas. As for the setting of some deep tragedy in the deepest layers of the minds of the characters or the dregs of society it is perfect with a heroin called Fortune and a hero called Sailor, that is wet with humor and damp with wit.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible !.......2007-03-09

hi..
I have no idea where the positive reviwes came from, i mean this movie was terrible, it was pointless!
I think it is highly over rated, very very boring, drags alot and pointless movie.
people speak of surrealizm and bizzarness, and that it made the movie worthwhile, well, it sure is bizzare, but in a really bad way.
Violence ? what violence ? just one or two scenes of shoot outs and they call it violence !!! i've seen much more before !!
And whats with the repitive sex scenes, again pointless !!
its basically a story of two couples enjoying themselves and running and going on a poitnless road trip, nothing more or less, no plot !!
And whats all the hype about the wizard if OZ reference, it didn't add anything special to the movie !!!
Sorry, but i can't see what is good about this awful movie !!!
i want my money back please !!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Film.......2007-02-17

Another triumph for director David Lynch. Outstanding performances, great sound effects, great music and soundtrack. This film is a must see. Just like all of David Lynch's other films.

3 out of 5 stars Full of sound and fury.......2007-01-24

David Lynch is a master of over-statement; even when his films aren't saying anything very dramatic or profound, it appears as though they are. He does this extensively in "Wild at Heart," his violent, sexy film from 1990. Another Lynch trademark is that his films are highly entertaining. In this one, Sailor Ripley (Nick Cage) runs away with his girl, Lula Fortune (Laura Dern). Lula's (and Dern's) mother, Marietta Fortune (Diane Ladd) will seemingly stop at nothing to keep the two apart. Her reasons for this aren't the obvious reasons we would assume them to be, though they aren't all that difficult to ascertain either. As with every Lynch creation, this film is replete with oddball characters, and they are one reason his films are always worth watching. Sailor models his life after Elvis Presley and regales us with renditions of some of his songs. His snakeskin jacket is a symbol of his individuality and personal freedom, the fact of which he reminds us multiple times. Dern spends a good part of the film in various states of undress, which never hurts. For whatever reason, "The Wizard of Oz" is a recurring theme throughout the movie, which is sort of cute, and the whole affair plays like an ode to cigarettes. This film certainly provides plenty of eye candy, though its hyperbole grows somewhat irksome. Ultimately, it ends up seeming like an elaborate student film, signifying nothing.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2007-01-28

This is an excellent study series for a group of men. The one drawback of the DVD curriculum is that it does not follow the book exactly, and with 12 chapters in the book and field manual that follow each other exactly, and 8 in the DVD, is doesn't seem weighted evenly. Yet even with that against it, this is an awesome series.

I first worked through this series by myself, then with one close friend - a pastor I know. Then both he and I led different groups through it: I a small group at my home, and he with the men in his church on Sunday evenings. Later he and I jointly did a weekend retreat to refresh the material for his men before they launched into some other material.

These DVDs will show you a group of men, John Eldredge and the Ransomed Heart Ministry Team, working through each of the issues raised in the book and having some frank discussions on camera, and some fun in the wilderness, as they work through these issues.

This facilitator's kit comes with the DVDs, posters to promote your event, invitations to use in smaller settings, and a manual. The manual goes through each week and suggests movie clips to start with, or music to use while gathering. It is a great resource and will help you get the most out of the book and field manual.

I would advise you not to try to use this without the men having the book and field manual, because it will be frustrating and will severely limit how much you can get out of the material. It is really designed for, and functions best as, a group study.

The DVDs are well done and very professional, the gag reel is hilarious, and some of the outtakes will have you on the floor laughing. It is not all super serious; there is a lot of fun as these men bonded further while filming this. Watch them launch their cell phones with a skeet shooter and shoot them out of the sky.

This tool will help you become a better man, husband, father, and son. Worth the time, effort, and money.

Australia released, PAL/Region 4 DVD: it WILL NOT play on standard US DVD player. You need multi-region PAL/NTSC DVD player to view it in USA/Canada. LANGUAGES: English (Dolby Digital 5.1), WIDESCREEN, SYNOPSIS: Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern play a pair of lovers on the run in David Lynch's surrealist road movie Wild at Heart. Cage's Sailor Ripley is a violent ex-convict with an Elvis Presley fixation who falls in love with Dern's Lula Pace Fortune, the daughter of a rich, but mentally unstable, Southern belle named Marietta (Diane Ladd, Dern's real-life mother). Just after Sailor is released from prison, where he was jailed for brutally killing one of Marietta's thugs, he and Lula take off on a wild cross-country trip, pursued by his parole officer, her mother, criminals, bounty hunters, and detectives. Along the way, Sailor and Lula have a lot of sex, share their pasts, share their respective obsessions for Elvis and The Wizard of Oz, and meet a lot of bizarre characters. Inevitably, the voyage ends in tragedy, as a seedy ex-marine (Willem Dafoe) persuades Sailor to participate in a bank robbery. Lynch's direction is more flamboyant than in the past, yet he still keeps an ironic distance from his characters, which prevents the story from being truly involving. Still, his cult followers will find enough fine visuals and jokes to make Wild at Heart a thoroughly worthwhile experience.

    Product Description

David Lynchs baroque rendering of Frank Herberts detailed, complex, and deliberately paced epic science-fiction novel is a muddled but visually stunning affair. It's 10991, and the desert planet Dune has been taken over by the Harkonnens, oppressive conquerors who desire the precious spice that lies beneath Dune's arid sands. The story concerns the attempts of a young warrior messiah, Paul Atreides (Kyle MacLachlan), to lead the native inhabitants in an uprising against the evil empire--and battle the giant man-eating worms that guard the coveted spice. Lynch shot much more footage than ended up in the finished film, but executive producer Dino De Laurentiis didn't want a three-hour-plus sci-fi epic on his hands, so he coerced Lynch into trimming it. The result is one of cinemas most infamous cases of personal vision colliding with studio politics. Nonetheless, Lynch still manages to cram in so many visual ideas and captures the tone of the book so well that these production issues can be easily set aside once the story starts rolling. Refusing to further edit the film for television, Lynch took his name off the director and screenwriter credits. As troubling as DUNE might have been for Lynch, the experience greatly inspired 1986s brilliant BLUE VELVET, for which audiences should be thankful. 4 out of 5 stars Longer it is more palatable but less good........2007-01-10

Dune has always been a fascinating novel. The first film by David Lynch was a great moment in science fiction and the beginning of a brilliant career for Sting as an actor. David Lynch looked for extreme situations and extreme scenes to more than shock people, to horrify them with the Harkonnens, to stupefy them with Duke Leto or his concubine, to villify the Emperor, and to satisfy and terrify the public with Paul Muabdib. The beauty and the force of the film came from these different approaches and profiles put together and coming to a final and terminating fight announcing a complete regeneration of the world like rain in a desert. Then there was the TV series by John Harrison, slow and long but very right about the Fremens and their life, with plenty of visual details. We had jumped from more than two hours to more than four hours. The Ultimate Edition of the Film proposes in three DVDs the first version of the film and a second version in two parts coming to three hours or so. This longer version of the film could be expected to keep the main characteristics of the shorter version. You are mistaken. First some shots are repeated several times as if similar shots in similar situations and places would have been too expensive to shoot separately or simply again under s different angle, knowing that two places and two situations that are identical get some semiotic meaning from this very repetition which is far from being the case here. Second some cuts are introduced here and there to liberate time for the additions there and here. The life of the Harkonnens on their planet is thus amputated of some segments that were very important to characterize them as horrifyingly inhuman and cruel, and what's more the homosexual nature of the Baron is nicely reduced particularly in that shocking scene where he unplugs the heart of a young man in order to wash his skin disease in this dying young man's blood shooting out of his chest. This gave the real nature of the Baron some kind of gay vampiristic cannibalistic monster. Apparently that had become politically incorrect within a few years. Or did the first version of the film have such a great, or small, success that they tried to make a longer version targeting a wider public, hence that had to be slightly curbed in its most explicit scenes concerning man's cruelty, and eventually his sexuality ? This is surprising that David Lynch in this edition covers this longer version that is not directed by him, with his interview in the third DVD, an interview given by David Lynch at the time of the first shorter version. The DVD is yet extremely interesting because of the bringing together of the two film-versions and quite a few resources. Yet there remains one question as for why no one has ever tried to shoot the next volumes of the Dune saga which is still going on with the volumes anterior to Dune itself written by Frank Herbert's son. In fact this world is more political science fiction about the 21st century than about the sixth or seventh millenia. Or is it universal ?

3 out of 5 stars Dear god what will it take??.......2005-12-06

I got this version and it's nice to see extra footage, but I agree that it is not as good as the theatrical release. What will it take to see the WHOLE thing as David Lynch intended it when he filmed so much and was forced to cut it down. Obviously the film is still in existence, so what's the problem?? Many other directors have gone back like Cameron with The Abyss and put the entire piece back together so now it makes sense. C'mon people - it's all about money and there's lots of us who would pay to see the entire thing as Lynch envisioned it from start to finish. Am I wrong?? I'm old enough to remember the pre-showing that DID have the entire 3+ hour movie limited to one weekend in NY and I missed it but my friends DID see it and thought it was amazing. Then it was pulled and it took a year before it finally came out in the theaters.

3 out of 5 stars Collectible, but too long........2005-09-22

I understand why David Lynch took his name off. The pace is just too slow. As a fan of Dune, I appreciate the extra content from the book that was missing from the theatrical release. I appreciate this version as a collector, but I feel the 2001 version of Dune was a better movie.

    3 out of 5 stars Duna - Import.......2005-09-13

This film is an attempt to put The Book -- Dune to film. I felt that it falls short of the production made by the Science Fiction Channel. It was also fairly expensive for what you get. I enjoyed viewing it, but it's not the kind of film you would watch more than once a year.

Young lovers Sailor and Lula take off for New Orleans following Sailor's release from prison, with Lula's hysterical mother, a weary detective and a sinister hitman after them. I still LOVE this movie. For me, David Lynch made two classic movies; Eraserhead & this. Blue Velvet was ok, but incredibly over-rated by cult movie nerds. It's so over-rated that if you say something like this, nerds will hunt you down. Wild At Heart is a much better film. It burns from start to finish. A modern Wizard Of Oz, road movie, black comedy, film noir, call it what you like. Nicholas Cage is the tongue-in-cheek-cool, Elvis speaking Sailor, opposite the lovely Laura Dern's Lula. Diane Ladd deserves the Oscar, while Willem Defoe's Bobby Peru is one of cinema's best mondo-wierdos. Crispin Glover's Jingle Dale is fleeting, but unforgettably funny. This is Harry Dean's best performance, I think & Isabella "if it wasn't for Ma & Pa" Rossellini is forgettable apart from her weird hair. It's a truly great Lynch movie with a superb sceenplay. Constant reference to fire throughout. Yesterday I bought the DVD. Wow! You gotta love the widescreen. Played it again for the 12th time. Never get sick of it.
