Twenty years' worth of country superstar Reba McEntire's engaging music videos are included on Reba: Video Gold 1. The first thing that stands out is their consistent production quality. There isn't a single video from, say, the 1980s--an era that left a lot of artists with embarrassing promotional artifacts--in this collection, beginning with the 1986 "Whoever's In New England," which casts McEntire as a stay-at-home wife whose busy husband may be cheating on her during business trips. "Sunday Kind of Love" takes a very different approach, setting its pop ballad in a World War II ballroom while, elsewhere, a wounded husband returns home from the war. Another unexpected setting accompanies McEntire's cover of Don Everly's "Cathy's Clown," in which the song's hard questions about a jilted man are transferred to the Wild West. "Fancy" is the biggest cliché in this anthology, in which Reba plays a big star returning to her rustic roots, while "Is There Life Out There" finds her portraying a beleaguered waitress trying to go to school and be a devoted wife and mother all at once. (Huey Lewis plays her spouse.)

"Does He Love You," a duet with Linda Davis, is a fairly tortured story of a man in love with both of the women singing the song. It feels silly, but the whole thing is ultimately played for a laugh. (Rob Reiner, of all people, makes a little cameo appearance.) "Why Haven't I Heard from You" is the most fun video here, a sassy musical set in a Grecian beauty parlor; McEntire's appealing but comically rubber face proves a lot of fun. "If You See Him/If You See Her," a duet with Brooks and Dunn, is a very satisfying performance with a little story that finds Kix Brooks playing a mutual friend to both ex-lovers Ronnie Dunn and McEntire. Things take a sentimental turn toward the end with McEntire's cover of Kenny Rogers' "Sweet Music Man," as well as "What Do You Say" (a maudlin story of a mom dying of cancer) and "He Gets That from Me" (the story of a mother and son getting by after the death of the family patriarch). --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Reba.......2007-08-03

This DVD and the Vol I are a must for all Reba fans, it is a compilation of all the videos that were produced to support her vast array of hits. CMT has been such an important part of the promotion of the modern country star and so great effort went into the production of these videos, they are short stories set to music. If you like Reba's music especially as a non US resident where you cant see the videos on a regular basis, this has to be added to your collection.

Amazon.com essential video

This 1975 film sits near the top of any list of the best films of the 1970s, perhaps in the top five and, in some people's minds, at the pinnacle itself. Robert Altman, at his most Altmanesque, spins together plot strands involving two dozen people over the course of one particularly busy weekend in Music City, USA. Though several of the story lines deal with country-western stars--played by Henry Gibson, Ronee Blakley and Karen Black--the plot also deals with the country scene's wannabes, the business people who pull the strings and the operative for a mysterious presidential candidate who is trying to get the de facto endorsement of some of the country stars by having them appear at a rally for him. (The unknown but rocketing presidential aspirant was eerily echoed the next year, when Jimmy Carter came out of nowhere to win the presidency.) Blakley is heartbreakingly fragile as a Loretta Lynn-like singer on the verge of total mental meltdown, while Lily Tomlin is outstanding as a housewife-gospel singer who has a dalliance with a randy folk-rock cad, perfectly played by Keith Carradine (who won an Oscar for his song "I'm Easy"). The cast also includes Jeff Goldblum, Scott Glenn, Keenan Wynn, Shelley Duvall, Geraldine Chaplin (hilarious as a fatuous British TV journalist), Barbara Harris, Michael Murphy, and Ned Beatty, with cameos by Elliott Gould and Julie Christie as themselves. Next to Mean Streets, perhaps the most influential film of the decade. --Marshall Fine

4 out of 5 stars Great Film Old DVD Criterion edition?.......2007-08-01

This was produced at the end of the 90's as an early generation DVD and is pretty good quality for the time, anamorphic transfer, and full length Altman commentary... Maybe it could be revisited by Criterion but for present it's the only edition of Altman's landmark 1970's ensemble drama, a satire on American politics, C&W music, and virtually everything else... 24 characters feature, and director handles their ballet with a matchless grace and ease, reminding just what a great filmmaker he was... A career best!...

5 out of 5 stars Nashville.......2007-07-04

One of the greatest films of the 1970s--or any decade-- Altman's sprawling masterpiece cleverly satirizes both the wholesome image of the country-music industry and the values of the Me Generation. But the enduring strength of the film lies in the hands and hearts of the many talented actors-- Lily Tomlin, Ned Beatty, Jeff Goldblum, Karen Black, and Shelley Duvall, to name a few, who populate this rich cinematic mosaic. Real-life singer Ronee Blakely stands out as a troubled star modeled after Loretta Lynn. In yet another grand Altman-esque gesture, the actors composed their own songs for "Nashville" --and what a soundtrack it is!

4 out of 5 stars NASHVILLE.......2007-05-12

This is probably my favoirte 'modern' film. It's not my favorite all-time film, that is still SUNSET BLVD, but this one, taken at its original release, was the most innovative, stunning picture I'd ever seen. It's fragmentary, non-linear plotline, dazzling collection of actors, and incredible diretorial style was miles beyond anything else on the planet in '75. The things that Altman did here were radical, then, and have influenced filmmaking ever since. Such highly praised crap as PULP FICTION and CRASH wouldn't exist if it wasn't for NASHVILLE. Their over-hyped directorial styles are just copies of this original. Of course, i'm a total sucker for most of the other Altmans, too.
The lower rating is because of the quality of the disc, a very early dvd (and laser,) with no extras... no commentary, on a film that cries out for one.

2 out of 5 stars The Emperor's New Clothes..........2007-05-02

Why is everybody slobbering all over themselves about what a great film this is? It has moments that are interesting and worthwhile but it's so nebulous, slow and decidedly not "country" that I for one can't recommend it as being worth nearly three hours of one's time. Overall, what crappy singing for a movie about Music City! While country music generally isn't all that intellectually profound or politically astute, its stars (especially in the 60s and 70s before it went down the cartoon cookie-cutter toilet), were musically talented and believed in what they were singing. Henry Gibson, Lily Tomlin, and Karen Black together couldn't carry a tune in a bucket if all three were holding on to it for dear life! Ronee Blakely does do a credible job as a singer and her character at least approaches believability as a tragic country ingenue, but as for the rest of them, come on! I wonder how many of the 5 star reviewers heaping praise on this film actually come from the south or grew up on country music? Merle Haggard, George Jones, Willie and Waylon, Tom T. Hall, Hank Jr, Kenny Rogers, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton and many others were at or near the top of their game in '75 and a lot of their songs are musically worthwhile, whatever one may think of the lyrics or perspective. This film plays like an uninitiated outsider's simplistic, if fairly lighthanded, take on what makes middle America tick. I actually find a lot of Altman's work to be somewhat overrated and what some call genius, I tend to see as rudderless wandering in need of a spirited editor.

In all fairness to the late director though, other Nashville reviewers are correct when they point out that the laid back sensibilties of the 70s are lamentably long gone in this often nightmarishly visceral 21st century world of ours. As such, the fact that this film has not aged well is not altogether Altman's fault; I think that the attention span of the average moviegoer 30+ years ago was probably much better suited to a meandering film like this. Ultimately, it's really the bad country music that I reject more than anything. All in all, I don't regret having watched Nashville, I just can't help but question the glowing praise that smacks of dreamy courtesans in the midst of the emperor's new clothes...

4 out of 5 stars GOING TO THE COUNTRY-MUSIC THAT IS.......2007-04-18

The late Robert Altman was the past master of weaving a simple plot line and existential characters in order to form very interesting slices of the life in the American experience, with a wry sense of humor about that experience to boot. Shortly before his death he had produced Prairie Home Companion, essentially a Midwestern version of the presently reviewed film Nashville. He had an ear and an eye for the sometimes absurd characters who are part of the American landscape and those senses do not fail him here, although there is just a touch of datedness in the story line of the film.

Of course, the subject here, given away by the title, is a look at country music, as least how it looked in 1975, intertwined with a indeterminate but assumingly populist presidential campaign by a third party candidate. The mix of politics and music is an interesting choice although whether the electoral campaign could stand in for that of ex-Alabama Governor George Wallace on the right or an insurgent Eugene McCarthy-type campaign on the left is far from clear, probably purposefully so. All the characters one would expect when one's only sense of the Nashville country music scene is the Grand Old Opry are here; the mainstream male and female country singers modeled on George Jones and Loretta Lynn; the country folk `crashers' trying to cash in on the popularity of genre; the wannabes working the open mikes off the main street in order to get a break; and, the truly talentless all striving to get ahead in the dog eat dog but lucrative world of country music. All looking for the main chance. All driven to be on a stage somewhere in front of some audience even if that of an eccentric presidential candidate. The sub-plot, which in the end holds the action together, is the random violence afoot then, as now, that is seemingly an endemic part of the American Way.

There are several outstanding musical performances highlighted by the film's Loretta Lynn character, Ronee Blaklee. Her rendition of Dues still sounds good after over 30years. Try to find her work. The late Vassar Clements on the fiddle also should receive kudos.

5 out of 5 stars Great dvd.......2005-12-28

A few years ago I was in Nashville and I was just getting to like George Strait. I walked into one of the stores to see what they had. This cd was there and I decided to buy it. It was my first, and certanly not my last, GS cd.
I loved all the songs ,a few I had heard (at the time) before, and I loved the talking parts, almost like I was there. I had to get the dvd. When I went back my family and I went to the Hall of Fame and they had the dvd. I got it and I loved it.
The song "The cowboy rides away" I found out was shortend yet lengthend. If you have heard the cd you know what I am talking about.Plus there are more songs on the dvd than the cd. Needless to say, this cd was the cd that kicked off my love for GS songs and music. If you have not heard it get it. It is a part of history.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Need this one for your collection!.......2007-05-16

When reading the reviews, you can tell that the majority of them are Marty Robbins's fans. What about those of you out there who have never heard of him? He was the first country music artist to receive an acadamy award for his Country-Pop hit for "My Woman, My Woman, My Wife". He was a songwriter, actor, book-writer and music artist. Marty died in December, 1982. He was ahead of his time in writing and recording songs. I would strongly recommend that you hear examples of some of his songs that are available with various CD's for sale on Amazon. You will find out - he was truly a great artist & very versitile in the different forms of music. His last hit was a song called "Some memories just won't die". This is fitting. When you hear him sing (even for the first time) - you will be amazed. You will discover that his music plus the memories of fans who watched him perform while he was alive "just won't die" as well. You might be surprised - for you might find out it will be the same for you after watching this program. For those who are collector's of Marty Robbins - This is a must!

5 out of 5 stars What a treasure!.......2007-05-12

We are so fortunate to have these old films of Marty singing his songs and I am so glad that I ordered it. Marty was one of a kind and there will never been another one like him. No one has a voice like his! He always sang his songs with such ease, and had a big voice for such a small man.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive anthology from a prodigiously talented man.......2007-04-25

One of the real tragedies in music was Marty Robbins' early death in 1982. He - and we - never got to savor what might have been a career autumn, where he might have had a chance to deepen further an artistry, that, taken in hindsight, was mind-boggling in its wide range of styles. A country boy at heart, he always kept the base of his music there, but he showed how thoroughly adept he could be at Hawaiian, jazz, reggae, rock n' roll of course, gospel, and just plain old pop. He could do honky-tonk authentically. And he was the true master of the gunfighter and trail songs. The word here is versatile - to the gills!

Robbins had an astonishing vocal range, which could encompass deep, brooding lows to the sweetest tenor falsetto imaginable; take a listen here to the tropically-infused "Ka-lu-a," which is sung with real tenderness, and the upward switches into falsetto is masterfully done, e with a sound that can be metaphorically described as a golden ribbon of honey.

What's so rewarding about this collection, is that it shows his evolution through probably nearly thirty years of performing. It is fortuitous that so many video-documented performances survive. We see Marty from the clean-cut 1950s boy to the mustachoied hipster look of the 1970s. The voice remained intact throughout (his intonation and diction are both models of impeccable musicality), and his identification with the lyrics more deeply personal as time marched on. His rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone" is poignant, moving, and you get a great sense of melancholy, almost as if he knew his time was getting shorter. Elsewhere, we get his classic rendition of "Singing the Blues," which , when you compare it to Guy Mitchell's monster-seller, shows Marty to have the much better vocal production and is livelier in expression. We also get all his signature tunes, such as "A White Sport Coat," "El Paso," "Don't Worry," "Ruby Ann," "Devil Woman," "My Woman, My Wife," among so many others, encompassing all his styles. We also get some bonus clips, from what appear to be some rare, early kinescopes.

What makes this release different from his commercial audio versions of these songs is the joy of seeing Marty perform these songs. A born performer, you see the music just oozing out from his pores. Though he displays an involvement and energy consistently, giving his all, he is so at ease and relaxed being a showman, you get the feeling that it was his natural metier.

We also get some thoughtful commentaries in between songs by Merle Haggard, Barbara Mandrell, and Robbins' son, among others, and the love all of them show is palpable.

Watching this produces a bittersweet feeling. Marty should have had so many more years, yet, he left no short measure of his prodigious talents. Here's to one of the true kings of music; long may his art endure.

5 out of 5 stars great music and memories.......2007-01-17

I saw this show on PBS and loved it. Marty Robbins is an artist for all seasons.

My Mom LOVES this DVD. She has always been a huge Marty Robbins fan. When we put this in the player she oohed and ahhed at the start of every song and love all of the commentary. She even stopped it occassionally to add her own commentary, too. A must have for true Marty Robbins fans!

Shania Twain's Up! Close and Personal concert is both a follow-up to her bestselling 2002 album and an intimate show featuring Alison Krauss and Union Station. It's hard to imagine two superstars in the same general style being as different as Twain and Krauss, and it's surreal to see the latter singing backup on "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under," but the combination works. Up! featured both pop and country versions of its 19 songs, and while the intent here is to favor the country approach, the bluegrass sound of AKUS is more listenable than the album's twang and pedal steel, and "From This Moment On" could almost be mistaken for a Krauss song. It's still Twain's show all the way, though, as she sings lead for every song, including "I'm Gonna Getcha Good," "You're Still the One," and a cover of "You Shook Me All Night Long," which her husband Mutt Lange produced for AC/DC many moons ago. Dressed in relatively conservative black leather (!) and forgoing the aerobics, step dancers, and other pyrotechnics of older shows, Twain is personable and chatty with the audience that surrounds the stage (though no one is invited up), so much so that she can only get through 12 songs in the hourlong show. A 25-minute behind-the-scenes featurette helps fill out the disc. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars Shania who???? .......2007-05-09

LOL I don't mind Shania, but to be honest I just got this because Alison Krauss and Union Station are her backing band for this live acoustic concert - adn they're brilliant! What generous, self-effacing people AK+US are to do this. Shania comes off as sounding good but a complete ditz in this.

4 out of 5 stars Shania is Captivating!.......2007-03-13

Shania is delightful and captivating in this relaxing show where she sings many songs from UP! and other favorites. She looks great and seems to enjoy being herself with the audience and the backup band. Union Station is excellent playing and singing with her. And Alison Krauss and Shania have fun bantering back and forth, as well as producing wonderful harmonies.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST for Shania &/or AKUS Fans.......2007-01-12

Shania sounds better when she sings with AKUS (Alison Krauss & Union Station). Their bluegrass style suits Shania's voice and range perfectly. I wish they'd do this again! Alison and Union Station are EXCELLENT on their own, but when performing together with Ms. Twain, they all sound better. All the music on this DVD is good. The talking you can 'fast forward' through (I found it only semi-interesting the first time around). Shania's voice is complemented very nicely by AKUS' musical talent. There is a much more down-home feel & sound to Shania's songs when accompanied by AKUS - it doesn't sound "packaged" like her usual material (for which she's been criticized - I think unfairly - by the industry in the past). Worth the $18. if you are either a Shania fan or an AKUS fan, and definitely worth it if you are a fan of both, like me! I'd certainly like to find the songs on audio CD if possible [..]

5 out of 5 stars Shania's best DVD so far!!.......2006-11-01

With a very similar set-up as Elvis' Comeback Special - small audience,
no yellin' no stompin' like on the Üp Concert, dressed up in black leather
as well, Shania Twain together with the superb Alicia Krauss & The Union
Station present us a wonderful show with her biggest hits. The whole
atmosphere is very "catchy" and shows us constantly that this woman
can really sing and does not need those sometimes loud and molesting
POP bands behind her. This show definitely sounds more country-like
which really were her roots when she started out. No doubt, this
is the best and most authentic Shania you can listen to nowadays.
She's having a good time as well and explains quite profoundly the
whereabouts of each and every song she's gonna sing for us. A real
pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars Real musicianship.......2006-08-22

Every song (all written by Shania and her husband) on this DVD is undeniably catchy, but I admit I bought it solely because Alison Krauss and Union Station were the back up band. I kept wondering how this bluegrass oriented band was going to pull off her up tempo pop hits, but they deliver every time in spades. They are consumate, and incredibly generous, musicians, letting Shania be the star, but adding their unique touch and bringing each song to another level. As she said herself, they make her look good. That being said, Shania proves that she can keep up with the "big boys" in terms of musicianship, and that she deserves her success.

Nothing encourages one to ignore those silly contradictions in Shania Twain's music (is she country? is she pop?) like a collection of her highly playful videos. The Platinum Collection rolls right over boundaries of tradition and genre with its concentration of imaginative, often surprising visuals. "The Woman in Me," for instance, is set among Egypt's pyramids, while "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" finds a stunning Twain fronting a band of mindless hunks in a funny reversal of Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" video. "You're Still the One," easily one of Twain's most affecting songs, still holds up as a softly erotic short film. Even Twain's more prosaic videos (the go-kart mania of "You Win My Love") bear repeat viewing, but it's her heck-with-it aesthetic that leads to such unexpected sights as Irish step dancing in "Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)." Then, of course, there are those hot pants in "Rock This Country!" Long may Shania wave. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Interesting view at Shania's development as a singer.......2007-08-01

I can't say that I am a big fan of her early work, though there are some good songs in there. However for a true Shania fan this is a must have because you can clearly see not only costume changes but even how she sings a song. It is like watching a kid grow up but in roughly an hour+. If you are only interested in her later work, the concert at Chicago would be a better dvd for you. I have both and like them for different reasons. Overall a good piece of work, with my only regret being that eventually there will have to be a "Platinum 2", and likely there will be duplications on the second one. Minor, but still it would be nice if music and movies did not re-hash themselves just to make even more money.

5 out of 5 stars Shania Twain Platinum Collection DVD.......2007-07-06

This is a great DVD - Shania Twain is awesome. I actually thought I ordered the CD but I accidentally ordered the DVD what a PLEASANT surprise. I highly recommend this DVD!!!

5 out of 5 stars Up Up Up.......2006-11-10

Great Collection! This really showcases Shania's different styles of video. A fun DVD. "From This Moment" is my husband's and my favorite!

2 out of 5 stars Barbi Doll.......2006-04-02

I don't really like video collections. Live music is so much more interesting. The only exception I can think of to that rule is the video collection by Tom Petty, because he put out the most imaginative and well produced videos.

I'd much rather see Shania actually singing and relating to an audience than lipping it to these recorded songs. The only songs on this vid that are live are the last two, and one of them is the boring Rock This Country, one of her weakest songs, a sort of takeoff on Donnie and Marie's I'm A Little Bit Country, A Little Bit Rock and Roll.

It's mostly all glitz and glitter. It's mostly just seeing the latest outfit and makeup Shania is wearing. That is superficial. Let's have a real person instead. I don't care about the outfits and the makeup. Seeing her pretend to sing just doesn't cut it. I've heard these exact versions of the songs plenty of times. Come On Over is a fantastic album.

She looks great, particularly in her Hawaiian look during the romantic You've Got A Way. I love that song and I love her Hawaiian look. It's all so romantic. I'm not wild about her look when she's wearing slacks or sweat pants. It makes the bottom half of her look so ordinary and boring. She looks so much better in something feminine. Sporty Spice is not a turn on and is not romantic.

If you want to turn it up a notch in your music videos, pick up somebody's live performance. It's a whole different feeling. Granted, some of them aren't the greatest, but when they are good, they are a lot better than this. You actually see a real person on stage. Not just Barbi Doll in her newest outfit and makeup.

3 out of 5 stars Her music videos, part 1.......2006-03-21

Her most recent hits are NOT included in this collection. This package covers up to "Come On Over"... and includes most of her hits from the 90s and early 00s. This is, though, an interesting look at how a superstar made the transition from country bumpkin' to international "don't-peg-me-as-country-anything-my-image-is-universal" pop star. The package starts with Shania's country roots as she sings her earliest hits and looks more like a Loretta Lynn-wannabe than the Sporty Spice clone her handlers transformed her into when "Come On Over" launched her into superstar territory. It also shows how flashy music videos progressed over the past 15 years. Unless you're a diehard Shania fan from her early years, you'll only be watching the second half of this collection. There's even a couple of live concerts clips to break up her later videos, which have lots to do with "artsy" and little to do with the lyrics. If you're into close-ups of her piercing eyes and high cheekbones, you won't be disappointed. She's one of the most photogenic singer/songwriters this hemisphere has offered in decades... and some of the songs are catchy, too.

Great singer, good songwriter, underrated guitar player: Nashville Rebel supplies ample evidence that Waylon Jennings (1937-2003) was one of country music's best. Although the time frame (from 1970 to 1984) of this hour-long, 18-song collection is pretty narrow in the context of his entire career, it's revealing. When Jennings sang "Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line" on Johnny Cash's TV show in '70, he had already recorded at least ten albums (he'd also been in Buddy Holly's backing band, and had famously given up his seat on the plane that crashed with Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson on board) and was still a fairly standard, pompadoured product of the Nashville assembly line. But just four years later, as we see in four songs taken from Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, he'd become the bearded, long-haired outlaw who helped bring country to the rock 'n' roll generation. Notwithstanding some great pedal steel guitar playing by Ralph Mooney, these latter performances are subdued, maybe too much so, but Jennings' charisma and talent are still apparent. Much better are the five previously-unseen tunes from a TV show produced by singer-record producer (and Waylon's brother-in-law) Jack Clement, which include "Lonesome, "On'ry and Mean" and "Amanda" and find Jennings and his band sounding a good deal more lively and committed. And best of all are the last five live tunes, which include Jennings' most popular material, like "Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)," "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys," "Good-Hearted Woman," and "Are You Sure Hank Done it This Way" (the final selections include three videos and two TV commercials). Although Jennings went on to form the Highwaymen with Cash, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson, he never got the crossover acclaim that came to the others. That could be because he wasn't as iconic as Cash, as gregarious as Nelson, or a movie star like Kristofferson; or perhaps it was due to his substance abuse problems. Whatever, Waylon Jennings, a rebel indeed, is well-served by this release. --Sam Graham

4 out of 5 stars Great Waylon DVD.......2007-02-16

Oh, I wish I could find more of these - I've always been a Waylon fan and have seen him in person several times - great performer and being able to see him again was great. Not enough songs on the DVD, tho - even tho 20 is quite a bit. Loved the first one with his clean cut look, but it just wasnt't the look we've all been used to.

Got my husband up to even dance to "Are you Sure Hank done it this a way". Can't just sit and listen to the music.

5 out of 5 stars Never be another like him.......2007-01-19

First let me say that I am an absolute diehard Hoss fan, so my review may be a tad slanted. I received the boxed set and the DVD for Christmas. I haven't watched the DVD yet, but I have listened to cds - over & over. I love the way the discographers put this box set together. The songs run in chronological order from the admittedly phonetic (and sometimes pigdin Cajun) rendering of "Jole Blon" (thank Buddy Holley for this recording)to the final years of his career. This chronology allows the listener to truly appreciate Waylon's growth not just as a singer, but also as a songwriter, a musician, and a man. While I have always loved Waymore's "Lonesome, Onry, & Mean" era (I go crazy over his growls and whup whups), I have now become a fan of his early years - the years when his voice, smooth as velvet, was a far cry from what it became. The man was awesome throughout his life and this box cd set is the best way for the newbie Waylon fan to learn his music and old fans such as myself to put it all into perspective.

The biggest regret of my life is not seeing Hoss on stage. Don't make the mistake of not buying this cd set - it will set you on the path to real country music - country music as it is meant to be. If you listen to 98.1 and adore Keith Urban, maybe this set will liberate you from the clutches of Music Row's clones.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent video companion to recent 4-CD set.......2006-11-22

This collection of 20 segments includes vintage television appearances, live concert footage from Opryland, music videos and a pair of TV commercials. It's a superb look at Jennings as both a live performer and a commercial commodity. The program opens as then-defunct hippie affectations were cropping up in the oddest of mainstream places. The 1970 appearance on the Johnny Cash show still finds Jennings Nashville-slick with his well-kempt hair, but the band displays extra-Nashville influences with a double-neck guitar and a flower-power sticker on the electric bass.

The leap to track 2 picks up four years later with a signature appearance on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert television program. These segments find Jennings' hair and beard grown out, and his music and band tuned to fit a rock audience. Jennings plays country rock (including excellent versions of Billy Joe Shaver's "Honky Tonk Heroes" and "Slow Rollin' Low"), but with the showmanship of a rock band. Aside from Red Rhodes western shirt, Jennings' group looks like a rock band, and they play with enough aggression to please the longhairs, headbands and rednecks in the audience. The staging and camera work are superb.

Next up are five segments taken from Jack Clement's TV show that feature a similar band, but with a different vibe. Set in a studio Jennings and band pull back ever so slightly, playing as much for each other as for the cameras. Jennings smiles his way through an extended take of "I'm a Ramblin' Man," offering up some awesome lead guitar as the band jams; Willie Nelson's "It's Not Suppose to be That Way" shows Jennings gripping presence as a ballad singer. A sit-down solo acoustic take of "Waymore's Blues," complete with lit cigarette in his guitar's headstock, is mesmerizing in the ease with which he segues from singing to chatting with his wife, Jessi Colter. The camerawork isn't up to that of the Kirshner shows, with zooms and tight close-ups that create more of a documentary feel.

Film of a 1978 Opryland concert finds Jennings still a potent force on stage, but working through a catalog of chart-topping hits is simply a less urgent showcase. The difference between the Kirshner and Opryland audiences is stark, with the former standing and hollering their encouragement, and the latter (primarily industry executives) seated, listening and applauding politely. "Are You Sure Hank Done it This Way" would surely have had the crowd on their feet just about anywhere but Opryland. The video is well shot and edited, with multiple cameras, video overlays and dissolves.

The mid-80s music video for "The Conversation" features Jennings and Hank Jr. in a barroom, engaged in a musical discussion about Hank Sr. "Never Could Toe the Mark" is choreographed as an intimate band sound check and "America" is a highly-produced piece whose stock images seem more like the director's vision that Jennings'. All three are interesting additions, but none of them pack the charge of the live appearances. The closing pair of TV commercials, particularly the 1976 spot for "Wanted! The Outlaws," are a treat, particularly for those who came to Jennings after his mid-70s peak.

This DVD is a superb companion to RCA/Legacy's recently released 4-CD Waylon Jennings box set. The earlier segments demonstrate the rock-like edginess Jennings brought to his music and the stage, and the later segments show the mainstream eventually catching up. Throughout, Jennings comes through as an individual bent on playing his music his way. The video transfers are excellent, and the sound is very good throughout. 5 out of 5 stars Get this AND the NASHVILLE REBEL 4-CD box set.......2006-11-06

First off, I'd like to begin by clearing up a couple misconceptions:
1) this is NOT the 1966 film of the same name;
2) there is NOT a 100-page booklet included.
Both these points have erroneously appeared on a number of online-retailer websites.

This IS a companion piece to the acclaimed 4-CD box set of the same title.

The DVD menu opens with the flipping thru of a Waylon scrapbook...flipping a bit too fast to really study the pix but that's OK as most are included in the lavish 144 page book that comes with this DVD's big brother box set of the same title, also in stores now.

Here's what you'll see:

1. Only Daddy That'll Walk The Line
- from the Johnny Cash Show, 1970. Waylon had just won a Grammy for MacArthur Park and JRC congratulates him on that significant accomplishment. Waylon throws in that even JR ain't done that yet. Before launching into 'ONLY DADDY' they exchange the now-familiar comments about the time they shared a room at the Fontaine Bleu apartments in Madison -- where JR points out that during that era he felt that 'Waylon wouldn't ever amount to nuthin...'. He was sure wrong about that!! ;-)

2. Honky Tonk Heroes
3. Louisiana Woman
4. This Time
5. Slow Rollin Low
- trax 2-5 are from "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert", 1974. Sounds a helluvalot like the September recordings in Texas that same year. As opposed to the August 1978 'Lost Outlaw Performance' -which was attended exclusively by a very boring bunch of industry executives- these songs were recorded before a typical 70's crowd!!! :-)

6. Lonesome, Onry & Mean
7. Ramblin Man
8. It's Not Supposed To Be That Way
9. Amanda
10. Waymore's Blues
- now, for the real treat....when he was producing Waylon's 'DREAMING MY DREAMS' album, brother-in-law/outlaw Cowboy Jack Clement was also doing a bit of taping. We've previously seen only but a clip of 'LONESOME, ON'RY & MEAN' in Waylon's official vid-ography -- but now, we get the song in its entirety as well as the 4 others listed above. For those fascinated with Waylon's formidable geetar-pickin, you'll find the extended version of 'RAMBLIN' MAN' to be well worth the price of admission. I especially enjoyed 'WAYMORE'S BLUES' which has Waylon sitting on a park bench, playing his acoustic, alongside Lil Miss Jessi. There's some great banter between the two --- as well as a real good hint that there's more to come!!!

11. Luckenbach, TX
12. Mammas, Don't Let Your....
13. Good Hearted Woman
14. Are You Ready...
15. Are You Sure Hank....
- trax 11-15 are from the aforementioned 'Lost Outlaw Performance' taped at Opryland, 1978.08.12

16. The Conversation (w/ Hank Jr)
17. Never Could Toe The Mark
18. America
- while many have seen these music vids before, they are great examples of the post-crazy-year portion of this fabulous sampling of the 14 year period in Waylon's career covered by this disc.

19. Commercial for Waylon's Greatest Hits
20. Commercial for Outlaws album
- while not in chrono-order [?] the inclusion of these rare TV spots is a great way to finish off the collection...especially with so many of Waylon's die-harder fans not having even been born when they originally aired.

I'm still hoping that RCA/Legacy will release a deluxe version of the NASHVILLE REBEL music and vid set -- as they did with Cash's THE LEGEND. Considerably more expensive, the deluxe version of that title includes a 12x16 hard-cover coffee table book, additional music and vids as well as s limited edition litho and some other goodies.

Hummm, and wouldn't it be great if it all were packaged in a real, hand-tooled leather coat!!

Be sure and get this DVD as soon as you're able. I believe the retail is 12.99 and can be had for as little as 9.99 -- so be sure to shop around to find the best buy.

But as another reviewer explained, Glen's performances and the rarity of these performances do in fact make up for the less than perfect sound and vision of this programme. I would highly recommend the dvd 'Glen Campbell In Concert' recorded a few years back (2002 I think)Glen is in top form, picture is crystal and the sound...THE SOUND is superb!(Dolby Digital 5.1!)
Hope this helps

5 out of 5 stars A Great Blast From The Past.......2007-05-28

Having been there playing Bass with Glen on these concerts, watching them now is rather like entering a time machine. Bob Felts was on Drums, Carl Jackson was on Guitar and Banjo and Dennis McCarthy was our Conductor.
I always considered Glen to be ahead of his time as a country singer, moreover, his understanding and interpretation of the pop music of the day paved the way for todays stars such as Steve Wariner, Vince Gill and Keith Urban.
The London Musicians were also a pleasure to work with.
Thank God for Glen Campbell!

5 out of 5 stars WHAT A TALENT.......2007-05-07

I was blown away by this awesome dvd of Glen Campbell in his prime. Most of this rare footage was taken from an english tv performance. What a great singer, guitarist and all aroung great entertainer. The picture quality isn't the greatest but,the performances more than make up for it. Check out the guitar instrumental of "AIN'T NO SUNSHINE"

4 out of 5 stars Great Performances!.......2007-02-15

This DVD captures Campbell at what was probably the peak of his career. His voice is exceptional and his stage presence is right on. There are a number of his greatest hits included as well as some seldom heard additions. I liked the modified version of "Galveston" and his performance of "Mary in The Morning". The section pairing Campbell with songwriter Jimmy Webb is a treat. The two talents were a great combination. Campbell's rendition of MacArthur Park is one of my favorites.

The DVD quality does leave much to be desired. The video is VHS quality and the sound is a little scratchy at times. However, for the price and the number of performances included I suppose these limitation should be overlooked.

I believe this would be a loved addition to any Glen Campbell Fan's collection.

4 out of 5 stars Great But Too Short!!.......2007-02-24

My wife and I have been big fans of Toby Keith since we heard "Beer For My Horses" on a country compilation cd. This dvd is a welcome addition to our Toby Keith collection. There are only five videos on this dvd:
"Should've Been A Cowboy","He Ain't Worth Missing","A Little Less Talk And A Little More Action","Who's That Man" and "Dream Walkin'".

Although it is short in content the videos are all great with excellent sound and vision quality. I guess this will have to do until a full concert dvd of Toby Keith becomes available.

5 out of 5 stars re: Tody in Doby.......2004-07-16

Well lets see, I recently purchased a DVD player having worn videos down to their last magnetic fiber. Toby Keith was the first musician I went out to purchase. I have his CD's on in my fabulous gold porche all day while I drive and twirl my curly locks on the freeway. This is real stomping, put your foot down, slap you lips and cords into gear music. Fernominal. Depending on which route I take to Moms I usually get through the first song and then my stomach gets the better of me and I rush in for homemade burgers and potato salad. This DVD has a similar effect because I take it everywhere with me. Mom lets me play it at hers while she's in the garage making homemade icecream but I have to turn it off when we are having dinner as its been a family tradition to eat at the table and not too indulge in TV dinners. I love this guy!!! If I was female I would love him in a more rude way but I'm not and I have the cords to prove it and the receding hairline. Gee, maybe I should get a hat like his to cover my shiny crown. Still, my baseball cap should surfice for the time being. Line dancing is what you need to adopt when you buy this. Do a quick line before you hit the road and you are on your way to country heaven.

Fabulous...

5 out of 5 stars luv him.......2004-06-21

I am so(...) in love with Toby!!! I'm so completely obsessed with him. I'd give anything to be with him. Well, about the dvd. Its great!!! Whos that man will kill you. You just wanna hold him so he wont be sad. And every time he closes his eyes i melt. He is so sexy in these videos you'll go crazy knowing you cant have him. Not to mention him having the sexiest voice ever. I recommend this dvd to any true Toby lover!!

1 out of 5 stars Caution!.......2004-03-31

Amazon does not tell you that this DVD "Best of" collection only has 5 songs/videos on it. If you are looking for Toby's current hits, you will be greatly disappointed. And, while Amazon will allow you to return it, if unopened, the shipping charges each way will not be refunded. $6 worth of to and from shipping charges for a $7.99 DVD isn't worth the effort. Save your money, and hope that Toby releases a real "collection" someday.
