John Hughes's popular 1985 teen drama finds a diverse group of high school students--a jock (Emilio Estevez), a metalhead (Judd Nelson), a weirdo (Ally Sheedy), a princess (Molly Ringwald), and a nerd (Anthony Michael Hall)--sharing a Saturday in detention at their high school for one minor infraction or another. Over the course of a day, they talk through the social barriers that ordinarily keep them apart, and new alliances are born, though not without a lot of pain first. Hughes (Sixteen Candles), who wrote and directed, is heavy on dialogue but he also thoughtfully refreshes the look of the film every few minutes with different settings and original viewpoints on action. The movie deals with such fundamentals as the human tendency toward bias and hurting the weak, and because the characters are caught somewhere between childhood and adulthood, it's easy to get emotionally involved in hope for their redemption. Preteen and teenage kids love this film, incidentally. The DVD release includes production notes, cast and crew bios, widescreen presentation, Dolby sound, closed captioning, optional French and Spanish soundtracks, and optional Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Pure 80's Excitement!.......2007-09-17

Ally Sheedy! Molly Ringwald! Emilio Estevez! Judd Nelson! Does it get more 80's than that? I don't think so. One of the best teen movies of the 80's; it not the very best!

1 out of 5 stars No better than begging at the table, doggie.......2007-09-02

When did dysfunction become something you celebrate with evening family screenings on the courthouse lawn with funny hats, foam-filled chairs, sacs of nutritionless substances and an out-of-place Husker Du reference? Or is it? I like to split up into three sections and go zooming across the screen, feet up like hooks, tail grinding in the gravy. How does a director even convince human beings to act in such a manner? Hi, have you heard, I'm the nerd. Then they show it at the retro soc hop iGasm. And you take your disillusioned significant other, palms pasty, hands clasped awkwardly and tight, reaching toward one last empty grasp at what is now long past, becoming a biased memory. You know what a breakfast club is? It's where you compare the size of your sausages and -- ladies in da hizzo -- your eggs.

5 out of 5 stars "Don't you forget about me...".......2007-08-31

The Breakfast Club is still one of the finest teen flicks of all-time. Talented and an energetic cast which includes: Emilo Estevez, Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, Ally Sheedy, and Judd Nelson. This is a film I can watch over and over again, it's that good! If you want a great comedy/drama then The Breakfast Club is for you. Ally Sheedy steals every scene with her strange and lovable behavior. I highly recommend checking this winner out!

2 out of 5 stars Why bother?.......2007-08-20

Let me say from the get-go that I truly believe The Breakfast Club to be one of the best movies of all time. So I was excited to hear about a new edition. Sad to say, it is simply not worth it--at all! So what of the music was remastered? Yippy Shermer Skippy. If the film stock had been restored and remastered, it might be different. But the music/soundtrack? Yawn.

Then there's the fact that there are no extras, no deleted scenes, nothing.

And lastly, I was majorly annoyed to be forced to watch four movie ads prior to getting to the menu. You CANNOT hit Stop, you CANNOT hit Menu, you CANNOT hit Pause...once this DVD is in, you will always, always have to sit through four movie ads before you get to the menu! "Action forbidden by disc" is what you'll see. Lame!

Keep your old DVD copy. The picture is the same, and that's what counts. Call me when the real extras edition shows up with interviews, extra scenes, etc.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST OF THE BEST TEEN FLICKS.......2007-08-09

If you have teens in you house, make sure they see this flick. Ok, so there is some strong language but don't kid yourself, they know it already. What this film has to say about the teenage condition, school, teachers and parents should not be missed. It should be required viewing for all in-coming high school freshman. Brilliant performances by all, a great cast, and a sterling view of what it is like (what it has always been like) to be a teen and face the pressures of growing up, expressing your individuality, coping with who you are, and learning to live, love and accept others for what they may be.

Ironically, everyone will walk away understanding how misunderstanding they have been of high school kids.

This dark comedy from 1989 was a good showcase for Winona Ryder, playing a high school girl brought into a clique of bitchy classmates (all named Heather), and Christian Slater, doing his early Jack Nicholson thing. While Ryder's character mulls over the consequences of giving up one set of friends for another, her association with a new boy (Slater) in school turns out to have deadly consequences. Director Michael Lehmann turned this unusual film into something more than another teen-death flick. There is real wit and sharp satire afoot, and the very fusion of horror and comedy is provocative in itself. Heathers remains a kind of benchmark in contemporary cinema for bringing surreal intelligence into Hollywood films. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Hell-arious Dark Comedy From The '80's.......2007-08-22

I watched this movie so much when I was a teen that I can't believe I've never plugged it here before now. Coming in at the tail end of the image-obsessed 1980's and skewering the many high school films made in that decade, Heathers casts a Jack Nicholson-esque Christian Slater with a raging and pseudo-self-loathing Winona Ryder (and a pre-Brenda Walsh Shannon Daugherty) in a sick and absolutely delightful tale of homicide and suicide among popularity-seeking social climbers and mainstream rejects at a typical suburban high school. If someone crossed one of Tim Burton's daydreams and John Hughes' nightmares, the result might just look something like this cunning masterpiece set amid the twilight zone of high school cliques. Getting a lot right in its parody of adolescent sub-cultures, teen angst, and the quest for popularity at all costs, Heathers shows us how one semi-accidental killing of a bitchy it-girl by the young, er, lovers, played by Ryder and Slater, sets off a chain reaction that leads to Slater's plan to blow up his school during a pep rally, and thereby hold the entire student body to its unwitting pledge to commit suicide. The brilliant dialogue in Heathers (and if you really don't know how this film got its name, you'll enjoy finding out) reminds me of Dorothy Parker's stinging wit, and there are expressions here (like the one about a chainsaw...) that still stick in my mind to this day, fourteen years after I first saw this old favorite of mine. Buy this DVD, or rent it, see Heathers for the first time or the first time in a long time, because it's just plain worth it!

4 out of 5 stars Heathers.......2007-05-25

This is proberbly Winona Ryders and Shannon Dohertys best movie... Always makes you laugh and is a good movie for a quiet nite at home...

5 out of 5 stars i loourved it.......2007-03-13

Well, i have to say this is now one of my favorite movies now. Christian Slater is the epiphany of the perfect phycopath. and he's hot sooo.....yeah. its a good movie

5 out of 5 stars "Dear Diary, my teen-angst...now has a body count.".......2007-01-14

The 'kill them all let god sort them out' version of the going to high school in the 80s some of us only dreamed of at the time . Little did we know that we'd be dealing with the ' Swatch dogs and Diet Coke heads' the rest of our sorry, outcast ,underachieving lives. The best of the teen films of my generation and Winona Ryder is hot despite the lamentable clothing and hair styles. Christian Slater as an eerie precurser of Columbine, wherein teen angst really becomes homicidal.
hard to find generally on dvd so get it while you can-has extras and an acceptable transfer to dvd.

5 out of 5 stars Love Heathers!.......2007-01-03

I freaking love this movie. I used to watch it when I was little when it came on Comedy Central. It's one of my favorites for sure. When I saw Mean Girls, I thought it was a rip off of Heathers. Love Winona and Christian. Just fabulous.

An oddball love story about a fey loner named Sam (Johnny Depp), who falls in love with the mentally unbalanced Joon (Mary Stuart Masterson), who lives in the care of her protective brother Benny (Aidan Quinn). This 1993 story is hard to swallow, with its message that love can conquer a brand of mental illness that manifests itself in pyromania: Joon has a bad habit of going a bit around the bend and setting fires, but Sam's tender care apparently has the cure for what ails her. Still, if you want proof that Depp has significant chops as a physical comedian, give this film a try: He does note-perfect renditions of slapstick routines made famous by Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. --Marshall Fine

I'd forgotten what a great movie this is! Johnny Depp, Mary Stuart Masterson, and Aidan Quinn are fabulous. This most untraditional romance will really touch your heart.

5 out of 5 stars Benny & Joon.......2007-08-23

A wonderful but somewhat little-known film that continues to add to the range of Johnny Depp.

5 out of 5 stars I love this movie!.......2007-08-03

This is one of my favorite moview for the human interest, the delicate handling of a difficult reality for many people...the humor and the performances. I have used the poker game scene to inspire "yardsale poker" were we all bet with used possessions and it was a BLAST. I never won or bet a cousin....yet. :)

5 out of 5 stars Calling all Johnny Depp Fans!.......2007-07-24

I will keep this short and sweet. If you are a Johnny Depp fan, this is a must to add to your collection. It is a great story and as always, Johnny Depp is a great actor.

5 out of 5 stars Psychologically stimulating.......2007-07-21

Interesting concepts, moving, heartfelt, wonderfully entertaining and comidic humor. Another great film wonderfully directed with the young Johnny Depp. A gamut of emotions are stirred. A clean, funny and beautifully written piece.

Part of growing up is discovering something that inspires a true passion within and allowing that passion to guide one's actions and choices. The process of self-discovery isn't easy, and when 15-year-old Patrick McCardle (High School Musical's Zac Efron) realizes that playing baseball is more his father's dream than his own, it's an unlikely friendship with old man Houston Jones (Bill Cobbs), a recluse and horse trainer, that inspires Patrick's newfound passion for the exciting world of horse jumping. Patrick and his father (William R. Moses) clash over Patrick's decision to give up baseball and spend time training for the Derby Cup race with Houston, but eventually Patrick and his father come to a mutual understanding and gain a whole new sense of respect for one another as they begin to really talk about and listen to each other's dreams and desires. The road to becoming a derby rider is difficult, but as Houston and Patrick work together, the two share dreams and disappointments and become incredibly close. In the end, Houston, a most unlikely role model, winds up having a profoundly positive impact on Patrick's life both on and off the racetrack. (Ages 5 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant family film.......2007-08-10

15-year old Patrick (Zac Efron) is new in town and has problems: He can't seem to please his jock father (William R. Moses) and he runs afoul of Randy, the town bully, when both boys are attracted to the same pretty girl. Patrick's only friend is one-time horse trainer and long-time alcoholic, Houston Jones (Bill Cobbs), who sees something special in the boy. Houston gives him a horse and trains him to ride in the State Steeplechase Cup race, but Randy, the reigning champ, decides to make Patrick's life miserable.

This low-budget but pleasant 2005 film was never shown in theatres, but has been released on DVD following Zac Efron's mega-successes in High School Musical (Encore Edition) and Hairspray. There's no denying Efron's Tiger Beat-cuteness, and he does a fine job in an undemanding role, but if you want to see a real actor, take a look at Bill Cobbs. He's been playing small character parts in TV and movies for years, but this time he's the star and absolutely owns the screen. His craggy face and gravelly voice masterfully express the only real emotion in the film and he's a pleasure to watch.

The story plays like an After School Special; all obstacles are easily overcome - the kid goes from non-rider to race winner, bonds with his father, and gets the girl - all in a matter of weeks. Adults may find it predictable and a bit bland, but the wholesome message about finding your passion and working hard for it makes "The Derby Stallion" just right for family viewing.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Movie.......2007-07-12

Our granddaughter is 6 years old, and loves anything to do with horses. She has watched this movie many, many times. Its a great story for the family also.

4 out of 5 stars Great Family Film!.......2007-06-29

I was encouraged to purchase this DVD by my fifteen-year-old sister, she's been a big fan of Zac Efron's from "High School Musical". She was not disappointed - we both loved it (plus Zac is really cute)! It's a sweet story and has a lot of positive messages. What a pleasure to sit down and see a nice family film again... it's a rarity. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Wins Our Derby.......2007-06-25

With all the junk out there, it's nice to watch a movie with such positive values and one which can be shared with the whole family. Zac Efron is endearing -- it's not surprising he has soared to stardom in "High School Musical." And Bill Cobbs as the wise old horseman is great. I loved the mentor chemistry between them. There is a lot to like in this movie and I recommend it heartily.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I was hoping for..........2007-06-24

The Derby Stallion could have been done alot better. It appeared to be a very low budget film. Its about this boy who decides he wants to ride steeplechase and convinces his parents to allow him to. The riding was very sloppy and some of the sences of him first riding were un realistic and alot of it was put into slow motion, like when he was first learning to jump. The two horses that played in the movie were also two completley different colors. The movie idea was good, but they could have spent more time on teaching the actor to ride and handle horses instead of what appeared to be a very rushed movie. Not a good choice for people who know a thing or two about horses.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-03-09

My two toddler's love this movie. It was so hard to find and Amazon had it. This is a great kid's movie! It is a must have for all families.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Movie for entire family.......2007-01-11

This movie is a classic. We owned it on VHS and the tape finally fell apart, so I ordered it for our family for Christmas. Good for all ages, nice night of entertainment for all of us.

5 out of 5 stars solid acting and excellent story.......2006-10-26

I really liked this film. It's not a groundbreaking movie in any way, though. It's about a bunch of underdog kids who aren't interested in football until a coach comes along and changes their minds. Throughout the movie we see the kids working out and trying hard to prepare for the match against the other more talented (and unlikeable) team. It's pretty much the same thing we've seen in the Mighty Ducks except now it's about football.

It's just a typical family movie that sends the message to children that even if you're small and think you don't have any talent, you actually DO have the talent to play football, hockey, basketball, whatever. One of the characters is a girl who doesn't know if she wants to play football with the boys or be a cheerleader like all the other girls.

Rick Moranis once again plays that shy, quiet character he does so well in other films such as Honey I Shrunk the Kids. It's hard to believe he's now a country singer (no, I'm not kidding). Ed O'Neil doesn't quite play the jerk character you'd expect from the Married with Children show. He's not really a nice guy either, though.

I find it interesting that the team names are the Giants (the good guys) vs. the Cowboys (the bad guys) because the Monday Night Football game this week were those two teams facing each other (with the Giants winning).

3 out of 5 stars Predictable - ultimately this is Ed O'Neill's film.......2006-08-06

When Ed O'Neill was cast into the role as Al Bundy in the late 1980s comedy, "Married with Children", it quickly would become a role synonymous with O'Neill himself. At the same time it catapulted O'Neill into a major star. It seemed natural that O'Neill would soon start to do feature films. However, for the most part O'Neill's feature film resume has never lived up to his role as Al Bundy. In 1994, while still on "Married with Children", O'Neill would team up with Rick Moranis to star in a comedy called "Little Giants". While I'd hardly call "Little Giants" a groundbreaking or award-winning movie, it still was a pretty good film. Much of what made this movie very good has to be credited to the talents of O'Neill himself.

For the most part, "Little Giants" follows a familiar style of story. O'Neill plays Kevin O'Shea. Kevin is a local hometown former All-American football hero. Kevin is now retired from Football and owns a successful car dealership in his hometown of Urbania. He lives in an nice house with his wife and two daughters. Also living in Urbania is Kevin's brother Danny O'Shea (played by Rick Moranis). Danny's life hasn't been quite as successful. Danny's wife had abandoned him and his daughter Becky many years ago - living Danny in the role as single parent. Danny runs a service station in Urbania, but doesn't nearly live the lifestyle of Kevin. When Kevin is asked to coach a peewee football team to represent Urbania, he takes the role very competitively as he has taken Football all of his life. When Danny sees Kevin having tryouts for the Football team, he becomes very upset with the way Kevin is handling things. Kevin only picks the best players to play. While Danny's daughter Becky deserves to play, Kevin basically leaves her off the team because he is a girl Not only does Danny feel Becky deserves to play, but he feels that all kids deserve a chance to play on Urbania's peewee football team - no matter how good they are. This leads Danny to form his own football team - with the "castoffs and misfits" who didn't make Kevin's team. Because the peewee football league will only allow one team to represent Urbania, Kevin and Danny have their teams square off on the field to decide who will represent Urbania. The film then focuses on Danny's attempts to build and train a rag-tagged Football team up against his brother's well-oiled machine.

There are a couple of interesting subplots going on in this film. The first one involves Becky - Danny's daughter. We see Becky struggle with walking a fine-line between being a tom-boy and a teenage girl. Since Becky is a main part of Danny's team, this has an integral role in the film. The other involves Danny and Kevin's attempt to recruit a blue chip prospect named "Spike" - a new boy in town, with a "little league father".

The movie also uses the NFL connection in a couple of ways. The first is the team names. Kevin's team adopts the helmets and uniforms of the Dallas Cowboys while Danny's team will adopt the helmets of the New York Giants. Being a New York Giants fan, it made me even root more for the underdog "Little" New York Giants against the hated Dallas Cowboys (On the other hand, Cowboy fans may not feel the same way). The other involves some cameos of some famous NFL stars. These NFL stars happen to be passing through Urbania and lend a hand to Danny as he is training the Little Giants for the big game. These players include Tim Brown, Steve Emtman, Bruce Smith, Emmitt Smith, and of course John Madden - all of whom are playing themselves. As he does in the broadcast booth, Madden will also entertain on the big screen.

In this movie, Rick Moranis is once again cast into the wimpy, unsuccessful character. We see this happen in a movie he does later on with Tom Arnold called "Big Bully". This is a style of character that has almost become synonymous with Moranis himself. While Moranis' character of Danny is the hero - he becomes a difficult character to root for. It's O'Neill's character of Kevin that dominates. This is not because Kevin is "stronger" than Danny - it is because that Ed O'Neill is a superior actor to Rick Moranis. The only interesting thing that happens to the character of Danny O'Shea is how the idea of coaching up against his brother begins to consume him - and impact his relationship with daughter Becky.

The idea of an underdog team going up against the established team is something we've seen time and time again. The other concept of the weaker brother going up against the stronger brother is also something that has been seen many times. While "Little Giants" will entertain audiences throughout the movie, the familiar concepts of underdog and brother against brother are completely predictable. On top of that, the ending will also be completely predictable - including how most of the big game between the Giants and Cowboys go. On a side note, the kids playing the members of the Little Giants team are very fun to watch.

Still despite the predictability, I still found this a pretty decent movie. Even with the movie being very predictable, the nice thing is that the underdog Giants will become a very root-able team against the Cowboys. And of course, Ed O'Neill will shine big time in this movie. This is a good movie for young and old to watch and one that I would recommend.

Caught between the purest of intentions and unimaginative shortcuts to sentimentality, The Mighty is nevertheless rewarding enough to make it worth seeing. Kieran Culkin stars as Kevin, a terminally ill but spirited young boy who befriends a healthy but illiterate social outcast, Maxwell (Elden Henson). They realize that together they are a stronger, braver force than they are as individuals, and the various opportunities they have to confront persecutors and memories of their bad fathers are handled very effectively by director Peter Chelsom (a very original filmmaker who made the terrific Funny Bones). The curious adult casting includes Sharon Stone (a natural scene-stealer even when she doesn't intend it) as Kevin's saintly mother, and Gillian Anderson in a quite-unbelievable supporting role. Chelsom's lapses in judgment are not terribly significant (imaginary appearances by Camelot-era knights on horseback are the most annoying), though one could argue that a plot to kidnap one of the boys is a cheesy way to underscore the kids' redemptive loyalty to one another. Still, all in all, you can laugh and cry at this tale of rare friendship, and admire the sensitive performances by Chelsom's younger players. --Tom Keogh

A must have. A very inspiring movie that makes you think and view life. Will bring tears to your eyes and for me the characters reminded me my friends. GREAT!!!!

4 out of 5 stars The MIghty--an unusual teen story for the whole family.......2007-08-31

We ordered copies of this DVD after watching this movie on cable. We were impressed by the story line--one smart short handicapped teen befriends a big slow ridiculed teen. We ordered copies for our grandsons, ages 9, 7 and 3. But this is a movie for everyone. Very moving, very hopeful story with some adventures thrown in.

5 out of 5 stars The Mighty.......2007-07-19

This is one of the best movies ever made, especially for children struggling with identity issues (all children)! The acting is superb. The story comes from the book, "Freak, the Mighty." Adults enjoy it as much as the kids. My family has watched it several times. Kieran Culkin is a marvelous child actor. It is Sharon Stone's most domestic role to date, and she does a wonderful job. I love it!!!

5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful movie!.......2007-05-17

This was such a touching movie. If you enjoyed the movie Simon Birch then you will love this movie. It's inspirational and a tear jerker!

5 out of 5 stars A Must See Movie.......2007-05-13

While watching this movie it takes you back to when you were in school..and the truth about how cruel kids can be. But at the same time how they can stand up for what is right. I have loaned this movie out to everyone I know. They all have purchased it after watching it.
Another must see movie ( Pay it Forward) you won't forget either of these movies.

It's appropriate that this extravaganza of lowbrow cinema had its premiere at the 2006 Cinevegas Film Festival, because what happens in Artie Lange's Beer League should stay in Artie Lange's Beer League. Lange is most recognizable for his stint in the Mad TV ensemble, but probably more idolized by the people who will get wild kicks from his leading man debut as the resident guest-baiter and booze/scatological/flatulence/sex joke expert on Howard Stern's radio show. Those are the same kinds of laughs this movie relies on in telling the wisp of a story about a bunch of New Jersey boneheads whose lives are fulfilled by softball games and the beer-guzzling that goes on before, during, and after. Artie's team is proud to be in the bottom ranks of their league, especially when brawls erupt at games against their slick, archrival team. Artie and the rest of his team know these arrogant jerks in their immaculate black (of course) uniforms are unbeatable, so it's only natural that Artie thinks its easier to just beat the hell out of them. The local cop who's had to deal with both teams finally gets so angry with the escalating brawls that he issues an ultimatum: Whichever team loses the season has to disband and never play on the league again. It's kind of an utterly tasteless version of The Bad News Bears for people who like their movies vulgar, offensive, misogynistic, and often really funny in spite of it all. Some of the subplots and supporting players include Ralph Macchio as one of Artie's childhood friends who's about to get married (cue depraved bachelor party scene with lots of topless babes), Mary Birdsong from Reno 911! as a kooky waitress, and a delightful turn by crusty character actor Seymour Cassel as Artie's teammate Dirt, who may be old but loves booze, fisticuffs, and debauchery as much as anyone. For some reason, Artie's foul-mouthed slobbery attracts a local Jersey girl (Cara Buono), even though he's jobless and still lives with his mom (Laurie Metcalf, who should get some kind of good sport award). The buffoonery doesn't just stop with the movie. There's also more than two hour of bonus material tailored for Artie Lange enthusiasts who probably number more than you'd think -- whether they'd ever admit it or not. --Ted Fry

5 out of 5 stars Great Beer Movie!!!.......2007-08-31

Saw this on Comedy Central a while back. Artie does a good job being a Drunk Softball player. The Old Guy in the Film is Hilarious. It Even has The Karate Kid. Now, That's Good enough reason to Buy. Definatley in the League with, Beerfest, Old School, Dazed & Confused, Super Troopers, Animal House, Detroit Rock City, Wedding Crashers, Anchorman, Van Wilder, Road Trip, Black Sheep, ETC. You Know, Stupid Funny. If You Liked Beerfest. Do Not Miss Out On This Movie!

4 out of 5 stars Big Stern Fan.......2007-08-23

I am a sirius subscriber. I had a bad feeling about this movie, but wanted to watch as a fan of the Stern show. Artie's talents are much better used on the radio, than this movie. It's one liner, after one liner. The production value is quite low. Ralph Machio may as well be part of the set design, because his part is so miniscule. The story is non-existent. And the comedy is at the 4th grade level. But there are a few big laughs. Anyways, for fans of the radio show, this is probably a must see, and I'm happy with my purchase. But for non-listeners my rating drops to a 2 out of 5.

1 out of 5 stars Horrendous, Atrocious, Horrible...See where this is going?.......2007-08-22

Artie Lange...It must have been the Whiskey talking! Beer League is undoubtedly one of the worst films ever produced. The acting is third rate and the talent is D-List, at best. Ralph Macchio is alive and a supporting actor to Artie Lange...Dude, time to hang it up.

Plot: Lovable Slob/Loser who lives at home with his mom takes on high school rival (greasy haired guido/lothario) for the rights to stay in their softball league.

Pros: None, except for seeing "The Pitching Machine" in action.

Cons: Everything...especially acting, dialogue, casting...etc.

Bottom Line: Skip this one and start your own beer league.

3 out of 5 stars Funny, but..........2007-08-01

I'm a Howard Stern fan, and I'm familiar with Artie's work, but i just don't find him to be as funny as other people do. The script is written on about an 8th grade play level, and the acting was choppy.
It's good for a few laughs, but I would waste my money buying it. See if you can borrow it from one of your friends.

4 out of 5 stars Crude, but funny.......2007-07-17

Beer League is a RIOT. Not something to watch with your kids.

Think Animal House but cruder, and with baseball imnstead of books.

I was looking forward to the arrival of the DVD having only seen this excellent movie as a dark and grainy download from Veoh. Boy, was I disappointed to find that some key scenes have been cut from the DVD! How dare they do that and destroy the integrity of this fine piece of coming of age teen angst!

4 out of 5 stars Welcome to the Gay Arthouse.......2007-08-15

You know you're not in Hollywood territory when a film features long, static shots of the main character watching television. I knew this was going to be an arthouse movie going in, and I believe that helped with my expectations. If you label it a gay coming of age story (although it, intrinsically, is), I think you get a much different view of what you are in for. Knowing that I was going to watch a slow but lovingly crafted film light on plot but long on beauty, I went in not expecting much and came away enchanted with this little movie. Honestly, I had to look up Malcolm Stumpf's credits as I hadn't remembered him from anything else, and the last thing he did was a Madonna movie almost ten years ago. Your appreciation of this movie will no doubt depend on how beautiful you think Malcolm is, as he is in virtually every scene, or how much the gay coming of age stuff resonates with you. I was affected on both counts, and so I would highly reccomend this film. It's frame of mind can be summed up by one scene in particular, during lunchtime in an outdoor school cafeteria. Malcolm sits by himself eating some pudding and proceeds to spill some on his crotch. He begins to clean himself and proceeds to get an erection. With utter simplicity, the scene covers adolescent alienation, desire, and the sometime humiliation of school life and boyhood in general, without a single line of dialogue. Check it out if you are in the right mood to watch it.

5 out of 5 stars The Urgency of Now.......2007-08-12

This is one of those films that when you first see it, it shocks you with its intensity. There hasn't been a really great film, at least that I can think of (and I do see a lot of movies!) about what it is like to grow up different.
Wild Tigers is also intense on another level virtually unexplored by movies and that is the boredom of being a kid. Literally these kids in the film lay around and stare at the wall; yet Cam Archer makes it interesting because he is aware of the interiors of his characters. There are moments when you feel as if you know what these kids are feeling and yet powerless to make it any better (like most adults).
Most people might be turned off by the homoerotic storyline but actually that is where it is most interesting, like Brokeback Mountain.
Not everyone really knows what it is like to be different (and they probably don't care to know) but this films seeks to explore what it is like to grow up being different.
Right there is where the film is most powerful because Cam Archer manages to say a lot with few words and a lot of images. By exploring the interiors of these bored kids Cam Archer has actually made an original film which I thought wasn't possible anymore.
If you can get past the differences of others and you are interested in what it is like to be different in all its painful incarnations you will find this movie interesting and heartbreaking.

4 out of 5 stars Tame pussies I have known.......2007-08-11

The movie centres on Logan, a quiet loner who doesn't fit in at school. Most of the other kids ignore Logan but one or two actively dislike him and make it abundantly clear. A geeky boy called Joey is Logan's only friend, although all they really have in common is that they have nothing in common with the rest of the kids at school. They're really just two lonely kids thrown togther by the need for friendship and yet unable to completely cross the divdies that seperate them from each other and from everyone else. Then, one day, one of the in-crowd, a popular older called Rodeo, notices Logan and Logan's life is changed forever.

This is a movie that tries hard to be stylish and relevant and it mostly succeeds. the production values are excellent as is the acting, especially of the three main characters. Although deliberately stylized the movie does manage to caputure the awkwardness and infatuations that lay at the essence of adolescence. In short it smells like teen spirit but liberally doused in mum's perfume.

4 out of 5 stars Good Movie .......2007-08-11

It's a bit cryptic at first, but you get the jist of it. Slightly disappointed in lack of dialog with the main characters - a lot of "B Roll" was used, sometimes a little too much (made if feel as tho the purpose was to run out time [filler]). Not as good as Transnation but better than Tarnation. I plan on buying the soundtrack tho - the song 'Wild Tigers I have Known' is awesome!

Description

Jack Lemmon and Ricky Nelson get that sinking feeling when they pilot THE WACKIEST SHIP IN THE ARMY in this hilarious comedy-adventure. During World War II, the Army recruits Navy officer Rip Crandall (Lemmon) to command a battered old schooner for a top-secret mission. Masquerading as a Japanese fishing boat, this nautical nightmare must smuggle a spy through mine-infested waters of the South Pacific. Unfortunately for Crandall, he has inherited a wild crew of butterfingered landlubbers, including First Officer Tommy Hanson (Nelson). Can the dedicated lieutenant whip these comically inexperienced gobs into shape in time to carry out their perilous mission? Starring: Jack Lemmon (2-time Academy Award® Winner, 1955 Mr. Roberts, 1973 Save the Tiger, 8-time Academy Award® Nominee), Ricky Nelson (Golden Globe® Nominee, 1959, Most Promising Newcomer).

Somehow, I (we) remembered this movie differently from what we just saw and sadly, were dissapointed with the plot (if any), dialogue and the acting.

5 out of 5 stars Where's that DVD? Oh I see it!.......2007-05-17

His is one outstanding film. It is funny, very funny - a real service comedy and it works on several levels. The cast is first rate. Jack Lemmon and Rick Nelson are perfectly cast. A very memorable movie all around. Fond memories.

4 out of 5 stars Wrong Movie.......2007-01-03

This isn't a bad movie, but what I had rather see is a compilation of the seasons that "Wackiest Ship in the Army" was on TV. The TV show was, all told, much superior to this movie. The missions they were sent on and the dangers that they faced were exciting, and at the same time done with much humor. I'm not knocking this movie at all, but I would prefer to see the several seasons of the TV show on DVD. McHale's Navy it definitely wasn't.

5 out of 5 stars They don't make 'em like this anymore........2006-07-10

If you enjoy the comic antics of Jack Lemmon (Grumpy Old Men, Grumpier Old Men), give yourself a treat. Mr. Lemmon's earlier films are well written, campy, and just plain fun! Two of my favorite Lemmon films are HOW TO MURDER YOUR WIFE and THE WACKIEST SHIP IN THE ARMY. Give yourself a fun filled evening. Send the kids out for pizza, turn off the phone, pop some popcorn, and curl up on the sofa with THE WACKIEST SHIP IN THE ARMY. Don't expect a deep "meaningful" plot or some kind of political metaphor. Isn't it time for a good laugh, the way we use to?

Every statuesque, beautiful blonde woman has spent more time in the company of Neanderthals than she cares to remember. Seems it's always been that way: Clan of the Cave Bear, a 1986 feature scripted by John Sayles and based on Jean Auel's bestselling novel set in prehistoric times, stars former mermaid Daryl Hannah as an intelligent Cro-Magnon woman adopted and raised by lesser-evolved Neanderthals. Berated for her brains, sexually exploited, and generally treated as uppity chattel, Hannah's character sets out for the far country to see who else is there. Eventually, she finds more Baywatch-like gods and goddesses similar to herself, including an Aryan-looking stud with whom she discovers how good sex can feel with a warm, caring, proto-human. Sayles's writing on this project is forceful but cheeky. It's hard not to laugh at a number of scenes that shouldn't, in the strictest sense, be laughed at (the use of subtitles to decipher caveman grunts and clucks may or may not be an intentional running joke), but one gets the feeling Sayles looked upon this challenge as a pop exercise instead of (as many of the book's fans would have preferred) a religious experience. Michael Chapman, ace cinematographer of Mean Streets and The Wanderers, directed with an eye toward primitive exotica and made this a terrific-looking movie. Author Auel was reportedly unhappy with the final results on screen, but the film is well worth a fascinated look. With Pamela Reed and James Remar. --Tom Keogh

1 out of 5 stars Worst film ever!!!.......2007-07-16

This was the worst movie based on a book I have ever seen! I love the Earth's children series and was very excited when i found out Clan of the cave bear had been made into a movie. I was very disapointed! The film makers involved took a great story and ripped it's soul out. They butchered very important story lines, and the Characters were badly directed. What was left was a poor excuse for a story. After wasting 90 minutes of my life on this film all i could do was BEG for it back!!!

2 out of 5 stars Not worth what the book is worth........2007-06-09

When I first found out that one of my favorites books had a movie adaptation, I was thrilled. I went to Border's and bought the last copy, being a DVD. I was disappointed to find out that it was not worth what I paid for.

The movie is based from Jean M. Auel classic The Clan of the Cave Bear, the first in her Earth's Children series. The story is about a young Cro-magnon girl who is orphaned by and earthquake and how a Clan of Neanderthals take her in. The story also tells how she struggles to live with the Clan, with their customs and their physical differences.

The main role of Ayla is played by Darryl Hannah, who also starred in the Grumpy Old Men movies and Splash. Other actors include Pamela Reed at Ayla's adoptive mother Iza , and other actors as Iza's brother and Mo-gur Creb, the leader Brun, and the often disliked Broud.

Despite being a movie that was made in 1986, it did have decent special effects. The costumes and makeup that formed the Neanderthals that called themselves The Clan were very interesting in their authentic looking animal skinned clothing. What is also interesting to me is how the movie demonstrates how The Clan express their language. When a Clan member uses his or her 'sign language', subtitles appear at the bottom of the screen to translate what they're saying.

What makes this movie rated R is the fact that it does have inappropriate moments. The rape scene between Ayla and Broud could be a real turn off to some. Also at the Clan gathering there is a violent battle between a large Cave Bear and some young male Clan members. Because of this I wouldn't reccomend it to be viewed by young children.

There are a few scenes that are switched around or changed from the adaptation from the book. For example, the hyena that attacks Brac is a Wolf in the movie, and there is major changes during Ayla's first exile, Durc's birth and the Clan Gathering. This in a way is a slight annoyance, and disappointment.

The DVD doesn't have many special features. All it really contains is a chapter selection, and the DVD itself is double sided so you can choose between fullscreen and widescreen.

Overall the movie is not worth it's price. I payed $14.99 for the DVD and later found it at Fred Mayer and Shopko for $6.99. Unfortunately it doesn't have a very well rewatching value, either. Unless you're an obsessive fan of Jean M. Auel or Darryl Hannah's works, you may not enjoy this movie well. If I were you, stick to the book.

2 out of 5 stars Too Short.......2007-05-13

I was initally exited to find that they had made a movie for the Clan of the Cave Bear books, but i was expecting it to follow into the next few books in this story. I was a little disappointed when it just dropped off when she left the Clan, it would have been a better movie if they had incorperated all the books.

3 out of 5 stars Great Movie, Lame Disc.......2007-04-14

The Clan Of The Cave Bear, based on a novel by Jean M. Auel, is movie that became a product of its time. While following the plot of the book up to a point the film breaks away about halfway through. The movie became a story about social change and female vs. male values. Also, the movie had to drop most of the details and events that the book has, just to keep from becoming a six hour epic.
I saw the movie before reading the book, so while I have to say the book is better I do have a place in my heart for the movie. Watching it now, after l
