Product Description

Do you learn better by watching rather than reading? Here is a chance to see how to transport your baby from screaming into serenity...in minutes. Watch as, step-by-step, Dr. Karp teaches new parent how to switch on their baby's powerful calming reflex. English and Spanish In "The Happiest Baby" Dr. Karp reveals a treasure sought by new parents for centuries... the "calming reflex" (the automatic "off-switch? for any baby?s crying). No wonder thousands of Los Angeles parents, from working moms to superstars like Madonna and Michelle Pfeiffer have turned to Dr. Karp to learn his secrets for making babies happy. Elisabeth Bing author and co-founder of Lamaze International "The Happiest Baby on the Block is fun, fascinating and convincing. I highly recommend it to all new parents." (Running time - 38 minutes.) The DVD also contains 3 bonus chapters: 1) Dr. Karp answers 25 questions from parents about calming babies and helping them sleep. 2) A Spanish dubbed audio track of the entire 38 minute teaching video. 3) Three tracks of calming white-noise sound that is an extraordinary mix of womb sounds and a newly designed pulsation that babies love (even though it sounds a little odd to the ears of an adult) Each track can be played individually, played in sequence or repeated for hours to gently guide your baby into a deep level of relaxation. This video is designed in NTSC not PAL or SECAM. It is meant for use in most countries in the Western Hemisphere as well as Japan, South Korea, Greenland, Guam, Samoa, and the Philippines.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for new born.......2007-09-16

I am a mother of a triplets, needless to say, I need all the help I can get. This DVD was recommended by the babies' new PED. By then, my babies were already 2 months old but it still helped, I just wish that someone had told me about it earlier. The methods in the DVD defiantly work. My advise, get this BEFORE your baby is born and follow through with it from the first day, will save you time and make your life easier.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE!.......2007-09-07

This video will introduce you to a way to make your infant sleep! There is no magic involved, but simple techniques that work to calm your baby. Our baby has been sleeping all night through since 7 weeks, some nights she sleeps 13 hours!!

5 out of 5 stars Making the first few months a little easier.......2007-09-07

We buy this as a baby shower gift for friends every time. It worked wonders. At last we had a peaceful car ride (our son would scream in the car seat anytime we went somewhere). Oh beloved static!
These techniques work if only people give them a chance. Too many parents say their kid hates to be swaddled. Well, they were more squished than that for nine months. These techniques make sense too.
I hear the book is great too but I think the DVD must be better, especially for those who don't have time to read the book. Watching Dr. Karp use these techniques with real babies is amazing. And the sounds included on the DVD are handy too.

5 out of 5 stars Good way to calm your baby from 0-3 months.......2007-09-06

I found Dr. Karp's techniques beneficial in calming our baby. It is also a great way for Dad to interact with the baby. This is a quick video to watch as well, in case you don't have time to read the book.

5 out of 5 stars THE HAPPIEST PARENTS ON THE BLOCK.......2007-09-04

Our son was not exactly colicky or high need during his "4th trimester" of his life however, a trusted friend recommended the dvd so highly we thought we'd watch it anyway and practice the 5 S's method to see what would happen. Well, our son went from being slightly fussy before bedtime with just a couple of wake ups throughout the night to drifting off to sleep without any drama and sleeping the whole night through from the age of 4 weeks until now at age of 10 months! We simply couldn't believe the transformation. Our family as well as other parents were shocked that our son was such a great sleeper during the night which made him very happy and rested during the day. My husband and I believe that Dr Karp's method was the key reason behind our baby's amazing new nighttime routine. We highly recommend the dvd or the book to any frustrated and sleep-deprived parents or even those parents who think that their baby doesn't need the 5 S's method. Dr Karp's method is simply a whole new level of peaceful nighttime routine for babies.

A delightful undersea world unfolds in Pixar's animated adventure Finding Nemo. When his son Nemo is captured by a scuba-diver, a nervous-nellie clownfish named Marlin (voiced by Albert Brooks) sets off into the vast--and astonishingly detailed--ocean to find him. Along the way he hooks up with a scatterbrained blue tang fish named Dory (Ellen DeGeneres), who's both helpful and a hindrance, sometimes at the same time. Faced with sharks, deep-sea anglers, fields of poisonous jellyfish, sea turtles, pelicans, and much more, Marlin rises above his neuroses in this wonderfully funny and nonstop thrill ride--rarely does more than 10 minutes pass without a sequence destined to become a theme park attraction. Pixar continues its run of impeccable artistic and economic success (their movies include Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, and Monsters, Inc). Also featuring the voices of Willem Dafoe, Geoffrey Rush, and Allison Janney. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars wonderful story for kids and adults..........2007-09-06

This is one of my favorite animated pictures I've ever seen and I've seen it over a hundred times. There was a time when all my kids ever wanted to watch was NEMO! The animation is riveting, the characters are unforgettable, the story is beautiful and the humor is marvelous for kids and adults and never crosses the line. What I loved about this was it fell into line with what you would expect from fish and all the other creatures that you come across and never crossed a line into absurd or in tongue, sarcastic humor like some other fish movies I've seen. A fathers love is so strong for his son drives this film and in what has to be the funniest supporting fish, um..actress in an animated film I've ever seen. Ellen DeGeneres as Dory is amazing.

5 out of 5 stars great for kids and grown up.......2007-07-29

I love all the Disney classics, and for years I didn't want to see this movie thinking it wasn't the "real deal". Well.... I was wrong! It might be different, but is a great movie..... The story, the colors, the pictures... everything is Disney quality. My little girl, now almost 3 years old, has been watching it for 6 months now, sometimes up to 3 times a day, and never gets tired. And I have to say that I watch it with her most of the times....

2 out of 5 stars Why does any story have to start with the death of the parent?.......2007-07-24

My kids really didn't need that. If you feel that way too... try some of the Pippi movies.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Pixar.......2007-07-09

Pixar has created amazing movies, and this has to be their best. Stunning scenes, capturing the beauty of the world of coral reefs, along with the mystery of the oceans. Great story and humor.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BE CORRUPTED BY THIS MOVIE!!!.......2007-06-05

The movie was a little boring and looked really fake. You could tell it wasn't real and was just a bunch of silly puppets. I hope the kids that watch it don't really think fish can talk. Most of the movie is scientifically inaccurate. At one point there are a lot of "baby" fish. These fish appear, no, not as fry or something else that makes sense, but as slightly smaller versions of the adult. After this, these "baby" fish climb onto the back of a stingray (a predatory animal that should be eating them" who is their "teacher" he swims around and sings songs while the "baby" fish ride on his back. Other associations appear in this movie that I doubt have ever been observed in the wild. At one point, a clown fish is talking to a seahorse and an octopus, two of which only associate with their own kind, and one of which will kill anything to get within several feet of it! Does this happen in the movie? NO!

However, what I find most disturbing is not the numerous scientific inaccuracies, but the fact that most people that view this movie regard it as a documentary on ocean life. I have seen kids at the aquarium pointing at fish and referring to them as a "Nemo" or a "Dori".

Anyway, the stingray teacher manages to lose the baby clown fish (big surprise, what do you expect with a stingray for a teacher, you're lucky he didn't eat the kid!). And the clown fish gets captured and put into an aquarium in a dentists office with, yes more talking fish, but just wait! In this tank, there are also talking shrimp, and even a talking Starfish.

OK, now talking fish is one thing. They may not have lungs or vocal chords to produce speech, and not even close to sufficient cognitive function, but at least they're vertebrates! But having an animal without even a brain talking!? That's just ridiculous! And speaking the same language as the fish!

Now, yes, there have been strange things in Disney movies before. In Alice in wonderland there are talking flowers, and even a talking slug that smokes opium. However, Alice in Wonderland is the delusion of a madman, and does not take place in the natural world. Hence the name "Wonderland". However, does Finding Nemo take place in "Wonderland"? NO! It takes place in the Great Barrier reed, just outside Australia! Did the maker think "Well, nobody that watches this movie has been to Australia, so they won't know that the fish don't talk there"? I don't know what he was thinking, but I wasn't fooled! I personally have been to Australia, and the fish do NOT talk there! this movie makes no sense and is in no way entertaining.

After that, the fish attempt to make their tank dirty by clogging the filter, in which they succeed. However, the maker of this film has obviously never kept saltwater fish before. If he had, he would realise that after living without a filter for more than an hour, every fish in the tank would be dead. Does this happen? NO! The tank just gets really dirty and the fish remain just as alive as ever! I couldn't take it any more. I walked out of the theater after that.

Do not regard this movie as factual! Do not take your children to see this movie! This is one of the WORST places to get information about fish. Do not be fooled by this movie or the numerous other positive reviews!

Amazon.com essential video

When it was released during Hollywood's golden year of 1939, The Wizard of Oz didn't start out as the perennial classic it has since become. The film did respectable business, but it wasn't until its debut on television that this family favorite saw its popularity soar. And while Oz's TV broadcasts are now controlled by media mogul Ted Turner (who owns the rights), the advent of home video has made this lively musical a mainstay in the staple diet of great American films. Young Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland), her dog, Toto, and her three companions on the yellow brick road to Oz--the Tin Man (Jack Haley), the Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr), and the Scarecrow (Ray Bolger)--have become pop-culture icons and central figures in the legacy of fantasy for children. As the Wicked Witch who covets Dorothy's enchanted ruby slippers, Margaret Hamilton has had the singular honor of scaring the wits out of children for more than six decades. The film's still as fresh, frightening, and funny as it was when first released. It may take some liberal detours from the original story by L. Frank Baum, but it's loyal to the Baum legacy while charting its own course as a spectacular film. Shot in glorious Technicolor, befitting its dynamic production design (Munchkinland alone is a psychedelic explosion of color and decor), The Wizard of Oz may not appeal to every taste as the years go by, but it's required viewing for kids of all ages. --Jeff Shannon

DVD features
The Wizard of Oz DVD released in 1999 was loaded with extra features, but it's now safe to throw away that version in all its cardboard-package glory in favor of this new two-disc edition. First things first: All the bonus material from the earlier disc is there (with one small exception). That includes the Angela Lansbury-hosted documentary The Making of a Movie Classic; the outtakes and deleted scenes, including Judy Garland's "Over the Rainbow" reprise and the home-movie recording of "The Jitterbug"; the sketches and stills and composer Harold Arlen's home movies; the audio underscores and radio programs; the 1979 interviews with Margaret Hamilton, Ray Bolger, and Jack Haley; and other items too numerous to mention. (Some text introductions to the features have been replaced by narration by Lansbury, for whatever reason.) Brand-new to the 2005 edition is a sharp restoration using Warner's Ultra Resolution process and an accompanying featurette on how it's done. The technicians also discuss how the sound was remixed, though that would have been more effective had it included surround-sound demonstrations (the featurette is in 2.0). Other features on the new set include a commentary track by critic John Fricke supplemented by vintage cast interviews (he offers a lot of trivia, and debunks the myth that Shirley Temple was ever close to getting the Dorothy role); profiles of nine cast members and clips of other movies they appeared in (including Toto); a lightly animated 10-minute storybook again narrated by Lansbury; 2001 and 2005 behind-the-scenes featurettes; and a 1950 Lux Radio Theater broadcast. Oh, and if you were still wondering about the missing material mentioned above--the 1999 disc included one-minute excerpts of three early treatments of The Wizard of Oz. Those excerpts are not included in the two-disc special edition, but the third disc of the three-disc collector's edition includes the complete versions of those treatments and more. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Great film without the extra crap you don't want.......2007-09-08

There seems to be six or seven different DVD versions of this film (a new one out every year) with more and more bonus features, extras, etc. However, if you're only interested in seeing the actual film and are generally bored and/or underwhelmed by bonus features (like me!), I recommend this version for nearly half the cost of newer multiple-disc sets. This remastered version has excellent picture!

5 out of 5 stars Dorothy and Toto.......2007-09-04

Well, everybody probably already knows about this product. I am trying to get my grandchildren (5 & 3 1/2 yrs old) interested in live action movies with real people in them. They watch cartoon characters & "Shrek" type movies all the time. I have a Madam Alexander doll of Dorothy and Toto. I tried to explain to them who she was and they got interested in the story.
So, I ordered this and sent it to them in Detroit. They loved it. They sat through the whole movie. And my daughter said the extras are great!

5 out of 5 stars OVER THE RAINBOW.......2007-08-28

I hesitated to spend the money on this 3 disc set. How wrong I was! This is THE set for "Wizard of Oz" fans. The movie looks gorgeous and the special features have something for everyone. I found myself grinning so much at some of the features that my face hurt afterwards. It's great to hear and see the homage given to this film. This is one DVD set that invites repeat viewing of all the discs and you will gladly accept the invitation again and again.

My Neighbor Totoro is that rare delight, a family film that appeals to children and adults alike. While their mother is in the hospital, 10-year-old Satsuki and 4-year-old Mei move into an old-fashioned house in the country with their professor father. At the foot of an enormous camphor tree, Mei discovers the nest of King Totoro, a giant forest spirit who resembles an enormous bunny rabbit. Mei and Satsuki learn that Totoro makes the trees grow, and when he flies over the countryside or roars in his thunderous voice, the winds blow. Totoro becomes the protector of the two sisters, watching over them when they wait for their father, and carrying them over the forests on an enchanted journey. When the children worry about their mother, Totoro sends them to visit her via a Catbus, a magical, multilegged creature with a grin the Cheshire Cat might envy.

Unlike many cartoon children, Satsuki and Mei are neither smart-alecky nor cloyingly saccharine. They are credible kids: bright, energetic, silly, helpful, and occasionally impatient. Filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki makes the viewer believe the two sisters love each other in a way no American feature has ever achieved. My Neighbor Totoro is enormously popular in Japan, and some of the character merchandise has begun to appear in America. The film has also inspired a Japanese environmental group to buy a Totoro Forest preserve in the Saitama Prefecture, where Miyazaki's film is set. --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars This version is better than Disney's........2007-09-14

I like this version a lot better than the one that Disney recently released. I own them both and this is the one that I watch. The Disney one has its benefits; you can view the film in the original Japanese language and you can watch it in Widescreen. However, the voice over done on the new Disney one is terrible; it sounds really "acty". I am not fond of Disney's decision to try to sell Miyazaki's movies based on WHO does the voice over as opposed to HOW WELL they do the voice over.
This movie was my introduction to Miyazaki many years ago and is one of my most favorite animated films. Every child I have ever know that sees this movie loves it.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for the youngsters.......2007-09-08

The Japanese origin of this film gives it a refreshing look compared to American animation. The story is delightful, and for a change a girl has the lead role. Kids will love the landscapes and the characters. Good, clean fun.

5 out of 5 stars Would Give it More Stars if More Than Five Were Possible.......2007-09-06

Have probably watched this movie at least fifty times with and without my daughter either all the way through or just for 10 or so minutes here and there. It's safe to say that nobody in my home has shown the slightest capacity to lose any interest in this totally brilliant-but-understatedly-so movie. If I could only recommend one thing of all the things I've ever purchased on Amazon it might just be this movie. Can't recommend it highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars This is the one you want.......2007-07-30

This is the definitive English-dubbed version. You've got to have it.

Steer clear of the Disney product. They butchered Totoro.

I concur that a full-blown multi-disc DVD would be nice, but then you might be settling for Disney dubbing. And all the good Fox version DVD's will be bought up and no longer available. Or they will be $200 collector's items.

I truly hate what Disney does to Japanese film. All the film's messages are reduced to a slow 1st grade reading level. Americanisms are substituted for Japanisms. Famous AMerican actors are used for the voices. Very distracting.

Get a clue, Disney. I'm trying to watch a Japanese film so I can see a Japanese film. I don't need it dumbed down and Americanized.

Note that the above criticism is directed agaist the Disney product.

This Fox product is great. Whatever anime you can get your hands on that Disney hasn't touched, congratulations.

I hate what Disney does to anime ever more than I hate Ted Turner for colorizing everything, but it's the same kind of hate.

5 out of 5 stars terrific, original story.......2007-07-26

very nice to have little girls as the primary characters. Well written dynamic between the sisters, showing how a big sister tends to look out for her younger siblings, and how very young children feel about being told what to do. The magical world and characters that the girls discover at their summer home is a great connection to the imaginary play that I see in the younger children. Its a little long for the little ones(3- 4.5 yrs) but my 5 year old enjoys the whole movie on an indoor day or long trip. We watched Sprirted Away first, another great movie, but its not really for little ones (some "scary" characters and a separation from parents).
In this movie, the girls' are concerned about their mother who is recuperating, but that is not the focus of the story, and I think its good to present the idea that little kids could sometimes have an ill or recuperating parent. (Instead of just dead, like so many of the princess movies)

Andrei Konchalovsky's expansive television mini-series production of Homer's epic poem gets off to clumsy start as he tries to squeeze the Trojan War into a mere half hour, but once the arrogant but honorable Odysseus (strikingly played by Armand Assante) and his loyal crew begin their doomed voyage home, this film turns into a fantastical adventure. Integrating often-stunning special effects with inventive art design, Konchalovsky achieves a beautiful look on a limited budget as he follows the 10-year ordeal of Odysseus from his battles with the Cyclops and the magical Circe (Bernadette Peters) to his secret homecoming and his confrontation with the treacherous Eurymachus (Eric Roberts). Isabella Rossellini appears as his spiritual guide, the goddess Athena, with Greta Scacchi as Odysseus's faithful wife and Vanessa Williams as the seductive Calypso. The rest of the cast includes Geraldine Chaplin, Jeroen Krabbé, Christopher Lee, and Irene Papas. The production was shot on location in and around the Mediterranean, making for a lush, lovely visual experience. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Movie.......2007-09-10

I purchased the movie for my 10th grade World History classes. We were studying Ancient Greece and I wanted to show them The Odyssey. My students really enjoyed watching it. One of my students was eager to see the way the movie ended.

3 out of 5 stars Average delivery.......2007-07-07

The Odyssey is probably one of the most well-known stories of Western literature. It contains elements of suspense, action, adventure, fantasy, romance, and even some comedy. It is also quite long, and features a big cast of characters; human and non-human. With all of this, it would seem to be a perfect candidate for a top-notch movie. Surprisingly, Hollywood has made very few movies about this topic, with probably the best one being this production by Hallmark.

The storyline follows the original epic quite well in terms of action. The casting is better than average, as Armande Assante does look like he is of Mediterranean descent, and gratefully, does not speak with an English accent as Sean Bean's Odysseus in the movie "Troy". The special effects are as Hallmark movies go; believable but not extravagant. The dialogue is somewhat flat. For such a famous epic with so many hundreds of English translations, the director should have tried to make this tale like Kenneth Branagh with his Shakespeare movies; have the characters speak the dialogue from the original text. Other than that, no noticeable flaws. Nothing spectacular but still worth the 3+ hours to watch this movie.

1 out of 5 stars More like a NEGATIVE 3.......2007-06-13

This comes close to being the worse piece of garbage it has ever been my privilege to view. The acting...HORRENDOUS!!! CGI...poorly done. Do yourself a favor and watch the Roman version of the Odyssey...Ulysses with Kirk Douglas. It may be an oldie, but it's definitely an absolute goodie!!

4 out of 5 stars Mythological Fiction.......2007-05-26

This film is one of the better of this genre--due to the casting, and the more "true to life and literature" approach that is taken. The characters seem much more "human." Enough sexual content, albeit well done, to preclude viewing by even teenagers. Homer's story is followed pretty faithfully, too, from my distant memories. But the real "excellence" is in the acting.

The Movie in itself is a great movie however, there were a few times that the movie stopped and digital quality became distorted. I did not send it back because I did not want to go through with hassling of shipping it back. Let's just let bygones be bygones.:)

Words cannot capture the delights of The Triplets of Belleville, an astonishing animated movie from the mind of French director Sylvain Chomet. In fact, there are only a few spoken sentences in the entire film; most of the soundtrack is a mix of squeaks, barks, and the jazzy music of Benoit Charest. A bicyclist is kidnapped from the Tour de France by mysterious gangsters; his grandmother travels to the city of Belleville (which has a sardonic version of the Statue of Liberty in its harbor), where she tracks him down with the help of a musical trio gone to seed, the Belleville Triplets. This hand-drawn movie is unlike anything you'll see from Disney; every scene mixes the silent comedy of Jacques Tati and Buster Keaton--in which the world of objects subtly fights with living beings for mastery--and the bouncy hop of Betty Boop. Unique and mesmerizing. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Insane yet piquant -- fun for all unless you are a frog!.......2007-09-09

This zany classic shows how the loyalty and determination of a widow, her son, and their dog, triumph over the evil forces of international gambling cartels and kidnappers with the help of the titular triplets. Well worth a watch if you like color, music, mayhem, and catch-as-catch-can cuisine.

5 out of 5 stars Completely Original........2007-09-08

I can guarantee you will not have seen anything like this animated film. It's provocative, funny, intelligent, quirky, and artistically done. The funky musical soundtrack is memorable and will reverberate in your brain for quite a while. Be sure to watch the entire film through the credits because there is a fun little twist to the finale.

4 out of 5 stars A great surprise.......2007-09-01

Yes, you won't find any dialogue on the movie, is not that the DVD doesn't come with subtitles... There is nothing to subtitle... There are a few words in French not really relevant in the movie, you get the idea... And you have to be patient and enjoy the movie, 'cause it's different than what you think about "French cinema"... A great animation, a wonderful story and great music, mixed with comedy and, of course, a little touch of our twisted reality... Take a chance in joining Madame Souza and the Triplets of Belleville, I hope you won't regret it

5 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2007-08-29

We saw it in the theater several years ago and decided to purchase it so we could watch it again. The story is about a French cyclist who grandmother is his coach and crew in a race. If you know a little about the French obsession with cycling the story is very funny. Especily the car chase and the animation of the cars in the chase.

5 out of 5 stars Non-stop entertainment.......2007-08-25

It takes a little time to get into the story, but the creative efforts are overwhelming! What a wonderful, quirky story of love and devotion. The dog is outrageous! This is an adult animation that makes you look at the world as a child again. It is terrific!

Way before she grabbed an Oscar nomination for her searing performance as a world-weary prostitute in Leaving Las Vegas, Elisabeth Shue was known as one of the squeaky-clean actresses of the '80s. Having made a splash in The Karate Kid and the '60s-nostalgia TV series Call to Glory, Shue cemented her good-girl reputation with the charming but badly titled Adventures in Babysitting. Set in the John Hughes-style suburbs of Chicago, the titular adventures follow babysitter Chris (Shue), who agrees to watch the Anderson kids (Keith Coogan and Maia Brewton) when her boyfriend cancels their anniversary date. All is quiet on the home front until Chris is called upon to rescue her best friend (Penelope Ann Miller, also doing good-girl duty) from the seedy downtown bus station. She can't leave the kids, and she can't leave her friend alone in the big bad city, so she packs everyone in the station wagon and heads into Chicago. Screwball craziness begins as they encounter car thieves, knife-wielding gangs, gun-toting truck drivers, and, worst of all, Chris's duplicitous boyfriend. It's hardly mature entertainment, but Shue makes it work; when she wins over the audience at a blues club with her improv singing, you'll be won over, too. In his directorial debut, Chris Columbus (who later went on to helm the sap-fests Mrs. Doubtfire and Home Alone) gently skewers the suburbia white-bread mindset of the main characters, and plays up the comedy over the schmaltz with a subtlety of which he now seems incapable; the near romance between Shue and Coogan is played lightly and adorably. Look for brief appearances by art-house faves Lolita Davidovich as a college party girl and Vincent D'Onofrio as an unlikely savior. --Mark Englehart

Description

Chris Parker (Elisabeth Shue) agrees to babysit after her "dream" date stands her up. Expecting a dull evening, Chris settles down with three kids for a night of TV ... and boredom. But when her frantic friend Brenda calls and pleads to be rescued from the bus station in downtown Chicago, the evening soon explodes into an endless whirl of hair-raising adventures! Babysitter and kids leave their safe suburban surroundings and head for the heart of the big city, never imagining how terrifyingly funny their expedition will become.

4 out of 5 stars Remember This One?.......2007-09-14

This movie is a lot of fun, and having recently seen it on DVD, I liked it as much as I did as a kid in the '80's. While I guess there was a bit of rough language a time or two that the movie could have done just as well without and which I can't for the life of me recall hearing when I used to watch this, Adventures in Babysitting holds up well today and should be a hit with new fans in this decade. Interesting how times have changed though since this film was shot. Nowadays cell phones would shake up the entire course of the plot, but it's contrasts like those that make this an enjoyable look back for those of us who were actually around back when this was a new show. Elizabeth Shue turns in a versatile performance as the babysitter in the title, and director Chris Columbus, who went on in later years to give us the classic Home Alone, and more recently a pair of Harry Potter movies, displays a few tricks that keep things from ever getting close to boring. Adventures in Babysitting is one to sit back and enjoy all over again.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-09-07

This is a great, fun movie. One scene does contain some pretty bad language for kids but other than that, it is a great movie. My family loved it.

4 out of 5 stars I wish they made the CD !.......2007-08-17

The music was great in this movie and I have talked to so many people that have said the same thing.....Why didn't they make a CD of the soundtrack?

5 out of 5 stars What's with the "racism" review! Puuuhhhleazzze!.......2007-08-14

I couldn't believe the review I read written by "Adventures In Racism" back in November of '06.

If I may quote one of his or her ridiculous ramblings...

"A white girl (Elizabeth Shue, lightyears from her work in Leaving Las Vegas) is baby-sitting several white kids, when she gets a desperate phone call from her white girl friend. Why is her white girl friend desperate? Because she is stuck in a downtown bus station, surrounded by (gasp) African Americans!"

Ok!

1. There was a WHITE guy at the train station with a gun
2. There was a WHITE homeless guy who she was scared of who's house was the telephone booth.
3. There was a BLACK lady who took her glasses who was homeless..BUT..
4. There was a WHITE Rat that she thought was a cat.

5. Yes there was a BLACK car Thief, but he was very helpful and an outcast to his thief-mates
6. There was a BLACK blues band, but this is inner city, this is Chicago where I am from, the blues is big...and the band in the movie kicked butt and the WHITE kids were written sorta dorky and out of sync.
7. Let's get to the crazy WHITE truck driver with the hook in his hand and the gun in the glove department! WHITE, WHITE, WHITE,what am I now, color blind??
8. The car thief garage was made up of WHITE and BLACK and the head criminal/boss was...(drum roll) WHITE!
9.The "street gang" on the train fighting each other...hmm let's see..I see WHITE,HISPANIC,AFRICAN AMERICAN..pretty diverse gang for being a "racist" film don't ya think.
10. Until the little gal warmed his heart by giving him her "Thor" hat..the car repair guy, that was going to rip them off and KEEP their car (and who they were scared of) was WHITE!

I'm sick of crap like this. "Adventures in Racism" my review of YOU is one star and you act lie a dope.

Not liking a movie is ONE thing. But to call it racist is just absurd.

So there have been other films by this director with primarily white people and less black actors, but let's not forget..

I don't see TONS of White people in a movie that is primarily African American.

Friday,I'm Gonna Get You Sucks,Friday II which by the way,has used it's own stereo-typing to the fullest..NONE of which I've seen in Adventures In Babysitting.

The 80's was a fun time for films be it a WHITE movie or a BLACK movie.

It's just good...

5 STARS!! (if it makes you feel better "Adventures In Racism" I'll paint my stars BLACK.

Sorry to all my African American friends..I know you were with me and find it RIDICULOUS.

Please Please Please! REALLY watch the movie before jumping to these ridiculous accusations! Thank You!

Before they unleashed the idiotic mayhem of Independence Day and Godzilla, the idea-stealing team of director Roland Emmerich and producer-screenwriter Dean Devlin concocted this hokey hit about the discovery of an ancient portal capable of zipping travelers to "the other side of the known universe." James Spader plays the Egyptologist who successfully translates the Stargate's hieroglyphic code, and then joins a hawkish military unit (led by Kurt Russell) on a reconnaissance mission to see what's on the other side. They arrive on a desert world with cultural (and apparently supernatural) ties to Earth's ancient Egypt, where the sun god Ra (played by Jaye Davidson from The Crying Game) rules a population of slaves with armored minions and startlingly advanced technology. After being warmly welcomed into the slave camp, the earthlings encourage and support a rebellion, and while Russell threatens to blow up the Stargate to prevent its use by enemy forces, the movie collapses into a senseless series of action scenes and grandiose explosions. It's all pretty ridiculous, but Stargate found a large and appreciative audience, spawned a cable-TV series, and continues to attract science fiction fans who are more than willing to forgive its considerable faults. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars Pre-Independence day.......2007-09-03

If you are a fan a Roland Emmerich movies then this is for you! If you like fast paced and interstelar with huge scale space battles then you may want to skip to another movie. I can tell you this: this was the Pre-Independence movie preview! Excelent production as you can expect! On a desert in Egypt some scientits find a huge ring and they try to find out what it is. A social loser but a genius in translating is cast to translate the symbols in the ring, which turns to be a stargate to a far planet where an alien has turn a human colony into slaves. Weak performance of Kurt Russel if you ask me. The movies runs slow alowing you to enjoy the dialogs and the landscapes. I think Emmerich was still trying to find his pace and the exact kind of movie he wanted to make. In the end this group of US soldiers defeat the alien liberating the human colony and our loser turned to saviour decides to remain in that planet. I can tell you this, if you are into alien ships, desert planets, soldiers dying in battle, innocent children turned to slaves and not yet so well developed drama then this one is for you. If you are a Roland E. fan just get it so you can see the evolution until the monumental Day after tomorrow came up!

5 out of 5 stars My Video Tape Finally Wore Out.......2007-08-14

The ultimate fantasy movie. Yes, it is science fiction, but does a wonderful job of giving you a sense of wonder as you follow Jackson on his pedantic adventure. The movie stands on its own and is also the introduction to the Stargate cable/television series.

As a father of five sons, I have enjoyed sharing this one with each boy when he reaches 7 or 8 (on a smallish screen but with big sound).

I would warn all families away from the pilot episode for the first year's series (Stargate SG-1), due to gratuitous nudity and overly graphic display of the Goa'uld larvae habits... Have the kiddos skip the pilot. The series however is hilarious, and reasonably wholesome considering it started on cable. It is somewhat skit style, with actors stepping out of character and poking fun at almost every sci-fi movie ever made (including itself).

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-08-08

I loved the original, and this one is just as good, if not better. I thought the new opening scenes helped to tie the storyline in later. The other added scenes are subtle, and unless you've seen the original many times, you probably would have a difficult time noticing which scenes were added, but in my opinion, that's how good this movie is. The added scenes help to give the viewer a fuller idea of the entire story. About the extras on the disk, I wish there would have been more, like maybe some "making of" footage or interviews with the actors, producers, director, etc. But I'm not complaining (very few films of that time have many extras when converted to DVD). The one special extra they do have on the disk more than makes up for the lack of interviews, in my mind. I don't want to spoil the surprise, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It'll make you think or re-think many ideas. Overall, I'd highly recommend this version to anyone who liked the original Stargate movie.

Flushed Away is a rip-roaring nautical adventure with a twist: The heroes are a pair of rodents braving the sewers underneath London. Roddy (voiced by Hugh Jackman) is an upper-crust house-mouse who finds himself flushed into the subterranean sewers. Eager to return to his posh home, he enlists the help of a boat-captain rat named Rita (Kate Winslet), who has troubles of her own; namely the kingpin of the underworld, the Toad (Ian McKellen), and his henchmen including the French mercenary Le Frog (Jean Reno).

While technically Flushed Away could be considered part of the wave of celebrity-voiced, anthropomorphic-animal movies that hit in 2005-2006 (Madagascar, Over the Hedge, The Wild, etc.), it doesn't inspire the same sense of déjà vu. For one thing, its voice actors are less recognizable than the likes of Bruce Willis and Chris Rock. For another, its look is very distinctive. Like Nick Park's Chicken Run and Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, it's a joint production of DreamWorks Animation and Aardman Features, and although Park isn't involved, it retains his trademark blocky look of clay animation. But animating the movie by computer rather than by hand allows for some eye-popping tableaux, such as floodwaters rushing through the sewers and an entire town of little animated characters. It's a crazy thrill ride loaded with inside jokes and enough crude humor to earn a PG rating, and the band of singing slugs is also a hoot. --David Horiuchi

On the DVD
It's no surprise that the singing slugs are the stars of the DVD's bonus features. They're featured in two music videos (less than a minute total), and in a 13-minute segment an Aardman animator builds a slug out of plasticine. (In contrast, the lesson on drawing Roddy is a mere two minutes.) A song jukebox jumps to 10 musical points in the film, though the non-slug background music isn't really worth the jump. On the human side, there are eight-minute featurettes on the music and the voices, a set-top game that is easier to control than most such featurettes (and easier to beat too), and a commentary track by directors David Bowers and Sam Fell in which they have a grand old time remembering their inside jokes and showering love on the Spike and Whitey characters. The DVD-ROM has access to 21 more online games. --David Horiuchi

Product Description

Set on and beneath the streets of London, Flushed Away is the story of Roddy, an upper-crust "society mouse," who is rather rudely evicted from his Kensington flat when he is flushed down into Ratropolis, the bustling sewer world found under London's streets. There, he meets Rita, an enterprising scavenger who works the sewers in her faithful boat, the Jammy Dodger. Together they must navigate their way through a busy city filled with dangers for any mouse, including terrifying rapids, treacherous whirlpools and, most of all, the villainous Toad and his hench-rats Spike and Whitey. Though completely out of his element at first, the privileged Roddy finds himself an unlikely hero when he learns that Ratropolis is in danger from the world above.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of Fun for all ages!.......2007-09-13

My boys are 3 and 5. I watched this first to preview it, and although some of the humor was a little above their heads (and they use the word "idiot" a few more times than I'm comfortable with), I chose to let them watch it. They loved it! So much so that we had to buy a copy. I've seen it now more than 1/2 dozen times and it's still funny for me - as well as for them. (Fortunately "idiot" hasn't shown up in our house, but I've been pro-active in discussing appropriate vs. inappropriate language.) It's fun, fast-paced and even kept my 3 year old entertained ... which doesn't happen with most movies. The message about home, friends and family is a good one. Noone gets hurt - not even the hench-rats - there's a happy ending and unlike most Disney movies, no parents were killed to propel the plot forward which was refreshing. I enjoyed this so much I bought the CD soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT MOVIE FOR A 2 YEARS OLD.......2007-09-06

MY TWO YEAR OLD WOULDN'T WATCH ANYTHING ELSE FOR 2 WEEKS AFTER GETTING THIS MOVIE. MY HUSBAND, FROM ENGLAND, ALSO LOVED IT FOR ALL THE BRITISH REFERENCES AND HUMOR.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful movie for adults and kids.......2007-07-31

My grand kids loved the movies as did I. Great animation and humor. Right up there with Chicken Run, Wallace and Grommit et al.

5 out of 5 stars Rats Rule!.......2007-07-28

Having been a rat pet owner for many years now, its nice to see a movie portraying these lovable little rodents as the social creatures they truely are.

5 out of 5 stars A solid animated film.......2007-07-27

I genuinely like the movies produced by Aardman and Dreamworks. It's too bad that this is the last film that they will produce together. I thought the film had a solid story line and used plenty of witty and original comedy. This is one of the few shows that I can let my kids watch more than once without my going crazy. Try doing that with a disney film.

Directed by Sidney Lumet (Serpico) and penned by Joel Schumacher (Batman and Robin), this lavish 1978 adaptation of the Broadway hit The Wiz was the biggest production filmed in New York City up to that point, utilizing the newly revamped Astoria Studios and locations around the city. Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, and Ted Ross (reprising his Tony-winning role as the Lion) star in this Academy Award-nominated musical for the whole family.

The Wiz is probably the grandest take on L. Frank Baum's classic tale The Wizard of Oz. The production team created sets with a sense of urban magic and spectacle: a New York subway station literally comes to life, and the massive plaza
