Alfred Hitchcock fans may experience déjà vu upon exposure to this voyeuristic thriller. That's because director DJ Caruso (The Salton Sea) and co-writer Carl Ellsworth (Red Eye) use Rear Window as a jumping-off point before cherry-picking from more recent scare fare, like The Blair Witch Project. In the prologue, 17-year-old Kale (Shia LaBeouf, Holes) loses his beloved father to a car crash. A year passes, and he's still on edge. When a teacher makes a careless remark about his dad, Kale punches him out, and is sentenced to house arrest. After his mom (Carrie-Anne Moss, Memento) takes away his Xbox and iTunes privileges, the suburban slacker spies on his neighbors to pass the time. In the process, he develops a crush on Ashley (Sarah Roemer, The Grudge 2), the hot girl next door, and becomes convinced that another, the soft-spoken Mr. Turner (David Morse, The Green Mile), is a serial killer. With the help of the flirtatious Ashley, practical joke-playing pal Ronnie (Aaron Yoo), and an array of high-tech gadgets, like cell-phone cameras and digital camcorders, Kale sets out to solve a major case without leaving his yard (a feat that would prove more challenging for a less affluent sleuth). In the end, it's pretty familiar stuff, but there are plenty of scares once Turner realizes he's being watched, and rising star LaBeouf, who next appears in Michael Bay's Transformers, makes for an engaging leading man--despite his character's propensity for slugging Spanish instructors. --Kathleen C. 2 out of 5 stars A weak modernized remake of Rear Window for teens.......2007-09-15

As everybody knows by now, Disturbia was pretty much a modernized remake of Hitchcocks 'Rear Window" for the teen scene.

For all practical purposes nothing of substance happens for the first 50 minutes of the this film, thus suspense is never really built like in Hitchcock's work.

When things start to happen, it does so in a largely irritating manner due to the two (2) criminal sins too many film makers commit today........

1) Keeping the story going by having everybody do the dumbest actions possible.

2) Ignore the laws of physics and reality.

If you are watching a murderer thru binoculars from across the street and the very moment you set them down, you turn and find that killer standing in your 2nd floor bedroom then somehow that killer is either magical or owns a molecular transporter.
All thru this movie, the killer appears and dissapears instantaneously near our main characters even if they just saw the killer 100 yards away only 2 seconds earlier.

I suppose this was done to "surprise" the audience, but it comes across quite silly.

The young actors were actually very good and they could have done more with this movie........ it ends up just being a watered down teen flick that borrows heavily from a classic but misses the formula for what made the original Hitchcock film so good.

4 out of 5 stars A Spooky Blend.......2007-09-14

I couldn't help comparing Disturbia with the Burbs and Rear Window.

There is some great humor in Disturbia along with the horror and creepiness.

With several scenes that are hard to shake from your thoughts late at night when you can't sleep and the house starts to make noises, Disturbia delivers on the suspense and thrills.

I appreciated the restraint it showed in language, gore and sex. There are some elements that parents will want to check into if they are concerned about their kids seeing Disturbia, but it's not a teen gross out movie.

5 out of 5 stars Disturbia: Disturbingly Excellent.......2007-09-14

This movie was a chiller, from beginning to end! Excellent Friday night movie!

4 out of 5 stars Suprisingly good.......2007-09-12

The first half of "Disturbia" is rather bland....Kale (Shia LaBeouf) is placed under house arrest for popping his teacher and he begins a three-month "incarceration" by watching videos and looking pretty bored. But after he picks up his binoculars and begins scouting the neighbors, things accelerate. Loosely based on Alfred Hitchcock's "Rear Window", "Disturbia" is an update with gizmos. One cannot imagine this film working on any level unless everyone had a cellphone. "Disturbia" is aimed at a younger crowd but an appealing performance by LaBeouf helps it to a satisfying conclusion.

If you can give The Astronaut Farmer the big, bounding leap of faith it requires, you'll probably enjoy this good-natured film about the importance of holding on to your dreams. The title character (and the dreamer in question) is Charlie Farmer (Billy Bob Thornton), a Texas ranch owner and former aeronautics engineer who's got a homemade rocket in his barn and a dream to blast into space. Even though Charlie's deeply in debt and threatened with foreclosure, his wife (Virginia Madsen) and kids are deeply supportive of Charlie's Earth-orbit mission, even when he attracts the glaring attention of a seasoned Air Force colonel (played by Bruce Willis, in an uncredited role), the FAA, the FBI, and the national media. "If we don't have our dreams, we have nothing," says Charlie at a particularly desperate impasse, and this loopy, offbeat, and unabashedly sentimental drama embraces that message with disarming sincerity.

Suspension of disbelief is a challenge when the movie glosses over so many of its logistical details (like, where does one buy an old NASA space capsule?), and in trying for a kind of Capra-esque, eccentrically Western spin on the American dream, the Polish twins--director Michael and cowriter/actor Mark (making their mainstream debut after such indie hits as Twin Falls, Idaho and Northfork)--are only marginally successful in making Charlie's ambition genuinely believable. The film works much better as a kind of post space-age fable for families, and it's just involving enough to make its climax emotionally rewarding, mostly because Thornton, Madsen, and their costars (including Bruce Dern and Tim Blake Nelson) handle the delicate material with the earnestness it needs to be marginally convincing. Elton John's "Rocket Man" is predictably heard over the closing credits (accordingly, Charlie's launch-time is "zero hours, nine a.m."), and at a time when several adventurous entrepreneurs (including Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos) are gradually developing a civilian space-flight industry, The Astronaut Farmer is an admirable yet forgivably flawed reminder that we should never stop reaching for the stars. --Jeff Shannon

Description

All systems are "Go" for Charles Farmer. He's faced bank foreclosure, neighborhood naysayers and a government alarmed by his huge purchase of high-grade fuel, but now he's ready to blast into space inside the homemade rocket he built in his barn. Just be home in time for dinner, Charlie. Billy Bob Thornton portrays Charlie in this charmer about chasing dreams...and about what it means to be a family. 10,000 pounds of rocket fuel alone can't lift Charlie into the heavens. He needs a launch/recovery crew, and he has one of the best: his wife (Virginia Madsen) and children, dreamers all. They have liftoff. Our spirits have uplift. Gravity cannot hold down our dreams. The Astronaut Farmer is that kind of movie.

2 out of 5 stars Houston, We Have a Series of Problems.......2007-09-14

I have become more and more skeptical of movies over the years, mostly because of the political agendas attached to them in one form or another. This one had just a touch of that (a quip about not finding WMD's), but that wasn't the main reason my snoozer got in full gear almost before the opening credits were finished.

It would take some real skill to make the story of a farmer flying his own space rocket believable enough to keep a person's attention. This film doesn't have it. The characters come across as mindless lunatics, folks you would rather see incarcerated for their own protection rather than your next door neighbors. Most farmers struggle to balance their books just making a living, yet this guy can build million-dollar machines before almost losing the farm. The story doesn't flow well, and tries to force a climax on the viewers who are already mezermized by the film's stupidity. Sorry, but I would not recommend spending your 2.99 to rent this film, and if you care at all about wasting money certainly don't buy it.

2 out of 5 stars The Polish Brothers Shouldn't Do Mainstream Hollywood Films.......2007-09-08

"I have a dream!" Those words echoed by Martin Luther King and the multitude of followers have since become a mantra for many. And there's nothing wrong with having a dream. Following it, though, can lead to problems. Especially if that dream is expensive, dangerous, maybe a bit psychotic, and possibly illegal ...or all four.

When a man named Charles Farmer (Billy Bob Thornton, The Ice Harvest) from Texas wants to blast a space rocket out of his barn and into orbit, one might think "cool idea." But how far can one man's dream go before it becomes a damaging obsession? Damaging to his life, his family's life, and maybe even the nation.

Charles' family shares his dream, a kind of mass psychosis, about launching a private rocket (with Dad at the controls) into outer space. His wife Audie (Virginia Madsen, Sideways) supports him undyingly but has her doubts about him ever launching the rocket. His eldest son Shepard (Max Thieriot) will be his mission control, and his two young daughters Stanley (Jasper Polish) and Sunshine (Logan Polish) worship their father's dream in an almost biblical sense. But when foreclosures, FAA regulations, and the wavering support of his town develop, Charles must take drastic measures. Nearly killing himself with his first attempt, Charles' dream of spaceflight fades and with it the man and all those around him. His wife realizes what must be done, for without the dream her husband no longer exists.

Being a HUGE Polish brothers fan (Northfork is one of my all-time favorite films), I expected much from identical twins Mark and Michael, but they sadly disappointed me with THE ASTRONAUT FARMER. Plot and story are rapidly slashed in order to keep the movie moving forward, giving the entire film an unrealistic feel. There's no hallelujah moment (although the film would have you believe there is) simply because there's no way the watcher could get behind the characters and care about them with a story that didn't allow you to get and remain close to them.

This is the Polish brothers' most mainstream Hollywood film to date, with well-known actors and actresses at the top of their game (Bruce Willis, Bruce Dern, Tim Blake Nelson, etc.) but Hollywood cookie-cutter cutout film making doesn't seem to jive with Michael and Mark Polish's style. Their previous movies (Northfork, Jackpot, Twin Falls Idaho) have focused specifically on the minutiae of characters and events, giving their films a surrealistic feel. The Astronaut Farmer is more direct and thus loses much that has made the Polish boys an underground success.

I'm hoping that the brothers get back to what they do well; that is, making movies that extend beyond the mainstream. Although I could see a few Polish brothers details in The Astronaut Farmer (specifically the names of characters which are paramount to the story ...Shepard, Farmer, Sunshine, etc.), there were too many other problems that destroyed this unfortunate film.

2 out of 5 stars BIG Disappointment.......2007-09-07

Slow, tired, predictable. I would expect that the screenplay could have been written by a 14 year old (if I had done it, I wouldn't admit it!) Worst movie I've seen Mr. Thornton in.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sleeper.......2007-09-06

I didn't know much about this movie but it turned out to be a great family movie. It started out real slow but it was nice to see a well thought out movie. It will make you laugh out loud.

2 out of 5 stars All dreams are not interesting.......2007-09-06

The reviewers of Ebert and Roeper liked this movie. I agree the movie has some cool scenes. When Billy Bob brings his ex-NASA pal to the barn and turns on the lights on the rocket, it was a really cool scene. Another scene is when Billy Bob was sitting in front of the rocket at night, drinking a beer and meditating on the rocket. Another cool scene is the successful take-off. They did a good job with it. The crash wasn't so good. The message of following your dreams no matter how bizarre is ok. The trouble is that a rocket is a dangerous thing. Men sometimes have to make choices and live with them. Mr. Farmer(Billy Bob) decided to drop out of the astronaut program because of a death of a family member. I agree with Bruce Willis's character here: you made the choice and you have to live with it.

The other negative of the movies is that it too slow and too quirky. A guy rearing a spacesuit riding a horse is a unusual sight, but it doesn't make for an interesting movie. It was hard for me to sympathesize with Farmer. I can relate to his dream, but I would have taken the space shuttle option without a second thought. It would have been safer for everybody involved and yet, he would have gotten into space.

I guess what summarizes the movie the best is the final scenes when "Farmer" is on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Yes, he would have been an unusual guest, but was this an interesting 3 or 5 minutes of my movie viewing time? Jay Leno interviewing a fictional guest? It was pretty boring. The movie just sort of fizzles at the end.

If it wasn't for the girl in the bikini, I would have given it 1 star!
I'm not sure how this movie got rated so high (7.2/10 on IMDB, bikini votes), it was a less than average movie, nothing special.
The story was pretty weak, many cheesy lines and instances, and the acting not so great.
It starts cheesy and ends predictable, a typical Hollywood revisited idea made worse.
Don't waste your money, rent it first.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie Overall.......2007-08-31

I remember seeing this movie on a special sneak preview occasion and I must say that I was impressed with it then and I am totally even more impresssed with it now in HD on Blu-ray. Although I usa a PS3 as my primary and only Blu-ray, it does the job very well!!! I purchased this title mainly because of its great storyline, cinematography, and the fact that its one of the last titles made on Blu-ray before Paramount's switch to HD-DVD which I think was a huge mistake! Anyhow, the movie does not feel low-budget, but offers a great sense of action, thrill, and suspense. Go watch it.

3 out of 5 stars And I'd Have Gotten Away With it Too if Not for You Meddling Kids!.......2007-08-27

Three months before Shia LaBeouf's leading role in the Summer of 2007's blockbuster Transformers, he appeared in Disturbia. And he seems to have gotten into the same character for his roles in both films: a kind of missing link from Scooby Doo's gang Scooby Doo, Where Are You! - The Complete First and Second Seasons .

"Every killer lives next door to someone" is the tagline on the movie poster, and the movie's trailer expands on the spoiler-tagline by coming right out with the detail of how a high school senior (LaBeouf) living under house-arrest discovers his neighbor is a serial killer. So all that's left untold for viewers in Disturbia is what LaBeeouf's character and friends do about it.

Disturbia makes frequent attempts at humor, but most of the intended funny moments border on corny. The target audience of this movie clearly comes off as 13 - 24 year olds...the Scream crowd Scream Trilogy - Boxed Set . But Disturbia is far from how well done the Scream films were done. Kids and young adults will find some of the humor in Disturbia amusing, but serious thriller fans will tire quickly of some of the campyness.

There are some good, thrilling moments in Disturbia, but the suspense is lost in how predictable the movie is...especially after how much of the plot is deliberately given in advance to viewers that saw the trailer.

Overall the movie was good, and the I-just-have-to-see-what-happens-next factor kept me interested enough to be entertained. But this weekend I also watched 2002's Scooby Doo - The Movie Scooby Doo - The Movie [Blu-ray] , and I found it much more entertaining than Disturbia, and Scooby Doo was even less predictable. Zoinks!

Fennessy

4 out of 5 stars Why you think you'll hate disturbia and why you shouldn't........2007-09-16

Why would people think they are going to hate Disturbia? First off any new film at all linked in any way shape or form to anything Alfred Hitchcock has done has a built in crowd of people who are going to hate it, regardless if it's good or not. Plot wise it is in some ways taking from Rear Window as the Amazon plot synopsis says, I can see that, but pretend you didn't hear that. Hitchcock's Rear Window is a great classic, this isn't that, end of story.

Secondly the way we see teens these days could annoy anyone. Growing up in an age where it's against the law for parents to discipline a kid now. Also if you've ever watched MTV, specifically "The Real World", which basically is the opposite of it's title. In the show they take seven models who they know are going to disagree and are young spoiled and immature mostly, put them in a mansion, and give them a dream job without working for anything, That's the real world? Hardly. Perhaps you have privileged kids that grew up in the suburbs, who, have never been in a fight of any sort, acting all ghetto, claiming you best give them respect when they've never earned any, and think there tough because they saw a rap video, and think turning there hat to the side makes them a gangster.
And sometimes you get directors and writers of horror flicks that I have to think base how they think teenagers act by what they've seen solely on MTV or the latest cell phone commercial. Disturbia is none of those things.

The Negatives, sure there are a lot of plot holes, but before you yell them out give the film a chance, it may answer them and may not need our feedback at the screen. Somethings get far fetched but the good out weighs the bad in my opinion.

So, what's good about Disturbia. You have a character in LaBeouf who is actually a good and likable kid, and Labeouf shows his acting chops and great range. He shows great anger and passion without saying much but more than a look in his eyes when a teacher makes an out of line comment about his father who passed. Then he shows us convincing rage when his friend plays a joke on him. None of it is over the top and it's all believable. When his mom walks up behind him in his room as he is peering out the window and scares him, he doesn't yell at her and say something like, "like mom like what are you doing in my room like totally get out", he's cool with her and jokes with her "your like a ninja or something" and it's actually funny. You have to give credit to the writers who apparently know teens beyond what they see on MTV and write relatable lines and scenarios for Labeouf that he adds to with his acting talent.

To recap, you get a good entertaining thriller from literally start to finish, with a script that is teens could relate to in a horror/thriller like Apatow does with comedy. And a rising star in Labeouf with that it factor who grows beyond the Disney kid, or the project greenlight guy, and keeps moving forward. He also pulled of a hilarious hosting job on SNL earlier in the year as well. I would recommend this for some good fun and entertainment and I think teenagers, the one's we like, will love this film.
It may not be this artistic film but I actually bit my nails, no lie.

The Hd dvd looked and sounded amazing as usual.

4 out of 5 stars not your typical kids movie.......2007-09-10

This movie is Shia laboeuf at his best. It has a generous mix of intrigue and action suspense. Overall, i thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It is meant for adults that are young at heart.

4 out of 5 stars Good HD DVD Title.......2007-08-20

I am still searching for the best movie to show off my HD DVD other than Planet Earth. Is the the movie... Well picture is great and crisp, thes sound is great, the story is pretty good, no major plot holes, the acting is very good especially from Shia LaBeouf, who is very funny. Yet even though I liked this movie it was not impressive enough for me to buy to feel the urge to buy. My advice rent before you buy.

5 out of 5 stars A THRILLER TO THE VERY END!.......2007-08-12

I have been purchasing various HD DVD titles for my new Toshiba HD A2 DVD player. I was anxious to see this movie, so decided to purchase it on HD DVD. The movie itself was a nail biter from start to finish and did not cease to keep my attention for one minute. The acting was great, the musical score added to the intensity of the film, and the story itself was intriguing. As for the HD quality, it was equally impressive, with crisp, clear images and equally clear, crisp audio. I would highly recommend this DVD to anyone who loves a great thriller and for the HD quality as well.

Product Description

Based on the best-selling novel by Joseph Girzone that touched the lives of millions, Joshua is an inspirational story about a stranger whose mysterious "supernatural" powers inspire a small town.

When Joshua moves to the outskirts of Auburn, he awakens the curiosity of the sleepy town. The locals aren't quite sure what to make of him. They don't know who he is or where he came from, but no one can shake the feeling that they've known him for years. Known only by his first name, his wisdom and compassion place him at the center of the town's attention. This attention intensifies as Joshua shatter prejudice and misconception, and even seems to perform miracles. Despite this benevolence and selfless work in the community, some remain suspicious. There are those who feat that no one in today's world would do something for nothing. Just what exactly is Joshua up to? In the end, it is the answer to that question which is nearly as extraordinary as the discovery of that same transforming power in each of their own hearts.

Tony Goldwyn, Academy Award winner F. Murray Abraham and Academy Award nominee Giancarlo Giannini star in this film, complemented with a film score byiMichael W. Smith.

The world can be divided into two camps: those who will watch Joshua reverently and gratefully, and those who will not touch it with a 10-foot pole. The reverent probably own Joseph F. Girzone's bestselling novel about a mysterious but friendly loner who shows up in a small American town and blesses every life he touches. Whites and blacks, Catholics, Protestants, and Jews will work side by side as newly recognized brethren; an estranged couple will resolve to save their marriage; the lonely and disconnected will embrace and be embraced by community; etc. The message--the healing power of Christ's love--is beyond reproach, the intentions of the filmmakers entirely benign, but there is not one whit of dramatic tension or narrative complication to any of it. The cast is stronger than usual in such religious projects (Tony Goldwyn, Oscar ® winner F. Murray Abraham, Giancarlo Giannini as the Pope), but no one has a prayer with a script that posits the hero's Christhood on the fact that 12 people show up for his going-away dinner. --Richard T. 5 out of 5 stars Joshua is a love letter for our times.......2007-09-10

Seldom do we see conteporary films without violence, gratuitous sex or some form of man's distain for another man. Joshua gives us back a time where movies were uplifting and pure in their simple message of hope for humanity. Much like "It's a Wonderful Life" before it, Joshua triumphs as a becon of light. It reminds us gently of God's love for all humanity.

    5 out of 5 stars I LOVE this movie & It's MESSAGE.......2007-09-01

I first rented this from Blockbuster, watched it six times and finally bought a copy. I love Joshua, he's such a kind, healing person in the movie. The characters are real and charming. The message is from beyond the beyond so to speak. It's beautifully done. It had me in real tears of joy, truth and a feeling of knowing as well as "being found" at the conclusion. A true movie to last a lifetime. I can't believe more people don't know about it.

For Everybody who likes a movie with a twist, get a copy of the DVD Joshua. The twist in this film is literaly out of this world, or is it? Regardless, the end of this movie will make you think twice about everything.

5 out of 5 stars Sincere Modern Day Parable.......2007-05-31

Joshua is a modern parable; what would happen if Jesus showed up in our time in a small town? Joshua tells the story of Jesus interaction with an average community. He befriends a genuine Catholic Priest in need of His mentorship, a legalistic priest in need of His love, helps to rebuild a Baptist Church, and restores hope and meaning in the lives of all He encounters.

The message of this movie is powerfully uplifting. Joshua does the things that Jesus did during His earthly ministry in a modern, contemporary way. From teaching a lonely and hurting kid to play guitar to teaching a depressed wife to cook to restoring hope and meaning in the life of a young widow, Joshua touches lives in practical and profound ways. Hmmm... sounds a lot like the Jesus found in the pages of the Bible...

This is a down to earth portrayal of the Master of Mercy, Jesus Christ. It is absolutely family friendly and it is very well made with great actors and excellent filmmaking quality. I watch this movie every now then when I need to be reminded of the way that Jesus loved people practically, as a friend, a partner on the journey of life.

Bruno is eager to kill his father and knows Guy wants to marry a senator's daughter (Ruth Roman) but can't get a divorce from his wife. Repeated viewings can't dispel the shock of the final scene in this classic 1941 romantic mystery--a brief but disorienting confrontation that suddenly inverts the heroine's mounting conviction that she's married a murderer, forcing us to reconsider virtually every scene and line of dialogue that's preceded it. It's a masterful coup de grace for director Alfred Hitchcock, who has built a puzzle around the corrosive power of suspicion, threaded with deft ambiguities that toy with dramatic conventions and character archetypes in nearly every frame.

As embodied by Joan Fontaine, who nabbed an Oscar in this second outing with the director, Lina McLaidlaw is a buttoned-up, bookish heiress whose prim exterior conceals longings for a more engaged emotional life. Her solution materializes in the darkly handsome Johnnie Aysgarth, a gambler, womanizer, and spendthrift who flirts, then pursues, and soon marries her. As Aysgarth, Cary Grant is both irresistible and sinister, capable of deceit and petty theft, as well as grander designs on his bride's impending fortune. Lina's passion for Johnnie is clouded by each new revelation about his apparent dishonesty, from clandestine gambling to real estate development schemes; more troubling are clues implicating him in the death of his best friend, and the prospect that Johnnie may be slowly poisoning Lina herself. By the time we see him ascending a darkened staircase with a suspicious glass of milk, an image made all the more indelible through the spectral glow the director captures in the glass, the evidence seems damning indeed.

In fact, even as Hitchcock stacks the deck against Johnnie, and takes full advantage of Grant's skill at conveying such menace, the director also dots his landscape with visual clues to Lina's own neurotic (and erotic) obsessions. The final scene forces us to reevaluate her behavior while leaving enough of a cloud over Johnnie to rob him, and us, of a complete exoneration. It's a wicked, unsettling payoff to a brilliantly executed thriller. --Sam Sutherland

4 out of 5 stars Penniless Playboy Marries Bookish Spinster.... .......2007-09-11

Cary Grant and Joan Fontaine star in this Hitchcock thriller. Grant plays handsome but penniless playboy John Aysgarth, with Fontaine playing shy, bookish Lina McLaidlaw. She is also a general's daughter and an heiress.

John and Lina meet accidentally on a train - a motif Hitchcock used to great effect in "The Thirty-Nine Steps," and in "Strangers on a Train."

Grant woos and weds Fontaine, but she begins to worry that he has designs on her money and wants to kill her. Does he?

The movie has an interesting climax, and though it's something of an antique now(made in 1941), it's well worth seeing.

    4 out of 5 stars Suspicion.......2007-07-03

Not the very best of Cary Grant but an often looked-for movie with good quality acting by Joan Fontaine and Mr. Grant. The eyes tell it all.

    5 out of 5 stars Suspicion.......2007-06-25

Hitchcock's psychological thriller is as tightly plotted and crisply directed as any of the master's finest works. The tension builds slowly and inexorably, as the bookish, increasingly frightened Lina waits passively for her nightly glass of (poisoned?) milk, fearing the worst. Fontaine, who appeared the previous year in Hitchcock's "Rebecca," won an Oscar for her role as the rattled wife, while Grant is superb as a cynical charmer. "Suspicion" is sure to thrill anyone in the mood for subtle romantic intrigue.

4 out of 5 stars Twisty, Entertaining and Diabolical -- In Short, Pure Hitchcock.......2007-04-13

"Suspicion" finds Joan Fontaine in the Academy Award-winning role of Lina McLaidlaw, a wealthy but shy young lady whose parents have lost hope of her finding a husband. That all changes when she meets the enormously charming Johnnie Aysgarth, who is played with a devilish ambiguity by Cary Grant. Are his intentions pure, or is he a cad? Alas, after the two are married, Lina's suspicions about her new husband become far more sinister than that. He turns out to be a compulsive liar, deeply in debt, and morally suspect; all of which leads Lina to the frightening conclusion that his cold-bloodedness may extend to murder -- first of his best friend Beaky, and then of her.

The story follows the conventions of an early twentieth century mystery novel -- specifically, it feels like something that the venerable Agatha Christie would have cooked up. There is even a female character that earns a living as a mystery writer, whose conversations about the plotlines of her own books add weight to the parallel. But what is so ingenius about the plot is that it goes beyond mere convention; imagine that you suddenly find yourself at the center of one of those mystery novels and you will understand something of the paranoia and bewilderment that Lina feels when she comes to believe that that is exactly what has happened to her. But is she right about Johnnie? Is her titular suspicion that he will try to kill her justified, or is she crazy?

Sadly, this question would be better explored in a later film by Hitchcock: 1954's Rear Window (Collector's Edition). It is explored even more deeply in two classic chillers by Ira Levin: Rosemary's Baby and The Stepford Wives, and also by their subsequent film adaptations. What goes wrong in "Suspicion" has to do with the misogynist characterization of Lina and the cheap Hollywood ending that the film slaps on. The latter is no fault of Hitchcock's -- the documentary in the special features explains that he was forced to change the bleaker climax by censors -- but those who take issue with the former will find themselves agreeing with critics who express distaste with Hitchcock's portrayals of women in his films. Lina's bland acceptance of Johnnie's faults could be passed off as a product of the times, but when she fails to do anything about her suspicions that he is plotting to kill her it is nothing short of ridiculous. Ironically, the Hollywood ending comes to the rescue here because it accidentally imbues her with a tiny degree of strength that the original climax would never have mustered.

Still, "Suspicion" is a remarkably well made film with excellent performances from Fontaine, Grant, and Nigel Bruce as Johnnie's friend Beaky. The directing is, of course, excellent -- though to get a full appreciation of what went in to it you should really watch the 30 minute documentary on the film as well. An example of one fascinating tidbit gleaned from it: in order to make a suspicious glass of milk that Johnnie brings to Lina stand out, Hitchcock contrived to place a light bulb in the glass -- giving it an eerie glow. Whatever your opinion of Hitchcock the man, one has to admit that Hitchcock the director was nothing short of genius.

5 out of 5 stars Suspicion: A Must for Movie-Lovers and Meet the Actor.......2007-04-03

It does not matter how "young" you are, it does not matter if you watch only color movies. This BW movie is ageless as Cary Grant is in his movies. He is at his best and is highly entertaining as always having an infinite amount of energy. It is fascinating to watch the movie as it evolves with a rather surprizing ending. "Grab" this movie. The picture quality is excellent. This is the type of movie that you can watch several times and never get bored. It would be unfortunate if new generations do not familiarize themselves with such classics and such actors as Cary Grant.

Rumor spreads that she's hooked up with heavy metal's poster child, aptly named Hellboy (Rake Yohn). Ryan can't stand the thought of the two of them together, so he recruits his friends Valo (Bam Margera) and Falcone (Brandon DiCamillo) to find out the truth. The pair do whatever it takes to get their evidence, even break into her house. In the meantime Ryan flirts with insanity, has run-ins with the law and even gets stabbed in the eye with a fork as his friends try relentlessly to help him forget the girl. Haggard also features special appearances by professional skateboarders Tony Hawk, Jason Ellis and Bucky Lasek.

5 out of 5 stars The Freaking Best Film Ever.......2007-08-05

This movie is hilarious but outragously explicit. Bam Margera, Ryan Dunn, Brandon Dicamillo, and Raab Himself star in a movie that unveals what true love really is, and how it's better to screw it and have fun instead. I watched this movie 8 times so far and it never gets old. Tony Hawk even has a part!!! You can watch this movie on google video.
"Haah Huhhh Hey Valo" - Raab

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-07-17

I bought this movie with the expectation that it would be funny. I didn't find it funny at all. It was bizarre and fully of "potty" humor. I love the Jackass crew, and consider myself to be a fan of Bam Margera's. This movie just didn't deliver for me.

5 out of 5 stars Love it .......2007-05-16

If you like the craziness of Jackass and Viva la bam! Then you will like this. Its very similar only theres no stunts, its a storyline with a plot! Which makes its a great comedy and a little strange but none the less its extremely funny. Just remember who's acting in it Bam Margera, Dico, Dunn, And Raab and Of course Mr. Don Vito!! as well as many more , you defiantly know with people like that you are going to have a seriously funny zany movie

    2 out of 5 stars So BAD.......2007-05-14

I bought this DVD, being a big Bam/Jackass fan...and boy, was I disappointed. There are times when the writers of this film take it too seriously, and times when they don't take it seriously enough. It was kind of all over the place for me. I think the guys should just stick with what they do best and not try to seem so "deep".

    5 out of 5 stars Hilarium Ensued.......2007-04-13

This movie was so freakin hilarious I watched twice the day I got it and I have watched it like 3 times afterwards. Excellent movie can't wait for another from Bam and the crew.

It's easy to understand why Arlington Road sat on the studio shelf for nearly a year. No, the film isn't awful; rather, it's an extremely edgy and ultimately bleak thriller that offers no clear-cut heroes or villains. In other words, Hollywood had no idea how to sell it. Director Mark Pellington's underrated directorial debut, Going All the Way, suffered the same fate, essentially because the filmmaker's presentation of suburban America often shifts dramatically within the same film. Characters are usually miserable and bordering on meltdown, no situation is straightforward, and things usually end badly. Arlington Road begins as an astute study of suburban paranoia. Michael Faraday (a face-pinched Jeff Bridges, who spends most of the film on the brink of tears) is a college professor who teaches American history courses on terrorism. He's been a conspiracy freak since his wife, an FBI agent, was killed during a botched raid that feels like a thinly fictionalized reference to the Waco tragedy. After saving the life of his next-door neighbor's child, he initially befriends the family (Tim Robbins and Joan Cusack), but soon believes the husband is a terrorist. The first half of the film mocks Faraday: he has no real evidence and is not the most stable of protagonists. Despite the fact that it was government paranoia that got his wife killed, Faraday repeats the same type of behavior. Pellington shifts gears in the second half, however, and for awhile, it seems that the film has simultaneously sunk into a cheap, high-octane brand of Hollywood entertainment and undermined its own point. Arlington Road, though, possesses a stunning ending that's a real gut punch, one that may leave you needing a second viewing to catch all of its smartly executed setup. --Dave McCoy

2 out of 5 stars Good acting, direction, script... and yet incredibly annoying..........2007-06-09

This is one of those movies in which everything seems to be in place... and yet it still just falls flat.

The acting is good, Bridges giving the strongest performance, though it's always a pleasure to see Joan Cusack in ANYTHING. The script is good, the direction is good... but the movie as a whole left me empty and a little irritated.

It's unclear what this film would like to do, aside from entertain. Should we walk out feeling that terrorists are much more complex than they seem? Should we walk out feeling unsafe and suspecting everyone? There are scenes in this movie where Jeff Bridges is teaching a class in terrorism, and he talks about how illusory our feeling of safety is... and that's fine, but I wanted one of the students to ask "So what do you want us to do? Be afraid? Worry? Never leave the house? What?" In that way the movie seems to want to just stir up a lot of fear without giving it any direction or offering any possible solution. Of course there ISN'T a solution, but I feel that this movie stirs up a lot of fear and paranoia just to draw the audience into some excitement, and then makes the audience feel bad for being excited by such a thing. I felt manipulated and annoyed after it ended.

I also think this entire subject is a little too sensitive to be trying to milk entertainment dollars out of. If you want to make a serious drama, go ahead, but don't try to both draw us in with the promise of "spooky terrorist thrills" and then want to have a serious look at the issue. I was also a little bit uncomfortable with the sheer number of children-in-extreme-peril scenes. Again, if you want to treat this subject seriously, go ahead, but don't invite us to be "thrilled" by it.

I will say that the cinematography [by Bobby Bukowski] in this film was amazing. It makes SUCH a difference simply to have some visually interesting compositions up on the screen for once, instead of having movies that have all the compositional thought of snapshots. It just gives you something to LOOK at. My favorite scenes were the one with the RED phones against the grey sky, and the fence with the grey roofs above it. Amazing! Kudos to you, guys! This was literally my favorite part of the movie.

As for the "surprise" ending-- Woo Hoo, Big Deal.

I have come to like this movie less and less since I saw it [and that was pre-9/11]. This is one I would say you could skip completely, not even wait for the video. Just skip it. It leaves you with nothing but a bad taste in your mouth.

1 out of 5 stars Absolutely horrible in all aspects.......2007-04-16

Horrible. Absolutely horrible in characters, story and atmospherics.

Jeff Bridges' character is so inconsistent and contradictory that he is not only unbelievable, but grating. The story fails in every way possible. The bad guy's plan depends not only upon being able to predict (not just manipulate) actions of multiple characters, but to intricately synchronize them, even when they have only indirect access. Even worse, their plan depends upon Bridges' character making critical inferences on a tight schedule. But the cardinal sin is that script has the bad guys attempt to subvert a key element of their own plan.

Pacing and other atmospherics can overcome substantial flaws in the script, but in this movie, they are so amateurish that they emphasize and exacerbate those problems.

    4 out of 5 stars A Good Thriller.......2007-03-09

I avoid calling this a good "political" thriller, as I think the movie director might like to bill it, because the political motivations invoked to set the villains in motion here are almost ludicrous. This movie was made before 9/11 - so the film's "terrorists" are presented as a "vast right-wing conspiracy."

However even this simple-minded conception of the threat of terrorism is muddied by Jeff Bridges' fervid ranting. Bridges plays a college professor teaching classes in government, civil liberties, and terrorism. However he seems to be almost unhinged and perhaps suspiciously complicit in terrorist acts himself as he spirals off into confused diatribes against - first lone right-wing bombers like the Unibomber - then pervasive right-wing conspiracies - then the U.S. government itself, and specifically the F.B.I. Bridges blames all these entities for his wife's death, and his lectures apparently consist of little more than projected pictures of severed limbs and bleeding bodies left in the wake of such terrorist attacks. Furthermore, he incites his students to similar suspicion and hatred. I doubt that a professor who conducted his classes in such a way would hold his job very long.

So in order to enjoy this movie, it might be best to disregard all its muddled political assumptions. Just take it as a contest between some scary villains and some good guys. Then you can sit back and appreciate the very real suspense that this movie builds.

"Arlington Road" has one of the eeriest opening sequences I've seen in any movie. And then most memorable of all - is a scene involving Joan Cusack. We usually associate Cellular Joan with mildly comic turns. But one of the scenes featuring her in this movie delivers what is perhaps the ultimate jolting fright. It will probably literally make you jump out of your seat.

    4 out of 5 stars A threat from within.......2007-02-11

This raises eyebrows on the real possibility of domestic terrorism. Unfortunately, this is a legitimate fear, especially now. That's what makes this movie so nerve-jangling.
Jeff Bridges plays Michael Faraday, a college professor who teaches a course on terrorism. Tim Robbins plays his mysterious neighbor that raises some suspicion.
This movie does have some minor flaws. Although Jeff and Tim are fine actors, this wasn't their best performances. Plus, the story seems a little choppy, but the ending will make you disregard any of this. Your heart will be racing at the climax, without a doubt.
