Of all the documentaries that deal with the horrible events of September 11, 2001, National Geographic's two-part, 3-1/2-hour program Inside 9/11 is the only one to trace the evolution of Osama bin Laden's reign of terror from its origins in the Soviet-Afghan war of the early 1980s to 9/11 and beyond. Presented as a comprehensive timeline that culminates in the hijacking of four passenger jets (including those that destroyed the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York), the program incorporates news footage and archival photos, computer graphics, thoroughly researched documentation, and eyewitness interviews to build an epic chronology of Islamic fundamentalism, carried out by radical sects which, in bin Laden's own words, "love death" with a religious fervor that was largely dismissed, in the early stages of terrorist assembly, by American intelligence services. The stage is set for bin Laden's well-financed orchestration of al Qaeda activities, and Inside 9/11 reaches a factual fever pitch as it focuses on the major players (including 9/11 architect Khalil Shaikh Mohammed, hijacker pilots Mohamed Atta and Ziad Jarrah, and other "sleeper cell" terrorists) as the countdown to 9/11 continues. What emerges from this minute-by-minute account is, in the harsh light of history, a much-needed understanding of how 9/11 happened, the conditions that led to lapses in CIA and FBI cooperation, airport security, and the "holy war" that bin Laden had so effectively precipitated. Subsequent, post-9/11 suicide missions are also included in this expansive chronology, making it potently clear that the war on terror will continue, and in some respects has only just begun. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars MINUTE BY MINUTE HAPPENINGS.......2007-09-02

I just viewed this DVD. The release date on this one is 2005, it has 2 DVDs and it does not have the Commemorative Edition in black at the top of the DVD. So the picture here is a bit misleading but the front cover itself looks like the one here.

Disc 1: To be honest I didn't watch it all. I do not, in any way, wish to "understand" terrorist actions or the finatics that take part in it. Yes,there's theories of "conspiracy" with all the warning signs prior to 9/11 but since I'm not privy to government secrets I have no way of knowing if they're warranted or not. No matter what major event happens, there's always a conspiracy theory that follows. I didn't want this DVD for political reasons. But I will say, I'll never understand why America allows people to gather for the simple purpose of spewing forth hatred and violence toward others. We have freedom of speech but I do not believe that talk of this nature is what our forefathers were thinking of.

Disc 2: This disc is why I want this DVD. It shows a minute by minute account of Sept. 11th from the terrorist finatics at the various airports to the sounds of emergency beepers going off on the emergency personnel trapped in the tower rubble. This DVD has short accounts by survivors of the towers, rescue personnel and a few family members that lost loved ones. No lengthy, tear at your heart, interviews. My imagination can do that quite nicely without actually hearing the words.

So 4 stars because all I want is disc 2 and I wish these two discs had been sold separately. I love the way NG laid out the whole program. Each time showing the time of what was about to happen. I could follow the entire day, minute by minute. This is what I want and if there's other programs put out in this same format, I'm not aware of them so I have no way to compare.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD and an excellent review........2007-01-14

The DVD is ecellent. The review I refer to is written by KHEMIN on this page. It could have easily been the epilogue for this DVD. And it is not a minority view. Caesar's (another reviewer) assertion that the CIA hung out in his town keeping an eye out wouldn't surprise me in the least, considering the crew that hangs out there. I also have no doubt either that after September 11, 2001, there have been more CIA assigned to your neighborhood Caesar. Get used to it, pal.

5 out of 5 stars In-depth Examination of Events.......2007-01-09

The documentary is a very in-depth examination of the events of September the 11th as well as the build-up to the attacks. It is a 5-star National Geographic production. I previewed parts of it to my high school classes and they were completely engaged. Additional bonus features that could assist with the use of the video in a classroom environment could have been useful. It's a long watch but worth ever minute.

5 out of 5 stars excellent addition to anyone's collection.......2007-01-05

this dvd pretty much out shines all the rest out there. it tells everything about 9/11, including very interesting news of pre-9/11. worth every penny, and will be a very historical documentary to show your kids/grandkids in the future.

5 out of 5 stars A very valuable resource.......2006-11-08

There are lots of documentaries about the events of 9/11, and all of them have their strengths and weaknesses. This one has weaknesses, too, but I don't think they matter much. It was made with a purpose in mind: to examine the evolution of bin Laden's operation beginning with the resistance to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1980 and ending with the events of 9/11. It is not-- and it's not intended to be-- a comprehensive overview of US foreign policy, the operation of the CIA, the rise of fundamentalist Islam, or anything else. Rather, it's the narrative of the time line that ends with the hijackings on 9/11.

It's composed of news footage, still photos, and interviews with eyewitnesses and participants. The end result is a sequential narrative explaining how 9/11 happened and suggesting why the intelligence community failed to understand what was happening. As is the case with most National Geographic documentaries, the production values on this DVD are very high.

Is this the last word about 9/11? Of course not, and I'd be amazed if the writers and producers thought it was. Rather, it's one resource that's very valuable for anyone who wants to understand those events. There are no doubt other resources, but that doesn't detract from the value of this one.

The first movie produced by Afghanistan filmmakers after the fall of the Taliban, Osama is a searing portrait of life under the oppressive fundamentalist regime. Because women are not allowed to work, a widow disguises her young daughter (Marina Golbahari) as a boy so they won't starve to death. Simply walking the streets is frightening enough, but when the disguised girl is rounded up with all the boys in the town for religious training, her peril becomes absolutely harrowing. Golbahari's face--beautiful but taut with terror--is riveting. The movie captures both her plight and the miseries of daily life in spare, vivid images. At one point, her mother is nearly killed for exposing her feet while riding on the back of a bicycle; for the entire scene, the camera shows only her feet, with the spokes of the wheel radiating out behind as she lowers her burka over them. --Bret Fetzer

Very sad ending though. Best movie I've ever seen without a single real actor- they just went in with a script & asked locals to act it.

Note: Pashtu with English subtitles.

The '03 film `Osama' is a searing indictment by writer/director Siddiq Barmak on the deplorable treatment of women in Afghanistan under the stern, uncompromising regime of the Taliban. This is not a film for those hoping to wile away an hour or two watching some light-hearted entertainment. Yes the production values are extremely good and the acting is excellent, especially the performances of the young female star Marina Golbahari (Osama) as Osama and Arif Herati as her street peddler friend Espandi. However Siddiq Barmak did not make this film to entertain. This is a movie with a message and there's not confusion about what he's trying to convey.

Everyone should see this film. You may not like what you see, but you certainly won't forget it. I assume that was Barmak goal from the beginning.

5 out of 5 stars Osama.......2007-07-23

An astonishing debut from director Barmak, and the first film to be made in post-Taliban Afghanistan, "Osama" paints a horrific portrait of daily life under the oppressive fundamentalist regime, where women are completely devalued and only men allowed to work, leaving all-female families, with husbands martyred in battle, to starve. With continual fear of exposure etched in her doe-like eyes, Golbahari, a young Afghani non-actor who plays Osama, breaks our hearts each time we look at her. Don't miss this trenchant, eye-opening film.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Vision of a Horrifying Regime's Role in Ruining the Life of One Child.......2007-04-29

Osama
As a child, I was told that "elegance" is actually achieved through "simplicity." I was reminded of the integral relationship between these two seemingly disparate concepts while viewing Siddiq Barmak's remarkable OSAMA for the first time. The film is elegantly composed and framed, but the reason the film's "text" is so powerful, I think, is because it is told with such exquisite simplicity. The film is the first of its kind, a film shot wholly in post-Taliban Afghanistan with Afghani people starring in it, with Afghani production members, and with an Afghani writer/director. Also, it is a true story based on the lives of actual people living in Afghanistan The story is told through the eyes of a beautiful young 12-year-old girl who is forced to cut off her hair and don male clothing to help her mother and grandmother survive. Women are not allowed to leave the home without a man. And, these women have no such man since the father died in the war. So, the young girl becomes a boy in appearance and is re-named "Osama." The film follows this young girl's dangerous life as she is the victim of a string of atrocities when her true gender is discovered. The elegance and beauty of her story is entirely moving because of its genuine, unpretentious simplicity. You will forever be haunted by the sadness of her great, dark eyes as her destiny is lost in the "axis of evil."

4 out of 5 stars Osama.......2007-03-27

This film is a wake up call to make you aware of why we are helping in Afghanistan to fight the Taliban. It is an emotional film and will make you have great compassion for the people in Afghanistan and dislike the actions of the Taliban.

"Meeting Osama Bin Laden" is a unique biography of one of the world's most notorious figures. Of those who have met Osama Bin Laden, few have dared to talked about him--until now. "Meeting Osama Bin Laden" use first-person accounts to trace the inflectional events in Bin Laden's life, from his privileged childhood in Saudi Arabia to his battles with the Soviet Union in Afghanistan, culminating in the events leading up to September 11, 2001. With more than a dozen interviews, including his grade school teacher, family friends, fellow Al Qaeda soldiers, and Western journalists, this documentary provides extraordinary insight into the man who masterminded the most deadly terrorist act of our times.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Look Inside.......2007-05-01

PBS's "Meeting Osama Bin Laden" is a well-made documentary, giving insight into the life of one of the most sought-after terrorists of our time. Well researched and including interviews with people who have met or spent time with bin Laden, the film portrays bin Laden as a normal, peaceful man, who grew up as a withdrawn, quiet and shy child. What made bin Laden who he is today? This documentary attempted to aswer it.

Many books were written about Hitler, Himmler and other evil mongers in our history, but none of them managed to point at one event, or even a series of events that could be identified as the turning point for these people, a turning point leading them into committing despicable crimes. Same goes for bin Laden. Raised in a rich family, receiving good schooling, I couldn't see any triggers that would have moved Osama to become so filled with hate that he issued a religious proclamation authorizing the killing of all Americans, including women and children.

Granted, there are several situations in which one could see that Osama was shunned by even his own state and his own family, which in turn could make him bitter, but no event so big that would justify such pathological hatred. Like Hitler, after this documentary, I see bin Laden as a sociopath and a megalomaniac with incredible charisma, who was in the right place at he right time. Naturally, further research is needed, but this documentary is great for initial studies into the life and mind of the world's worst terrorist.

These are not a Hollywood action flicks, but a real look at how these operations are actually carried-out, and the nature of the men who are engaged in these types of activities.

British Frontline Footage Terrorism - Since the bombing of the King David Hotel in 1946 to the American hostage crisis in the late 1970s to the September 11th tragedy, acts of terrorism have become more prevalent. With technological advances, terrorism has become increasingly unpredictable and consequently more dangerous. With the suicide bomb, the very nature of terrorism changed. PLO terrorist groups such as Fatah, were protected and encouraged. The result saw hi-jacking, suicide raids, and hostage killings. Subsequently, many countries began developing counter terrorist teams to guard against left-wing anarchist groups looking for revolution, extreme fundamentalists seeking martyrdom, and those fighting for nationalism and separatist causes. Special Forces - The British SAS (Special Air Service) is one of the most heroic special forces teams in the world. Like the SBS (Special Boat Service), their efforts date back to the 1940s when they secretly went behind enemy lines to fight the Nazis and combat jungle warfare in Indonesia and Malaysia. Since then, the undercover operations of the SAS have included everything from border patrol in the jungle to preventing Marxist coups on Grenada. In 1980 the world watched as gunmen held 26 people hostage at the Iranian embassy in London. After a six-day stand off, the SAS stormed in with split-second timing and daring precision. After just 12 minutes, the rescue was complete and 21 hostages were saved. From south Georgia to the Congo, the missions of the SAS list a wide range of fine-tuned maneuvers, such as dangerous tree jumping and parachuting, to their credit.
