Sissy Spacek won a much-deserved Oscar for her lead in this entertaining biography of country-music legend Loretta Lynn. British director Michael Apted (Gorillas in the Mist) brings fine texture to the Kentucky backwoods section of the film, where the teenage Loretta meets her future husband (Tommy Lee Jones), who ultimately pushes her into show business. Lynn's adult life is well covered, from her spouse's philandering to her own on-stage crackups; but between the chapter-and-verse recollections, the script by Thomas Rickman is layered with life and moments of great humor. No wooden portrait, this is a vibrant film made outstanding by the colorful performances of the two leads, as well as Beverly D'Angelo and the Band's Levon Helm. --Tom Keogh

This is my favorite movie of all time. Definately a must have for any DVD collection. Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones both do an excellent job of portaying their characters & bringing them into your homes as well as your hearts.

Very good story all the way through the movie. Great music and very entertaining. This was a favorite movie for my family growing up and now we all own a copy of it. I think my sister is on her second copy after wearing out the first one. Even my teenagers don't complain about watching this "old school" movie. You won't be disappointed.

Stellar story about appalachian mountain life.......2007-07-19

Very well-paced movie about growing up poor country. I enjoyed
the very instinctual rhythms of life of these simple folk.
Sissy and Tommy had wonderful chemistry, and Sissy shined in all
her singing numbers. A very refreshing and honest movie that
didn't miss a beat. Outstanding americana after all these years.

Apted's affecting, flavorful biopic is the tale of a young woman intent on using her musical gift to escape an impoverished mountain life, and also the unvarnished story of a real marriage, filled with bruises and bumps, that still manages to last. Spacek won the Oscar that year for her note-perfect performance as Loretta (which included singing her own parts), but Jones is every bit as good as Mooney. Also look for an impressive take by Beverly D'Angelo on the legendary Patsy Cline.

THe book is terrific but the movie feels like a not well done telenovela, every scene is about a dramatic cry. Feels like a movie for little kids. THe story is in itself a lesson but the movie is not. Good photography but as a movie it looks like a the pieces of a one year telenovela cut in pieces. THere are better Chilean movies, this is not one of them.

This is one of the best chileans movies I ever seen, winner of four awards .This is a two disc movie based on a small city in Chile, Pueblo de Lota in 1897. One of the biggest coal mines of the world ,This movie is based on a book by Baldomero Lillo, you can not missed it, is one of the best!!!!! great acting,well everything is GREAT!!!!!!enjoy it

How great it is to have Loretta Lynn on DVD!!! Done in 5.1, the sound is pretty good, the picture is tacky late 70's early 80's with the bad glare. But the point is the music. This is Loretta sounding her best and singing her greatest hits.
