Zach Braff (from the TV show Scrubs) stars in his writing/directing debut, Garden State--normally a doomed act of hubris, but Braff pulls it off with unassuming charm. An emotionally numb actor in L.A., Andrew (Braff) comes back to New Jersey after nine years away for his mother's funeral. Andrew avoids his bitter father (Ian Holm, The Sweet Hereafter) and joins old friends (including the superb Peter Sarsgaard, Boys Don't Cry) in a round of parties. Along the way he meets a girl (Natalie Portman, Beautiful Girls) with demons of her own; bit by bit the two offer each other a little healing. Plotwise, Garden State is familiar stuff, a cross between The Graduate and a Meg Ryan movie, but Braff has an eye for goofy but resonant visual images, an ear for lively dialogue, and a great cast. The result is surprisingly fresh and funny. --Bret Fetzer

I Made You a Shirt.......2007-09-07
Maybe it is just part of my character, but for some reason or another I tend to be wary a skip watching, reading, or listening to films, books, and music that has become "popular." The reason why I put quotation marks around the word popular is because these works I mention are not the new film by Stephen Spielberg, novel by Janet Evanovich, or album by Jessica Simpson, I would, besides maybe a film made by Spielberg, avoid these at all costs, but an item instead termed "Hip" by individuals who pay way too much for pre-worn clothing and ripped jeans. It is for this reason that I "avoided" watching Braff's film Garden State. I have now watched the film and while I must say that it is not the greatest thing since sliced bread, it is a fun, offbeat little movie that takes an interesting look at love and the malaise of the suburbs.
The film opens with Andrew Largeman, Braff himself, receiving a phone call from his father informing him that his mother has died by drowning in the bathtub. Now to most people this would of course be quite a traumatic experience, however, being that Andrew has been drugged for most of his life, he drifts back off to sleep. However, he does return to New Jersey for his mom's funeral and passively avoids talking to his dad whom he has not seen for over nine years. Instead, Andrew hangs out with his old high school friends and spends his time getting high at his friend Jesse's mansion. However, he is having a bit of trouble with sudden headaches, so his dad, who is a psychiatrist, schedules him an appointment with a neurologist. There Andrew meets a fascinating girl named Sam who likes listening to The Shins. It is also at the neurologist's office that the viewer learns that Andrew has ceased taking his massive amounts of medicine. What will happen when a mind that has been subdued by drugs for sixteen years finally gets release?
Garden State is a quiet film that sits somewhere on the border of normalcy and the surreal. Maybe it is because the viewer has Largeman as a guide, but the film takes of a slow, melancholic quality that bleeds grey throughout its duration. Add to this quite a number of characters who are bit off makes for a film that one is not quite sure where it is going to go. Hated by some and loved by others, I just thinking that Garden State is an easy to watch enjoyable film that for some reason or another hit high on the hipster radar.
Terrific, offbeat meditative film.......2007-07-30
At first Zack Braff's GARDEN STATE seems beautiful but cold - the visuals are arresting, but the young man at the center of everything, played by Braff, is disconnected and passive. Are we really meant to follow this non-character? Soon, though, the point is clear - he IS disconnected, and this is the tale of his re-entry into the world.
GARDEN STATE evolves into a marvelous, emotionally satisfying ride with offbeat characters and a unique sensibility. Perhaps a little too simple and psychotherapudic in spots, the film still holds the heartstrings while never yanking on them abruptly or falsely. Portman is wonderful as the girl who rescues Braff from a life of perpetual sleepwalking, and the two of them onscreen are pure magic.
Great film, interesting commentary.......2007-07-02
In addition to enjoying this film immensely, one of the things I like about DVDs is the addition of commentary. On this DVD, I found it interesting to learn how Director Zach Braff used different brands of film (Kodak or Fuji) in different homes to get a "cooler" or "warmer" feel. Little details like that make the picture even more enjoyable on repeated viewings.
Quirky love story with panache.......2007-06-06
This is a triumph for Zach Braff who directed, wrote, and also stars as Andrew Largeman who finds that love beats the holy heck out of lithium and assorted drugs bizarrely prescribed by his unfeeling father who just happens to be a shrink. Ladies and gentleman never let your father be your shrink.
I was quite taken with Natalie Portman who plays Sam who turns out to be Large's true love, and such a kinky, quirky, beautiful true love she is. Portman eschews beauty in every scene but manages to be cute and sweet and very emotionally evolved, which I liked. She is of course beautiful and brilliant as everybody knows, but here she tries something different. She strives to be ordinary and slight but with great emotive power. Nice performance.
The sound track which reminded this old guy of something from Simon and Garfunkel, and in fact there is a Simon and Garfunkel tune on it, was the sort of sweet, nostalgia-producing, alternative rock kind of sweet angst sound that lets you know that this is what youth is all about.
Largeman, wanna-be and somewhat successful/somewhat failed actor out on loan, comes home from the big city to rural New Jersey because his mother has died, unaccountable in a bathtub--which can happen if you are a paraplegic. He deals with a childhood tragedy and acquired guilt, meets his old buds, including Mark (Peter Sarsgaard) who is a full time slacker and part time dreamer and consummate doper. Largeman unveils his sidecar mobile--the only thing willed from his grandfather's estate--with its white star on combat green, and tools around town, parties a little and meets quirky Samantha who likes to tell lies as a kind of way to deal with the world. I knew a girl like that, only she knew when she was lying--if somebody caught her. Sam figures it's a tick like Tourette's, and anyway her lies are harmless.
The movie is sweet and mildly comedic with some original shtick, and at times a bit of a tear-jerker. More than anything it's a touching love story, which I can never resist. And, yes, it's very New Jersey like Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi, although no songs by them on the track--not to mention Elizabeth Shue who was a classmate of Braff's in high school.
See this for Zach Braff who put a lot of his emotional life into the film and deserves the accolades he's received.

Elvis Presley's seventh film was the first of his "Hawaii trilogy" (including Girls! Girls! Girls! and Paradise, Hawaiian Style). While its story is daft--the King has just been released from his Army posting in Italy and returned to the islands, where he's trying to avoid working in his father's fruit business--the music is not: "Blue Hawaii," "Almost Always True," and the beautiful "Can't Help Falling in Love." Angela Lansbury plays Elvis's mother, who can't seem to get through to him. Directed by the star's frequent collaborator, Norman Taurog (G.I. Blues). --Tom Keogh

Saw this at the neighborhood movie house, hows that for a.......2007-08-16
blast from the past? I was 10 and I thought how handsome Elvis was, and how blue the sky in Hawaii was. The Technicolor is terrific. Just like a Doris Day film. No real plot but you just can't beat Hawaii for sheer beauty. Pure fun, no calories. Enjoy!
Elvis In His Prime In Totally Enjoyable Hawaiian Romance.......2007-07-13
I most certainly am not going to refer to the 1961 Elvis Presley movie "Blue Hawaii", as a "guilty pleasure", it's a pleasure, pure and simple. To see Elvis Presley in his legendary prime in a romantic vehicle totally suited to his talents "Blue Hawaii", is one of the best films of his to try and catch. For a "60's child", like myself this film is a wonderful nostalgic excursion into times long gone by when I first saw this film as a youngster on a double bill with another Presley vehicle "Kid Galahad", at the local Theatre. I guess that's alot of the appeal of "Blue Hawaii", devoid as it is of any deep meanings or seriousness which nevertheless makes it an ideal way to spend some time. Combining some great songs handled with the usual smoothness and expertise by the "King", himself, a terrific supporting cast which includes a priceless performance by muli talented Angela Lansbury as Elvis' mother, and some of the most gorgeous Hawaiian scenery you could imagine, the film is entertaining as both a musical and as a travel log of Hawaii in all its natural beauty. Elvis made another enjoyable opus in Hawaii titled "Paradise, Hawaiian Style" in 1966 however I feel "Blue Hawaii", ties in closer with the Elvis Presley legend making it the one film of his to see if you want a quick snapshot of what made him such a special and much loved performer.
Blue Hawaii.......2007-06-02
Fun movie to watch for an old classic. Great scenery. Kind of chessy but fun.
Wow!!.......2007-05-25
This is one of the most fun movies to watch!!!
The scenery is awsome. As well as the movie itself. It is funny and just a fun one to kick back and forget everything.
Enjoy this one with the entire family.

Wonderful Music.......2007-06-23
I really enjoyed the Platinum Tenors. Their voices blended so well. When they were singing in unison it was difficult to tell that it wasn't just one voice. When I listen to "The Three Tenors" I always feel like it is a competition, Not so with these guys.
The to Brazilian sopranos are magnificent. I especially liked the one who sang "Juliska from Budapest." She has a marvelous upper range and quite a stage presence. BTW, her name is Carla not Clara.
The Dutch Blonde, on the other hand, was a disappointment. She has a nice little voice, suitable for musicals and light opera, but not the caliber of the two Brazilians. She needs to work on her enunciation and pronunciation. There is a difference between "begged" and "bagged" as well as between "memory" and "mammary." She is the main squeeze of Pierre Rieu, Andre's son and and stage manager.
I got a kick out of the violinist playing the banjo, the clarinetist playing the bag pipes and the dancing harpist.
The brunette in the Choir (can 5 women be classified as a choir?) sure knows how to use her eyes.
I thought the choreography left much to be desired. Something you might expect from a high school production
I really enjoyed the bright colors in which the women members were dressed. The fact that everyone was smiling and seemed to be enjoying themselves was also a plus. I'm sure that much of that was arranged, but it came across well. The audience surely enjoyed themselves.
He is a bit of a ham, but it comes across well. BTW, that is a Strad he is waving all over.

Doris Day, the perky, chaste adult star of an odd collection of winking 1960s sex comedies, takes the Irene Dunne role in this remake of the comedy classic My Favorite Wife. As the survivor of a five-year ordeal on a desert island, she returns home the very day her husband has remarried. James Garner, trading his Maverick impish humor and con man cool for a mugging performance of double takes and pratfalls, is her overjoyed husband who is too cowardly to tell his neurotic bride (Polly Bergen). All of this, naturally, leads to a ridiculously complicated plot that combines door-slamming sex farce with mistaken identities (Day poses as a Swedish masseuse) and a goofy sped-up car chase. Chuck Connors, who costars as Day's hunky, he-man island mate "Adam," leads a topnotch supporting cast that includes sassy Thelma Ritter as Garner's no-nonsense mother, Don Knotts as a nervous shoe salesman enlisted by Day to impersonate Adam, Fred Clark at his indignant best, and John Astin and Pat Harrington in early roles. Edgar Buchanan practically steals the film as a gruff, irascible judge who growls through the legal circus that forms the film's chaotic climax. The cast for the most part rises above the tepid script and bland direction and Day sings two songs. Interestingly, this remake was originally developed for Marilyn Monroe and Dean Martin as the never completed Something's Got to Give. --Sean Axmaker
Description
Say "I do" to "madcap comedy" (Box Office) and "exuberant farce" (Film Daily) in this feel-good romp about one groom, two wives and one delightfully daffy honeymoon! Starring Doris Day, James Garner and Polly Bergen, Move Over, Darling is "a funny, funny film!" (Hollywood Citizen News) that's the perfect union of "humor, romance and heart" (The Hollywood Reporter)!
Five years after losing his first wife Ellen (Day) at sea, Nick (Garner) is finally ready to have her declared legally dead, get remarried and settle down to a peaceful second marriage! But wedded bliss becomes marital mayhem when Ellen turns up alive -- with a hilarious, hair-brained scheme to win back her husband, put a stop to the honeymoon and give first love a second chance-at happily-ever-after!
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Movie - Don't Miss this one on DVD!.......2007-09-11
The studios did a wonderful job in restoring this classic movie. It's always been a favorite, but the restoration made it all the better. In my opinion this is one of Doris Day's best comedy movies ever!!! The car wash scene is the best in the movie!
A Doris Day Fan.......2007-09-01
The chemistry between Doris Day and James Garner is just as good as, if not better than, the chemistry Doris had with Hudson. This is another example of fine classic comedy filming at its best. It is funny, entertaining, and romantic. And, once again, it's all done without the insane use of profanity and the extended, over-indulgence of sex.
One of my favorite Doris Day movies........2007-08-11
If you like Doris Day, this is one of the most enjoyable. In my opinion she should have made more movies with Garner. This is a fun movie.
Great Movie.......2007-08-03
I saw this for the first time at the theater, and have loved it ever since. One of my favorite Doris Day Movies.
Love it!.......2007-07-30
This is one of my top 3 favorite "oldies"... along with its original version, "My Favorite Wife", and the unsung "Vivacious Lady" with Ginger Rogers & Jimmy Stewart (which is my #1 pick).
Move Over, Darling is classic Doris Day: it's good, light-hearted fun! I would categorize it with "the thrill of it all" and "send me no flowers".
I don't know what else to say: I just recommend it, especially if you are already a Doris Day fan. You will be pleased! :)

Winner of seven Academy Awards, including best picture, director, actor, and screenplay, William Wyler's brilliant drama about domestic life after World War II remains one of the all-time classics of American cinema. Inspired by a pictorial article about returning soldiers in Life magazine, the story focuses on three war veterans (Fredric March, Dana Andrews, and Harold Russell in unforgettable roles) and their rocky readjustment to civilian life in their Midwestern town of Boone City. Capturing the contradictory moods of America in the mid to late 1940s, this three-hour drama spans a complex range of honest emotions, from joyous celebration and happy reunion to deep-rooted ambivalence and reassessment of personal priorities. A movie milestone when released in 1946, The Best Years of Our Lives still packs a punch with powerful, timeless themes. --Jeff Shannon
Description
It's the hope that sustains the spirit of every GI: the dream of the day when he will finally return home. For three WWII veterans, the day has arrived. But for each man, the dream is about to becomea nightmare. Captain Fred Derry (Dana Andrews) is returning to a loveless marriage; Sergeant Al Stephenson (Fredric March) is a stranger to a family that's grown up without him; and young sailor Homer Parrish (Harold Russell) is tormented by the loss of his hands. Can these three men find the courage to rebuild their world? Or are the best years of their lives a thing of the past? Featuring a brilliant cast that includes Myrna Loy and Virginia Mayo, this postwar classic garnered* seven OscarsÂ(r), including Best Picture. Heart-wrenching, touching and "filled with emotional dynamite" (The Hollywood Reporter), it remains "one of the best films about war veterans ever made" (American Movie Classics). *1946: Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, Writing/Screenplay, Film Editing, Music/Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture
Customer Reviews:
A tremendously moving WWII, which is still moving today..........2007-08-31
This is one of the greatest WWII films ever made, and it's a really moving, deeply human story about war and its aftermath. Despite it being made in 1946, the film still holds it power today. I remember being absolutely stunned by it, enthralled by all of its 3 hours. It also shows that not every American was in love with the idea of fighting in WWII, and that many men were permanently disabled, both physically and mentally, by the war. It also has a rather frank (especially for this country) and honest depiction of adultery (one of the main characters is married to a gold diggin' b****, and another woman desperately wants the man to break up with her so she can enjoy him). It also has one of the greatest wedding scenes in movie history, taking up nearly 30 minutes at the end of the film. It is filmed exactly as it would happen in real life, and Hoagy Carmichael (yes, that Hoagy) is playing the piano during the ceremony. The scene is incredibly moving, and there isn't one ounce of forced sentimentality. It's incredibly honest and deeply moving. All of the performers are wonderful, and William Wyler shows why he was one of Hollywood's greatest directors. A masterpiece from the old Hollywood masters.
These were the Best Years of Our Lives.......2007-06-09
What a great movie. The scenes between Fredick March, Myna Loy and Theresa Wright where Theresa told them that they alway had the perfect life and marriage and Myna looks at Fred and say "how many time have I told you that I hated you and meant it?" Then he looks at her and say "how many times did we have to fall in love all over again?" Its so gooood...Harold Russell great actors and deserves the TWO Oscars. Anyone that hasn't seen it really needs to check this one out..
Thoughtful, touching film.......2007-05-07
I love this movie. Though all the actors were excellent, Harold Russell is the reason to watch this movie. He deserved every ounce of his two - yes two - Oscars that he received for this role. He is amazing to watch. Though disabled, it was hard to consider him handicapped. I once used this film in my sunday school class. The lesson was on overcoming adversity and I showed the scene where Russell plays a piano duet with Hoagy Carmichael. The girls in my class were amazed. Then I shared with them some of the other things Russell had accomplished in his life - like being a founder of AMVETS. Russell's off screen story is a story in itself and should be made into a movie. Unfortunately, no actor could convincingly play him. That's the key to the impact he had on the screen - he wasn't an actor - he was a real, disabled person. Watch this movie - you'll be amazed too.
Classic Black & White War Movie.......2007-05-07
This was my father's all time favorite movie, which may be one reason I love it so much....then again, it's a damn good movie that still holds up! It is the story of three soldiers return to civilian life after World War II, with an outstanding cast and a great 40's style.
Shame on the Film Makers.......2007-04-08
I don't see how self-respecting African-Americans can watch this film without gritting their teeth. Black people are shuffled off to the sidelines with stereotypical, non-speaking parts: They lug baggage at the airport. They work behind the drugstore soda counter. They don't say anything, they don't go anywhere important, they don't even exist in the poor part of town where one of the featured white characters lives.
The movie is racist. It ignores what the Black experience was like for soldiers in WWII and for the folks at home who put up with the enduring racism.
And the flick got a zillion Oscars. Hollywood felt good about itself. Hooray. Figures.

Manic energy and an agreeable level of comic insanity turn Just Friends into the kind of brainless comedy you can enjoy as a modest guilty pleasure. If you liked director Roger Kumble's previous comedy The Sweetest Thing (and let's face it, that movie had some really funny moments), chances are you'll get at least a few solid belly-laughs from this not-so-high-concept premise, in which a formerly fat high-schooler named Chris (Ryan Reynolds) is transformed, ten years later, into a womanizing music executive with a high-profile client (Anna Faris) in the Britney Spears/Christina Aguilera mold. As it zips along with some broad-stroked slapstick and snappy one-liners, the screenplay by Adam Tex Davis contrives to reunite Chris with Jamie (Amy Smart), the former cheerleader who was the great, unrequited love of Chris' miserable high-school life. By his narcissistic logic, he'll seduce her by treating her badly (i.e. she'll want what she thinks she can't have), but he gets unexpected competition in the form of a "Mr. Sensitive" type (Chris Klein, from American Pie), and it's pretty much Hollywood formula from there on, as Just Friends loses momentum without losing its basic appeal. And while Reynolds invests his character with an unexpected degree of emotional nuance, Faris (Scary Movie 3) pulls out all the stops, going deliriously over-the-top to maintain her reputation as a rising comedy starlet with a (hopefully) promising future. We're not talking rocket science here, folks... just sit back, take off your thinking cap, and have some fun. --Jeff Shannon

Funny all the way through!.......2007-06-30
This is a great movie. The casting is right on. Anna Farris is perfect as the spoiled, shallow pop diva. Ryan Reynolds is always funny. Chris Klein was an unexpected pleasant surprise. Julie Hagerty is always a treat.
We have shown this to a variety of our friends and all of them have loved it.
Highly recommend.
Very underrated movie.......2007-06-28
Its amazing how a movie this good could come out with so little buzz. From start to finish you'll be laughing. Very highly recommended.
Great Comedy Movie!!!.......2007-06-18
Great comedy!
This movie had me laughing almost the entire time. Anna Faris gives an amazing performance in this movie as a ditzy pop wanna-be singer. The rest of the cast is amazing in this movie as well. The story is very good and many could relate to it, specially if you've had a crush on someone in high school and you always felt like you were never good enough, unless you were rich, famous, and thin. This is defiantly a good comedy and revolves around the holidays but it's not just another holiday comedy either.
I have this movie as my top favorite films of all times. Just watch it and you'll see what I mean. great movie at a great value!
The shipping was fast, and the DVD was in great condition. This DVD has a great variety of DVD extras. You'll also get to see a lot of behind the scenes and a writer's journey on how to become an actor for a small role in the movie. It's a great DVD with lots to offer and it will keep you entertained through out the whole movie and special features as well.
I highly recommend it!!!
JUST FRIENDS IS JUST HILARIOUS!.......2007-06-13
This is the second movie I've watched with Ryan Reynolds in it in a short while. This movie is every bit as good as "Waiting" if not better. A quirky romantic comedy that is funny and has some heart. The DVD transfer is excellent and there are some very funny and interesting extras.
Love Ryan Reynolds.......2007-06-08
Just a good fun movie. I love his sense of humor. I could and did watch it over and over again.

A true television classic, The Homecoming was the second movie (after 1963's Spencer's Mountain) based on Earl Hamner's autobiographical writings about love, pride, faith, and survival in rural America during the Great Depression. The Homecoming introduced the Walton family, a 1930s mountain clan living a hardscrabble existence that forces patriarch John Walton (Andrew Duggan) to seek work, far from home, in the city. When John fails to return home, as promised, on Christmas Eve, his iron-willed wife Olivia (Patricia Neal) keeps a lid on their children's worry. Oldest son John-Boy (Richard Thomas), who privately dreams of becoming a writer but worries about disappointing his parents, is dispatched to find his dad. Graceful yet harder-edged than the subsequent TV series The Waltons (which recast several characters and ran for nine years), The Homecoming reveals, albeit understatedly, much about the pain of poverty even as the family draws strength and closeness through endurance. --Tom Keogh

The Homecoming.......2007-09-15
I've loved 'The Waltons' for years and enjoyed, again, watching 'The Homecoming', the movie which preceded the popular and long running tv series. Even though the actors portraying the parents in the movie are different from the tv show with which most of us are aquainted, the tone and theme of the movie and show are the same, that of a large, loving family living through hard times. The movie is, perhaps, a little more realistic. I think all of us who have experienced large families can readily identify and perhaps those who have not will wish they could. Charming.
The Homecoming.......2007-08-17
Great pilot of the series. I am so glad however that new actors were brought in for the series (namely the parents).
It was delightful to see the children from such a young age and it has been delightful watching them grow throughout the TV series.
Get this DVD if you love The Waltons, you will not regret it!!!
From tots to adults.......2007-08-11
This movie was a tremendous precursor to The Waltons. It is fun to watch after having seen the series...to see the many changes that occurred between the original movie and the series. It's especially fun to see the Walton kids grow up! Michael Learned started out as being a so-so replacement for Patricia Neal, who played the rough-edged but tough-loving mother in the movie. Patricia Neal was perfect for the part right from the start. It would take Michael Learned awhile to make it her own, which she achieved before very many episodes had passed, so my hat's off to her for doing a stupendous job in the series. Edgar Bergen was a sweet little ol' man who didn't make a very strong imprint on the movie. His replacement for the series--Will Geer--started out small but grew in the part as Grandpa in leaps and bounds. He and John Boy (Richard Thomas) would work extremely well as a team--each with a sparkle of life in his eye. Grandma was Grandma (Ellen Corby) in both the movie and series, God bless her! The father in the movie had a tiny but poignant and sensitive role. The series father (Ralph Waite) expanded on the sensitive aspect while adding a powerful dynamic to the series. And the kids acted like kids all the way through, jumping directly from the movie to the TV screen without batting an eye. Thank God for The Waltons, regardless of its packaging!
Family Greats.......2007-07-30
I remember watching this movie on TV way back in the early 70's and it always stuck in my memory. Re watching it I can see why they sure don't make this family heart wrenching stories like this today. Great for the whole family to watch.
The Homecoming.......2007-07-05
Based on the autobiographical novel by Earl Hamner, Jr., Fielder Cook's heartwarming, award-winning TV drama "The Homecoming" spawned the long-running series "The Waltons." Patricia Neal is superb as Olivia Walton, who soothes her children's anxieties while dispatching John-Boy, winningly played by wholesome actor Richard Thomas, to find their father. Cook's spare, touching film is ideal for the holidays, underlining the importance of family love and solidarity over material possessions.

Big Jake is not one of the Duke's classics, but a diverting attempt nonetheless. Everyone seems to think that Jacob McCandles is six-feet under ("I thought you was dead" is a running line throughout), so some bad men kidnap his grandson. They want a piece of the family fortune and will kill to get it. Patrick Wayne, the Duke's own son, plays one of Big Jake's kids, and together they start out after the boy's abductors. Richard Boone makes a worthy adversary to Jake's larger than life figure, and the final confrontation between the two contains some great gritted-teeth dialogue. Maureen O'Hara is barely in the feature, sharing the same fate as Bobby Vinton as the boy's father. He seems to be onscreen just to get shot. --Keith Simanton

A Favorite.......2007-09-10
I was raised on John Wayne movies at a time when he was a hero for all of America. He made this movie at the peak of his career and its a good one. Bruce Cabot, who often played his adversary, was his trusted friend in this one. He's come home to rescue his grandson from the bad guys at a time when model t's are competing with horses for transportation. And this movie is filled with scenes where Wayne could say more with a look or a short phrase than others could say with an ocean of dialogue. While its not his best film its still one of his best from this period in his career. You will see a number of familiar faces in this film too. He liked to use the same supporting actors and this film is no exception. Richard Boone gives a fine performance too! Get the popcorn ready. Prop your feet up and enjoy a wonderful western!
Big Jake, a great western.......2007-09-10
What can be said? It is John Wayne,Pilgram. I have loved this movie since I was a kid.
NOT THE DUKE'S BEST, BUT TOUGH TO DISLIKE!.......2007-08-03
This is the only John Wayne movie I was lucky enough to see in the theater. I sat through this film 3 times that day! It is a fun picture and John Wayne was one of those stars who could make any picture work. Seeing it again now, it brought back a lot of good memories, even if it wasn't as good as I remembered. The DVD transfer looks good on my widescreen collection version, but I see there is a newer release. I don't know if they restored or remastered the print on the newer version. Anyone know if they did?
BIG JAKE--Call Him Anything But Daddy.......2007-06-01
Often it's hard to separate the man from his arch-conservative politics, but the fact is that John Wayne defined what it meant to be a star in Hollywood for decades on end. And while his way of making films may have fallen into a routine under his Batjac production company during the last decade and a half of his life without the guiding hands of a John Ford, a Howard Hawks, or a Henry Hathaway, he still managed to pull it off time and time again. Such is the case with BIG JAKE, released in 1971.
Here, his character is Jacob McCandles, the patriarch of a south Texas ranching family who is presumed to be dead because nobody has seen him in eighteen years. But he is forced by his estranged wife (Maureen O'Hara, in her final film with Wayne before his death and her 20 year-long retirement) to find and kill the outlaw gang who killed several of her ranch hands, badly wounded one of his sons (Bobby Vinton), and made off with his grandson (Ethan Wayne). Along the way to find his grandson, which takes him across the Rio Grande into Mexico, he is given the seemingly even more onerous task of forcing his kids (Chris Mitchum, Glenn Corbett, Patrick Wayne) NOT to call him Daddy.
Besides everything else, Wayne and his trusty Indian sidekick (Bruce Cabot) are carrying a storebox with what is supposedly a $1 million ransom as authorized by the leader of the outlaws (Richard Boone, a very efficient villainous performance). Of course, Wayne doesn't exactly plan on coming through with that ransom, and you can pretty much guess what happens next...
BIG JAKE is every bit as predictable as Wayne's other westerns in terms of plot, with the exceptions of THE COWBOYS and THE SHOOTIST (neither of which were made under the Batjac banner), but it works all the same, largely due to Wayne's always-formidable presence, but also in no small measure to Boone's villainous outlaw. It also benefits from the excellent cinematography of William Clothier, who shot many Westerns, both with and without Wayne in them, done on location in what had become Wayne's favorite western locale--the high Mexican desert around Durango. George Sherman, who had directed Wayne in several westerns in the early 1930s prior to the Duke attaining stardom in STAGECOACH, managed to direct with enough panache to cover the fact that he wasn't in the best of health at the time (a fact that Wayne covered up by directing a number of scenes himself but still giving the directing credit to Sherman). The only serious disappointment in BIG JAKE is the fact that Wayne and O'Hara don't have enough screen time together (given the chemistry they showed in Ford's 1952 classic THE QUIET MAN).
And yet despite its flaws, there's no denying that BIG JAKE just plain works, not only for die-hard fans of the Duke, but for people who just appreciate any westerns (although this one is unique among Wayne's westerns by being the most overtly violent, hence the 'PG-13' rating). It may not be STAGECOACH or THE SEARCHERS, but then what is?
Just don't call him "Daddy", or he'll finish the fight.

Wonderful.......2007-09-12
This is still my favorite movie, years later. It explains to me the importance of where you came from.
The Trip to Bountiful.......2007-08-06
This movie takes me back to years of my childhood, when my grandmother used to talk about her old homestead. It was a beautifully written story and Geraldine Page gave an outstanding performance.
A MUST for anyone's collection.......2007-06-06
This is such a classical, sweet, stirring movie with incredible acting.
I can't think of a movie fan that wouldn't enjoy it, and it is appropriate for families - the older members (grandmothers) and the younger. As unforgettable as the movie is, the music is also exquisite - it's uncomplicated but so perfect. I own the CD and always have it in the car, ready.
A great movie!.......2007-05-08
You don't see this type of movie often. Great acting my Geraldine Page! Horton Foote's writing is equally as impressive. I highly recommend this movie.
A MOVIE I CAN RELATE TOO........2007-03-14
I LOVED THIS MOVIE. IT IS THE KIND OF MOVIE I WANT TO WATCH OVER AND OVER AND OVER. IT BRINGS BACK A LOT OF MEMORIES OF TIME PAST AND BEING THE AGE OF THE CARRIE I UNDERSTAND HER.

U2 does it again.......2007-04-11
This is such a great DVD, I purchased for my friends for their anniversary, being devoted U2 fans themselves. I have also persuaded many of my other friends to purchase.
Following the band since I was 15, they have never let me down! When my friend and I were in college, we spent many a friday evening watching our very well-worn VHS tape of Rattle and Hum. IMO this is the best live DVD performance of U2. I promise, U2 fans out there, you will not be disappointed!
Slane Castle rocks with U2.......2007-03-31
Loved the energy of this concert especially near an Irish castle!
I love live concerts.......2007-03-21
A friend reccomened this DVD. I had to get it since I love U2. The feeling from the band and the audience is unforgettable. You can actually see mist coming down and the castle in the background. Larry Mullen's expressions and body language conveys how he feels. They are "home" in this video and like no other rock band in the world U2's message is seen and heard vividly. The entire band seems so happy and in perfect harmony.
And to think this was only about a week before 9/11. That makes it only more precious.
Great understanding of the band, has a true feeling of the moment!.......2007-02-25
I read the book U2 by U2 and I've seen the other vids, but reading the book and seeing this vid gave me such great insight into this concert. IThis concert has so much meaning, more than the others, cuz Bono's Dad passed shortly before and he and the band played with an emotion and looseness that you cannot find on other vids. Watch and see the playfullness. Adam had a great night and Edge went off! Bono's vocals were top notch also.
GREAT CONCERT! Sound quality is superb and the video quality and production is very nice. It gives a good feel of being very close to the performers.
This is a must have DVD.
