This sumptuous and moving 1994 film written and directed by Bernard Rose (Candyman) investigates the artistic and romantic passions of one of the greatest composers of all time. Featuring a superb performance by Gary Oldman (Sid and Nancy) as Ludwig van Beethoven, Immortal Beloved is full of uncommonly vivid, rich imagery as it charts the tumultuous life of the deaf child prodigy and his rise to the height of musical achievement. Along the way, he attempts to play mentor to his nephew, attend to his many passionate romances--the most stable one was with a countess (Isabella Rossellini)--and fight bouts of depression and madness that ruled his life and his art. The film is framed around a "Rosebud"-type letter found after the composer's death that makes up the crux of the story. Jeroen Krabbé (The Fugitive), playing Beethoven's lifelong friend, attempts to discover who Beethoven's muse really was, becoming as driven as his friend in discovering the unlikely identity of the composer's "immortal beloved." Through this we gain an insight into the nature of obsession, romance, and the heights and sacrifices of artistic achievement. The film exhibits some extraordinary sound design, and the finale features a magical encapsulation of Beethoven's life and loves set to his "Ode to Joy." As an exciting and passionate journey, Immortal Beloved is its own masterpiece. --Robert Lane

2 out of 5 stars Sadly disappointed .......2007-09-05

I approached viewing this movie with great anticipation. I've been a devout Beethoven Junkie since I was 14, but nothing of Beethoven's character as portrayed by Oldman rings true to the biographies and many articles I've read about him over the years. (No fault of Oldman's; he didn't write the script.)

Early on, we see Beethoven frolicking about in the lusty pursuit of a young girl, when in fact he was somewhat of a prude. He viewed Mozart's Don Giovanni and Marriage of Figaro as immoral, and wrote only one opera himself, Fidelio, because it was the only libretto he thought lived up to his ethical standards.

I've long thought that, given a good script, the best actor to play Beethoven would be Harvey Keitel. Just look at that scene on the beach in "The Piano" as he listens to Holly Hunter play: His hands clasped behind his back as he paces, head bent forward. He's the spitting image of Beethoven in a famous illustration made in his lifetime.

I do recommend a wonderful film on DVD from the BBC, "Eroica," about the premiere rehearsal of that symphony. There's a little thwarted romance subplot, but it's mostly about the drama of the music, conducted by John Eliot Gardiner on period instruments. Ian Hart plays Beethoven. (Trivia: he was Professor Quirinus Quirrell in the first Harry Potter movie.)

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie! Should Have Left One Scene Out........2007-08-28

I love this movie! Beethoven rules and Gary Oldman is Great! Only one scene was not necessary to the movie and brings its artistic brillance down a notch. The scene I speak of is when the French Army is shown invading Austria and a few French soldiers pull a woman from a coach in the woods and rape her. Did this kind of thing happpen, of course, but what in the heck it has to do with Beethoven, his music and the mystery of his "Immortal Beloved" I have never been able to figure out. I wish it had been cut from the DVD and filled in with some footage that actual contributes to the film. A BAD Director's choice. (Mind you, I am not a critic of violence in a movie, I LOVE war movies of all sorts, but this was just meaningless to the story).

5 out of 5 stars A true mystery.......2007-08-25

I am not amazed that this movie, after 13 years, continues to be one that continues to get such great notice. The life of Beethoven is one that will always get much attention from anyone involved in music, and this movie brilliantly depicts one of the greater mysteries of the Master's life. Will we ever truly know who the "Immortal Beloved" really was? There are several theories, and candidates, as to who this woman really was, and some claim Karl is the son of Beethoven by his sister-in-law; however, has it ever been proven?

This movie creates in the viewer a frustration every time the Immortal Beloved is briefly glimpsed, shrouded in her veils, coming and going. Frustration develops and grows with every near miss Beethoven has in meeting his lover, a frustration the viewer keenly feels. This is done so well the viewer develops an understanding of the angst Beethoven himself felt in loving a woman he could not have.

This is a movie I highly recommend for any Beethoven fan.

5 out of 5 stars Oldman is superb!.......2007-08-24

Gary Oldman does a superb job as Ludwig van Beethovan. The story of guessing who Beethovan's "Immortal Beloved" is a fascinating one and this film captures it. I was highly impressed by this film, and it has quickly become one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Immortal Movie.......2007-08-09

This is a very moving story of the life of one of the world's greatest composers. Every Beethoven fan owes it to himself to watch this one.

This moving 1995 adaptation of Alan Paton's celebrated novel stars James Earl Jones as a beloved, rural minister in South Africa who makes his first trip to Johannesburg in search of his son. The latter's destiny has been linked with that of a doomed, young white man, whose racist father (Richard Harris) is approached by Jones's character in the spirit of mutual understanding. Directed by Darrell James Roodt (Sarafina!), the film is most powerful in those scenes featuring Harris and Jones together, though early sequences grounded in the hard life and times of Jones's community are colorful and dramatic. It's impossible not to be touched by the cautious but real connection made between the principal characters and by the moral authenticity of the actors. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars South African tragedy,Justice and Enlightenment.......2007-08-20

Excellent movie. A black preacher(Jones) and a white wealthy landowner(Harris) played their roles astoundingly.
Living in an environment of apartheid or pending apartheid, both have experienced their own personal tragedies. Being complete strangers to each other, they eventually met face to face in a friendly atmosphere.Then as he was about to leave, the preacher turnd around and told the landowner, "My greatest sorrow is your greatest sorrow."
A definitely "must see" movie for everyone, young or old. Most certainly 5 stars for this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Visual Aid for Discussing book.......2006-11-10

The film follows the book extremely well. Minor changes do not affect the author's purpose. Emotional performances by recognizable actors such as Jones and Harris are appealing to current audiences. The film makes thoughtful discussion easier than simply reading and discussing Paton's novel.

5 out of 5 stars James Earl Jones Shines in Noble Performance.......2006-02-09

Darrell Roodt chose carefully when it was time to direct the first film of South Africa after the abolition of Apartheid. Alan Paton's novel was first filmed in 1951, and "Cry the Beloved Country" is a tale that seems as much a part of the South African collective zeitgeist as Twain or Hemingway or Steinbeck is part of America's.

This film version is centered around perhaps James Earl Jones' most powerful screen performance. He stars as the Reverend Stephen Kumalo, a clergyman from a small town in South Africa. He is a strong man of faith and leads a congregation in matters both religious and practical. His son ran away to Johannesburg to work in the mines, and his sister went away also to join her husband. His brother, John, is also in the city, an outspoken black activist who has abandoned the ways of religion because religion is not creating justice for blacks. The film opens with Reverend Kumalo receiving word that things are not all well in Johannesburg.

Richard Harris has the role of James Jarvis, a wealthy white landowner from the same small town. His son has also gone to Johannesburg, where he works as an activist trying to improve the repressed condition of the South African Blacks who are only starting to come under the evil thumb of Apartheid.

The whites and blacks are so separate that although they are two of the most prominent figures in a small town, Mr. Jarvis and the Reverend Kumalo have not even met as the movie opens. Tragedy strikes, more than once, and without spoiling the plot I'll just reveal that it involves the two sons of these two characters.

Roodt goes out of his way to display the noble suffering of Reverend Kumalo. He never speaks a discouraging word, even when confronting terrible injustice. The story hinges on Kumalo's innate goodness, and Mr. Jones brings this to life in a way that carries the story along.

It is worth mentioning a single scene - the one in which Kumalo and Jarvis first meet. The previously mentioned tragedy has already occurred and both men are in a kind of mourning. Kumalo knows Jarvis while Jarvis vaguely recognizes Kumalo. The Reverend confides in the powerful white man that "My greatest sorrow is also your greatest sorrow". The performances by these two great actors in this powerful scene would be reason alone to watch this film, but I would still recommend the movie with that centerpiece scene removed.

It is clichéd to say that the world would be a better place if we were collectively more understanding and tolerant of those who were different from us, but "Cry the Beloved Country" brings this sentiment forward in a way that is realistic and powerful.

5 out of 5 stars Cry The Beloved Country.......2005-07-27

Very excellent movie, James Earl Jones did a wonderful
job. I read the book and the movie stayed true to it.

5 out of 5 stars A simple film about two fathers that leaves you amazed........2005-06-29

Talk about a relief from our sardonic, nihilistic world. I felt like I popped in a handful of Poignant Pills after I saw this film.

I could use words like captivating, rapturous or brilliant to describe the screenplay, the acting, the mood of this film; but I'm not going to. To do so would be wrong, for this film does something that most films can not - it speaks for itself.

In it, we have two fathers. One, a minister (Earl Jones) during apartheid in South Africa. Another (Harris) is a rich man who never understood his son. When the pastor's son fearfully and regretfully kills the rich man's son, we witness the human condition at its frailest core. The pastor's shame all but consumes him while the rich man is more pained by the fact that he never was able to know his son who so painstakingly worked to restore racial harmony long before it was popular. Instead of adding to the pastor's guilt, grief and pain at what his son has done, he restores him by graciously forgiving the man and his child. It is as if each man knows his place and is unwilling to move above it. Jones' character cannot forgive himself for what his son has done and Harris' character cannot forgive himself for refusing to reach a bit further into his boy's life. They find healing in one another, and this adds to the tone of the film.

This film is altogether amazing, both story-wise and visually. Both men tread upon great pains in this film, pains that cut them to the heart, but both persevere.

One of the top twenty-five films I've ever watched and one of the most under appreciated movies of all time.

This layered film, a labor of love from director Jonathan Demme and star Oprah Winfrey, covers a lot of turf in its nearly three-hour running time. Part slavery fable, part mother-daughter tale, part ghost story, Beloved demands an audience's full attention from its dramatic, slightly bewildering opening, when a family dog comes down on the wrong side of some angry, unseen force. But Demme and his talented cast provide an unforgettable payoff for those who surrender.

The film traces the life of Sethe (played in her middle years by Winfrey), a former slave who has rebuilt what seems to be a peaceful, productive life in Ohio. Yet through chilling, sparing use of flashback, Demme slowly unveils, as does the Toni Morrison masterpiece on which the film is based, the horrors of Sethe's former life, and the terrible event that led to the haunting of Sethe's home.

While the horrors of slavery and the bloody event in Sethe's family leave undeniable impressions, the film's brilliance is also evidenced in smaller, equally satisfying ways. Rachel Portman's spiritual-influenced score is as uplifting as it is haunting, and the glimpses of the post-slavery African American world--as with a simple family outing to a local carnival, or a ladies' sewing-and-gospel circle--make this a treat for the intellect as well as the heart. The members of the cast, especially Kimberly Elise as Sethe's struggling daughter and Thandie Newton as the mysterious title character, are supremely affecting. --Anne Hurley

Description

Oprah Winfrey (THE COLOR PURPLE) and Danny Glover (LETHAL WEAPON IV, THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS) play the unforgettable lead roles in a powerful, widely acclaimed cinematic triumph from Jonathan Demme -- the Academy Award(R)-winning director of THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. Then, an old friend from out of her past (Glover) unexpectedly reenters her life. With his help, Sethe may finally be able to rediscover who she is and regain her lost sense of hope. Also featuring outstanding performances from Thandie Newton (GRIDLOCK'D) and Lisa Gay Hamilton (TV's THE PRACTICE) -- you'll agree with critics everywhere who've hailed this landmark adaptation of Toni Morrison's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel as one of the year's finest films!

3 out of 5 stars This COULD have been a truly great film!.......2007-06-12

The purpose of screenwriters who adapt a novel is to make the viewer NOT have to read the novel in order to understand the film! That said, I have watched BELOVED several times since it's theatrical release in 1998. At that time I thought that I would NEVER revisit this nearly three hour debacle. There is SO much to admire about this film; the acting is first-rate;the Rachel Portman soundtrack is positively one of if not her best;the cinematography of Fuj Sakimoto is outstanding.........but something still is lost somewhere in the translation of Toni Morrison's novel either in the screenplay or the editing that makes this an extremely difficult movie to follow. There are SO many stories going on in this film that it is hard to know just where to "hang your hat." It is a story of slavery, of women's strength, of supernatural/spirituality, of a daughter's needs/jealousy,there are ghosts, there is a certain weirdness that,...well......YIKES!!!....how much more needs to be crammed in to make this film make sense...or more senseless??? Believe me, I admire much about the scope of this film, but it has serious problems that should have been fixed. Perhaps the "labor of love" that Oprah and Demme felt for the book only clouded their judgment in the final product.The film is sprawling and loses all center focus. A film and a screenplay need to stand on their own WITHOUT forcing a viewer to read the book OR read other reviews in order to totally understand what they just saw!!! This is where BELOVED fails miserably.What you walk away with is ONLY what you can piece together (or think you can piece together!). I still watch this film for all of it's beauty and yet still come away with a certain emptiness that mourns the loss of what could have been a truly great film! I genuinely wish that I could have given it 5 stars!

4 out of 5 stars get ready to rewind!.......2007-05-30

This was a good movie, but I found it hard to follow at points. I had to rewind a few times to be able to follow the story plot.

4 out of 5 stars requires full attention.......2007-03-16

I had it on my mind for many years to watch Beloved. It came on televison a few weeks back, but I purposefully avoided watching it on network TV, since I'm sure some parts would be edited out.

I'm quite confused by so many negative reviews here. So many people use The Color Purple as a reference point, which is entirely plausable. In fact, I myself draw parallels between Beloved and The Color Purple, even to Their Eyes Were Watching God. The overall impression I get from the mixed/negative reviews is that, while The Color Purple is heartwarming, Beloved is weird and cold. It seems that people forget that The Color Purple deals also with disturbing themes, like incest. It's just that they come to the forefront of Beloved a whole lot more. Honestly, what do people want, a reprise of The Color Purple?

If you read between the lines, many reviewers here have been dumbed down by a stream of Hollywood films. When Thandie Newton stands stark naked and pregnant on the porch in broad daylight, it is NOT a sexy scene. Shame on those who equate nudity with titillating sex scenes and nothing else. I could go on and on... peruse the reviews for yourself.

Overall, I was quite satisfied with the film. Yes, I had questions that weren't answered, such as why Paul D refers to Beloved as "red heart" during a pivotal scene. Still, most of the questions you have will be answered if you pay close attention, and rewind a couple of scenes.

If there is one thing I would have liked more, it would have been more of the backstory of the town of Sweet Home. You only get a small glimpse and understanding through flashback. While this makes for good cinema, it does leave your curiosity unsatisfied. I'm sure many, like myself, will want to read the book to fill in the blanks.

5 out of 5 stars What Cost For Freedom.......2007-03-10

The book came to life in this movie. This is one of the most heart wrenching films I have ever seen. I knew what to expect from the book but to see it happen was a totally different thing. How does an escaped slave learn to live free? As young Sethe (Lisa Gay Hamilton) is able to make her way to freedom in Ohio she is faced with a horrid choice when one day her ex-master shows up to claim her and her children as his property. Flashbacks of the past are throughout this film while Sethe (Oprah) is telling her story to Paul D. (Danny Glover). At the same time these things are happening Sethe and her daughter Denver (Kimberly Elise) are being constantly teased and tormented by a ghost. Then a mysterious young lady arrives and is known as Beloved. This homeless girl takes up residence with Sethe and her family and strange things continue to happen. You really need to read the book to fully understand the premise of the movie. Beloved is one of those hard to watch films because of the graphic violence put upon slaves and also a very disturbing scene involving children. So be warned...

3 out of 5 stars Hmmm..........2007-01-21

Shockingly bad. Over-animated, jumpy, too much colloquial speech, cartoonish artwork. In short, the total opposite of everything that makes most of the Scholastic Storybook DVDs so incredibly wonderful.

I have purchased 30 of the Scholastic Storybook DVDs from Amazon (the 27 DVD bundle is a steal), and we borrow the rest from Netflix. We watch them with our 3 year old, and we own many of the books covered by the DVDs. I suppose I am spoiled, because the vast majority of the Scholastic Storybook DVDs are WONDERFUL. They are beautiful, educational, and entertaining.

If you like children's TV, you might like this DVD. But if you seek out Scholastic Storybook DVDs for their literary quality, their beautiful artwork, their fantastic narration, etc., then just skip this DVD. It's drivel.

      5 out of 5 stars I recently found I didn't have these!.......2007-07-19

      I purchased something, not from amazon. It had episodes 1-144 and the 4 movies in a bundle. I though "WOO! I can get them and just buy the rest later!" So I spend 130 (Thats right, 130!! ^_^ ) On it and it was shipped to me. Every night I watched 3 or 4 episodes, to savor them, and then when I came to these three, you will nevr guess what happened,

      THEY WHERE NOT THERE!!! MISSING!! NOT ON THE FLIPPEN DVD!!! This left me handing! These three episodes are the BEST and most CLIMAXED of ALL the episodes! AND I DIDN'T HAVE THEM!! I mas mad.

      When I looked on Amazon to see if they had these 3 episodes, at first i did not see them. I nearly had a heart attack thinking they where not here and where not anywhere on DVD. But then I found them, and was happy.

      Thank god they come in threes, the exact amount of episodes I was missing! Ironic?

      ~~~~ anyhoo ~~~~
      These episodes are the best ones, they have the most Drama truth telling and most action out of all the the other Inuyasha episodes, personally. They are the MUST have to any Inyasha watcher, weather they worship or just highly enjoy.
      This volume, and 49 and above, are going to be bought by me. ^_^ Because I will need them or I will die....just kidding! But I will be sad. :(
      Buy this volume of Episodes, its the best!!
      5 out of 5 stars End to a great story arc.......2006-11-14
      Much anticipated end to a great story arc. I was one of probably the few people who was upset when Kikyo was killed, but I thought it was a bold and needed addition to the story. The Band of Seven had some great and memorable characters who also showed some depth. This entire arc showed some true progression of character developement and story. It was a truly satisfying disc.
An enormous production with lavish sets and costumes, this swashbuckling story features a vibrant performance by the great John Barrymore.       4 out of 5 stars francois in paris, chestnuts in blossom ..........2007-04-26
      john barrymore stars as francois villon in this late silent epic and delivers one of his best screen performances. he is matched by conrad veidt in a splendidly hammy (i mean that in the best sense) turn as louis xi, jointly foisting off the takeover of paris by the evil burgundians in late medieval france. villon of course is remembered as one of frances great literary figures and the legends about his picaresque life have been grist for writers for centuries. this is a funny swashbuckler, and richly deserving its fine reputation, tho i wish i wish i wish (in vain, it seems) that the ronald colman "if i were king" (with an early screenplay from preston sturges!) of a decade later would find ITS way to dvd (i wont even dare hope for the dennis king / jeanette macdonald "vagabond king"). major fun.
      4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable late Medieval costume drama.......2007-01-25
      This film begins in 1432, when François de Montcorbier is burnt at the stake for his role in trying to drive the English out of his beloved France. While gathering up some of his ashes to put in a locket the next day, his grief-stricken widow prays that her child will grow up to have the same type of heart and soul that his father did, only that he'll get to live instead of die for France. Twenty-five years later, that child, François Villon (a real historical person who lived from 1431-63), is a renowned national poet and very popular with the common people in Paris and the nearby city of Vauxcelles. He's also hopelessly in love with wine and women. Villon is so popular indeed that he's made King of the Revels on All Fools' Day, but the wild fun festivities come to a premature and devastating halt when Villon insults Charles, Duke of of Burgundy, a dangerous rival to King Louis XI. Since this incident happened in Vauxcelles and not Paris itself, however, King Louis XI only has Villon banished from ever setting foot in Paris again, on the threat of immediate death. Villon eventually goes back to Paris to help the people and to try to prevent the evil Charles from taking over as king. He winds up back in Paris accidentally, by means of a catapault that he and his friends were using to send food and brandy to the poor. It is upon this return to Paris that he meets Charlotte de Vauxcelles, whom he is catapaulted into the bedroom of and immediately falls in love (or at least lust) with. For trying to break up Charlotte's impending marriage to Count Thibault, a man she doesn't love, Villon is once more sentenced to death, but he manages to save his hide by prophesising to the king that Louis's death will occur 24 hours after his own. This friendly relationship with the king isn't long-lived, however, although no matter what happens to him, Villon remains determined to expose Charles for the scheming traitorous scumbag he really is in order to both save France and win Charlotte's hand in marriage.
      Although this is a very enjoyable film, with touches of several genres (comedy, melodrama, swashbuckling, drama), it is, however, a costume drama, a genre that isn't always the best introduction for someone just getting into silent film. The silent costume drama can be a bit of an acquired taste even for more seasoned fans, what with a lot of different characters to keep track of, usually a longer length than most silents, a lot more intertitles than usual, and a plot that can take awhile to fully set up (as well as how some people just aren't interested in historical pictures anyway). This film does start out a bit slowly for those very reasons, but before long it gets more and more interesting, compelling, and exciting, and has a plot that's a lot easier to follow, with less meandering twists and turns, than is sometimes found in silent costume dramas. (Although I agree that the ending is a bit lacklustre and in media res, particularly in comparison to the great scene that just came before.) John Barrymore is simply fantastic in the leading role, and exhibits a lot of range throughout the course of the film, getting to swashbuckle, be romantic, and be comedic instead of just playing the part in a dramatic serious manner straight through. He's also looking quite handsome in this film, and even appears in just a loincloth in some of the scenes. Conrad Veidt is also wonderful as King Louis XI, a role which also allows him to express a range of different emotions, and the great character comedian Mack Swain is great as Villon's pal Nicholas. It's nice to see him in a more serious film instead of just comedies. Overall, in spite of the potential drawbacks of the costume drama genre, this is a great film for seeing why John Barrymore is considered one of the finest male actors of the 20th century.
      4 out of 5 stars The Beloved Rogue.......2005-10-23
      Hollywood used to have a thing about turning the clock back four or five hundred years, locating things in a European capital, and dressing the Big Star in tights while having him clatter over the rooftops or through the trees. Come to think of it, movies are still partial to tights and rooftop cavortings, although today's heroes are apt to wear a more elaborate costume, move faster than a speeding bullet, and are almost always forced to suffer through at least one `origins' story.
      The extra-normal powers enjoyed by François Villon, the fifteenth century `first great poet of France,' seems to have been a limitless capacity for wine and an uncanny talent for spontaneous creation of metered verse. At least so says the 1927 silent THE BELOVED ROGUE, a biography of sorts starring the ever-entertaining John Barrymore. I haven't been able to squeeze many facts about the historic Villon out of the internet. What it does have to say is a little more piquant than what you'll get from the movie. Apparently, Villon was a thief, robber, and may have killed a priest or two during his career. Banished a number of times for his crimes, Villon was sentenced to death by hanging at least once. More immediately, an operetta based on Villon, The Vagabond King, premiered in 1925. The Vagabond King would be turned into a movie twice, in 1930 and 1956. In 1938 the Justin Huntly McCarthy play would be adapted to If I Were King, starring Ronald Coleman. Popular guy, that Villon. THE BELOVED ROGUE may be the only movie about Villon not based on the operetta.
      Not having seen any of the other films I can't attest to comparisons, but on it's own this movie is a lot of fun. Villon, as legend has it, was born on the day of Joan of Arc's martyrdom, and our first glimpse of the toddler is an amusing scene that shows him refusing the bottle unless wine is mixed in with the milk. Villon grows into the King of Fools, a low caste lover of life who chums around with silent film comics Slim Summerville and Mack Swain. This seems to be something of a light romantic comedy, but it's hard to tell with silent movies. In any event, the humor induces smiles rather than guffaws. To add some class conflict grit into the proceedings the movie has Villon fall in love with the beautiful princess Charlotte de Vauxcelles, played by the transcendently beautiful Marceline Day. The bent and seedy King Louis XI (played with decrepit aplomb by German actor Conrad Veidt) banishes Villon from his beloved Paris not, as the history books seem to indicate, for murder and mayhem, but because Villon insults the foul, Princess Charlotte chasing, Duke of Burgundy.
      Although it's relatively breezy and easygoing, THE BELOVED ROGUE has a few strange, rough edges. This is the second John Barrymore silent film I've seen, and it's the second one in which he's gone through physical torment for Love. In this case it's a jarringly well-staged trial by fire. Some of the minor players are strange, too. There's a bouncy dwarf and Dick Sutherland as the palace executioner. Sutherland suffered from acromegaly, a disease that distorts the facial feature. It's the same disease Rondo Hatton - the Creeper in the Basil Rathbone/Sherlock Holmes The Pearl of Death - suffered from. In other words there's something side-show exploitative to this movie that some may find more jarring than entertaining.
      3 out of 5 stars great film - horrible ending.......2005-03-22
      Everything is right about this film until the ending. Barrymore is fantastic as is Conrad Veidt. Sets are immense and Barrymore's tragic scene when he removes is clown makeup, knowing he is exiled, is one of the two or three greatest acting scenes in film. And John proves himself a fine comedian in many scenes. But the ending---there is none!
      There is no conclusion, nothing but a tremendous build up to a confrontation that never occures. For me it destroys the film. But this, along with Svengali, contains probably Barrymore's two best roles.
      5 out of 5 stars Entertaining, bizarre swashbuckler.......2002-08-13
      With the exception of two earlier films, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (1920) and The Sea Beast (1926), THE BELOVED ROGUE is more a personal statement by its star, John Barrymore, than any film he ever made. Designed as a romp through 15th century Paris (in a snowstorm, no less), ROGUE is both inventive and bizarre as Barrymore's Gothic tastes were given free rein by United Artists.
      The actor specifically wanted to avoid the "Hollywood" type of situations where the hero rescues the heroine and both live happily ever after. Despite the film's inventiveness, the plot eventually works itself out along the more traditional lines that Barrymore wanted to avoid like the plague. It was said that he was unhappy with the finished product but many years after his death, when ROGUE was considered a lost film, a subsequent owner of Barrymore's house found a mint 35mm print of this film stored away in the basement. Perhaps that print is the one used for this dvd, courtesy of Mr. Barrymore himself.
      Since the film seeks a de-glamourized view of the Middle Ages, fans of Hollywood swashbuckers made during the 1930s and 40s will probably be surprised - dismayed may be a better word - at the dingy surroundings and deformed characters present in many scenes. Barrymore revelled in this type of setting and perhaps felt justified that he could never have played such parts had he remained on the stage. As it turned out, the film rights to the hit stage play, "If I Were King," were not available so Barrymore and company had to cobble a story together based on public domain information on Francois Villon, steering clear from any story elements original to the play.
      THE BELOVED ROGUE on the whole is an enjoyable if somewhat creepy swashbuckler of a type never really duplicated during the sound era. Now if they only added some bonus material like Barrymore's 1926 home movie, Vagabonding on the Pacific, we'd really shout for joy!
